Watch and Cheer During Hearthstone Global Games to Support Teams and Unlock Loot!

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hearthstone Global Games (HGG) is heating up and the top 16 countries and regions in the world have been decided. On the road to the playoffs at BlizzCon®, join the community in celebrating the journey with HGG Cheer — a new program that lets you Cheer with Bits for your favorite teams on Twitch using custom Cheermotes — all while unlocking sweet loot along the way.

Every Cheer from Sept. 17 through Nov. 4 on /playhearthstone brings you and the entire community closer to unlocking Cheering goals, which include in-game items like card packs and a card back, and exclusive Twitch emotes. Even better: a portion of the revenue from Bits you Cheer goes directly to the team you’re supporting.

Right below the video player on /playhearthstone, you can track team-specific and global community Cheering progress; check out your individual goals, and see leaderboards that highlight each team’s biggest superfan. HGG teams will not only feel the love from your Cheers, they’ll get to see themselves represented on Twitch and within Hearthstone on unlockable team-branded items!

    How it works:

    • Be sure to link your Blizzard account to your Twitch account so you can claim loot when items become available.
    • Cheer for your favorite teams on /playhearthstone (or any of the international channels) during HGG events by clicking on the Bits gem at the bottom of chat, selecting the team’s logo, adding the number of Bits and a custom message to cheer them on.
    • Once Cheering goals are reached, items will be automatically deposited in your Hearthstone account as long as you have your account linked with your Twitch account.

Support your team in the Hearthstone Global Games beginning on September 17 and follow them as they chase the trophy at BlizzCon. For more details on the HGG Schedule, click here. Follow the Hearthstone channel to be notified when events go live.

    FAQ

    Q. How much revenue does a team receive when Bits are Cheered for them?

    A. For each Bit Cheered for a team, that team and Blizzard (as the tournament organizer) receive the same amount of revenue share.

    Q. How do I Cheer for a team?

    A. Click on the Bits gem at the bottom of the chat window, select the team’s logo, add the number of Bits you want to use and a custom message to cheer them on.

    Q. Can I use the regular Cheer command (e.g. cheer100) during HGG?

    A. No, regular Cheers won’t work on the PlayHearthstone channel during HGG. You can Cheer for any or all of the teams competing in HGG using the team-themed Cheermotes.

    Q. I forgot to link my Battle.net account before Cheering…Can I still get the items?

    A. Yes! First, go ahead and link your Blizzard account to your Twitch account. Then, return to the PlayHearthstone channel. You’ll see that a “Redeem All” button has appeared. Hit that button to claim your items! Going forward, the items will be deposited directly into your account.

    Q. Where can I watch HGG in my native language?

    A. You can view HGG in English, Russian, French, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, and Thai.

Weekend Project: Stay Hydrated with a 3D Printed Drinks Tap

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Want to bring the convenience of a soda fountain machine into your own home? Take a refreshing sip from the 3D printed Drinks Tap created by That Robot Guy.

There are few things in the restaurant world that are as enticing as a free refill, just one more glass of your beloved soft drink. What if you could take the refill machine from the local fast food joint and into your home?

One maker named That Robot Guy has created a 3D printed Drinks Tap that you can build for around $15-$20. This simple robotic machine is essentially made up of a handful of 3D printed parts, along with a pump, switch, and power socket. All you have to do is flip over your favorite soft drink (or a water bottle for the more health-conscious maker) and connect it to the tap, hitting the 3D printed level to get the refreshments flowing.

This 3D printing project has the look and style of a drink refill machine that you’d find in a restaurant. It’s easy to build and the components are pretty easy to acquire. Let’s take a look at what you need and how to build this 3D printed Drinks Tap.

3D Printed Drinks Tap: What You Need & How to Build it

That Robot Guy’s 3D printed Drinks Tap is comprised of six 3D printed parts: the base, support for the switch and nozzle, the nozzle itself, drip tray, the PUSH lever, and tube cover. The STL files are free to download via Thingiverse. The refreshment will flow through PVC tubing, so no need to worry about your drink coming in contact with the 3D printed plastic.

Aside from the 3D printed parts, here’s what else you need to build your own refill machine:

Once you have all of your 3D printed parts and non-printed components prepared, you can move on to the assembly process. Taking your bottled drink, the first step is to cut a 6mm wide on the lid and ensure that it fits over the top of the pump. Once this is verified, attach the bottom of the lid to the pump using your glue gun.

Next, you will need to cut the PVC tubing to measure out to 50cm, connecting one end to the outlet of the pump. After that, it’s time to attach the 3D printed parts to the base, starting with the support piece and nozzle rack with a push fit. Feed the tubing through each part and cut away any excess tubing. Use the M3 bolts to attach the support piece and, once the tubing is fed through the parts, the hose cover as well.

The final few steps consist of soldering the wires on the power supply port, connecting the switch, and connecting the power supply to the power socket. More details on the schematics are available on That Robot Guy’s website. Lastly, mount and screw the bottle onto the pump and flip it over, putting it back onto the mount.

From here, you should be able to start pouring your own refreshments from your very own Drinks Tap. Stay hydrated!

  • Weekend Project: Stash Your Cash in this 3D Printed Secret Coin Bank

Weekend Project: Stash Your Cash in this 3D Printed Secret Coin Bank

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Maker Greg Zumwalt is back on Instructables with another 3D printed coin bank. His latest creation is the Simple Secret Box II, a fully 3D printed coin bank with a secret locking mechanism.

