Over the past few years, Android has been redesigning its software experience for larger screens, like tablets and foldable phones. This includes working with developers to make sure apps — whether they’re for productivity, creativity or gaming — look great and make the most of the larger screen space.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of the expansive, cinematic experience that foldable phones and tablets deliver. My favorite mobile games are able to come to life on a whole new stage, where every vibrant detail and sweeping landscape can truly shine. From heart-pounding action games to intricate puzzles, every genre feels amplified on these immersive displays.

To see for yourself, here are five games that are great to play on Android’s larger screens.

Stay connected, informed and entertained with more apps

Whether you’re looking to check the weather forecast at your destination, or parked waiting for your kids at school pickup, there’s new apps to help you stay informed and entertained in cars with Google built-in.

Today, Chrome browser is starting to roll out to select Polestar and Volvo cars in beta, and will be available in more cars later this year, so you can do a little shopping or access your saved bookmarks to keep you busy while parked.

And if you need to keep the kids entertained (or hey, maybe keep yourself entertained!), you can watch shows from PBS KIDS and Crunchyroll, which are both now available in select cars with Google built-in.

Finally, by popular demand, The Weather Channel app is now available for cars with Google built-in, giving you peace of mind on the road. Now you can stay up-to-date on changing weather conditions with hourly forecasts, follow-me, alerting and “Trip View” radar right from your dashboard.

Android is all about giving you the ability to choose the devices that work best for you and making sure they connect seamlessly together, regardless of what brand they are.

Today at CES, we’re announcing updates to help you get more done across your phone, laptop, Bluetooth accessories, TV, smart home and car. Take a look at these updates and how they build on improvements we made to our ecosystem at last year’s CES.

A new way to share files

Sharing pictures, files and text between devices should be simple, fast and convenient. In 2020, we introduced Nearby Share to make it easy to share files across devices. Samsung also has its own capability called Quick Share, which is loved by their users.

Collaborating with Samsung, we’re bringing the best of our sharing solutions together into a singular cross-Android solution under the Quick Share name. We’ve integrated the experiences and created the best default, built-in option for peer-to-peer content sharing across all types of devices in the Android and Chromebook ecosystems. And to make sharing even more seamless between devices, we’re working with leading PC manufacturers like LG to expand Quick Share to Windows PCs as a pre-installed app.

This means with a simple tap of the new Quick Share icon, you can see a list of available devices close by. You remain in control of your privacy, and can choose in your phone’s settings who can discover your device and send files, whether it’s everyone, only your contacts or just your own devices. Quick Share will start rolling out to current Nearby Share enabled devices next month.

Android and Google Play have continuously evolved to provide more flexibility and choice in response to feedback from developers and regulators, as well as intense competition from Apple and app stores across the open Android ecosystem. We demonstrated this in the recent trial and were disappointed that the verdict did not recognize the choice and competition that our platforms enable. While we are challenging that verdict and our case with Epic is far from over, we remain committed to continually improving Android and Google Play.

Today, the details of a settlement reached in September with state attorneys general were filed publicly. This settlement builds on Android’s choice and flexibility, maintains strong security protections, and retains Google’s ability to compete with other OS makers, and invest in the Android ecosystem for users and developers. We’re pleased to resolve our case with the states and move forward on a settlement that includes:

