Unleash the madness of Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, Park Beyond’s newest DLC, today! The theme park game’s unique ‘impossification’ system lets you elevate every game element to a level beyond your wildest dreams – perfect for a chicken adventure you’ll never forget.
The goal during production was to provide the player with the opportunity to recreate and expand on the movie in their own theme park! For this we worked in close collaboration with Academy Award-winning animation studio, Aardman. Early in the DLC production phase, we had the unique opportunity to watch a pre-release version of the movie and get our inspiration going. Tons of ideas were brainstormed, sketches made, and scenes selected to build on. Our initial key decision and baseline for every asset was to determine the general scale. The movie is shown from the perspective of chickens, making everything look huge. Translating this concept into our theme park design; we scaled everything up so that visitors would feel chicken-sized when wandering the park too.
The creation of the flat rides was the first challenge. Carousels, Ferris wheels and similar attractions are usually the highlights of every theme park; especially in Park Beyond where they can be ‘impossified’ into over-the-top fun centerpieces never seen before. We thought about many great-looking rides but came to the conclusion that looks alone wouldn’t do justice to the great story of the movie. Rather than prioritizing appearance only, we started to select the most mesmerizing scenes and figured out how we could tell their story in a single ride and its upgrade. The result is two flat rides transform into a highlight of the movie. For example, one of the rides resembles a Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget village-themed thrill ride in its base version. When upgrading, it transforms into an action-driven, over-the-top chase scene which takes direct reference from a counterpart in the movie that leads away from the village.
For the rollercoaster we didn’t just want to provide a new track type. We wanted it to be part of the Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget universe. We looked at the coaster cars, tracks, struts and thought of how the chickens would build it, resulting in a unique makeshift style cobbled together from recycled junk. Complimenting this wonky track, we designed four ‘chicken style’ cars based on flowerpots, sinks and a lot of duct tape. On top, we added a car in the style of the ‘Fun-Land Farms’ van that has several appearances in the movie, as well as an ‘egg with chicken legs’ we all know from the trailer, settling a well-known dilemma once and for all.
Expanding beyond rides, we also created two brand new Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget-inspired sandbox maps, which we designed according to the main locations of the movie. The most challenging one was the ‘Fun-Land Farms’ map, inspired by a theme park for chickens that is shown in the movie. Since the Fun-Land Farms in the movie is an indoor park, we needed to find new solutions for the lighting and map border which led to a one-of-a-kind environment. . Additionally, time was spent to match the distinctive ground visuals of the original, leading to a de facto new look for the map.
The distinctive environments of the movie also had a huge impact on how we designed the scenery objects that the player can use to build shops or decorate their parks with. In contrast to classical themes like ‘Western’, ‘Candyville’ and ‘Alien Planet,’ there wasn’t just one Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget environment throughout the movie. Therefore, we identified three main ones which we turned into sets of multiple assets. Overall, a lot of effort was spent to make sure the player could recreate the whole movie in detail. At some point during production, we even noticed that the initial planned number of scenery objects was too low for what we needed, so we added an extra set, resulting in a whopping 280+ pieces to get creative with. On top of that, we designed a wide set of prefabricated shops to make sure that everyone can start a Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Park right away.
Being Chicken Run fans ourselves, creating the DLC was an extraordinary experience and lots of fun. While there were challenges, all of them turned into unique designs and benefits for the player. While there is already lots to ‘eggsplore’, the assets just lay the foundation of what players will create with the community. Thanks to Community Content introduced to the game in October, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget creations can be shared cross-platform directly from the game menu. We’re definitely looking forward to all the chicken madness that is to come!
Finally, as a thank-you from the studio to the early adopters of the game, players who pre-ordered Park Beyond as a Standard, Impossified and Deluxe edition, digital or physical, will be able to claim this DLC for free when it launches. The process to redeem the DLC will be shared on Bandai Namco Europe.
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget Theme World is now available along with the release of the movie exclusively on Netflix.

Best Game to Help The Kids (and Yourself) Unwind
A mixture of sugar, no school, and impending presents would put any cooped-up family on edge around the holidays – so allow us to recommend Minecraft as a salve. Starting a new seed and hopping into a split-screen co-op is incredibly simple – and once you’re in, the options are limitless.
You could allow the family a single run in Survival mode before heading to bed, or offer them a chance to create a holiday wonderland in Creative mode. And you never know, that incredibly relaxing music might just help them drift off to sleep in the end, too.
Best Game For When The Kids Have Gone To Bed
There’s a chance that the kids and your old aunt don’t want to see monsters being mowed down in great numbers, but when night falls, Sanctuary will welcome you. Diablo IV is the perfect place to game to let off some steam after long days, offering copious amounts of bombastic combat, an immersive story campaign, and some Midwinter terrors as part of the ongoing seasons. With couch co-op, a friend can also get in on the action too, making Diablo IV the perfect game to curl up on the sofa with.
Best Game For An Outdoor Adventure While You’re Stuck Indoors
It can be difficult to get out for fresh air when you’re at home during the holiday season, but Grounded can offer a grassy escape for us all. The backyard provides the perfect opportunity to get back to nature in all its forms, building a base to survive, and fighting off marauding insects as you go. Grounded also just released the Make It and Break It update, which lets you build your very own version of the backyard with a suite of intuitive tools and gadgets. The expansive feature will keep everyone occupied for hours, but be warned, you might become the test subjects of some extremely chaotic creations.
Plus, if you’ve got a console and a PC at home, and a Game Pass Ultimate Subscription, you and a chosen family member can team up and navigate a treacherous backyard together. And if a couple of visiting cousins happen to have consoles at home, they can join in using Xbox Cloud Gaming, too, letting all four of you play.
Best Game For When You Can’t Get A Moment’s Peace
There are some holidays where sitting down for a cup of tea is nigh on impossible, never mind gathering around the telly to play a video game. Fortunately, Vampire Survivors’ high-octane fun is easy to pick up and put down during those restless days, and its digestible rounds of 30 minutes or (usually) less means that everybody can have a go, whether it’s on their own or in couch co-op mode with a buddy.
While Vampire Survivors has its own subtle narrative and fun progression system, in which you can unlock new levels, characters and powerups, it’s a great game to dip in and out of at your leisure, and it’s also available on Game Pass. Plus, if someone can’t wait their turn, they can always jump into a solo run with Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) on mobile.
Best Game to Play for the Entirety of the Holiday Break
If you’re back at home with the family for two weeks, you’ll definitely need something to do while you’re there. So why not set yourself and a family member a challenge? Can you make it through every single campaign in Halo: The Master Chief Collection?
Comprising 67 missions spread over Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo 4, it’s a huge, nostalgic chunk of classic sci-fi shooting to sink your teeth into – and it’s all available in split-screen, and via Game Pass. And that’s even before you start messing about in multiplayer…
Best Game for Recreating the Unique Stress of Making a Holiday Dinner
Look, we don’t know exactly why you’d want to simulate making dinner for dozens of people when you might be doing it already – but we do know exactly how to do it. Step up, Overcooked 2, the game that laughs in the face of the ‘too many cooks’ cliché, and is also conveniently available via Game Pass.
Between you and your family and friends, you’ll be able to test your resolve in a busy kitchen, prepping ingredients and plating up as fast as possible — perhaps even learning how to turn real-life cooking into a high-speed party game in the process (but probably without the comedy set pieces in the game itself). Of course, once all that’s done, there’s another key stress caused by holiday cooking. We cover that in the next category…
Best Game for Working out Who Needs to Wash the Dishes
The holidays are a time of peace, love, and being on your best behavior in front of people you might dislike. However, that doesn’t have to apply to entertainment. Party Animals is a competitive brawler that allows you to channel that chaos through fluffy, flailing critters, bashing each other around for a moment of glory, and the chance to evade the cleaning up.
