Infinity War Coming to Marvel’s Spider-Man on Sept 7

    fbadvertisment

Hey everyone, It’s been an amazing three weeks since we announced the release date of Marvel’s Spider-Man, coming September 7th, 2018. Your feedback to our release date, collector’s edition, and Game Informer cover story has been tremendous and humbling. Thank you all so much for your support and the kind words on social media!     .

When we announced the release date, we revealed our pre-order bonus, which includes a Spidey Suit pack containing three suits. But we only showed one suit – Spider-Punk – with the other two being held back to be unveiled later.

Here’s an updated look at the pre-order video, with the second suit revealed:

That’s right! Players who pre-order Marvel’s Spider-Man will get an early unlock of the Iron Spider suit inspired by Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War. This was a big collaboration between Sony Interactive Entertainment, Insomniac, Marvel Games, and Marvel Studios. And while you may have glimpsed the pre-order video before, you haven’t seen this new video we made to show it off – some of you will even be lucky enough to see this on the big screen before the movie when the film hits theaters later this week.

Getting the opportunity to work with Marvel Games and Marvel Studios on this was another dream come true on this project. Seeing Spider-Man on the big screen in the MCU with his Iron Spider suit is something we are really excited about, and we knew Spider-Man fans around the world would want the chance to unlock our version of the Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War inspired Iron Spider suit in-game. We were given access to the actual CG asset from the upcoming film (in theaters on April 27th!!) to ensure that it was as true to the suit you’ll see at the cinema as possible.

In Marvel’s Spider-Man, having a variety of suits for players to use was a must-have for us. We looked across all of the Spider-Man lore for inspiration, and in the final game you’ll find suits inspired by comics and film, as well as completely original suits created by Insomniac and other artists. Each of the suits looks absolutely spectacular and we can’t wait for you to see more of them.

Beyond that, most suits will also feature a special suit power that you can use in-game. These powers let you do amazing things. While we aren’t quite ready to show them just yet, I did want to mention a couple examples. The Spider-Punk suit lets you rock out with a guitar, doing an AoE attack that’ll knock enemies off their feet. And the Iron Spider has a suit power that… well, you’ll know it when you see it happen in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War.

Be sure to pre-order today, whether it’s on PS Store or at your favorite retailer, to get all Pre-Order bonuses including the Spidey Suit pack. And if you want some wallpapers for your phone, computer or PS4, just visit PS.com here to grab some!

How the PlayStation became a phenomenon with a single number

    fbadvertisment

In the past two decades, the Sony PlayStation has become one of the most powerful and popular brands in games. For younger fans, it can be hard to imagine what it was like when Sony was the new kid on the block.

Put yourself in the moment: this is the mid-90s. Nintendo’s establishing its iconic franchises and Sega’s Genesis is selling like hotcakes. The era is littered with the corpses of consoles that can’t get past these two titans. It’s crucial to remember, in this moment, Sony’s PlayStation isn’t guaranteed to be a hit.

We know now that the PlayStation would go on to become a phenomenon and that Sega would eventually exit the console hardware market. This trading of places was the result of many decisions and twists in the market. But one moment, a single word uttered at the very first Electronic Entertainment Expo, played a major part.

    “$299.”

That number would change the landscape of the game industry, sending Sony and Sega on new trajectories. This video explains how.

Sony Boss: No Fortnite Cross-Play Because PlayStation is the Best Place to Play

    fbadvertisment

In recent months Sony has taken some flack for their apparent unwillingness to join with Microsoft and Nintendo in looking for opportunities to allow cross-play across systems. Games like Minecraft and Rocket League can now be played together by friends of any platform preference… except PlayStation 4. Is there any chance that could change in the future? Well, perhaps for some games, but apparently not for Fortnite.

Shawn Layden, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America and chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios, has previously indicated that Sony is looking at possibilities for cross-play, but we’ve seen little to show for it. Speaking at the IFA technology show in Berlin, new Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida indicated that it could happen for some games, but not for Fortnite.

“On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that’s our belief. But actually, we already opened some games as cross-platform with PC and some others, so we decide based on what is the best user experience. That is our way of thinking for cross-platform.” — Kenichiro Yoshida

Yoshida sees PlayStation 4 as the best version of the game, and apparently, he doesn’t want to see it tainted by allowing players contact with what he sees as inferior versions. I’m not really sure what makes Fortnite so special that it couldn’t possibly be opened up to cross-play while other games could, but that’s the story Yoshida’s pitching. That still doesn’t explain why Sony is barring players from transferring their save data if they own the game on multiple platforms.

