  • Sony launches PS4 + Vita bundle in Europe

Sony launches PS4 + Vita bundle in Europe

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Sony UK has worked with retailers to encourage what it calls a „soft bundle“ that includes both consoles. Some shops won’t be able to offer the deal because of PS4 stock availability, but the expectation is most will from tonight alongside the launch of the PS4 in Europe.

„We’re working with our retail partners to put across that proposition as well as we can,“ Sony UK boss Fergal Gara told Eurogamer.

„It’ll come to market in a few different shapes and guises. You may walk in and get a great deal on ‚buy a Vita when bought with‘ type deal. So if you buy a PS4 you can get a Vita for X. And others will say, well here’s the Ultimate Bundle and you get all those bits in it.

„But as a base price point, in other words for the two consoles, we expect the gamer to be able to pick that up for under £500. It’s not a hard bundle pack at this point in time. It’s us working with the retailer to effectively deliver a soft bundle.“

Gara said the PS4, which goes for £349 on its own, and the Vita, which you can pick up for around £150 depending on the model type, will be bundled together for a little under £500 – so we’re looking at a saving of around £10.

Since the announcement of the PS4 earlier this year, Sony has been keen to push its connectivity with the Vita handheld. Perhaps the most eye-catching feature in this regard is Remote Play, which uses Gaikai streaming technology to allow you to play PS4 games on a Vita.

It was this feature, Gara said, that helped convince PlayStation to bundle the two together this Christmas.

„Our stimulus to do that is mainly the fact that once we got our hands on Remote Play we thought, wow, it really is real and good, and that deserves a shout,“ he said. „And of course it’s a PlayStation point of difference.

„We think, for four hundred and something pounds you’re getting two consoles, if you get PlayStation Plus with that then you’ve got an Instant Game Collection for both. So now they’re both great companion devices and they’re standalone devices. Why wouldn’t we underline that and highlight that point of difference? We really believe in it.“

As for availability, the PS4 and Vita bundles will start to show up from tonight. „It’s starting to happen now,“ Gara said this morning.

„If you look at offers at retail from launch – and others may introduce it slightly later – but over the coming weeks. It has to be a little bit determined by stock and the allocations and the pre-orders. If a retailer has all of their stock up to a certain date pre-ordered, they can’t offer this right away. They have to come into some free stock.

So, slightly staggered timing. But the offers to buy a Vita when you buy a PS4 will be live as of tonight.“

Gara added that while shops will get creative with their offers, Sony’s expectation is you won’t have to pay more than £499 for the two consoles.

„Retailers will package things around it or add certain things in. But as a base price we think that’s quite compelling.“

We are aware that users are experiencing some disruption to the PSN service. To minimise the inconvenience we have suspended the “redeem voucher” functionality whilst we investigate further. Unfortunately this means that money cards, product vouchers, PlayStation Plus vouchers, PS3-PS4 upgrade vouchers and any other vouchers for digital content are not redeemable at this stage. Other PSN features such as log-in, online multi-player gaming, PlayStation Plus trial, PS Store (excluding voucher redemption), trophies, messages, friends etc. are all available.

We apologies and will provide an update to this announcement soon.

PS5 and new Xbox coming in 5 – 6 years

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Have you already bought your new Playstation 4 or Xbox One? Well, you should know that according to executive vice president of EA Studios, the Playstation 5 and the new Xbox (Xbox Two?) will arrive in five – six years.

    icon_xl (2)

Patrick Soderlund said to MCV that:

„This console cycle [360/PS3] may have gone on a little bit longer than I would have wanted. At the same time, you have seen games like The Last of Us and GTA V at the end of a cycle which perhaps you would not have expected a few years ago. But a five, six year gap is what I expect going forward.“

  • Sony: PS4 lifecycle may be shorter than PS3

Sony: PS4 lifecycle may be shorter than PS3

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

n an interview with TechRadarSony UK boss Fergal Gara hinted at a shorter PS4 lifecycle than the PS3.

According to him, this is probably „a sign of the times“ and „how much has changed in seven years“:

„I think there’s reasons to believe that the next cycle might be shorter in markets such as the UK,“ he said.

„It’s probably a sign of the times and how much has changed in seven years, but I think the willingness and the appetite to pick up new technology fast has probably changed quite a bit.“

However, he added that it was too early to tell what the future will hold for the console:

„We’re going to have a much better feel for it once we’re a good few months in and we can see how the dynamics are emerging.“

But although initial uptake of the PS4 has been fierce, new contenders such on the horizon such as Valve promise to make this a very different generation to the last.

