This 3D Printed Robot Can Crawl Underneath Doors

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

A designer has developed a 3D printed robot that can auto-adjust its height to maneuver a wide range of spaces.

A Reddit member called potentprintables has just presented a 3D printed robot that adjusts its size in order to fit into tight spaces. That means the robot can also squeeze underneath doors.

It’s really rather remarkable to watch the Minority Report inspired creation crawl across the floor and adjust its size as it hits an obstacle.

The user says that the robot is actually based on the design by David Zarrouk, Andrew Pullin, Nick Kohut and Ronald Fearing at the Biomimetic Millisystems Lab, UC Berkeley.

    Inspired by Nature

The original six-legged, sprawl-tuned autonomous robot (STAR) is able to adapt its leg-to-surface contact angles. According to the accompanying research paper, the Zarrouk team drew their inspiration from insects. Specifically, they focused on the crawling motion of the robot.

Furthermore, the STAR device was developed with easy recreation in mind. It has been 3D printed using a Project 3000 machine.

Potentprintables’ version of the device expands on the original concept.

The user also shared full instructions and a bill of materials needed to allow other experienced 3D creators to have a go. Although easy to print, he warns that the mechanics necessary to finish the project aren’t for beginners.

    Take a look here.

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AD6Pw-_NrHc?feature=oembed&w=1140&h=641]

The Division 2 kommt am 15. März für Xbox One, PS4 und PC.

  • Makerslab24.com Combines Cryptocurrency and 3D Printing with 3dP-Token

Makerslab24.com Combines Cryptocurrency and 3D Printing with 3dP-Token

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Makerslab24.com is launching a platform that will fuse cryptocurrency with 3D printing technology. The company is creating the 3dP-Token to offer customers greater accessibility to 3D printed products at a lower cost.

Over the last five years or so, the world has become captivated by two emerging technologies: 3D printing and blockchain technology. The relentless hype surrounding Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies has slightly wavered as the monetary value has proven to be volatile, but blockchain technology has continued to infiltrate other industries nonetheless.

Makerslab24.com is looking to combine the two with 3dP-Token, a cryptocurrency that can be used to quickly order 3D printed products. The 3D printing service states that the aim of this token is to create a new market for mass consumption for 3D printing. Makerslab24.com is hoping that the development of their own cryptocurrency will help make 3D printing more accessible and affordable to the world.

“The additive manufacturing process is, like crypto currencies, one of the most emergent technologies of the 21st century. Both have in common to still be part of a niche market, but have the future-oriented potential to change the world and how we think about it,” the company’s website states.

Makerslab24.com Launches 3dP-Token to Combine Cryptocurrency and 3D Printing

In their white paper, Makerslab24.com details how the 3dP-Token will be used to help purchase professional-grade 3D printed products. It starts with the customer deciding which 3D printing process they want to use, along with a 3D design that can be uploaded by the user or designed by the company itself. Then, the customer will register and pay for the order with cryptocurrency, and the product will be manufactured on the 3D printing farm.

The company is planning to launch a 3D printing farm in the Czech Republic, which will produce products in exchange for cryptocurrency. They settled on this country because of the infrastructure and regulatory framework that has been developed for cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. Makerslab24.com is taking a broad approach towards their target market, looking to capture the attention of the medical and aerospace sector, as well as artists, dentists, and private customers too.

3dP-Token is a security token that is programmed on ERC-20 Ethereum basis. Makerslab24.com has launched an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) to help fund their platform. By investing in 3dP-Token, funders will also receive permanent profit sharing of the company. The 3D printing service claims that their token can be traded on exchanges for other cryptocurrencies or used to order 3D printed parts.

The 3D printing industry appears to be ripe for integration with blockchain technology, especially from a security and accessibility standpoint. For instance, Cubichain Technologies is leveraging the blockchain to encrypt data of 3D printable parts, preventing 3D printers and models from being compromised by hackers. On the flip side, some of those who have made their fortunes from Bitcoin have turned to 3D printing to create unbelievable projects.

Now, with Makerslab24.com, cryptocurrency could potentially be used to increase the affordability and accessibility of 3D printing. The company intends to publicly launch the 3dP-Token in September, and will build their 3D printer farm towards the end of 2018. If you want to learn more about the 3dP-Token and the ongoing ICO, check out the company’s website.

  • Video Game Addiction Now Officially Classified As Mental Health Condition

Video Game Addiction Now Officially Classified As Mental Health Condition

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Video game addicts can now be treated for free by the NHS as video game addiction has been officially classified as a mental health condition.

We all know someone who could afford to spend a little less time playing video games. Whether it’s friends not wanting to hang out because they’ve just downloaded a new game, or you yourself spending hours repeating the same level until you finally complete it, video games can often be hard to put down. For some players though, it’s more extreme than simply being reluctant to stop playing.

Some gamers find themselves particularly drawn to video games, wanting to do nothing but play, and even possibly giving up basic needs to ensure they don’t have to put down the controller.

