How Composer Inon Zur Created the Soul of Starfield in Just Six Musical Notes

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

“I think that the more classical tone is the more dominant one in our [score]. However, if you listen to the whole score, there are many areas where electronic and sound design elements are 50, sometimes 60, or even 70% of the score. The score is vast and there are many cues that are actually not what we call classical at all. I think the interesting thing is the combination that we created.

“At many points, you cannot really put your finger on what is sound design, what is electronic, and what is orchestral, because everything really is intertwined. Sometimes there is a more traditional accompaniment, or orchestral background, but then the instrument that carries the melodies is actually synth. And sometimes it’s the other way around; there’s more ‘sound design-ish’ elements, but the [main] instrument is classical.”

The result is a score that can slide from mood to mood, style to style, seamlessly – helped by the fact that it’s enormous, surpassing the five-hour mark. Of course, five hours of music is still a fair bit less than the hundreds of hours some players will put into a game like Starfield, meaning Zur’s other challenge was in crafting a score that can keep hitting its key themes without feeling overly repetitive.

“It’s about finding this balance between, ‘How can I create something new, but make it feel like part of the same family?’ There are many ways to go about it: you could change the timbre, you could change the tempo, you could create variations that are different enough, but still remind the player, ‘Oh, yeah, this reminds me of the theme’, but it’s not the theme, it’s something different.

“It’s like painting. If you add a little bit more grey or black, automatically, the painting feels more gloomy. And there’s a way to do it in music. It’s almost like drawing the picture and fine-tuning the colours and themes. In this way, you create environments that are different enough, on one hand, but then still part of the same DNA.”

  • Celebrate 10 Years of Killer Instinct With The New Anniversary Edition

Celebrate 10 Years of Killer Instinct With The New Anniversary Edition

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Ten years ago, on November 22, 2013, the team at Xbox Game Studios Publishing released an all-new Killer Instinct for Xbox One and Windows PC. Since then, Killer Instinct has boasted a passionate, global community that has regularly featured at tournaments.

Earlier this year, at Evo 2023, we announced a special update to mark Killer Instinct’s 10th anniversary. Well, with the hard work of our partners at Iron Galaxy Studios, that update is finally here – and we’re officially calling it Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition. The Anniversary Edition includes some changes that we’re hoping will welcome players old and new!

Firstly, a new color scheme for our logo, theme, and remastered in-game user interface. (It’s a nod to Killer Instinct Gold, which released on the Nintendo 64 in 1996!)

Secondly, as we announced on Iron Galaxy’s developer stream last week, we’ve made significant balance updates to 19 of the 29 fighters. These updates, which range from minor bug fixes to major tuning adjustments, all came from extensive feedback from our community and pro tournament players. This rebalancing will create an entirely new meta for fighting gamers to explore – and we couldn’t be more excited to see what the players will do with it!

Another important update is to matchmaking, which has now been fully updated to PlayFab services after initial migrations this past May.

We’ve also made some changes to game rendering, including updating from Dx11 to Dx12 on Xbox consoles to help optimize graphics for Series X|S consoles. Xbox Series X consoles now display Killer Instinct in resolutions up to 4K at 60FPS, while Series S consoles reach up to 1440p at 60FPS. The combined updated theme and optimized graphics elevate the Killer Instinct experience players know and love for modern consoles and PCs.

This update also streamlines the many previous editions into two versions of Killer Instinct:

    • The free to play version of Killer Instinct – now available on Steam for the first time! – includes all the previously mentioned updates. This version features one free weekly rotating Fighter and Single-Player, Local, and Ranked Modes, to ensure new players can experience all that Killer Instinct has to offer.
    • The Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition will replace all paid versions of Killer Instinct, such as the Definitive Edition… and the good news is that anyone who has bought Premium content for the previous versions of Killer Instinct (Editions, Fighters, etc.) will get upgraded to the Anniversary Edition for free! Steam users will also receive, for the first time ever, the Permanent VIP Double XP Booster, and specialty colors for Gargos, Killer Instinct’s main boss.

For more information on what to expect from Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition, you can visit our News section on the Killer Instinct website.

We’re looking forward to hearing feedback from the Killer Instinct community! We would love it if you tag your social media posts with #PlayKI, so we can track all your feedback. On behalf of everyone who’s ever worked on Killer Instinct, thank you for ten amazing years!

  • Worldless: Making a Game That Won’t Allow You To Die

Worldless: Making a Game That Won’t Allow You To Die

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Worldless is a game driven by its unique approach to combat and exploration – and part of that unique nature is that it makes it impossible to die at any point – but without losing a sense of challenge throughout. Let me explain how we achieved that.

The combat of Worldless is a complex merge of the classic turn-based format with a high emphasis on action systems, pattern recognition and attack variety. A system with this much diversity and complexity requires constant engagement between the player and the game mechanics, and it can be hard to get to grips with it all – but once that penny drops, and all the systems click together it can lead to some extremely satisfying results. To encourage the player to continue trying, gel with the systems, and to not give up due to consistent “deaths” or “game overs” we opted to provide the player with what we feel is a better, less expected solution.

    Worldless Screenshot

Things start simple, allowing the player to get familiar with the basics – but later, the game demands these basics are properly executed in unison to take down the more advanced enemies. We wanted to properly reward players, and we have done this by allowing every enemy to be “absorbed”. Achieving an absorption provides players with skill points to further develop their abilities in Worldless, but we didn’t want things to be frustrating when it comes to unlocking new abilities. Therefore, even if you defeat an enemy without absorbing them by mistake, they can be instantly refought to absorb their powers in a fresh encounter. Nothing is missable in the game.

At the same time, most of the encounters offer some level of complexity on how to correctly execute them to gain a new skill, and optional and later bosses can be very challenging. Taking that into account, we wanted to avoid frustration, and so if you lose an encounter, you are simply pushed back and can re-enter the fight seamlessly. This system allowed us to go all-out designing optional content with high levels of complexity, knowing that the player will keep learning the more they try, and eventually evolve in a way where a seemingly hard enemy encounter becomes a walk in the park.

    Worldless Screenshot

We took the same approach with the exploration of Worldless. Rather than fall into a hazard and be faced with a game over screen, we simply reset the player to their last “safe” position. At first, the platforming is as simple as a horizontal jump but slowly, as the game ramps up, we added in various hazards, dash resets, and swinging points. We felt it’d be really infuriating for the player to “fail” on a platforming segment and be greeted with a loading screen or a “game over” so, much like our combat system, we reset the player and allow them to try again almost instantly. The whole idea of having no “game over” truly allowed us to be flexible in our choices and I think that’s evident in how crazy we can get with the combat encounters.

With Worldless being built upon pattern recognition, a good variety in enemy design was necessary to keep each encounter feeling fresh and challenging and with that came needs for various combat actions and mechanics. All the actions in Worldless have a purpose or a use-case and are heavily balanced to make their correct use very significant.

    Worldless Screenshot

Some actions deal more damage and can open enemies to a vulnerable state, and others deal high amounts of absorption damage to obtain new skill points. The latter are most useful once the enemy is put in this vulnerable state. This is accomplished by breaking a series of “blocks” represented with icons of specific types of damage. The main combat loop is to identify these “blocks”, break them by using the proper high damage actions, and then go all out using the attacks with highest absorption damage.

But then again, this is turn-based, so when your offensive window ends, it is the enemies’ chance to obstruct your progress in the fight. Taking damage will deplete the absorption bar, and enemies can attack in multiple ways, making the moment very intense and highly rewarding good reactions and pattern recognition.

    Worldless Screenshot

To make the defensive turn as exciting as possible, there are ways to even gain buffs for your next offense – by timing your inputs perfectly, you can perform “perfect guards” that can interrupt enemy actions with counterattacks and much more. This makes the defensive turn an active one,, not just a case of trying not to get defeated.

Worldless’ combat system is a unique one. It takes some adaptation, but the game will not penalise you for failure and in fact does the contrary – it treats failure as a growing process. By allowing you to instantly retry, you’ll see the benefits of getting familiar not only with the basic mechanics, but the endless possible combinations of later game skills. The skill ceiling is very high, and when reached, it feels amazing.

Worldlessis out now, playable on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Multiplayer – The Community’s Response So Far and Updates Since Beta

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Multiplayer – The Community’s Response So Far and Updates Since Beta

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Multiplayer has been out in the world for a couple weeks, and we are thrilled to see that it has come with a great sentiment from the Call of Duty community, who have responded particularly well to the more fluid movement system and the modernized return of the 16 fan-favorite maps from Modern Warfare 2 (2009).

Back on October 5, at the Call of Duty: Next broadcast, Sledgehammer Games developers took the stage to share all the innovations and details about what players could expect from Multiplayer at launch.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer Screenshot

Shortly after, the Beta kicked off and allowed players to get hands on experience with MP, which provided the opportunity for them to give feedback on the mode before its official launch on November 10. Fast forward to now, and Xbox players around the globe have been jumping into Modern Warfare III to experience this fan-favorite mode for themselves.