Party Animals benefits from split screen co-op, so up to four players in the same room can join the same game and battle it out, either against each other or in teams. Just connect up a new controller, join as a guest player, and you’re good to go. Party Animals is also available on Game Pass, allowing everyone to hop into the action on just one subscription!
Best Game To Explore a Galaxy Far, Far Away
It’s only a matter of time before classic movies are shared by family and friends during the festive period, and Star Wars, with its installments spanning generations, is up there among them. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, lets you and another player experience classic storylines and explore all of the iconic areas of the Galaxy.
Brick by brick, you can make your way through all nine Skywalker Saga films, with hundreds of iconic characters to unlock from the likes of Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Princess Leia, to more recent additions such as Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren. Available on Xbox via Game Pass, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the perfect game for your loved ones to enjoy while you take care of those endless holiday tasks. You can also pick up the Galactic Edition, which features over 400 characters from the expanded Star Wars universe.
Best Game to Play When an Ocean Divides You
Sometimes circumstances are such that not all of us can be in the same room together for some family gaming fun this holiday season, but that doesn’t mean we can’t set out on a gaming jaunt together! Sea of Thieves provides that perfect blend of adventure, good times, and downtime on the waves to catch up over the holidays.
Travel to distant islands seeking fortune while sharing your riches with family and friends. Take down a ship full of skeletons while sipping on eggnog (just don’t get any on your headset microphone) or share pumpkin pie recipes as you’re heading to port to cash in your hard-earned plunder. Maybe even sing a holiday shanty! There’s plenty of new content in Season 10, including the introduction of Guilds. You can also set sail in Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island, a charming crossover that allows you to explore the classic point-and-click series in a set of Tall Tales. All three of the Tall Tales are available now, should you be craving nostalgia during the holiday season.
However you choose to play it, Sea of Thieves offers plenty for you to enjoy together when distant shores are keeping you apart.
About ten hours into my Starfield playthrough, I started collecting ‘Earth books’ for fun. I thought it would be a fun personality quirk; my celestial cowboy scuttling across systems looking for long-lost literary links to the past. Forget precious ores and mysterious celestial relics, I wanted art, and Starfield’s cluttered landscapes allowed me to cram my cargo hold full of whatever junk I desired.
For as long as I can remember, I (and many others) have been sprinting around in Bethesda’s vast, open worlds, hoovering up every form of trinket and treasure we can find. Often it’s something useful, like a rare or valuable resource. For the most part, it’s just junk – it’s worthless, you can’t consume it or craft with it, whether it’s books, weird ornaments or far more potatoes than you could ever need.
Why is it all there? How is it made? And perhaps most importantly – why has Bethesda stuck to its guns on filling its RPGs with endless items, and why are we so compelled to collect them?
To answer these burning queries, I sought out the best possible representatives for Bethesda’s art of clutter. John Valenti, Lead Set Dressing Artist and Robert Wisnewski, Lead Props Artist, have worked together to create thousands of assets for Bethesda’s roster of mammoth titles, from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion right up to Starfield. If anyone can explain how this stuff works, it’s them.
So, where do they start? Wisnewski laughs and says while this question might sound simple, it really isn’t. The short answer is, Bethesda began with a huge list of items that Starfield absolutely needed, but by the end of development, that list was about 20 times bigger than their original estimate. One of the main things that guides this ever-growing list of objects is lore created by the wider team.
“We try and learn about the people that inhabit these cities, settlements, and outposts, including factions,” Valenti explains. “What are they like? How do people live and what items would they need to survive? What types of jobs would people have out in the settled systems? What items would they need to use to complete their tasks?”
The research gets even more granular; the team starts to consider the personalities of the individual NPCs that inhabit a particular space, be it a politician, an outlaw, or a miner. What objects would a worker have on their desk? What tools would a medical professional have? What personal items would they keep? All of these small questions contribute to the larger picture of these environments, that are all deeply personal to the characters that live within them.
With thousands of different little items to contend with, a management system is needed. This is where ‘clutter sets’ come in – groups of objects that are organised in some way, be it individual assets that can be used to form other objects – kind of like game dev Lego – or, for smaller items, bits that are pooled together by a theme. Wisnewski tells us that it’s not viable to make unique clutter for every single space in a game as expansive as Starfield, so objects are created with multiple uses in mind.
Setting The Scene
All of Starfield’s environments are populated by hand. There’s a system that can randomly generate important gameplay loot, such as ammo, healing items, and thematic objects for quest rewards, but anything considered ‘non-essential’ – every mug, every coffee stain, every scuff mark on the floor – is placed with intent, and with a personal touch.
“Set dressing is best when artists are doing the work and making the decisions about what should go where,” Wisnewski says. “We generally feel better when things are done that way. I feel there’s no better source material than what you see in the real world. I look at ceilings and lights. Some of the pipework and cables in the Zenimax building were inspiration for ceilings in Starfield. Stains on buildings. Construction sites. Airports. Recycling centers and landfills are a goldmine for ideas to me.”
Wisnewski adds that he often envisions himself in game locations before populating them, and the pair have even added easter eggs from their real lives to Starfield‘s environments. One example is a set of plushies arranged like the cover of The Ten Apples Up on Top by Dr Seuss, which Wisnewksi highlights as a nod to his children. This arrangement of objects appears randomly inside Starfield’s abandoned research towers.
“We could probably write a book about all of the little easter eggs that appear in our games,” he says.
We give our artists the creative freedom to make believable and lived spaces, and I believe that this is what makes our games so special, and it is why I love working on them.
John Valenti
Valenti adds that it’s his goal to use miscellaneous objects to create a scene that has meaning, but is also open-ended enough for the player to come up with their own conclusion based on their own unique perspective. This is where that earlier research of environments and who occupies them comes in.
“I work with the designer to figure out who is inhabiting the location, run through the quest and get an idea of who they are, and [then] set dress and design that location based off their preferences and personalities,” Valenti explains. “If the location is unoccupied, I create my own characters – who occupies this location? – and flesh out their personality with things like what hobbies they have or what types of food they prefer. My approach to an occupied office or home will differ from an unoccupied one. People separate work from personal life, living differently from office to home. The office may be more minimalist, organized, and clean, while a home may be a bit more dishevelled, densely cluttered and have knickknacks scattered around on display.”
“We give our artists the creative freedom to determine what goes where and let them have fun with it to make believable and lived spaces, and I believe that this is what makes our games so special, and it is why I love working on them.“
Life Off Earth
One particularly prevalent theme in Starfield is the fate of Earth, and the story of its demise is represented in the artifacts that made their way from the now-abandoned planet into the Settled Systems. There are a number of different museums scattered across the galaxy that make a point of archiving a number of ‘key’ Earth objects, in the same way any real-world museum would, from everyday household items to historical milestones.
“The first location that pops into my mind regarding old Earth clutter is the NASA Museum,” Valenti tells me. “It was important for us to preserve and pay homage to early space flight in this museum, so we kept many of the museum model displays intact, so that they were not only recognizable to the player but also helped tell the main quest’s story.”
This location also gave players a chance to pick up interesting, thematic rewards that feed into the story about Earth. Valenti adds: “I felt like these items may not have been important enough for humans to take during the time of evacuation, but are important and interesting enough for the player to see as a collectable and worth taking home, whether that be their ship or outpost, for decoration.”
A second example stems from a Starfield sidequest, which follows the story of a colony ship that has been floating around in space for 200 years. The fate of the ECS Constant and its crew is up to the player, but the clutter found aboard the ship deftly weaves a tapestry of a small group of people suspended in time, and quite literally, space.
