  • War Remains Transports Audiences to the Hellish Landscape of the First World War

War Remains Transports Audiences to the Hellish Landscape of the First World War

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

War Remains, which premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and later opened for a limited run in Austin, Texas, is now available to experience at home, including on HTC VIVE. War Remains transports viewers to one of history’s bloodiest battlefields: The Western Front of the First World War. We interview Ethan Stearns of MWM Interactive and Alessandro Kitchener of Flight School Studio on how they created this audacious and unforgettable undertaking.

Each time you put on a VR headset, you are transported to another world. What if you were able to go back in time and experience a moment in history?

Now available on HTC VIVE, “War Remains” is what creators call an “immersive memory.” Podcast legend Dan Carlin, MWM Interactive, and Flight School Studio have created an experience that lets viewers witness the Battle of Passchendaele on the Western Front of the First World War in full color and sound.

The view from the trenches in War Remains.

As educational as it is exhilarating, the piece blends Dan Carlin’s classic narrative style with moments of unfettered combat to bring audiences closer to history than ever before.

Podcast legend and narrator of War Remains, Dan Carlin.

The VIVE team recently connected with Ethan Stearns of MWM Interactive and Alessandro Kitchener of Flight School Studio on how they created this audacious undertaking.

Why did you choose HTC VIVE as a platform to release War Remains?
Stearns: Our goal is to bring these experiences to as many people as possible. Viveport provides a great vehicle to distribute War Remains to the VR community around the world.

Kitchener: In particular, the Vive Pro with wireless technology offers high graphical fidelity, powerful audio and allows us to create a completely immersive experience for War Remains.

What was it like developing the visuals for this experience, and did you reference any historical source material?
Kitchener: Typically, at Flight School Studio, we design our assets from concept art that’s imagined and not truly rooted in reality. It was an interesting change in our workflow to work completely from historical references and even using Dan Carlin himself as a resource for historical accuracy.

All of our props, character designs and environment development were based on historical references to make War Remains feel as real as possible. The only aspect of the project where this wasn’t possible were certain visual effects like period-accurate mustard gas and flares, which had to be extrapolated from eye witness accounts or completely invented because the footage of it simply doesn’t exist. Without a foot solidly in reality, the experience wouldn’t work at all.

How did you design the experience so that the audience feels completely immersed?
Stearns: We set out to make an experience that engages the senses, particularly sound, so that audiences feel truly in this moment. Guided by Dan Carlin’s iconic voice, they hear the destruction and see a battle unfold right before their eyes.

VR has the power to make people feel present in a synthesized moment and bring them closer to the story. If War Remains can help people feel that moment of presence in the trenches, and if it can help them better understand what people went through in the First World War, we’ll consider ourselves successful.

Kitchener: With the goal of full immersion into a specific time and place, historical accuracy of the props and terrible conditions people experienced in these trenches was paramount. From an environment design standpoint, we strived to create the sense that you have been dropped into the middle of a lived-in trench surrounded by war immediately going on around you. Soldiers are yelling, bombs explode in every direction, guns are firing to your left, to your right, and even behind you. This sense of chaos creates a more realistic sense of these battles and makes the user feel like they are in the thick of it, rather than watching a series of scripted vignettes, directly in front of the camera.

War Remains is now available to experience on Viveport Infinity. Order War Remains here.

  • Explore Protected Paleolithic Caves – Only in VR

Explore Protected Paleolithic Caves – Only in VR

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Nominated for Best Documentary Experience at Raindance Immersive and narrated by Geraldine Chaplin, Memoria: Stories of La Garma is an interactive VR documentary that explores the memories trapped inside the cave of La Garma in Santander, Spain. Untouched until its discovery in 1995, you’ll unleash the stories of the humans who took shelter in the cave over 16,000 years ago.

Exclusive to Viveport Infinity, Memoria offers the unique chance to explore this archeological site that was captured with millimetric precision using laser scanners and photogrammetry. We recently had the chance to speak with Rafael Pavon, Director of Memoria: Stories of La Garma and Roberto Ontañon Peredo, Director, Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology of Cantabria. Check out our interview below:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQRHxBVlfNA]

To start, can you tell us the history of La Garma and why it’s so unique?

Buried deep into the hills of Spain’s northern Cantabria region, is the largely undiscovered, historical treasure – La Garma cave complex, included in the World Heritage list and supported by the World Monuments Fund. A time-capsule and Pandora’s box that has escaped human interference for nearly 16,500 years due to a landslide that sealed the cave, resulting in a treasure trove of over 80,000 intact remains, skeletons, artifacts and some of man’s earliest rock art from the Paleolithic era.

Most of the recent discoveries inside the cave aren’t even on Wikipedia yet. The rock art in La Garma makes up one of the best archaeological sequences in Europe, with evidence of human activity spanning over 380,000 years, up until the Middle Ages. Despite the relatively recent discovery of La Garma cave system in the early 90s, its sensitive ecosystem means that only 50 visitors have ever been granted access.

It’s interesting only 50 people have been able to physically go into the caves. Is it closed to the public generally?

La Garma is the name of a limestone hill intensively hollowed out by water during millions of years, forming a karstic system with ten caves that interconnect inside. The Sancta Sanctorum of the cave system is what we called the Lower Galley, a cave 300 m long whose entrance collapsed 16,000 years ago, only accessible today by entering a narrow and passage and descending two chasms.

The access is difficult and dangerous, and this explains one of the main risks involved in visiting the cave. The other one is the extraordinary wealth of the cave, with thousands of remains of human activity from the Upper Paleolithic lying on the floor, in plain sight, and on the walls and the ceilings (cave art, with painting and engravings), miraculously preserved in a delicate environment which can be easily damaged by the entrance of daylight or even by a tiny alteration in the subterranean ambiance, including those induced by human presence. It is because of those two reasons that the cave is close to the public generally.