First and foremost, the great reaction to Modern Warfare III MP has been something Sledgehammer Games has been proud to see. As Zach Hodson, Design Director at the Studio puts it, “We’re incredibly inspired from the reactions so far. The positivity makes the effort worth it, and we use the negatives as motivation to get solid fixes and improvements out as fast as we can. Keep the feedback coming!”

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer Screenshot

On the feedback front, between Beta and launch, the studio has taken several key learnings to make some of the adjustments and improvements that you’ve already seen at launch. So far, spawns have been one of the most notable adjustments. From Zach Hodson: “Spawns were a big one. We heard from players that the spawns lacked directionality and it was making it impossible to know which direction the fights would be coming from. In between Beta and Launch our QA, Analysts, Designers, and Engineers worked together on all aspects of spawns to improve on the issues players were seeing. We think the work really paid off, but there are still more improvements coming.”

From an art direction standpoint, the Beta confirmed a lot of the hopes from the Sledgehammer team with the direction they had taken in modernizing these classic maps. From Matt Abbott, Art Director at the studio: “The Beta gave us so much data to trust our instincts and deliver to the players what we wanted to see as fans of Call of Duty.  We have to walk a fine line of balancing realism, grittiness, and natural palettes.  The perception of saturated colors can be polarizing because it potentially deprives a level of grittiness that has come to define Modern Warfare.  In the Beta, it became clear that we didn’t need to dial back our instincts and we could let the natural, physically based materials shine in their full glory while maintaining the realism the franchise is known for.”

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer Screenshot

There were a few adjustments made, though: “After the Beta, we made a subtle shift that pushed saturation and contrast to take full advantage of Xbox Series X, HDR, and modern monitors/TVs.  Because of the data from the Beta, we were able to make adjustments that made maps not only look better but play better as well.  The idea that people are stopping to smell the roses and look at all the care, tuning, and polishing that goes into the visuals of a Call of Duty game is something that warms a developer’s heart.”

Other fan favorite updates that have come with Modern Warfare III Multiplayer include slide and reload canceling, updates to recoil, and new ways to set your loadout. While loadouts can be entirely subjective, Hodson recommends “playing around with the collapsed-stockless MCW with Stalker Boots and seeing how aggressively you can build it, while still keeping its accuracy.” Beyond that, there are many opportunities to create the loadout that works best for your playstyle, so if you haven’t yet, be sure to jump in and try it out for yourself.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer Screenshot

Overall, Modern Warfare III Multiplayer has delivered an intense, fluid, and fun player experience. We look forward to seeing how the game continues to evolve based on community feedback. We can’t wait to see you in the lobbies!

  • Get Ready for a Fight with the For Honor Crossover in Dying Light 2 Stay Human

Get Ready for a Fight with the For Honor Crossover in Dying Light 2 Stay Human

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

The year might be coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean we can’t fit one more crossover into Dying Light 2 Stay Human before we see 2023 out. As we mentioned in our Sneak Peek, our last crossover event of the year will be with For Honor. So, Pilgrims, it’s time to sharpen your longswords, axes and katanas, because to fight off these noble warriors, you’re gonna need every advantage you can get!

Ubisoft’s medieval-inspired brawler pits some of the Middle Ages’ toughest factions against each other in up to 4v4 combat and seemed like a natural collaboration for us. First, we’re both about action, with a little sprinkling of dismemberment and decapitation. Secondly, and most importantly, we both have diehard communities who love to be creative when it comes to combat. So, get ready to practice your warcry for when you head into battle. And if Japanese, Icelandic or Latin isn’t one of your spoken tongues, don’t worry, we’ll forgive the pronunciation. It’s time to scream “Jinjyo ni shoubu” (or “Let’s have an honorable showdown”) as we head into talking about the event!

Those familiar with the lore of For Honor will know that these factions are entangled in a bitter war while fighting for supremacy of the map. With three of the game’s factions hearing that the city of Villedor would provide them a tactical advantage over their foes, they believed that the last bastion of humanity would see them be ultimately victorious. These warriors have seen thousands of battlefields, but nothing could prepare them for what lay ahead: hordes of zombies and one hard-to-kill hero, you!

As these warriors invade The City, you’ll see a cloud of fog appear from which they will emerge. These warriors can be friendly and will attack zombies or rival factions, but that’s the minority; most of them will see you as just another body to add to their tally. Not only will you need to put up a fight to survive, you’ll be rewarded for killing the Wardens, Kensei and Berserkers that find themselves in Villedor. Each of these factions will have different levels of attacking threat, HP and damage, so each will pose a different challenge. And make sure to watch out for their taunts as they will recover vital HP that might put you on the backfoot!

For defeating 15 For Honor warriors in duels, you’ll earn the legendary Berserker’s Hand Axe (and blueprint), which heals you when you decapitate an enemy and inflicts a bleeding effect on those who are caught by the blade. Additionally, the ultimate reward will require you to personally kill a total of 30 For Honor warriors; for doing so, you’ll get the Berserker outfit and paraglider. And finally, for banding together as a community of warriors and killing 5,000,000 of these foes, everyone will get the Warlord’s Shield Charm, which will allow you perform actions without consuming stamina immediately after decapitating an enemy.

For those who complete all the goals, they will earn everything that’s available in the Berserker Bundle for absolutely free. However, if you wish to represent another faction, we have prepared two special bundles: the Kensei Bundle and the Warden Bundle. Both feature a unique appearance, deadly weapon (with blueprint), charm and paraglider, so make sure to check them out in the in-game store, accessible via the main menu!

So, Pilgrims, it’s time to train your parrying skills, swordsmanship and creative combat ideas as you’ll be getting up close and personal with these fierce warriors. And one last bit of advice: “Nulla misericordia!”

And who says you need weapons? Utilize the entirety of your parkour moveset to get the jump on your enemies. Learn the ways of combat and parkour to feel the crunch of skulls and slices of flesh as you swing weapons or use your moves to fend off any forms of danger. And let’s not forget that Villedor has weapons that put the most advanced post-apocalyptic armories to shame. FOUR PILGRIMS ARE BETTER THAN ONE
Surviving in Villedor is easier with friends. Team up with up to 3 other players and increase your chances out there. Unravel the story together, take on Pilgrim Outpost challenges, or simply wreak havoc on the city streets.

  • Arma Reforger introduces immersive military simulator cross play to Xbox

Arma Reforger introduces immersive military simulator cross play to Xbox

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

I’ve been a fan of first-person shooters on console for longer than I’d like to admit (GoldenEye, anyone?), and I’ve been privileged enough to experience the exponential expansion of the selection of quality FPS titles on Xbox. But as someone who has always craved a more realistic and immersive military simulator experience, the Arma series has traditionally been my go-to. None of the previous Arma titles have made it to console, and it’s been a sore spot for many console gamers.

Eventually, fate led me to join Bohemia Interactive, right in the middle of the process of rebuilding Arma on a new engine. Arma Reforger is the first game built entirely on the new Enfusion Engine, and the first to introduce Arma’s multiplayer mil-sim experience to console. Now, Arma Reforger 1.0 has officially been released for Xbox Series X|S, opening the doors to console gamers for the first time in the history of the franchise. For Xbox players that are brand new to the Arma games, here’s what to expect.

Arma Reforger is a military simulator that transports you into Cold War era combat. It allows you to battle enemy factions using historically accurate weapons, ground vehicles, and helicopters. However, it’s distinctly different than other first-person shooters. It is a mil-sim sandbox with a huge emphasis on realism and immersiveness in both its gameplay mechanics and its environments. Combat can play out in any number of ways on the vast island maps, and victory isn’t just a matter of who can twitch and jump the fastest. Team communication and logistics organization are equally, if not more important, just as they are in real-world military operations.

Not to mention, almost every component of Arma Reforger can be modified, opening the doors for an endless variety of weapons, assets, maps, scenarios, and gameplay mechanics, all available for download in the in-game Workshop.

1.0 encompasses the essence of Arma Reforger. It gives you authentic infantry combat, with a selection of historically accurate weapons, but doesn’t constrain you to repetitive gameplay. The vast and immersive environments of Everon (51 km2) and Arland (10 km2) provide more than enough space for each match to play out differently. You have a selection of ground vehicles at your disposal, and now, in 1.0, you can take to the skies with meticulously recreated helicopters.

There are two main multiplayer game modes, each with their own purpose. In Conflict mode, you can choose to join one of two rival factions (US or Soviet) and battle it out to take control of the islands. A third, non-playable AI faction (the FIA), is also in the mix, adding a bit more unpredictability to the battlefield. You can even battle it out against PC players, on the same servers, in two different crossplay game modes.

While your team must hold several points to win, you can’t just run and gun to secure victory. Strategically transporting supplies to build up bases, repair and refuel vehicles, and restock your team is essential, bringing an added tactical dimension that really sets the game apart. There’s also a comprehensive medical system, meaning you can heal and revive your teammates, or even play as a medic if that’s your thing.

