  • Remote Play on PS4 and PS Vita – Step by Step Guide + Use a Vita as a second PS4 controller

Remote Play on PS4 and PS Vita – Step by Step Guide + Use a Vita as a second PS4 controller

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Maybe you’re picking up a PlayStation 4 today (and you should, because it’s a pretty damned cool console), and one of the games you happen to pick up supports 2 player’s on screen at the same time. Maybe you don’t have a second controller, but your buddy, wife, girlfriend, dog, brother or sister wants to get in on some two-player action. If you have a Vita, you’re sorted.

    Friends

    To quote:

Sony has released a simple Step by Step guide for those looking to use Remote Play via their PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4.

The tutorial is rather brief, but is easy to follow and walks users through basic the process of getting the service up and running between the two pieces of hardware.

Remote Play on PS4 and PS Vita – Step by Step Guide

Pairing your PS4 and your PS Vita for Remote Play is quick and easy – and you’ll only have to do it once for the two systems to stay connected.

As you know, you can use Remote Play to beam the game that’s playing on the PS4 to a PlayStation Vita. One problem with that is that it has to be the same PSN account on the Vita as the PS4. Not really too much of an issue, though. Just use remote play (make sure you’re connecting the vita to the Ps4 directly) and take over the session. Then, with the controller, sign in as a guest or secondary profile.

Aaaaand Bob’s your uncle. The Vita can be used as one controller, while the actual controller functions as player two. I played a whole lot of LEGO: Marvel yesterday with a friend doing this, and as long as the Vita was connected directly, it worked a treat. Response, for a game like Marvel, worked perfectly. Other games at launch that’ll work this way include Knack, and Call of Duty: Ghosts. And probably a few sports titles.

There are some things you’ll have to get used to, like using the rear-touchpad on the Vita as the L2, L3, R2 and R3 buttons, but it’s a good temporary solution until you can pick up another controller. You’ll also forgo any sort of rumble on the Vita.

It’s a bit obvious, really – but If you’ve just blown your cash on a PS4 and don’t have the cash for a second controller at the moment, but you have a Vita gathering dust in your cupboard, put it to some good use.

  • Gran Turismo 6 – How to get to Lunar Racing Mission

Gran Turismo 6 – How to get to Lunar Racing Mission

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

„We had been working for a while on simulating the stars properly in the game, and the moon was being recreated very accurately. While we were working on that, the idea just came out of the blue,“ recalled Polyphony president and series creator Kazunori Yamauchi, when we caught up with him at the game’s launch in Ronda, Spain, earlier this week.

„We thought, ‚wouldn’t it be interesting if you could drive on the surface of the moon?‘ So we did some research into the lunar rover and thought we should make it available in the game to drive.

„It was something we knew we could do with the technology that we had. It was really born out of curiosity. And if you remember in the opening movie, the opening music is Rachmaninoff and the theme of that piece is ‚the moon‘. Things just connected one after another.

Considering the emphasis Polyphony places on realism and precision, transporting GT’s trademark action into zero-G was no small undertaking. The same eye for minute detail that the studio would apply to any earth-bound automobile would need to be applied to the lunar rover too.

„Researching the geography of the moon’s surface and going back and looking at the actual routes that Apollo 15 took was actually a lot of work!“ insisted Yamauchi-san.

„It was a difficult process but we did as accurately as we could possibly manage.“

GT’s lunar adventure isn’t the only space-age inclusion in Polyphony’s latest. One of the most exciting additions to the series formula in Gran Turismo 6 is the Vision GT project. The studio has teamed up with a number of leading car manufacturers, including Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, to create concept models offering a unique insight into the future of automotive design. These pioneering designs will duly be fully drivable in the game.

„I think in terms of the beauty of the cars and the driving experience, the cars that are going to be released as part of the Vision GT concept, they pack amazing possibilities in terms of the enjoyment that people will experience.“

Back on the subject of the moon, while a huge amount of effort was put into making GT’s first extra-terrestrial outing both fun to play and a genuine simulation it’s, as Kazunori puts it, a „side dish“ – „and the main course is just about to be served.“

And what a feast awaits when the game arrives on PlayStation 3 today.

