  • Astroneer is a Co-op Space Sandbox Launching on PS4 This Fall

Astroneer is a Co-op Space Sandbox Launching on PS4 This Fall

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hello! Joe from System Era Softworks here to share some news about something that many of you have been asking for! Our first game, Astroneer, is coming to PS4 on November 15, and is available to pre-order right now! We couldn’t be more excited to join the amazing PS4 roster, and we’ve just released a trailer to celebrate!

    Creating Space Personalities

Now that the announcement is official, we wanted to take a look back at the creative process behind one of the most recognizable things in Astroneer: our space suits! The creation of Astroneer suits is a multi-step process, combining not only the art and visual presentation, but also animation, to give them all distinct personalities like this:

For suit creation, we worked very closely with an amazing Concept Artist and 3D artist, Heather Penn. After the first four suits in the game were decided on, she was tasked with creating a new round of suits for each planet type in the game. She ran with that idea, and started to envision space suits for all the different environments that Astroneers might encounter on their travels. Heather put together this image of the overall workflow, starting from sketch to final in-game art:

Heather starts with sketches of variations to work out ideas quickly. After refining the sketches to the final version, she then moves to modeling a rough silhouette of the suit’s major features to make sure it works in 3D. Once that is done, she “paints over” the 3D shape, then models the final asset off of that.

    The Process

Some of the earliest sketches we saw of the new suits were mood boards with rough silhouette drawings. These mood boards always included really interesting images to show the inspiration and themes for the suits. One of our favorites incorporated the famous “water bear” photos from a few years back.

As you can see in the above photo, inspiration for Tundra suit came from microorganisms, diving suits, and military style safety armor, among other things. Here is another one, showing that the Arid suit’s design is heavily inspired by real life space suits and astronaut clothing:

After a round of feedback and approval for the rough designs, the real fun began. Heather went to work modeling the suits in 3D from the concepts. She told us a little bit about that process:

“Because I am a concept artist and 3D artist, a lot of the magic happens when I actually convert it. I don’t have to get the (2D) designs perfect…Which is sort of freeing because in the translation from 2D to 3D, something always goes wrong.”

The best example of these happy accidents came during the modeling of the Exotic suit. The original sketches of it were super adorable and we loved them, but once they got to 3D, we realized something really important was missing: A head!

Astroneers need a head so they can move it around and shine their headlamp where they are looking when underground… and Exotic suit’s body was also its head. Heather then created an extremely scientific drawing to illustrate to the team how she would solve that problem:

After we all nearly passed out from immense adorable-ness of this masterpiece, she separated out the “dome” of the suit to be a head that could spin around, and that actually added some really cool options for when animation came into play!

Animating a lot with a little

After the 3D models are finalized, Gene, our animator, takes over and creates an animation skeleton that fits with the suit’s body shape, and then sets out to create unique versions of all of the animations that suits need, like walks, runs, waves, dances, and so on.

Creating distinct and emotive Astroneer suits is actually a big challenge because you never see their faces, and none of them talk (besides the occasional muffled exclamation). But, right from the beginning of the process, Heather often told the team about the head canons she developed alongside the creation of the suits.

In a lot of cases, Gene, our animator, took that guidance and then gave each of the suits distinct body language to reinforce that unspoken personality. For example, Heather told us that she pictured Exotic suit to be a clumsy, pigeon-toed scientist, and if you look at the final animations, that inspiration is unmistakably there:

Gene is also instrumental when making the animations we use in our trailers like the PS4 announce trailer we posted recently. The team loves when we get the opportunity to use out-of-game content to build on the personalities of the Astroneer suits, while also giving players cool moments where they can see their favorite suits interacting with one another.

Thanks for reading! I hope that was a cool look at some of the fun behind the scenes work that goes into Astroneer. We can’t wait to bring Astroneer to PlayStation fans while continuing to develop it for years to come. The game is now available for pre-order, both digitally and physically!

    See you in the stars.

  • Surprise! Roguelike Darling Risk of Rain 2 Drops on PS4 Today

Surprise! Roguelike Darling Risk of Rain 2 Drops on PS4 Today

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Those of us at Hopoo Games and Gearbox Publishing are stoked out of our minds to . If you’re hearing about Risk of Rain 2 for the first time, let’s play a little catch up! Way back in the halcyon days of 2013, Risk of Rain dropped, quickly becoming one of the early titles leading a roguelike resurgence.

Now, Risk of Rain 2 marks the return of 2013’s classic roguelike, but adds a whole new dimension. While the first game was a 2D action game, Risk of Rain 2 is a fully 3D title. That means some things are pretty different, but one of our goals was actually to keep the core moment-to-moment gameplay feeling similar and authentic to the original title. Here’s what it’s like!

As one of a cast of sci-fi survivors, drop onto a beautiful but foreboding planet and blast your way to an escape. Enemies, loot, and mysteries abound in this multiplayer roguelike that’s absolutely stuffed to the seams with places to see, items to unlock, and baddies to blow up. Grab some friends in four player online co-op, stack up some items, and try to survive the wildlife.