As this problem becomes more widely recognised, the World Health Organisation has listed ‘gaming disorder’ in its International Classification of Diseases for the first time. This addition to the list means this type of behaviour is now being considered much more seriously.

While you might find yourself turning to video games quite often, this doesn’t necessarily mean you have the addiction.

The WHO explain that those who experience the disorder give priority to gaming over other interests and activities.

A pattern of gaming behavior (“digital-gaming” or “video-gaming”) characterized by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.

To be diagnosed with the disorder, you must ‘experience significant impairment in personal, family, social educational, occupational or other important areas of function’, and have experienced this type of impairment for at least one year to be diagnosed.

One mother shared her experience with gaming disorder as she had to send her daughter to rehab for her gaming addiction.

Speaking to The Mirror, the mother of the 9-year-old explained how her daughter had become so addicted to the video game Fortnite, she wet herself in order to keep playing.

The girl reportedly got up in the night to play the game until morning secretly, hit her father in the face when he tried to confiscate her Xbox console, and fell asleep in class after sacrificing sleep to play the game.

    The mother said

We had no idea, when we let her play the game, of the addictive nature or the impact it could have on her mental health.

She is in therapy for the addiction after she became withdrawn, agitated and disturbed from playing up to ten hours a day – sometimes playing until dawn, wetting herself so she didn’t have to leave the screen.

This is a serious issue which is destroying our little girl’s life and someone needs to step in to ban it before it becomes an epidemic.

The decision to add gaming disorder to the WHO‘s International Classification of Diseases comes amid increasing evidence that young gamers are suffering psychological distress and family breakdown because of their addictions, the Telegraph reports.

Dr Vladimir Poznyak from the WHO’s Mental Health and Substance Abuse department spoke to the Telegraph about the disorder. He said that although undiagnosed, studies suggest between 1% and 6% of adolescents and young people may suffer from gaming addiction.

The classification of gaming disorder means those that suffer from it will be entitled to treatment from the NHS.

For help, support and advice about problem gaming you can contact Video Game Addiction Help for 24/7, confidential support via their national helpline on 08000 886 686.

  • Control Your PC and Presentations with a Fidget Cube

Control Your PC and Presentations with a Fidget Cube

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Inspired by the original Fidget Cube, Masta Box is a Bluetooth 4.0 controller gadget which serves a range of purposes, such as a Micro SD card reader, an Air Mouse, a Joystick and a Laser Pointer.

Fidget toys have been helping people satisfy their need to fidget since last year. However, a company called Masta Box now wants to add more functionality to the toy and make it more practical, rather than just fidgeting fun.

They’ve designed the “world’s first ever” fidget controller gadget. Essentially, they re-engineered a fidget toy and turned a pretty useless (yet extremely fun) cube into a universal controller device which can complete a range of commands.

Better yet, it still looks like a fun toy but is, in fact, a somewhat crazy input device. If can be paired with Bluetooth 4.0 compatible devices. So you can use it as an air mouse, a game controller, a MIDI controlleror as a laser pointer. With the proper USB cable, the device also can be used as a Micro SD card reader. Use it for browsing the internet, giving a presentation, making music or playing videos.

The trackball resolution is 1,000 dpi, and the internal rechargeable battery can standby up to 4-week.

The fidget controller gadget is now on Kickstarter and has almost hit its goal of €20,941. Currently, the campaign has raised €19,123 thanks to 371 backers. However, there are still 24 days to go.

Masta Box explains on their campaign page: “At Masta Box, we are all certified Class-A fidgeters. Fidgeters get attached to their little fidget toys and bring them everywhere they go. That’s why we make Masta Box. It saves us from packing another device by combining a seemingly simple fidget cube with the functions of a universal Bluetooth controller.”

Pre-Order a Masta Box Fidget Controller on Kickstarter

In order to develop a sleek design which also serves a varied range of purposes, the team took to 3D modeling and printing to develop prototypes. However, there is little information available on their processes.

The final fidget controller is compatible with both PC and Mac via Bluetooth 4.0. You can pre-order yours from Kickstarter for $37 Canadian dollars (around $29USD). After the campaign ends, you’ll be able to choose your fidget controller’s color. Your controller should arrive by post in November this year.

Currently, the team states possible setbacks as: “We believe there will be bigger challenges ahead when we move to the mass production, but our team will make all our effort to assure the quality and production line run smoothly.”

Although the fidget controller is unlikely to be as commonly used as the fidget toy, it is a seemingly cool input device which could help with presentation nerves. Check out the Kickstarter campaign to find out more.

  • Gamer Who Fought ISIS Thanks Call Of Duty For Shooting Skills

Gamer Who Fought ISIS Thanks Call Of Duty For Shooting Skills

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

A 24-year-old who quit his job, sold his car and travelled to Syria to fight ISIS has said his time spent playing Call of Duty is to thank for his combat skills.