Searching for a fun way to teach his grandchildren the valuable lesson of saving money, maker Greg Zumwalt decided to design a coin bank with a secret lock mechanism. This resulted in the Simple Secret Box II: Coin Bank, a 3D printing project that will provide you with a secure place to stash your leftover change.

We’ve covered some of Zumwalt’s projects in the past, including a 3D printed Apple Coin Bank that utilized a similar mechanism. His latest coin bank doubles as a kind of puzzle, as the dovetail fixed joinery and a sliding dovetail top makes it tricky to open. The designer based the locking mechanism off of the German designed “Radbox”, which uses two mirror image slotted wheels to keep the box closed.

Furthermore, the Simple Secret Box II functions with no batteries, electronics, motors, or any hardware really. Zumwalt even adds some excitement by refraining to tell us how to open the box, leaving the mystery for you to figure out. All you need to make your own coin bank is a 3D printer and some filament. Let’s take a look at how to make this frugally-minded 3D printing project on your own!

3D Printed Coin Bank: What You Need & How to Build it

As we previously stated, all you need to make the Simple Secret Box II is a 3D printer, so no need to break out your wallet for electronics and other non-printed components. The STL files for this 3D printed coin bank are freely available through Zumwalt’s Instructables page.

There are nine different parts to 3D print, each of which should be 3D printed at .15mm layer height and 20 percent infill. After the parts are all 3D printed, you may need to do some sanding and post-processing in order to ensure smooth movement once everything is put together. The designer also recommends filing all of the edges that came in contact with the print bed, especially in and around the dovetail joinery.

Once you’ve finished 3D printing and cleaning up the parts, it’s time to build your coin bank. The assembly process is quite simple and is laid out in just a few photos. Start by connection the “Side, Left”, “Side, Right”, and “Divider” parts.

Next, using the “End, Lock”, “Cam 1” and “Cam 2” components, slide Cam 2 and Cam 1 onto the axle on end lock. Make sure that these cams can easily pivot on the axle. Align the end lock axle with the hole in the divider and press this assembly onto the end of the sides and divider assembly. You have to rotate the two Cam parts until the flat sides are parallel with the divider.

Use a business card to hold them in place and slide “Top With Slot” into the assembly until it aligns with end lock. Finally, remove the business card and secure the top with the “End” part and press the “Base” onto the bottom. Now you have your very own 3D printed coin bank!

To learn more about how the assembly process and how the secret locking mechanism works, check out the full project description on Instructables.

  • Primark Are Selling Fortnite Merch With T-Shirts Starting At Just £6

Primark Are Selling Fortnite Merch With T-Shirts Starting At Just £6

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Primark has jumped on the 2018 Fortnite bandwagon and are now selling a range of very reasonably-priced t-shirts.

The ‘Primark X Fortnite’ collection has sent fans into a frenzy, with gamers excited to pick up t-shirts, starting at just £6.

The high street store revealed the collection on their official Instagram account, much to the delight of Fortnite fanatics.

    They wrote:

Our loot of official Fortnite merch has landed exclusively at Primark. Make your way up the ranks and achieve that coveted victory royale in one of these must-have tees.

The ‘Primark X Fortnite’ collection includes t-shirts for both adults and children, with some of the designs featuring the game’s trademark dance moves.

The post has been liked more than 45,000 times at the time of writing, which shows just how high the demand is going to be.

One person commented to say they’re putting them on their Christmas list, with others saying they were ‘on their way’ to the store.

Primark are well-ahead when it comes to preparing for Christmas – they’re set to launch a Disney advent calendar.

Instead of chocolate behind each door, they’ve gone with something less tasty but something which should last a whole lot longer – Disney baubles!

For every day leading up to Christmas from December 1, you can open up an advent calendar door and add your Disney-themed decoration to your tree.

The new calendar was shared on Instagram by disneyfind, who said:

Disney Christmas bauble advent calendar COMING SOON to @primark priced at £15 – I actually squealed when I opened this!

The calendar costs £15, meaning it’s just 60p per bauble. Which is an absolute bargain, I’m sure you’ll agree.

Selfridges are also getting into the festive spirit early on, having made headlines recently as they became the first department store to put up their Christmas decorations.

In a press statement, Selfridges Christmas and home buyer, Eleanor Gregory, said:

We have so many customers visiting from all over the world, eager to snap up festive decorations and souvenirs on their London summer holidays which they can’t buy at home.

This year it will expand to Christmas gifts for pets, the option to create a personalised family Christmas jumper and more than 50 types of tinsel ranging in price from £3 to £15 for the ‘ultimate tinsel garland.’

The store expects to hit peak stock by the end of September, with customers being able to pick from a range of nearly 4,000 Christmas-themed items.

The cheapest item you can buy is a souvenir pencil for £1.95, one of the more costly items is a selection of ornate neon signs selling for around £8,500 – which is probably slightly over-budget, but why not?

I know we’re only at the end of summer, but Christmas is pretty good, isn’t it?

  • Behind the Development: The Pokémon Badge Collector Extension

Behind the Development: The Pokémon Badge Collector Extension

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Few entertainment franchises have achieved global success in the same way Pokémon has. Last week, Twitch and The Pokémon Company International kicked off Pokémon: The Series extravaganza featuring 16 movies and 900+ episodes to be live-streamed in several different marathons spanning into 2019. This will be the single longest programmatic viewing event to stream on Twitch.

Another aspect we’re particularly excited about is the Pokémon Badge Collector Extension. This super-slick and engaging, interactive overlay allows viewers to virtually collect Pokémon badges while they watch.

