  • Harness the full power of Twitch with Quarterly Insights for Game Developers

Harness the full power of Twitch with Quarterly Insights for Game Developers

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Twitch has an incredible, thriving community. In 2017, we had over 355 billion minutes watched, 2+ million unique monthly broadcasters, and 15+ million unique daily visitors. As a game developer, you might be wondering about the streamers, viewers, and players that make up your game’s Twitch community.

Listing your game on Twitch is the first step in becoming a part of the Twitch community, but growing and engaging your audience takes a little more planning. That’s why Twitch continues to build the tools game developers and publishers need to launch, grow, and keep their game buzzworthy.

Products like Bits, Cheering, Drops, and Extensions help increase adoption, engagement, and monetization. To help you understand your Twitch community and make the most of Twitch products and integrations, today we’re announcing Quarterly Twitch Insights for our game developers.

After we launched Game Developer Analytics, we received feedback that developers wanted to understand the Twitch community around their game so they can continue to grow their audience and optimize their game’s performance. Additionally, we heard that developers want intuitive access to the tools they need to keep their game growing. We designed Quarterly Twitch Insights to provide vital game metrics and re-engagement opportunities, so that you can deploy strategies to accelerate growth.

    What’s in Quarterly Twitch Insights?

For games with more than 300 broadcast minutes, Quarterly Twitch Insights will show developers overall viewership and broadcast metrics for each of their games listed on Twitch. Developers will see the quarterly comparisons for the following metrics:

    • # of hours watched
    • # of unique viewers
    • # of viewing sessions
    • # of hours broadcast
    • # of unique broadcasters
    • # of broadcasting sessions

In addition to viewership, developers will see relevant data that can help them grow their game audience by investing in the right broadcasters with the right Twitch products. For instance, Quarterly Twitch Insights provide developers a view of broadcasters who are trending on a game title, how active a community is during the streams, what other content the community is watching, game growth by geography, and opportunities to re-engage streamers through Twitch services like Bounty Board.

Say you noticed that a your game is getting a lot of streams over a quarter, but there isn’t much engagement in the channel. What can you do? Enterprising developers can learn about growth and re-engagement features like Drops and start creating campaigns to reward viewers with in-game items to generate some buzz.

Quarterly Twitch Insights highlight popular Extensions used in games and also show developers how to get started with Extensions — in case they have a great idea to create a new engagement mechanism tailored specifically to their community. More than just data, Quarterly Twitch Insights harnesses all that Twitch offers to create increasingly awesome experiences.

    How It Works

Once you log into the Twitch games dashboard, navigate to the Games tab and you will see all your listed games. You can view Quarterly Insights and also download our existing Daily Overview Report for your game. When you view your game’s quarterly insights, it will default to insights for the most recent quarter available. As of today, you will see your games’ Q2 2018 metrics. Moving forward, you’ll receive a new report each quarter and continue to see quarter-over-quarter performance.

Games with over 300 minutes broadcast will receive custom analytics unique to their game, along with recommendations for Drops campaigns and Extensions that you can deploy in your game. For games with fewer than 300 minutes of broadcast time, developers will receive insights about the Twitch Community at large, along with Drops success stories and other recommendations to help them get started on Twitch.

How do I access Quarterly Twitch Insights?

    To Get Started:

    1. Login to dev.twitch.tv
    2. Navigate to your Games dashboard (Dashboard > Games)
    3. Click on the ‘View Quarterly Insights’ button below each of your game’s Box Art to see the Quarterly Twitch Insights for your game.
    4. Click the dropdown to navigate among Quarterly Twitch Insights as they are available.
    5. Read the technical documentation here.

We’d love to hear what insights your team is looking for to make data-driven decisions about building and growing your Twitch community and what else you would like to see. Please keep your feedback coming in the Insights forum or contact the Twitch Insights team at insights@twitch.tv.