    Spider-Man PS4 Game’s Length Confirmed By Insomniac

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

    fbadvertisment

Insomniac Games community director James Stevenson has revealed PS4’s Spider-Man takes about 20 hours to beat. Stevenson unveiled the number when answering an inquisitive player’s question on Twitter.

It’s worth noting that 20 hours is the average taken from multiple play testers. Stevenson wrote that 20 hours is about how long it takes for someone to beat Spider-Man on the default difficulty and only when completing some quests and activities. Those that do more will take “a lot longer.” So the 20 hour mark is for the average player who’s not looking to test themselves against the game’s most challenging combat or complete every optional objective.

To provide a comparison, most of Insomniac’s games are about 10 hours long. One of the more notable exceptions is 2014’s Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive–just under 20 hours on the default difficulty if you only do some of the side missions and gather a few of the collectibles. So Spider-Man is much closer in length to Sunset Overdrive than Insomniac’s other titles, like Resistance 3, Fuse, or 2016’s Ratchet & Clank. If you were hoping to beat Spider-Man in a weekend so you could get back to chipping at your backlog, it seems totally plausible.

Spider-Man releases exclusively for PS4 on September 7. If you’re looking for more information on the game, Kallie travelled to LA to interview Spider-Man’s creative director Bryan Intihar. She also got to play a segment of the game as Mary Jane, whose levels are something you should be really excited about.

  • Fortnite Is Banning Players’ Accounts Right Now

Fortnite Is Banning Players’ Accounts Right Now

    fbadvertisment

Fortnite players have been thrown into a panic as it seems Epic Games is now banning a number of accounts – without warning.

According to the Twitter page @FNBRLeaks there is now a: “banwave across Fortnite…Everyone who modified pak files, DDoSED Servers, etc.

“I wish you the best of luck.”

The tweet, which is just going viral, has amassed a lot of concern from the Fortnite community.

Users have posted an image of the banned accounts, which states: “Account Disabled.

“Your account has been disabled. Accounts are disabled for one of the following reasons:

“- The account owner has requested the account be disabled.

    “- Fraud.

“-The account has been banned for misconduct in one our games.

    “Error Code: AS-18006”

We can’t see a lot of people choosing to disable their own Fortnite accounts in this case…

There’s still a lot of confusion over the exact specifications for a banning, with one Twitter user asking: “wait a second i modded pak files but I verified yesterdays. Everything is back to normal will I still get banned??”

Another worried user tweeted: “oh god I’m genuinly [sic] scared.”

Lots of pages – including @Angeloyt of AALeaks – FNBR Leaks – are already claiming their accounts have been banned and are desperately tweeting Epic Games and its official Twitter page for an answer as to why.

As news of the bans emerge, it’s not yet known exactly what will qualify your account to be locked, or how many accounts are being disabled.

We’re assuming Epic Games will be looking to release a statement – or at least try to respond to its many (many!) banned members of the Fortnite community.

Right now is the time to check your Fortnite account – have you been banned?

More to follow as it comes.

  • Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to PS5!

Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to PS5!

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

    fbadvertisment

Today we’re going to look at some new rumors that suggest the next Grand Theft Auto game is coming to the PlayStation 5. We’ll also look at other rumors that are helping us build an idea of how Rockstar plans to top themselves with the next release in their ongoing series.

Since it released, Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 52 million copies across all of the platforms it was released on. In terms of sales, that’s ridiculous. Given that number, there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Rockstar Games is going to release Grand Theft Auto VI.

Rumors have been spreading since GTA V was first released and they continue to persist even after the game came to PS4 and Xbox One. Rockstar is still adding new content to the fifth game in the series, but people are clamoring for the next game.

Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to PS5!

Originally people were hoping that GTA VI would show up in a few years, but several rumors have suggested that Rockstar doesn’t plan on doing anything with the series until 2020. For starters, Leslie Benzies, the President of Rockstar North (Developers of GTA), left the company and doesn’t plan on returning.