“We wanted to have some historic pieces on the ship, objects that we still use and hold dearly to this day – things like baseball trophies and basketballs – as well as some Earth produce that would be used throughout the Settled Systems,” Valenti explains. “It made sense to have some Earth-related clutter on the ship passed down [within families], and it made everything feel a bit more personal. These items are relatable and normal to us, and to the Constant members, but for other characters that live throughout the Settled Systems, these objects may have been ancient artifacts, or even ‘alien’. I find that to be a very interesting spin.”
Both the NASA Museum and the ECS Constant feel like very different locations, telling very different stories – and so much of that feeling comes from the clutter spread around within them. You might not notice it in the moment, but it’s clear that Bethesda Game Studios puts a huge premium on creating a vibe through junk alone.
Architectural Ingress
Starfield‘s environments, both interior and exterior, begin as empty architectural shells, to which level designers and artists add a wide variety of medium and large objects to. This includes everything from machinery, electronics, light fixtures, containers, displays, shelving, rugs, furniture, signs – allobjects that a player can’t directly interact with.
Once those elements are in place, the smaller set dressing objects are used to further define and personalize the locations. This is the ‘clutter’ that the player can interact with; food, medical items, tabletop decorations, tools, sculptures, games and toys, minerals and inorganic objects, ammo boxes, switches – thousands upon thousands of different assets in total according to the pair.
Deciding which items should be immovable and which can be picked up is described by Valenti as a “challenging and interactive process” throughout the course of development. This is down to the sheer number of objects, how they interact with one another, and what feels right as a player. An item’s scale, value and functionality helps the team decide which category it should slot into.
“There is a visual component to these decisions as well.,” Valenti adds. “For example, if a storage box or a barrel is closed with a lid, it can be assumed that it is filled with something and that it is too heavy to move, so we make it a static object. Collectable objects are typically eye-catching items that are small enough to grab and go. If I want to place it in my outpost, I want to be able to loot it!”
Some larger items that don’t quite fit into those categories are marked as movable statics – objects that will, for example, fly across the room if they’re subject to an explosion. Wisnewski adds: “We make those items so environments seem more lively when gameplay physics occur: explosions, projectiles, powers, and NPCs/players bumping into them.”
Traditionally, Bethesda strives to give players the opportunity to loot as many things as possible from extremely interactive environments, and Wisnewski adds that the decision comes out of a very simple conclusion – players like to do it.
“Many people, myself included, love collecting objects in games, and lots of players love to use lootable items as decorations in their ships and outposts, or just for fun.” Wisnewski says. “For me, I do everything possible to find ways to exploit our systems during our testing phases in order to keep obscene amounts of items. Allowing our players the freedom to do absurd things with [physics-enabled] objects to make themselves and others laugh is really important to us.”
Allowing our players the freedom to do absurd things with [physics-enabled] objects to make themselves and others laugh is really important to us.
Robert Wisnewski
“And oh boy, do our players really like pushing that limit! Our programmers work miracles in optimizing code so that players can largely do as they please. Jamie Mallory’s sandwich collecting is a perfect example of this.”
Perfectly Balanced
All of this work is a delicate balancing act in a number of ways. While Bethesda enjoys giving players freedom to collect practically any junk they want, there shouldn’t be so many shiny trinkets on offer that players feel overwhelmed.
“Too many items can make inventory management difficult, and that’s something we had to consider as well” Wisnewski says. “Densely cluttered environments vs ‘too much stuff’ to carry is a constant balancing act during development.”
Clutter Consistency
It’s rare for modern games to include such a gargantuan number of non-essential items, but for Bethesda, it’s a core part of the flavor of RPG they are known and lauded for.
“Having interesting settings where the player can find lots of items – and come up with stories as to why the objects are there and who lived in those spaces – is as important to us as having gameplay reasons for having those objects,” Wisnewski says. “Game mechanics aren’t always the primary reason as to why we do things like this… sometimes it’s just because it makes the game more fun.”
Valenti says that Bethesda has stuck with this formula because it makes their worlds feel more believable, and adds: “We want to empower players to play however they want and make the game their own, and having interactive objects allows for some magical things to happen.”
That’s a sentiment that many players share. In the rolling peaks of The Elder Scrolls, the quirky wastelands of Fallout, and now, the awe-inspiring retro-futurism of Starfield – that intricately placed clutter is what makes the environments we spend hundreds of hours wandering through so special. Every hand-crafted bedroom, office, abandoned outpost, is a microcosm of Starfield‘s incredible universe, full of characters, history and hope. It’s also a symbol of player agency; the freedom to horde cheese wheels, or sandwiches, or in my case, 37 copies of War of the Worlds. It’s your story.
I couldn’t leave the conversation without finding out what these two masters of clutter favored above all else. Valenti’s answer is prompt and sweet: My Friend Wilby, a series of collectible crochet creatures. For Wisnewski, it’s the paper airplane, which he describes as a “small easter egg” relating to the Frontier. He adds: “Someone will eventually figure it out.”

A chill descends from the frozen depths of the mountains in Midwinter Blight, giving theDiablo IV team the chance to get into the holiday spirit… and try something new.
From December 12 to January 2, cull savage Blightfiends and defend yourself from the Red-Cloaked Horror as your try to preserve any semblance of hope for the denizens of the Fractured Peaks. Midwinter Blight is our first limited-time event in Diablo IV, bringing something special to Sanctuary.
Chance to Experiment
In Diablo IV, players can enter Sanctuary through either the Seasonal or the Eternal realm. The Eternal realm is where evergreen challenges and core gameplay endures in Sanctuary. Many sweeping changes to the game affect and influence this world state.
Our Seasonal realm is where we introduce new Seasonal content, such as Midwinter Blight. The Seasonal realm gives us a chance to tinker and introduce new and exciting types of gameplay. Since the majority of seasonal specific gameplay doesn’t persist once the season is over—save for mechanics we may re-introduce in interesting ways—it gives us a broader reign to try new things without affecting the Eternal realm.
And now introducing: limited-time events. Similar to the Seasonal realm, these Events typically only affect a specific region for a much shorter duration of time relative to Seasons. This gives us even more free room to tinker and try new things.
The Magic of the Holidays in Midwinter Blight
Midwinter Blight introduces Gileon the bard, sadistic Blightfiends, macabre Frigid Husks, and the diabolical monstrous Goat fiend known as the Red-Cloaked Horror. These colorful and frightening aspects of Sanctuary only persist until the end of Midwinter Blight.
A Midwinter Blight gameplay-specific wrinkle lies in the Aspect of Dawn. This offensive Aspect is exclusive to the limited-time event; it increases your attack and movement speed for 12 seconds, and when empowered by the Midwinter Ward, reduces its cooldown by 1 second for every demon slain.
Additionally, the special Gileon’s Brew Elixir provides an additional XP boost (10% more than typical Elixirs) and works across Sanctuary, not just in the Fractured Peaks. These unique elements provide an extra boon to players…perhaps even a little magic of the Holidays?
Despite Gileon’s Brew and the Aspect of Dawn persisting past Midwinter Blight’s end, they have specific mechanics that rely on the location and gameplay elements in this limited-time event.
Demons Just Want to Have Fun
While content like Abattoir of Zir is directed at the most intense of Diablo IV fans, limited-time events are available for players looking to explore Sanctuary for the first time and try something new. The overall gameplay loop is tighter, you can come away with some sweet cosmetics, and it’s not meant to be nearly as trying as a Level 100 Nightmare Dungeon.
Midwinter Blight arrives at a time in Season of Blood where players may be chasing after Uber Uniques or trying their hand at the Echo of Lilith. By scouring the land for Frigid Husks to dismantle and Blightfiends to slay, chasing after some holiday exclusives should be a great way to enjoy the season.
The Holidays are meant to be enjoyed, and what better way to do it than restoring the Hibernal Square in Kyovashad. We’ll share a flagon of Gileon’s Brew in Midwinter Square soon. Happy slaying!