  • Changes to Twitch Prime

    Changes to Twitch Prime

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

When we launched Twitch Prime, we were determined to give streamers and their viewers the best value in gaming. And since then we’ve seen the Twitch community take advantage of Twitch Prime perks like monthly channel subscriptions to support favorite streamers, Free Games with Prime, and in-game loot for games like Fortnite, PUBG, Hearthstone, and more. On top of everything you get through Amazon Prime, this year alone we’ve offered members more than $1,000 worth of games and loot.

As we have continued to add value to Twitch Prime, we have also re-evaluated some of the existing Twitch Prime benefits. As a result, universal ad-free viewing will no longer be part of Twitch Prime for new members, starting on September 14.

Twitch Prime members with monthly subscriptions will continue to get ad-free viewing until October 15. If you already have an annual subscription, or if you upgrade to an annual subscription before September 14, you will continue with ad-free viewing until your next renewal date.

All other Twitch Prime benefits, like monthly channel subs, monthly games and loot, and chat badges are not changing.

    But…why?

Advertising is an important source of support for the creators who make Twitch possible. This change will strengthen and expand that advertising opportunity for creators so they can get more support from their viewers for doing what they love. We want Twitch to remain a place where anyone can enjoy one-of-a-kind interactive entertainment, and ads allow us to continue making Twitch the best place for creators to build communities around the things they love and make money doing it.

Is ad-free viewing still possible on Twitch?

An ad-free viewing experience is still possible! All Twitch viewers can get ad-free viewing across all channels by subscribing to Twitch Turbo (read about Turbo right here). Additionally, Twitch Prime subscribers can still get channel-specific ad-free viewing as part of Prime by using your monthly subscription token on a channel that has ad-free viewing for subscribers turned on.

    More of what matters

Twitch Prime is still, and will always be, packed with premium benefits you can’t get anywhere else. We’re just getting started, and the community can continue to expect more and better free games with Prime and in-game loot every month, monthly channel subscriptions, exclusive badges, along with new benefits and surprises. And with your Twitch Prime membership you can still take advantage of all the other Amazon Prime benefits, like free two-day shipping and access to Prime Video and Prime Music¹.

Thanks to every Twitch Prime member for supporting Twitch and your favorite streamers. We’ll see you in chat.

Join TwitchDev, AWS, and GameSparks before PAX West

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Looking for something interesting to attend on August 30 — between PAX Dev and PAX West? Join TwitchDev, GameSparks, and Amazon Web Services to learn how to grow your game community and use analytics to expand even faster.

Here are a few reasons to join us:

    1. Grow your community

You want people to learn about your game and Twitch is one of the best ways to make it happen. But this isn’t going to happen on its own.

At this event, learn how to bring your game to the top of the pile for your community. Take advantage of Twitch Extensions and the Twitch API to make the experience as immersive as possible and produce data about your game and engaged viewers.

    2. Build better games

As your community grows, wouldn’t you like to understand how to increase the fun? Or the areas people like to play, a pinch point in the game play that frustrates newer players, or even understanding the demographics of your audience?

At this event, you’ll hear how harnessing the power of AWS can help you ingest player data on the fly via GameSparks or your own Business Intelligence (BI) tools for reporting stats on what is really happening in your game. Use these insights to develop games that resonate better with your core audience.

    3. Connect with your peers

Not only will you hear from experts in the gaming industry, but you’ll also be able to have your questions answered, meet other developers, and get help with your specific use cases.

Nippon Nation 2018 – Wiens Convention für alle Nerds – 21. bis 22. Juli im MQ Wien

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Celebrate Fred Rogers’ 90th birthday on Twitch

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Bust out your cardigans, grab your trolley ticket, and fire up your imagination, because Twitch is heading back to the land of make believe.

To celebrate Mister Rogers’ 90th birthday and the 50th anniversary of the debut of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, we’re streaming a very special Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood marathon, and we’ve invited a bunch of Partners to co-stream the celebration with us. On March 20th at 10am PT, join us on /misterrogers, or your favorite streamer’s co-stream, as we watch 90 of the most popular episodes of the show followed by a complete run through the show’s entire history…all 856 episodes. For several weeks we’ll make the journey from black and white to color, we’ll laugh, we’ll cry, and we’ll learn to love each other and ourselves. Mister Rogers would want it that way.