Leslie was integral in the development of the Grand Theft Auto games, so this departure could easily set back the timetables. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed any rumors, but people are saying that now we won’t see a new GTA until 2020 which would put it right in line with the PS5 release we’ve predicted. Can you say launch title?

On top of Leslie’s departure, a game like GTA takes a long time develop. Rockstar has never released a broken game, and that’s because they always take a “when it’s done” approach. We also need to consider the fact that Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming out in holiday of 2018, so this has likely been their primary focus for some time.

With Red Dead released, it would make sense for Rockstar to ramp up work on the next Grand Theft Auto title, but depending on how far along they may be internally, many are speculating we won’t see the new entry until 2020 at the earliest, which also happens to be when we expect to see the PS5.

Even if the new game releases on the current generation of consoles, we know from experience that Rockstar is capable of porting their games to the next generation, which is something we saw from GTA V. Either way you slice it, Rockstar will eventually do another game in their beloved series, it’s just a matter of when. From what we can tell, it will line up with the release of the PS5.

Rockstar has been known to expand on their worlds and Grand Theft Auto V was their biggest world yet. How are they going to top this one, you ask?

The World of Grand Theft Auto Six

Leslie Benzies in 2012 said in an interview with Adam Rosenberg quote:

“at some point we would like to have one big world containing all our cities and let the player fly between them and revisit their favorite areas, and in that context reimagining Vice City would be very interesting.”

Piggybacking off this quote, The Know also received some very interesting information from an anonymous source about the plans for GTA VI. While these are purely rumors, they have said that the source was reputable enough to report on the information.

For starters, the new Grand Theft Auto is code named “Project Americas” and is rumored to be based in Miami, or a fictional version of it. This points towards a return to Vice City, but the actual city of Miami does exist in the GTA universe as well, so it could also take place there.

The name “Project Americas,” refers to a rumored mechanic where players will be able to fly between the United States and South America to perform missions. This would make a lot of sense, given the massive drug trade and smuggling that happened between Colombia and the United States during the 1980s and the reign of Pablo Escobar.

A Female Lead Character? Why Not…

After the release of Grand Theft Auto V, the co-writer of the game, Dan Houser, did an interview with The Guardian about the future of the series. During this interview, they asked him about future games featuring a female lead character. His response was this:

“In the future, could we do a game with a lead female character? Of course, we just haven’t found the right game for it yet, but it’s one of the things we always think about.”

That female lead could be played by Eva Mendes according to new reports. This rumor comes from another that suggests Ryan Gosling is going to be the lead male protagonist in the new game.

While it’s not clear how Eva’s name became attached to the rumors. Speculation suggests that it could be Ryan’s relationship with her, or her attachment to the “Fast and Furious” series. I think it’s about time to switch things up and do a female perspective, and I’m not the only one.

    Current Story Rumors

Grand Theft Auto V had a unique story that included three interwoven characters. Thus far rumors on GTA VI’s story have been slim, but one rumor has come to light that suggests Rockstar is planning on including natural disasters as part of the next game.

Things like Earthquakes, Tornadoes, or perhaps even wildfires could add a lot of dynamic to the game. If Ryan Gosling’s character is a cop and Eva Mendes’ is a criminal, that could also add another layer to the gameplay.

It’s hard to predict a story as large as the kind that appears in GTA, but these small elements we’ve heard about thus far are suggesting some very interesting directions for the new game.

5 Things We Want to See From Grand Theft Auto VI

While the next Grand Theft Auto is still a ways out, there’s no stopping speculation, and we have some things we would like to see from the next entry in Rockstar’s flagship series. It’s true that the game will probably be incredible regardless, but we wouldn’t mind if they borrowed some of these ideas:

    1. A Brand New Location

While there’s been plenty of hype and speculation about returning to Vice City, let’s be honest here: that hype is fueled by nostalgia. Would I love to see a next-gen Vice City? Yes, of course, but part of the excitement in GTA is exploring brand new maps that dwarf the size of other open-world games.

Instead of revisiting a previous location, I would like to see Rockstar take us somewhere new. The possibility of a South American setting would be very interesting. With the success of the Just Cause series, it could be an option.

Or, we could make the leap to Europe for once. You may think that sounds crazy, but let’s not forget that in the early days of the series, Rockstar once took GTA to London.

I would even settle for a new city in America. Something like Chicago, or Boston would be a fresh new take for the series.