John Duttenhofer says playing first-person shooter games for up to 13 hours a day gave him an understanding of weapons and taught him the basic combat skills which he then used in real life.

The 24-year-old traveled to Syria in April to take up arms with the Kurds after ditching his job in customer service at a software company.

He spent six months fighting ISIS in Raqqa alongside the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG, during which time the city was liberated.

John decided to return to the US after suffering the loss of his close friend Jac Holmes, 24, a British IT worker who was killed in an explosion last October.

Speaking for the first time since he returned to Colorado on Monday, he told how he whiled away his days playing Dungeons and Dragons, reading and chatting.

By night, he went deep into the city with an AK-47 alongside a sniper unit of Kurdish soldiers as they occupied empty buildings and shot at ISIS fighters in a bid to advance.

John said that war reenactment games like Call of Duty taught him practical skills which he used to survive and meant he was already familiar with weapons.

    He said:

I decided to go to Syria after I saw reports about what ISIS were doing.

I thought it was pretty f*cked up.

My mom tried to persuade me to stay but she knew that fighting me would just make me go more rushed and unprepared.

When I told one of my best friends he was just like, ‘Hell yeah, go do it,’ and said it sounded amazing.

On one hand, I selfishly wanted to fight ISIS. On the other I wanted to be a part of something that was historical and groundbreaking.

I wasn’t scared of dying or anything like that.

Video games prepared me in a way for knowing strategies and how not to get killed, like how to use cover and not to stand in the open.

John revealed that he would spend up to 13 hours a day playing video games ‘like it was nothing’. Of course, he’s well aware that a video game is nothing like real life situations.

    He said:

I don’t think you can really draw a comparison between the mental state of mind of playing a game and going out and potentially losing your life.

In a game you will get shot and you quickly learn if you are killed, but in real life you just die.

John decided to go to Syria at the end of 2015 after reading about atrocities committed by fighters from the so-called Islamic State and the fight for Raqqa.

He sold his car, saved $7,000, got fit by cycling to work and bought binoculars, weapon slings, AK-47 magazines and chapstick on Amazon before setting off on April 23, 2017.

John is now back at home with his parents and trying to adapt back in to ‘normal’ life.

  • Skull & Bones – Gemeinsamer Jagdrevier-Modus vorgestellt

    Skull & Bones – Gemeinsamer Jagdrevier-Modus vorgestellt

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nBWjFn63Ic?feature=oembed&w=1140&h=641]

  • Father 3D Prints Orthoses for his Son, Now Helps Others

Father 3D Prints Orthoses for his Son, Now Helps Others

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

When Matej Vlašič was told that his son, Nik, who is afflicted with cerebral palsy, may never sit up, he began looking for a way to give him the best life possible regardless. With a little help from 3D printing and physical therapy, Nik cannot only sit up but also walk, cycle and dance. Vlašič has now set up aNImaKe, a company to help other parents in a similar situation.

Nik Vlašič was born prematurely with severe brain damage. His father, Matej Vlašič, was told his child may never be able to sit up. Three years later, Nik was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

However, Vlašič decided to do everything he could to provide as high a quality of life as possible for his son. He started by spending months researching how he could help Nik and found a possible answer could be lots of physical therapy and ankle foot orthoses (AFO).

The AFOs would support Nik’s weight, align his feet and condition his joints. By the time he was six, he was old enough to try them out. However, AFOs are both very expensive, take a long time to make (from fittings to fabrication) and are uncomfortable.

So, Vlašič, who is an engineer with 12 years of experience, turned to 3D printing to create a much cheaper, more comfortable solution. By using a Formlabs Form 2 SLA printer, Vlašič created 13 prototypes of comfortable AFOs.

“The lack of comfort and high price combined with all the other cons were enough that I decided to do something about it… I didn’t have the solution at that time, but I wanted to find a better way to design it. I was just trying to help my son the best possible way,” explains Vlašič.

Nik went from a Grave Prediction to Dancing with his Family

It took Vlašič half a year to perfect the AFO design and the workflow of using a Formlabs Form 2 SLA printer. However, after this time, he was able to provide Nik with orthoses which were comfortable. With this support, Nik was walking within a few days. After a few months, he was dancing.

The AFOs designed by Vlašič fit comfortably into Nik’s shoes and one pair costs less than $15. Traditionally made AFOs cost upwards of $5,000. By comparison, Vlašič’s 3D printer cost just $3,500 and Durable resin costs $175.

Vlašič did a great job in helping his son to walk, dance and even hike. So, he decided to try and help others by starting his own company, aNImaKe, to provide more families in a similar situation as himself with the technology to help their children.

Rather than having to go through the discomfort of fittings, plaster casts and quickly outgrowing expensive AFOs, it’s possible to 3D print comfortable designs. Nik, now seven-years-old, is already on his fourth pair of AFOs.

