A Sneak Peek at the Cool Animations of the Back to the Future Special Pack for PowerWash Simulator

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

Hey, Washers! Jess from FuturLab here to give you the low-down on PowerWash Simulator’s heaviest collaboration yet — the Back to the Future Special Pack! We’ve teamed up with the folks at Universal Games and Digital Platforms to transport you back in time onto various sets from the iconic “Back to the Future” trilogy from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment.

And, when given the chance to visit the past, you do what any person with a superior knowledge of future technology would do… powerwash! Well, introducing the world to rock ‘n’ roll was already taken!

As well as saving the Hill Valley Clocktower (from muck, this time), you will also get to spray down Doc Brown’s Van, the Time Machine, the Holomax Theater and Doc’s Time Train. Plus, you can collect 10 electrifying new achievements.

This Special Pack features some of our coolest animations to date, so to learn more about how we brought the timelessness of “Back to the Future” to life, I was joined by FuturLab Junior Animator Alannah Meek to share some of her secrets here with you all.

Bringing the Back to the Future Special Pack to Life

Environmental storytelling has always been a core aspect of PowerWash Simulator. From early on, clues were scattered like breadcrumbs throughout each map, adding to the narrative and breathing life into the setting.

The Back to the Future Special Pack represents the next evolution of animation in PowerWash Simulator. Fittingly, alongside this celebration of cinema, we’re bringing you our most cinematic animations yet. From ticking cogs to flying trains, this Special Pack has it all.

PowerWash Simulator Back to the Future Special Pack Screenshot

“The Back to the Future Special Pack has more animation than its predecessors,” explains Meek. “Being able to interact with and wash all these moving parts brings so much more life and interactivity to the pack, allowing you to experience the world of Back to the Future to a greater extent and appreciate the finer details from the films,”

    Creating the Hill Valley Clocktower

The Hill Valley Clocktower played a pivotal role in the first “Back to the Future” movie. You’ll find it nestled in a fully explorable Hill Valley Town Square. Although 30 years has passed since the place was struck by lightning, it sure looks like it still needs some major TLC!

PowerWash Simulator Back to the Future Special Pack Screenshot

“Animating the clock mechanism involved a lot of research into how clock towers work and finding reference videos of the moving parts as the room in the film is only shown for a short time and dimly lit,” says Meek. “I also had to work closely with the artist to make sure the models would be functional and understand how all the individual pieces interact with one another. We made sure that the clock tower mechanism is broken as the clock tower has been struck by lightning, so eagle-eyed players will notice the cogs attached to the hands on the clock are failing to interact properly.”

    Building The Holomax Theater

In “Back to the Future Part II,” the Holomax Theater captured the imaginations of viewers as a futuristic way to sink your teeth into a movie. Players can put themselves in Marty McFly’s sneakers to get up close and really personal with the holographic shark from the fictional “Jaws 19!” If you are looking for how to trigger this interaction, we’ll leave you with this timeless clue: X marks the spot.

PowerWash Simulator Back to the Future Special Pack Screenshot

“It was a unique challenge to imitate CGI from the 1980s with pixelated textures and interesting quirks in the animation! I studied the clip from the film and partnered with the team at Universal Games and Digital Platforms very closely to try to get the model and animation of the shark to feel as close as possible to the film,” recalls Meek.

    Constructing Doc’s Time Train

Who can forget Doc Brown’s explosive entrance on a time travelling train in “Back to the Future Part III?” Players can experience the epic take-off of Doc’s Time Train in the new Special Pack, just remember: the future is what you make it, so make it a clean one!

“My personal favourite animation in this special pack is the animation on the Doc’s Time Train,” Meek remarks, “Working out how all the parts of the train work from film footage was a real challenge, but I love the end result and being able to wash the train while all the parts are moving and watching it fly away is a great end to the level.”

PowerWash Simulator Back to the Future Special Pack Screenshot

You might be wondering: “Why aren’t they talking about the Time Machine?!” Well, we wanted you to experience that magical moment for yourselves! Once you reach 100% on the Time Machine level, you’ll see some serious…ly cool animation!

“I hope everyone enjoys the Back to the Future Special Pack and look out for the shark!” Meek says.

We hope you’ll love all the wit and wonder of the Back to the Future Special Pack! Xbox Game Pass members can play the original PowerWash Simulator as part of their membership. The Back to the Future Special Pack is available now for a separate purchase on the Xbox Store (a copy of PowerWash Simulator is required to play).

  • Back to the Future remote shows real DeLorean speed

Back to the Future remote shows real DeLorean speed

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

    Arduino TeamAugust 18th, 2022

In the Back to the Future films, the iconic DeLorean time machine had to reach 88mph in order to jump forward or backward in time. Even in 1985, it wasn’t very hard for a family sedan to reach 88mph, but that’s not the point. To show viewers the car’s current speed and increase tension, the prop designers brilliantly included a large digital speedometer readout on the remote that Doc holds. W. Jason Altice used Arduino boards to replicate that functionality on a rented DeLorean.