In the second game mode, Game Master, one selected player curates combat scenarios for other players, adding assets and AI, and generally guiding the flow of the match. You can also play Game Master offline in single-player, making it a great place to try and test new features and create your own scenarios to play with others later. I have logged countless hours setting up scenarios and trying to survive against dozens of AI as a training ground for multiplayer servers.

As the first military simulator sandbox available on console, Arma Reforger truly showcases the potential of the Enfusion Engine. After a few minutes of gameplay, you can instantly tell that this Arma title just feels more “real.” The flexible gameplay of previous installments has been preserved, but the new depth and detail enabled by Enfusion is unmistakable. Arma Reforger 1.0 is the first glimpse of the future of the Arma Platform on Enfusion, and as a fan of military simulators, I can say that the future looks bright.

  • SteamWorld Build Is the Series’ Most Impressively Wild Experiment Yet

SteamWorld Build Is the Series’ Most Impressively Wild Experiment Yet

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

SteamWorld isn’t like other series. Where most game franchises take a single core idea and iterate on it over multiple installments, the creators of SteamWorld decided early on that it could be anything. It’s been a tower defense title, a Metroidvania mining game, a 2D strategy shooter, and a card battling adventure – all set within the same universe of down-home steam-powered robots. For fans of SteamWorld, it’s always a delight to see what it could be next – and now, with SteamWorld Build, it’s a brand new take on the city building genre. It’s a typically unexpected leap.

But, clearly never content with staying the same for too long, Build brings another first for the series – it’s the first SteamWorld game not to be built by its creators, Thunderful Games (previously known as Image & Form). After being acquired by Thunderful, The Station have stepped in to create Build. Oh, and for good measure, they also made it the first SteamWorld game to use a 3D perspective, and the series’ first voice-acted game, too.

It’s a fascinating next step for the franchise – and I caught up with Game Director Andreas Persson, Art Director Sofie Wikström and head of the SteamWorld franchise Brjann Sigurgeirsson to discuss how they sent SteamWorld on what might be its biggest leap yet.

“We knew The Station well,” says Sigurgeirsson of how the collaboration came about. “We knew that they were very solid studio that had done a lot of work on the LittleBigPlanet franchise. We also knew that they had been working on their own things. And then when the opportunity materialised to acquire them, we sort of jumped on it. One of the one of the first things we said was, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if you guys could pitch us something that could fit in the SteamWorld universe?’”

“Since this was our first SteamWorld game, we looked at a lot of what [Thunderful] had done previously,” continues Persson. “And what we settled on was that they are really good at taking something familiar, and then mixing it with something else and creating something unique… With that, we then saw that there is a real nice city builder that could be made in this universe by taking the city part and marrying it with mining gameplay. I would say it’s like a city builder meets Dungeon Keeper.”

It’s a unique proposition, and one Sigurgeirsson says proves the point of using a new developer – SteamWorld is a series that never stays still, and it can grow in even less expected directions by employing whole new groups of developers, with fresh perspectives and different expertise.

The Station had worked on ideas for a city builder for some time, but SteamWorld offered them a unique opportunity – to work on two layers. Above ground, you put together a Wild West-inflected railway town, piecing together housing, factories, and amenities for a growing population of Steambots. But below the sand and dirt, the action changes entirely, asking you to dig your own mines to find the resources needed above ground, with dungeon crawling and tower defense elements thrown in. The way these two layers link is the unique selling point, forcing you to manage two types of game at once, and always giving you something meaningful to achieve.

It can sound daunting, but The Station has also taken another key part of SteamWorld into account – the fact that the whole series acts like a smörgåsbord of game genres, and aims to introduce its fans to new ones in accessible ways.

“We then saw that there is a real nice city builder that could be made in this universe by taking the city part and marrying it with mining gameplay. I would say it’s like a city builder meets Dungeon Keeper.”

    Andreas Persson, Game Director

“It’s something we’ve worked on from the very start of development,” says Persson, “since we knew we would get a lot of new players that were familiar with the world, but not necessarily with resource management games. So we had to think, ‘How do we communicate information and where do we put the complexity in the game?’ We deliberately decided early on to keep the city pretty streamlined. We didn’t want fires to erupt in the city and destroy everything.”

The idea is that there are demands on the player to build efficiently, but not major punishments if you don’t. Equally, while you’re mining, things will tick along above ground, reducing the need to constantly shift levels and micromanage. But, as Persson says, it’s not that there’s a lack of complexity:

“I remember we had some testers that didn’t realise how complex the game was until they learned everything,” Persson continues. “Because when you get to the first mine floor, there is not a ton of complexity. But as you go deeper, you learn each step, and each step builds on the previous one. So we said we want it to be ‘complex, but not complicated.’”

Another new consideration for both The Station and Thunderful was about transforming a genre best known on PC into a console-friendly experience. SteamWorld has always had a home on console, and it wouldn’t feel right to limit Build.

“We’d played a few [city builder] games [on console] and we really never felt that they worked,” says Wikström. “So we knew that going forward, we would have to adapt the UI and the gameplay with console in mind.” Unlike other games, this wasn’t a case of just working out button inputs – entire features were created with a controller at the forefront. “If we came up with anything, we always had to look at it from a controller perspective… I know that there were features that turned out in specific ways because of this. Rather than, you know, trying to shoehorn everything in on the console.”

The Station put limits on themselves to make sure playing with a controller always felt good – it’s been playable on console since the very first version of the game, and any time an update was prepared, it needed to be tested on console before it was approved.

Again, this feels like very ‘SteamWorld’ thinking – the series has always prized being unique and accessible, and The Station applied that thinking even to elements of game development that Thunderful had never had to think about before.

And, beyond the game itself, that’s the beauty of SteamWorld Build – it’s opening new doors for this already wide-open series. The Station isn’t just introducing SteamWorld fans to new ideas, and new ways of thinking about the series, but even Thunderful.

“I think The Station has proved that we can we can take SteamWorld in in any direction. There’s this internal joke that the next one should be a dating sim. And it’s a joke until we… make that game,” laughs Sigurgeirsson. “I think that The Station really proves that point. They’ve been brave, and very competent – they gathered enough understanding and then they just ran with it. And it’s turned out really, really great.”

SteamWorld Build comes to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One on December 1. It will be available for Xbox Game Pass on day one.

  • Compete for the Skull of Siren Song as Sea of Thieves Season Ten Continues

Compete for the Skull of Siren Song as Sea of Thieves Season Ten Continues

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

    Summary

    • The Skull of Siren Song Voyage sails in with the latest Sea of Thieves content update, available November 16 and free for all players with Xbox Game Pass and across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11, and Steam.
    • Race and battle against other crews to be the first to recover and deliver the mysterious and powerful Skull of Siren Song.
    • This update arrives as the second of three major new features that comprise the ongoing Sea of Thieves Season Ten.

The second major update in Sea of Thieves’ Season Ten has arrived! Building on the new content introduced with Guilds in October, this update unleashes a new type of World Event in the form of the Skull of Siren Song Voyage. These emergent, competitive Voyages pit crews against one another in a race to unearth and claim the titular artefact, all at the behest of the legendary Captain Briggsy.

    Crew Vs. Crew

The hunt for the Skull of Siren Song introduces a new competitive event to Sea of Thieves. When a Voyage begins, all players on a server will find a ghostly note pinned to their ship’s mast, offering them the chance to set off in search of this ancient and potent prize. If they accept, they’ll find themselves in possession of two maps directing them to the Skull of Siren Song Key and Chest – but the catch is that every other crew joining the Voyage will receive the same maps.

From there, players will have to battle it out to locate the Key and Chest on separate islands and bring them together to release the Skull of Siren Song within. Making things more challenging is the fact that once the Chest and Key are claimed, their locations will be broadcast to all other crews by means of map markers and eye-catching beacons on the horizon, leading potential rivals straight to the pirates who possess them. By fending off their foes long enough to unlock the Chest, players can finally get their hands on the fabled Skull of Siren Song.

Even then, the mission is not over as the prize must be delivered to Captain Briggsy. In this, the Skull is both a help and a hindrance: it contains tremendous power that can be used to bombard enemies with blasts of deadly soundwaves, but it also carries a heavy curse. On land, the Skull will summon Coral Skeletons to its defense, and at sea, it causes a ship’s progress to be considerably slowed, allowing rival crews to more easily close the distance.

The Voyage concludes with a race to Briggsy’s beacon to hand over the Skull, leaving a single crew to emerge victorious and claim the spoils!

    Race for Rewards

Fending off all other crews is no mean feat, and the rewards for delivering the Skull reflect that. The hefty pot of gold is just the start: you’ll also begin unlocking new Commendations that track how many times you dig up a Chest or Key, how many Chests you unlock and much more.

Compete in enough Voyages and you’ll earn exclusive rewards. With a Flag, Figurehead, Sails and Trinket on offer, you’ll be able to redecorate your ship to celebrate your victories, while Captain Briggsy’s Jacket and Mask present a more personal alternative to update your style. There’s even the coveted Composer of Siren Song Title awaiting pirates who truly prove their mettle in battle and complete all Siren Song Commendations.

