  • TwitchCon 2018 Keynote: Everything You Need to Know

TwitchCon 2018 Keynote: Everything You Need to Know

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

Today we celebrated the streamers and fans that make Twitch unique at Day One of our fourth TwitchCon. We kicked off the morning in San Jose recapping the incredible accomplishments we were all a part of this year and shared our battle plan for how we’re playing support for streamers with new tools designed to help them grow, connect, and thrive.

We also announced the expansion of our esports program, Twitch Rivals, that will more than double in size in 2019 and introduced Twitch Sings, a new category of game built by Twitch with streaming in mind, that will enter closed beta this year.

More people are joining Twitch every day, and once they’re here, they experience what this community has known all along — that together you’ve created something new: Multiplayer Entertainment. You’re not just here for the show; you are the show.

At Twitch, streamers aren’t a sidequest. Making sure creators and their communities are succeeding more than ever is our main goal. Here’s a summary of what we announced today.

    Grow

Whatever you stream, we’re making it easier for creators to get discovered.

    • Squad Stream: Up to four creators will be able to stream together in a single view that viewers discover when they visit any one of their channels. Viewers can watch on desktop and mobile as well as easily follow and subscribe to all channels. Chat is linked to whichever channel a viewer selects as their main view, so they can hang out with their friends or jump over to another community with just a click or a tap. Select streamers will be testing out Squad Stream later this year.
    Squad Stream
    • Highlight Editor updates: Highlight Editor will now allow streamers and editors to stitch together moments from across a video into a single highlight. Look for this update in January.
    Highlight Editor updates
    • New featured sections on the Twitch homepage: Starting later this year we’re rolling out a range of new featured sections like ones highlighting up-and-coming streamers, new Partners and Affiliates, or streamers local to the viewer.
New featured sections on the Twitch homepage

    Connect

We’re giving streamers more tools to build stronger communities and relationships with their viewers. Strong communities spread the word about their favorite streamers, support each other in times of need, and welcome new viewers into the fold. Those relationships are part of what makes Twitch so different.

    • VIP Badges: Streamers will now be able recognize valuable members of their community without requiring them to subscribe or moderate with VIP Badges. VIP members are recognized with a badge and can also chat in slow, sub-only, or follower-only modes. Creators earn 10 badges when they complete the “Build a Community” achievement by reaching 50 followers and 5 unique chatters in a stream and can earn up to 100 badges as their community grows. Look for this in a few weeks.
    VIP Badges
    • New moderator tools in chat: By clicking on someone’s username, mods will be able to see how long that person has been on Twitch and details on their activity in the channel, like chats, number of timeouts, or bans. The update also includes a new comment tool that lets mods work together by leaving notes for each other. These new tools arrive in January.

    • Roles management page: Streamers will able to see and change their community members’ roles– from editors, to mods, to VIP from the new roles section on their dashboard. This is coming alongside VIP Badges in a few weeks.

    • Subscription badges now show total number of months: We heard your feedback loud and clear that subscription badges need to reward consistent supporters, even if they miss a sub one month. Sub badges will now change to show the total number of months a viewer has been subscribed. If a viewer is on an amazing streak, they can still choose to share it when they re-subscribe. This update is coming in January.

    • Extensions: As Extensions continue to grow on Twitch, we’re bringing you more ways to interact by teaming up with brands like Adobe, Tiltify, Spotify, as well as our friends at Amazon.Today at TwitchCon, we showed off Snap Camera, Snap’s brand new standalone desktop app that works with a custom Extension built just for Twitch. Snap Camera lets you use Snapchat’s best Lenses live on your stream with your webcam. With the Snap Camera Extension, viewers can use Snapchat to scan the Snapcode on screen to try on the Lens and streamers can reward subs by activating a custom Lens of the streamer’s choosing when someone subscribes.

We also created custom Lenses for the Twitch community: like a purple, Super Saiyan power-up, for when you take chat’s energy; or a rain of bits to celebrate Cheers. Snap Camera is available now, you can learn more here. To learn more about all the new Extensions that launched at TwitchCon and Developer Day visit the Developer Blog.