To activate the Extension, viewers click on the Poké Ball overlay and start collecting Pokémon badges. That’s not all, though; the Extension is feature packed including:

    • Achievements — track lifetime stats, such as points and total badges collected over the course of the entire marathon
    • Inventory — review and search through all the Pokémon you’ve caught
    • Leaderboard — see how you rank with friends and other Pokémon fans who are also watching and playing along
    • Bonuses — complete individual and global community goals to earn special bonuses and rewards
Review and search through all the Pokémon you’ve caught!
Complete individual and global community goals to earn special bonuses and rewards.

We caught up with the creative folks over at Stink Studios to learn more about what went into building such a unique and innovative Extension for Twitch.

TwitchDev: Why are you excited about this program and Extension?

Stink Studios: Twitch is the only major live streaming platform that offers a way for developers to create interactive applications that exist over the content. Plus, anyone can build an Extension and distribute it to broadcasters, truly democratizing this platform’s feature.

Here at Stink Studios, we’ve contextualized this as a sort-of augmented reality: an Extension acts as that heads-up display to live content. There is a lot of talk about the merging of technology and content; Twitch Extensions do this.

TwitchDev: Is this the first Extension you’ve built for Twitch? If yes, where did you start?

Stink Studios: This is our first Extension that we’ve built for Twitch. When building for a new platform, the very first place we start is the documentation. Fortunately, Twitch Extensions has written pretty thorough information to get developers started, but leaves it pretty open-ended so developers can customize their codebase to suit their needs. The next step we did was to do a general audit of the landscape, combing through pre-existing Extensions and searching Github for publicly available codebases. Finally, we prototyped typical network relation strategies — 1:1, 1:N, N:N, and N:1 — within the Twitch Developer Rig since these patterns would be the foundation to our extension.

TwitchDev: Can you briefly describe your development process, including how you came up with the idea, how long it took, what you did to test or troubleshoot, etc.?

Stink Studios: Here at Stink Studios, creative and technical teams work closely together to come up with new concepts for clients. We iterated a lot of ideas together in what we call a “grab-bag deck.” One idea that stuck out was collecting badges throughout a stream’s duration. In particular, how can we reward viewers for active watching? Twitch told us that they think Pokémon would be a great content partner for this concept, and we did another round where we tied the technical concept with the content.

From there, we created UX documentation about how the Extension works, such as user flows and game mechanics, which flowed into creative designs that gave the Extension a look and feel that is consistent with both the Twitch and Pokémon universes. These first two phases (UX and design with technical R&D) took about four weeks.

Finally, we went into our coding process, where we began to actually build the Extension from the ground up. Since this was a new platform for us, we had to vet out how the Extension works across different screen sizes, as well as how to handle about 100,000 concurrent users within this context. Then, we created an overall backend systems architecture and split out the visual components to be built out on the front end. We divided and conquered over about six quick sprints, which took us about five weeks to build. However, now that we have a lot of the infrastructure encapsulated as reusable components, we can have the foundation to build any future extensions efficiently.

TwitchDev: Describe the tech behind this Extension? Any hurdles you had to overcome?

Stink Studios: For the front end of this project, we used React and Redux since they are battle-tested and production-ready libraries that have a lot of community support. We sometimes use Vue on other projects, but since the Twitch Developer Rig is already built with React for the front end, so we decided to align with that.

For the back end of this project, we used a serverless architecture, built on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Serverless architecture is a relatively new backend paradigm, where the server only exists when data is transmitted to it, rather than having a box that is “always-on.” In particular, we used AWS API Gateway and Lambda to both handle our users and their badge collections, which are stored on an Aurora database. In order to alleviate stress on the database when a lot of users collected a badge simultaneously, we needed a way to slow down all the requests. To accommodate this, we used AWS’s SQS as a virtual conveyor belt. Interestingly enough, SQS is actually one of the oldest services on AWS. In combination with all of the relatively new services we have used, it served as a good contrast in our architecture.

Finally, to be incredibly reactive to viewers, we leaned into optimistic updates with eventual consistency model. That is to say, viewers would immediately see their badge and stat updates after a collection without having to wait for the server to return any information. Once the server processed all the information in bulk, it would validate their collection and tell the front end, which would either retain the collection or rollback the change. Using these principles allows for viewers to have immediate gratification without sacrificing the verification of their actions.

TwitchDev: The Extension initially had some outages due to significantly higher usage than expected, can you describe how you optimized and scaled to keep up with demand?

Stink Studios: This outage affected primarily our Users API. In particular, viewers entering the stream were not able to access the Extension. If you were in the stream before the outage occurred, you could actually keep collecting Pokémon badges. Our primary issue was bottlenecks with the database. We made a lot of optimizations to our AWS Lambda functions to pool and reuse database connections, but ultimately, pivoted away from using a serverless architecture to a more typical server-based setup on AWS Elastic Beanstalk. Fortunately, we were using a framework that made the transition relatively painless. Although our Collect API is still a serverless microservice, it makes more sense for our Users API to use a more typical pattern for accessing and writing user information. Most of the time, the tried-and-true solutions work the best!

Watch and collect Pokémon badges over on the TwitchPresents channel and dubbed on its companion channels in French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese.

  • Xbox Has Released A ‘Greaseproof’ Controller

Xbox Has Released A ‘Greaseproof’ Controller

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

In a slightly weird but probably ingenious move, Xbox have announced they have created a greaseproof controller.

You know how it is, you’re hunched round the console feverishly playing away with your mates, your palms sweaty, mom’s spaghetti, and suddenly you’re losing your grip. Your reactions aren’t as quick as they used to be and your fingers feel restricted by a strange lubrication that rather than making them go faster is hindering them instead.

