Mind-Bending Interactive Installation Looks to be Straight from TRON and Matrix!

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Hakanai is an interactive installation like no other, as the images are on-stage animations that move in physical patterns according to the rhythm of the live sounds that they follow. In the Japanese language, Hakanai refers to that which is temporary / fragile, evanescent / transient, and in this case, something set between dreams as well as reality.

    Original Quote:

Hakanaï is a solo choreographic performance that unfolds through a series of images in motion. In Japanese Hakanaï denotes that which is temporary and fragile, evanescent and transient, and in this case something set between dreams and reality. While widely associated with nature, the term is now often used to elicit an intangible aspect of the human condition and its precariousness. It encompasses two elements: that concerning the human being as well as that related to dreams. This symbolic relationship is the foundation of the dance composition in which a dancer gives life to a space somewhere between the borders of imagination and reality, through her interactions with the images she encounters. The images are on-stage animations that move in physical patterns according to the rhythm of the live sounds that they follow. The performance’s outcome is the revelation of a digital installation to its audience.

With an all-electric powertrain that uses a lithium-ion battery to power two 2kW motors mounted in the front wheels, the i-ROAD’s battery can be fully recharged from a conventional domestic power supply in a reasonable 3-hours. The „Active Lean“ system uses a lean actuator and gearing mounted above the front suspension member, linked via a yoke to the left and right front wheels. There is also an ECU that calculates the required degree of lean based on steering angle, gyro-sensor and vehicle speed information, with the system automatically moving the wheels up and down in opposite directions, applying lean angle to counteract the centrifugal force of cornering.

Quelle: Ö3.at

Watch live video from Sternwarte_Peterberg on www.twitch.tv

Die nächste totale Sonnenfinsternis gibt es in Österreich erst 2081 (in Kärnten, Vorarlberg, Tirol, Salzburg und in den angrenzenden Teilen der Steiermark) zu sehen. In Wien erst wieder 2227.

The driverless Mercedes-Benz F015 made its debut at CES 2015 in Las Vegas, but it was spotted cruising around San Francisco just a few days ago. To drive itself around safely, it communicates with its surroundings both visually and acoustically, using a laser projection system. When driving, it can project lights on to the road using its LED headlights to let pedestrians know when to cross. There’s also a manual mode should someone want to take over.

„Last Thursday, Mercedes-Benz said the car was driving around the city ‚for running footage and photography for future communication purposes,‘ adding that development is still ‚underway‘.

If the F015 eventually goes into production, its particular specifications could change. It is part of Mercedes‘ vision for urban autonomous driving, which would include ’safe zones‘ for self-driving cars,“ reports The Daily Mail.

The Edible Growth project fits the category “Food for Thought” and is partly created as a form of critical design. I want to show that high-tech food or lab-produced food does not have to be unhealthy, unnatural, and not tasteful. Edible Growth is an example of high-tech but fully natural, healthy, and sustainable food made possible by combining aspects of  nature, science, technology and design. Edible Growth shows real growth, an intensifying flavor and structure, makes smart use of natural processes like fermentation and photosynthesis and lowers the use of  resources.

  • Contact lens with telescope might to increase peripheral vision in Future!

Contact lens with telescope might to increase peripheral vision in Future!

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

A revolutionary new contact lens with a built in telescope could help millions to regain their full sight. Just a wink of one’s eye is enough to zoom in or turn the telescope off, which increases peripheral vision three fold.

The new technology is set to help sufferers of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which can result in the loss of vision in the center of the visual field. This makes it difficult to read and recognize faces.

The 1.55mm thick lens contains an extremely thin, reflective telescope. Small mirrors inside bounce light around, expanding the perceived size of objects and magnifying the view, similar to looking through low-magnification binoculars.

It is very simple to operate with the lens working in conjunction with glasses. A simple wink of the right eye makes the telescope zoom in, while if the user winks with their left eye, then the telescope is turned off. “The most compelling reason why you would want to have this is to help people with serious visual problems, such as macular degeneration, or other retinal illnesses where people have severe vision loss,”said Dr. Eric Tremblay, who is a designer with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, which is based in Lausanne. “In a lot of cases magnification is very useful. So what people usually use are head-mounted telescopes which don’t work for everything,” which was reported by the Daily Telegraph.

The contact lens had an unlikely source for funding, with DARPA, the Pentagon’s research agency providing the cash. They wanted it to be developed to give soldiers a form of bionic vision.

“They were really interested in supervision, but the reality is more tame than that,” said Tremblay at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Jose. So far, only five people have tested the latest version, according to the Guardian.