What did archeologists and researchers discover – did they find something new?

We have been working at the archaeological zone since 1995 and we have discovered lots of things due to its incredible richness. La Garma is like an archive of the European Prehistory, from the first human occupation of the region in the Ancient Palaeolithic (pre Neanderthals) to the middle Ages. The archaeological sequence is amazing, and so they are the assemblages corresponding to each period. But the most astonishing place is the Lower Galley, in which, as I’ve just told, a camp from the Middle-Magdalenian period has been preserved intact as it was abandoned 16,500 years ago before the entrance of the cave collapsed.

We have found here not only thousands and thousands of implements, broken bones and seashells, but also a striking set of decorated objects as well as five habitat structures (like huts) made with stones, wood and furs (one, of a cave lion), and a wonderful ensemble of Palaeolithic cave art constituted by more than 400 graphic units, including geometric signs and hand stencils, and beautiful depictions of animals like horses, bison, aurochs, ibex, deer and other species. In this complex panorama, the VR has helped in our research, as it allowed us “to be” in certain places that we cannot reach and see things that are invisible in the cave.

The last and exciting discovery is a burial site from the Visigoth period (VII-VIII centuries) located in the innermost sector of the cave system, beside a subterranean river.

Why did you turn to VR to tell this story to the public?

Due to the need to preserve the cave and its complicated access, opening the real cave to the public was never a possibility. The locals have always wanted to see it and even demanded the government to open it various times, unsuccessfully. This craving was natural, as some of the most overwhelming stories from our past are still alive inside the cave. Still, it caused an unsolvable problem: How can you allow people to experience the cave in a safe, non-invasive and sustainable manner? After more than 20 years, the solution came through virtual reality. This new medium allowed us to replicate the cave in a millimetric precision and amplify it by adding a layer of emotional storytelling and interaction to it, thus breaking the physical limitations and finally opening the cave, not just to the locals, but to the whole world. No other medium has that power.

Has VR played a role in researching the cave?

From the beginning, our aim was to be so precise in our approach that, not only users would connect emotionally with the cave, but even the archaeologists could use it to explore it without having to go inside the cave every day. We were very aware that this approach was very ambitious, but we remained strict with this. The first time the archaeologists explored the model of the cave in VR, they spent hours exploring all the details, looking at things from different perspectives, and even discovered a new human footprint they haven’t seen in the cave in 24 years.

What are some of the discovered objects that users will be able to examine at home?

The experience explores three of the spaces of the cave, with different elements in each area. One of the most extraordinary memories is the ghost of an old cave lion who went to die at La Garma. The bones are in an inaccessible place of the cave, but in the experience, we could see the lion entering the cave and even looking at us in his lasts moments. Users will also be able to examine different carved bones and artifacts left before the collapse and see how different paintings were made. Notably, one of the most surprising discoveries of La Garma: a corrected drawing where someone corrected the perspective of antlers fifteen thousand years after the original painting.

Want to explore the cave and its memories yourself? Memoria: Stories of La Garma is now part of your Viveport Infinity library. Play now.

Most Played Titles in Infinity – 2019

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

2019 was a milestone year for Viveport! With the mission of democratizing VR content, we pushed to give more access to more content for more people.

In April, we launched Viveport Infinity. The world’s first VR subscription service, we upgraded our model to give members unlimited access to all titles in our Infinity library. With Infinity, you now have the ability to explore hundreds of games, apps and videos in the quest to discover your favorite VR content.

Next, we opened up Infinity to major PC VR devices. Oculus Rift S, Windows Mixed Reality, and Valve Index devices all gained official support this year. In addition, Oculus Quest owners can now access the service through the Oculus Link beta program.

But the engine of our success this year can all be attributed to our developer partners and their amazing content. We added over 100 titles to the Infinity catalog in 2019! To celebrate such a banner year, here are the most played Infinity titles of 2019:

At Viveport, our passion is VR. Here are some of our own favorite titles to play that launched this year in Viveport Infinity:

     –

I Expect You To Die by Shell Games (Launched in Viveport Infinity April 2019)

“The secret to the game’s success is the brilliant fluid VR design and super thoughtful and accessible controls. The simple and non-intrusive control design is difficult to pull off, but this is where IEYTD excels. Even a VR novice will have no issues getting immersed in the clever puzzles, as the real world fades away while you play.” – Bjorn Book-Larsson, VP and Head of Viveport

    Synth Riders by Kluge Strategic

“This is definitely my favorite music game in Infinity. Cruising along a neon highway and matched to an awesome synth-wave soundtrack, you hit targets and glide along waves. There are quite a few tracks by some of the greatest synth artists out there making it easy to get lost for a couple hours at a time.” – Ryan Goddard, Viveport Community

    Ninja Legends by Coinflip Studios

“I love the arcade combat and intensity of ‘Ninja Legends’. It’s very satisfying to take down the unrelenting forces of ninja enemies and pull it off without taking a single hit. It made me feel a bit like Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. There’s plenty to keep you playing with a good variety of stages, settings and difficulties to choose from.” – Angela Song, Viveport Marketing

Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted by Steel Wool Studios

“One of the world’s most recognized gaming IPs finally came to VR and in a terrific (terrifying) collection. I’m amazed by the amount of content that is available in ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted’. There are scenes and levels from 5 of the classic titles as well as original mini-games with the killer animatronics like Freddy and Foxy. A great option for Grandpa’s first time in VR if you are a nice grandson like me.” – Thomas Gratz, Viveport Marketing

Rest in Pieces by Storming Tech

“I really like Rest in Pieces. Very solid wave shooter with great progression, weapons, enemy design and levels.” – Alex Eriksen, Viveport Content