A marathon of this magnitude requires a host of similarly epic proportions, so none-other than Futuremangaming will be your emcee throughout the run. He’ll be dropping in at various times so share his Mister Rogers memories. Co-streaming is also enabled for everyone, so all you streamers out there should feel free to co-stream from your neighborhoods. Here’s how you do it: Once the marathon kicks off, all you have to do is set your game to “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” capture the stream on twitch.tv/misterrogers, and you’re good to go.

Here’s a list of Partners who will be co-streaming and when:

    Tuesday, March 20

    Wednesday, March 21

    Thursday, March 22

The celebration begins on March 20 at 10am PT. We can’t wait to cozy up with everyone in chat.

    Introducing a new docs experience

We’ve refreshed the developer documentation and API reference experience to help you find the guides and materials needed to rapidly deliver apps to your users and the Twitch community. This release is an early step toward delivering a developer experience that inspires and delights you to create with our products.

Rather than myself talking about it, check it out at dev.twitch.tv/docs.

We strive to create a docs experience that responds to customer feedback and incorporates idioms common to best-in-class documentation apps. Here are some highlights from this release:

    • Search: Yes! You can search across all of our documentation, and we’ll match by title, content, or API references.
    • Sticky navigation: As you browse content, you’ll know exactly where you are in the document with a helpful indicator. Having the navigation accessible at all times should make it easier to hop back and forth, and get what you need.
    • Three-column reference browsing: We’ve pulled out sample request and and response returns for every API method (including V5), making it easy to try our capabilities as you build iteratively for your users. Here’s an example which documents the method to GET users.
    • Mobile-friendly: Open docs on an iPad, phone, or other device in case you need a quick reference in a smaller viewport.

In future releases, we hope to make it easier to get to “Hello, World!” and success with our products. Be on the lookout for more in the coming months.

We’re happy to hear any feedback on our docs, website, or products in general. Start a discussion on our forums or mention us on Twitter.

  • March Cosplay Showcase!

    March Cosplay Showcase!

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Convention season is picking up steam, and cosplayers are busy working on their next projects. If you’re looking for inspiration or tips on a costume you’re working on, check out the three great cosplayers we’re featuring this month!

Wonder Woman | James Bissett Photography

    Artyfakes

Artyfakes was influenced from her beginnings in LARPing at the age of 12. After falling in love with Skyrim, she discovered the wonderful world of cosplay. Her current project is pretty ambitious: making the props and outfits from Fortnite! Artyfakes tends to consider her current project her favorite cosplay, however her Wonder Woman holds a special place in her heart as when she wears it at events, it makes such a positive impact. “Kids think I’m her which is one of the most rewarding feelings.” You can join Artyfakes and her dad who both work on making props and costumes together on stream and have fun with a welcoming community!

Pearl (Steven Universe) | Matthew Sperzel Photography

    Sharkbaroness

Shark Baroness first got into cosplay eight years ago due to her love of anime and discovering cosplay through online forums and communities. She’s currently working on several current pieces involving Asami from The Legend of Korra, but her favorite cosplay is Prince Sidon from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. “I did my own take on a humanoid/Hylian version of him and I loved getting creative with the design and the details.” If you’re looking to chat with others on learning more about cosplay or perfecting your techniques, then join Shark Baroness and her community for some fun and positivity!

Erza Scarlet (Fairy Tail) | Photography: XWicked Games

    ValkyrjaCosplay

Like many, her love of costumes and geeky pastimes inspired Valkyrja to get into cosplay six years ago. So far her favorite cosplay that she’s done was Erza Scarlet Heart Kreuz 1 armor from Fairy Tail. “The breastplate was such an complex piece to build and after remaking the foam base three times, I finally got something that flatters my body shape. I am extremely proud of how the complete costume looks and I feel so powerful when I wear it.” Join her and her wonderful community to see Valkyrja streaming her current project: Katalina’s SSR armor from Granblue Fantasy, among other projects!