    2. A New Time Period

For the most part, Grand Theft Auto has been a game set in the modern era. While Vice City took us to the 80’s, I would like to see the series go back even further. For example, a setting in Chicago during the peak of the mafia would be an amazing step forward for the series.

We could rub shoulders with the likes of Al Capone and other great gangsters. Imagine if Rockstar offered their take on a classic mafia storyline. We’ve seen it done in the Mafia series, but this time period could really be elevated by the talented people working on GTA VI.

Or hey, maybe we could go into the future. It doesn’t have to be full science fiction, but a Grand Theft Auto that predicts the problems of the near future could be a great way for the series to flex its political satire and social commentary it’s known for.

    3. Support for VR

I imagine that if Grand Theft Auto VI supported VR, that most people would never leave their homes. While this doesn’t seem like a very high possibility on current VR tech, the PS5 will most likely introduce the next generation of PlayStation VR, which will most likely have the horsepower to support a game like GTA.

We already have Skyrim in VR, and it’s just as awesome as it sounds. With a similarly large title like GTA VI, virtual reality could have the mainstream support it needs to truly flourish.

    4. More Interaction With The World

Grand Theft Auto V has no shortage of things to do. There are numerous activities that range from small things like tennis, to larger ventures and side missions. We’ve never been wishing for more content in a GTA game, but there’s relatively little interaction with the world itself.

Yes, you can go into specific shops and houses, but I would like to see Rockstar expand on the interior environments and let us explore more of the world beyond the surface level. More shops and houses would be nice, but what about destructible environments?

What if we could take down a skyscraper or level a neighborhood? It sounds pretty crazy, but there could be serious consequences for the story if you start leveling entire blocks. At the very least, it would improve the playground of destruction Rockstar has already established.

    5. First-Person Options at Launch

When GTA V added the option to play in first-person, a lot of gamers found their new way to play the game. Having this option really opens up the experience to more gamers, so I’m hoping it becomes a standard feature when GTA VI launches.

The option for first-person would also lend itself nicely to VR, so they could kill two birds with one stone in this regard.

    Your Turn to Predict!

Now it’s time to give you a shot. Tell us what you think about these rumors and possibilities for GTA VI on the PS5! If you come up with some wild rumors, who knows, maybe we’ll feature your comment in a future article update?

Sony is finally rolling out a better way to search for content on the PlayStation Network.

Some IGN PS4 owners have noticed a revised search function while browsing the store, which means Sony is finally addressing an issue many fans have had since they first brought their consoles home.

The new search function incorporates the same virtual keyboard PS4 owners have used to enter credit card information or search for friends on the PSN for years.

In addition to creating a faster search tool, users will enjoy expanded functionality, as the tool can be used to search for games by name as well as by genre, studio, or even publisher.

The old scrolling search bar is still appearing for many players, and it is unclear when Sony plans to roll the update out to all PS4 owners. Polygon reports players allegedly in the new PlayStation firmware beta are also able to see the update, so the update may end up being part of the upcoming PlayStation firmware update 6.0.

Last week’s PSN sale was massive, but now that it’s gone two new sales have taken its place. One is PS Plus Specials, which offers big discounts on games exclusively for PlayStation Plus members. The other is a publisher sale that temporarily brings down the prices of Rockstar’s games. Let’s dive in and see what games are discounted between now and September 4.

You don’t need a PS Plus membership to take advantage of this weeks’ Rockstar deals. Grand Theft Auto V, which is often on sale nowadays, is down to the particularly low price of $20. If you’re nostalgic for the PS2 days, you can pick up the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy for $18, or grab any of the games individually for $9 each. Also $9 are Bully and the decidedly more violent game Manhunt.

As for the PS Plus Specials, you’ll find plenty of recommendable games on the discounted list. Monster Hunter World is down to $36 this week, while Blizzard’s hero shooter Overwatch: Legendary Edition will only set you back $30. Prospective city planners can pick up Cities: Skylines for $20, and those interested in space exploration can grab Mass Effect: Andromeda for $7.50.

You can find more picks below, or head to Sony’s deals page to find more PS4 game discounts, along with a selection of PS3 and PS Vita deals as well.

Some links to supporting retailers are automatically made into affiliate links, and GameSpot may receive a small share of those sales.