    • Growing our commitment to app store choice: We have always allowed alternative app stores to be preloaded onto Android devices and for users to download alternative app stores directly. In fact, most Android devices ship with two or more app stores preloaded. The settlement with the attorneys general makes clear that OEMs can continue to provide users with options out of the box to use Play or another app store. We recently implemented features in Android 14 that will make third-party app stores work even better for users and let third-party app stores update apps more easily.
    • Streamlining sideloading while prioritizing security: Unlike on iOS, Android users have the option to sideload apps, meaning they can download directly from a developer’s website without going through an app store like Google Play. While we maintain it is critical to our safety efforts to inform users that sideloading on mobile could come with unique risks, as part of our settlement we will be further simplifying the sideloading process and updating the language that informs users about these potential risks of downloading apps directly from the web for the first time.
    • Expanding user choice billing to more people: App and game developers will be able to implement an alternative billing option alongside Google Play’s billing system for their U.S. users who can then choose which option to use when making in-app purchases. We have been piloting user choice billing in the U.S. for over a year and will now expand this option further.
    • Expanding open communication on pricing: We have always given developers more ways to interact with their customers than iOS and other operating systems. For example, Google Play allows developers to communicate freely with their customers outside the app about subscription offers or lower-cost options available on a rival app store or the developer’s website. This openness has spurred competition and benefited consumers and developers. As part of user choice billing, which we’re expanding with today’s settlement announcement, developers are also able to show different pricing options within the app when a user makes a digital purchase.
    • Contributing to a settlement fund: Google will pay $630 million into a settlement fund to be distributed for the benefit of consumers according to a Court-approved plan and $70 million into a fund that will be used by the states.

Android and Google Play provide choices and opportunities for innovation that other platforms we compete against simply don’t – from allowing for multiple app stores and avenues of app distribution to piloting new ways for users to pay for in-app purchases. We’re pleased to reach an agreement that builds on that foundation and we look forward to making these improvements that will help evolve Android and Google Play for the benefit of millions of developers and billions of people around the world. These proposed changes will go into effect after the Court formally approves the settlement.

We’re continuing to work towards making AI useful for everyone, including by collaborating with others— and approaching it in a bold and responsible way.

A great example of this is Lengua Española e Inteligencia Artificial — Spanish Language and Artificial Intelligence (LEIA), a project the Real Academia Española (RAE) set up four years ago to improve the use of the Spanish language in technological environments. The Academia invited tech companies to join, committing to improving the use of the Spanish language in technological environments, helping the 590 million Spanish speakers worldwide and increasing the presence of the Spanish language.

Today, we’re announcing two major advances we’ve made as part of this project: First off, we’ve incorporated the lexical repertoire of the RAE’s Dictionary of the Spanish Language into Gboard, the keyboard app from Google. Second, we’ve integrated the Spanish Language Dictionary of the Royal Academy into Search.

    Improved Spanish in Gboard

Thanks to the integration of the RAE lexicon as a source for Gboard’s AI language models, we’ve seen key improvements in Gboard, such as faster autocorrections, in words such as García, Rodríguez, Coruña, Nicaragua or Jaén, and those with an accent — like música, río, frío o vehículo. It has also allowed for better word recommendations, smoother changes between English and Spanish when typing, and reduced biases.

Moreover, hundreds of thousands of new words („ibuprofeno“, „criptomonedas“, „SMS“, „tempura“) have been integrated into the Gboard dictionary for Android.

For years, we’ve been working across the mobile industry, including carriers and smartphone manufacturers around the world, to evolve and adopt RCS, the modern texting standard.

By replacing the outdated SMS and MMS protocols, users benefit from a more modern and secure messaging experience with typing indicators, read receipts, threaded replies, high-quality media sharing, improved group chats, better privacy like end-to-end encryption and more with RCS. RCS is a much better messaging protocol, and we know that people love using it.

Today marks a new milestone that we are incredibly proud of: There are now more than one billion monthly active users with RCS enabled in Google Messages. We are grateful to our partners and our users that have advocated for RCS over the years — it’s been a lot of work to get here, and we want to thank you. Beyond Google Messages, there are other messaging clients that use RCS and we are pleased that Apple also took their first step two weeks ago in announcing that they’re embracing RCS.

As more people use their devices for mobile banking and money management, fraudsters and criminals are increasingly using malicious apps to steal money or account information.