  • Introducing analytics for game developers

    Introducing analytics for game developers

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

As a game developer, we know it’s crucial for you to understand how your game is performing on Twitch in order to create the most engaging experiences for your community. We’ve heard you ask for insights on how to better integrate with Twitch, make your game more streamable, and encourage more creators to share your game with their viewers.

As a result of this community feedback, we’re launching a self-service analytics solution for game developers. Starting today, you can access data about your game via our new Game Analytics API or your games dashboard on the Twitch Developer site. These metrics will help you answer questions like:

    • What does my presence look like on Twitch?
    • How many creators are streaming my game?
    • How many viewers are watching those streams?
    • How long are they streaming and watching my game?

We’ve received great feedback from our beta participants about how these game analytics are helping to measure and optimize performance:

“At CD PROJEKT RED we use data to power our online strategy and are very excited about having official analytics from Twitch. We’re looking forward to more robust insights about our Twitch community so we can understand our broadcasters, viewers, and competitive events.” — Michal Janczewski, Online Strategy Manager, CD PROJEKT RED

“These insights provide an extremely comprehensive view of our Twitch ecosystem. By having such an amazing tool, Tencent can best serve our community as a developer.” — Zhelin Dong, Brand Manager, Tencent

“These game analytics are a great way to help us better understand our presence within Twitch and how to better connect with our gaming community. I’m happy to have this data at our fingertips and excited to see how Twitch evolves its insights offering!” — Toni Griswold, Digital Research Analyst, Adult Swim

Show me the data! How do I get started?

There are two ways to access game analytics whenever you want, 24/7.

Game Analytics API: Check out the documentation here.

    Games dashboard:

    1. Login to dev.twitch.tv (or if you haven’t yet connected to the Twitch Developer site and added your game, click here to get started)
    2. Navigate to Dashboard > Games
    3. Click Export CSV data to download your game performance from the last 90 days. We recommend you download your data at least once per month so that you’re able to keep a rolling history of your game’s metrics.

This is just the first step our TwitchDev Insights team is taking to provide you with actionable insights and recommendations for your games. In future iterations, we’ll work towards providing more detailed metrics and an interactive dashboard that will help you understand how to grow your reach on Twitch, create better targeted content, or design in-game and on-Twitch experiences for your community.

Please let us know what you think! Share your feedback with us on the forums or on Twitter.

To tell you more about Devil May Cry HD, here’s Michiteru Okabe from Capcom.

    DEVELOPER COMMENTARY

Hello everyone, hope you’re doing well. My name is Michiteru Okabe, Producer at Capcom. Today I’m honored to talk about our collaboration with Twitch Prime. Starting today, with the upcoming March 13th release of Devil May Cry HD Collection containing the first three installments of the franchise, and together with Twitch Prime, we will be offering the full version of the original Devil May Cry on PC for a limited time. That’s right, you can play the first game now for a full week before the collection is released!

Thanks to the continued support from series’ fans, the Devil May Cry series has been around for 18 years now with the first entry making its debut in 2001. It has since influenced many other titles in the third person action genre as you stylishly thwart everything in your wake as the devil hunter Dante.

I first encountered this franchise as a fan myself, so it makes me nostalgic just thinking back when I first played it. I remember checking out the announcement trailer back in the day and being immediately entranced by the graphical quality, stylish action, and the epic scenes like the giant Griffon making its grand entrance.

Whether you’re playing it again or if you’re checking it out for first time, Devil May Cry is a masterpiece that is sure to keep you on your toes.

    Redemption Instruction:

    1. Claim the original Devil May Cry here

    2. Install the Twitch Desktop app

  • Community Guidelines FAQ Update

    Community Guidelines FAQ Update

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

    Hey Twitch Community,

Last month we announced updates to Twitch’s Community Guidelines. You asked some insightful questions about what impact the changes will have. As we approach March 5th, the date when enforcement begins, we want to give you answers so that you feel confident that you have a complete understanding of the updates.