Vlašič has also been working with Gaurav Manchanda, the director of healthcare at Formlabs, whose three-year-old son was also born prematurely and diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

The two have since been working closely to tackle the issue of expensive orthotics. Manchanda explains: “Even if my son doesn’t improve from this process, we can still help millions of people around the world if this technology can scale. If we play a part in that, it’s super fulfilling.”

  • Weekend Project: 3D Print a Sleek 7-Segment LED Clock

Weekend Project: 3D Print a Sleek 7-Segment LED Clock

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Combine function and form with this 7-segment LED clock, designed by Kansas-based maker Leonard Lee. It reliably delivers accurate time — down to the second — while at the same time adding a little light to your life.

How many times have you squinted across a room trying to read the time off a cheap dollar store clock? Squash that humiliating feeling forever with this stylish 7-segment LED clock from Thingiverse user leonardlee. Apart from the electronics, it’s completely made from easy-to-assemble 3D printed parts. All you need is a little time. (And a little money…)

In addition to looking great, this timeless (timeful?) piece has a number of fascinating features. Its automatic abilities include NTP time syncing, time zone detection, and daylight savings adjustment. It can also be assembled with or without the 7-segment displays for seconds.

You can mount the 7-segment LED clock on the wall using the two holes in the back. Otherwise, if you prefer that it rest on a desk or table, attach the provided 3D printable stands.

7-Segment LED Clock: What You Need

In order to build leonardlee’s clock, you’ll need to 3D print eight parts, plus the stand. All nine STL files are available for download for free on Thingiverse. As whole segments light up by diffusing single-point LED light through thin translucent plastic, it’s probably best to print with the recommended white PLA.

Below are the non-printed components needed for the 7-segment LED clock, which should together cost around $30:

The Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is needed to upload some code to the D1 Mini. You’ll also need to use some soldering equipment.

Step-by-step animation of the 7-segment LED clock
Step-by-step animation of the 7-segment LED clock

7-Segment LED Clock: Putting it Together

The 3D printed pieces fit together intuitively, with only the electronics adding a bit of complexity. Never fear, though: leonardlee provides a thorough set of assembly instructions (in the “Post-Printing” section, below “Supplies”) as well as a handy step-by-step GIF.

The first step is to prepare the software. This involves uploading code to the D1 Mini using the Arduino IDE, which will likely require you to integrate the ESP8266 boards and install the CH340G driver. (Click here for instruction from Wemos Electronics.)

Up next we have some soldering to do. That is, after fastening together the 3D printed back pieces using the aforementioned nuts and screws. Begin by soldering the level shifting chip to the clock shield PCB. Then, solder the included 8-pin female headers of the D1 Mini as well as the power and LED wires to the clock shield PCB.

You can now slide the clock shield PCB onto the pegs of 3D printed back_hour_minute piece. And then we’re soldering again! Start with connecting the power barrel connector to the power wires, keeping in mind the polarity of your power supply. Then move on to the LED wires, which need to be soldered to the single LEDs that will be positioned in the colon of the back_hour_minute piece. Make sure the LEDs are properly aligned using the arrows on the strip.

The next step is to attach the D1 Mini to the PCB, sliding its male pins into the PCB’s female header. Periodic testing of the circuit should now be possible.

The remaining soldering involves connecting the LEDs through the wires guides around the digits. This will result in two strips of LEDs, one going to the left of the controller (for the hours), and one going to the right (for the minutes and seconds).

Finally, cover all segments and gaps with the corresponding 3D printed pieces and, unless you’re planning to mount the clock on the wall, attach the stands. Let there be light!

  • Zaha Hadid Architects H-Line Hat Reflects Artist’s New York Condos

Zaha Hadid Architects H-Line Hat Reflects Artist’s New York Condos

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Zaha Hadid Architects’ latest work is the H-Line hat, inspired by the firm’s condo at 520 West 28th Street, New York. Designed by boss and collaborator, Patrik Schumacher, the hat was made using 3D printing for a Friends of the High Line fundraiser.

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) recently designed a 3D printed hat for a fundraising event organized by Friends of the High Line, the nonprofit organization that oversees maintenance for the park.

The aim of the event was to raise 98% of the annual budget for the park’s upkeep. Everyone was required to sport headwear at the event, but ZHA’s was especially a head turner.

ZHA director, Patrik Schumacher, designed the “H-Line hat”, which takes inspiration from the recently finished condos beside New York’s High Line. This 520 West 28th residential building in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York was also designed by ZHA.

The resulting blue and white hat was 3D printed in nylon and incorporates swooping shapes. It also has diagonal slits throughout, which mimic the building’s metallic window frames.

In a statement, ZHA had this to say: “The fluid chevrons of 520 West 28th’s facade weave up the building, conveying its split levels and demarcating each residence within… The H-Line hat echoes these chevrons, weaving around the wearer with open and closed forms.”

    Friends of the High Line

For those who aren’t familiar with the High Line, it was opened in 2009, transforming a once-abandoned freight rail line into a beautiful park. As a result, buildings are popping up around it, including the 520 West 28th condos.