Your nerves are getting the better of you. Not daring to look away from the screen, you wipe your forehead in a bid to spot a clue as to what’s going on down there.

And that’s when you smell it, the grease, The dripping, oozing grease from those delicious chicken wings slathered in hot sauce, the remnants of which lie desecrated in a bucket in the corner of your room.

The substance only seems to be spreading, it has infiltrated your controller and slowly the buttons are seizing up. Your on-screen avatar is glitching and all energy is being sapped away under the disgusting weight of inexplicable, horrific grease.

    Damn you, chicken dinner!

Well fear not intrepid gamer, your cries of anguish have been heard by the Xbox gods, and they have provided.

So leave those napkins where they are, don’t worry about the mess of wings at your feet or the delicious, orange Wotsit/Cheetos dust caking your fingers, Xbox have you covered.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wq_vAYlnEY?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281][youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wq_vAYlnEY?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

To celebrate the full release of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One, the team have created a limited edition, greaseproof controller.

The controller is in reference to the message PUBG players see when they win a match – winner winner chicken dinner.

As the creators, Xbox Australia, say:

It’s time to say goodbye to the greasy fingers of yesterday and hello to the sweet victory of tomorrow: no longer will chicken dinners slip through a player’s fingers, as Xbox Australia has created the limited edition PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS Greaseproof Controller!

Created to celebrate the graduation of the game from Xbox Game Preview to full release (out now) and as a nod to the fan favourite “WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!” phrase, the controller features a patented coating that is resistant to chicken grease – assisting players in their fight for elusive, yet tasty, chicken dinner victories.

The controller is coated with a layer of urethane, which is applied by hand, so it’s not just greaseproof but also resistant to scratches and water. It’s also in custom PUBG colours.

If you want to get your slippery hands on one of these suckers you’ll have to be quick, as there are only a few up for grabs over at their Facebook page.

Of course, if you don’t get your clammy hands on one, I’m sure there alternatives: cling film around the controller, bags of climbing chalk, fresh air…

Greasy fingers crossed, however, that the innovative controllers become more widely available in the near future.

Marvels Spider Man Review 3393264 spider man ps4

Let’s get right to it: Marvel’s Spider-Man, the latest effort from Insomniac Games is quite possibly one of the best superhero games of all time, and inarguably the finest game starring the wall crawler to date. It’s not quite the Arkham beater you might have been hoping for, but it comes pretty damn close in our eyes.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utVr-n0MaU0?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281][youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utVr-n0MaU0?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Insomniac’s take on Spidey doesn’t attempt to tie-in to the comic books, or to the MCU version of the character played by Tom Holland. Instead, they’ve opted to create their own take on the character – one that fuses elements and characters from both the comic books and the movies.

The Peter Parker we see here isn’t a teenager, but an experienced crime fighter who’s put away his fair share of super-powered criminals. The game picks up as this more seasoned Spider-Man heads out to his final confrontation with the Kingpin, a brilliant little sequence that acts as an exciting tutorial, and sets up the thrust of the game’s narrative. With the Kingpin of crime locked up, how long will it take for the city’s criminal element to descend into chaos?

We won’t go into the rest of the story here, as there are plenty of genuinely surprising cameos and fan favourite characters that show up, and being surprised by these moments in the story is all part of the fun – especially for fans of Spider-Man lore.

Classic villains rear their heads in some of the most memorable and creative boss battles we’ve ever seen in a big budget video game, with Insomniac making fantastic use of Spidey’s unique powers to create thrilling and truly memorable set pieces that don’t rely on quick time events anywhere near as much as previous trailers for the game had led us to believe.

Even if you don’t have a GCSE in Spider-Man history, there are enough twists, turns, and suitably shocking character moments over the course of the 20 hour story to keep players invested, thanks in no small part to some fantastic vocal performances and detailed facial animations. This game truly has all the makings of a classic Spider-Man story, and by the time the credits roll, you’ll be desperate for a sequel.

Marvels Spider Man Review Spider Man 1

When you’re not playing through the story, you’ll be swinging across the city, catching thieves just like flies. We are happy to report that web swinging in this game is the best it’s ever been, and will absolutely recapture the thrill you felt the first time you explored New York in 2004’s Spider-Man 2.

Guiding the webhead through a beautifully realised New York City is an absolute joy, with fluid movements and tight responsive controls ensuring that you’ll be gracefully pirouetting your way across Manhattan in no time at all. Spidey’s animations are absolutely gorgeous, and Insomniac have smartly added a parkour button, which means if you swing into a building or any other solid object, you’ll simply bounce off or run over it and be on your way, without bringing your momentum to a grinding halt.

It’s also easier than ever to change direction or altitude while swinging, thanks to buttons that let you zip across buildings and grapple to certain ledges. The novelty of leaping off the tallest building you can find before shooting out a web line and swinging away at the last possible second still hasn’t worn off for us, even hours into the game.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5-_MvCWSfI?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281][youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5-_MvCWSfI?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

In fact, in our first few hours of play, we were too distracted by all the fun little side missions to even be thinking about getting on with the story. Don’t get us wrong, Marvel’s Spider-Man doesn’t reinvent the wheel in terms of open world activities by any stretch, but because the simple act of getting from A to B is so enjoyable,  you won’t mind the occasional repetitive crime or collectable.