„The objectives of Gran Turismo are very simple actually. We want people to enjoy the beauty of cars, we want people to enjoy driving, and we want people to enjoy the beauty of the environments. Those are things that have remained the same throughout the series, and it’s the same for GT6.“

  • Twitch on PlayStation 4 – 7 Tips for New PS4 Broadcasters Detailed

Twitch on PlayStation 4 – 7 Tips for New PS4 Broadcasters Detailed

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s been less than a week since PS4 launched with Twitch broadcasting functionality, and the feedback we’ve been getting from new broadcasters has been phenomenal!

To help new streamers ease into the Twitch community – which is already 45 million members strong – here are some tips for first-time broadcasters:

    • Be a curator of conversations: Drive conversation with your viewers. Talk about everything and don’t just focus your conversation about the game or games in general. Talk about life, pop culture, music and everything in between.

    • Go live longer than an hour: It might sound shocking at first, but Twitch is long-form entertainment. Our broadcasters stream for hours, so find a sweet spot and before you know it you’ll be rocking a 24-hour broadcast in celebration of a new game release.

    • Find a genre: When laying the foundation for your channel, don’t feel the need to be the best at every game. However, if you are good at one genre (FPS, Platforming, Stealth…), focus on that until you get the swing for engaging between chat and gaming at the same time. It can be a challenge to be good at both, but hang in there – you’ll eventually kick off those training wheels.

    • Have a regular broadcast schedule: This way your viewers can become aware of when a broadcast will happen. You want to post this schedule everywhere you can. The more informed the community is with your shows, the more people will show up.

    • Try to have a camera and mic on: People want to see and hear you! There’s something very special about having a broadcaster looking right at the camera and talking directly to viewers, live. Plus, this will increase your viewership.

    • Engage in the Twitch Universe: Broadcasting is built around community, whether it’s your community or someone else’s, so join other channels that you share a common interest in. This will give you crossover viewership.

    • Authentic voice is essential: Go out there have fun! The more authentic your approach is, the more your viewers will connect with you.

  • How Light Comes Alive in Dying Light on PS4 / PlayStation 4

How Light Comes Alive in Dying Light on PS4 / PlayStation 4

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

To quote: Hi, I’m Maciej Jamrozik, the Lead Technical Artist at Techland, developer of the upcoming first-person, action survival-horror game Dying Light.

Light and shadow play a crucial role in Dying Light. They affect not only the gameplay and its day-and-night cycle, but also the visuals.

This video illustrates how the game uses a physically-based lighting system, which means that light is generated in accordance to the actual laws of physics.

This in turn assures that lighting looks convincing and cohesive, regardless of the conditions and surroundings. It’s especially important as Dying Light features a variety of locations and environments, from open spaces to claustrophobic rooms, as well as a range of weather conditions and changing time of day.

One of the most important parameters of indirect lighting is „roughness,“ which defines the level of smoothness and dullness of a surface.

Implementing our new physics model eliminated the limitation of using only preset groups of materials, which translates to much more varied and faithful representations of materials in the game. Our artists now have full freedom over the level of roughness on objects, and can save the result in a form of texture.

On PS4, we use the console’s additional horsepower to generate dynamic reflections. Similarly, they make use of the „roughness“ to diffuse and reduce the impact of the specular reflection. It helps render the given material in the most realistic way possible.

Dying Light boasts a dynamic weather system, together with a real-time passage of time. That’s why indirect lighting data, which is stored in so called environment light probes, has to change according to the current weather and the time of day.

These two factors can change independently. That’s why we compute the Spherical Harmonix function offline for all weather conditions and times of day, and then it is dynamically interpolated in the game.

The physically based lighting model influenced what all wet surfaces look like. When it’s raining, wet surfaces get increasingly shiny through the modification of the roughness parameter. We emphasize that weather conditions, like time of day, change gradually, and it applies also to all wet surfaces. As a result, a surface becomes wet only if it is actually exposed to rain.

Another field directly improved by the new physics model is water. It’s a crucial feature, since Dying Light allows the player to swim and dive. Water in the game can have varied levels of transparency, which affects light diffusion.

Moreover, water has an effect on all objects immersed in it. We modify the parameter of roughness so that they look wet, but only to the point of immersion. The rest above the water level remains dry.

All the above improvements, and many other changes, are to make sure that Dying Light will deliver an unprecedented visual fidelity that will surprise you with its level of realism. Next year, when you’re leaping between roofs and trying to lose the zombie horde behind you, take a moment to appreciate all the great lighting effects around you.

Just don’t stop for too long – zombie bites hurt!

