You Won’t Believe What Scientists Say Blue Light Can Do For Humans

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Still have a morning ritual of drinking a few cups of Joe? Well, researchers at Mid Sweden University compared the effects of caffeine and blue light on the brain and found them both to have a positive effect. Here’s the kicker, people who were exposed to blue light performed better on tests of brain function that included a distraction.

Here’s what one researcher has to say: „The same distraction, however, proved too much for caffeine users, who performed poorly. Blue light and caffeine demonstrated distinct effects on aspects of psychomotor function. The study builds on research that suggests blue light can improve cognitive abilities such as memory, alertness and reaction time. Although harmless to tissue, blue light is strong enough to trigger biological effects in the body, and it’s being used increasingly for a range of medical treatments.“

You read that right, researchers at the National University of Singapore have created a ‚digital lollipop‘ that utilizes electric currents to transmit virtual tastes straight to your tastebuds. The machine is similar to the fictional Everlasting Gobstopper in which it never runs out, and also the Chewing Gum Meal, which had several different flavors packed into one piece of gum.

All of the four major taste groups – sweet, salty, bitter and sour – can be recreated through a silver electrode which makes contact with the tongue.

Nimesha Ranasinghe, who was the lead researcher on the project, told New Scientist magazine: „We have found noninvasive electrical and thermal stimulation of the tip of the tongue successfully generates the primary taste sensations.“ The Daily Mail would like to add that „the invention is relatively crude at the moment, but there are hopes to make it small enough that users can almost wholly close their mouth while using it.“

Scientists Discover Largest Cosmic Explosion Ever, Gamma Ray Bursts 3.7-Billion Light Years Into Space

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Scientists have observed the largest and brightest cosmic explosion ever.

    gamma-ray-burst

Astronomers have called the gamma ray burst ‚the monster‘ because it created five times more energy than the largest, captured 3.7 billion light years away. This single burst created five times more energy than the largest previously-known blast and if it had been closer to Earth, our planet could have been destroyed.

Here’s what The Daily Mail has to report: „The burst is said to have flooded Nasa monitoring instruments with five times the energy of its nearest competitor, a 1999 blast, said University of Alabama at Huntsville astrophysicist Rob Preece, author of one of the studies. It started with a star that had 20 to 30 times the mass of our sun but was only a couple of times wider, meaning it was incredibly dense.

5 Amazing Inventions Created by Geeky Kids and Teens

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Most teens are worrying about prom and making new friends, these five spent all of their free time inventing things, such as a super fast gadget charger, self-driving care, and lots more. We’ve rounded up five amazing inventions created by geeky kids and teens from around the world.

    5. Banana Bioplastic

Sixteen-year-old Turkish student-scientist Elif Bilgin, from Istanbul, spent the last two years experimenting with ways to produce a bioplastic out of used banana peels. Thankfully, all her hard work paid off. She is the winner of the 2013 $50,000 Science in Action award from the Google Science Fair. Elif says that the banana bioplastic could be used for the electrical insulation of cables.

    4. Self-Driving Car

Ionut Budisteanu may look like your normal 19-year-old teen from Istanbul, but unlike the others, he developed a low-cost self-driving car. His autonomous system utilizes webcams to identify objects in its path, paired with a low-resolution 3D radar to find larger items. Best of all, this camera setup only costs $4,000, rather than Google’s $75,000 system.

    3. Super Fast Gadget Charger

A miniature device that can recharge your phone in just 30-seconds won 18-year-old Eesha Khare a major science award that will help fund her college education at Harvard University. She traveled from her California home to Phoenix earlier this year for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, where her invention was honored as one of two winners of Young Scientist Awards.

    2. Thermoelectric Flashlight

Fifteen-year-old Ann Makosinski from Canada designed and built a thermoelectric flashlight that transforms the heat from your hand into a source of energy. In order for the flashlight to be powered by body energy, Ann used Peltier tiles — a device that produces energy when one side is heated and another side is cooled. Apparently, the light can last for about 20 minutes.