    Fresh Fashions

Elsewhere in November’s content drop, a new update means new Pirate Emporium stock! This month, shoppers can get their hands on the Ravenwood ship set previously exclusive to the Season Eight Plunder Pass, plus the newly added Ravenwood Spyglass and weapons. As is traditional at this time of year, the Festival of Plenty musical instruments and pet outfits also make a return for a limited time. As always, the new additions are accompanied by a freebie that any pirate can drop by and pick up, this month in the form of the Angry Scribe Emote!

Over in the Outpost shops, the Gold Leaf set introduced last month expands to include some fine matching clothing, letting pirates flaunt their purse-liberating habits for all to see. And if there are outfits you wish you’d been able to keep while experiencing the three Tall Tales of The Legend of Monkey Island, this update introduces a little cosmetic incentive to play through them one more time…

    Not Done Yet

Guilds and the Skull of Siren Song Voyage aren’t the only things on offer in Season Ten. Still to come, the third major Seasonal update will introduce Safer Seas: a new game mode allowing players to sail the Sea of Thieves in private for the first time, alone or with a single crew of hand-picked friends.

With no enemy crews present, Safer Seas will offer a more peaceful, more predictable gameplay cycle to help new players get to grips with all the systems on offer. It will also enable existing players to interact with the more PvE-focused aspects of the game without disruption, such as completing Tall Tales or fishing. At the same time, the reduced risk of Safer Seas will correspond to reduced rewards and slower progression.

Keep an eye on Sea of Thieves’ social channels for more information regarding Safer Seas as we get closer to its release. For now, Captain Briggsy is calling!

  • Inside Critical Dewpoint, The Custom Halo Infinite Map Built To Celebrate Mtn Dew Game Fuel

Inside Critical Dewpoint, The Custom Halo Infinite Map Built To Celebrate Mtn Dew Game Fuel

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

The year is 2007. You’ve made it through another long day, you get home, throw your bag on the floor, and push the big circular ‘on’ button on your Xbox 360. It’s finally time. As this iconic year commanded, you’re ready to kick it with the crew, play some Halo, and enjoy an ice-cold Mtn Dew Game Fuel.

This team-up is regarded as one of the most legendary campaigns of all time. And just over 15 years later, Game Fuel is making the ultimate comeback. First introduced with Halo 3, the iconic beverage is back, in collaboration with Halo Infinite. We’ve got the lowdown on what to expect, from collectable merchandise, exclusive Halo Infinite in-game rewards, to new and nostalgic ways to play in-game, all to celebrate the relaunch of the original Halo 3 Game Fuel flavor, Citrus Cherry.

We’re also bringing you an inside look at Critical Dewpoint, a brand-new Mtn Dew-themed multiplayer map coming to Halo Infinite as part of the Halo 3 Refueled playlist, where fans will also be able to relive seven classic Halo 3 maps recreated in Forge mode. It’s the ultimate nostalgia trip for Halo players old and new, so let’s find out more.

The Critical Dewpoint map is designed and built by ArturBloodshot, a skilled Forger and Community Ambassador for Halo. He’s also part of the Forge Council, a group of specialist map creators tasked with bringing exciting new content to Halo Infinite. Artur has been forging maps for 16 years since the launch of Halo 3, knows exactly what it takes to craft a great multiplayer level, and fortunately for us, he’s come to tell us all about it.

Critical Dewpoint in all its Mtn Dew colored glory

Critical Dewpoint is being brought to Halo Infinite as part of the Halo 3 Refueled Playlist, which offers reimaginations of popular classic Halo 3 multiplayer maps the community adores. As a long-standing member of the Halo community, working with both 343 Industries and Mountain Dew to bring something to the wider community was a dream come true for Artur.

“When [Mtn Dew] shared their vision and what they’re planning to do, I couldn’t say no,” Artur says. And it’s not just the maps that have Artur excited, the more he learned about the plans both teams had to celebrate the re-release of Mt Dew game Fuel, the more excited he got.

Talking to us about the upcoming Halo x Mtn Dew merch collection, he adds: “The moment I saw that Halo 3 logo on the hoodie, I said I have to get it. The whole collaboration really hits a sweet spot for nostalgia as a celebration for that era.”

    Building Critical Dewpoint

Critical Dewpoint is a throwback to the classic multiplayer maps of Halo 3; it combines those gritty industrial visuals we know and love with creative nods to Mtn Dew and Game Fuel. This includes nods to Game Fuel flavors at the team bases and a vending machine that dishes out various power-ups to players.

Critical Dewpoint features vending machines where players can grab buffs

Artur tells us that Halo Infinite’s Forge mode means that Forgers have more choice than ever before, and that the foundation those tools provide can lead to any environment you can imagine.

“From classic multiplayer modes to new experiences, to the upcoming release of Firefight, or even horror mini-games, there’s so much you can do,” he says. “You can also customize your own sandbox or write a script, the freedom you have with this tool is amazing.”

When it comes to designing a multiplayer map, Artur explains that there are several key components to consider. One of these is movement, and giving players the space to get around without restriction, and of course, take advantage of skill jumps. For the uninitiated, skill jumps are an advanced traversal technique that lets players move around the map faster, using precise movements.

“Good players might not miss any of their shots, but they also need to know how they’re using their feet on the maps,” Artur says. His keen eye for movement is extremely visible in Critical Dewpoint; the map is full of ledges and levels to hop around on.

Artur’s favourite Forge canvas is Foundry, which was introduced with Halo 3. It’s a small workhouse filled with containers, not too dissimilar from Critical Dewpoint. While the maps offered in the Refueled Playlist offer much more visual fidelity than their vintage counterparts, it’s not the modern graphics that make them impressive.

The original Foundry map canvas from Halo 3, which Critical Dewpoint is built in

“In all modern video games, you can see a lot of the details on every environment, which really helps with immersion, and I enjoy that,” Artur says. “But the beauty of Halo maps is how the environment itself is designed so players can understand their position and path options.

“This is something I implemented with Critical Dewpoint – the environment has enough information for the player so that they can navigate the map easily while keeping the crosshairs in action.”

Critical Dewpoint promises lots of fun for new Halo veterans and Mtn Dew superfans, but there are also plenty of easter eggs dotted around the map for all those Halo veterans to find. Above all, Artur wanted the map to celebrate Halo’s journey, the unforgettable games that brought us countless hours of multiplayer fun, and what comes next for the iconic series.

“Everyone associates Halo 3 with Mtn Dew, right?” Artur says. “That nostalgia is really important to the community because it allows you to reflect on how you started, and how the game has evolved to bring you new experiences while keeping the essence of the thing you love.”

The Halo Infinite Mtn Dew Citrus Cherry Game Fuel limited edition flavor is out now in the US, so make sure to get your exclusive Halo Infinite in-game rewards and grab the limited-edition Halo x Mtn Dew merch in the Halo Gear shop before it’s all gone.

The Halo 3 Refueled Playlist launches November 14, and runs for two weeks until November 28, so be sure to get the old Halo band back together and give them a spin. After November 28, the maps will enter general rotation.

  • Why Debut DLC The Awakened King Makes Remnant II Even Better for All Players

Why Debut DLC The Awakened King Makes Remnant II Even Better for All Players

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

    Summary

    • A new Remnant II Storyline revolving around the return of the One True King, accessible in Adventure Mode or Campaign.
    • New Enemies, Mini-Bosses, World Boss and loads of new items, new archetype, armor and weapons.
    • New secrets and puzzles to uncover

A new chapter unfolds with the release of Remnant II’s highly anticipated first DLC: The Awakened King. This expansion takes players on a journey through the storyline centered around the return of the One True King, a ruler betrayed and left for dead by his closest allies. As the King rises from his dreamless slumber, he emerges with a thirst for vengeance, seeing traitors lurking in every shadow. The once-respected monarch’s demeanor has transformed, now ruthless and relentless, leaving a wake of Fae casualties in his path.

As players step into the Awakened King’s world, they’ll discover a completely new location on Losomn. A tempestuous storm rages on, coinciding with the King’s Castle’s mysterious appearance in a remote corner of the realm. The deluge has caused water levels to surge, and whispers of mythical creatures, once thought mere legends, now haunt the turbulent waters and nearby docks.

    Confronting New Adversaries

The surging tides bring forth mysterious creatures, once relegated to the realm of folklore. These horrors prowl the docks and nearby streets, eager to claim unsuspecting victims. As players navigate the treacherous terrain, they’ll encounter new characters, their intentions veiled in uncertainty. Along the way, players will grapple with morally weighty decisions, culminating in a showdown with the resurgent One True King.

    Revisiting Familiar Faces

The narrative unfurls with the revelation of the treacherous plot that led to the King’s forced slumber. The Goddess Nimue, once a confidant of the King, played a pivotal role in this betrayal. Alongside a power-hungry council member and the malevolent figures Faelin and Faerin, they orchestrated the scheme. Nimue, wracked with remorse, ultimately finds a way to rouse the King, hoping to right the wrongs she unwittingly unleashed upon the realms. Now, the King’s awakening has driven him to perceive all Fae as potential turncoats, indiscriminately seeking retribution against those he deems guilty.