The building is the only one in New York City designed by Zaha Hadid herself, who died in 2016. It offers 11-storeys full of luxury amenities but houses just 39 private residencies.

Whether you love or hate the hat by ZHA, it won’t be becoming a new fashion trend in New York anytime soon as the company only designed it for the fundraiser. The firm also won’t be moving from architecture into fashion.

However, a few of the custom-made hats for the event will be auctioned to raise money for Friends of the High Line, but it’s unclear as to whether the 3D printed nylon hat will be one of these. Check the Friends of the High Line website to find out more.

  • 22 Years Later And Crash Bandicoot Is Still As Incredible As Ever

22 Years Later And Crash Bandicoot Is Still As Incredible As Ever

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Today, June 28, Xbox, Switch and PC gamers will finally get to experience the dizzying joy and teeth grinding frustration of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.

So to celebrate the remastered release of one of gaming’s biggest franchises, shipping a box-crushing 50 million copies worldwide, we thought we’d take a look back to a simpler time.

A time before online multiplayer, loot boxes or battle royales, to the origins of Crash and examine what makes him such an iconic character.

Created by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin while they worked for Naughty Dog, Crash Bandicoot was originally exclusive to the then-brand spanking new PlayStation console.

Andy and Jason initially began work on the game in 1994, and took full advantage of the relative power of the PlayStation, abandoning traditional 2D platforms for something a bit more complex, a ‘3D action-platform game’.

As ridiculous as it may sound, in a world where games can render whole worlds on the fly, this was a pretty bold idea at the time, as only racing, fighting and shooting games had entered the third dimension.

Enthralled by the notion of a fully 3D platform, the pair threw out the side-scrolling game they were working on and they began to develop what would become Crash, but then was jokingly known as ‘Sonic’s Ass Game’.

The rather rude nickname came about when the pair, fantasising about what a fully 3d platform player would look like, realised the player would spend an awful lot of time staring at the main character’s posterior.

Despite this concern, the pair continued to work on the game, believing the idea had promise.

The pair were soon proven right when Naughty Dog‘s parent company, Universal Interactive Studios, took an interest in Sonic’s Ass Game.

Deciding to develop it for the new and ‘sexy’ Playstation, Universal set a development budget of $1.7 million for the game and Naughty Dog began the next stage of the project, designing the main character worthy of their grand 3D ambitions.

Taking inspiration from Sonic the Hedgehog and Warner Bro‘s Tasmanian Devil character, Naughty Dog bought a book of Tasmanian animals to search for something which was ‘cute, real, and no one really knew about’.

In the end, they chose three animals as options, the wombat, potoroo, and bandicoot – three animals which look pretty similar if we’re being honest, and artists, Charles Zembillas and Joe Pearson, were recruited to work on the character.

Zembillas and Pearson eventually settled on a design and the character – who would become Crash – was temporarily named ‘Willie the Wombat’.

Taking advantage of their (as of then) unnamed character’s vague Tasmanian origins, Naughty Dog decided to set the games on a secret tropical island, and worked hard to create lush overgrown environments which would hide obstacles from the player.

Unfortunately, it was here they hit a snag.

While they’d populated their jungles with traps, puzzles and enemies, it still felt oddly empty due to the Playstation’s inability to render multiple enemies at once.

Initially, they attempted to remedy this by filling the world with collectable fruits called ‘Wumpa fruit’, but even then the world felt oddly empty, and it wasn’t until super late in the development process Andy hit upon a solution.

They could fill the world with breakable crates as an added obstacle or puzzle for players to navigate.

By now, the game was taking shape but Naughty Dog still needed a villain for ‘Willie the Wombat’ to battle. Inspiration apparently hit while the team was eating a mediocre Italian meal.

Drawing inspiration from another Warner Bros character, this time Brain of Pinky and the Brain fame, Dr Neo Cortex was soon born, along with his minions based on the weasels from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Still though, this new nefarious villain couldn’t seriously face off against a good guy called Willie the Wombat, could he?

Well, Naughty Dog were emphatic in their belief he’d not be called that,  and while preparing the game for E3, they finally decided upon his name – ‘Crash Bandicoot’ – drawing inspiration from the fact he ‘crashed’ through the crates.

Unfortunately though, Universal allegedly thought differently, suggesting the character instead be called ‘Wuzzle the Wombat’ or ‘Ozzie the Otzel’.

However Naughty Dog managed to convince Universal to let them name the game in the end, and the rest is history.

Crash Bandicoot went on to be a smash hit with critics, praising the next generation of graphics, the gorgeous environments, and Crash himself, who was praised for his appearance and hilarious mannerisms.

The game went on to sell over six million units worldwide making it the eight best selling PlayStation game ever made.

It spawned several sequels including The Wrath of Cortex and Warped (both of which are included in the N. Sane Trilogy).

