Sony patent reveals new PS5 feature – and it’s good news if you have a big collection of games

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

A newly published patent has sparked rumours about future Sony consoles and backwards compatibility.

As reported by Gearnuke, the patent (via ResetEra) – entitled “remastering by emulation” – was published on 2nd October 2018 by Sony Interactive Entertainment America.

However, if you look at the “filed date” a few lines down, you’ll see the application was initially made on 22nd November 2016.

The full application – which certainly appears to be legitimate – is pretty overwhelming, but it essentially details the live remastering of textures from old games and replacing them “on the fly” with shiny new ones better suited to contemporary resolution displays.

“Each asset such as a texture called for by legacy software such as a legacy computer game software has a unique identifier associated with it,” the patent explains. “The unique identifier can be rendered by imposing a hash on the asset, and then the asset stored with its identifier in a data structure. An artist remasters the textures for presentation on a higher resolution display than envisioned in the original software, and stores them back in the data structure with their identifiers.

“The original software is then played on the higher resolution display, with asset (such as texture) calls being intercepted, identified, and the data structure entered to retrieve the remastered asset having a matching identifier. The remastered asset is then inserted on the fly into the game presentation.”

There’s also information about “audio calls” in the patent. While initially intriguing, a diagram accompanying the application suggests this is the same remastering system as applied to audio files, wherein the game “calls” for audio.

While it certainly sounds like a system for emulating older games for current-gen consoles, we need to take into the account the timing of the application. Would Sony have been thinking about backwards compatibility for a next-gen console back in 2016, or is this more likely the technology the PlayStation 4 currently uses to run PS1 and PS2 titles on PlayStation 4, running under emulation?

PlayStation Trophy Hunter Sets Guinness World Record for Most Platinums

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Guinness World Records has named a PlayStation trophy hunter the record holder for the most Platinum trophies acquired by an individual after he accumulated 1,691 Platinums.

The man in possession of the Guinness World Record is Hakam Karim, better known around the trophy-hunting community by his PlayStation name “Hakoom.” With Guinness World Records awarding him a plaque that confirms he’s the one in possession of the PlayStation record.

From the time that the Guinness World Record certificate was issued to now, Hakoom has actually acquired even more Platinum trophies than what the certificate originally said. According to his PSN Trophy Leaders account, a link that’s proudly listed in his Twitter bio and leads to the trophy-tracking site that shows who’s on top in the trophy race, he has 1,717 Platinum trophies. Given the difficulty of acquiring Platinum trophies in games, that number is dwarfed by the amount of Bronze, Silver, and Gold trophies that he’s earned. His account has a total of 70,120 trophies overall.

But while he’s currently the holder of the record with the staggering number of Platinum trophies, he’s not actually that far ahead of the second-place trophy hunter. Roughdawg4 has 1,711 Platinum trophies, just six behind Hakoom, but Roughdawg4 has nearly 1,000 fewer trophies than Hakoom. It’s the Platinums that matter in this race though, and there’s only a small gap separating the two.

That lofty number of Platinums does raise the question of how Hakoom accumulated so many, a question that he himself addressed in a thread on Reddit that discussed his achievement. While those in trophy-hunting circles will know his name and method, others who weren’t as familiar with him asked questions about how he got so many trophies. According to a video that he shared, Hakoom runs multiple gaming setups at once across different PlayStation systems to earn Platinum trophies quicker. When asked how many hours it took to earn all his trophies, he said that it was the result of 10 years of gaming with 10-20 hours put into the project each day. Commenters within the Reddit post also brought attention to some trophy timestamps that they thought were suspiciously close to each other, but Hakoom denied any accusations of ill-gotten trophies and said that he’s provided proof in the past.

Hakoom holds the record for most Platinum PlayStation trophies for now, though it’s unknown how often such a record will be updated or if he’ll hold that title for long.

Resonance of Fate 4K/HD Edition: Details on the Upcoming Remaster

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Resonance of Fate, originally released in 2010, has been remastered to a 4K/HD Edition. You can now immerse yourself in stunning graphic details while traversing this devastated earth and engaging in acrobatic gun battles. With the 4K resolution, you’ll be able to better experience how the fate of the world has changed, a theme of humanity that may be at their twilight. The acclaimed battle system that lets you take control of layered strategies with dynamic movement.

All this while listening to the fantastic score created by Sakuraba and Kohei Tanaka.