After all, swinging along before jumping down to stop a random mugging or kidnapping before carrying on is what being Spider-Man is all about, and these random side events feel so seamless thanks to a smooth, fluid combat system, so they rarely disrupt your Spidery day. There are also civilians to save and car chases to get involved with, but we would have liked a little more variety in this area.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dV2Ep4GzSrU?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281][youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dV2Ep4GzSrU?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Other side tasks besides your standard crime fighting involve hunting down backpacks from your old school days, and taking photos of famous landmarks across the city, including the Empire State Building and Avengers Tower – these aren’t particularly thrilling jobs, but they often throw up nice little Easter eggs for fans.

There are a couple of slightly more involved side-missions too, some of which involve a couple of lesser known Spidey villains – but the majority of these don’t really leave much of a lasting impression. Oh, there are also enemy bases to take, which offer waves of enemies which can be taken out using either stealth or… a louder approach.

Completing any of these fun little diversions will contribute to unlocking cool new suits and upgrading your gear to be the best Spider you can be, which means that everything you do while exploring the city will has some kind of tangible payoff, which might not be why Peter Parker does what he does, but we want the loot, dammit.

    Marvels Spider Man Review %name

Because Spider-Man is a modern AAA title, it obviously has unlockable skill trees and gear for you to upgrade. Much in the style of the Arkham games, you can get equipment that aids you with stealth, combat, and movement, with some really fun new gadgets that can picked up later on in the game, including impact webbing that pins enemies instantly to walls, and a Spider drone that will aid you in battle.

Combat is an absolute blast by the way, and makes the most of Spidey’s versatile set of powers. It takes a little getting used to at first, but you’ll soon be dodging, webbing, and punching your way through hordes of goons. The game particularly seems to reward players for paying attention to their surroundings in a fight, which we really like.

The webhead is often able to gain an advantage by throwing objects at enemies, or pulling heavy environmental hazards down to immobilise foes. Any bad guys that are close to walls can be webbed to them to take them out of the fight, while Spidey can even bounce off of objects to take out multiple threats at once.

Assessing the environment before a fight and then making the most of it can be the difference between life and death, as too many enemies attacking at once can overwhelm and take a real chunk out of your health.

    Marvels Spider Man Review %name

Stealth is slightly less fun than the straight up combat, but it still has its perks. Like the Arkham games, there are a multitude of gadgets and skills to help you screw with your victims as you creep overhead, and singling a foe out before webbing them to the ceiling without alerting the others honestly never gets old.

In terms of creating a rewarding interactive Spider-Man experience then, Insomniac has absolutely nailed it. Simply put, it has never felt this good to control the webslinger, with both movement and combat feeling better and tighter than they ever have in a Spidey game.

Marvels Spider Man Review spider man ps4 preview swing h 2018

One thing we can say is that for better or worse, is that the Peter Parker side of Spidey is a huge part of this game. Insomniac have clearly understood that Spider-Man’s secret identity is a vital part of the character, and have incorporated him into the gameplay.

There are sections where you’ll explore areas as Peter, learning more about other characters and even solving the occasional lightweight logic puzzle in the lab you work at, which nets you materials which can also be used to craft new equipment and suits. These parts of the game aren’t terrible, but they can interrupt the flow of all the web-slinging action, and – at times – come dangerous close to feeling like padding.

So too do the Mary Jane gameplay sections, which combine basic stealth and Uncharted style puzzles as our intrepid Daily Bugle reporter investigates the game’s larger mystery alongside Spider-Man.

These sections don’t take up a ton of time, and it’s nice to see MJ play a more active role in the story instead of being relegated to model/failed actress in distress, but you’ll likely once again be asking yourself why you aren’t webbing bad guys to walls and kicking them in the head at these points. Thankfully these areas are few and far between, and for the most part do come at times where the story could use something of a breather.

Marvels Spider Man Review 19eab5 Spider Man PS4 Iron Spider Rooftop

As the name of the game suggests, however, Spider-Man is the real star of the show here. Whether you’re out exploring the game’s massive open world and high-fiving New Yorkers on the street, or chasing down a stolen car while you listen to J. Jonah Jameson discuss your latest exploits on his unintentionally hilarious Alex Jonesesque podcast, Insomniac games have done an absolutely stunning job of creating a believable, lived-in world for the webhead to inhabit.

Simply put, Marvel’s Spider-Man is a triumph on almost every level. Even the occasional bit of padding in the story and some repetitive crimes can’t get in the way of a game that looks incredible, plays even better, and manages to tell one of the most exciting stories in a video game this year.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3ricWI0KHE?start=4&feature=oembed&w=500&h=281][youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3ricWI0KHE?start=4&feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

If you’re a fan of the webslinger, or even if you’re just after a truly polished and rewarding AAA experience to keep you busy for a week or two, you need this game. Spider-Man has honestly never been quite this amazing.

  • Weekend Project: Crank Out the Fun with This 3D Printed Manivelle Water Gun

Weekend Project: Crank Out the Fun with This 3D Printed Manivelle Water Gun

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The summer might be coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean you can’t soak your friends and family in a water fight. Spray the day away with this 3D printed Manivelle Water Gun designed by maker Hassan Nasser.

Many of us can recall our fond summer memories of neighborhood water fights, from the strong spray of a Super Soaker to the surprise splash of water balloons. While this summer season may be coming to a close, one maker named Hassan Nasser has shared an awesome 3D printing project that will keep you in the pool until the Autumn leaves have taken over.

His DIY Manivelle Water Gun is a crank-based water gun that is entirely made from 3D printed parts. It uses a crank mechanism to spin a fan and shoot out water from the head of the device. It doesn’t look like your average water gun, instead resembling some kind of leaf blower or handheld vacuum cleaner.