    Thrive

To make it easier for streamers to find sponsored opportunities that feel authentic and align with their communities’ interests we’re opening Bounty Board to 30 more brands starting in November. Partners and select affiliates in the U.S. and Canada will be able to use Bounty Board to earn even more, and coming in 2019 and we’ll open it to more affiliates and more countries beginning with the UK.

    Bounty Board

    Twitch Sings

We’re just starting to scratch the surface of what’s possible when everyone wants to play together. There are many games and genres that are made better on Twitch, and we believe there’s an opportunity for a new category of game to emerge that’s made to be streamed, where the audience isn’t a ‘nice to have’ — they’re a crucial part of the game experience.

We knew karaoke would be the perfect place to start. It’s live. It’s always entertaining. And when it really gets going, the line between the crowd and the stage disappears completely.

With Twitch Sings, you can sing your heart out, share your performances across Twitch, or perform duets with your community. And being in the crowd is just as much fun as holding the mic — and just as important. In chat you can request songs, give your favorite streamers crazy challenges to tackle, and when you cheer you will see Bits will rain down on the crowd. We’re testing Twitch Sings on the expo floor at TwitchCon and soon with a handful of streamers live on Twitch in closed beta. We can’t wait to hear what you think and you can go here and register if you’re interested in trying it out. More of you will be invited as space opens up.

  • Happy 18th Birthday to the PS2

Happy 18th Birthday to the PS2

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

The PlayStation 2 is now truly a mature adult. Released at the turn of the century, Sony’s PS2 is to this day the bestselling console of all time. It’s no surprise, either, as the sixth-generation console was still popular for several years after the release of its successor. Sadly, repairs for the PS2 ceased in September 2018, so if you’ve still got one at home, you’ll need to take good care of it in order to ensure it has a healthy adult life.

The PlayStation 2 was announced in the late 90s with a trailer directed by none other than David Lynch, who directed films such as Blue Velvet and Eraserhead, and created the iconic Twin Peaks. You can watch the trailer below, which is infamous for its absurdity.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msMehuZo3x8&w=1101&h=826]

Although Lynch’s ad is commonly referred to in relation to how obscene it is, it actually provides us with the means to examine how wonderful the PS2 was in a truly touching way. You see, the talking duck in the video welcomes the protagonist to “the third place.”

The “third place” is a term that was coined by American sociologist Ray Oldenburg. Oldenburg studied the idea of places in relation to what certain spaces signified. In modern society, people tend to spend the majority of time in isolation at home, which Oldenburg labelled the first place. The second place, then, was the workplace, a sort of home away from home that allowed one to continue inhabiting the first place. However, the third place was perhaps the most important of all. According to Oldenburg, third places “host the regular, voluntary, informal, and happily anticipated gatherings beyond the realms of home and work.”

In the third place, people are free to be themselves; they are not defined by their social status or their position at work. Third places provide people with a neutral ground that provides them with opportunities to connect with others. It is the bond established between people in third places that make up the most meaningful friendships and relationships in the world. By tying this back in with the PlayStation 2, we can see that by welcoming players to the third place, the duck in the ad was actually welcoming them to a place where they would belong.

The PlayStation 2 invited people to play games together, either online or by choosing to play games that offered a couch co-op option. However, that wasn’t all that it invited people to do. From Grand Theft Auto III to Shadow of the Colossus, players were offered opportunities to explore vast virtual worlds that offered them a virtual third space from the comfort of their own homes. It gave people the option to participate in “regular, voluntary, informal, and happily anticipated gathering beyond the realms of home and work” without asking anything more of them than to turn on the console and sit down.

David Lynch is often seen as a visionary, as the iconic filmmaker’s distinctive style has had an effect on the practice of film-making as a whole. It’s important to acknowledge the fact that he really hit home with that PlayStation ad. Although the reference is relatively subtle, it makes all of the absurdity of the video make sense. The man loses his head temporarily, a duck sitting next to what looks like a mummy possesses the faculty of speech for some strange reason; however, the strangeness resembles what the poet Louis MacNeice called “the drunkenness of things being various,” which is a particularly apt way of describing the magical properties imbued in games.