Scammers often send phishing messages trying to get you to download a fraudulent app that’s designed to get your financial credentials, either through surveillance or by acting like a legitimate app. These phishing messages may appear to come from a well-known company, like a bank or a delivery service, and require urgent action to resolve an issue quickly. These types of scams affect people all over the world and have grown rapidly in recent years across all mobile operating systems.

    Android’s built-in security protections

Android has always offered the ability to download apps from many different sources. And we’ve built in multiple layers of protections and warnings to help you stay safe and make informed choices when downloading apps outside of established app stores.

To celebrate International Fraud Awareness Week, here’s a look at our multi-layered app safety defenses and a reminder of how to use them in your daily life to stay protected.

    • Phone by Google: Phone helps protect against voice phishing and scams with built-in caller ID, spam protection and Call Screen. We will block dangerous calls or warn you about suspicious callers, who may be trying to trick you into downloading an app or sharing sensitive information. If you see a warning, think twice before answering. With Call Screen on Pixel phones, Google Assistant can even answer unknown numbers and find out who’s calling and why – so you can decide whether to pick up.
    • Messages by Google and Gmail: We use AI to spot suspicious messages by assessing the reputation of the sender, looking for known patterns and dangerous links. We will automatically block messages or flag them clearly with a warning. If you see a flagged message, proceed with caution especially before clicking on links and attachments.
    • Google Safe Browsing: Safe Browsing provides more protection in cases where a link may have looked legitimate. We’ll warn you if it looks like the site is dangerous and is attempting to phish your credentials. Use the warning to click on the “Go back to safety” option to avoid a bad site.

Android has made phones more affordable, provided consumers with more options, and enabled developers to thrive. Epic Games has fought a global, years-long campaign to up-end this system all in the hope of getting something for nothing. They have already sued Apple and lost twice. Next week they are trying their luck with Android by bringing a case that has even less merit given the flexibility and choices Android offers.

Epic argues that it is forced to distribute its apps through Google Play and that options available to developers are too restrictive. These claims are baseless. Android enables developers to distribute through multiple app stores or directly to users through the web, bypassing app stores altogether. The truth is that Epic simply wants all the benefits that Android and Google Play provide without having to pay for them. And it wants to strip away critical security and privacy protections that keep billions of users safe from things like unfair subscription practices and dishonest billing, for which Epic itself has faced record fines.

Here’s more detail about the facts at the heart of this case:

    • Google Play competes fairly for users and developers. At trial, Epic will argue that Google Play doesn’t compete with the Apple App Store. This is obviously not true — and it’s a theory that courts have rejected. Android competes with Apple’s iOS and the iPhone, and Google Play competes intensely with the App Store for both consumers and developers. We also compete with other Android app stores, including the Samsung Galaxy Store and Amazon Appstore, as well as app stores on gaming consoles and PCs. We’ve worked to attract developers through efforts like our Games Velocity Program, which offered developers incentives to launch their apps on Play alongside other competing stores such as the Apple App Store. Contrary to Epic’s false characterization, this program did not require exclusivity on Play or prevent developers from opening their own app stores.
    • Developers have many ways to distribute their apps on Android. Epic also claims that developers have no other choice than to distribute their apps through Google Play. That’s not true either. Android is the only major mobile platform that gives developers multiple ways to distribute apps. In fact, most Android devices come preloaded with two or more app stores right out of the box — and users can install others if they want. Developers can also distribute their apps directly to their users. Epic takes full advantage of Android’s distribution options by making their most popular app, Fortnite, available for billions of Android users around the world to download through the Samsung Galaxy Store and directly through their website. This choice and flexibility is possible only on Android.
    • We provide a wide range of tools and services, not just payment processing. Epic would like you to believe the only value Google Play provides is payment processing, and that that’s the only thing we should charge for. The truth is Google Play invests heavily in supporting all developers big and small across every stage of an app’s journey, providing an array of tools and services to help them grow their businesses and acquire, engage and keep users. These investments mean developers can choose the business models that work for them which, in turn, creates more choice for customers. Plus, Google Play’s ongoing investment in safety features and platform improvements creates a trusted environment — one where people can explore a range of new apps with confidence while also discovering new developers.
    • Google Play’s fees are the lowest of any major app store. We fund our investments in the ecosystem in part through a service fee that applies only when a developer on Google Play sells in-app digital goods or services. This is a sensible model: We make money only when a developer does, so our success is aligned with theirs and we are incentivized to improve the platform for developers. While Epic argues our fees are too high, Google Play’s fees are actually the lowest among major app stores. In fact, 99% of developers qualify for a service fee of 15% or less. This fee structure also avoids higher up-front charges that would burden small developers. This flexibility has led to a rapid increase in digital transactions, particularly in gaming apps like Fortnite, where the “freemium” model has become very popular among game developers.
    • Google Play is the only mobile platform offering users choice in payments. Though Epic claims consumers are forced to use Google Play’s billing system, that’s again not true. We’re piloting a system on Google Play where users choose between Google Play’s billing system and a system of the developer’s choosing when they purchase in-app digital goods and services. User choice billing includes a standard fee to ensure that we can maintain Android’s safe and secure experience when purchasing in apps. Today this option is live in more than 35 countries, and we are committed to working with Android developers to iterate and improve the program while keeping users safe and protected. Of course, when downloaded from a competing app store or directly from a developer’s website, users pay with the developer or app store’s billing system of choice.
    • This lawsuit risks making Android less safe. Users expect a safe experience on Android, and we are committed to keeping our users safe even while giving them choice. For example, when someone downloads an app for the first time directly from a developer’s website, Android notifies the user and asks them to verify they are doing so intentionally. We do this to ensure that users understand the risks of downloading software onto their mobile device directly from the web. We’ve streamlined this user prompt to make it a seamless, simple process. However, Epic wants these user notifications removed entirely, leaving the three billion people around the world who rely on these security precautions uninformed and putting their security and privacy at risk.

Android’s choice and flexibility work well for consumers and developers of all sizes. We look forward to making our case in court as we fight to keep our users safe from harm, partner with developers to grow their businesses, and keep the Android ecosystem thriving and healthy for everyone.

    My journey with Android

This whole journey has been nothing short of unpredictable. When I first joined the team, Dianne Hackborn, one of the earliest engineers on the project, let me know she’d been asked to write a chapter on Android for the 4th edition of the Modern Operating Systems book by Andrew S. Tannenbaum. Many of you that studied computer science will remember that book – edition 2 still sits on my shelf at home. At this moment, I realized what an honor and privilege it is to work on something that has had such an impact on the world.

Happy 15th birthday to the whole Android ecosystem and thanks for all the support over years. Together, I’m sure we’ll make the next 15 years even more memorable.

Also, we don’t always stick with the same tone or gender presentation. On average, 73% of participants report picking the same tone every time for self-representation, while 24% regularly swap between two tones. This is usually a color adjacent to their most commonly-used one, but many people report using multiple tones because of changes to their skin tone due to sun, or to align more closely with the skin tones of the audience they are engaging with.

Whether we use emoji skin tones is often related to the situation (e.g. at work vs chatting with family), but people are also reluctant to use these emoji to refer to other people. Many people feel it would be rude to “impose” a skin tone on someone else, especially someone they are not close to. They really are a deeply personal expression of identity.

In the same way we carefully pick our words when sending a formal email 👍🏽 or flirty text 🫶🏿, selecting our skin tone or gender is fluid. By providing faster access to the kind of emoji we need when we need it, our keyboards become a rich canvas for expression. 🫴🏾✨💖

Make your devices your own with Android 14

Android (and Google as a whole) serves people around the world, which means we have to support a seemingly infinite spectrum of needs, wants and personal tastes. On Android 14, you’ll see this work has matured, with more stylistic clock options, generative AI imagery and widgets and smarter shortcuts that better accommodate your preferences.