It’s unique, easy to make, and most importantly, will provide immense enjoyment for the waning summer days. Let’s take a closer look at this project and how you can make one yourself.

3D Printed Manivelle Water Gun: What You Need & How to Build it

In order to build this crank-based water gun yourself,  all you need is a 3D printer, some filament, and a hot glue gun. The designer has shared the STL files and assembly instructions on Instructables, where he details the role of each 3D printed part. Since this project will come in contact with a fair amount of water, it’s probably wise to use a material like PETG.

The Manivelle Water Gun consists of various 3D printed parts, including the fan, base, cover, head of the gun, handle, and even a 3D printed screw. The maker mentions that a metallic screw can be used to maintain the strength and durability of the crank gun.

Nasser showcases the assembly process for the Manivelle Water Gun through a screenshot of his Tinkercad design. All you have to do is connect all of the parts using a hot glue gun.

It’s a simple and easy project that will result in a lot of fun for the whole family. It might not have the pizazz or spray radius of an original Super Soaker, it’s still a great example of how 3D printing can lead to some fun in the sun. You can learn more about this project on Instructables, or download the STL files directly from MyMiniFactory.

  • FDM vs SLA – 2018 3D Printing Technology Shootout

FDM vs SLA – 2018 3D Printing Technology Shootout

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

Check out our FDM vs SLA Shootout. We simply explain the differences between these 3D printing technologies, and which to use for which application.

    FDM vs SLA: Explained

    Prusa i3 MK3
The Prusa i3 MK3 is one of the finest consumer 3D printers you can get. It uses FDM technology to get things printed. (Source: ALL3DP)

FDM is the abbreviation for Fused Deposition Modeling. In FDM, a strand of material (in this case: thermoplastics) is deposited in layers to create a 3D printed object. During printing, the plastic filament is fed through a hot extruder where the plastic gets soft enough that it can be precisely placed by the print head. The melted filament is then deposited layer by layer in the print area to build the workpiece.

There is a broad choice of FDM 3D printers for every budget, starting at a few hundred dollars. Filament spools are relatively inexpensive, starting from $25 per kilo. These factors made FDM printers so popular among makers and home users.

You can find the best FDM 3D printers here: 14 Best 3D Printers of Summer 2018

SLA is the abbreviation for Stereolithography Apparatus, or simply stereolithography. Like FDM, SLA is an additive method: Models are built layer by layer. SLA, however, uses a curable photopolymer – typically a liquid resin – that is hardened by applying focused light or UV light (this process is called curing). SLA printers usually build the models from top to bottom, the build platform lifts the model upwards, out of the resin bath.

The light source is either a laser or a digital projector (the technology is often called DLP – Digital Light Processing). Lasers „draw“ the layers; in DLP, an entire slice (a two-dimensional layer) of the model is projected at once into the resin bath.

Laser SLA printers are usually slower than DLP models because of the small surface of the laser beam. In DLP printers, each layer hardens faster as the entire image of one layer is projected onto the resin. Moreover, DLP projectors are more reliable and easier to maintain than customized laser systems as the projectors use the same technology as business and home cinema projectors. The printed models have to undergo a post-processing process, though.

Overall, there are less budget-friendy SLA machines than FDM 3D printers. Resin printers can often be found in a professional context, although the prices came down in the last years.

You can find the best SLA printers here: 25 Best Resin (DLP/SLA) 3D Printers of Summer 2018

    FDM vs SLA: Compared

FDM vs SLA: Materials and colors

FDM printers typically use PLA, PETG, or ABS filament. Most FDM printers can handle nylon, PVA, TPU and a variety of PLA blends (mixed with wood, ceramics, metals, carbon fiber, etc.) Filaments are available in various colors. Some manufacturers even offer a service to manufacture RAL colors by demand.

Most FDM printers can use standard filament rolls that are available in two standardized sizes (diameter: 1.75 or 2.85mm) from various sources. A few printers use proprietary filaments or filament boxes – these are typically more expensive than standard rolls but deliver better quality.

Owners of SLA printers have only a more limited pallet of resin materials. Quite often these are proprietary and cannot be exchanged between printers from different makers. The choice of colors is also limited. Formlabs, for example, only offers black, white, grey and clear resins. On the other hand, they offer more durable or highly specialized materials (i.e. dental, heat-resistant, or flexible resins) for industrial uses.

FDM vs SLA: Precision and Smoothness

SLA printers such as the Moonray print with high precision – you get details you wouldn't see in a FDM printed object (image: Sprintray, the creators of Moonray)
SLA printers print with high precision – you get details you won‘t see in most FDM-printed objects (image: Sprintray, the creators of Moonray)

In FDM printers, the printer’s resolution is a factor of the nozzle size and the precision of the extruder movements (X/Y axis). The precision and smoothness of the printed models is also influenced by other factors: As the bonding force between the layers is lower than in SLA printing and as the weight of upper layers may squeeze the layers below, a number of printing problems may ensue (e.g. warping, misalignment of layers, shifting of layers, shrinking of the lower parts – for more details see this article). These compromise the precision and surface smoothness.

SLA printers consistently produce higher resolution objects and are more accurate than FDM printers. The reason: The resolution is primarily determined by the optical spot size either of the laser or the projector – and that is really small. Moreover, during printing less force is applied to the model. This way, the surface finish is much smoother. SLA prints show details an FDM printer could never produce.

In fact, the fine details an SLA printer produces is the main reason why one would consider getting an SLA printer.

FDM vs SLA: Adhesion/removal after 3D printing

Adhesion to the print bed is a topic when using an FDM printer. Printed objects can be relatively easily removed – if the object sticks to the print bed, a palette knife will do.