    New Arsenal and Items

The Awakened King DLC introduces a trove of new items for players to track down. They’ll need to solve complex puzzles and face challenges to secure the most elusive items. New weaponry awaits, enabling players to forge synergies with their existing loadouts and archetypes. Those daring enough can also explore the entirely new Archetype, the Ritualist, reshaping the way they approach their character build and combat.

The Awakened King DLC for Remnant II can be accessed in Adventure Mode or through the campaign. This means it will slot seamlessly into the flow of Remnant II’s gameplay loop players love. With a unique narrative, an all-new landscape, and a host of formidable adversaries and items, players are in for an unforgettable journey through the world of Losomn. Prepare for a tale of betrayal, redemption, and the resurgence of a vengeful monarch. The Awakened King will be available on November 14, 2023!

  • Create Your Own Guild and Much More in Sea of Thieves Season Ten

Create Your Own Guild and Much More in Sea of Thieves Season Ten

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

    Summary

    • Season Ten is the latest Sea of Thieves content update, available October 19 and free for all players with Xbox Game Pass and across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11 and Steam.
    • Players will be able to create and join Guilds – allowing them to forge more meaningful bonds with friends, enjoy asynchronous progression and work together for exclusive rewards.
    • Guilds is just the first feature launching in Season Ten, with Skull of Siren Song Voyages and Safer Seas coming to Sea of Thieves in subsequent months.

Sea of Thieves very latest Season begins today! Season Ten promises to be one of the biggest yet, launching with a significant and socially focused new feature for our shared-world pirate sandbox. Expanding on Season Seven’s Captaincy update, Guilds gives players opportunities to strengthen the bonds they’ve already forged on the seas, while also building new and long-lasting connections.

    A New Way to Connect

Sea of Thieves Season 10 Image

Across different crews, time zones and even platforms, Guilds can unite a group of pirates under a shared identity and cause, and help them celebrate their accomplishments with shared rewards. The in-game Guild Chronicles even allow players to see what other Guild Members have been up to while they were away, furthering the sense of communal goals and adventures. Each Guild also allows for full freedom of expression, with the Guild Owner having full control over its name, motto and branding.

With a limit of 24 pirates per Guild, these groups still maintain a sense of intimacy and shared identity – and with pirates only able to join a maximum of three Guilds at any time, the focus is very much on playing with crewmates you know or will come to know well. We know that Sea of Thieves is a game best played with friends, and whether this be old colleagues or new comrades you make out there on the waves, Guilds will offer players a longevity of connection far beyond a single Sea of Thieves session.

    Shared Progress and Rewards

Sea of Thieves Season 10 Image

A Guild isn’t just for easier sailing with an expanded set of shipmates – it’s also a new way to earn rewards! When you’re sailing on a ship pledged to a Guild, you’ll contribute to its shared Guild Reputation. You can unlock rewards including special clothing themed to different ship’s roles, and with every 100 levels of Guild Reputation collectively reached, you’ll earn a level of Distinction that will upgrade your Guild Plaque and Guild Reputation cards. Keep raising that Guild Reputation and you’ll open up new Commendations to complete, carrying prizes that include the unique Unbroken Bonds ship set.

Pirates looking to maximize their Reputation gain – and get a little competitive edge at the same time – can even set sail as a Guild Emissary! Once your Guild has a few levels of Reputation safely secured, any Guild Member looking for a challenge can raise a Guild Emissary Flag at the Sovereigns’ tent and go seeking that nail-biting risk/reward Emissary experience. There’ll be a new Guilds Ledger too, so you can compare your skills with other Guilds and the most prolific will score even more enviable rewards!

    Level Up Guild Members’ Ships

Sea of Thieves Season 10 Image

You can’t sail for a Guild without any ships available, so that’s where pledging comes in: any Captain with an owned ship can pledge it to the Guild, and choose whether fellow Guild Members can take it out even when its owner isn’t around. The ship in question will keep all its usual customisation and decorations, so your friends will be able to fully appreciate your daring interior design choices.

Even better, pledged ships will continue to progress their Ship Milestones when their Captain isn’t present. If you’ve got a vessel that you’ve been waiting to level up, now’s your chance to let some friends help you on your way.

We’re thrilled to be adding such a deep and connective feature as Guilds to Sea of Thieves, and we hope that players will love being able to explore and extend their bonds with other pirates. Social play is at the heart of Sea of Thieves, with its best moments being those you share with others. Guilds will give players the tools to turn these memorable moments into long-lasting magic.

    New Cosmetics Storm into View

Sea of Thieves Season 10 Plunder Pass Image

With a new Season underway, there are as always 100 fresh levels of Renown to rack up and rewards to be unlocked! Alongside the allocations of gold, Doubloons, Ancient Coins and Seasonal cosmetics available for everyone to unlock, pirates who pick up the Season Ten Plunder Pass can work towards the electrifying Stormfish Chaser ship set and clothing to help them feel right at home in the heart of a hurricane.

The Pirate Emporium will also continue to enjoy monthly updates throughout Season Ten, starting with October’s shining Silver Sepulchre set. In a world as dangerous as the Sea of Thieves, you never know what kind of horrors you might find yourself facing. With this set designed for fearless slayers of the undead, you’ll have all the tools you need to make a stand against the darkness.

    Plenty Still to Come

While Guilds are sitting firmly in the spotlight for Season Ten’s launch, they’re not the only thing to get excited about. There’s a range of meaningful quality-of-life improvements too, including work done on hit detection and sword combat, Rowboats in a range of new colors and the ability to repair them, and a persistent player inventory when you rejoin a session. For the full list of updates, be sure to check out our latest release notes.

And the fun doesn’t stop with the October update, as Season Ten is all set to deliver new feature updates throughout the rest of the year. Once you’ve all gotten settled into your Guilds, you’ll need to be ready for the next big thing in November: the Skull of Siren Song Voyages, which involve a server-wide race to score a significant new treasure. Swiftly following in December will be the Safer Seas update that gives players a way to find their sea legs without disruption, so if you need an overview on either of these forthcoming features, catch up with our Season Ten Preview video and stay tuned in the weeks ahead for full details.

  • Slay Vampires in Diablo IV’s Season of Blood

Slay Vampires in Diablo IV’s Season of Blood

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

Greetings wanderers. Whether you have already mastered the nightmarish landscapes of Sanctuary, or you’re tempted to try a savage new experience– Diablo IV’s Season of Blood revitalizes the many paths that players walk. On October 17, tons of quality-of-life changes and a bloodthirsty scourge arrive in Diablo IV. Leveling a character to 100 is much quicker, more Endgame Bosses have been added, and many changes have been made across all of Diablo IV.

Skip the Campaign, Dive Into the Season

Starting with Season of Blood, players will now have the option to skip the Campaign after completing the Missing Pieces quest from the Prologue on the Seasonal Realm. Doing so will allow you to dive straight into Seasonal content, fast tracking your path to mastering the sanguine arts.

For those wanting to dive right into the Seasonal content with a pack of your best demon slaying allies, this change is for you!

    Bloodthirsty Foes Descend Upon Sanctuary

Diablo IV’s Season of Blood calls upon players to battle against new monstrous threats – Vampires, Blood Skeletons and Blood Seekers threaten the citizens of Sanctuary. Uncover a new Season Journey, Questline, 22 Vampiric Powers, Battle Pass and more. Fight against the forces of the dark master Lord Zir and defeat them to unlock the secret of their dark art.

    Diablo 4 Season 2 Image

    Fresh Blood, Fresh Start

In Diablo IV, at the start of a Season, players must create a new character in the Seasonal Realm. Considering it’s a fresh start for all players, the beginning of a new Season is the perfect time to come to Sanctuary’s defense alongside everyone else on the same journey. Fear not! Once Season of Blood has concluded, your Seasonal Character becomes part of the Eternal Realm. Here, you can continue to progress, level and slay demons at your leisure.

For those savvy enough to have previously aided Sanctuary denizens, any earned renown (gained from uncovering the Map and conquering mighty Strongholds) will provide an advantage when the time comes to begin anew. All earned Renown Rewards persist between any new character on the same Realm, providing an immediate edge to your latest wanderer. This includes increased Potion capacity, Murmuring Obols Capacity and additional Skill Points.

    Diablo 4 Season 2 Image

The Road to Hell is Paved with Slain Demons

Reaching Level 100 with a character takes cunning, grit and determination; it’s no small feat. With Season of Blood, the team has implemented many changes to make achieving Level 100 significantly faster across both Seasonal and Eternal Realms. We heard the community feedback to decrease the time spent to reach Level 100 and for more meaningful content to play while progressing past Level 50 and beyond.