    DualShock 4 (DS4) PlayStation 4 / PS4 Controller Teardown, Details

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Following up on the PlayStation 4 / PS4 Teardown, today frank26080115 has made available a teardown in pictures of the DualShock 4 (DS4) PlayStation 4 / PS4 controller and details below.

    To quote: DualShock 4

    Hardware

    Teardown photo album: imgur.com/a/ytRW5

The USB port and LED are on one separate board, connected using a flat flexible cable, this cable is connected to a vertical FFC connector that does not have a locking mechanism.

The touchpad sensor is also detachable, connected using a flat flexible cable, this cable is connected to the main PCB using a connector that has a flip-up locking mechanism.

The speaker is not removable and it connects to the main PCB using some raised contacts.

    The battery is 3.65V 1000mAH Li-ion.

Main microcontroller is a Spansion MB9BF002, a ARM Cortex M3 core, BGA package. The reset and SWD signals might be exposed to test points, I am not sure.

The Bluetooth module shows „8LA18366“ and „GS-WCM-01“ (or maybe it’s „GS-WCN-01“) and „VR2.0“. There is also a QR code that I can’t decipher yet. There are a lot of test points near it.

There’s a chip marked with „BD9200“ (in QFN 32 pin footprint) that might be a PMIC because it has some thick traces around it, plus a big inductor. One of the pins near it read 6V, might be for the motor.

There’s a shiny small square chip left of the left analog stick, it is marked with „7710“ „325A1“, I have no idea what this is, but there’s some differential signals coming out of it, it might be USB, the activity stops when I disconnect the USB cable. I think this is connected to the USB port. I suspect this is a OTG chip.

There’s a rectangular (maybe LGA) chip on the bottom side on the left, marked with „134“ „A1322“ „333“, possibly a sensor. It’s got some sort of latch signal around it, or maybe it’s a weird clock. It’s slow and doesn’t seem like a bus. Or it could be a shift register and it’s reading blank because I’m not pressing buttons.

There’s a QFN 32 pin chip marked with „WM18016“ (the M could be a N, the 6 could be a G) „36A0LM6“ dead center on the bottom side of the PCB. It has a sine wave logo on it (possibly Wolfson Microelectronics). It is near the audio stuff but it is also near where all the buttons connect. There are 5 test points near it. It appears to be communicating with SPI with constant activity. There’s also two resistors that look like I2C pull-up resistors, and there appears to be constant I2C traffic.

Some buttons are active low, some are active high (maybe only the thumbstick push buttons). The sheet of flexible circuit for the buttons are active low.

  • PS4 Backwards Compatibility for PS3 Games

PS4 Backwards Compatibility for PS3 Games

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

It has been officially confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will not support PlayStation 3 games natively. This means that any retail (i.e. disc-based) or digitally downloaded games from the Playstation Network will not be playable on the new console due to the x86 architecture.

In a roundtable with journalists after the PlayStation 4 reveal, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios, elaborated further on the question of backwards compatibility.

In the IGN article linked above states:

„In a roundtable conversation with journalists, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios noted that PS3 games of both the retail and downloadable variety will not be compatible with PlayStation 4, at least not natively. In other words, your PS3 discs won’t work in the new console nor will the games you downloaded.

There’s a catch, though: emulation. The PlayStation 3 doesn’t read PlayStation 2 discs (at least not anymore), but it can play PS2 games via the PlayStation Store in an emulated environment. Yoshida concedes that this is possible for PlayStation 4 supporting legacy PlayStation consoles as well. Indeed, the Gaikai presentation during PlayStation 4’s reveal touched on this “everything, everywhere” mentality. But for now, downloaded PS3 games won’t work “unless, somehow, some games work on emulation. And the easiest thing, technically, would be to make PSone games work on PS4 with emulation. But we’re not talking about our emulation plans as yet.”

In short, “There are two ways [to play legacy content]: emulation or cloud services [from Gaikai]. But native support [of digital games from PS3], no, sorry. It doesn’t work.”

    Gaikai and Cloud Streaming

Based off of statements made at Sony’s PS4 reveal event, it is believed that Sony will be using Gaikai’s capabilities to provide access to games from previous PlayStation consoles through Gaikai’s cloud streaming capabilities.[1]

At this point, it is not known whether this will require players to re-purchase games they already own, although this seems quite likely.

Visit IGN’s PS4 Gaikai Integration wiki to learn more.

