PlayStation Finally Fixes Baffling PSN Search Bar

    fbadvertisment

Sony is finally rolling out a better way to search for content on the PlayStation Network.

Some IGN PS4 owners have noticed a revised search function while browsing the store, which means Sony is finally addressing an issue many fans have had since they first brought their consoles home.

The new search function incorporates the same virtual keyboard PS4 owners have used to enter credit card information or search for friends on the PSN for years.

In addition to creating a faster search tool, users will enjoy expanded functionality, as the tool can be used to search for games by name as well as by genre, studio, or even publisher.

The old scrolling search bar is still appearing for many players, and it is unclear when Sony plans to roll the update out to all PS4 owners. Polygon reports players allegedly in the new PlayStation firmware beta are also able to see the update, so the update may end up being part of the upcoming PlayStation firmware update 6.0.

PS4 Game Deals This Week On The PlayStation Store In The US

    fbadvertisment

Last week’s PSN sale was massive, but now that it’s gone two new sales have taken its place. One is PS Plus Specials, which offers big discounts on games exclusively for PlayStation Plus members. The other is a publisher sale that temporarily brings down the prices of Rockstar’s games. Let’s dive in and see what games are discounted between now and September 4.

You don’t need a PS Plus membership to take advantage of this weeks’ Rockstar deals. Grand Theft Auto V, which is often on sale nowadays, is down to the particularly low price of $20. If you’re nostalgic for the PS2 days, you can pick up the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy for $18, or grab any of the games individually for $9 each. Also $9 are Bully and the decidedly more violent game Manhunt.

As for the PS Plus Specials, you’ll find plenty of recommendable games on the discounted list. Monster Hunter World is down to $36 this week, while Blizzard’s hero shooter Overwatch: Legendary Edition will only set you back $30. Prospective city planners can pick up Cities: Skylines for $20, and those interested in space exploration can grab Mass Effect: Andromeda for $7.50.

You can find more picks below, or head to Sony’s deals page to find more PS4 game discounts, along with a selection of PS3 and PS Vita deals as well.

Some links to supporting retailers are automatically made into affiliate links, and GameSpot may receive a small share of those sales.

  • The PlayStation 5 Codenamed “Erebus” May Have Been Discovered

The PlayStation 5 Codenamed “Erebus” May Have Been Discovered

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

    fbadvertisment

Sony might not be interested in talking about the PlayStation 5 just yet, but ResetEra user Gemusepizza points out that the latest version of the Unreal Engine 4 contains the PlayStation 5 code-name. The Unreal Engine 4 contains references to a console named “Erebus” alongside the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Additionally, they also found the abbreviation “TST2” also tied to what could be the next platform.

Erebus is a Greek deity who personified darkness. He is one of the first five beings in existence. Sony has traditionally code-named its consoles after Greek deities, which makes us believe that Erebus could be the PS5.

The PlayStation 4 was named Orbis, the PlayStation VR was code-named Morpheus, and the PS4 Pro was dubbed Neo internally. We know for a fact that Erebus is not Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox console because that device is code-named Scarlett.

You can see the image files right here to compare for yourself, but if this rumor proves to be true than we might be even closer to the next generation than we originally thought!

Though Xbox’s Phil Spencer casually mentioned that the next gen is already in the works, it was industry analyst Michael Pachter that is putting more of a timeline of the future of gaming. Pachter recently told GamingBolt, “I’m sure Microsoft intends to launch first, and I am equally certain that the new Xbox will be backwards compatible with any Xbox One X software.”

He then added, “I agree that it’s hard for Xbox One X purchasers, but they should know 4 years into a cycle that there is another one coming. My guess is that Microsoft intents to launch in 2020, but if they think is going to launch the PS5 then, they will launch early.”

What are you hoping to see from the next Xbox and the PlayStation 5? Sound off with your thoughts in the comment section below!