In SLA printers, it can be difficult to remove the printed model from the print platform and often there is a lot of resin left on the platform that you have to remove using a palette knife – and this takes more effort than on an FDM printer. Industrial printer manufacturer Carbon3D even came up with a new idea: They use oxygen to create so-called “dead zone” around the printed model (the oxygen keeps the resin at the surface of the model from hardening).

    FDM vs SLA: Postprocessing

After printing on an FDM printer you need to remove supports (if the model has overhangs) and excess plastic either with your fingers or a cutting tool. Sanding helps to get smoother surfaces. More on supports here: 3D Printing Supports Guide – All You Need to Know

Models printed on an SLA printer such as the Form 1+ are covered in sticky resin that has to be removed in a bath of isopropyl alcohol. This is why you get rubber gloves with most SLA printers – to protect your fingers from the resin and alcohol. Depending on the model, supports may be required, too – removing them is as easy as with FDM printers.

FDM vs SLA: 3D printing costs

Consumable in FDM printers are nozzles and filament rolls. As already mentioned, most FDM printers use the same standardized filament rolls, prices for filament have been declining in the last years. 1 kg of PLA filament can be bought for $25, specialized filaments cost more.

In SLA printers, not only resin is consumed: In SLA printers, the resin tank has to be replaced after 2-3 liters of resin have been printed. The reason is that the tank gets smudged inside over time so the light source is no longer able to precisely project the image in the resin. Depending on the manufacturer and model, resin tanks will set you back around $40 to $80.

Another component that needs replacing from time to time is the build platform as it gets marred when the user removes the printed model; a platform can cost up to $100.

The resin is also costly: 1 liter of standard resin will set you back $ 80 to $150.

FDM vs SLA: Which One to Use?

In a nutshell: If high precision and smooth finish is your top priority and if cost is of no or of minor importance for a print job, use an SLA printer. If cost does play a role, use an FDM printer.

    When to use FDM

    When to use SLA

    • When intricate details and/or a very smooth surface finish is crucial

    • When strength and durability of the model is not crucial (models made from resin may suffer when exposed to the sun for extended periods)

    • For creating molds for casting to facilitate mass-production (e.g. by jewelry or toy makers)

When to use a 3D printing service

There’s a third option that can save you a lot of money. You don’t have to buy a 3D printer to get something printed, you can use a 3D printing service. You can get more information on 3D printing services in this article: 33 Best Online 3D Printing Services of 2018

Just don’t go too far down the gaming hole, as you might end up this like kid, who took things a bit too far after his mum got fed up with him playing video games all day every day.

Britta Hodge, from Sydney, Australia, insists her son Logan has become addicted to online gaming, and in particular has an obsession with the massively popular battle royale game, Fortnite.

Britta says the teenager plays all night long and only leaves his room to eat or to go to the bathroom. Which – horrific enough – is as close as you can get to the episode of South Park where they all become addicted to World of Warcraft and Cartman doesn’t leave the room.

Britta revealed in an interview with 9 News’ 60 Minutes that Logan has even lashed out at her when she’s tried to take his console away, Metro reports.

    She said:

It’s not as simple as taking the cord away and going, ‘Oh well, bad luck, you haven’t got the internet’.

Because the repercussions from that – angry, aggressive – we’ve had to call the police. I have been headbutted, I’ve had concussions.

Britta claims before she bought her son a PS4 two years ago, he was sporty and regularly went out with friends.

And Fortnite is just the latest of his addictions, he’s also been playing Minecraft, Call of Duty, Destiny and Ark.

Better not tell him about Zoo Tycoon, then.

Weekend Project: 3D Print Your Own Wind Turbine Model

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Want to teach your kids about the power of renewable energy? Or just want to build your own wind turbine replica? Then check out this 3D printed wind turbine model created by maker Luc Tellier.

If you’ve ever driven past a batch of towering wind turbines on a rural road, you know just how mesmerizing these larger-than-life structures really are. Wind power has become an integral part of the world’s renewable energy movement, and will only grow in prominence as society shifts towards more environmentally-friendly resources.

Obviously, a full-sized wind turbine is much too large to be created on your desktop 3D printer. But if you want to create a small-scale model that actually spins, maker and Thingiverse user Luc Tellier has created the perfect project for you.

The Eolienne Wind Turbine is a 3D printed educational model that has been produced at three different scales (1/100, 1/200, 1/400). Tellier created the model for his wife, who is teaching students about renewable energy and wind turbines. No, these models won’t provide any power to your home, but they are great for educational purposes or even decoration.

The maker recently shared his project to Thingiverse, so we thought we’d share an overview for all of you who are searching for a gust of creativity over the weekend. Here’s what you need to know in order to build your own 3D printed wind turbine model.

3D Printed Wind Turbine: What You Need & How to Build it

The STL files for the wind turbine model are available via Thingiverse. Some of the parts will require support structures and should be printed with 30 percent infill.

Other non-printed components that you need will depend on which scale you decide to print the model. For instance, the 1/100 model utilizes a 3V battery, while the middle sized one uses four AA batteries. The smallest model doesn’t have any power source, as the maker was unable to find a motor that fit inside of it.

You can use a variety of gear motors, which will also depend on the scale of the model. For the assembly process, the maker suggests using wood screws (3 x 16 mm) for the holes and head location that are implemented into the 3D printed parts. There are also LEDs added to the top of the wind turbine, providing an even more realistic feel to the scale model.