The Tekken team care a lot about their series’ story, proudly telling visitors to a recent hands-on preview that it holds the world record for the longest-running single story in video games. Beginning almost 30 years ago, the saga of the Mishima clan and the King of Iron Fist Tournament has taken many twists and turns (dropping family members into a volcano has never been more dramatic), and Tekken 8promises the boldest, most cinematic version yet.
But Tekken 8 has a secret – it effectively contains two story modes this time, on very different subjects.
As you’d expect, the core new Story mode continues the tale of Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima, father and son rivals, each with literally devilish powers, and the creation of a new King of Iron Fist Tournament. And don’t worry, if you aren’t up to speed on how we got here (and there’s a lot to catch up on), you can watch digests of every story in the mainline Tekken games before you head in.
It’s clear that Bandai Namco are going all-in on Story this time around – this mode is more cinematic than ever before, with cutscenes weaving fights together seamlessly. And it wastes no time in getting up to speed – the story begins with Jin riding a motorcycle up a skyscraper, before throwing it at the helicopter Kazuya is riding.
Subtlety is not on the agenda for Tekken 8 and that’s no bad thing – in just four chapters, I took lead character Jin from a multi-stage battle against Kazuya (transforming into Devil Jin along the way), saw Kazuya shoot the world’s satellites out of the sky, and set up a tournament to decide not just who’s the strongest fighter, but which nations get to survive his superpowered onslaught. It’s gratifyingly over-the-top, and has a lot of fun with introducing characters old and new to spar with Jin along the way.
What surprised me more is that Tekken 8 effectively contains a whole other story mode in the form of Arcade Quest. This new mode is part-tutorial, part-story, and part challenge gauntlet, asking you to create a chibi-like avatar, and take them through a hyper-stylized take on the world of Tekken 8’s arcade scene. It’s a beautifully light-hearted affair, teaming you up with a group of would-be Tekken champions, fighting their way through increasingly tough opponents to the top of the game – and it also acts a paean to the shrinking arcade industry, recalling halcyon days hunched over coin-op machines.
It’s a perfect mode for newcomers to the game, offering useful tutorials on the game’s basic systems, its new Heat system (which offers one-per-round special attacks to create more aggressive battles), character customization, and more. It also introduces the new Super Ghost Battle mechanic, which sees an AI opponent learning your style of play across multiple modes, and offering fights that not only test your mettle, but could expose weaknesses in your game, helping you to improve organically through trial and error rather than pure guesswork.
As I say, it’s clear that the Tekken team care as much about their stories as their mechanics – which stay rooted in Tekken’s classic 3D fighter style, but make multiple changes to increase aggression and keep things spicy, from the new Heat system, to an increased focus on walls, destructibility and scene transitions. And for those who just want to immerse themselves in a story, the new Special Style Mode is the perfect assist. By tapping LB in any fight, your regular buttons become super-powered, performing combos and specials with much simpler inputs, and allowing you to see the best of your chosen character without having to become a master.
There’s much more I didn’t get to try in my time with the game – notably, including a mode that includes storylines for all 32 playable characters, offering even more story – but it’s already clear that Tekken 8has many tales to tell.

The TEKKEN series is breaking into a new era!
The longest-running story in a video game franchise is coming back with state-of-the-art graphics and powerful new rivalries.
Stay tuned for TEKKEN 8!
Dive into the belly of the beast in the multi-award winning rhythm shooter’s latest free update: Horde Mode, which takes inspiration from roguelite design.
Discover the reasons behind this direction, and the kind of upgrades and choices you will make in your attempt to escape the beast’s maw.
The free new game mode launches alongside the new Purgatory DLC, which brings more original music.
We have just launched Metal: Hellsinger’s new Horde Mode, a free update that adds a new way to experience the heavy metal rhythm shooter. Horde Mode is all about distilling the game into its purest, burning essence, while adding a spark of something new into the mix: roguelite design.
We can’t tell you how excited we are to finally launch this update, and to see you all fight tooth and nail, guns roaring to every beat. Fear not as we dive into the belly of the beast, for metal thunders in our very souls.
Escape the Maw of Leviathan
What’s the expression, out of the frying pan and into the gaping maw of Leviathan? After wreaking blistering havoc in the Hells, The Unknown and Paz had their eyes set on the heavens, but fate is a fickle beast, and now they must escape through the teeth of the colossal Leviathan.
Your goal in Horde Mode is to fight through increasingly challenging waves of enemies in new arenas; floating rocks in a cavernous belly. A Hell within Hell. There are three stages on your way out of Leviathan. After the final stage, a new final boss will test you to your limits.
Horde Mode is designed for replayability. Every run is different. The stages’ layout changes between runs, and so do the powers you pick up between waves. After you fall – because fall you will – you can unlock permanent upgrades that you carry in each run.
Music is the infernal engine of Metal: Hellsinger, and it’s always at the core of our game design. That’s why we also added a way to create your own playlist before you enter Leviathan. Choose any number of songs from the game’s multi award-winning original score and the game will pick one randomly for each of the three stages.
Memories of Metal
In the depths of Leviathan, your powers have been sapped. But as you slay, guns bucking to the beat, the essence of fallen demons empower the altar which you’ll find in every arena. Fill the altar sufficiently to complete the wave, then approach it to receive a Memory – a choice between three (to start with) power-ups. Combine these powers to achieve powerful synergies, rising beyond even the highest peaks of power you held in the campaign.
This is where Metal: Hellsinger sings to a new tune. Having to choose between powers, combining them into synergies, and having a different mix each run, is an inherently roguelite mechanism, and we were surprised at just how good it feels in our game.
For example, perhaps you want to become the ultimate bleed demon, in which case you can combine powerups that give improved bleed damage and duration with those that let you apply bleed in new ways (like with headshots or specific weapons, or both). Add the Memory that makes bleeding enemies take more headshot damage, and you have a bloody good time on your hands.
In practice, however, you often have to adapt to the choices you’re given. But sometimes, the stars do align.
Dreams of Death
As demons fall before you, they drop Void Echoes. At the end of your run, you can spend them to unlock a wide variety of permanent upgrades, from more health, to weapon specializations, to faster generation of your ultimate ability.
Sigils are a category of Dreams where you have the most choice from the start, that allows you to cover your potential weaknesses. If you have trouble timing those perfect reloads, pick up Ghost Rounds to make the first two to eight shots (depending on rank) after switching weapons consume no ammo.
Each time you shoot an enemy on the beat, your Fury grows, which directly affects how intense the music is and how much damage you do. Fury caps out at x16, which is where you will hear one of the many legendary vocalists in their full glory. If that sounds like a good time, the Unyielding Fury Sigil is for you. With it, you can never drop below 4x Fury, and you enter Leviathan already at 16x Fury, music blasting on all cylinders right out of the gate.
A particularly interesting Dream unlock is the Extra Memory, which does exactly what it says on the tin. With four Memories to choose from between each wave, your choices and ability to synergize are increased even further.
The Secret Spice
This free update has been a long time in the making. We knew we didn’t want to radically change the core gameplay. Slaying on the beat to absolute banger tracks is the soul of the game, and we know it resonates with players. Yet we wanted to offer something new.
To us, the roguelite progression framework and the pure flow-inducing rhythm gunplay is an epic meeting of genres. When in doubt, look to music: thrash metal, death metal, prog metal, power metal – and we’re still only in the realms of metal! Variety is the spice of life, especially in Hell, and we hope you enjoy it.
Riding shotgun with The Horde Mode Update, our Purgatory DLC is also available now, adding even more content, with a new weapon, three outfits, and three new original tracks performed by Melissa Bonny (Ad Infinitum), Joe Bad (Fit for an Autopsy), and Matt Heafy (Trivium).