  • Xbox Gamers Are More Hardcore Than PlayStation, Says Microsoft

Xbox Gamers Are More Hardcore Than PlayStation, Says Microsoft

    fbadvertisment

Microsoft’s getting stomped globally by the PlayStation 4, but it believes that “hardcore gamers” gravitate towards the Xbox One ahead of Sony’s system. Aaron Greenberg, one of the marketing bigwigs at the Redmond firm, told IGN Italia at Gamescom 2018 that he believes the most engaged players prefer to game in green.

I notice the same and identical thing on my friends list and the data we have available suggests exactly that. Hardcore players, those who prefer the best gaming experience, have always been on our side, from the first Xbox to Xbox 360 and now with the Xbox One X. Looking at the numbers and results of the competition, we have a smaller installed base, but the attach rate and sales data for many games are much higher on Xbox. This is due to the fact that our userbase is made up of more hardcore gamers, and we return to the previous point: it is our relationship with the community that puts us in this position. We are at Gamescom especially for our users and the Xbox Fan Fest and we do similar activities all over the world. Along with Phil Spencer we are always very attentive to this aspect, it is really important to spend time with our fans and we will continue to do so, it is part of our way of being.

There’s no doubt that Microsoft, at the present moment, is much more openly engaging with fans and the media; the problem is that it often feels like it’s talking purely to maintain a semblance of relevance.

  • The Four Best Cross-Platform Multiplayer Games on PS4

The Four Best Cross-Platform Multiplayer Games on PS4

    fbadvertisment

There’s no doubt in our minds that the PS4 is the modern king of gaming. With a wide selection of great titles available, in genres as diverse as FPS, JRPG, Battle Royal, and others, there’s never been a better time to own what many claim is Sony’s best console since the original Playstation.

Despite this, we’ve all got friends who have yet to see the light, whether they’ve been loyal followers of Nintendo or Microsoft for years, or have spent a ton customizing their rig and don’t see the need for a console. We don’t need to severe ties and create bad blood by ending these relationships (that’s what killstreaks are for!), so it’s fortunate that there are several great games on the market right now that we can enjoy with our friends, no matter their platform of choice.

    Fortnite
Available on: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC

A global phenomenon that’s taken the gaming world by storm, Epic Game’s online juggernaut has grown to more than 125 unique players, with more than 40 million logging on at least once per month to play. Offering both a battle royal and co-op survival mode, Fortnite draws players in with gameplay that’s smooth and simple, but capable of immense depth, offering a host of different strategies to help, or hinder, your fellow players. Currently in its fifth season of DLC, Fortnite is an online experience the likes of which few have ever matched, no matter your preferred system.

    Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Available on: PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC

First introduced in 2015 to a lukewarm reception and modest sales, R6S has become one of the most unbelievable comeback stories, and one of the best multiplayer FPS’s, in gaming history, boasting over 35 million players as of June 2018. In contrast to the Call of Duty series, R6:S requires players to work together as a team and implement a decisive strategy to obtain victory. With the ability to shoot through nearly every surface in the game, and with players having to spectate for the remainder of the match upon death, R6S, with its slower, more tactical approach, is a breath of fresh air in a genre oversaturated with adrenaline and Michael Bay moments.

Aside from dominating the living room, R6S has begun to move into the esports arena, sponsoring incredible teams, sporting the best gear, and offering huge cash prizes to the teams who prove their skill.

    Diablo III
Available on: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC (Coming to Nintendo Switch Q3 2018)

The latest from a series long regarded as one of the best in gaming history, Diablo III is another amazing game that nearly crashed at the get-go. Plagued by bugs, and a nearly reviled auction house, when it launched in 2012, Diablo III has evolved to become one of the best western RPGs on the market. While originating on the PC, Diablo III has implemented a control scheme that’s simple, responsive, and effective no matter what platform you play on. With Blizzard’s Battle.net service, players can drop in and out of co-op sessions seamlessly, allowing you to play with friends for tough areas before striking out on your own if you so choose. The only downside is that, regardless of system, Diablo III requires you to be always-online, even for its single player component, due to Blizzard’s DRM policies. Despite this drawback, and a rocky start, Diablo III is an excellent dark fantasy RPG, that more than lives up to the standard set by its predecessors.