While these models can’t be used to power anything, the motors will simulate the impact that wind has on the turbine blades. Since Tellier’s project has already garnered so much interest, he’s now planning to create a version that is able to generate power in the near future.

If you want to learn more about the assembly process, how to optimize the printing process and what else you need to create your own 3D printed wind turbine, check out the project details on Thingiverse!

  • Extensions Capabilities in Twitch Chat

    Extensions Capabilities in Twitch Chat

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

    The Post

When you think of interacting with your favorite streamers on Twitch, you probably think of the energy in Twitch Chat. This is where all the action happens. It is where streamers and viewers interact with each other; where you cheer your favorite streamers with Bits and where memories are created.

Beyond Twitch Chat, Twitch Extensions allow developers to create experiences that increase the level of engagement in a channel by exposing opportunities to interact in new and exciting ways, so that viewers and streamers can connect like never before. Bridging the power of Extensions with the visibility of Chat in real time would give everyone in the channel an opportunity to be an active participant in the live stream.

Today we’re announcing the first of a series of features focused on providing developers with tools for increasing channel interaction, Extensions-in-Chat.

    What is Extensions-in-Chat?

The premise behind Extensions-in-Chat is fairly straightforward. By providing Extensions with direct access to Chat, developers can create even more powerful experiences for streamers and viewers to enjoy. Many Extensions are already doing this by connecting through IRC. By now leveraging the Send Extension Chat Message API, we’re able to bridge the functionality of an Extension with the visibility of a chat message — and utilize a single set of standardized interfaces. For instance, an Extension can now send an alert to Chat when the streamer achieves a new World of Warcraft all-time high Arena rating without the need to create an IRC bot.

To use Extensions-in-Chat, a developer can utilize the Send Extension Chat Message API, and with a few lines of code, enable their new or existing Extension to communicate with Chat.

    Enabling Extensions-in-Chat

We want developers to focus on building great experiences through Extensions — not the technology stack. For this reason, Extensions-in-Chat is an option in the developer’s Extension dashboard that can be enabled with a flag. Once this flag is enabled, minimal coding is needed to start communicating with Chat. Similarly, we’re providing streamers with an easy opt-out mechanism so that they can manage the Extensions with access to their Chat.

    Getting Started

    • Read the documentation
    • Login to dev.twich.tv
    • Navigate to Extension dashboard
    • Click on Extensions Capabilities nav option
    • Check the Chat Capabilities box
    • Update the Extension description with new features

With this release, developers enable streamers to post messages and notifications in the desktop channel chat so that everyone in the channel can see and interact with content in real time. We are currently working on mobile support for this feature.

    Also Available: Pop-out Extensions

In addition to Extensions-in-Chat, Pop-out Extensions are now available. For developers, this means that their responsive Extensions can now be undocked from the channel page much like the Twitch Chat pop-out. This gives developers much more real estate in the Extension to deliver messaging and experiences when a viewer chooses to undock it. Viewers and streamers can pop out panel and live config Extensions.

We’d love to hear what you think of Extensions-in-Chat V1 and are excited to see how you use this new feature to create increased interaction on streamers’ channels. Connect with us via @TwitchDev on Twitter or the Developer forums.

  • Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Is Now Backward Compatible On Xbox One

Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Is Now Backward Compatible On Xbox One

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Everyone remembers their first Call of Duty game, in the same way everyone remembers the first time they lost their… y’know.

But I digress, for me and many others who owned an Xbox 360, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the first foray into the world of the CoD franchise, and now, the original game is now backwards compatible on the Xbox One.

So, if you still own an original copy of the game, pop the disc in and bask in the nostalgia of Activision’s most important CoD entry.

The revelation CoD: MW2 is now playable on Xbox One was revealed by Microsoft’s Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, who made the announcement via Twitter.

In his post he wrote how the much-loved and heavily requested MW2 will be up and running on Microsoft’s current-gen console.

He also adds the previous player stats and DLC will remain intact too, meaning if you were a tenth level prestige (do you remember what daylight even looks like?) you won’t have to go through all the monotonous grinding just to attain your level.

    Hryb wrote:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is coming to Xbox One Backward Compatibility today (and it is on sale this week)

Although if you were that committed to the game in the first place, maybe starting from level one is what you secretly wanted. Are you a masochist by any chance?

Don’t rejoice too quickly though, if your account was previously banned for cheating (or being a horrible troll) it will remain banned, according to Hypebeast.

What made MW 2 such an important entry in the franchise was its ability to balance a strong online multiplayer community and single-player campaign at the same time. So if getting worked online by someone who is half your (IQ) age with weapons they’ve totally nerfed out, you can kick back and enjoy the single-player experience.

The CoD series has always attracted controversy and MW 2 was no different. Early in the campaign (if you didn’t turn on the sensitive content filter) you were placed on a mission where you went undercover to infiltrate a Russian terrorist organisation. To act the part you had to take part in a mass slaughter of innocent citizens at a Russian Airport.

The phrase ‘Remember, no Russian’, uttered right before you carry out the mass-shooting, became immortalised in the annals of gaming history.

Since the original release back in November 2009, MW 2 has been hailed as one of the greatest first-person shooters of all time. Within 24 hours of release, the game sold approximately 4.7 million copies in North America and the United Kingdom. It currently sits with a 94% score on Metacritic

With MW2 as the final compatibility, this now means all CoD games are playable on the Xbox One. So please, go forth and relive the Modern Warfare 2 era. A game which spawned a generation of campers, noob-tubers, trolls, racist five-year-olds and gamers so skilled it would make you take your control pad, smash it against the wall and then scream into the eternal abyss.

    Good memories.