    Resonance of Fate (PS4)

This was a challenging project for us since not only did we remaster it as an HD version, but we fully committed to taking it to 4K resolution. In order to make the pre-rendered movies 4K, we had to utilize ‘deep learning’ our proprietary technology in order to up-rez. We also strived to maintain 60 frames per second at 4K resolution.

We took special care with the textures to improve their quality. Take a look at the hair carefully to get a sense of this. Not only did we make Leane better, but check out Vashyron’s silky locks as well. We also all really enjoyed being able to see the expressions on the characters as they are traversing the environment.

    Resonance of Fate (PS4)

While working on the remaster, it really brought back how atmospheric the original game was, so we really made an effort to retain that by showing how the passage of time affects the backgrounds, fog effects, light sources and shadows, and reworking the camera angles. The stellar quality of the original movies really shine through with the improved resolutions.

Resonance of Fate (PS4)Resonance of Fate (PS4)

We also fixed made sure to fix some old bugs and improved the load times to make for a better game playing experience. It’s a remaster that still has over 100 hours of gameplay with a dynamic engaging battle system that we hope you’ll enjoy. We’ve enjoyed remastering a game that allows players to have their own play style, customization and ingenuity to get through the game.

GTA 6 Delayed Until 2020, Find Out The Real Reason

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Many rumors were assuming that Rockstar Games is no longer working on the development of GTA VI and recently published reports do not have good news. The process will not resume soon.

According to a Neurigadget report, Grand Theft Auto VI will not be released by Rockstar Games until 2020 because numerous reasons are slowing down the process.

GTA V’s standalone mode GTA Online was more successful than anticipated increasing Rockstar Games’ revenue consistently, and it also allowed the company to include more professional developer in the process of creating fresh content,

Why GTA VI can’t be launched sooner?

However, another problem stays behind the main reason why GTA VI’s development is being kept on, and it will probably not be released until 2020.

A huge roadblock is hit by Rockstar as the development of Grand Theft Auto 6 will take a more extended budget than the company thought of. The developer plans to introduce VR support in the game, so the budget of Grand Theft Auto 6 raised to the shocking sum of $500 million.

The previous version of the game has a budget of $250 million, and Rockstar Games wants to double it for the upcoming game. No matter the extended revenue GTA 5 brought to the developer, it still struggles to find resources for the next game.

The Rockstar Games developer got us used with receiving a new GTA game every 5 years which means that we should have received one by the end of 2018. However, as GTA 6 has a massive budget and GTA Online is very successful, you will need to wait two more years before the next release.

It looks like we will need to wait for quite a long period until the next Grand Theft Auto game will become available.

This console generation has begun to wind down as it walks towards its third act. It’s been an eventful couple of years that has seen plenty of ups and downs for all the major manufacturers. Each console has its pros and cons, as well as their adamant loyal followings at this moment.

Still, it has to be said; even though Nintendo recently came out swinging with the runaway success Nintendo Switch and a shellshocked Microsoft is gearing up to make some major moves for the next console cycle—there is very little doubt that Sony and the Playstation 4 have reigned supreme this entire generation.

Recently, the brand has taken some blows with their stance against console cross-play, non-backward compatibility, and their lackluster game streaming service—but one thing you never hear anyone complaining is their actual content. Why? Because they deliver games, games, and more games!

When it comes to serving up exclusive game experiences you can find on your PS console and nowhere else, Sony is your fixer with this generation has only helped cement that notion as concrete. Even as our current gaming generation has a good two peak years left in it, Sony is still busy blazing the big guns with some great exclusives; from Triple-A blockbusters, to quirky indies, to immersive VR experiences.

This list charts every Exclusive PS4 game that is confirmed in the making, plus speculates anything that is a sure-bet possibility of being worked on. Ryosuke Nozawa // Game Designer, tri-Ace

    Resonance of Fate (PS4)

    Resonance of Fate (PS4)

  • The 10 Coolest New Features in Fallout 76

The 10 Coolest New Features in Fallout 76

    Reading Time: 8 minutes

    “War. War never changes.”

While that phrase has been part of Fallout’s lore since the very beginning, the same can’t be said about the Fallout series itself. Each game in the venerable post-apocalyptic RPG series has expanded and improved upon features in the entry before it, to the point that the changing locales (like Washington DC in Fallout 3 and Boston in Fallout 4) often end up playing second fiddle to some major gameplay alterations. This has never been clearer than in the case of Fallout 76, as the upcoming title from Bethesda Game Studios changes thing up in a big way by moving from a wholly single-player campaign to a shared world experience that feels like the radioactively mutated love-child of an MMO and a traditional single-player role-playing game.