Sony might not be interested in talking about the PlayStation 5 just yet, but ResetEra user Gemusepizza points out that the latest version of the Unreal Engine 4 contains the PlayStation 5 code-name. The Unreal Engine 4 contains references to a console named “Erebus” alongside the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Additionally, they also found the abbreviation “TST2” also tied to what could be the next platform.

Erebus is a Greek deity who personified darkness. He is one of the first five beings in existence. Sony has traditionally code-named its consoles after Greek deities, which makes us believe that Erebus could be the PS5.

The PlayStation 4 was named Orbis, the PlayStation VR was code-named Morpheus, and the PS4 Pro was dubbed Neo internally. We know for a fact that Erebus is not Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox console because that device is code-named Scarlett.

You can see the image files right here to compare for yourself, but if this rumor proves to be true than we might be even closer to the next generation than we originally thought!

Though Xbox’s Phil Spencer casually mentioned that the next gen is already in the works, it was industry analyst Michael Pachter that is putting more of a timeline of the future of gaming. Pachter recently told GamingBolt, “I’m sure Microsoft intends to launch first, and I am equally certain that the new Xbox will be backwards compatible with any Xbox One X software.”

He then added, “I agree that it’s hard for Xbox One X purchasers, but they should know 4 years into a cycle that there is another one coming. My guess is that Microsoft intents to launch in 2020, but if they think is going to launch the PS5 then, they will launch early.”

Xbox Gamers Are More Hardcore Than PlayStation, Says Microsoft

Microsoft’s getting stomped globally by the PlayStation 4, but it believes that “hardcore gamers” gravitate towards the Xbox One ahead of Sony’s system. Aaron Greenberg, one of the marketing bigwigs at the Redmond firm, told IGN Italia at Gamescom 2018 that he believes the most engaged players prefer to game in green.

I notice the same and identical thing on my friends list and the data we have available suggests exactly that. Hardcore players, those who prefer the best gaming experience, have always been on our side, from the first Xbox to Xbox 360 and now with the Xbox One X. Looking at the numbers and results of the competition, we have a smaller installed base, but the attach rate and sales data for many games are much higher on Xbox. This is due to the fact that our userbase is made up of more hardcore gamers, and we return to the previous point: it is our relationship with the community that puts us in this position. We are at Gamescom especially for our users and the Xbox Fan Fest and we do similar activities all over the world. Along with Phil Spencer we are always very attentive to this aspect, it is really important to spend time with our fans and we will continue to do so, it is part of our way of being.

There’s no doubt that Microsoft, at the present moment, is much more openly engaging with fans and the media; the problem is that it often feels like it’s talking purely to maintain a semblance of relevance.

There’s no doubt in our minds that the PS4 is the modern king of gaming. With a wide selection of great titles available, in genres as diverse as FPS, JRPG, Battle Royal, and others, there’s never been a better time to own what many claim is Sony’s best console since the original Playstation.

Despite this, we’ve all got friends who have yet to see the light, whether they’ve been loyal followers of Nintendo or Microsoft for years, or have spent a ton customizing their rig and don’t see the need for a console. We don’t need to severe ties and create bad blood by ending these relationships (that’s what killstreaks are for!), so it’s fortunate that there are several great games on the market right now that we can enjoy with our friends, no matter their platform of choice.

    Fortnite
Available on: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC

A global phenomenon that’s taken the gaming world by storm, Epic Game’s online juggernaut has grown to more than 125 unique players, with more than 40 million logging on at least once per month to play. Offering both a battle royal and co-op survival mode, Fortnite draws players in with gameplay that’s smooth and simple, but capable of immense depth, offering a host of different strategies to help, or hinder, your fellow players. Currently in its fifth season of DLC, Fortnite is an online experience the likes of which few have ever matched, no matter your preferred system.

    Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Available on: PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC

First introduced in 2015 to a lukewarm reception and modest sales, R6S has become one of the most unbelievable comeback stories, and one of the best multiplayer FPS’s, in gaming history, boasting over 35 million players as of June 2018. In contrast to the Call of Duty series, R6:S requires players to work together as a team and implement a decisive strategy to obtain victory. With the ability to shoot through nearly every surface in the game, and with players having to spectate for the remainder of the match upon death, R6S, with its slower, more tactical approach, is a breath of fresh air in a genre oversaturated with adrenaline and Michael Bay moments.