What does Twitch consider hateful conduct?

Hateful conduct is any content or activity that promotes, encourages, or facilitates discrimination, denigration, objectification, harassment, or violence based on the following characteristics, and is strictly prohibited:

    • Race, ethnicity, or national origin
    • Religion
    • Sex, Gender, or Gender Identity
    • Sexual Orientation
    • Age
    • Disability or Medical Condition
    • Physical Characteristics
    • Veteran Status

Twitch will consider a number of factors to determine the intent and context of any reported hateful conduct. You can read more on Twitch’s harassment and hateful conduct policies in our Learn More article.

What do I do about people being harassing or hateful in my chat while I’m offline or AFK?

We ask that streamers make a good faith effort to moderate their chat with tools like AutoMod, building a moderation team, and/or by utilizing the numerous third party tools available.

So long as you are not turning a blind eye to content or conduct that violates the Community Guidelines, you should feel confident that no punitive actions will be taken on your channel.

Learn more with our How to Manage Harassment in Chat help article.

What should I do about viewers exploiting elements of my stream like text-to-speech to harass, be hateful, or post sexual content?

As a streamer, you are responsible for the content on your stream. Twitch asks you to make a good faith effort to moderate interactive elements of your stream such as setting a word filter or a notification delay to give yourself a chance to moderate incoming notifications. Ultimately, you will have to decide what steps are right for your stream and your community’s behavior in order to abide by the Community Guidelines. Remember to temporarily disable or mute any unmoderated interactive elements such as text-to-speech if you step away from your computer.

To what extent am I responsible for my community?

Creators are role models and leaders of the communities they create or foster around them. Creators should consider the consequences of their statements and actions of their audiences; we ask that you make a good faith effort to quell any efforts from those in your community to harass others.

Twitch should not be used to incite, encourage, promote, facilitate, or organize hateful conduct or harassment, whether on or off Twitch. We will suspend communities, organizations, and individuals that do so.

Learn More with our article on Hateful Conduct & Harassment.

Why is Twitch moderating off-Twitch conduct?

We recognize that harassment against Twitch community members can sometimes originate from off-Twitch conduct. Our desire to moderate verifiable off-Twitch harassment stems from our belief that ignoring conduct when we are able to verify and attribute it to a Twitch account compromises one of our most important goals: every Twitch user can bring their whole authentic selves to the Twitch community without fear of harassment.

How is Twitch moderating off-Twitch conduct?

Reporters of harassment must submit links to evidence with their report.

The moderation team will only take action if:

    • The links provided are verifiable
    • The content can be directly tied to the reported Twitch user
    • The target of harassment is another Twitch user, group of Twitch users, or Twitch employees
    • The moderation team determines the conduct violates our policies

Twitch will not actively monitor other websites or services for violations of our Community Guidelines, nor will we be acting on off-Twitch content created prior to March 5, 2018.

Learn more about our policies on hateful conduct or harassment.

What clothing is appropriate for my stream?

Given the variety of content and activities creators engage in, an explicit dress code would be unreasonably restrictive. Streaming is a public activity that reaches a global audience of many ages and cultures, and as such we prohibit nudity and sexual conduct. When evaluating reports for sexual conduct, attire is just one factor we will use in making a determination on whether conduct is acceptable.

We recommend creators wear attire that would be publicly appropriate for the context, location, and activity they are broadcasting. For example, workout clothes would be appropriate for a fitness stream and a swimsuit would be appropriate for a stream from a public beach.

Learn more about guidelines on Nudity & Attire.

I’m an artist and I want to paint a nude portrait not intended to be sexual. Can I stream my nude figure drawing?

As we do not yet provide sufficient tools for viewers to limit their exposure to nudity and mature content, artistic and educational nudity are not allowed. We are working on ways to make this possible in the future.

What about activities such as body painting and dancing?

Body painting, dancing, and other creative activities that do not violate our policies are welcome on Twitch. If flagged as potential sexually suggestive content, we will consider the context and intent of the content to determine whether the reported conduct violates our policies.

