Starting December 15th — December 23rd, get SUPERHOT with your Twitch Prime membership! If you’re not a Twitch Prime member, you can sign up for a free trial at twitchprime.com.
SUPERHOT is the first person shooter where time moves only when you move. No regenerating health bars. No conveniently placed ammo drops. It’s just you, outnumbered and outgunned, grabbing the weapons of fallen enemies to shoot, slice, and maneuver through a hurricane of slow-motion bullets.
With its unique, stylized graphics SUPERHOT finally adds something new and disruptive to the FPS genre. SUPERHOT’s polished, minimalist visual language helps you concentrate on the most important — on the fluidity of gameplay and cinematic beauty of the fight.

We’re teaming up with Prime Video to air two upcoming NFL football games on Twitch, no Prime membership required.
It’s a sportsball double-header today on Twitch! If you can’t wait to spam Twitch chat during NBA G-League basketball, you can get started a day early with Thursday Night Football.
We’re teaming up with Prime Video to air two upcoming NFL football games on Twitch, no Prime membership required.
Watching the game on Twitch is like hanging out on the world’s biggest couch. Chat is right there with you for every touchdown, every turnover, every questionable call, and every great one. Last week’s broadcast featured a game that came down to the wire, and the fans were out in force. Who other than Twitch Chat could come up with pure poetry like this:
SPAM THIS CHEESE TO HELP DREW BREES
Basically it’s kind of like esports… just without the ‘e’.
Want to see what happens when the Twitch community gets ahold of analog sports?
First up, the Denver Broncos take on the Indianapolis Colts in Thursday Night Football. Coverage starts at 7:30 pm Eastern time, and kickoff is at 8:25.
After the game, stick around for a sneak peek at Jean-Claude Van Johnson, a new Prime Original that asks the question: “What if Jean-Claude Van Damme — yes, THAT Jean-Claude Van Damme — was, in fact, a secret agent?”
Prime users can start binge watching Season 1 on Friday, but anyone with an Amazon account can check out the first episode this Thursday on Twitch after Thursday Night Football.
When we launched webhooks in October, we told developers that was only the start. Today, we’re excited to move forward once again and bring you a webhook for streams data.
The Stream Up/Down webhook immediately notifies you when a streamer goes online, offline, or starts a Vodcast. Now your integrations no longer have to rely on polling to see when a streamer comes online, and your applications can react to streamers coming online in near real time!
Get Clip & Create Clip Endpoints
We’re also launching two new endpoints for Clips: Get Clip and Create Clip. When we talked to you at TwitchCon, this was an API that many of you were excited for, and now, we’re excited to announce they’re here.
Get Clip allows you to get information on Clips by their ID, such as who created it, which creator was streaming, or what game they were playing.
Create Clip allows you to programmatically make Clips on streams with a simple API call. For instance, when a streamer gets a new sub, or someone cheers them with Bits, you can call the Create Clip API and automatically generate a clip of that amazing moment for a streamer. Or you can use this with our Streams Metadata API to capture clips of people playing your favorite Overwatch hero. We’re excited to see what other ideas you have!
Both Create Clip and Get Clip endpoints are launching in Preview, which means the features and functionality are a bit limited for now. We have a stricter rate limit on the Create Clip endpoint (so you might see more 429s than you expect), and the Get Clip endpoint doesn’t currently support bulk calling as our other endpoints do. We’re working on these updates right now, but in the meantime, get familiar with what we’ve developed so far so you can hit the ground running when these features fully launch.
Top Games
We’ve also added a way for you to see the top games currently on Twitch! Just like in v5, you’re now able to quickly query the Get Top Games endpoint and see what’s popular.
Let’s Talk Rate Limits
We’ve had a lot of questions about how to increase rate limits. Please send an email to APIratelimitrequest@twitch.tv if you’d like to request a rate limit increase for Webhooks and/or the new Twitch API, and we can start that discussion with you.