Games are not confined to the kind of logic that defines reality. They offer people stories that can’t be experienced in any other way. In this sense, they’re a truly special kind of third place, where magic exists and things don’t always need to make sense the way they have to at home or at work. These enchanting stories can make players feel all kinds of emotions, while offering them truly unique experiences all the while. The sense of exploration that the medium offers make this third place a place that can be a home within a home that’s theoretically away from the former. It’s at all times tangible, but intangible, as it’s within reach, but never corporeal. This is what makes it a place in which you can truly be yourself without ever having to feel isolated.

Today, October 26, the day on which Red Dead Redemption 2‘s release will dominate the media all over the world, the PlayStation 2 will enjoy a quiet birthday. Having finally become an adult, it can look back at its youth with fond memories, recalling the fact that it offered over 150 million people the opportunity to visit their very own third place whenever they so desired. True, online play has come on in leaps and bounds ever since, but the PlayStation 2 will be remembered for the quintessential role it played in establishing the games industry as we know it today. For that, players should always be grateful.

Check out the first trailer for the Yakuza 4 Remaster on PlayStation 4

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

SEGA has released a new video showing off Yakuza 4 Remastered on PlayStation 4.

Yakuza 4 Remastered is set for release in Japan early next year, and you can take a look at how its coming along.

Protagonist Masayoshi Tanimura has been given a revamp in the game. This is due to Toshiki Masuda taking over the character previously portrayed by Hiroki Narimiya, who retired.

You can see his likeness and hear his voice in the trailer (thanks, Siliconera).

The video is in Japanese, but the sense of drama is still heavy even if you can’t speak the language.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_BJ076uWds]

Remastered versions of Yakuza 4 and Yakuza 5 were announced in May.

The former was originally set to release in Japan this fall, but was pushed to January 17, 2019. Yakuza 5 Remastered is set to release in spring 2019.

At present both games have only been confirmed for Japan, but each will surely head west at some point.

Yakuza 3 Remastered was released on August 9, and once the fifth installment is released, the entire series will be available on PlayStation 4.

  • Is Far Cry 5 the Best Far Cry Game? What’s the Best Far Cry Game?

Is Far Cry 5 the Best Far Cry Game? What’s the Best Far Cry Game?

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Far Cry 5 is the latest game in the infamous Far Cry series. Today, we are going to look at the opinion of gamer’s and reviewers to determine the big question, is Far Cry 5 the best Far Cry game? To determine the best game, we are going to look at the Metacritic score of these games. I am only going off of the PC score of these games on Metacritic and the Far Cry games that are only exclusive to one console aren’t going to be included in this comparison.

In terms of reviewers, the first Far Cry game has the best score out of all other Far Cry games. Far Cry has a score of 89/100 on Metacritic and a user score of 8/10. The game is set on a mysterious tropical island chain. You play as Jack Carver and follow his search for a journalist who went missing. Of course, Far Cry isn’t comparable to Far Cry 5 as it came out a long time ago but, considering that it came out back in 2004, the game is very interesting.

The second game in the infamous Far Cry series is Far Cry 2 with a Metacritic score of 85/100 and a user score of 5.8/10. The player is caught between two rival factions in a war-torn African country. You are sent out to take out The Jackal. The Jackal is a mysterious character who has restarted the conflict between the warlords.

Far Cry 3 is another critically acclaimed Far Cry game. Many players consider it as the best Far Cry game and you can see that from the game’s user score. Far Cry 3 got an 88/100 on Metacritic and an 8.3/10 user score. If you go off of user score, Far Cry 3 is the best game in the Far Cry series. The game’s official description reads, “Jason Brody, a man alone at the edge of the world, stranded on a mysterious tropical island. In this savage paradise where lawlessness and violence are the only sure thing.”

Next up is Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon. Just like Far Cry 3, the game is very popular amongst gamers and reviewers. Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon has an 81/100 on Metacritic and a user score of 8.1/10. Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is a spin-off from Far Cry 3. The game features around eight hours and it comes with an open-world island for players to explore.

Next up is Far Cry 4. Far Cry 4 isn’t very popular amongst gamers as it is with reviewers. Far Cry 4 has an 80/100 on Metacritic and a user score of 6.8/10. The game’s official description reads, “Concealed in the monstrous Himalayas lies a country ingrained in tradition and brutality. You become Ajay Ghale, returning to the country of his birth, this forests and formidable snow-capped summits of Kyrat, to fulfill your mother’s dying wish of spreading her ashes.”