Altice rented the replica Back to the Future DeLorean from a company that caters to fans. That company wouldn’t let Altice modify the car, of course, so he wasn’t able to create a remote that actually controlled steering or throttle. But he was able to track the car’s speed and display that on a vintage RC-style transmitter without modifying the rental. He achieved that using two Arduino Uno boards that communicate with each other through REYAX RYLR998 LoRa transceiver modules.

The first Arduino sits in a simple plastic project box in the DeLorean. It uses an Adafruit Ultimate GPS Logger to monitor the car’s location and then calculates the speed with that data. It shows the speed value on a three-digit seven-segment display on the project box and also transmits the value to the second Arduino attached to the RC remote. That Arduino has another seven-segment display speedometer readout. With some glued-on wires and switches, the RC remote looks a lot like the prop from the movie and let Altice cosplay as Doc Brown with accuracy.

Great Scott! Learn how to drive flux capacitor-style LEDs

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

    Arduino TeamApril 14th, 2022

The flux capacitor is one of the most iconic movie props of all time. Part of that is due to its plot purpose in the Back to the Future franchise, but its fame is also because it looked so futuristic when the first movie hit theaters in 1985. LEDs were still relatively new in the public consciousness at the time and the animated LED effects in the prop flux capacitor were attention getting. If you want to reproduce that effect, element14 Presents’ Derek Brodeur has a video showing you have to drive flux capacitor-style LEDs with an Arduino.

The experienced among you know that this effect is possible to achieve with discrete components, which is likely how the original prop worked. But it is easier to reproduce the “animation” using a modern microcontroller like the Microchip ATmega4809 found on the Nano Every board. By driving each LED via PWM (pulse-width modulation), you can control its brightness. PWM works by very quickly modulating power to LED, with proportion of “on” time resulting in perceived brightness.

In order to produce the trailing effect seen on the flux capacitor, Brodeur explains how to write a sketch with a loop that fades the LEDs in, keeps them at max brightness, and then fades them out again in sequence. Unlike with discrete components, the Arduino makes it easy to control the timing of each step in the animation. The rest of the tutorial focuses on constructing the flux capacitor using common supplies so that it looks close to the original prop. It isn’t an exact replica, but it is close enough that everyone will immediately recognize it for what it is.

Top 10 thing we really want from Back to the Future! #BTTFDay 2015

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

So we made a little list with 10 things we tought that should have arrived before the 10/21/2015 or even not!

    10. Garden Center Fruit Dispencer

    bttf_Gardencenter

The Garden Center fruit dispenser (also sometimes known as simply Garden Centerwas a device that would hold and preserve fruit. The technology, available in 2015, was designed not only to promote good nutrition, but also good manners. The McFly family had such a dispenser at their home in Hilldale.

    9. Black&Decker Hydrator

    Hydrate_Level_Four_Please

Boy, oh boy, Mom, you sure know how to hydrate a pizza.Marty McFly

In the futuristic world of 2015 you’ll „hydrate“ Pizza Hut pizzas with your Black & Decker Hydrator.

    8. Mr. Fusion

    Back-to-the-Future-Mr-Fusion-Replica

Marty: „Wait a minute, what are you doing, Doc?
    Doc: „I need fuel!
    — Marty and Doc while Doc refuels Mr. Fusion with garbage

The Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor was the name of a power source used by the DeLorean time machine. The actual unit was manufactured by Fusion Industries.

And by the way if you want to make your own, just follow the video below 😉 🙂

    7. JVC Video Glasses

    FutureGlassesCap _86207899_8cfb87a2-7e29-48ff-b975-d5a62726a3f7

Video glasses were an input device, used in 2015, to view televisionprograms without a large screen. Marty McFly, Jr. wore a pair of JVC video glasses while eating dinner with his family; it was while heading to his chair in front of the TV beforehand, he passed 1985 Jennifer and commented on her pants („Hey, Mom. Nice pants“) — completely failing to notice that she was thirty years younger.

Now we would call those things maybe, OCULUS Rifts, Gear VR’s or Hololenses 😉 🙂 but JVC what did you miss out ?!?

    6. Automatic Dog-Walker , Dog Drone

Automatic dog-walkers were units developed between 1985 and 2015 that consisted of an autonomous hovercraft leashed to a dog’s collar to walk it when the owner was preoccupied.

    BTTF2-37-Dog-Walker-Drone

Marty McFly saw one of these in Hilldale the night he and Emmett Brown attempted to rescue Jennifer Parker from his future residence, and wandered away to do some exploring of Hilldale. The distraction was sufficient for Biff Tannen to steal the DeLorean time machine and travel from 2015 back to 1955.

    5. Pepsi Perfect – The Future is now Bottle

    pepsi-bttf2

When Marty arrived in 2015, there were no other cola brands visible to him except for Pepsi products. Pepsi Perfect was vitamin-enriched, and came in a bottle with its own built-in straw. Due to inflation, a bottle of Pepsi cost about $50.00. However, as of 2010, a 20 oz. bottle of Pepsi averages $1.50, so in order for inflation to suddenly surge to 666.66% per year, the economy would have to take a nosedive of Zimbabwean proportions.