When you land in Risk of Rain 2, the enemies will likely kick your butt, but in a fair way. Pay close attention and you’ll see patterns everywhere. You learn. You grow. You get better. Eventually taking down enormous bosses to push ever deeper into the planet’s mysteries.

In each randomized run, it’s essential to explore wide open stages, hunting enemies that turn into sweet, sweet EXP and gold. Once you’ve caused a mini-extinction event, use that gold to pop open some chests and gear up.

More than 70 items await your discovery, each one appearing on your survivor as you pick it up. Each item stacks and combines with the rest, scaling you from a regular shooter to an absolute god of destruction. For example, who doesn’t want a teddy bear who will literally take a shot for them? How about a ukulele that shoots lightning? A goat hoof? Yeah, it gets a little weird.

Seven different survivors are included on day one, each with a different suite of abilities and playstyles. The Commando’s a great place to start, which is why he’s the only character you have at the beginning of the game. He shoots, he rolls, he rocks. As you play you’ll unlock more survivors like the Huntress, a futuristic archer, the turret-happy Engineer, and REX, a puppy-like symbiote of a robot and plant.

Enjoy months of free additional content, already on its way to PS4. This includes new survivors, stages, bosses, items and more. Risk of Rain 2 is available NOW. Also, be sure to download the PS4-exclusive dynamic theme for free.

  • Risk of Rain 2 Storms to Xbox One Today

Risk of Rain 2 Storms to Xbox One Today

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

The classic multiplayer roguelike, Risk of Rain, returns with an extra dimension and more challenging action. Play solo, or team up with up to three friends to fight your way through hordes of monsters, unlock new loot, and find a way to escape the planet.

Risk of Rain 2 has been in development by Hopoo Games for almost three years. When we first launched in early access in March on PC, the first question everyone was asking is “when would it come to consoles?” With help from Gearbox Publishing and PlayEveryWare, today we are finally able to answer that question!

Risk of Rain 2Risk of Rain 2

For our players new to the franchise, both Risk of Rain 1 and 2 have the same core design philosophy:

    1. Easy to pick up and play, but hard to master
    2. Every playthrough is different
    3. Be enjoyable, regardless of whether you win or lose
    4. Time = difficulty. The longer you play, the harder it gets!

The length of a run in the game can last anywhere from 15 minutes to over a few hours, depending on the skill level of the player. We’re excited to see how long you can last on the planet – show us what you got!

Risk of Rain 2Risk of Rain 2

We are very proud of the fact that Risk of Rain 2 has seamless multiplayer to join up with your friends or match with other players around the world. Being able to experience the frantic balancing act of getting stronger vs. not letting the difficulty scale too high is always more fun with friends.

As you progress further into the game, you will unlock new playable characters, items, equipment, and more to help you survive the planet. Some of the most rare and difficult items to obtain will drastically change the way you play the game. Each of these power-ups stack infinitely so the longer you play the stronger you become.

Risk of Rain 2Risk of Rain 2

As of release, Risk of Rain 2 on Xbox One will match the PC early access version, including the Scorched Acres update and all previous patches before it. Future content updates will also update as soon as possible after they launch on PC – and yes, they will all be free, for months to come. We will be updating the game with tons of fresh content to keep things exciting for returning players.

Risk of Rain 2Risk of Rain 2

Something we’ve been trying very heavily to focus on with Risk of Rain 2 is community engagement and transparency. We want people to know what we’re doing, why, and when it will be done.

We’ve been updating our roadmap frequently to show progress and new information as we progress through early access. • Blair Witch: How You Play Matters

Blair Witch: How You Play Matters

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Blair Witch is a first-person, story-driven psychological horror game and it launches today with Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass for PC. While based on the iconic, cinematic lore of ”Blair Witch,” it tells a completely original story exploring human descent into darkness.

You play as Ellis, an ex-cop with a troubled past, who joins the search for a missing kid in the Black Hills Forest, the same forest we know from the movies. Things soon go awry and you find yourself caught in a horrible nightmare brought upon you by a mysterious force that haunts these woods – the legendary Blair Witch. This is the premise, but how this story will end depends largely on you – and on how you play.

    Blair WitchBlair Witch

Blair Witch features a number of alternative endings. However, you won’t find any decision wheels or dialogue options in the game. This is by design, since we found such solutions too intrusive and immersion-breaking for an experience we wanted to provide. We chose a different approach.

Instead of A/B choices, Blair Witch tracks how you play and the sum of your actions and reactions influence the story. Thanks to it, you act instinctively without thinking about making decisions and shape the story in a natural way.

    Blair WitchBlair Witch

Still, you might want to know what parts of your gameplay are tracked – especially if you already finished the game and want to replay it to see other outcomes.

Below you’ll find a few tips that will help you reach different endings:

    • First of all, the game stars Bullet, your loyal four-legged friend that helps in your search in the woods. How you treat your dog is definitely tracked by the game. You can pet Bullet or reprimand him. You can give him snacks, you can keep him close or let him wander freely. Bullet is afraid of totems, so making him walk close to them is also a choice…
    • Speaking of totems, you will encounter quite a number of them during your playthrough. Your gut instinct might be to destroy them, but know that you don’t have to.
    • Your instinct may also be to answer all incoming calls, either to your cell phone or walkie-talkie, but remember than you can always ignore or decline them. You can also try contacting people on your own.
    • Blair Witch is also the first Bloober Team’s game to feature combat. You can use your flashlight to fend off the monstrous forest creatures by directing the beam at them. However, that’s not the only option. Instead, turn off the flashlight, use the camcorder night vision to see in the dark, and try sneaking past the enemies.