Far Cry Primal features a unique world. Although the game has the same map as Far Cry 4, it feels very different as it is set in the stone age. The game brings many new mechanics to the Far Cry series such as taming animals. You have to survive from enemies and dangerous animals that populate the game’s massive world. Fallout Primal has a score of 74/100 on Metacritic and a user score of 5.2/10. Far Cry Primal has the lowest score out of all other Far Cry games.

The latest Far Cry game is Far Cry 5. Far Cry 5 brings a lot of mechanics from Far Cry Primal to the modern world including animal companions. Far Cry 5 has a 78/100 and a user score of 5.9/10. The game’s official description reads “Welcome to Hope County, Montana. This idyllic location is home to a community of freedom-loving people – and a fanatical doomsday cult known by many as The Project at Eden’s Gate. Led by the charismatic prophet Joseph Seed and his devoted siblings, Eden’s Gate has been surreptitiously infiltrating all aspects of daily life. When your arrival incites the cult to violently assume control of the region, you have to rise up and spark the fires of resistance to liberate the besieged community.”

In terms of user scores, the best Far Cry game is Far Cry 3 and the worst Far Cry game is Far Cry Primal. In terms of reviewer scores, the original Far Cry game has the best score, closely followed by Far Cry 3. So no, Fary Cry 5 isn’t the best Far Cry game.

  • Fallout 76 is Going to Feature More Than 150 Hours of Side Content

Fallout 76 is Going to Feature More Than 150 Hours of Side Content

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Fallout 76 is the next installment in the long-running Fallout series. Fallout 76 is going to be the first online-only Fallout game but, that doesn’t mean Fallout 76 is going to go battle royal and drop the story. Fallout 76, like all other Fallout games, is going to feature a lot of content. So much content that most gamers will most likely not be able to complete the whole game.

Bethesda Game Studios recently did an interview with the Official Xbox Magazine, and they revealed that Fallout 76 is going to feature more than 150 hours of content. Remember, the side content alone will take you more than 150 hours so that combined with the story will take you a very long time. This is good news to fans as this means Fallout 76’s map is going to be densely packed with content even though it’s 4x bigger than Fallout 4’s map. That’s not all, Bethesda has revealed that Fallout 76 has an aggressive post-launch schedule, so you are going to be occupied for a very very long time, even after you finish the main story.

That’s not all, Bethesda’s Development Director Chris Mayer went on to explain that the story is going to be very interesting thanks to the constant threat of getting attacked and possibly killed by monsters and enemy players.

You play this game 30 hours, 300 hours; sometimes you’ll play in a group, sometimes you’ll focus on certain activities but sometimes you’ll play solo. And those are the times when you’ll have time to delve into the fiction and listen to the holotapes and read all the monitors and really get into the story. But there is more of a tension there, you can’t pause the game to read a terminal. When you’re reading a terminal something could sneak up behind you and eat you. And it often does. The more we’ve play-tested, the more we’ve realised how viable that is, and it supports the idea of how dangerous and how lonely it is out there.

  • RUMOR: PlayStation 5 release date as early as 2019

RUMOR: PlayStation 5 release date as early as 2019

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

The PlayStation 5 may drop sooner than expected despite Sony making it clear that it will not arrive until 2021. Recent speculations have suggested that the next-gen console could be released as early as Q4 2019, right on time for the holiday shopping.

Sony is hoping to catch Microsoft off-guard by releasing its newest console early just in time to compete with Microsoft’s next Xbox console, codename Scarlett, according to reports and leaks via T3. The intended release is to be around Christmas 2019, taking advantage not only of its status as the first proper next-gen console but also the hordes of Christmas shoppers looking for their holiday presents.

A truly exciting theory no doubt, and it just got some weight to it after Sony recently posted a new job listingfor a Senior Product Manager with the not so subtle description of owning “the roadmap for next generation PlayStation campaign.” Whichever way you slice it, posting a job for an “entrepreneurial Product Lead” to help lead a “PlayStation campaign” does raise a few eyebrows.