With the update on Oct. 17, many changes have been made to core game mechanics to help wanderers on their journey to glory. The experience gained from killing monsters at Level 50 and above has been generously increased and rises steadily as you level. Experience bonuses (such as Elixirs and Seasonal Blessings) are now multiplicative with the World Tier bonus. Nightmare Dungeon layouts have also been improved to ensure players don’t miss out on key Objectives, which reduces the need to backtrack. Monster density has also increased in Dungeons, drastically raising the carnage of these brutish hollows.

These changes, alongside many others, make the overall journey to Level 100 about 40% faster.

Seasons are a great opportunity for the development team to introduce new content and make bold changes. Season of Blood is a chance for us to address many community concerns and make the experience of slaying demons more exciting for all. As for meaningful ways to level up in the Endgame, bosses of awesome power stand in your way.

    Diablo 4 Season 2 Image

    The Chase to the Endgame

On your path to greatness, new and familiar threats arrive to challenge even the most fearsome of warriors. Starting in World Tier III, Uber difficulty bosses become available, each with their own ability to drop exclusive Uniques, items that provide rare, powerful upgrades to your character. These bosses will require different materials and conditions to engage them – fighting the mighty Echo of Duriel will require playing in World Tier IV and resources gained from all other Uber boss fights.

We received community feedback that there should be more Endgame activities and better opportunities to farm Unique and Uber Unique items. This group of Endgame bosses were created to pose a challenge to high-level players while allowing them to hunt down sought-after items in a fun and intense way. These Endgame bosses each drop glorious cosmetics to earn – use them to style your character and Mount.

    Diablo 4 Season 2 Image
The Smoldering Brimstone Mount has a chance to be earned from defeating Echo of Duriel.

The Endgame experience for wanderers has also improved through vastly increased Gold and experience gained from Helltide Chests, Grim Favors and completing individual Whisper tasks. For the avid loot collectors, we’ve changed how items are collected in later World Tiers. Items of lower rarity in higher World Tiers simply drop as materials, freeing up much needed inventory space.

Legions of Lord Zir’s Minions Await

This is a brief glimpse of the Season Journey, quality-of-life changes and Endgame challenges that are coming with Season of Blood. Classes have been adjusted, Damage has been redistributed, Unique items have received a major overhaul and more!

For a full look at everything that arrives on Oct 17, you can read our Diablo IV patch notes. Fierce new challenges and Lord Zir’s vampiric scourge await in Season of Blood.

If you want to enhance your Diablo IV experience, we’ve created a custom console that turns an Xbox Series X into a Diablo-inspired statue of the Gates of Hell – you can be one of two people to earn this sinfully stylish prize by entering our sweepstakes – learn more here.

  • Xbox Continues to Champion the Gaming & Disability Community with New Accessibility Updates

Xbox Continues to Champion the Gaming & Disability Community with New Accessibility Updates

    Reading Time: 8 minutes

Gaming allows us to experience worlds beyond imagination, share our stories and forge friendships with people across the world. At Xbox we believe that gaming is for everyone, including the over 429 million players with disabilities, and it is our responsibility to create a place where everyone feels welcome, safe, and included to experience the joy and community of gaming.

Each October we take a moment to celebrate the disability community, and earlier this month  Xbox celebrated its partnership with Special Olympics in the form of Gaming for Inclusion, a hybrid, multi-day tournament that aims to showcase the power of inclusion through gaming, break down barriers and empower Special Olympics athletes through technology.

Prioritizing accessibility in gaming invites more people to experience gaming, by empowering all gamers to play in the way that is true to them. Today, we are excited to continue our support of the Gaming & Disability community by sharing a variety of updates. These include:

    • Recognizing Craig Hospital’s Adaptive Gaming Program, which showcases the power of play and importance of making gaming for everyone.
    • Sharing new accessibility features from Team Xbox.
    • Unveiling the Playbook for Accessible Gaming Events, an events guide that shares 12 best practices Xbox has learned partnering with the Gaming & Disability community over the years.
    • Highlighting the Accessibility in Games channel in the Xbox store, that now features hundreds of games and thousands of accessibility tags!
    • Announcing the next chapter of the Xbox Ambassador Accessibility Explorer Path, including new knowledge checks and badges, while recognizing the over 2 million quests completed since its launch in October 2022.
    • Spotlighting some of our favorite accessible games including Sea of Thieves, Age of Empires, and the recently launched Forza Motorsport.
    • And much more!

When everyone can play, we all win. Check out more details below!

    Craig Hospital’s Adaptive Gaming Program

Craig Hospital is a Colorado-based neurorehabilitation and research hospital specializing in the treatment of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. Xbox has been partnering with Craig Hospital since the development of the Xbox Adaptive Controller, which launched in 2018. Since then, Craig Hospital has been an invaluable partner in helping shape Team Xbox’s accessible hardware journey.

Today, we are excited to highlight the hospital’s Adaptive Gaming Program, which brings the joy and connection of gaming to patients and family members alike who love to play. Check out the video below which details how gaming has been a positive force for players who have taken part in Craig Hospital’s gaming program.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2IeEG5FTcg?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Watch the Audio Described version of the video here.

Many of the players at Craig Hospital use the Xbox Adaptive Controller to customize their gameplay. To learn more about the Xbox Adaptive Controller, including how to get started, visit the Xbox Adaptive Controller User Guide:

    Playbook for Accessible Gaming Events

A black sign with a white gaming accessibility logo stands in front of demo stations at a game convention. Text reads in English and German, "Here to help. Please ask a member of the Xbox Staff if you have any specific needs. We are here to make sure you have a great experience. For more information, visit xbox.com/accessibility. Xbox."

At Xbox, we aspire to a world where everyone can participate in gaming. Industry events are no exception, which inspired the creation of the Playbook for Accessible Gaming Events.  In this guide, Xbox shares best practices learned over years of working with the Gaming & Disability Community at events such as GDC, gamescom, E3, Xbox Fanfest, and more. Accompanying this guide is a newly published Disability Etiquette Training Video

Much like our Xbox Accessibility Guidelines, these best practices are designed for event production teams, and are meant to serve as a catalyst for generating ideas and provide a set of guidelines when planning. They can also be used when evaluating the accessibility of an event at its completion to build for the future.

Use Existing Controller to Start Controller Pairing

Wireless pairing just got more accessible, as direct contact with your console to press the pair button is no longer required. From the comfort of a couch, wheelchair, hospital bed, etc., players can now put their console into pairing mode using an Xbox media remote, digital assistant voice command, or previously paired controller to connect a new controller to their console.  Check out the support article on how to  Connect an Xbox Wireless Controller to your console for more details.

Elite 2 & Adaptive Controller to Keyboard Remapping

An “Xbox Accessories” menu on-console displays different configuration settings that allow players to remap buttons for the Xbox Adaptive Controller and Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller.

Players will soon be able to remap controller buttons to almost 90 keyboard keys on the Xbox Adaptive Controller and Elite Series 2, allowing players with limited mobility to use the Xbox Adaptive Controller with games that only support mouse/keyboard input.  For example, a player can remap the Left Bumper on their controller to the Keyboard C key, Ctrl + C, or Ctrl + Shift + C, etc.

Remapping will be available through the Xbox Accessories app available on both PC and console. This feature is currently available to Xbox Insiders and Xbox Accessibility Insiders League (XAIL) members, and will be available to all players in the coming months. Check out more details in the Keyboard Button Mapping for Xbox Controllers – Xbox Wire post and how to join Xbox Accessibility Insider League.

Game Accessibility Settings Menu for Xbox Widgets in Game Bar

A menu on PC depicts the Game Accessibility Settings Menu for Xbox Widgets in Game Bar.

Xbox gaming on PC is about to be even more accessible! Following the launch of the Xbox app’s ‘Accessibility’ settings menu last spring, the Xbox widgets in Game Bar will include their own ‘Game accessibility’ settings menu on October 19 to make it even easier for players to locate accessibility settings on the platform. In the updated Xbox widgets, you’ll find both visual and audio-related accessibility controls to customize your PC gaming experience according to your preferences and needs.

To see the new menu, starting on 10/19, update Game Bar and the Xbox App on PC to the latest versions; the ‘Game accessibility’ settings are available via any of the new Xbox widgets in Game Bar by clicking on their “settings” button.

New accessibility knowledge checks in the Xbox Ambassador Accessibility Explorer Path

Since launching the Xbox Ambassador Accessibility Explorer Path a year ago, over 2 million quests have been completed by Xbox Ambassadors as a way to learn more about accessibility and support a welcoming, inclusive community where everyone has fun.

In addition to continuing to share new quests, Xbox is excited to announce that in upcoming months the Explorer Path will feature knowledge checks that will celebrate ambassador’s knowledge of accessibility from completed quests.  At the completion of these checks, ambassadors will earn an Xbox Accessibility Ally Badge that can be linked to their profile.  If you haven’t already, check out the Xbox Ambassadors page to start your accessibility journey!

New ‘Accessibility in Games’ channel on Xbox Store

The ‘Accessibility in games’ channel is displayed on an Xbox console, with rows of small icons representing different games on Xbox that have Xbox Accessibility Feature Tags.

