Epic puts enormous effort into building great technology and content for the Oculus Rift and Gear VR.  We believe that the VR revolution currently underway will open up unprecedented opportunities for game developers, filmmakers, and other creative folks.

Since making Unreal Engine 4 available for free earlier this year at GDC, a million new developers have chosen Unreal, and they’re creating some amazing VR experiences.

In order to explore and demonstrate the possibilities of this new medium, we’ve built a series of leading-edge demos over the past 18 months.  Couch Knights showed the capabilities of the DK2, and then Showdown took advantage of CB1’s head tracking to immerse the viewer in a slow-motion action movie scene.

And now, it’s time for something new. Using the Oculus Touch controller for locomotion, we’ve built a world-scale VR gunfight experience with gameplay that weaves in and out of bullet time. Presenting: Bullet Train.

  • Final Oculus Rift Will Need An $800usd Gaming PC!

Final Oculus Rift Will Need An $800usd Gaming PC!

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

In just under a year, we going to be breaking our piggybanks and draining our savings as the era of VR is finally coming to our desktop PC and PlayStation 4 in 2016, but it is going to be costly setup, even tho the final Oculus Rift most likely will be in the under $300 range, you will need to back it up with at least $800 of new hardware for the barebones of a gaming PC rig to be even able to use it.

IS YOUR PC READY FOR OCULUS RIFT?!

Oculus says these are the recommended specs „for the full Rift experience“:

    • NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
    • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
    • 8GB+ RAM
    • Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
    • 2x USB 3.0 ports
    • Windows 7 SP1 or newer

Honestly, that’s not too bad – considering that Oculus also just revealed that the final Rift needs to push 400 million pixels per second. With two displays inside running at a combined resolution of 2160 x 1200, refreshing 90 times per second, plus some additional headroom (so you can move your head around without seeing things that haven’t loaded yet), Oculus says the Rift requires approximately three times the GPU performance you normally need to play games at 1080p.

But that means you’ll be paying quite a bit if you want to jump in. I just whipped together a quick PC system build at PCPartPicker with some of the cheapest (yet tried and true) components you can get, and it added up to just over $US800 after discounts and rebates.

Yeah, yeah, these are Oculus‘ recommended specs, not absolute requirements, so you could probably go cheaper if needed. (Also, prices may come down by the time the Rift ships.) But remember that virtual reality has way less wiggle room for performance to dip. If a traditional video game drops under a certain amount of frames per second, oh well. If a VR experience drops frames, it can totally destroy the illusion or even make you sick.

We have seen the future of gaming, and it may include holodecks. Northrop Grumman’s VIPE (Virtual Immersive Portable Environment) is essentially a portable room in which soldiers can use to run any number of simulated missions – diplomatic, combat, and even medical training environments, etc. That’s not all, uniforms and compatible weapons need are brought in from the outside to make the experience even more realistic.

  • The Forest Trailer 2 released – Ocolus Rift VR Game

The Forest Trailer 2 released – Ocolus Rift VR Game

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

When we first saw open-world survival horror The Forest in May, it was only the player’s first few days on an island over-run by mutant cannibals. Today a new trailer returns to the island, after the player’s had time to build a home and craft weapons. Send in the mutants!

You see, the game begins with a plane crash on a mysterious island, which pleasingly simulates things like tides and plants dying. Players will need to eke out a living from the land, crafting, building, and avoiding those awful things lurking in the woods.

More importantly, this trailer suggests bird will settle on your outstretched finger.

An alpha version is due later this year on PC, with Oculus Rift support to put the scares right in your face. It’s made by Endlight Games, which was formerly SKS Games.

  • Oculus Rift coming to Android

    Oculus Rift coming to Android

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

What a surprise we have here! It seems that the Oculus Rift is not going only to have a 4K version but also a specially designed one for Android devices. The mobile version will be lighter, and will use the connected mobile device’s processor to function.

    icon_xl (3)
This Android compatible version of the headset is intended to be released simultaneously with the PC version, which is expected in 2014. As of now, there are no plans for an iOS version.

    According to Venturebeat:

Virtual reality meets today’s mobile reality.

Oculus VR announced that it’s bringing its virtual-reality headset, the Oculus Rift, to mobile gaming. Chief executive officer Brendan Iribe divulged the surprising move during his keynote chat Tuesday morning at the GamesBeat 2013 video game conference.

The goal is to have the mobile version launch simultaneously — or as close as possible to — when the PC headset launches.

The mobile Rift headset is for Android devices — iOS is problematic, and the company has not mentioned any plans for an iOS-compatible version.

This device will be a lighter, consumer version, and it will use the mobile device’s processor.

“We have some exciting plans on the mobile VR side as the PC VR side,” Iribe said. “We’re really looking at hitting the consumer market. We’re very excited about what we’re seeing. Skeptical about how good mobile VR could be on such a small platform. It’s pretty incredible what [John Carmack has] been able to do.”

    The Virtualizer

The Virtualizer is a locomotion device with integrated sensors for motion detection. With this device you can move, run, jump, crouch, strafe in your favourite games. This is the next step to virtual reality. Virtual Sports, Virtual Sight-seeing, Virtual meetings, Virtual Social Networks, Virtual Gaming, Virtual Education and Training,…. there are no limits.

    Virtualizer Proto2neu2 Virtualizer Proto2neu

The Virtualizer enables walking as well as running forwards, backwards and sidewards. This can be done in all directions, because there is no preferred direction at all. Furthermore the device enables you to turn around, to jump and to crouch. In combination with a usual controller of a game console (like Wiimote or Razor-Hydra) and an adequate device for video output (like the Oculus-Rift, which allows 3D output and headtracking) the Virtualizer makes you feel the game in a much more realistic way. Instead of controlling the character on a monitor by keyboard and mouse, you feel like you were in the game because of the natural motion of your body.

The Virtualizer uses the principle of low friction to enable motion. We have created a surface, through carefully selected materials, that allows your feet to effortlessly glide back without being too slippery.

The advantage of this principle is the easy and in relation to existing systems, which use complex systems of conveyor bands or very large hallow spheres, cheap production of the devices. This allows us to offer a well working virtual reality device for a price, which is affordable for as much computer users as possible. We don’t only want the Virtualizer to be seen in Institutes for Informatics, but in the living rooms of this world.