With the speculated Q4 2019 release date still over a year away, Sony certainly has plenty of time to do some marketing. And even if Microsoft catches wind of their plans, they’re probably in no position to reply once Sony makes the first move.

Supporting the theory that Sony has the PlayStation 5 almost ready to roll out is the barrage of rumors regarding its many expected functionalities, chief among them being backwards compatibility, a feature that was highly requested but was never implemented on the PlayStation 4, Comicbook.com reported. Furthermore, rumor has it that the console’s backwards compatibility will not only cover the PlayStation 4 but also the PlayStation 3, all the way to the original PlayStation. Sounds fantastical, though we certainly hope it’s true.

Another purported feature of the new console is V-Sync support, which means programs will run better on the platform allowing for smoother actions and reduced screen tearing. Coupled with a supposed graphical boost, this will cement its place as the first true entry into the next proper console generation.

With the continued adoption of 4K displays into the gaming market, it’s pretty much expected that the PlayStation 5 will fully take advantage of the technology to become the gaming powerhouse that will smoke the current king of consoles, the Xbox One X. Hopefully, the fabled 2019 release does materialize and allow gamers to experience true next-gen experience two years sooner than expected.

This ‘Fallout 76’ PS4 Dualshock Controller Is Made to Look Like Power Armor

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

With the first beta for Fallout 76 wrapped up on Xbox One, the Wasteland is once again on everyone’s minds before the online game’s release next month. To get into the spirit, one custom controller shop decided to give their own Fallout nod with an incredible DualShock 4 controller for the PlayStation:

Seeing the detailing in the above controller is amazing. Though simplistic at first glance, the texture of the shell is made up to replicate that of the iconic Power Armor suits known within the franchise. With the Vault Tec simple at the top and the coils framing it, this is definitely a controller worth of the Wasteland.

  • Be Very Careful if You’re Changing Your PSN Username

Be Very Careful if You’re Changing Your PSN Username

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Sony’s been sending out beta codes for the new PlayStation 4 firmware update which allows you to change your username. There are a few disclaimers before you go ahead, though, and they’re freakin’ terrifying to say the least. The platform holder warns that you “may” lose access to content you’ve purchased for games, like add-ons and virtual currency. It also warns of potential lost progress, leaderboard data, and progress towards Trophies.

There are a few things worth pointing out here: this is a disclaimer, and it’s the company effectively covering its ass should anything go wrong. Remember, we are in beta territory, so the organisation’s going to want to know about any hiccups and bugs. From what we’ve seen online and around social media, those brave souls who’ve changed their names haven’t had too much trouble yet, so the warning is potentially scarier than the reality.

It’s also worth pointing out that there’s no mention of you having to wholesale “give up” access to any games, saves, or Trophies prior to the PS4, as one “insider” claimed ahead of this all being announced. The language is very clear that this “may” affect in-game currency (like FIFA Points, for example) or progress “towards” particular Trophies, but you’re not going to lose access to titles that you’ve purchased or suddenly have trinkets wiped from your account.

Still, we commend the brave souls going through with this. Godspeed to you all!

  • The PlayStation 5 Will ‘Most Definitely’ Have These 5 Features

The PlayStation 5 Will ‘Most Definitely’ Have These 5 Features

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Not much is known about the PS5 yet, but we do know that Sony is currently working on a next-gen console, which would likely be called the PS5, which should arrive in the next few years. However, some abstract details about the upcoming Sony’s system have surfaced on the internet. So, without wasting any more time, here are five features that the PS5 will have.

    1. Backwards Compatibility

A recent patent by Sony suggested that PS5 is going to be backwards compatible with not only PS4 but with PS3, PS2 and The Original PS1

    2. Big Changes To PSN

There will big changes to PSN, in terms of downloading speeds and most likely, finally allowing for name changes.

    3. V-Sync

PS5 will come with V-Sync Support. Games will run better, with a smoother combat and less tearing of screen. This is possible because of V-Sync’s capability of syncing your Games’ frame rate to your display’s refresh rate. So if you are playing a 60 FPS game on 60Hz screen, V-Sync is going to intercept the frequencies and make sure that the game never crosses 60FPS while running which will avoid tearing and other issues.