Go forth, Hellsingers, and make Hell fear the beat.

When it comes to best builds, it is our strong suggestion that the best build to play in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the one that will best represent your personality as you get immersed in the world of Faerun and the adventures that await. We hope you feel confident looking for something that really speaks to you, and rest assured that the game will do its best to support your choices. However, with so many incredibly fun options available, we thought we’d lay out a few starting options for those that may be overwhelmed by choice.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, we made some adjustments to the rules to make sure that the choice of fantasy race and your character’s background is primarily driven by role-play. The starting ability bonuses have been uncoupled from the choice of race and any character can fulfill the roleplaying goals of any of the available backgrounds. Racial features are nice perks that can be broadly attractive to most character builds – a Barbarian Halfling will feel different to play than a Barbarian Half-Orc, but both choices are equally viable to face the fights and tough choices ahead. Try to think about which character you will enjoy role-playing as you explore the world, navigate tense conversations, enjoy hard-won victories, and maybe even pursue a romantic interest!
Best Build for players that are new to Baldur’s Gate 3 and D&D
If you’re only just dipping your toes into this whole CRPG trend, you can’t go wrong with a Barbarian. Simply pick the Barbarian class and go with default suggestions. Your biggest choice in Character Creation is which bod is going to look especially impressive on you as you’re slamming into some fiends under the fiery skies of Avernus.
As a Barbarian, you can expect to solve a lot of problems with (capital R) Rage. If you see a problem, simply get angry and whale at it until you don’t see a problem anymore. In dialogues, you’ll get unique choices to solve problems with – you guessed it – unleashing some raw unbridled fury.
This goes double for Berserker, a subclass we recommend you to choose at Level 3 (or about 2 hours into the game). Berserkers upgrade their Rage into Frenzy, which lets you attack and throw objects and characters an extra time per turn. The other subclass choices you can go for are the Wildheart, if the idea of animalistic powers sounds good to you (or if you are a huge fan of facial piercings), and Wild Magic, if you think there can never be too much chaos in a combat.
In terms of magic items, look out for the biggest two-handed weapon you can loot or buy. Keep in mind that Barbarians get bonuses for not wearing proper armor, so magic cloth equipment with properties that enhance melee combat is especially good on them.
Best Build for Magic Casters
If you are looking for something more refined and magical than the crude approach of the Barbarian, getting into spellcasting might be for you.
A great starter spellcaster is the Warlock, who is packing some serious firepower, but whose spells and rules are more a tad more manageable than the sprawling spellbook of a Wizard.
For most of the game, Warlocks get only two big spells to cast at a time until needing to rest, but their bread-and-butter free spells called Cantrips more than make up for it. For example, Warlocks have access to a classic Cantrip called Eldritch Blast, which is the closest thing to a sniper rifle you’ll find in Baldur’s Gate 3. Then, at crucial points in the fight, you can drop those two big spells for devastating effects. As you progress in levels, your Cantrips will grow in power, and you will gain more spells to choose from.
Warlocks also focus on Charisma in their spellcasting, which makes them a good pick for the “face” of the party – the character that gets to talk to everyone.
Subclasses of the Warlock are tied to the powerful patron that provides Warlock’s powers. For your first playthrough, we recommend sticking with the Fiend patron that gives you some extra temporary hit points for extra tankiness in combat, among other things.
And important choice for Warlocks comes at Level 3, when they pick a Pact, which can be thought of an extra specialization. We recommend going with the Pact of the Chain to get a unique pet Familiar, which is good for scouting, distracting your enemies and is just kind of adorable in an evil sort of way.
Best Build for Crime
Who is better at crime than a literal Thief? Start out as a Rogue and pick Thief subclass at Level 3 to get that sweet lifetime five finger discount.
Rogues have great bonuses for any crime-related activity whether it is sneaking, lockpicking, pickpocketing or straight-face lying your way out of going to prison. In combat, they are especially good at surprising the enemy by attacking out of stealth and deploying hit-and-run tactics. Thief subclass also provides a second Bonus Action that can be spent on throwing grenades, using consumables and executing follow-up attacks.
When browsing through trader’s back pockets, look out for magical weapons with Finesse property which are the only weapons that work with Rogue’s Sneak Attack feature. Dress in light armor to avoid disadvantage on stealth rolls and build up a stock of consumables for your line of work – invisibility potions, potions of speed, potions of gaseous form.
Best Build For A Chill Time
Not all problems need to be resolved with violence. In fact, you’ll find ample opportunity to talk, lie, bluff and improvise your way out of trouble.
Bard is the best class for this approach. Bards can do a bit of everything – spellcasting, fighting with weapons, healing and supporting your allies, talking on behalf of the party – but they don’t particularly sweat any of those things. Besides being useful all around, Bards also carry a musical instrument that you can use to enjoy music and even make a few coins.
Don’t forget to grab the Speak with Animals spell in Character Creation so that you can chat with every squirrel and ox, because that is the Bard way. Also do use the Vicious Mockery at every possible chance to utterly humiliate your enemies before defeating them.
For the subclass choice at Level 3, we recommend going with College of Lore on your first playthrough. This subclass lets the Bard lean further into supporting spellcaster role and eventually give the Bard an extra spell they can learn from the spell list of other classes.
Best Build If You Want to Bonk
Whether you are interested in the bonking of enemies with weapons, or perhaps wooing and bonking some characters you’ve met on your journey, the crowned champion of bonk is the Paladin. Not only are they fearsome in battle, smiting enemies with massive radiant damage, their focus on Charisma also makes it easy for them to sway hearts and minds.
This awesome power comes with a catch, however – Paladins take their oaths very seriously and quite literally. You need to pick an Oath in Character Creation, which acts as the subclass. You can be bonking evil as a punishment for their wrongdoing (Oath of Vengeance), or for the protection of the innocents (Oath of Devotion), or just, like, for the trees, man (Oath of the Ancients). Read the description of your oath carefully and follow it to the letter, lest you become an Oathbreaker. Be warned, that inaction can also lead to your breaking your oath, like if you let evil folks get off scot-free.
Itemizing a Paladin is very straightforward – find yourself the heaviest armor you can carry and the biggest bonking sword you can lay your hands on. Look out for magic items that help you deal even more radiant damage, as that comes in very handy when you are fighting the undead.
Best Build For A Lone Wolf
Combat and trap challenges in Baldur’s Gate 3 are meant to be tackled with a whole party of companions that can give you a hand or resurrect you when things go inevitably south. Lone Wolf playthroughs are running the risk of getting terminally snagged by a single wrong move. Seriously, don’t try it on your first run!
But if you are really determined to make a solo run, or simply can’t stand it when random needy vagabonds mope around your camp and stink it up with their moody attitudes, there is a build for you.
It is hard to get around the need for some companionship, so why not get a pet? Specifically, start out as a Ranger, then pick Beast Master subclass at Level 3. That will provide you with a permanent beast companion who will grow in power with levels, can take a punch for you or scout ahead in dangerous areas. And most importantly your beast companion doesn’t have any judgmental opinions about your conduct due to their unwavering loyalty. (Does having a literal pet wolf disqualify you from being a Lone Wolf? Who even makes the rules? Certainly not people within the biting radius of your wolf!)
When sifting through loot piles, that are definitely too big for one character because they were designed for a party of four, look for items that improve your tankiness and give you bonuses to Saving Throws in Intelligence, Wisdom and Dexterity – protection defense against common kinds of crowd control. Stick to ranged weapons and keep enemies as far away from your loneliness as possible. Dabbling in alchemy to get some extra oomph out of your only character is also a good idea.
Oh yeah, and definitely pick the Dark Urge origin in Character Creation. It’ll all make sense.
My Favorite Build Ever
I have a new personal favorite build ever every week!