Mars One, the Dutch-based venture, announced yesterday that it’s slimmed down its list of applicants to just 50 men and 50 women who will compete for the chance to take a one-way trip to the red planet. For those who haven’t been following the Mars One project, they plan to put on a reality-TV competition to select 24 prospective crew members for missions to Mars, starting as early as 2024. Winners would be expected to start up a permanent colony on the Red Planet. Tens of thousands signed up for Mars One consideration in 2013, and the 100 competitors were chosen after going through interviews with chief medical officer Norbert Kraft who says: „Being one of the best individual candidates does not automatically make you the greatest team player, so I look forward to seeing how the candidates progress and work together in the upcoming challenges.“

„Mars One estimates that it will need billions of dollars to conduct its Mars missions, including a robotic rover mission planned for launch in 2018. The money question is the biggest unknown right now, but last year an MIT study concluded that the venture’s plan to send humans to Mars and keep them alive was „overly optimistic“ on technical grounds,“ reports NBC News.

Astrobiologist Dr Milton Wainwright used balloons to collect samples of dust and particles 16 miles up in the Earth’s atmosphere, and in one sample, he found a tiny metal ball that left impact crater in the device. He claims the metal orb, the same width as a human hair and made from titanium, may have been traveling fast as came from outer space. Wainwright says it was found to be oozing a strange material, which is biological and could in fact be a colony of tiny microorganisms.

Dr Wainwright says: „The sphere made an impact crater on the sampling stub. This proves beyond doubt that the particle was travelling at speed from space when it was sampled. Unless of course we can find details of the civilisation that is supposed to have sent it in this respect it is probably an unprovable theory.“

This is the Largest Hubble Image Ever Taken, Views of Andromeda Galaxy!

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

What you’re looking at above is the sharpest and largest Hubble image ever taken. It stretches 48,000 light-years across the Andromeda Galaxy’s disk, and shows more than 100 million stars. This galaxy may be located 2.5 million light-years from Earth, but since Andromeda fills up so much of Hubble’s field of view, it was able to capture incredible detail in its survey of the galaxy. „Hubble traces densely packed stars extending from the innermost hub of the galaxy. Moving out from this central galactic bulge, the panorama sweeps from the galaxy’s central bulge across lanes of stars and dust to the sparser outer disk,“ said a Hubble representative.

According to Space.com, „The panorama was created as part of the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) program. This image was created as a mosaic of 7,398 exposures taken over the course of 411 pointings of the telescope, according to Hubble officials.“

  • New smartphone battery recharges in less than two minutes

New smartphone battery recharges in less than two minutes

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Your next smartphone could charge in less than two minutes.

Since first showing off the lab-based prototype of its ultra-fast battery charger, the company behind the device has moved much closer to making it a reality.

StoreDot, the nanotech startup behind the charger, has a new prototype that is smaller and doesn’t add bulk to the actual smartphone. During Mashable’s demo, the Galaxy S5 battery went from almost empty to 100% in less than two minutes.

It almost sounds too good to be true but StoreDot CEO Doron Myersdorf says it’s because the company took a completely different approach when creating its battery. Rather than trying to improve the capacity of the battery itself, the company redesigned the internal structure of the battery so it can charge rapidly. The tradeoff for this speed is the overall battery life is shorter— the battery I saw will last about five hours.

But by cutting charging time down to a minute or two— Mysersdorf says the final product will have a recharge time of well under two minutes— recharging once or twice a day is a nonissue.

„This is not trivial, it took us a lot of research,“ Mysersdorf said. „This is a design that is trying to achieve something that was not the goal before. Nobody thought about giving you less energy ,everybody thought about giving you more energy.“

There are some caveats. The battery is more expensive than typical batteries and Myersdorf anticipates the battery will add about $50 to the total cost of a phone. And though StoreDot has made prototypes that work with handsets currently on the market, smartphone manufacturers will have to make „some modifications“ to their devices in order to accommodate the battery. This means it will be up to individual companies to take advantage of the technology.

In an instance of life imitating art, a Nike exec confirmed that the company is working on getting its Marty McFly „Back to the Future“ shoe — with Power Laces — out to customers in 2015, the year that they appeared in Back to the Future II.

Speaking at a trade show in Long Beach, California, on Monday, Nike’s innovation chief Tinker Hatfield said the shoe — known as Nike Air MAG — would hit in 2015. He declined to give a release date or pricing info and distribution info, reminding the crowd that there are still „11 and two-thirds months left in 2015,“ according to sneaker blog Nice Kicks.

    Nike

„The anticipation for this release is something that few understand,“ Matt Halfhill, publisher of NiceKicks, told Mashable. „I don’t even know if everyone at Nike realizes just how much demand there is for this shoe.“

Nike has been teasing the release since 2011, when it dropped a video promoting the self-lacing shoes. The company even filed for a patent for the Power Lace technology. At the time, Nike auctioned off 1,500 pairs of the shoes with net proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which funds research to fight Parkinson’s Disease. Fox, who starred in the BTF trilogy, suffers from that disease.

As 2015 rolled around, many revisited BTFII’s predictions for the year. Reddit users also pointed out that Pepsi has a marketing opportunity for 2015 since futuristic bottles of the soft drink appear in the film as well.