    4. Universal Crossplay

This is finally happening, although it’s only available in beta and supports just a single game. However, this seems to be a big move for our next generation.

    5. Improved Graphics and New BD-XL Discs

It’s still unclear what sort of a graphical boost will we get to see but rumours hint that the future games will boast some uncanny realism, something that we are already starting to see in this generation. This will also include new BD-XL discs, scheduled to release next month that can store up to 128 GB of data.

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Samsung is working on a batch of new smartphones, including a gaming device, reported Softpedia News.

The report stated that a gaming smartphone is already in the works at Samsung, and will be the “PlayStation” of smartphones.

It is suggested that Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones will be used as a base for the device, which will then be optimised for gaming.

This will mean more storage and a bigger battery than current reference devices. The display will also be key, as games require fast refresh rates and sharp visuals.

The news comes after Huawei recently launched its Mate 20 X, which the company said can take on the Nintendo Switch as a gaming platform.

  • GTA 6: Is the Installment Taking Inspiration from Narcos?

GTA 6: Is the Installment Taking Inspiration from Narcos?

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

“GTA 6” remains one of the most anticipated installments in the gaming market today as its predecessor proved to be quite the hit for players around the world. Indeed, “GTA 5” has reportedly brought in over $6 billion in revenue for Rockstar Games and is still generating profit five years after its release, Billionaire365 reported.

As such, the studio is still allocating resources in order to create more content for “GTA 5” to keep its player base interested. And this is one of the reasons why “GTA 6” isn’t coming out soon. Another reason is the fact that “Red Dead Redemption 2” is slated for release this Oct. 26.

Rockstar Games doesn’t want their products to compete against each other by releasing them at relatively proximal times. It goes without saying that gamers only have so much time on their hands, even for those who consider themselves hardcore players. And with “Red Dead Redemption 2” and “GTA 6” having such vast maps to explore, gamers will have no choice but choose one over the other.

What’s more, there are other triple-A franchises out there that are equally beloved by the gaming community. “Spider-Man,” “Shadow of the Tomb Raider,” and “Darksiders III” are just some of the games that are receiving heavy interest from players. So it makes much sense for Rockstar Games to push “GTA 6” to a later date in order to lessen the competition with “Red Dead Redemption 2.”

So when exactly is “GTA 6” coming out? Nothing has been confirmed by the gaming studio just yet but it’s heavily speculated that it will drop sometime between 2020 and 2022. And with Rockstar Games having a reputation for taking their time in developing their products, this might very well be the case.

There’s also the fact that a new generation of consoles is being created by companies to compete with the specs of the PC. For instance, Sony recently confirmed that they’re currently developing the PlayStation 5, which is slated for release in 2021 at the soonest. This announcement definitely has some impact on the development of “GTA 6” since RockStar Games will undoubtedly want their product to run smoothly in this upcoming system.

Although “GTA 6” will not be dropping anytime soon, it seems that the gaming studio is already making progress regarding the next installment of this franchise. As rumors would have it, “GTA 6” is being developed by Rockstar Games under the codename “Project Americas.”

The reason behind the moniker is that players can allegedly travel from the U.S. to South America in order to complete certain missions in “GTA 6.” While no confirmation has been made by the company, rumors are saying that the game will take some inspiration from shows like “Narcos” and movies like “Made in America.” This makes sense since both these works involve the drug trade in their plotlines, which is also something that’s been a staple for the “GTA” franchise since day one.

  • GTA5 Cheaters Could Instantly Kill You – Even While You’re In Single-Player

GTA5 Cheaters Could Instantly Kill You – Even While You’re In Single-Player

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

GTA Online has its share of cheats and mods, and they can be a big problem for online players. But a new mod menu went several steps further, allowing nefarious players to get administrative access to servers to spawn vehicles or even instantly kill you – even while you’re in single-player.

The exploit has since been patched, but for the brief window it was open it served as one of the most alarming cheats we’ve seen in ages. Before the patch, a mod menu was able to access an admin feature intended to allow Rockstar devs to get creative during streams. That feature allows you to kick players from servers, spawn vehicles, initiate ragdoll, or instantly kill players.