At a recent event in West Virginia’s Greenbriar Hotel (a real-world location that’s been painstakingly recreated in the game), I had a chance to spend a couple hours exploring Fallout 76 with some friends. While there’s no doubt that it’s a Fallout game through and through, I was impressed by a number of changes to the core experience that should excite new and old fans alike. Let’s break them down:

    Adopting a Pack Mentality

As I mentioned above, Fallout 76 has a multiplayer element not seen before in the series. From the moment you step out of Vault 76, you’ll be able to squad up with up to four other players to form a group. Once you’re in a group, you can take on quests or break up and explore the world around you. What’s really neat is the fact that you can fast travel to any one of your teammates, even if they’re in an area that you’ve never explored. This means that you can save some time by fast traveling to a friend at a point of interest, which in turn unlocks that point for later fast travel. It costs some caps to fast travel to a location, while it’s free to travel to a squadmate, so this can be a really helpful way to unlock the map without breaking the bank.

    (function($){ $(„iframe“).each(function () { var ifr_source = $(this).attr(’src‘); var qsDelimit = (ifr_source.indexOf(‚?‘) > -1) ? ‚&‘ : ‚?‘; var wmode = qsDelimit+“wmode=opaque“; $(this).attr(’src‘, ifr_source + wmode); }); })(jQuery);

There’s Never Too Much Junk in Your Trunk

If you’re anything like me, you’re a freak who can’t walk through a dilapidated hovel or bombed-out house without picking up everything in sight. We’ve all been there: you pick up a melted doll head off of a skeleton, and all of a sudden you can’t run or jump. Over-encumbrance can be a real issues for hoarders like myself, but Fallout 76 helps mitigate this in a big way by allowing you to break down all of your junk into materials at any workbench you come across. Since all of the game’s workshops (as well as your C.A.M.P.) feature workbenches, there’s a good chance you won’t find yourself constantly lugging around too much junk.  Along the same lines are storage containers, which allow you to access your gear as you explore the world, be it at your C.A.M.P. or at a shared workshop.

It’s (Not) a Small World After All

Fallout 76’s version of post-apocalyptic Appalachia is a whopping four times larger than Fallout 4’s Boston. Anyone who played that title can tell that that means the game world is absolutely huge. And it’s full of a variety of environments, from a verdant copse of trees called, simply, The Forest, to the awful-sounding Toxic Ash Heap. What’s more, Fallout 76 features what the developers are referring to as dungeons, which are standalone areas featuring tough enemies and enticing rewards.

    Death Becomes You

One interesting twist to Fallout 76 comes in the form of the death mechanic. In previous games, dying would send you back to a previous save or force you to reload your game. That isn’t the case here, as you can now choose a teammate or camp to spawn on. What’s more, you’ll lose whatever junk you’re carrying (though keep your weapons and armor), so you’ll need to decide if it’s worth heading back to your carcass to pick up the stuff that you dropped. Since some materials are more scarce that others, sometimes it’s definitely worth the hassle.

    The Tales We Tell

During my time with the game, I battled plenty of enemies that were similar to those in previous Fallout games, including ghouls, a variety of bots, and good old fashioned Super Mutants. This time out, however, there are a bunch of enemies that you haven’t seen before, largely because they are based on regional folklore. You’ll battle monsters like the Mothman, the Beast of Grafton, and more. I can’t wait to confront more of the things that go bump in the night.

Fallout 76 Megasloth InlineFallout 76 Megasloth Inline

    Murder Was the Case

Each Fallout 76 server will support 24 players, so even though the world is massive, you’re bound to run into other people whether you’re grouped up or running solo. While you could leave well enough alone, the devs at Bethesda realize that that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Fallout 76 supports player-vs-player action, meaning you and your pals could attempt to take down anyone they come across. There’s a twist though: if your targets don’t fire back, you’ll do only a small amount of damage. If you do manage to kill them without any reciprocation, you’ll not only be out of luck when it comes to claiming their loot, but will also be marked as a murderer. If you’re a murderer, you’ll be marked on other players’ maps with a bounty, which will be taken from your bank if they hunt you down. To keep experienced player from battle neophytes, PvP won’t unlock until players hit level 5.

    The Story Before The Story

In many ways, Fallout 76 feels like a prequel to a never-before-seen Fallout game. That’s because, unlike Fallout 3 or 4, which took place hundreds of years after the nuclear war, Fallout 76 takes place only a few decades after the end of the world as we know it. This means that you won’t run into any human NPCs, since you and your friends are the first ones out of the vault. Instead, you’ll get quests via environmental storytelling devices like holotapes or collectables. In many ways, this makes Fallout 76 feel almost like a ghost story, since everyone you’re learning about is assuredly dead.