Keep sharing your feedback about what you’d like to see and use. We’re listening in the forums and TwitchDev chat.
Watching basketball is great, but it’s even better when you’re watching every monster dunk live with thousands of other fans. We’re happy to announce that the NBA G League, the NBA’s official minor league, is coming to Twitch and we’re bringing the arena experience right along with it. Starting this Friday, we’ll be broadcasting up to six NBA G League games a week throughout the season. You can check out the first weekly schedule right here.
Twitch chat can add hype to any stream, even grannies reading children’s stories, so custom emotes will, of course, be a part of the G League experience on Twitch. Chat, we’re passing you the rock, don’t let us down. Sure you could yell at your screen the old fashioned way, but the neighbors will talk.
But chat is merely a warmup. To create a truly new way to watch, the NBA G League channel will feature custom Extensions that let you track player, team, and league stats right from the video player, as well as the ability to earn loyalty points by watching games and other interactions, with even more cool stuff on the way. The only thing missing is a t-shirt cannon, but we’re working on it.
We’re also teaming up with some of your favorite Partners (who happen to be hoops fanatics) for exclusive co-streams during some of our first live broadcasts. Watch, chat, and rant along with their communities and see if they can call the games better than the pros. GoldGlove, Akademiks and VernNotice are among those with scheduled co-streams during the first week of games. You can find the complete co-stream schedule on our NBA G League page.
We’ll see you on the floor, don’t forget to hydrate because something something you’re on fire.
We’re tremendously proud to be a place where thousands of creators are free to make the content they want to make. And we’re equally proud of the millions of viewers who make Twitch so vibrant and unique. Whatever your part, we’d like a moment of your time to talk about a threat to our collective community in the United States, the impending loss of net neutrality.
Net neutrality is the principle that forbids internet service providers (ISPs) from discriminating against data from a specific app, service, or platform. It’s a cornerstone of how the internet has always worked. However, current FCC leadership wants to do away net neutrality, and will vote on the issue this month.
Without net neutrality, ISPs can, for any reason, restrict or charge more for access to specific content, including Twitch.
The loss of net neutrality would be a buff to ISPs and a nerf to consumers. Its repeal could have a serious impact on our community, especially for our creators who do so much to make Twitch the unique place it is.
Here is what our CEO, Emmett Shear had to say:
”Net neutrality has played an important role in the history of Twitch. Without it, we might not be here today, and our streamers might not be here tomorrow. Net neutrality prevents ISPs from abusing their position of power, such as giving priority to specific sites, slowing down access to sites that refuse to pay for a fast lane, and arbitrarily blocking sites. Because our streamer community — many of which are small business owners — depend on their viewers having easy access to their channels and reliable quality of service, repealing net neutrality will erode the power of the internet to enable and create these types of jobs. This is why we are lending our voice to championing a free and open internet.”
The FCC’s decision is not yet final. All around the country and across social media, people are taking action and speaking out against this potentially bleak future for the internet. We’d like to invite you to learn more by visiting the nonpartisan Countable.us. There you can read more about net neutrality and easily contact the FCC before the vote is held on December 14.

We’re super excited to announce the launch of our Twitch Skill on all Alexa-enabled devices in the U.S. Now your dream of controlling Twitch with your voice (you’ve had that dream, right?) can become reality. The Twitch Skill lets you play your favorite channels, discover new streamers, get notified when your favorite channels start streaming, and get a reminder when your Twitch Prime subscription is available to use.
So, how do you make this magic happen? Simply enable the notifications permission for the Twitch skill in your Alexa app to start receiving them. Alexa will let you know anytime a followed channel you have notifications enabled for starts broadcasting. To manage notifications on channels you follow, just go to https://www.twitch.tv/settings/notifications.
Other features supported in this version of the Skill include:
If you’ve linked your Twitch account, say “Alexa, ask Twitch for followed channels” or “Alexa, tell Twitch to show me channels I follow.”