Aside from dominating the living room, R6S has begun to move into the esports arena, sponsoring incredible teams, sporting the best gear, and offering huge cash prizes to the teams who prove their skill.

    Diablo III
Available on: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC (Coming to Nintendo Switch Q3 2018)

The latest from a series long regarded as one of the best in gaming history, Diablo III is another amazing game that nearly crashed at the get-go. Plagued by bugs, and a nearly reviled auction house, when it launched in 2012, Diablo III has evolved to become one of the best western RPGs on the market. While originating on the PC, Diablo III has implemented a control scheme that’s simple, responsive, and effective no matter what platform you play on. With Blizzard’s Battle.net service, players can drop in and out of co-op sessions seamlessly, allowing you to play with friends for tough areas before striking out on your own if you so choose. The only downside is that, regardless of system, Diablo III requires you to be always-online, even for its single player component, due to Blizzard’s DRM policies. Despite this drawback, and a rocky start, Diablo III is an excellent dark fantasy RPG, that more than lives up to the standard set by its predecessors.

If the fact that it’s the fastest-selling entertainment product in history doesn’t tell you all you need to know about Rockstar Games’ masterpiece, there’s not much else we can say to convince you. With over $6 billion in revenue, GTAV is also one of the best entries in the long-running GTA series. Offering the ability to shift between three distinct and unforgettable protagonists, and the ability to shoot, punch, detonate, drive, swim, and fly through any obstacles in their path, GTAV elevates the zany, offensive, and downright insane open world gameplay the series is known for to new heights of extreme. The game’s online mode allows players to share in that mayhem with others all over the world, and is constantly being updated with new content. Robbing banks never felt so good.

  • Extensions Capabilities in Twitch Chat

    Extensions Capabilities in Twitch Chat

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

    The Post

When you think of interacting with your favorite streamers on Twitch, you probably think of the energy in Twitch Chat. This is where all the action happens. It is where streamers and viewers interact with each other; where you cheer your favorite streamers with Bits and where memories are created.

Beyond Twitch Chat, Twitch Extensions allow developers to create experiences that increase the level of engagement in a channel by exposing opportunities to interact in new and exciting ways, so that viewers and streamers can connect like never before. Bridging the power of Extensions with the visibility of Chat in real time would give everyone in the channel an opportunity to be an active participant in the live stream.

Today we’re announcing the first of a series of features focused on providing developers with tools for increasing channel interaction, Extensions-in-Chat.

    What is Extensions-in-Chat?

The premise behind Extensions-in-Chat is fairly straightforward. By providing Extensions with direct access to Chat, developers can create even more powerful experiences for streamers and viewers to enjoy. Many Extensions are already doing this by connecting through IRC. By now leveraging the Send Extension Chat Message API, we’re able to bridge the functionality of an Extension with the visibility of a chat message — and utilize a single set of standardized interfaces. For instance, an Extension can now send an alert to Chat when the streamer achieves a new World of Warcraft all-time high Arena rating without the need to create an IRC bot.

To use Extensions-in-Chat, a developer can utilize the Send Extension Chat Message API, and with a few lines of code, enable their new or existing Extension to communicate with Chat.

    Enabling Extensions-in-Chat

We want developers to focus on building great experiences through Extensions — not the technology stack. For this reason, Extensions-in-Chat is an option in the developer’s Extension dashboard that can be enabled with a flag. Once this flag is enabled, minimal coding is needed to start communicating with Chat. Similarly, we’re providing streamers with an easy opt-out mechanism so that they can manage the Extensions with access to their Chat.

    Getting Started

    • Read the documentation
    • Login to dev.twich.tv
    • Navigate to Extension dashboard
    • Click on Extensions Capabilities nav option
    • Check the Chat Capabilities box
    • Update the Extension description with new features

With this release, developers enable streamers to post messages and notifications in the desktop channel chat so that everyone in the channel can see and interact with content in real time. We are currently working on mobile support for this feature.

    Also Available: Pop-out Extensions

In addition to Extensions-in-Chat, Pop-out Extensions are now available. For developers, this means that their responsive Extensions can now be undocked from the channel page much like the Twitch Chat pop-out. This gives developers much more real estate in the Extension to deliver messaging and experiences when a viewer chooses to undock it. Viewers and streamers can pop out panel and live config Extensions.