„What we do know is that the uptake [of the PS4] is going to be very sharp,“ said Gara. „Does that mean this is going to be a much bigger cycle? Maybe. Or it might mean that it’s just a bit more compressed into the first few years, that the latter years are a little softer.“

The PS4 launches this weekend in Europe, Australia and Latin America.

Xbox One and PS4 install times compared

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Site Kotaku made a test of the install times of both new next-gen consoles. They plugged in aPS4 into an Xbox One’s TV input and watched them race to install a game.

    icon_xl
And well, there’s a BIG difference in the two systems:

We tested six multiplatform games on both consoles and every time, the PS4 was under a minute while the Xbox One install was several minutes long and required downloading an update before beginning the installation. When you include downloading those updates for each Xbox One game that happen in the background on PS4, the install times can get as high as fifteen minutes before you can even launch the game.

    The full results:

    Assassin’s Creed IV:
Xbox One (offline, no update): 5 minutes 50 seconds
Xbox One (with update, fastest connection): 7 minutes 2 seconds
Xbox One (with update, 10Mbps connection): 10 minutes 32 seconds
    PS4: 42 seconds

The rest of these were tested on our office Wi-Fi which is around 9-11Mbps. It may have been faster on a wired connection, but you can compare your own connection speed here. These are our results:

    Need For Speed Rivals:
    XBO: 09:25 (including update)
    PS4: 00:32

    Just Dance 2014:

  • Twitch on PlayStation 4 – 7 Tips for New PS4 Broadcasters Detailed

Twitch on PlayStation 4 – 7 Tips for New PS4 Broadcasters Detailed

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s been less than a week since PS4 launched with Twitch broadcasting functionality, and the feedback we’ve been getting from new broadcasters has been phenomenal!

To help new streamers ease into the Twitch community – which is already 45 million members strong – here are some tips for first-time broadcasters:

    • Be a curator of conversations: Drive conversation with your viewers. Talk about everything and don’t just focus your conversation about the game or games in general. Talk about life, pop culture, music and everything in between.

    • Go live longer than an hour: It might sound shocking at first, but Twitch is long-form entertainment. Our broadcasters stream for hours, so find a sweet spot and before you know it you’ll be rocking a 24-hour broadcast in celebration of a new game release.

    • Find a genre: When laying the foundation for your channel, don’t feel the need to be the best at every game. However, if you are good at one genre (FPS, Platforming, Stealth…), focus on that until you get the swing for engaging between chat and gaming at the same time. It can be a challenge to be good at both, but hang in there – you’ll eventually kick off those training wheels.

    • Have a regular broadcast schedule: This way your viewers can become aware of when a broadcast will happen. You want to post this schedule everywhere you can. The more informed the community is with your shows, the more people will show up.

    • Try to have a camera and mic on: People want to see and hear you! There’s something very special about having a broadcaster looking right at the camera and talking directly to viewers, live. Plus, this will increase your viewership.

    • Engage in the Twitch Universe: Broadcasting is built around community, whether it’s your community or someone else’s, so join other channels that you share a common interest in. This will give you crossover viewership.

    • Authentic voice is essential: Go out there have fun! The more authentic your approach is, the more your viewers will connect with you.

  • How Light Comes Alive in Dying Light on PS4 / PlayStation 4

How Light Comes Alive in Dying Light on PS4 / PlayStation 4

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

To quote: Hi, I’m Maciej Jamrozik, the Lead Technical Artist at Techland, developer of the upcoming first-person, action survival-horror game Dying Light.

Light and shadow play a crucial role in Dying Light. They affect not only the gameplay and its day-and-night cycle, but also the visuals.

This video illustrates how the game uses a physically-based lighting system, which means that light is generated in accordance to the actual laws of physics.

This in turn assures that lighting looks convincing and cohesive, regardless of the conditions and surroundings. It’s especially important as Dying Light features a variety of locations and environments, from open spaces to claustrophobic rooms, as well as a range of weather conditions and changing time of day.

One of the most important parameters of indirect lighting is „roughness,“ which defines the level of smoothness and dullness of a surface.

Implementing our new physics model eliminated the limitation of using only preset groups of materials, which translates to much more varied and faithful representations of materials in the game. Our artists now have full freedom over the level of roughness on objects, and can save the result in a form of texture.