My current fancy for the early game is the Storm Sorcery subclass of the Sorcerer class. Not only is Sorcerer a fun spellcaster on their own, thanks to their flexible Metamagic feature that lets you tinker with your spells, but you can also enjoy a limited Fly action from the get-go.
Access to flying really turns around the early game, opening new shortcuts and angles of attack in combat arenas. It also lets you reach all of the secret loot stashes and chests, generously peppered around Faerun, presumably by the chest fairies. I’m still finding new ones after working on this game for six years!
Besides a breezy early game, character with Storm Sorcery can be combined with Tempest Cleric through Multiclassing to get some nice synergies. Top it all off with magic items that improve and encourage the use of lightning and thunder and you’ve got yourself an electrifyingly broken build.
A Build That’s Better Than It Sounds
A surprisingly good alternative to following a build, is using the Randomize button a few times, until you find a character that surprises and intrigues you, and just setting off as them. It will give you a good sense of the full gamut of characters that Baldur’s Gate 3 has to offer and push you to try new things and perhaps find out things about yourself!
Baldur’s Gate 3 also has a flexible difficulty selection that can be changed at any time, and players will get an opportunity to redo their class and features choices early in the game, so if your first pick doesn’t resonate, don’t worry – there will be an opportunity to reroll until you find that perfect build. Good luck out there!
At The Game Awards 2023, The First Descendant revealed a Summer 2024 launch through a new cinematic trailer with the appearance of a new character. The First Descendant’s recent Crossplay Open Beta started on September 19 and lasted a week. The test supported cross-platform play, including the Xbox Series, and was available to players from all global regions. Nearly 2 million players from over 200 countries participated in the test, with the most interest and participation from players in North America. We were pleasantly surprised by how engaged Xbox players were, with a 5:5 split in participation between consoles and PCs.
Along with the launch reveal, we’re releasing an infographic to showcase data from The First Descendant’s Crossplay Open Beta. Through the active participation of numerous players, we’ve seen several gameplay-related findings, including that players chose Viessa the most out of the three starting characters, and Bunny was the most researched character next to the three default starting characters. As if our players knew the story behind the weapon, Hero’s scar was the most used weapon before the Open Beta ended. The Hero’s Scar is a small legacy left by the predecessors of the Descendants, and it represents the hope of humanity. Holding onto that hope, our players teleported nearly 50 million times to save Ingris, and they displayed their love for The First Descendant not only through their participation in the test but also through the most popular emote, Send Heart.
As mentioned, numerous players participated in the Open Beta, and we received a lot of feedback concerning it. We’ve heard some incredibly encouraging comments, like how much they enjoyed the game and how much it’s improved since the last Steam Beta, and we’re very grateful. But just as importantly, we received a lot of feedback on how we can improve The First Descendant, making the Crossplay Open Beta an invaluable time for the team. The tremendous excitement and response to the test made us eager to perfect the game further. Based on our players’ feedback, our developers decided to provide a host of top-requested enhancements, including broader mission variety, more content in the fields, a more user-friendly experience and interface, and even further optimized graphics, which is why we decided to launch in Summer 2024.
We’ve enjoyed meeting many players during the Crossplay Open Beta. Even though the game isn’t available for gameplay now, many of our players are supportive and engaged in our official community and other channels. We’ll continue to improve The First Descendant together as a response to the support. Thus, leading up to the launch and beyond, we’ll continue to communicate transparently and listen to our players’ feedback, and we’ll continue to share our progress with our players.

Hello, readers! I’m Luc Baghadoust, Executive Producer of Don’t Nod Montréal’s newly announced narrative adventure game, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage. I’m here to talk a bit about the game, our studio, and the teams involved in bringing this new story to life. We are thrilled to finally reveal at tonight’s The Game Awards what we’ve been working on and are so proud of: a new game and a new series!
Lost Records: Bloom & Rage began after Michel Koch (Creative Director) and I worked on Life is Strange 1 and 2, when we got the opportunity to kickstart a new adventure for Don’t Nod: forming a new studio in Montréal. Expanding overseas had been a discussion for a while and with strong support from Don’t Nod Paris, we made the leap. Michel and I both already loved North America, and the industry is vibrant here, with so many exciting studios and talents.
A global pandemic was not something that we anticipated, obviously, and it was a challenge to set everything up. Luckily, Don’t Nod adopted a remote work policy company-wide, which enabled us to collaborate remotely. Creating a new team was a fascinating experience. Along with Don’t Nod Montréal’s Managing Director, Frédérique Fourny-Jennings, we are shaping the studio’s vision and its projects. We were lucky to be able to bring Don’t Nod’s uniqueness and values to the Montréal scene.
We brought with us key people who had been working on previous Life is Strange games such as Baptiste Moisan, our Lead Designer, and Juliette Devillers, our Lead Character Artist, amongst others. We’ve also been able to attract fantastic talent to the Montréal Studio, a lot of whom had been impacted by those games and wanted to help us tell our new story. So a big thank you to the team in Montréal and each new talent that has joined us and helped make all the pieces click together.
Jean-Luc Cano, who wrote the scripts for Life is Strange 1 and 2, and his team of amazing writers collaborated closely with Michel in developing the story and characters of Reunion. We firmly believe that the best characters deliver the best stories, and we think you’ll all love Swann, Nora, Autumn, and Kat: four high school friends that form bonds over the course of a once-in-a-lifetime summer. Fate sees them reunite 27 years later after promising to never speak again. It’s a reflective tale with friendship, emotion, mystery, and magical surrealism.
Now about Lost Records! Bloom & Rage is the first game in the Lost Records universe. We obviously wanted to continue creating narrative adventure games with a strong focus on characters that resonate with people. Bloom & Rage shares a lot of DNA with our previous games, but also innovates in some areas too. Making a universe and having the stories within it interconnect with each other is something we’ve been dreaming of. The possibilities are endless and the stories we can tell within this universe are huge. Don’t Nod Montréal is hard at work making sure we bring these ideas and games to life!
Lost Records: Bloom & Rage is scheduled for release in late 2024 but if you want to keep up with news and updates, follow Lost Records on X, Instagram, and TikTok. There’s definitely more to come that we can’t wait to show you.

Safer Seas will open up in the latest Sea of Thieves content update, available December 7 and free for all players with Xbox Game Pass and across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11, and Steam.
For the first time, players can choose to sail the Sea of Thieves alone or in a crew of chosen friends, without the possibility of PvP encounters.
This update arrives as the third of three major content updates that make up the ongoing Sea of Thieves Season Ten.
After two months of back-to-back content updates, Sea of Thieves completes the trio promised back at the start of Season Ten by introducing a brand new game mode for players to explore: Safer Seas! Allowing exploration and adventure on a single-crew server, either alone or with a crew of chosen friends, this update opens the door to an entirely new way of playing the game.
A Peaceful Voyage
In Safer Seas, players can elect to sail solo or with a crew of up to three friends, with no other player-controlled crews present in the world. For fresh-faced pirates just starting their journey, this means a chance to learn the ropes without having to keep an eye out for hostile rivals, and an opportunity to understand the world and its key mechanics before diving into the traditional mayhem of the main Sea of Thieves game mode, now known as High Seas.
There’s no shortage of content in Safer Seas for players old or new to tackle. As in High Seas, a wide range of Voyages can be undertaken for the various Trading Companies, while World Events are frequently encountered, from fending off a Megalodon attack to striking down fearsome Ashen Lords. The ability to unlock the corresponding Commendations for these activities will also be present in Safer Seas.
For story-hungry pirates, Safer Seas still gives access to all the game’s narrative-driven Tall Tales, including the crossover experiences that make up 2023’s Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island and 2021’s Pirates of the Caribbean-themed Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life. In the absence of enemy crews, you’ll now be able to immerse yourself in all this lore at your leisure, without the risk of being interrupted by anyone who thinks you might have valuable loot tucked away.