So what made Crash so iconic? Well, there are a couple of factors, the first and most important being, he was designed to be the PlayStation mascot and therefore, has an enduring legacy.

While the concept of a console mascot may have fallen by the wayside these days, back in the early Nineties, games companies still entertained the idea they needed a character synonymous with their consoles.

And while there’s a decent argument to be made for Lara Croft being the PS1 mascot, I think Crash edges her as visually he’s closer to his esteemed competition – Mario and Sonic – and he has the advantage of coming first.

Crash served as Sony’s unofficial PlayStation mascot until the end of 2000, when his games became cross-platform, which gave him five years as the face of the biggest console on the planet (Don’t @ me Nintendo fans).

Not only that, but it’s worth remembering how novel a 3D action platformer was at the time, and while Crash Bandicoot may have been beaten to the punch by Mario 64, the game was one of the first of its kind available on the PS1.

Finally, as I’ve already pointed out, Crash was one of the best selling games ever made for the PlayStation and with good reason – it was a challenging and fun game to play, which people remember fondly.

Isn’t it great that, after so many years, Nintendo, Xbox and PC gamers can experience the joy of playing such a wonderful game?

Just remember not to break the controller while you’re playing ‘High Road’…

  • Dad Meets Gamer Buddy For First Time After Seven Years Playing Together

Dad Meets Gamer Buddy For First Time After Seven Years Playing Together

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Meeting people online is part modern society. Friendships can often migrate into real-life, but for these two gamer buddies, they kept their strictly via Xbox for seven years.

Addey Bartlett, from Hawaii, captured the beautiful moment her dad met up with his Xbox friend for the first time after seven years of bonding through gaming.

The photos of the pair went viral on Twitter, with lots of other people speaking out about their new-age gaming friendship tales.

    Speaking to UNILAD, Addey said:

So basically, my dad has been playing Xbox for years. Like since it came out. My mom has been on him about quitting gaming and literally could not stand it.

We always made fun of him that his only friends are from Xbox. My dad and his Xbox friends literally know each other’s life stories, occupation… they’re like real friends.

My dad always talked about wanted to meet his friends in person and we always have him so much grief making fun of him!

That was about two years ago, and it wasn’t really talked about. Then one of his Xbox friends he’s been playing with for the past seven or eight years was coming to Portland for business and wanted to meet up with him!

At first I was like no that’s literally weird, because he invited my siblings and I to go with him. I honestly just went at first so I could see the dynamic and see if it was weird or not

Even Xbox got involved with the fun, creating a gif with a green and grey artwork of the pair saying ‘Friendships like these happen once every 360 years’.

The gif also had a message at the bottom saying ‘Rare achievement unlocked – battle buddies’.

    Addey continued:

When we picked up his friend James from his hotel with his girlfriend it was literally like picking up a friend he’s known his whole life! They were so excited I was so caught off guard.

We all ended up going to dinner in downtown Portland, and had so much fun. It was so cute to see my dad so happy, it made me realise that it’s literally not weird for people to make real friendships online.

Both of them are completely average dads who just game for fun and gained a true friendship out of it. It was pretty cool and I officially can’t make fun of him anymore for it.

The reactions on Twitter were incredibly positive, and the post received over 217k likes and 50k retweets.

One commenter wrote about their cute story:

Met my best friend on xbox 12-13 years ago and we have been best friends irl for 11 with lots of weekends wasted with split-screen couch co-op, concerts, movies and new year parties and all general bromancing.

    Another said:

I love this! I met my husband, best friend, and tons of other wonderful friends off Xbox Live in real life…it’s the best thing ever.

The family’s new gamer buddy James has met with four of his other gaming buddies so far and now they are all planning a camping trip to Lake Tahoe… sounds like a Paul Rudd movie.

This brings a whole new meaning to internet connection.

  • Dad Distracted During Daughter’s Graduation Because He’s Playing HQ Trivia

Dad Distracted During Daughter’s Graduation Because He’s Playing HQ Trivia

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

When it hits HQ Trivia time, the world freezes to endure 10-second bursts of intense, life-dependant pressure in the attempt to win $5,000 in exchange for their general knowledge.

It has become a time reference around which events are planned, but you can’t always plan for it, especially in the case of, say, your daughter’s high school graduation.

Wyatt Croy, from Oregon, found the most wonderful photos from his younger sister’s graduation where his dad was posing for photos while his hand held the ticket to his potential riches (in the form of the HQ trivia app).

    Speaking to UNILAD, Wyatt said:

We were at my little sister’s graduation, taking photos afterwards like normal and I did remember that HQ was going on while we were taking pictures, but I kind of assumed we were all just there to take the pictures and going to skip this round of the game in the middle of the graduation.

Once I got home, I was going through photos to send them out to my family, and then I noticed glowing by my dad’s hands in some of the photos. So I zoomed in and realised he was on HQ the whole time, which I thought was really funny and then I made that tweet.

I was really surprised at the reaction it got on Twitter. I tweeted in right before I went to bed, and when I woke up the retweets were in the 2,000s.