Discover a new channel for your favorite game or Twitch category by requesting, “Alexa, ask Twitch who’s playing World of Warcraft” or “Alexa, ask Twitch to suggest an IRL channel”.
Get some of the most popular live channels by saying, “Alexa, ask Twitch for popular channels” or “Alexa, ask Twitch which streams are popular.”
Find out the most popular games and categories currently streaming by asking, “Alexa, ask Twitch for popular games” or “Alexa, tell Twitch to suggest a game for me.” You’ll hear a list of popular games/categories and you can select one to hear the most popular channels for it.
Play a channel directly by name with “Alexa, ask Twitch to play [Channel Name]” or “Alexa, ask Twitch to start [Channel Name]”. If Alexa isn’t understanding the channel name correctly, try following the channel and then asking “for followed channels” instead.
Ah, there you are. Let’s take a trip near Annecy in southeastern France with Anthony_Kongphan, CDNThe3rd, DizzyKitten, ElspethandLIRIK. Starting on December 13th through December 17th, watch as each streamer fends for themselves playing Free-For-All Deathmatch mode in Overwatch.
How does it work?
Each streamer will compete individually in an effort to rack up as many points as possible within a two-hour time period.
1st place in Free-For-All game — 15 points 2nd place in Free-For-All game — 10 points 3rd place in Free-For-All game — 5 points Play of the Game — 10 points
In addition to these points, streamers can earn additional points with their communities’ help. Yep, you have control over who wins! Just tweet using the hashtag #ChateauShowdown accompanied by your favorite streamers name. Example: #ChateauShowdownCDNTHE3RD
What’s in it for me?
A total of 350 digital copies of Overwatch (70 per broadcast) will be given away while each streamer is competing. Tune in to each streamer’s channel for more information!
Prep some hot chocolate, tea, or other warm beverage of choice and get ready to watch some more amazing cosplay fabrication! This month we have Karacorvus, TheJediManda, and KellyDanielle here to show you what projects they’re working on, and even dish out some tips and how-tos for cosplay newbies!
Karacorvus was inspired to start cosplaying after being inspired by elaborate armor builds and wanting to create something similar. Her all time favorite build was Phara from Overwatch, mainly due to her complete female badassery. Currently she’s working on Aranea Highwind from Final Fantasy XV. Her dog is also known to try and steal the show, so make sure to tune in for creativity, science, and doggo time!
Having studied costume design in college, getting into cosplay was a natural fit for JediManda. After dressing so many actors in her costumes, she finally wanted to be the one to wear them instead! She’s currently working on her own original design of a gown worn by Anastasia from the 1997 film. You can also tune in to her streams for Star Wars theory discussions as well as painting sessions!
KellyDanielle always enjoyed making and dressing up in costumes, but her love of cosplay all began after she was invited to a charity event and dressed up as Elsa. Harley Quinn is one of her favorite costumes, and she’s currently working on another favorite: Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn. Kelly not only streams cosplay, but you can also see her play RPGs and enjoy a community full of positivity.
The full schedule for all of the front page streams is below:
Would you like your channel to be featured as part of the Cosplay Showcase? You can apply by going to fill out this form!
Now it’s even easier to support the streamers you love and give the gift of Twitch for the holidays! Starting now through January 6, get 20% off the first month of a new subscription to any channel offering a recurring subscription on Twitch.
For the first time ever, gifted subs are also discounted by 20%! Whichever option you choose, streamers will still receive the same amount of support from your subscription as if it was bought at the regular price.
Gifting a subscription to someone is super easy. Just click their name in chat, and when their user card pops up you’ll see a Gift a Sub button. Or you can click the Subscribe button at the top of a channel page, select Gift a Sub, and then type their username into the search field to select your lucky recipient.
Get in the holiday spirit this year by supporting streamers, and spread the love by gifting subs, all at a sweet 20% discount!