Most disconcertingly, hackers didn’t even have to be part of your game session to mess with you. Anybody with your Rockstar Social Club ID could drop jets on your head or repeatedly kill you, as happened to speedrunner FriendlyBaron. That applies even in single-player, unless you take extra steps to block all of GTA5’s online features.

According to prominent members of the Rockstar community, the exploit has existed for ages, but this is the first time it had been publicly released. It’s also apparently gotten patched shortly after access to the cheat became widespread.

Rockstar and Take-Two have gotten increasingly aggressive about stamping out cheats, repeatedly taking legal action against the makers of exploitive mods like Infamous. It’s often come at the expense of proper mod support for solo players, though. Either way, this will hopefully be the last opportunity for online cheaters to affect solo GTA players.

  • It’s probably time for these PlayStation usernames to go

It’s probably time for these PlayStation usernames to go

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Earlier this month, Sony announced a long-awaited feature for its gaming systems: For the first time, players can change their PlayStation Network Online IDs. A beta version of the feature can be tested on the PlayStation Preview Program until the end of November, and the full rollout is set for early 2019.

There are some caveats. For instance, even though the first name change is free, each subsequent change will cost $4.99 for PS Plus subscribers, and $9.99 for anyone else. In addition, Sony says that though the service is compatible with PlayStation 4 games published after April 1, 2018, and a “large majority” of popular games released prior, users may still “occasionally encounter issues or errors” on earlier PS4 games, or earlier PlayStation systems.

Nevertheless, PlayStation fans have generally expressed excitement for the feature, with many noting that they’ve been waiting forever for it. While other gaming systems like Microsoft’s Xbox have allowed username changes over the years, Sony has taken more than a decade to address the issue, despite user requests. Now, finally, PlayStation owners can get rid of the embarrassing names—like “XxX_BluntMaster69_XxX”—that they came up with when they were 14 years old.

Many of us had cringe-worthy first email addresses we created as young teens, only to regret it much later; PlayStation IDs are much the same. Sony—at least some employee at the company—knew this was the case, too. Last week (Oct. 10) PlayStation UK’s Twitter account cheekily @’d one user with a message that it was now possible to change their bad username.

That said, nostalgia runs deep, and for some, letting go of a decision made over a decade ago can be hard.

Still, there are plenty of IDs that everyone would agree have not aged well. Consider the many Bill Crosby-related usernames out there. This year, a Pennsylvania court found Cosby guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault, classified the former actor and comedian as a sexually violent predator, and sentenced him up to 10 years in prison. In 2018, no one wants to be known as “supercosbyfan69.”

Kyle Orland, senior games editor at Ars Technica, posted a Twitter thread of examples of embarrassing names out there. As Orland notes, it’s hard to be taken seriously in Killzone’s multiplayer mode with a name like “MileyFan1998.” Some other gems include: “69_sex_liker_420,” “FlyLikeAG666,” “VapeLord2000,” and “Passive_Menis.”

PlayStation users can still choose any name they want, no matter how hilarious, off-kilter, or lewd it might seem—except if it’s already taken.

As for those usernames that get shunted to the side when users take advantage of the new feature—well, PlayStation could get creative. One Twitter account that bills itself as “a parody based on the legendary British Game Designer” Peter Molyneux, suggested that PlayStation vide- game developers could incorporate these “retired” old names as narrative tool.

Goodbye, all the names that are about to go. RIP.

Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 6 Delays Along with Release Date

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

We assume Rockstar Games are too busy with Red Dead Redemption 2 release to work on Grand Theft Auto 6. Red Dead Redemption 2 was announced in October 2016 and has taken an extra two years to finally come out. Rockstar said that the game required more polish and fixing, but some analysts believe that the game’s online mode was creating some problems as well.

Since Grand Theft Auto 5 was a huge success when it was launched, even got into some Guinness World Records, the Rockstar Company cannot just stop here.

Doug Creutz, industry analyst reported that the game made so much money that passed any media title in history.

“I think it’s a wild outlier. I think maybe with the exception something Nintendo has made—Mario Brothers—but aside from that there’s never been a console game that’s sold so many units,” Creutz said for MarketWatch in April.

Evan Wingren, the KeyBanc analyst even said that video games are much more profitable than movies due to their interactive system, attracting the costumers.