    Communications

Sony has confirmed that users across the PlayStation Network will be able to communicate back and forth on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. The catch is that only text-based communications will be delivered across the platforms. Any and all voice or video messages will go undelivered between the two consoles.

PlayStation 4/PS Vita bundle coming in December

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

It looks like Europe is getting a PlayStation 4 and PS Vita bundle -called the ‘Ultimate Bundle’- this Holiday.

    icon_xl (7)

A price for the PS4/PS Vita bundle was not mentioned. The PS4 retails for $400, while the PS Vita currently sells for $200, making a price point for the bundle in the mid-$500 range likely.

In the UK at least, Sony will also run a £2.5 million TV campaign for the PS Vita this holiday called „The Best Way to Play.“ The advertisement will reportedly promote Remote Play and Media Molecule’s adventure game Tearaway.

  • Polygon caught ‚lying‘ about PS4 on their Xbox One stream

Polygon caught ‚lying‘ about PS4 on their Xbox One stream

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

As spotted by Jeremy Conrad from ‚Furious Fanboys‘, gaming site Polygon was ‚lying‘ about the use of TV remotes on a PS4 on their Xbox One stream today.

They said the PS4 “does not use remotes at all”, when mentioning an advantage that theXbox One has over Sony’s console.

However, you can actually use any TV remote with the PS4, as long as your TV supports HDMI-CEC.

    Here’s the Furious Fanboys article:

This morning, gaming site Polygon is doing a twelve-hour live stream showing off the Xbox One. Right before the comical demo of Dead Rising 3, where most of the voice commands didn’t seem to work and they couldn’t even snap Internet Explorer correctly, a panel of editors discussed the system that the site seems to be carrying so much water for.

During this panel, site Editor-in-Chief Chris Grant stated a couple times that one advantage the Xbox One has over the PS4 is that the Xbox One supports remote controls and the PS4 does not. He even used the example that mom would want to use the Xbox One over the PS4 because she wouldn’t want to use the Dual Shock 4 to watch a movie. Later, he used the example of Netflix on how the Xbox One is a superior choice over the PS4 for Netflix because of remote support.

You can see the first statement about remotes at the 5:30 mark in this clip. A direct quote, about the PS4, is “it does not use remotes at all”. The Netflix comment is at the end.

The problem with these statements is that they are lies.

The PlayStation 4, like the Slim PS3 before it, fully supports HDMI-CEC controls. While every TV manufacturer calls it something different, virtually every major television that is relatively recent supports it. Samsung, Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, LG, Hitachi, Toshiba, Philips, and component manufacturers like Onkyo all support this Consumer Electronics Control feature of HDMI. Due to HDMI-CEC, you can use your normal television remote control to operate the PS4.

While the Xbox One does support an IR-Blaster, most devices have moved away from that because HDMI-CEC is simply more convenient due to being able to use your normal TV remote for control.

I even made a video to demonstrate this:

    (WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW)

Of course, I then tweeted this video to Chris Grant wanting to know why he decided to lie to viewers about the PS4:

Naturally, after being pointed out how wrong he was and how he was indeed lying to his readers, he blocked me:

The moral of this story is not to blatantly lie to your readers or viewers. Especially with something like this. You will be called out on it…

  • PS4’s secondary processor and extra GDDR3 RAM chip revealed

PS4’s secondary processor and extra GDDR3 RAM chip revealed

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

The good part of the teardown of a product is that we know much more about it than when looking only at the „official“ specs tables. This is what happened exactly with the Playstation 4 showing a secondary processor and extra RAM chips that weren’t on any „official“ specs list.

    icon_xl
The secondary processor seems a low-power ARM one and the RAM is GDDR3 of 2 Gigabits (256 MB). The specific functions are yet to be discovered but experts think that both could be used to liberate the main processos and RAM from secondary task such as processes in the background (standby, downloads etc…).

    According to vr-zone.com:

The newly revealed components include a low-power processor and 2 Gb (gigabits, not gigabytes) of GDDR3 SDRAM memory, stacking up to a total of 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM. The auxiliary processor, which is known as “SCEI CXD90025G”, has been revealed as a low-power ARM solution–however its specific functions aren’t known yet.

There are many ways that the SCEI CXD90025G could compliment the PlayStation 4′s robust environment, and the gaming community has speculated a few interesting possibilities.