    1. R5800 Solar Death Ray

Geeky student Eric Jacqmain created this solar death ray using a normal satellite dish and 5,800 small mirrors. It took only 24-hours to built from start to finish, and purportedly has the intensity of 5,000 suns. Jacqmain says: „I drilled a small hole in the dish and glued a piece of PVC pipe on the back. Light shines through the hole and hits the translucent plastic on the end of the pipe. All I had to do was aim the dish once and mark the spot.“

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Magnapinna squids are one of the deep-sea more ethereal creatures. Little is known of these squid as very few have ever been captured, although over the last decade with the increased usage of remotely operated vehicles (ROV) and submersibles more and more video is emerging of them.  They are unusual in both that the fins are up to 90% of the length of the body, i.e. the mantle, and the ridiculously long length of the arms. The squid often will hold some of the arms at a 90˚ angles from the side of the body.  Wikipedia has a nice entry on the history of their discovery.

On November 11, 2007., a  Shell oil company ROV capture a Magnapinna on video (below) at a depth of 2386 meters (~1.5 miles). Someone (I’ve been unable to track down who created this), used the video to produce a single image of this individual (above). It was subsequently posted to Reddit. Love the image of this fascinating creature.

Andrew Basiago Claims to be Time Traveler, Shows Photo of Gettysburg as Proof

According to the Huffington Post, since 2004, Seattle attorney Andrew Basiago has been publicly claiming that from the ages of 7-12, he participated in the top secret US Government program called „Project Pegasus,“ under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Basiago claims that he can be seen in a photograph of Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg in 1863, which he purportedly visited in 1972 via a plasma confinement chamber located in East Hanover, New Jersey.

Here’s what Andrew has to say about the photo: „I had been dressed in period clothing, as a Union bugle boy. I attracted so much attention at the Lincoln speech site at Gettysburg — wearing over-sized men’s street shoes — that I left the area around the dais and walked about 100 paces over to where I was photographed in the Josephine Cogg image of Lincoln at Gettysburg.“

In his recent, he also says that „Neanderthals such as homo erectus were crossbred with another species, perhaps from Alpha Centauri, which is the closest star system to our solar system, some 4.37 light years away from the sun.“

That’s not all that Dr. Ellis Silver has to say, he adds: „…mankind may have evolved on a different planet, and we may have been brought here as a highly developed species.

Professor and scientist Robert Lanza claims the theory of biocentrism teaches that death as we know it is an illusion created by our consciousness.

    real-afterlife

That’s right, he says that life creates the universe, and not the other way round, meaning that space and time don’t exist in the linear fashion we think it does. To illustrate his point, Lanza uses the famous double-split experiment.

Here’s what The Daily Mail has to say about Lanza’s theory: „By looking at the universe from a biocentric’s point of view, this also means space and time don’t behave in the hard and fast ways our consciousness tell us it does. Once this theory about space and time being mental constructs is accepted, it means death and the idea of immortality exist in a world without spatial or linear boundaries. Theoretical physicists believe that there is infinite number of universes with different variations of people, and situations taking place, simultaneously.“

Mars may currently be a desolate planet, but it definitely sustained life at one point of its existence. In addition to Curiosity discovering water on the Red Planet’s surface, scientists have also found large amounts of phosphates on meteorites originating from there. These two elements – water and phosphates – are necessary for life to form on a planet.

    mars-with-water

According to Dvice, „Mars‘ atmosphere today is not prone to sustaining life because of its low pressure and temperature. Under current conditions on the planet, water usually appears as ice or vapor, never staying in its liquid phase for long. However, after studying the surface of Mars, along with minerals present on its surface, scientists believe that its atmosphere was a lot different and may have been conducive for oceans of liquid water to develop on the planet. The large craters on Mars suggest that there were such bodies of water, with channels that connected them.“

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

No, you’re not looking at a fan-made CG creation of a real Pokemon character, but rather the Pink Fairy Armadillo. It’s the smallest species of armadillo and found in central Argentina, where it inhabits dry grasslands and sandy plains with thorn bushes and cacti.

    20131112-12580801-armadillo1

The pink fairy armadillo is approximately 90-115 mm (3.5-4.5 inches) long, excluding the tail, and is pale rose or pink in color. It has the ability to bury itself completely in a matter of seconds if frightened.

It is a nocturnal animal. It burrows small holes near ant colonies in dry soil, and feeds mainly on ants and ant larvae near its burrow. Occasionally, it feeds on worms, snails, insects and larvae, or various plant and root material.

The pink fairy armadillo spends much of its time under the ground, as it is a „sand swimmer“ similar to the golden mole or the marsupial mole. It uses large front claws to agitate the sand, allowing it to almost swim through the ground in a manner reminiscent of swimming through water. It is torpedo-shaped, and has a shielded head and back.