Burning (Freezing?) Questions
What do you mean ‘new’ subscription?
It means you can only get this discount on a channel you have not been subscribed to for at least 32 days.
Is there a limit to how many subscriptions or gifted subs I can buy at the 20% discount?
Nope! As long as they qualify as new, you’re good to go.
Does this apply to both Partner and Affiliate channels?
Yes to both as long as they offer a recurring subscription.
Does this apply to the $4.99, $9.99 and $24.99 Subscription options?
Yes to all three.
How long will a subscription be 20% off?
Only the first month of a new recurring sub is 20% off. After one month, it will return to normal price. Gifted subs only last one month, and that month is 20% off during this sale.
What about tax and VAT?
The 20% discount is on the base price of the subscription before any taxes are applied. Taxes are applied on the discounted price.
When exactly is this happening?
Starting now and ending 11:59PM PDT January 6.
Where can I receive the 20% off discount?
20% off the first month of any new subscription is available on the desktop web browser (www.twitch.tv), an Android mobile web browser (m.twitch.tv), and the subscriptions landing page (subs.twitch.tv). This discount is not available on the Twitch Mobile App nor the Twitch Desktop App.
20% off gifted subscriptions is available on the desktop web browser (www.twitch.tv). This discount is not available on a mobile web browser, the subscriptions landing page, the Twitch Mobile App nor the Twitch Desktop App.
Can I buy a subscription to a channel for which I was gifted a sub?
Yes, you can. When you have an active gift subscription to a channel, you can purchase a subscription either using the subscription button in the upper right of the video player, or on your subscription management page. You will not be charged until after your gift subscription ends.
Can I buy someone an upgraded sub as a gift? My friend has a $4.99 sub and I want to gift him an upgrade to a $24.99 sub for a month.
Upgrades are not currently available through Subscription Gifting.
Can I decline to receive a gifted subscription?
When someone gifts you a sub, you will automatically receive the subscription, and the Partner or Affiliate subscribed to will receive the support from that subscription. You may choose to disable the subscription benefits if that channel does not suit you, but we want to make sure the support still goes to that streamer, as the gifter intended. You can disable Gift Subscription benefits from your Subscriptions management page.
Are gifted subscriptions refundable?
No. All purchases are final.
How about team subscriptions?
Subscription Gifting is not available for team subscriptions at this time.
Can I gift a subscription through my Twitch Prime free subscription
No, Twitch Prime subscriptions can not be used to gift a subscription to another user.
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in, watched, and gave feedback on our first ever Twitch Studios Hosting and Interview Workshop this past July. We were honored by your enthusiasm and learned so much from your comments on that pilot event! That’s why we’re so excited to announce, as part of the Twitch Studios Talent Development Program, that our second Hosting and Interview Workshop will take place this February.
As before, this workshop will focus on helping on-camera hosting talent improve their skills and hireability through training, lectures, and activities. A full panel of hosting and interview experts including Twitch Staff, our Twitch Studios Ambassadors — Ezekiel_iii, HelloKellyLink, and Seltzer, and a few special guests will be on-site to share their knowledge, experience, and techniques. Attendees will walk away with insight, resources, a headshot, and video assets. However, if you aren’t able to join us in person, never fear: just like last time, seminars from the workshop will be streamed on /twitch and available to all broadcasters for co-streaming.
Thanks to your feedback, we’ve also made a few upgrades! This second workshop will take place over two days, instead of one, offering more content and more opportunity for hands-on and in-studio practice for participants. Also, instead of being confined to the U.S., we are now able to extend an invitation for streamers worldwide to audition.
An open call for auditions begins today, and interested parties can submit video samples of hosting/interviewing work to be considered here! All applicants must have a Twitch channel in good standing, and be aged 18 or over. Chosen participants will travel to Twitch HQ for the workshop on February 1st-2nd with travel and accommodations provided by Twitch.