On PS4, we use the console’s additional horsepower to generate dynamic reflections. Similarly, they make use of the „roughness“ to diffuse and reduce the impact of the specular reflection. It helps render the given material in the most realistic way possible.

Dying Light boasts a dynamic weather system, together with a real-time passage of time. That’s why indirect lighting data, which is stored in so called environment light probes, has to change according to the current weather and the time of day.

These two factors can change independently. That’s why we compute the Spherical Harmonix function offline for all weather conditions and times of day, and then it is dynamically interpolated in the game.

The physically based lighting model influenced what all wet surfaces look like. When it’s raining, wet surfaces get increasingly shiny through the modification of the roughness parameter. We emphasize that weather conditions, like time of day, change gradually, and it applies also to all wet surfaces. As a result, a surface becomes wet only if it is actually exposed to rain.

Another field directly improved by the new physics model is water. It’s a crucial feature, since Dying Light allows the player to swim and dive. Water in the game can have varied levels of transparency, which affects light diffusion.

Moreover, water has an effect on all objects immersed in it. We modify the parameter of roughness so that they look wet, but only to the point of immersion. The rest above the water level remains dry.

All the above improvements, and many other changes, are to make sure that Dying Light will deliver an unprecedented visual fidelity that will surprise you with its level of realism. Next year, when you’re leaping between roofs and trying to lose the zombie horde behind you, take a moment to appreciate all the great lighting effects around you.

Just don’t stop for too long – zombie bites hurt!

    DualShock 4 (DS4) PlayStation 4 / PS4 Controller Teardown, Details

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Following up on the PlayStation 4 / PS4 Teardown, today frank26080115 has made available a teardown in pictures of the DualShock 4 (DS4) PlayStation 4 / PS4 controller and details below.

    To quote: DualShock 4

    Hardware

    Teardown photo album: imgur.com/a/ytRW5

The USB port and LED are on one separate board, connected using a flat flexible cable, this cable is connected to a vertical FFC connector that does not have a locking mechanism.

The touchpad sensor is also detachable, connected using a flat flexible cable, this cable is connected to the main PCB using a connector that has a flip-up locking mechanism.

The speaker is not removable and it connects to the main PCB using some raised contacts.

    The battery is 3.65V 1000mAH Li-ion.

Main microcontroller is a Spansion MB9BF002, a ARM Cortex M3 core, BGA package. The reset and SWD signals might be exposed to test points, I am not sure.

The Bluetooth module shows „8LA18366“ and „GS-WCM-01“ (or maybe it’s „GS-WCN-01“) and „VR2.0“. There is also a QR code that I can’t decipher yet. There are a lot of test points near it.

There’s a chip marked with „BD9200“ (in QFN 32 pin footprint) that might be a PMIC because it has some thick traces around it, plus a big inductor. One of the pins near it read 6V, might be for the motor.

There’s a shiny small square chip left of the left analog stick, it is marked with „7710“ „325A1“, I have no idea what this is, but there’s some differential signals coming out of it, it might be USB, the activity stops when I disconnect the USB cable. I think this is connected to the USB port. I suspect this is a OTG chip.

There’s a rectangular (maybe LGA) chip on the bottom side on the left, marked with „134“ „A1322“ „333“, possibly a sensor. It’s got some sort of latch signal around it, or maybe it’s a weird clock. It’s slow and doesn’t seem like a bus. Or it could be a shift register and it’s reading blank because I’m not pressing buttons.

There’s a QFN 32 pin chip marked with „WM18016“ (the M could be a N, the 6 could be a G) „36A0LM6“ dead center on the bottom side of the PCB. It has a sine wave logo on it (possibly Wolfson Microelectronics). It is near the audio stuff but it is also near where all the buttons connect. There are 5 test points near it. It appears to be communicating with SPI with constant activity. There’s also two resistors that look like I2C pull-up resistors, and there appears to be constant I2C traffic.

Some buttons are active low, some are active high (maybe only the thumbstick push buttons). The sheet of flexible circuit for the buttons are active low.

  • PS4 Backwards Compatibility for PS3 Games

PS4 Backwards Compatibility for PS3 Games

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

It has been officially confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will not support PlayStation 3 games natively. This means that any retail (i.e. disc-based) or digitally downloaded games from the Playstation Network will not be playable on the new console due to the x86 architecture.