Reduced Risk, Reduced Reward
While Safer Seas presents players with a wealth of content to explore at their own pace, there are of course some aspects of the game incompatible with a strictly single-crew experience. As a result, Safer Seas has a slightly reduced range of activities in comparison to High Seas.
For instance, content built around player vs. player interactions has no place in Safer Seas by design, such as Faction battles using the Hourglass of Fate or the competitive Skull of Siren Song Voyage. Similarly, The Reaper’s Bones Trading Company will not be accessible there due to its focus on player combat.
There are also some limits placed on progression within Safer Seas to account for the reduced risk in the absence of other players. Gold and reputation rewards will be accrued at 30% of that awarded in High Seas, and Trading Company reputation levels are capped at 40. This means that players will not be able to obtain the coveted title of Pirate Legend without venturing onto High Seas and, correspondingly, Safer Seas isn’t the place to engage with the Pirate Legend-focused Trading Company, Athena’s Fortune.
These limitations have been put in place to maintain a balance between Safer and High Seas, and to encourage players to try out both modes to see which suits their play style and needs. Even with these in place, however, Safer Seas presents a world alive with opportunities, whether it’s diving into Sea of Thieves lore through the Tall Tales, spending an undisturbed evening working on your fishing skills, or getting to grips with the game’s combat mechanics by taking on veritable hordes of skeletons. After all, Safer Seas isn’t entirely without risk – with or without roving pirate crews, the Sea of Thieves is a perilous place!
Fashion for All
One thing remaining consistent across Safer and High Seas is pirate style. The Outpost shops and Pirate Emporium are accessible in either mode, and Ancient Coin earnings won’t be subject to the 30% cap on gold and reputation. Seasonal Renown can also be earned at the same rate across both High Seas and Safer Seas, so your progress towards the active Season’s cosmetic and currency rewards (and the rewards themselves) will be consistent no matter how you choose to play.
If you’ve picked up the Season Ten Plunder Pass, you’ll still be able to work towards unlocking the Stormfish Chaser ship set and clothing alongside all the usual gold, Doubloons and Ancient Coins available through the 100 levels of Renown on offer during this Season.
Over in the Pirate Emporium, a range of time-limited seasonal goodies make a comeback this month, including the Festival of Giving weapons and pet outfits. The Bonechiller Costume is also back for the holidays, and this time it’s bringing with it an entire ship collection and bundle of weapons to fill out that frightfully festive look. Combined with the Ransacking Emote, you shouldn’t have any problem getting into the holiday spirit…
A Jam-Packed Season
Of course, Safer Seas is far from the only content to explore in Season Ten. December’s monthly update is the third to arrive this Season, following the introduction of Guilds in October and the Skull of Siren Song Voyage in November.
With Guilds, players can team up with fellow sailors beyond the usual limit of a four-person crew. By forming or joining a Guild, pirates can contribute to its shared Guild Reputation and unlock exclusive rewards for all Guild Members as they progress. And, for those of a less collaborative persuasion, the Skull of Siren Song Voyage sees the notorious Captain Briggsy summon pirates from across the waves into a competitive race to claim an ancient and powerful artefact.
All these new updates have been accompanied by a host of improvements and fixes to various areas of Sea of Thieves, to ensure that you’re able to have the experience you want out on the waves. With Safer Seas, that personalized experience is more accessible than ever, and we can’t wait to see you out there!

We are so excited to see our game, Have A Nice Death, release on Xbox. For the anecdote, everything originated from a little sketch of Death scribbled by the Creative Director, Nicolas Leger, in the corner of a page during an Unruly Heroes meeting (our first game). This sparked a conversation about what it would be like if Death were in charge of the underworld and worked in a traditional office setting. With everything that’s been going on in the world, Death would probably be pretty busy processing paperwork for incoming souls and in desperate need of a vacation.
“I thought it had great visual potential: simple proportions, clean silhouette, an obvious and iconic weapon, and this concept of a shapeshifting cloak immediately gave me ideas for movement and combat,” Leger says. “It was just one or two months later that I made the next step with a staged gameplay video during my free time.”
And this is how it all started. Now, let’s dive deep into what might interest you: The gameplay of Have a Nice Death!
Have a Nice Death is a fast, action-packed hack and slash roguelike in procedural environments where you play as Death, and must go across unique departments (levels) to defeat the Sorrows (the bosses) until you reach your goal: The final elevator that lets you have a much-needed vacation. Acquiring and choosing the tools in your arsenal for this adventure is of the utmost importance! First, choose the kind of scythe you want at the beginning of each run as they all provide a different move set and gameplay. During your adventure, you will also find other weapons including fireballs, maces, and bows. We have short range, long range, easy-to-use, and hard-to-master weapons, totaling over 70 weapons for you to play and mix to fit your playstyle.
Have a Nice Death has many unique twists compared to some other roguelikes. The progression system in our game l gives you the opportunity to gain new abilities and upgrades, however, there’s a chance they might also give a boost to your enemies! We call these upgrades “curses” and to gain them, you will have to fight our menagerie of Sorrows & Thanagers (mini bosses)!
Try to think about the combination of these upgrades together as they are the key to completing the game and you will need to pick them according to the weapons in your arsenal. If you use a multi-hit weapon, we would suggest a green curse that spawns a deadly butterfly per hit you do. Did I say green one? That’s because Have a Nice Death’s curses are split into 3 branches (blue, red, green) on a random skill tree. They are ranked in accordance with the main pillars of Death, Inc.’s business philosophy: Red for Daring, Green for Excellence, and Blue for Innovation. Red curses focus on damage-based buffs, green curses focus on enhancing your ability to use spells, and blue curses focus on utility or defense-based buffs. Curses play an important role on how you want your character build to be like (e.g., have a more weapon-focused or a spell- focused build), so make sure to take curses that fit the build you’d like to have!
Another twist is the Anima system, the healing system in the game. As you explore Death, Inc., you’ll come across Blue Anima, which does heal you but it only heals your injuries! So you’ll need to be on the lookout for ways to completely heal Death, such as finding and using Koffee or the very rare Golden Anima. Dodging every attack or killing stuff quickly works, too!
One of the goals for Have a Nice Death was to have a good mix of improvisation and foresight. We wanted the player to both be surprised by each run in order to give the feeling of what we call the “golden run,” but still be able to have agency and try to influence the run to feel the satisfaction of being overpowered. This occurs by offering the player many choices while switching up gameplay as to not encourage “save-scumming,” for example.
While Have a Nice Death is roguelike and we know you will die (I mean, “burn out”), you don’t have to be afraid of the difficulty. We have thought about everything. You will always find some gold to spend in your very own lobby with Joe to unlock new weapons or food to consume. He’s even nice enough to offer you a ridiculous discount if you have completed some objectives for him. For those who want an easier or a more challenging playthrough across Death, Inc., there are 15 difficulty levels to choose from, as we know roguelike players enjoy a nice challenge as they hack’n’slash away!
Have a Nice Death is available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One now.

To celebrate the game’s availability, we’re also launching the free Update 2.1, featuring brand-new features like the much-requested Radioport, a functional metro system, hangouts with partners in V’s apartment, and much more. Later in the month, we’ve got a treat for every Night Citizen — a full game booklet containing developer interviews, insights into the game’s creation, and a healthy dose of inspiration straight from the people who created the game.
Before the full booklet comes out, we’ve got an exclusive excerpt to share with you, featuring ten things you’ll definitely want to try your hand at, whether you’re a brand-new merc or an Afterlife legend. Let’s dive in!