Players looking for their next great game just got even easier! Xbox Game Accessibility Feature Tags were launched in 2021 with over 20 tags that represent accessibility features players can use to find games to play. Previously only titles with 6 or more tags were highlighted in the Xbox store and Xbox.com, but with hundreds of games and thousands of tags now available, Xbox created an Accessibility in Games channel that includes all games with accessibility feature tags, making it even easier to find games with accessibility features that work best for players.

A menu depicts Xbox’s ‘filter and sort’ feature, which allows players to find different accessible games, based on ‘Gameplay’ and ‘Audio’ settings.

Check out the selection of games with accessibility features in the Microsoft Store on Xbox navigation bar or home page. From there, players can filter and sort games based on Gameplay, Audio, Visual and Input accessibility features.

Microsoft Gaming Accessibility Testing Service (MGATS) at PAX 2023

A member of Xbox’s Accessibility Team presents to a group of people gathered around a table, informing them about The Microsoft Gaming Accessibility Testing Service.

The Microsoft Gaming Accessibility Testing Service (MGATS) program is an offering for developers and publishers to validate the accessibility of their game, get feedback from Players with Disabilities and understand what accessibility tags apply to their games.

At PAX West on Sept 1, the MGATS team hosted a workshop providing an overview of gaming accessibility and testing tips. This was followed by breakout sessions with 8 workstations equipped with Xbox consoles and accessories, ready to test games like Minecraft to see how they support accessibility features such as “progress saving options”, “adjustable difficulty”, “full keyboard support” and more.  This community connection not only provided feedback to build the program further, but demystified how video games can be tested to ensure accessibility for all.

At Xbox, accessibility is a journey with no single end point. This includes creating gaming experiences for everyone to enjoy. Today, we are excited to spotlight some recent accessibility accomplishments across various games from Xbox.

    Forza Motorsport

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7aVUqmQ_Sc?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Last week, Turn 10 Studios released their most accessible Forza Motorsport ever, which includes several innovative accessibility features including one touch driving, screen narration, text-to-speech and speech-to-text, and more.  Blind Driving Assists, a feature set built for players who are Blind or have Low Vision, works by providing a set of supplemental audio cues designed to help Low/No Vision players navigate the tracks of Forza Motorsport. The full suite of accessibility features were built in close partnership with the Disability community over two years.

In August, to help blind/low vision players target other players and enemy AI when using guns and cannons. As they aim, a clicking noise goes off if players are close to a target. The closer they are, the faster it clicks. Specific features include:

    • The sound pans left and right to help players know which way to rotate horizontally
    • The sound pitches up and down to help players know which way to move vertically
    • It has a lock on noise when players are over a target.
    • Aim assist begins automatically when players aim down the sight of a projectile weapon or man a cannon.

    Age of Empires

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOqnYwO7_T8?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

In August, Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition, the latest instalment of the iconic strategy series arrived as a surprise announcement during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live and was made immediately available to play on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. With the move to console, the Age team worked to optimize the game for Xbox controllers, revamped the user interface to be console-specific, and added new tutorials designed for first time players to help achieve easy setup and success.

And with the surprise release came numerous accessibility features that allowed players to tailor their gameplay. This included adjustable difficulty settings, on-demand tutorials that help players learn the controls and basic gameplay mechanics, UI narration and Strong Contrast Mode, steady camera settings, and so much more. • How Lords of the Fallen’s Realm of the Dead Entered The Land of the Living

How Lords of the Fallen’s Realm of the Dead Entered The Land of the Living

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

“Well, it’s a beautiful story…” and so begins this excitable yet reflective conversation between Saul Gascon, executive producer and head of studio at Hexworks, and Cezar Virtosu, creative director at Hexworks. They’re about to share with me the development story of Lords of the Fallen, which launches today on Xbox Series X|S. Reminiscing about the initial stages of pre-production at the end of 2019/early 2020, which coincided with the establishing of Hexworks as a new studio, both developers recalled that very early on any follow up to the original 2014 game of the same name had to be a soulslike action-RPG.

“The original pitch we had signed off by CI Games was for a much smaller, narrative focused game that would follow the struggle of a templar-like character,” Gascon explains. “But we expanded it significantly because of the potential we could see. We’d have small strike teams that would work on a particular feature for enemies, the player character, bosses, etc. There was obviously a dedicated strike team for Umbral, and then every two weeks they’d check in with us and the game’s other directors.”

Ah yes, Umbral. Lords of the Fallen offers players the unique opportunity to traverse from the in-game’s realm of the living – Axiom – and that of the dead, Umbral, at will. This mechanic, possible through a mix of hardware (the Xbox Series X|S’s ultra-fast SSD) and software (the game is one of the first to launch built using Unreal Engine 5) provides an exciting and innovative gameplay experience. Using a powerful and mysterious lamp, the player’s character can peek into this supernatural and nightmarish realm in real time, or even transport themselves to it on demand to solve puzzles, overcome enemies, and more.

Umbral also works as a second chance for players; a notoriously challenging genre, Lord of the Fallen’s take on an action-RPG sees the protagonist wake up in the realm of the dead the first time they’re defeated by an enemy. That’s one more chance to take them down and eventually find their way back to Axiom, or suffer defeat once more and perish. “Umbral came to be from several seeds that we planted with Cezar,” Gascon says. “We wanted to be disruptive and change a bit of the action-RPG’s death loop gameplay. It’s such a key part of the genre, we wanted it so when you died in Axiom you arrived in Umbral… somehow. And at first, we didn’t know how.”

We wanted to be disruptive and change a bit of the action-RPG’s death loop gameplay. It’s such a key part of the genre, we wanted it so when you died in Axiom you arrived in Umbral… somehow.

    Saul Gascon

“Umbral became our unique selling point to make us distinctive in the action-RPG genre,” continues Gascon, before Virtosu quickly adds that the journey to iterate on the idea was elusive. “Saul and I had Soul Reaver in our heads as one of the points of inspiration,” he says. “But Umbral expanded beyond those references in time. To be perfectly honest, for the first year and a half of development we weren’t sure if it was going to deliver on our vision. For some time, it was the same layout as Axiom but in a different hue… however, we were fortunate to be able to take the early versions out to playtest, and the feedback was very positive.”

Gascon explains how the iterative process Umbral worked: “We started having dynamic spawns; we tried a dynamic defense mode so when you died, you’d control the protagonist’s ghost in the realm and have to defend your physical body from otherworldly spirts until you generated enough power to resurrect,” he says, before clarifying why the mechanic was cut. “Simply, it didn’t work well if the player died during boss battles.”

Ultimately, it was the Umbral strike team that went rogue and – in Virtosu’s own words – “did a black op” without the directors’ knowledge. The idea of a lamp that would allow players to gaze into the realm of the dead was always part of the player’s toolset, but because of various technical and design decisions, it mean it was only usable when standing still. What the strike team did was work out how to make it dynamic, so players could look into Umbral while still moving around in Axiom.

The results wowed Gascon, Virtosu, and the others; they knew it was what they’d been looking for. “It became the lynchpin of the experience,” reveals Saul. “We basically had everything confluence around that idea of Umbral,” he adds in satisfaction.

While developed remotely with staff around the world, the cores of the team were based in and around Spain and Romania, two countries steeped in religious and spiritual beliefs. It was therefore perhaps inevitable against this cultural backdrop that Lords of the Fallen’s development would be inferred by the two cultures – especially the gothic and superstitious stories of Romania. A Bucharest native who splits his time between the Romanian capital and Barcelona, Virtosu sheds some light: “Romania has a religious and spiritual people; we’re afraid of ghosts and superstition. We have a reverence for death.”

He continues, “For instance, during funerals we take a long and twisted route to the cemetery so the dead cannot find their way; when the procession crosses a bridge, we put pile of money on a towel and then remove it so the dead cannot pay the toll. During the development of the game, we looked to tap into this rich tapestry woven across Romania and wider folklore – the fear of the dark is such a primal fear.”

A lore bible was produced very early on, a source of reference for the game’s locations, characters, and more. For instance, for the game’s overwhelmingly foreboding monastery, the duo would pose their questions like: Where was the aqueduct in relation to this towering landmark? How did the monks bring the water into the abbey? Where would the rich pray in relation to the poor? “We had a lot of lore to work with, that’s why it was easy for us to make rapid progress,” says Virtosu.

“Most of our team are at senior points in our careers, so when we encountered a challenge there was like a symbiotic relationship between us all that meant we were able to quickly overcome it,” Gascon tells us.

Virtosu adds: “We iterated relentlessly; we didn’t have to find things to remove because anything superfluous to the game was cut early on: Confusing layouts, removing things for better navigation. In those early months we were just 12 people and approaching the first deadlines. But it looked good! We did a lot of prototyping,”

He smiles: “Saul would say it was like lightning in a bottle.”

Or maybe, perhaps, it was like a mystical and otherworldly lamp shining a way forward for the action-RPG genre.

In this post, we sit down for an exclusive developer interview with Remco de Rooji, Studio and Game Director at Triangle Studios to find out more about the game.