Learn more about our policies on Suggestive Content.

What is the policy on retroactive enforcement of content on Twitch created prior to March 5, 2018? Am I expected to delete everything?

Starting March 5th, 2018, all content on the site is subject to the new guidelines. We expect creators to make a good faith effort to remove any hateful, harassing, and sexually suggestive content from their channel.

However, if reported, content that violates the new guidelines and that was created before the new guidelines come into effect will be removed without suspension, but we reserve the right to exercise discretion on severe violations. For information about how to review and delete individual Clips and VODs, check out their respective help.twitch.tv articles: How to Manage Clips & VOD on Twitch.

  • The NBA G League gets even Twitchier

The NBA G League gets even Twitchier

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

When the NBA G League arrived on Twitch last year, we told you more cool extension features were coming in 2018. Well, we checked the calendar and it turns out that it’s been 2018 for like, two whole months. So today we’re introducing all kinds of cool new stuff. Here’s a look at how NBA G League basketball on Twitch is heating up.

First, we’re introducing new ways to earn Loyalty Points through Muxy’s NBA G League extension. As always, you can sit back and relax knowing you’ll earn points just by watching games, but if you’re ready to take it to the next level you can pick the player you think will fill the stat sheet with the Boost Player function. Choose wisely and you’ll earn points based on that player’s performance. You can also earn points by participating in Quarterly Polling with your predictions during every game. Your points will add up all season, so get out there and rule the leaderboard. For more info on Loyalty Points and everything else having to do with the extension, you can check out all the details here.

For you statheads out there, we’re also expanding the on-stream statistics to include comparisons between players and teams. They’re all still updated in real-time, right on the video player.

NBA G League games are streaming all season long on Twitch, so make sure to tune in and get in on the action. And then, as they say in the sportsball biz, hit the showers.

  • Get started building Extensions on mobile

Get started building Extensions on mobile

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Since the launch of Extensions last September, we’ve been blown away by the community’s response and contributions. The Twitch developer community has created over 150 Extensions for streamers to use, and over 2000 of you have expressed interest in building more!

Today, we’re excited to announce that we’re bringing Extensions to our Twitch mobile apps starting in late March. As more and more of the community accesses Twitch on their phones and tablets, enabling Extensions on mobile will significantly increase the reach of your Extensions while allowing streamers to share a consistent experience with their viewers across all platforms — this has been one of the most requested features from the streaming community.

As promised when we shared our RFC (Request For Comments) on mobile Extensions, you’ll have a head start on building a mobile experience for your Extension, so that it’s mobile-ready by the time it rolls out to all Twitch app users. Starting today, you can access our design and technical guidelines to help you get started.

    So how does it work?

Extensions with mobile support will occupy the same area as chat in our mobile apps. When a user watches a channel with a mobile Extension, they can view and interact with it after tapping on the Extensions icon. If the streamer has more than one Extension activated on their channel, the viewer can swipe left and right between multiple Extensions or navigate using the top tabs.

Streamers will know which Extensions support mobile via a badge in the Extensions Manager.

Extension on mobile in portrait mode.
Extension on mobile in landscape mode.

To enable your Extension on mobile devices, you’ll need to provide a mobile-specific front end file for your Extension. The Extension’s format on web (i.e. video overlay or panel) will not impact how the Extension is presented on mobile so you’ll want to think about how to develop a responsive experience. Over the next few days, you’ll be able to create a test version of your Extension, enable mobile support, and see that test version live in the Twitch app on version 5.10 or higher on iOS or Android prior to the rollout to all Twitch mobile app users in late March.

This is the first of many new features we’re working on to create access to Extensions in more places. We’ll share more about our roadmap in an upcoming live stream on March 13, and we’d love to answer your questions and hear your feedback — save the date!

If you have any burning questions before then, please reach out to us in the forums or talk to other Twitch developers in the chat server! And of course, don’t forget to check out the documentation to get started developing mobile Extensions today.