Since it’s a low-power processor, it’s likely to be associated with background functions like standby processes and downloads. Another guess is that it might be utilized for DRM, and some have suggested the ARM core processor allocates resources for the PS4′s automatic gameplay recording feature as well.

The unveiled processor might also help out with the PS4′s transitions from gaming to other apps, and is likely to aid in preserving game progress when switching to other apps or menus. It may also have something to do with saving the current state of the console in sleep mode–not to mention the downloads and updates during the system’s slumber.

    Playstation 4 Thermal Images

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

With today being the launch of the Sony Playstation 4, I figured I’d take some infrared shots of it in action. Using the new FLIR E8 Thermal Camera with MSX®, I’ve got some great shots to look at. Remember, computers and electronics get hot, but this will show you how the PS4 handles and vents that heat.

„Bottom“ side of the Playstation 4 Just after unpacking and running the firmware update.

„Top Side“ of the PS4, just after unpacking and running firmware update (on for about 5-7 minutes at this point). Note that the top part of the PS4 in this picture has a different emissivity than the lower, so, the temp measurements on the top won’t be as accurate.

The Playstation 4 has been on for about 10-12 minutes at this point as I move around the menus, and start adding my PSN profile.

This is after 5 minutes of standby, with a controller plugged in for charge.

The top part of the PS4 after about 10 minutes of Killzone.

The „bottom“ side after 10 minutes of Killzone.

Here you can see the vents heating up to around 121º F

30 minutes later, the top surface of the PS4 is still holding around 114º F degrees at its peak.

And finally, the bottom side of the Playstation is at 121º F.

The vents however, are now up to 143º F after 30 minutes of running Killzone, which is totally a reasonable spec!

UPDATE: A few folks asked for thermal of it lying flat – these two photos are about after 20 minutes of playing Killzone.

Highest temp read on the vent is around 126º F, a little cooler than when it was vertical, but the play time was a little bit shorter. I’ll be taking more photos as the weekend progresses, so keep checking back!

    UPDATE 2:

The hottest the vents have gotten in its flat position while playing Killzone, appear to be around 138/140º F, so a few degrees cooler, but close to where it was when it was vertical. The top surface still stays at a consistent 110-114º F.

UPDATE 3: Been playing for over 3 hours now, with the PS4 comfortable in my home theater cabinet in its flat position. The Playstation remains a little under the temperature it was when I was around 30 minutes in, which is around ~133ºF/56ºC.

  • South Park: The Stick of Truth ESRB Rating released

South Park: The Stick of Truth ESRB Rating released

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

It should be no surprise that South Park: The Stick of Truth is chock full o‘ filth-flarn-flarn-filth-flarn and hellbent for an M-for-Mature rating. It’s still fun to hear the ESRB reading the dialogue aloud from its fainting couch.

The game includes several instances of mature humor and sexual material: one extended sequence depicts characters getting anally probed by alien creatures

    Why, I do declare …

Another sequence (in an abortion clinic) depicts doctors using a vacuum to perform procedures on male characters

    Well, I never!

The words „f**k,“ „sh*t,“ „a*shole,“ and „f*ggot“ can be heard in the dialogue.

    Description from ESRB Website:

Content Descriptors: Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Violence

Rating Summary: This is a role-playing adventure game based on the animated South Park TV show. Players assume the role of a new kid in town who embarks on various quests with other boys in the neighborhood. Players can engage in turn-based combat, selecting attacks from a menu screen. Players use various weapons (swords, baseball bats, hammers), magic spells and melee attacks during fights; blood-splatter effects sometimes occur. Cutscenes occasionally depict “cartoony” characters dismembered or decapitated. The game includes several instances of mature humor and sexual material: one extended sequence depicts characters getting anally probed by alien creatures; another sequence (in an abortion clinic) depicts doctors using a vacuum to perform procedures on male characters; one level takes place inside the rectum/colon of a character (sex toys, random objects and fecal matter appear in the level)—all sequences are depicted in a cartoony and over-the-top manner. Characters are occasionally depicted nude (e.g., breasts, buttocks, male genitalia); one extended sequence depicts an out-of-focus couple having sex in the background; as players engage in turn-based battle in the foreground, sexual moaning sounds/dialogue is heard. During the course of the game, drug paraphernalia can be seen strewn around a methamphetamine lab. The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” “a*shole,” and “f*ggot” can be heard in the dialogue.

We all know the Series, and we all would know it would and in an M Rating, or what do you believe. Leave your comments below!