  • The Fate Of The Whomobile – Retro Future Cars

The Fate Of The Whomobile – Retro Future Cars

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

You have to be a bit of a character to take on the lead role in Doctor Who. When Jon Pertwee took over, it was the series‘ first venture into colour. These new earthbound adventure brought massive popularity to the show and its star, turning in an impressively popular four year run. Known before the role as a comedian, Pertwee played the role straight proving himself to be a great choice for the Doctor. In his real life he was a gadget fan, as well as a sportsman and car enthusiast – all perfect traits for a time traveler. It was while at an appearance at an auto dealership that he met car customizer Peter Farries, which is where the story of Pertwee’s 1973 Whomobile began.

The vehicle was never called the „Whomobile“ in the show, though Pertwee does refer to it as such in his memoirs. It was actually designed under another name, „The Alien“. Pertwee and Farries sketched out the fantasy car. Other car customizers said it would take several moldings to create such an unusual shape in fiberglass, but Farries did it in only two. The completed car was 14 feet long, 7 feet across, with fins that reached 5 feet into the air. There are no doors, you have to hop in over the wing, and once inside the driver and uncomfortable passenger are faced with the blinky lights of a prop computer, and a real television with dual rear antennae. Here’s a great clip from children’s show Blue Peter (it’s great how the pair do sort of try to keep up the illusion of the car’s abilities being „real“) that offers what is probably the most detailed look at the car ever.

Once completed (at Pertwee’s cost) the star was able to persuade the producers of Doctor Who to include the vehicle in the series. The car first appeared not yet complete in the 10th season’s „Invasion of the Dinosaurs“. The front windscreen you see in the episode as well as in the Blue Peter segment (hosted by Peter Purves, a 1960’s Who companion) was from a boat, added to make the vehicle roadworthy. Its second and final appearance was in Pertwee’s swansong, „Planet of the Spiders“, where thought chromakey trickery the vehicle was shown to fly.

    Pertwee

To this day some fans still think the Whomobile was a hovercraft. In fact the three wheeler struggled to be legally classified, until it was finally referred to as „an invalid tricycle“… that could go a hundred miles an hour!. Pertwee used the car for personal appearances even after his tenure as the Doctor was over. Eventually he gave it to a fan bereaved over the tragic death of his mother, with Pertwee simply „borrowing“ it back on occasion. Just a few years ago (and this makes me crazy…) the car went up for auction with little fanfare. It was misclassified as a boat (foreshadowed by that boat windscreen used in version 1 of the car?) and went for around £1200. Had I known about the sale, I’d have made my way to the UK to bring back the official Retro Thing company car.

How to cut your Pizza perfectyl, with formula!

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

    Basic assumptions

Quantities of topping and base. We assume that the same pizza recipe is being
used at all times, so that the total quantity of dough and total quantity of topping
    remain constant.
Shape. We assume the pizza is circular although, of course, no pizza is a perfect
    circle.
Edge. We assume that an edge is left around the pizza topping. Following some
experiments, we assume that it is proportional to the thickness of the pizza—we prefer
to leave a bigger edge when the base is thicker. Perhaps this is because the topping
    has further to fall off.
Median bite. We assume that more than half of the bites will come from the centre
of the pizza, that is, a part not including the edge. This is a reasonable assumption
for all but very small pizzas. Thus a median bite will be from a part of the pizza not
    including the edge.

10 Photos of the Cotton Castle in Pamukkale

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

If you love seeking out surreal sites, that look not of this world, then do we have a destination for you. Pamukkale, or „cotton castle“ in Turkish, is an unreal little village that has some of the most spectacular turquoise water terraces you will ever lay eyes on. For thousands of years, people have come here to bath in the hot springs. There are 17 of them in all that range in temperature from 35 °C (95 °F) to 100 °C (212 °F). What makes this site so breathtaking, however, is how the pools look against the white limestone mountains. The terraces are made of travertine, a form of limestone deposited by the thermal waters.

For those looking to take a dip, sadly you’re out of luck. As world traveler Michael Turtle states, „Whereas once you could swim in the travertines, now security guards keep a watchful eye on anyone trying to get too close. Other than a special swimming pool that has been constructed away from the cliffs, Pamukkale is generally to be seen but not touched these days.

„In many ways, that’s to be applauded. The site is a truly remarkable natural phenomenon and it would be a pity if human interference damaged it permanently for future generations.“