As always, Twitch Studios is thankful for your participation and, especially, for your constructive feedback that helps us keep working to make our community offerings bigger and better. We hope to see you there, either in person, or on stream!
FAQ:
What if I want to audition, but I don’t have experience as a host, or an interview reel?
We need to see you work on camera, but don’t worry if you don’t have loads of experience or a professional reel! It’s ok to turn on your webcam and show us a demo interview or other pieces of on camera work in footage that you made just for this audition. This workshop is made for and built to provide value for hosts or any and all levels!
Will I be guaranteed work with Twitch by attending?
The purpose of the workshop is to give you additional tools and support to help develop your talents. This is one of many efforts from Twitch Studios to provide resources for hosts and interviewers. While we cannot guarantee work, we do strive to establish a working foundation with each attendee and look for ways to expand upon that in the future.
Will you have all the kinks worked out this time?
We learned so much from our last workshop and we’re excited to implement as much of it as possible in an effort to make this second workshop even better than the first! Participants should remember, though, that this second workshop is still part of the “pilot” process for this program, and we’ll be looking for help and insight to help us as we work to offer even more and better resources for hosts and interviewers in the future.

Everyone’s QB’s are hitting the deck, because the week’s Twitch Prime Legend is New Orleans Saints sackmaster Rickey Jackson, with an 83 OVR!
Jackson was a member one of the best linebacking crews in NFL history, the Saints’ “Dome Patrol” (Which sounds like a really sweet Sci-Fi movie). He was undersized but went hard in the yard on every play, racking up 128 career sacks, 8 interceptions, 4 All-Pro selections, and 6 Pro Bowls. Offensive lineman had trouble handling his speed off the edge. Jackson grew up catching rabbits in sugar cane fields for money, so catching QB’s was easy for him.
Fun fact: Jackson’s first name was originally spelled “Ricky”; but he changed it to “Rickey” in high school. Because when you’re that good, you can do whatever you want.
About Twitch Prime Legends
We’re teaming up with EA Sports Madden NFL 18 to give Twitch Prime Members at least an 83 rated Madden Ultimate Team Twitch Prime Legend and Collectible every week from 8/22–2/3. That’s up to 25 retired NFL ballers for you to add to your roster, plus collectibles to jack up their stats to a 90 OVR.
When you join Twitch Prime, you can claim your 83 rated Rickey Jackson + 1 Collectible in addition to an 85 OVR Reggie White + 5 Collectibles, allowing you to automatically start with a 90 OVR Legend immediately. So start a free 30-day trial, or link your current Prime account to Twitch here.

Twitch is excited to announce the Hearthstone Dungeon Run Challenge that will begin this week in celebration of the launch of Hearthstone: Kobolds and Catacombs on December 7th. With over $30,000 in prizes at stake, all streamers on Twitch are invited to participate for a chance to delve deep and immortalize themselves within Hearthstone’s eternal lore!
Upon release of Kobolds and Catacombs, the new Dungeon Run will be unlocked for free to every Hearthstone account. On top of existing rewards for playing the game mode, a special “Candle King” cardback is awarded for clearing the game mode with all nine classes.
The Dungeon Run Challenge is simple — obtain the Candle King cardback in the fewest attempts per class possible. The event is separated into two phases:
Phase 1: For 10 days upon expansion release, this will be an open call to all Twitch streamers to participate! Gather you best score by minimizing your attempts while clearing Dungeon Run. Every defeat or retire will count as an additional attempt for that class. Your final tally of attempts will be your score — the lower, the better. Do you think you have the guts, the stamina, and the cunning to even post a perfect score of nine attempts?
Phase 2: Upon verification of the top 10 scores, remaining finalists will qualify for the final Survival round. Each finalist will have 24 hours to choose a class to clear the Dungeon run in as few attempts possible. Every defeat or retire will count as an additional attempt. The three best scores in the Survival rounds will be declared the winners! If necessary, in the event of a tie, survival rounds will repeat until a clear winner is determined.