    Live and Uncut

In many ways, the mission and quest structures in Fallout 76 are similar to those in the series’ other games: You’ll get a quest, take down enemies or find items, and get rewarded. One major change to this formula comes in the form of live events, which pop up from time to time and often require a group effort to complete. And it often won’t just be your group, as others on the server will get the notification that something’s going down. In one, my team and a number of others near us took down some rampaging bots, battling our way to a terminal to reprogram them to not target humans. It’s a fun way to keep the action fresh, and might even result in you making some new friends.

    Playing the Cards You’re Dealt

Not surprisingly, Fallout S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system has returned, allowing you to customize your character by distributing points across seven different categories. This time out, however, you’ll earn trading card-based perks that can be slotted into each category. So, for example, you might choose to be able to target individual limbs in the VATS system, or automatically use a healing Stimpak if your health falls below 20%, or slow your hunger or thirst levels (these need to be managed in Fallout 76) while in a camp or workshop. Each card has a numerical value, and you will only be able to slot them if you’ve got enough points left in the corresponding category. Every time you level up, you’ll earn new cards for a variety of categories. As an added bonus, you’ll occasionally earn packs of cards that including a cringe-worthy dad joke!

    The Nuclear Option

My time with Fallout 76 literally ended with a bang. You see, as you and your chums play the game, you can undertake quests that result in finding parts of launch codes. Find enough of them, and you’ll be able to head to a launch center to fire off a nuke wherever on the map you see fit. Want to get revenge on the group that took down your squad earlier? Drop a bomb on them. Want to irritate (and irradiate) some folks at a shared workshop you want to claim for yourself? Send in the nukes.

I wasn’t totally sure what to expect from Fallout 76, but after playing for a few hours, I absolutely can’t wait to play for several hundred more when the game launches on November 14. And I’ll actually get my chance sooner rather than later, since anyone who pre-orders the game on Xbox One will get exclusive early access to the B.E.T.A. that starts on 10/23, with all progress from the beta carrying over to the full release a few weeks later. Finally, I’m also happy to share that Fallout 76 on Xbox One includes 500 Atoms, which allows you to purchase cosmetic in-game items and outfits.

We’ll be sharing more on Fallout 76 between now and the game’s launch on November 14, both as a standalone title or as part of our Fallout 76 Xbox One X bundle, which includes an Xbox One X console and a copy of the game.

  • PlayStation 5 Rumored to Have Backwards Compatibility

PlayStation 5 Rumored to Have Backwards Compatibility

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

It seems like Sony might be taking a page out of Microsoft’s book, with the next gen console rumored to have some form of backwards compatibility.

One of the biggest selling points in the Xbox One’s favor the last few years, has been the impressive amount of work Microsoft has put in to ensure that a large portion of games from their earlier generation consoles will still work today. The backwards compatibility program effectively means that the library of games available grows rapidly over time, as older games are brought back to life for the new generation.

Now it seems that Sony is taking note of that success, with rumors that the next generation PlayStation will also feature backwards compatibility. The news comes via Gearnuke, which discovered a patent registered by Sony Interactive Entertainment America LLC titled ‘Remastering by emulation.’ While this patent was originally private, it was updated earlier this month and seems to point towards Sony’s desire to bring the past into light once again.

“Each asset such as a texture called for by legacy software such as a legacy computer game software has a unique identifier associated with it. The unique identifier can be rendered by imposing a hash on the asset, and then the asset stored with its identifier in a data structure. An artist remasters the textures for presentation on a higher resolution display than envisioned in the original software, and stores them back in the data structure with their identifiers. The original software is then played on the higher resolution display, with asset (such as texture) calls being intercepted, identified, and the data structure entered to retrieve the remastered asset having a matching identifier. The remastered asset is then inserted on the fly into the game presentation.”

This certainly seems to point to backwards compatibility, with older games getting a face-lift before relaunching in the modern age. For more on the PlayStation 5, check out what we know so far, and what else is rumored, here.

PlayStation Announces Cross-Play With Microsoft And Nintendo

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Look out the nearest window for flying pigs, because it seems like Sony has finally come around on PlayStation cross-play, confirming today that PS4 users will soon be able to enjoy Fortnite with other console and mobile gamers.

Sony announced the wonderful news in a recent blog post, claiming that after a lengthy “evaluation process”, the company has “identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content”.