In a roundtable with journalists after the PlayStation 4 reveal, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios, elaborated further on the question of backwards compatibility.

In the IGN article linked above states:

„In a roundtable conversation with journalists, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios noted that PS3 games of both the retail and downloadable variety will not be compatible with PlayStation 4, at least not natively. In other words, your PS3 discs won’t work in the new console nor will the games you downloaded.

There’s a catch, though: emulation. The PlayStation 3 doesn’t read PlayStation 2 discs (at least not anymore), but it can play PS2 games via the PlayStation Store in an emulated environment. Yoshida concedes that this is possible for PlayStation 4 supporting legacy PlayStation consoles as well. Indeed, the Gaikai presentation during PlayStation 4’s reveal touched on this “everything, everywhere” mentality. But for now, downloaded PS3 games won’t work “unless, somehow, some games work on emulation. And the easiest thing, technically, would be to make PSone games work on PS4 with emulation. But we’re not talking about our emulation plans as yet.”

In short, “There are two ways [to play legacy content]: emulation or cloud services [from Gaikai]. But native support [of digital games from PS3], no, sorry. It doesn’t work.”

    Gaikai and Cloud Streaming

Based off of statements made at Sony’s PS4 reveal event, it is believed that Sony will be using Gaikai’s capabilities to provide access to games from previous PlayStation consoles through Gaikai’s cloud streaming capabilities.[1]

At this point, it is not known whether this will require players to re-purchase games they already own, although this seems quite likely.

Visit IGN’s PS4 Gaikai Integration wiki to learn more.

    Communications

Sony has confirmed that users across the PlayStation Network will be able to communicate back and forth on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. The catch is that only text-based communications will be delivered across the platforms. Any and all voice or video messages will go undelivered between the two consoles.

NBA Live 14 executive producer Sean O’Brien wants players to know that the development team has „heard the feedback“ and has a plan to make it „a better game as quickly as we can“.

According to him, NBA Live 14 hasn’t “gotten the kind of early feedback we had hoped for,” but said that updates are coming. The game is trending at a 45 Metacritic rating on PlayStation 4 right now.

Here’s the full Open Letter from O’Brien posted at the EA Sports site:

I’m not going to lie; it’s been a rough week. As you can imagine, this isn’t exactly the NBA LIVE comeback story we were hoping for this year.

We hear loud and clear that some of you are disappointed in various aspects of NBA LIVE 14, and I’m sorry if the game doesn’t live up to your expectations. Looking at your feedback, we have laid out a plan to make NBA LIVE 14 a better game as quickly as we can.

First, you’ve told us that the game is too hard to learn, and that the only way to figure it out is through frustrating trial-and-error. As a result, we are working on improving the way the game teaches the controls and on-boards new users. We realize that every single one of you is a new user and know we need to make the game easier to understand and simpler to pick up and play.

We’re also conducting an ongoing series of Twitch Live Streams to teach the skills that will help make your game experience a better one. We have our producers and designers online seven days a week to answer your questions and to offer other helpful game advice. Additionally, we’ve posted Controller Guide, Perfecting Your Style and Levels of the Dribble blogs on the NBA LIVE website which we hope will help you with basic offense, defense, play calling and more.

We’re not going to stop there. You’ve also let us know that you’re disappointed by the graphics and animations, and I can tell you that we are committed to making drastic and immediate improvements. In order to get gameplay up and running this year we had to prioritize. We felt authentic gameplay, control and the connected experience would provide the best foundation for the future. As a result, game visuals and animation polish suffered. Improvements on these fronts are also in development now for NBA LIVE 14. You will notice in the coming weeks and months that the game’s visuals and animation will improve significantly.

A goal from the start was to stay relevant to the ongoing NBA season and evolve your gaming experience. We’ve been hearing that you love LIVE Season, and many of you are having a lot of fun with BIG Moments. We’re really glad to hear you’re enjoying the mode, and rest assured we will continue updating LIVE Season with new BIG Moments and NBA Rewind games every single day of the season. We’ve also gotten a lot of great feedback on LIVE Ultimate Team, and we’ve still got some big announcements and major additions coming down the road, so stick around for that.

Let me wrap up with this; for those of you who have supported us throughout this development cycle and continue to have our backs now, thank you. We’ve got a lot of work to do; I’ve got a lot of work to do. It started 12 months ago, and continues until we build this franchise bigger and better than it ever was. This is just the first chapter in the NBA LIVE comeback story.