The game has a big following right now so it kind of makes sense that people liked it so much. I think people can really relate him trying to play no matter what’s going on.

Talking about his dad’s reaction, Wyatt said:

I didn’t mention to him at first, but after it went viral I told him lots of people found the photo funny. At first he was a bit nervous that the whole world thought he was some terrible father, but soon he found it really funny and my whole family was laughing about it.

He didn’t say much about it, he just said ‘you know, it’s six o’clock, of course I’m going to do the quiz’.

Wyatt said he started playing HQ Trivia at college in California, and when he went home to visit he showed it to his whole family and by the time he went back again, they were all hooked.

Wyatt posted the photos to Twitter and it received over 369 retweets and 5.1k likes, with commenters commending his dad for having his ‘priorities straight’.

    One commenter wrote:

    Another said:

College doesn’t pay for itself yo

It’s a very addictive game to be fair, if my kid’s graduation was at HQ time, it’d be an under the table job.

  • Bully 2 To Be Released After Red Dead Redemption 2 According To Leak

Bully 2 To Be Released After Red Dead Redemption 2 According To Leak

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The original Bully provoked both controversy and critical praise upon its release back in 2006.

Set at the gothic Bullworth Academy, the game was brutal in its portrayal of the horrors and miseries of high school life.

Many players loved the wit, memorable band of characters and well conceived narrative; whereas others feared the way it depicted the serious issue of bullying.

Well now it appears we’re in for another peek at the turbulent life of boarding school pupil, Jimmy Hopkins, with a potential Bully 2 in the the works…

A ‘Rockstar Games insider’ has made the following intriguing reveal on the GTA Forums page:

Bully 2 is indeed in development and is supposed to be the next game after RDR2.

Red Dead Redemption 2, is expected to be available to play after October 26 2018, so not too much of a wait now…

Find out if you’re the typical Xbox gamer below:

Another forum member suggested how a Bully sequel could be available as early as Spring 2019, playable on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

    This member said:

It’s no secret that they have been working on it at several points till now but shelved it in between to focus on Max Payne 3 and probably shelved it a second time to help out with GTA V. [sic]

I heard from a source close to R* that they have a working prototype for Bully 2, however it’s unknown on which engine it runs.

It’s been years since we were last roaming the grounds of Bullworth Academy, Old Bullworth Vale, Bullworth Town, New Coventry; encountering Bullies, Nerds, Preppies, Greasers, and Jocks at every turn.

Naturally, players are interested in how the game will have progressed or shifted during this time.

For instance, will we be right back in Jimmy’s shoes just as if he has been preserved in amber all this time? Or will he have moved up to an equally prestigious and vicious college? Bullington University perhaps?

Some fans have even suggested there could be a new protagonist ready to shake things up?

Some people believe Rockstar‘s participation – for ‘corporate reasons’ – at E3 is further evidence of the company preparing to roll out Bully 2.

Back in 2009, fans were excited when musician Shawn Lee, who penned the score for Bully – described the sequel as being ‘not in the distant future’.

Two years after this reveal, Rockstar boss, Dan Houser, explained the team were waiting for the ‘excitement or disappointment and everything else of the experience’ to pass before delivering a sequel.

This iconic game has been shoved in a locker for too long, it’s high time Rockstar jumped on their skateboard and brought this classic game to a new generation.

While Universal Studios currently holds the film rights to the GoW franchise, not much has been revealed in terms of production or casting. However, this might change thanks to interest from the Hollywood A-Lister.

During an interview with GameSpot, where he was promoting his latest film Hotel Artemis (which also stars the brilliant Jodie Foster), Big Dave revealed how much he would love to strap on the armour and wield the chainsaw rifle of Marcus Fenix.

During a Twitter Q&A, one user wrote to him – saying they hope he’s asked ‘to play Marcus Fenix in the Gears of War movie!’.

Bautista replied to the tweet, saying:

I’ve been pursuing Gears of War for years now. I believe it’s in the hands of Universal Studios. And I’ve been knocking on their door and badgering them and they are so sick of me (laughs), phoning in and asking them where they are with that project. But, yes, Marcus Fenix is absolutely a dream role for me. I want that role.

According to GameSpot, a GoW movie has been in the works for a few years now after it got the official go-ahead from Universal. They also acquired writer Shane Salerno, who is writing the follow-up films to James Cameron’s Avatar, to pen the script.

Fans of both Bautista and the GoW franchise seem keen on him taking on the role too, so keen in fact a Change.org petition has been started to make it happen. Started by Peter Byrne, the petition has already gained 543 signatures, with the aim to achieve 1000.

    Byrne says:

Over the years of Dave being fan cast as Marcus, he has built up quite the repertoire of starring in very successful franchises, including; Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade Runner and James Bond.

I’ve personally been a fan of Dave since his early days as ‘The Animal’ in WWE. So to see him enthusiastic about playing Marcus Fenix in a full blown Gears of War movie is amazing to me.