    Grand Theft Auto Online
Available On: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC

If the fact that it’s the fastest-selling entertainment product in history doesn’t tell you all you need to know about Rockstar Games’ masterpiece, there’s not much else we can say to convince you. With over $6 billion in revenue, GTAV is also one of the best entries in the long-running GTA series. Offering the ability to shift between three distinct and unforgettable protagonists, and the ability to shoot, punch, detonate, drive, swim, and fly through any obstacles in their path, GTAV elevates the zany, offensive, and downright insane open world gameplay the series is known for to new heights of extreme. The game’s online mode allows players to share in that mayhem with others all over the world, and is constantly being updated with new content. Robbing banks never felt so good.

  • Stream to Twitch with the push of a button

Stream to Twitch with the push of a button

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Stream your video gaming exploits to the internet at the touch of a button with the Twitch-O-Matic. Everyone else is doing it, so you should too.

Twitch-O-Matic: Raspberry Pi Twitch Streaming Device – Weekend Hacker #1804

Some gaming consoles make it easy to stream to Twitch, some gaming consoles don’t (come on, Nintendo). So for those that don’t, I’ve made this beta version of the “Twitch-O-Matic”. No it doesn’t chop onions or fold your laundry, but what it DOES do is stream anything with HDMI output to your Twitch channel with the simple push of a button!

    eSports and online game streaming

Interest in eSports has skyrocketed over the last few years, with viewership numbers in the hundreds of millions, sponsorship deals increasing in value and prestige, and tournament prize funds reaching millions of dollars. So it’s no wonder that more and more gamers are starting to stream live to online platforms in order to boost their fanbase and try to cash in on this growing industry.

    Streaming to Twitch

Launched in 2011, Twitch.tv is an online live-streaming platform with a primary focus on video gaming. Users can create accounts to contribute their comments and content to the site, as well as watching live-streamed gaming competitions and broadcasts. With a staggering fifteen million daily users, Twitch is accessible via smartphone and gaming console apps, smart TVs, computers, and tablets. But if you want to stream to Twitch, you may find yourself using third-party software in order to do so. And with more buttons to click and more wires to plug in for older, app-less consoles, streaming can get confusing.

    Enter Tinkernut.

    Side note: we ❤ Tinkernut

We’ve featured Tinkernut a few times on the Raspberry Pi blog – his tutorials are clear, his projects are interesting and useful, and his live-streamed comment videos for every build are a nice touch to sharing homebrew builds on the internet.

Tinkernut Raspberry Pi Zero W Twitch-O-Matic

So, yes, we love him. [This is true. Alex never shuts up about him. – Ed.] And since he has over 500K subscribers on YouTube, we’re obviously not the only ones. We wave our Tinkernut flags with pride.

    Twitch-O-Matic

With a Raspberry Pi Zero W, an HDMI to CSI adapter, and a case to fit it all in, Tinkernut’s Twitch-O-Matic allows easy connection to the Twitch streaming service. You’ll also need a button – the bigger, the better in our opinion, though Tinkernut has opted for the Adafruit 16mm Illuminated Pushbutton for his build, and not the 100mm Massive Arcade Button that, sadly, we still haven’t found a reason to use yet.

    Adafruit massive button

    “I’m sorry, Dave…”

For added frills and pizzazz, Tinketnut has also incorporated Adafruit’s White LED Backlight Module into the case, though you don’t have to do so unless you’re feeling super fancy.

    The setup

The Raspberry Pi Zero W is connected to the HDMI to CSI adapter via the camera connector, in the same way you’d attach the camera ribbon. Tinkernut uses a standard Raspbian image on an 8GB SD card, with SSH enabled for remote access from his laptop. He uses the simple command Raspivid to test the HDMI connection by recording ten seconds of video footage from his console.