Phase 1 of the Challenge begins at on December 7 the moment Kobolds and Catacombs releases on the Americas server and will conclude on December 17 at 11:59PM PST. Any submission after the deadline will be invalid. Phase 2 will be announced on a later date once the 10 finalists have been verified and contacted by Twitch.
Note: On December 7, Kobolds and Catacombs will be dropping first on the Americas server. Europe and Asia server players can either start an Americas Hearthstone account to access the free Dungeon Run content (make sure to clear the tutorial first!) or simply wait for the expansion on their respective server.
Some streamers who will be participating:
How do I participate?
To participate, simply use your Twitch account to broadcast the entirety of your submission under the “Hearthstone: Dungeon Run Challenge” Community tab.
If you do not have a Twitch account, signing up is free and easy! We highly recommend you research how to stream on your own through the Twitch subreddit or other available resources online/posted at the bottom.
A valid submission must include:
A successful Dungeon Run completion with all nine (9) Hearthstone classes consecutively — Druid, Hunter, Mage, Shaman, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Warlock, Warrior. Order of class completion does not matter. Repeating a class dungeon will only add to the attempts counter.
Entirety of the runs must be fully broadcasted on Twitch under the proper Communities tab. Any partial completion offline will invalidate the submission. Recordings are only valid submissions if broadcasted on the Twitch channel in its entirety.
I finished! How do I submit to verify if I have won anything?
Go on Twitter and tweet @Twitch with a link to your VODs. Make sure you include the #DungeonRunChallenge hashtag!
What if I disconnect halfway or my stream goes down?
You are responsible for your own internet connection. Triple check your settings and test stability before you start. Any partial runs will be reviewed for authenticity, so submitting with chopped up VODs is at your own risk. If it is verified that your disconnect caused a loss, that will unfortunately count as an attempt.
I cleared a couple classes/started a few practice runs before I began streaming. Do those runs count towards my score?
Yes, it unfortunately will be counted towards the score. Your score is your total attempts per class for the cardback and will be verified by Blizzard for authenticity. Your submission will also be invalid if the broadcast VODs do not all 9 classes cleared in Dungeon Mode.
I accidentally started another run on a class I already cleared. Does that count towards my score?
Yes, so make sure you carefully evaluate which classes you completed and which you have yet to start.
I found out about the challenge a few days after it started and I already did a few dungeon runs for fun. How can I still participate?
You may create a new submission by starting fresh on a different server or if you have another valid Battle.net account. Remember, it’s the challenge is to obtain the cardback in fewest attempts per class possible — so try to avoid practice runs on your official submission account.
Can I submit more than once?
No, you can only submit one time so make sure your best clear attempt is the one you submit!
Do I have to have an Americas account? What if I decide to switch servers in between?
Playing on Americas is only if you want to start the challenge immediately upon release of the expansion. You can participate on any server, but you only get one submission for that server. Switching to another region will count as another entire submission. When you start is up to you. The Dungeon Run content is free on all servers so all that is needed is to complete the tutorial for access to solo adventure content. There is no separate prizes for server accomplishments.
Can I do play on multiple accounts on the same time?
Each valid submission must show only 1 account being played at a time. Playing multiple servers or multiple accounts simultaneously will invalidate your run.
I got the best score, but I did not stream it. Can I claim the bounty?
Unfortunately, if you did not stream the completion of the challenge in its entirety, you are not eligible to win. However, if you record locally on your computer, you may broadcast the VOD on Twitch. However, you must accept that the run must first be streamed in its entirety before officially claiming the prize.
Can I have a friend on call or next to me?