We’d love to hear what you think of Extensions-in-Chat V1 and are excited to see how you use this new feature to create increased interaction on streamers’ channels. Connect with us via @TwitchDev on Twitter or the Developer forums.

  • Sound Alerts: A Bits-in-Extensions success story

Sound Alerts: A Bits-in-Extensions success story

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Not every Twitch Extension is made by a whole team of people. Sometimes, like in the case of Sounds Alerts, all it takes is one person looking to improve the Twitch experience.

James (aka Altoar) is a video producer, hobbyist programmer, and longtime esports fan from Germany. With the announcement of Extensions, he decided to put his hobbies to the test. “I got super excited, because I could combine both of my hobbies and create Extensions that help viewers and broadcasters for a platform that I use myself every day,” said Altoar. “I like to create innovative and helpful stuff and see it used by a lot of people.”

Altoar released his first Extension, World of Warcraft Armory, late last year. This panel Extension, which provides a wide variety of information about the streamer’s World of Warcraft character, is active on nearly 20,000 Twitch channels. Less than a year after the Extensions release, Altoar revealed his second Extension, a Bits-enabled soundboard known as Sound Alerts.

    Kortney uses Sound Alerts!

“Sound Alerts is a tool where broadcasters can upload their own sounds or select top sounds from other streamers and assign them to buttons which viewers can press to play the Sound Alert on the stream,” Altoar explained. “Streamers with Bits-enabled channels can also set a Bits amount that viewers must use for each sound button, so they can monetize their use of the Extension.” The Extension includes a leaderboard where viewers can see which sounds are most popular on each stream. Additionally, once a viewer initiates a sound on the stream, the Extension triggers a chatbot message and overlay notification to the streamer. Both elements have been crucial in driving viewer engagement and participation with the Extension.

Sound Alerts was an immediate hit, with thousands of installs on its first day. “Sound Alerts released about three months ago, and today streamers have already uploaded tens of thousands of different sound effects. There are streamers who have earned thousands of dollars in revenue share with Twitch through only Sound Alerts,” says Altoar. “Streamers reach out to me, giving me feedback and saying how much they like this Extension. That’s absolutely incredible.”

What was even more special for Altoar, however, was seeing the unique ways streamers decided to implement his Extension, a few of which he never imagined during development. “For example,” Altoar said, “/abootgaming, one of the first streamers who installed this Extension, is streaming a lot of PUBG and they added fake gunshot sounds to their Sound Alerts. Viewers can use Bits to trigger those sounds, distracting them and making them think someone in the game is shooting at them. The imagination is endless.”

Because of Bits-in-Extensions, Sounds Alert became a financial success for Altoar as well, allowing Extension development to become more than just a hobby. “With the Bits-in-Extensions feature, I recently started my own business building Twitch Extensions,” says Altoar. “I absolutely want to build more Extensions in the future, especially simple tools which enhance the user experience for everyone.” To date, Sound Alerts has been installed on over 12,000 channels and has steady month-over-month revenue growth.

Altoar is already hard at work on his next Extension, Vote Now, an overlay for esports tournaments that will allow viewers to make predictions about in-progress matches and view the results in real time. “I see streamers creating polls on a different website, pasting the link into the chat or using a chatbot, which makes chat conversations unreadable because everyone is writing the vote command into the chat,” says Altoar. “With this Extension, I want to avoid this and improve user experience for every viewer by simply integrating polls directly into the stream as a video overlay component where viewers just have to click to vote.” Although Vote Now isn’t officially released yet, it already made its debut during the StarCraft II HomeStory Cup.

With two successful Extension launches under his belt, Altoar has a few tips for any fledgling developers hoping to create Extensions of their own.

“Test your Extension enough to make sure there are no bugs when you release it to the public. Before I release a new Extension, I send the first version to whitelisted broadcasters only and ask friends to test the Extension on their streams first,” says Altoar. “Also, visit the developer forums and don’t hesitate to ask for help. The Twitch developer community is very friendly and is there to help.”

“I see a lot of potential in Extensions for the future,” Altoar said. “This is just the beginning, and it’s awesome to see how the Twitch team is working hard to make the Extensions experience better and better.”

Get started building your own Extension today!