    Blair WitchBlair Witch

These are just a few examples of tracked actions in the game, which also include your reactions to certain story-related events – but describing them now would mean entering the spoiler territory. Instead, I hope you will enter the haunted woods again and again to see in how many ways you can shape the story of Ellis and Bullet.

Blair Witch is available now with Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass for PC. It’s also available to purchase on the Microsoft Store. Click here for purchase details.

  • New In Viveport Infinity: Fujii, Loco Dojo and More!

New In Viveport Infinity: Fujii, Loco Dojo and More!

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

It’s time again to introduce INFINITY’s Top Games for the month! During August, we added a new batch of games that offer alien landscapes, ridiculous challenges, lighthouses within lighthouses, and more!

    Fujii

Explore the ethereal gardens of Fujii as you bring life back to otherworldly landscapes. Using water, music, and touch, you’ll coax plant life back into three different alien biomes. Your horticultural efforts will expand rings of light that hover over revitalized, musical gardens that sing with energy and life. You can also use seeds you’ve gathered along the way to cultivate your private garden however you please!

Sink into the zen of intergalactic gardening, no green thumb required!

Here’s what YouTubers Cas and Chary VR had to say about Fujii:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqA-MBMRyAc?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque&w=730&h=411]

    A Fisherman’s Tale

The Big Storm is on its way, and nothing will survive in its wake. Taking refuge in a lighthouse seems like it would be a straightforward task, but not in A Fisherman’s Tale. Objects can be combined and transformed, and the rules of physics don’t always apply.

You’ll gather some bizarre companions as you wrap your brain around reality-distorting puzzles. The world outside your cabin will be unpredictable, uncanny, and completely unexpected!

Check out why YouTuber CaptainSauce can’t think of anything in VR quite like A Fisherman’s Tale!

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2lSw8ngOok?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque&w=730&h=411]

    Loco Dojo

Grand Sensei requires amusement, and you and your friends are the perfect mini-game gladiators to give it to him. Spin the dice wheel and make your way across the Table of Trials to compete in the absurd challenges of Loco Dojo!

Discover your silliest skillsets as you and your rivals milk pigs, throw biscuits, and so much more across sixteen goofy mini-games. Can you master the madness and obtain the coveted Black Headband of victory?

Check out YouTuber Ctop taking on Grand Sensei’s challenges with the help of some friends!

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcbg-XTBrhM?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque&w=730&h=411]

    Ninja Legends

Hone your blocking and parrying skills and become a Ninja Legend! Dropped right into the action, you’ll have to slash, slice and attack at a break-necking pace to make your way through an onslaught of enemy ninjas.

Armed with katanas, claws, staff, and bow & arrow, you’ll have to attack and block your opponents in 360 degrees of action to come out on top. Ninja Legends will challenge your mind and body as your heart starts racing.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9bW3yULJCg]

    Afterlife

In the Afterlife by Signal Space Lab, you’ll follow a family as they struggle with the death of their 5-year old son. In this cinematic VR drama, you’ll view the family’s journey through the ghostly eyes of the child.

A branching live-action narrative, the way the story unfolds all depends on your own decisions. With three episodes and over 29 unique choices, this interactive piece allows you to discover a multilayered experience about grief and how we can move forward.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL_mtZHKwMc?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque&w=730&h=411]

    Disturbed on VIVEPORT Video

The multiplatinum-selling rock band, Disturbed, makes its way to VR as new 360 concert footage arrives on Viveport Video. You’ll get a front-row seat as the heavy metal legends travel the world with all new music for their Evolution tour. Rock out to the immersive 360 video of “Inside The Fire” live in London, live footage of “Never Again” in Tel Aviv and more.

  • Richtig Gänsehaut kriegen mit PSVR

    Richtig Gänsehaut kriegen mit PSVR

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

    Konstantinos Fotopoulos, freier Redakteur:

    Intruders: Hide and Seek

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H3B9JSy01M?rel=0&w=560&h=315]

Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYsxBKEQtH4?rel=0&w=560&h=315]

Hier werden berühmte Szenen aus Five Nights at Freddy’s, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Five Nights at Freddy’s 3, Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 und Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location im neuen Gewand präsentiert.

Ein Stuhl in einem Raum: Greenwater

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JEdVrdP0Ww?rel=0&w=560&h=315]

    AFFECTED: The Manor

    Bartender VR

    Reading Time: 8 minutes

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEKIAHrugZ4?feature=oembed&w=1020&h=574]

Gaming verbindet eben.

    Wir haben mit Dennis gesprochen:

Was waren Deine ersten Berührungen mit Gaming?

    Was bedeuten Dir Videospiele?

Was wolltest Du der Gaming Community schon immer mal sagen?

So gewinnen alle!