Tinkernut Raspberry Pi Zero W Twitch-O-Matic

One lead is all you need

Once you have the Pi receiving video from your console, you can connect to Twitch using your Twitch stream key, which you can find by logging in to your account at Twitch.tv. Tinkernut’s tutorial gives you all the commands you need to stream from your Pi.

    The frills

To up the aesthetic impact of your project, adding buttons and backlights is fairly straightforward.

Tinkernut Raspberry Pi Zero W Twitch-O-Matic

    Pretty LED frills

To run the stream command, Tinketnut uses a button: press once to start the stream, press again to stop. Pressing the button also turns on the LED backlight, so it’s obvious when streaming is in progress.

    The tutorial

For the full code and 3D-printable case STL file, head to Tinketnut’s hackster.io project page. And if you’re already using a Raspberry Pi for Twitch streaming, share your build setup with us. Cheers!

Auditions are now open for new game show from Twitch Studios: Stream On

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Today, we’re excited to announce “Stream On,” a new game show from Twitch Studios! Premiering in March 2018, the program will elevate some of the best and brightest up-and-coming streamers. Starting today, Twitch Partners are invited to audition for participation.

Maybe you’ve been streaming a long time and are looking for that one last push to take you into a full-time streaming career, or maybe you feel like you’re just getting started, and need a boost to reach more people and show them your skills! Either way, Stream On might be just the opportunity you need to shine. Right now, Twitch Studios is looking for the most entertaining, competitive streamers, with great personality and lots of potential. Video audition submissions are open now on the Twitch submission page, and full contest rules can be found here.

Stream On contestants will face challenges designed to test important streamer skills, and be evaluated by a panel of Twitch judges. Viewers in Twitch chat will also play an important role in choosing who advances and who is eliminated at each stage of the friendly competition. The show will take place across multiple channels as contestants compete throughout each week from their home streaming setup, and the action will be punctuated by a weekly recap and elimination show from Twitch Studios.

Ultimately, the contestant who best shows off their ability to entertain, lead a community, and be a pacesetter in the streaming space will emerge victorious, and be awarded a grand prize of $5,000 per month for a year — a total of $60,000 — in order to help take their streaming career to the next level.

As a contestant, viewer, or Twitch community member, we hope you’ll stay tuned and take part in this pilot season of Twitch Studios newest effort to elevate streamers. Be sure to follow /Twitch and @Twitch_Studios on Twitter for updates!

You can view the full official ruleset here.

    FAQ

Would I need to move or appear in person in order to compete?

No! We may ask contestants to join us for a trip or two, but the competition takes place online, and every streamer competes from their own streaming setup.

How will this affect my normal streaming schedule?

The competition is built to complement and expand, not replace, your current streaming strategy. However, streamers should keep in mind that participation may require changes and efforts that may conflict with their usual schedule or style, and be willing to invest with flexibility in the competition.

If I’m not a Partner quite yet, should I still audition?

This competition is catered toward streamers who are right on the cusp of making streaming full-time a possibility. Streamers who are below the threshold of partnership might not benefit much from participating, and would be at a disadvantage in challenges. We hope all interested streamers will use Achievements to follow the path to partnership and be able to join us for any future partner opportunities like Stream On! In the meantime, also be sure to check out other opportunities available from Twitch Studios at link.twitch.tv/submit.

I’m a big Partner who streams full time, should I audition?

As above, Stream On is built to support streamers who are just on the brink of making their streaming a full time career. Any partner can audition, but be advised that the selection committee will be more likely to choose smaller partners who they feel can benefit most from the additional exposure that Stream On can offer. LIRIK, if you’re reading this, please don’t apply.

I see on the submission form that only entrants from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. can enter. Why?

Stream On is a pilot, and we want to make sure we can truly support everyone we invite to audition. As it relates to budget, translation, logistics, and more, unfortunately this is the widest range of regions we can support for this time around.