The Grand Theft Auto games are too popular and bring too much money not to be continued. But it is possible that if Red Dead Redemption 2 will face a big success, that the Rockstar Games would get Grand Theft Auto 6 out of the plan. But why will they do that knowing the number of fans the game has and also the company can benefit from both games. In any case, fans will have to wait until 2020 or 2021 for GTA 6 to come out.

“And I believe that Red Dead Redemption 2 will shatter expectations and that the online experience also will be extraordinary, but unexpected. And my view is that all great hits are, by their very nature, unexpected.” Strauss Zelnick, the Take-Two’s CEO reported.”

PS4 System Update 6.02 Out Now, Here’s What It Does

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

We hope you’re ready for minor system performance enhancements, because Sony has released a new PS4 firmware patch. Beyond the generic, single patch note, it’s unclear precisely what this update, version 6.02 does. Either way, the update is available now.

The patch weighs in at 447.4 MB, and it’s a mandatory download. Sony states the update “improves system performance,” but it’s possible this patch is the one that fixes a recent issue that caused many PS4s to enter a crash loop.

That bug allowed malicious users to send a message containing special characters that would crash your PS4. Sony has since stated the issue has been fixed, and advised anyone still affected to delete the malicious message via the PSN app.

Looking ahead, PS4 users will soon be able to change their online IDs after many years of being stuck with the same old tag. That facility is coming in early 2019 after a beta test this year.

  • Call of Duty PlayStation 5 game could be coming 2019

Call of Duty PlayStation 5 game could be coming 2019

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Call of Duty Black Ops IIII may have only just released, but already people are looking to next year’s game – and the Infinity Ward-made game may be targeting a next-gen release.

According to the latest job listing by Infinity Ward, Call of Duty 2019 seems to be targeting the PS5 and the Xbox Scarlett.

Infinity Ward has posted a job listing on LinkedIn which specifically states it’s looking for staff for an ‘unannounced next-gen title’.

“Come work with the game industry’s brightest on an exciting, unannounced next-gen title,” the listing proclaims. “The candidate must have a strong interest and passion for First Person Shooter (FPS) games.”

It’s highly unlikely that the game is the Call of Duty for after 2019 – Infinity Ward’s next game will be Activision’s 2022 Call of duty title, and it’s unlikely the developer will be hiring for a game that far away.

Infinity Ward – who is known for the Modern Warfare part of the CoD canon – is one of the most well-regarded developers in the industry, and it’d be interesting to see if they’ve got anything else up their sleeves.

As it happens, CoD is very much the team’s wheelhouse, and it’s unlikely this project will be anything else.

So that begs the question… will we be seeing the start of the next-gen next year?

Not necessarily. Infinity War bought us Call of Duty: Ghosts, which was a cross-gen title.

That means it released first on Xbox 360 and PS3, then on Xbox One and PS4. We could see CoD 2019 launch on this gen first, but with the developer making a version that will also run on next-gen hardware, making it one of the earliest cross-gen titles out there.

Other suggestions for next-gen or cross-gen games are Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima from Sony, and maybe Fable from Microsoft.

You can expect to hear more about the next CoD in May 2019, if previous reveal timings are anything to go by.

Sega Fans Are Finally Getting an HD Retro Remake

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Retro gaming has become more and more exciting as of late thanks to the rereleases of classic gaming systems NES and SNES Classic.

Now, Analogue has announced that it’ll be releasing the Mega Sg, a $190 console that’ll play classic Sega Genesis, Sega Master System and Sega Mega Drive games in high definition. Slated to release in April 2019, the console will upscale all your favorite classic games growing up to look great in 1080p and sound great with 48KHz 16-bit stereo.

Unfortunately, the Mega Sg won’t be shipping with any controllers, so you’ll have to pay an extra $25 for one unless you have your old school controllers. Games won’t come built-in either, which means that you’ll have to buy separately. But it also means that you’re not limited to 20 or 30 games that are pre-installed in many of the smaller and cheaper classic consoles. Additionally, Analogue says that theMega Sg will be compatible with over 2,180 games.

The Mega Sg is available for pre-order for $190, and comes in four different colorways: white, gray and two black models with different accent colors.