Absolutely. It can be any sort of team effort, but we will credit it to the official owner (by email account) of the stream. Just don’t drag us into the division of the spoils. 😛

The Game Awards are making a return this Thursday, December 7. Of course, just like previous years, you can watch the whole show at 5:30pm PT on Twitch and debate Game of the Year, Best Narrative, and all the other categories with tons of other gamers in chat. And this year, we’re stepping things up with a next-level experience.
First, anyone can co-stream The Game Awards on their own personal Twitch channel. Whether you want to add your own colorful commentary or just keep chat clear for your community, this option is for you. It’s super easy, and we’re including the full details on how to co-stream The Game Awards below.
Second, we’ve created an interactive, only-on-Twitch experience that lets your community predict category winners before they’re announced via a custom overlay Extension right on your channel. If you’re co-streaming The Game Awards, all you need to do is activate the Extension. After that, it’s up to you and your community to vote on who you think will take home the award. The community that predicts winners with the highest accuracy will win an exclusive chat badge for a month and all associated bragging rights. If you have predictions on Best RPG, Most Anticipated Game, Trending Gamer, and more, this one is for you.
This year, we’re stepping things up with an interactive, only-on-Twitch experience.
Okay. Here’s how to do all that cool stuff we just mentioned:
The moment you activate the Extension, you’ll “create” a new community. There’s no need to do anything else.
Viewers will be able to vote for who they think will win each category directly from your co-stream, and also see how the community is tracking in real-time.
Activate The Game Awards overlay from the Extension Manager in your dashboard.
If you’re new to co-streaming, fear not. We have a few tips ready from Twitch veterans:
“When co-hosting, your job is to add value to the event that is being produced for you. Have an idea how you will contribute, be it commentary, jokes, or something else. You don’t have control over what’s being shown, so try not to have too much of a rigid schedule and talking points.” — Tucker (iijeriichoii)
“Co-hosting on Twitch is an invitation to broadcasters to experience gaming news with their audience the second it is announced. Keep in mind, portions of your audience might not know what to expect, so being knowledgeable about what might be shown can help build up the excitement. While it’s important to add your own voice and sometimes camera to the broadcast, don’t take away from the stream itself. Otherwise, your audience might go elsewhere!” — jp (itmeJP)
The Game Awards are kicking off Thursday, December 7 at 5:30pm PT at /TheGameAwards. Mark your calendars so you don’t miss the show, and once it starts, check out the Game Awards directory for a full list of streamers co-streaming the event.
Twitch is excited to work with various Productions, Studios, and Events to offer co-streaming as an option to our broadcasters. However, not everything on Twitch is available for co-streaming and we suggest that broadcasters ensure the events they’d like to co-stream are available to do so prior to going live. For more information about DMCA and Twitch, please view our guidelines here.
We got out our favorite frying pan, oiled it up real good, and cooked up a tasty tournament for a great cause! On December 5th starting at 10am PT, 64 teams from North America and Europe will compete in a $100K charity tournament playing PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS (ya know, PUBG).
Who’s playing you ask? Well, how about BdoubleO, Djarii, LIRIK, SheriffEli, shroud, summit1g, WELOVEGAMES, and many many many more of your favorite streamers. The top 3 winners of this tournament will have an opportunity to select a charity to receive a donation from Twitch in the participant’s name. A large contribution will also be made directly to Gamers Outreach, who provide kids in hospitals with recreation and therapy through the power of video games.
Each region will pit 32 duos against each other in five matches, starting with the EU bracket at 10am PT, followed by the NA bracket at 2pm PT. You can catch the match on any of the participant’s channels, as well as the main /playBATTLEGROUNDS Twitch channel with commentary by Matt “Matrym” Oates and Steve “Toffees” Pierce.
10:00AM PT / 7:00PM CET — EU Game 1 10:45AM PT / 7:45PM CET — EU Game 2 11:30AM PT / 8:30PM CET — EU Game 3 12:15AM PT / 9:15PM CET — EU Game 4 1:00PM PT / 10:00PM CET — EU Game 5

Because of its scalability and low cost, HTTP streaming is now widely used for live broadcasting on the open Internet. A number of platforms including Twitch, Twitter, and Amazon Video are now providing live video services based on HLS or DASH for both user-generated content (UGC) and professionally-generated content (PGC).