The first step in this wondrous journey begins, fittingly enough, with Fortnite. An open beta launching today will allow for cross-platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems.

Sony explained in their blog post:

We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.

The house of PlayStation have been infamously cagey on cross-play for years now. After snubbing Microsoft’s invite to play together, we’ve had to listen to Sony give us a number of reasons as to why cross-play just isn’t something PS4 gamers want, despite the fact plenty of PS4 gamers have asked for exactly this.

Sony has acknowledged this change in stance as a major policy shift for the company, and one they’ll no doubt be keeping a close eye on to ensure everything runs smoothly.

It’s still not known what other games this new plan will extend to, but we can probably assume Sony are looking to take this one title at a time for just now.

The more paranoid among us might suggest they’ll be looking for a reason to shut it down as soon as they can so they can at least say they tried so just… play nice out there, okay.

PS Now Adds 10 New PS4 Games, 7-Day Trials Reset

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

It’s been about a week since we launched the PS4 game download feature, and we’re adding 10 new PS4 games to the library this month, including Elder Scrolls Online and Sniper Elite 4, bringing the total to over 220 games.

The game download feature gives subscribers the option to download almost all of the 220+ PS4 games in the service to play locally with full audio and visual fidelity and DLC and add-on support (DLC and other add-ons sold separately), including Bloodborne, WWE 2K16, Until Dawn, Project Cars, NBA 2K16, and God of War 3 Remastered. All of the PS2 games in the service are downloadable as well. See here for more information on downloads and transferring save data between the PS Now save cloud and your PS4.

As of this week we have also reset the 7-day trial, so anyone not subscribed to the service as of October 2 can try out downloads for most PS4 games in the service, as well as streaming for all 650+ games in the PS Now library. Even if you previously had a paid subscription or used a 7-day trial for PS Now, you can now access the 7-day trial again to see how easy the new download feature works. The 7-day free trial (credit card required) auto-renews at $19.99 per month at the end of the trial period, unless you cancel or subscribe to a different subscription plan. So now’s the perfect time to come back and give PS Now a try!

Leading this month’s batch of new PS Now games is Elder Scrolls Online, the award-winning MMORPG with an ever-expanding story in a persistent online Elder Scrolls world. Also available new this month is Sniper Elite 4, with an expansive campaign for 1-2 players, co-op for 2-4 players, and competitive multiplayer for up to 12. And with your PS Now subscription, you can stream or download games in the PS Now library (not all games available for download) and play online without a PS Plus subscription. Its predecessor, Sniper Elite 3, is also available for streaming and download as part of the PS Now library.

Other new games this month include the beautiful Bound, acclaimed science-fantasy RPG Torment: Tides of Numenera, and unique titles like Styx: Shards of Darkness and 100ft Robot Golf.

  • No Man’s Sky Vehicle Update Now Live on Xbox One

No Man’s Sky Vehicle Update Now Live on Xbox One

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

    Hello everyone!

Since No Man’s Sky Next launched on Xbox One, the positive response from the community has been overwhelmingly exciting. It has been a real inspiration to the team and fueled us to create a constant stream of hotfixes and new content releases over the last two months.

We’ve launched a regular series of new community missions, taking players deeper into Nada and Polo’s strange adventures aboard the Space Anomaly. A new mission takes place each week, uniting the community with a shared experience on a specific planet.

Taking part in the missions also gives the chance to unlock exciting new rewards – unique base building parts, customization options and more. New collectible rewards are being added to the game each week, so if you’ve missed out on these missions so far this is the perfect time to jump in.

This week’s update is the largest content drop yet, with a focus on Exocraft. We’ve added our first new vehicle since the Pathfinder update: the Pilgrim. A powerful futuristic motorbike allowing players to navigate alien planets at exciting speeds.

No Mans Sky BikeNo Mans Sky Bike

We’ve also enhanced the existing Exocraft with lots of new upgrades and features, making them more essential for explorers across the universe. All vehicles can be raced, and tracks can be shared online. These races have also been improved and expanded, including online racing and streamlined race track building.

Other highlights since the release of No Man’s Sky: Next include:

    • Updates to the Galactic Atlas website, allowing the community to create, navigate and share their own points of interest, discoveries and community hubs all across the galaxy.
    • Terrain tessellation enabled on Xbox One X.
    • Added the ability to customize your player’s body shape.
    • Many new base building parts, customization options, decals and special emotes.
    • Quality of life improvements, including multiplayer permission settings, balance changes, streamlined inventory management, more Refiner recipes, and high-velocity Exosuit Rocket Boots.