How many times in a day do you look at your phone to check the time? Clocks are an obvious first place to start, since they are featured prominently every time you look at your phone. Our new suite of custom clocks are not just for looks — they are also highly functional and have been designed in a manner so that you can still enjoy your wallpaper and continue to receive relevant and contextual information in our “At a Glance” space, such as weather information, travel, fitness activity, and live doorbell alerts that show who’s at the door when your Nest doorbell rings, to name a few.

Customizing your lock screen goes beyond the visual, too: being able to quickly access what you need, when you need it, is fundamental. With our new custom quick shortcut feature, you can personalize what you want to access directly from your lock screen. For example, if you’re a content creator, you can quickly pull up your video camera without having to manually toggle to a video recording mode after entering your camera app. Or if you’re dining out, QR code scanning can be just a shortcut away.

    Advanced security and compliance features

At Android, we’re committed to building the most secure mobile platform for businesses. So we’re introducing new security and compliance features in Android 14 to provide even stronger protection for your work devices.

    • Six-digit PIN unlock: We’ve increased the default lock screen PIN number from four digits to six. Adding just two digits to unlock the device increases the number of possible PIN combinations from 10,000 to 1 million — reducing the risk of break-ins.
    • Credential manager controls: New credential manager controls for Work Profile and fully managed devices allow IT admins to only enable credential managers they trust. With more control over their data, organizations can better protect sensitive business credentials.
    • 2G connectivity controls: IT admins can now configure mobile connectivity according to their risk model, allowing them to protect their managed devices from 2G traffic interception, person-in-the-middle attacks and other 2G network vulnerabilities. For example, IT admins can temporarily turn off 2G radio when employees are traveling to specific high-risk locations, or turn off 2G by default.
    • Ultra-wide band (UWB) logs: We’ve introduced new policy logs and admin controls for managed UWB to meet this year’s National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) standards.

For more information on Android’s ongoing security and compliance efforts, check out the latest version of the Android Security Paper. You’ll find a detailed overview of Android’s security and management APIs, including our multi-layered approach to security, the types of Zero Trust signals available, Google Play Protect’s malware defense and Android’s security certifications.

Whether it’s the color of your phone, your choice of phone case, the hardware of your device or the choices you’ve made to customize its software, your devices are an extension of your personality. Android has always helped you express yourself in both practical and artistic ways–from the wallpaper, style and color palette theme to buttons and backgrounds. Now, we’re introducing more ways to tailor your phone to your personal preferences.

Android 14’s updated customization picker makes it easier to switch between wallpapers and update what you want to see at a glance. You can now set custom lock screen shortcuts, like QR reader or the Google Home app, so you have quick, one-tap access to your most used controls directly from your Android lock screen.

Choose from a set of new, curated lock screen templates for fonts, widgets, colors and formats that best match your style. These options also use AI to adjust your screen based on your situation. For example, if the weather is suddenly taking a turn for the worse, your lock screen weather widget will become more prominent.

Android 14 also lets you show off your most creative and artistic self — no art skills required. Coming first to Pixel 8/8 Pro, generative AI wallpapers use AI-generated text-to-image diffusion models to help you create wallpapers that match your vision. You can choose from pre-set suggestions to create never-before-seen wallpapers in just a few taps.

If you prefer a less colorful phone aesthetic that is easy on the eyes, Android 14 includes a monochromatic theme that makes minimal colors look sleek and beautiful across your entire device.

Android is also helping to improve your photo and camera quality. Building on Android 13’s support for high dynamic range (HDR) video, Android 14 supports HDR images with Ultra HDR. Ultra HDR helps your photos look their best by bringing out vibrant colors, brighter highlights and darker shadows. Plus, thanks to the great HDR screens available on many of today’s phones, Ultra HDR takes and displays high-definition photos without altering the original quality of the image.