For those of you who are Team Xbox/Microsoft, you’ll be very familiar with the GoW series. Making its debut on the Xbox 360 it was one of the major exclusive titles (along with the Halo franchise) which helped Microsoft become a juggernaut in the video games industry, putting them in direct competition with Sony’s PlayStation.

The original GoW was an intense cover-based shooter, with John DiMaggio voicing the character of Marcus Fenix. While the name may not sound familiar to you, you will probably recognise him as the voice of Bender Rodriguez, the foul-mouthed- beer-swilling robot from Matt Groening’s high underrated – as well as underappreciated – Futurama series.

  • An Entire Community of 3D Printed Homes is Coming to Eindhoven Next Year

An Entire Community of 3D Printed Homes is Coming to Eindhoven Next Year

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Eindhoven University is partnering with various companies to 3D print a community of five houses. The concrete structures will be fully habitable, and will be available to residents next year.

3D printed structures are being erected across the world, but a heavy portion of this concrete additive manufacturing innovation seems to be centered in the Netherlands. Last year, the Eindhoven University of Technology and the UK-based construction company BAM began 3D printing a functional bicycle bridge in the city.

Now, the university is working with the municipality of Eindhoven and four companies; Van Wijnen, Vesteda, Saint-Gobain Weber Beamix and Witteveen+Bos to create an entire community of 3D printed houses.

The collaborative effort is called Project Milestone; an effort to 3D print habitable concrete homes in the Eindhoven neighborhood of Meerhoven next year. The ambitious plan is to print five homes in the same area, making this the first time that a community of homes are being 3D printed. As the habitable structures will be produced one after the other, there will be room to improve upon each of the designs as the construction process carries on.

“The idea came about two years ago during the Dutch Design Week… We have managed to control the printing technique and now we want to know what it is like to live in,” explains Theo Salet, who is in charge of the TU/e’s 3D Concrete Printing Center.

Would You Live in a 3D Printed Home in the Netherlands?

The project will be conducted in various phases, starting with the first 3D printed home, which will have just one floor, being printed off-site on the university grounds. However, the plan is to gradually add more floors – ending with a final residence with three floors that will be directly produced on-site.

“This means that every new home can benefit from advancing insights and knowledge and can be adapted directly to the wishes of the residents,” adds Salet.

While the resident’s will be able to provide feedback during the building process, the houses can’t be completely adapted to their wishes as they must still comply with local building regulations.

For example, they’ll be more sustainable, affordable and quicker to build than regular homes. Architects can also benefit from the technology as they have more freedom of form and choice, which will likely result in five distinct house designs. The initial architectural plan is inspired by boulders in a green landscape, and was designed by Houben/Van Mierlo architects.

By the middle of next year, the hope is to having the first tenants moving into these one of a kind homes. The Eindhoven-based apartment renting agency Vesteda is the current prospective buyer for the community, and would rent them out to potential residents.

  • Newcastle University Researchers 3D Print Human Corneas

Newcastle University Researchers 3D Print Human Corneas

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Researchers from Newcastle University, UK, 3D printed human corneas for the first time. To do this, they mixed stem cells from a healthy donor cornea with a gel and collagen to create a printable bio-ink.

The cornea, or the outer-layer of the human eye, plays an important role in focusing vision. Every year, around 10 million people worldwide require eye-surgery to prevent corneal blindness.

Worse yet, around 5 million people lose their sight in both eyes yearly due to corneal dysfunction. But, there is currently a shortage in transplantable corneas worldwide. However, 3D printing could change this.

Working on a solution are researchers from Newcastle University in the UK. The researchers have now 3D printed human corneas for the first time.

What we have shown is that it is feasible to print corneas using co-ordinates taken from a patient’s eye,” said Che Connon, Professor of Tissue Engineering at Newcastle University, who led the work.

3D Printed Corneas Ready to Transplant in 5 Years?

The corneas are possible using a special bio-ink, that the researchers create by mixing healthy donor cornea stem cells with a gel called alginate, which is taken from seaweed, and collagen.

Our unique bio-gel — a combination of alginate and collagen — keeps the stem cells alive while producing a material which is stiff enough to hold its shape but soft enough to be squeezed out the nozzle of a 3D printer,” Connon said.

This bio-ink was then printed in concentric circles using a low-cost bioprinter. Connon adds that they are not alone in their research, with many teams currently engaged in creating bio-inks for creating 3D printed corneas.

However, this is the first time in which a shaped cornea was created. Previously, only flat tissue was created. The Newcastle team’s work also show that building a cornea to a patient’s specification is also possible.

Now, the 3D printed corneas are undergoing further testing. They are being produced and tested at the Newcastle University’s Institute of Genetic Medicine. The hope is that within just five years, 3D printed corneas will be available for transplants, solving the shortage problem.

The researchers have published a proof-of-concept research paper in Experimental Eye Research.