However, in comparison to more traditional live streaming protocols such as RTMP, HLS and DASH incur much longer end-to-end broadcast latency. The latency is typically 10–30 seconds depending on implementations. On the other hand, low (less than 5 second) broadcast latency is highly demanded as it is critical to interactivity between a broadcaster and their audience.
One of the most successful efforts to reduce the latency of HTTP streaming is to utilize the HTTP chunked transfer coding, which enables a video segment to be generated and transmitted concurrently. For more technical details, please read Twitter’s recent technical blog “Introducing LHLS Media Streaming.”
However, compared with segment-based HTTP download, chunked transfer coding makes the bandwidth estimation a lot harder for any ABR playback algorithm. This Grand Challenge is to call for signal-processing/machine-learning algorithms that can effectively estimate download bandwidth based on the noisy samples of chunked-based download throughput.
Problem Description:
For segment-based HTTP streaming, the download bandwidth can simply be calculated as
Bandwidth = segment size / segment download time
This is, in general, quite accurate, since the size of a video segment is typically large enough (1 or more seconds of video data).
On the other hand, in HTTP chunked transfer coding, a video segment is transmitted in multiple smaller pieces, i.e. the response to one HTTP request is broken into a series of chunks (see Figure 1).
Figure 1: Use HTTP chunked transfer to transmit a video segment in multiple chunks from Video Source / HTTP Origin through CDN to Player
As we can see from Figure 1, the sizes and arrival times of video segment chunks are not deterministic and can be affected by a number of factors including
Sizes of video frames
Timing of frame arrivals from the video source
Real-time behavior of HTTP origin/caching software
Real-time behavior of OS, router, etc.
Network condition
Figure 2: Instantaneous HTTP chunk download speed (blue dots) vs. video bitrate (red dots)
Figure 2 is a plot of the instantaneous HTTP chunk download speed (blue dots) vs. the actual video bitrate (red dots). X-axis is time in seconds and Y-axis is bitrate in mbps. The blue dots are very noisy and scatter below and above the red dots.
Note: The instantaneous HTTP chunk download speed is calculated by chunk size / chunk duration, where the chunk duration is the gap between the arrival times of this and its previous chunk.
Accurate bandwidth estimation is essential for a well-performing ABR playback algorithm. Now, the challenge is how we can identify the download bandwidth from the noisy HTTP-chunk-download-speed samples.
Research Competition:
Twitch and Twitter invite video researchers to develop signal-processing/machine-learning algorithms for bandwidth estimation based on chunk-based download stats.
We provide the training and test dataset. For more details, please download the instructions for the Twitch/Twitter IEEE 2018 Grand Challenge HERE.
Please visit ICME’s page for general information on the IEEE 2018 Grand Challenge. We look forward to receiving your submission and seeing you in San Diego next year!
“Too Tall” is about to ball. That’s right, this week’s Twitch Prime Legend in Madden Ultimate Team is Dallas Cowboy’s DE Ed “Too Tall” Jones, with an 83 OVR!
At a gigantic 6’9 in height, he was basically an NFL Paul Bunyan. Through 1974–1989, he played in 16 playoff games, 3 Super Bowls, 3 Pro Bowls, and has the 3rd most sacks in Cowboys history. He batted down so many passes he convinced the NFL to keep track of it as an official stat.
As if dominating football wasn’t enough, he left the NFL in the prime of his career to become a professional boxer, where he had perfect 6–0 record and five knockouts. Then he was like “uhhh JK, I’m coming back to play football”, and continued to terrorize QB’s for another 9 years.
When you’re that big you can do whatever you want. And that’s why you need Ed “Too Tall” Jones on your Madden team.