More control over your health, security and data

Apps help people track their fitness, health and wellness levels. But the data that’s collected is often isolated within each particular app, limiting your visibility and control over your data. Health Connect is now built into your Android 14 settings as a central way to store all your data in one place and stay in control of your privacy. And your data is securely encrypted on your phone, which ensures Google or anyone else can’t see or use it for any other purpose. Just connect and sync your favorite health and fitness apps — like Oura, Peloton and Whoop — to get started.

You’ll also have more visibility into how your data is being used by apps that request access to your data. With new data sharing updates on Android 14, when you’re asked to grant apps permission to information like your location you’ll be notified when an app is sharing location data with third parties and can make a more informed decision on whether or not to grant access.

One of my favorite ways to unwind and relax is by watching TV shows and movies on my Pixel Fold. Since I always have my phone on me, I love being able to just flip it open to start enjoying videos on a large screen whenever I want.

I know I’m not alone, which is why we work with your favorite video streaming apps around the world to make sure they are available on Google Play, and to make sure they have been updated for larger screens, too. Today, we’re highlighting six video streaming apps that have been optimized for your Android foldable phone or tablet:

We’re also expanding your parked entertainment options beyond video. Already available in some cars as a standalone app, Vivaldi, a Chromium-based internet browser, is rolling out starting today on Google Play in the car. With Vivaldi’s powerful functionality, you’re able to browse the web safely while parked so you can make the most of your time.

More peace of mind while on your drive

In addition to being productive and entertained, we’re also investing in more ways to help you stay up to speed while on the open road. For example, if an unexpected rainstorm interrupts your trip, you will soon be able to download The Weather Channel app from Google Play on cars with Google built-in. The Weather Channel, the world’s most accurate weather forecaster, allows drivers to always stay up-to-date on changing weather conditions with hourly forecasts, follow-me alerting and “Trip View” radar, helping keep drivers aware of the conditions ahead.

As the world’s largest operating system, Android’s open platform serves a diverse community of developers, device makers and users. And as we’ve grown — with over 3 billion Android devices worldwide — so has our vision. We believe our brand system and how we show up visually to the world as Android should reflect Android’s core ethos of being open, iterative and inclusive. That’s why we’re sharing an update to our visual identity that better represents our Android community — and it’s also a lot of fun, too.

    Behind our new logo makeover

Over the past decade, the Android brand has undergone several updates to modernize its look and feel and evolve with the needs of our community. In 2019, for instance, we changed our logo to be more accessible and easier to read. We also updated the naming convention for Android releases from fanciful (e.g., Android Lollipop) to simple (e.g., Android 14), making subsequent releases clearer and easier to understand globally.

Each time we overhaul our branding, we evaluate not only changing needs, but also future goals. We know people today want more choice and autonomy, and we want our brand to be reflective of Android: something that gives people the freedom to create on their terms. As an open platform, it’s important that both our technology and brand are an invitation for people to create, connect and do more with Google on Android devices.

Our new visuals draw inspiration from Material design to complement the Google brand palette, as well as be adaptable. The refreshed and dynamic robot shows up where Android connects with people, community and cultural moments. It can reflect individual passions, personality and context.

With this update, you’ll notice some subtle changes that help connect Android to Google. In addition to moving away from our longstanding lowercase stylization of “android,” we’re elevating the Android logo by capitalizing the “A,” adding more weight to its appearance when placed next to Google’s logo. While we’ve added more curves and personality unique to Android, the new Android stylization more closely mirrors Google’s logo and creates balance between the two. We hope these small but significant updates to the Android typeface will better communicate the relationship between Android devices and the Google apps and services people already know.

Scrolling through images in a group chat, photos on your camera app or even on social media can often be inaccessible for people who are blind or low-vision. Image Q&A on Lookout makes visual content more accessible by using AI to generate more detailed descriptions. After opening an image, you can type or use your voice to ask follow-up questions to learn more about what is in the image. Lookout is also making 11 new languages available on its app, including Japanese, Korean and Chinese, bringing the total number of supported languages to 34.