    4. Nike Air McFly, Clothes

The Clothes are one of the biggest deals of Back to the Future, i mean we should all be dressed like this or:  🙂 🙂

    just-a-friendly-reminder

and the Nikes from the Fox Foundation where a special Edition and sold out really quick:

    3. Holomax Cinema, Holographic Projection

We are almost there?! Really?! We saw some nice concepts in the past, but their far away from near!!

We wished this part so hard to become true on 10/21/2015 but we only can hope.

    holomax

    2. The almighty Hoverboard!

    back-to-future-hoverboard-3

Data: „Hey McFly, you bojo! Those boards don’t work on water!Whitey: „Unless you got power! Hahahah…„— Griff’s gang taunts Marty McFly

A hoverboard is similar in appearance to a skateboard but underwent a hover conversion. They were manufactured in 2015 for all age ranges by different companies. Mattel made pink and orange models with handlebars for young children. Other companies made more aggressive boards, that were used by gangs in some instances, including the No Tech series, the Rising Sun, the Question Mark, and the Pit Bull, a rocket-fired board with three attachments for other riders on similar boards.

You can get them on Ebay for about 60 $: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BACK-TO-THE-FUTURE-HOVER-BOARD-REPLICA-PROP-SKATEBOARD-Marty-McFly-FULL-SIZE-/251976908632?hash=item3aaafe7f58:g:F6sAAOSwBahVaKmP7

but all are waiting for the real one working!! Even Car Industries trying their best so Lexus also made a good step into that direction:

    1. Delorean Timemachine 🙂 🙂

Could you not all mention it, sure the best thing we all want is the Timemachine from the Movie 🙂

Here are some cool Deloreans that made it to the Year 2015!!

When Pepsi managed to get its brand of sugar water in 1989’s classic Back to the Future II, it surely wasn’t anticipating being able to cash in on that product placement more than two decades later. But that’s exactly what’s happening this month, as the company featured in Marty McFly’s fictional 2015 is releasing a real product based on the movie:the Pepsi Perfect bottle. Limited to a release of 6,500 and set to go on sale on October 21st, 2015 — the date to which Marty and Doc Brown traveled forward in time — the Perfect bottles will cost $20.15 each. Using the year to set the price is a nice touch, and even though that’s a high price to pay for 16.9 ounces of Pepsi Made with Real Sugar, the collectible value of the thing will likely be much higher.

Pepsi has urged fans to follow its social media channels to find out exactly where they’ll be able to buy a Pepsi Perfect of their own, though USA Today also notes that 1,500 bottles will be given away to Marty McFly cosplayers at New York Comic Con this week.

It’s 2015, so many of us did a Back to the Future marathon on New Years to celebrate it being the year of hover skateboards and self-lacing shoes. It was my first time seeing Parts 2 and 3 myself, and I’m always blown away every time the DeLorean hits 88mph, taking Marty and the Doc to some distant timeline or alternate reality.

That’s what makes these posters, created by artist Andy Fairhurst, so incredible. Called the 88MPH Trilogy, each shows a top-down view of the DeLorean the moment it travels between timelines, all starting with that fateful trip back to 1955. Take a look.

Where Is the Black & Decker Food Hydrator!?

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

In the 1989 film Back to the Future II, Marty McFly visits October 21, 2015 and witnesses all kinds of new technology including power shoelaces and flying hover boards. Arguably the greatest technological advancement of them all, however, is the food hydrator. It’s now 9 months until the fated day, but there are no signs or advancements that allow pizza to be hydrated. Are you as disappointed as I am?

The food hydrator works sort of like an oven or microwave. In the movie, Grandma Lorraine puts a small, dehydrated Pizza Hut pizza into the hydrator and says „hydrate level 4, please!“ and the pizza comes out normal size and ready to eat. It only takes 12 seconds to work. It’s food magic.

Unfortunately right now, the only way to rehydrate anything it to basically boil it. Obviously, pizza isn’t the ideal candidate for this process. Such a bummer.

It’s not Back to the Future II‘s fault for getting our hopes up; the movie had the right idea all along. You have nine more months to rectify this situation, Black & Decker.

Back to the Future is a classic. Like any classic, it has some sins. This was one of the runners-up in our viewer-request poll, so we’re being all charitable and stuff by doing this one as a bonus.

With 55 mistakes, the film still managed to teach a generation lessons like the importance of standing up for yourself and the ease of car surfing. And when you focus on that, you forget the fact that in the world of film, you can stand in a line of flames unharmed.

As children of the ’80’s continue to have children of their own, it’s only appropriate that the toys reflect those rad times when high top sneakers, Nintendo, and big hair were totally in style.

    DeLoreanPushCar1

With a love for both cars and Back to the Future, clever mom corey4281 created this DeLorean Push Car for her 1-year-old son Cooper, who already had the matching red vest.

    DeLoreanPushCar7

The original inspiration came from a Marty McFly-related comment from her husband and the idea grew into reality from there. To create the mini time machine, corey4281 used a toy push car covered in cardboard, tape, paint, and a little bit of EL wire lighting.