    From Space Screenshot

How did the development of From Space start? What were your motivations for creating the game?

We started development of From Space with the creation of its prototype the tail end of 2019. It was a very important moment for the studio as it was always our ambition to work on our own ideas for games, and it was like taking a big leap of faith. It took almost a year before we were able to start working on the project full-time. From that moment, it still took about two years until we first launched on Steam in November 2022.

From Space was a way for the studio to reinvent itself. We have really come into our own, and we plan to continue building From Space as well as new co-operative multiplayer games for years to come.

What was the biggest hurdle for the team when creating From Space? How did you overcome it?

Online multiplayer was definitely a big challenge. Up to this point, we had only done couch co-op games, and we really wanted players to have an online experience with From Space. How we overcame this problem? Basically, by spending a lot of time on it!

    From Space Screenshot

From Space is visually stunning! What were your inspirations behind the art style of the game?

I’ve personally always loved games that take a stylized approach, but to be honest one of the main reasons for the game’s visual appearance is that we have a relatively small team.  This means that if we are to build an entire game world, we need to carefully decide on how and where to spend our time to get the most out of it.

We are very happy with our incredibly talented artists who have carefully crafted the game’s visuals to where they are today. Even after all this time, I’m still impressed by it!

What made you and your team choose space? What came first – the gameplay or the setting?

Let me return the question: Where else would pink aliens come from? Hah! Actually, old sci-fi movies were an inspiration for From Space, but come to think of it, there is very little actual space in From Space

Who came up with the design for the aliens? They’re cute and scary in equal measure – how did you find such a great balance between fun and terror?

The original design was done by our previous concept artist Pascal Brander (who still makes fantastic artworks by the way). The alien designs were even more basic at first, but we’ve evolved their appearance and given them different physical abilities so the player can more easily distinguish them when they attack in massive hordes (and believe me, they do attack in hordes).

    From Space Screenshot

The game has seen success on Steam already. What differences will be available on launch for the console edition?

We’ve added a brand-new Horde Mode to the game that we call From Space: Resistance. In this mode, you can team up with friends or strangers and fight ever more difficult waves of aliens on different arenas. Each round earns you tokens and energy that you can spend unlocking and upgrading weapons, items and perks. Oh, and there are medals to earn and challenges to complete. You could say that From Space is now two-games-in-one!

On top of that there are many dozens (maybe hundreds) of small improvements that we’ve added. You can definitely say that Xbox players get to experience the best possible version of From Space on day one!

Could you take us through some of the aliens we’ll be fighting? What are some insider tactics to ensure we survive the apocalypse?

Well, first you have your Crawlers. Easy to dispatch but they can overwhelm you when they are in large groups. We have Hoppers, who jump at your face, Slackers who are slow but have a longer reach with their stretchy arms, we have Brawlers who deflect your attacks with their shields and Boomers who will simply run at you and explode in your face. There’s more than that, and they even come in several Possessed Variants, which means that some of your weapons are less or more effective, so you’ll need to think about your loadout before you go into battle.

    From Space Screenshot

What are your top tips for Horde Mode?

Learn how to play as a team. You could go running straight into the fight like Leroy Jenkins, but you’re probably not going to last very long. If you’re playing with friends, try to find ways for your weapons, items and perks to complement each other… Or everyone equips a bunch of grenades and see how far you can make it!

What is your favourite loadout to use in Horde Mode?

I’m a simple guy, my approach is to blow things up as quickly as possible. I usually equip a grenade launcher or a rocket launcher to do that job for me. As a side-arm, the new plasma pistol is very effective. I love bringing a turret as one of my items because they harvest a lot of kills, and to top it off I’ll equip a couple of perks that allow me to be a good team player, such as the Quick Revive perk or the Med Kit Crafter perk.

Download From Space on the Xbox store – and it’s also available with Xbox Game Pass.

  • Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Celebrates Its 7th Birthday With a Huge Update

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Celebrates Its 7th Birthday With a Huge Update

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

Many Dragon Ball games have been released over the years – ranging from 3D arena fighters to action RPGs following Goku’s legendary story.

However, out of the many released, the Xenoverse series has held a grip on fans’ hearts with its unique take on the Dragon Ball universe.

The original Dragon Ball Xenoverse made its debut in 2015, offering a truly original story and the opportunity for fans to create their own customizable characters, where they try to save history (or Goku’s story as they know it) by taking on the role of Time Patrollers who serve to protect the timeline.

In 2016, to the delight of fans, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 launched, and it’s still going strong to this day. As of 2023, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 (also referred to as DBXV2) continues to see updates and content drops, and now the game is taking a further step towards the future.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 players will receive a new free big update on October 12, that includes the Festival of Universes event, a new multiplayer battle mode called Cross Versus, and more!

To celebrate, we’ve asked Jun Song, the Producer of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, to answer a few questions about the game and the update.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 has been going strong for more than 7 years; what are some challenges you’ve faced when trying to keep the content fresh for the player base?

Jun Song: First of all, I would like to thank everyone who is still playing Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 seven years after its release. Thank you for your continued warm support! It’s not easy to keep meeting expectations over the long term, but we have always tried to keep Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 close to our players.

We have implemented about 17 free updates to date, and by regularly implementing new Raid Quests, customizable items, and other content, we have always strived to provide an environment where players can play the game with a fresh perspective.

We have also released several paid DLC packs, most recently “Conton City Vote Pack,”  which includes characters selected by player votes, and the “Hero of Justice Pack,” which consists of the main characters and original scenario from the latest “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” movie.

Outside the game, a “Super Fashion Contest,” a player-participatory event where players compete to see how fashionable their avatars are, which they created with their own ideas in mind, was also held.

Whether it is updates or events like this, the biggest challenge is knowing what kind of content is sought after, how popular it is, and how players play it. And at the same time, I believe this is the reason why Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 has grown so much.

After many years, DBXV2 is receiving an additional multiplayer mode! What inspired Cross Versus, and what should fans look forward to?

Jun Song: Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, has, like other games that have been running for a long time, experienced a divide between new players and existing players due to differences in experience and opportunities to play.

We thought that if there was content that both new and existing players could enjoy together, more people could enjoy the world of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, and we came up with the idea of “Cross Versus” content.

Cross Versus is a new battle mode where two teams of 3  compete against one another. The basic rule is that each team must earn mission points in different areas of a map to open a boss area, and the team that defeats the boss faster than the other team, or collects the maximum number of mission points, wins.

However, Cross Versus is not just a team game. For example, all participating players start at the same level and must level up during the battle. How you become stronger depends on your own strengths and preferred style of play, which can be freely changed. There is also a mechanism to interfere with the opposing team’s moves, so it is essential to know how to contribute to the team and to assess the battle situation.

Whether you are good at battles or not so good at battles, the game is designed to allow everyone to play an active role, so please join in and experience the fun. We also offer new badges as rewards for completing various conditions in Cross Versus battles – and you can show them off to other players before you begin, so there’s and incentive to succeed in various different ways.

The update also brings the Festival of Universes event. What can fans can expect from that?

Jun Song: Festival of Universes is a regularly held Universe event that will be implemented starting with this update.

Players choose one universe of their choice, and become a part of a team featuring all players in that universe. Participating in the event earning earns Glory Points for that universe during the event period. Once the event ends, the universe with the most Glory Points wins. Glory Points can be earned by playing almost all modes available in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. Of course, Cross Versus is also eligible. In a minor way, I recommend the Milk Delivery Quest, which also offers a change of pace!

We also have new lobbies and new reward items for this event. Please play the game and check out what new encounters you can expect.

Are there any new player skills that fans can look forward to?

Jun Song: In this update, we will implement the Awoken Skill “Ultra Instinct,” which can be applied to all avatars of all races.

Upon awakening, it consumes energy to evade an opponent’s attack automatically, and with additional input, a counterattack becomes possible. An exclusive technique power recovery skill becomes available, and the Ki Blast attack is transformed into a special one.

We invite you to try it out on your own avatar so that you, too, can become Ultra Instinct!

While DBXV2 has a welcoming community, like any long-running series it can be daunting for new players to come in. Do you have any advice for new players who want to come in and try the new modes?

Jun Song: The new events and new battle modes that will be implemented in this update can be enjoyed by all players, regardless of their gameplay history.

For example, in Cross Versus, everyone starts at level 1, and the system allows players to level up and gain ultimate skill during battles, so even those who are just starting out in the game can participate. Festival of Universes is also an event that can be enjoyed by playing all kinds of modes, so if you like battles, you can enjoy battles; if you are not that good at battles, you can enjoy quests, and so on.

At this time when Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is going through a major evolution, we hope that new players will join us and have fun with everyone.

Do you have any final comments for the Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 community?

Jun Song: Even with seven years of updates in place, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 will continue to evolve, and we hope you will continue to enjoy the game! The update will be available on October 12!

Represent your universe and compete to be the best in the Festival of Universes or take on the challenge of the new Cross Versus battle mode when the free big update for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 goes live on October 12, 2023.