Shoot some street photography
Every district here has its own flavor and feel, so what’s one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the local vibes? Photography! Take in the sights and see life through the lens of an NC native by taking preem shots across every district. That’s right, time to enter full-on Photo Mode. If you wanna admire the sights but don’t wanna cross paths with scavs, cyberpsychos, or bored street gangoons, use those handy new sightseeing binos and enjoy the city’s vista points from a safe distance.
Travel on the NCART
Who said getting around has to be a chore? Travel in NC is surprisingly efficient, and we say the NCART sky metro is one of the coolest (and safest) ways to get from A-B. Tickets are pretty cheap, so consider taking a smooth ride on public transit before going bumper to bumper with gonk city drivers.
Ride the rollercoaster in Pacifica
Pacifica was supposed to be a booming vacay resort, the perfect place to chill and indulge in all the pleasures the oh-so-wonderful megacorp bottom line could muster. Obviously, it all went to hell, but you can still find some moments of joy amidst the ruins. The broken down roller coaster seems primed for a jumpstart, so if you’re up for a thrillride and willing to put the work in, you might just be able to capture a moment of what this forgotten district should have been in the first place.
Discover preem arcade classics
Back in the day, kids and kid-like adults would burn eddies and hours breaking their fingers to get high scores in the local arcades. It’s a bust business now, what with BDs and the like, but we’ve recently discovered some absolute classics — playable if you find an arcade machine in working order. Roach Race and Trauma Drama — ahhh, now they take me back.
Explore Dogtown
Okay, yes you’d have to be desperate to even try to break into Dogtown — and we don’t usually encourage our readers to risk their lives getting into what most people call the ‘deadliest district’ of Night City — but if you’re dead set on seeing all there is to see in Night City, it might be worth it. Who knows, with a little patience, an opportunity to get through those impenetrable walls in Pacifica might even present itself to you. Crazier things have happened! Anyway, from what we hear, you can bag some sweet deals in that black market… just try not to piss off Hansen and Barghest while you’re at it.
Join the gig economy
Corps might rule Night City but we also have a thriving business of badass entrepreneurs. Mercs, edgerunners, cyberpunks — they go by many names, but the best thing about them is there’s always work to be done. Fixers are always in need of individuals with special skills, so if you wanna try your hand then keep an eye out for lucrative gigs. Eddies and street cred await!
Help fight crime
Gangers think they run this town. Sure, it’s hard to argue when they’ve got a gun in your face with their finger on the trigger, but it’s high time someone put these gonks in their place. The NCPD is understaffed and… well, let’s just leave it at that — so if you’ve got the gear to lend a hand and chip away at the daily crime statistics, you’re bound to be well rewarded. Stay tuned for NCPD alerts across the city; there’s always a crime in progress.
Change your entire self!
Y’know what they say: Night City Changes Every Body. Whether you’re bored of your looks or you just wanna try something new, head to any ripperdoc and they’ll be able to sculpt your appearance however you wish. And hey, while you’re at it, why not get chipped with some chrome? Can you really say you’ve been to Night City if you haven’t refreshed your implants?
Indulge in some romance
Got a special someone you just love spending time with? First, good for you! Who knew you could find love amidst the chaos of Night City, huh? Sometimes a quiet moment with your soulmate is all you need to recharge and feel content, and believe me that’s a rare thing in this screwed up world we live in. So go on, give that lucky person a call on the holo and forget about everything else for a bit. Date night ftw! Or, you know, if you’re not currently seeing someone, you can always go visit Jig Jig Street for some late-night fun…
Settle down
Can’t stop digging Night City? Try out life in different districts by checking out the apartment rental market! EZEstates on the Net has you covered, whether you’re yearning for the high-life in Corpo Plaza or the gritty feel of Japantown. And what the hell, while you’re in the shopping mood check out the Autofixer site to claim some sweet wheels of your own. A house and a car: ain’t that the life?
Feeling inspired? Jump into Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition and try out the full list! The game and the free Update 2.1 are out now Xbox Series X|S — so see you in Night City.

Take on the role of retired botanist Arabella Greene as she searches her estate for clues to help restore these long-forgotten flora to their former glory.
Blossom with Clues
Botany Manor, at its core, is a puzzle-adventure game with a narrative strewn about the manor to provide you insight into the lives, careers, and challenges women scientists faced during the 19th century through the lens of Arabella.
Each seed requires a unique set of circumstances to help it bloom, as these rare flowers, fungi, and assorted flora hail from extraordinary environments, such as flowers that only reveal their splendor during lightning storms and blooms that flourish in fiery-hot volcanic landscapes. With more to discover, it is up to you to determine how to create the perfect environment for each one to thrive.
As you explore the manor, you will find clues through notes, books, posters, and other items scattered around Arabella’s manor. Some interactable items will allow you to turn and flip them to help in their search to solve each gardening puzzle. Along the way, you’ll be able to keep track of your newly collected clues in your very own herbarium!
Nature is Everywhere
It wouldn’t be Botany Manor without the presence of beautiful plant life. Pairing perfectly with Arabella’s lifetime of memorabilia and a calming soundtrack, the manor fully immerses you in a cozy world of nature and serenity. There’s no rush to solve the gardening puzzles, so sit back, smell the roses, and take in everything Botany Manor has to offer!

We hope you enjoy this preview of Balloon Studio’s stunning debut title, Botany Manor, coming to Xbox X|S, available on day one with Xbox Game Pass in Spring 2024.
Unveil the true power of the Cretaceous period with four new species
See how these fascinating dinosaurs are brought to life in-game
Out Now on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One
Introduce four ferocious new predators to your parks with Jurassic World Evolution 2: Cretaceous Predator Pack! This latest update brings four extraordinary species to the game that are sure to stop your parks guests in their tracks. Manage and control these striking dinosaurs as they fight for dominance in your parks and search for their next meal.
Bringing these fascinating dinosaurs to Jurassic World Evolution 2 requires a lot of work from our talented team, and in this post, we’re going to show you how each species is brought to life, from start to finish.
Gigantoraptor
Let’s start with the Gigantoraptor, the hero from our Key Art and my favourite from the update. This is the largest known Oviraptorosaur from the Late Cretaceous era and features a stunning coat of feathers and large elongated legs.
Before we can start modelling any of the species, the art team creates a concept for the design approach to the dinosaur. To kick things off we’ll produce some initial concepts on the shape of the species, paying special attention to any standout elements. In this case we focus on the Gigantoraptors legs, height, neck, feathers, and head. This is used as a starting point for the design and a foundation to make sure we get the important features nailed down early on. You can also see in this step that we have a few variations on how the feathers might look, something we continue to experiment with in the next step.
After step one, we put together some additional concepts to explore other options. As you can see below, we are adding in some extra parts to the Gigantoraptors design such as more feathers on the head, thinner wings, and some extra pattern variations on the body. Once this crucial step is complete, the team then has a selection of concepts to pick from and build the final design.
Next, we take a closer look at the head of the Gigantoraptor. The team will design a variety of head shapes, using bones, eye positions, beak layout, and feather formation to produce a mix of options. Once we’ve settled on an approach to the head, the Gigantoraptors shape is locked in, and we can then move onto the final stage of the design process.
Bringing the best elements from each step we build the final concept of the Gigantoraptor. In this reference below you can see one of the colour variations for the species. Our approach to colour is just as important as the previous steps. The team will use information we have about the species and combine that with real-world references of other animals and their colour patterns. This helps us form a realistic approach to the colour and patterns of these stunning species.
Concavenator
The next dinosaur we’ll look at is the Concavenator and although we’ll take a similar step by step approach to its design, each species has different challenges and characteristics that we need to focus on.
The Concavenator has a unique silhouette, so in these early stages of the design we wanted to focus heavily on its shape to make sure we faithfully represent the species. It’s also important that the dinosaurs we design fit within the Jurassic World franchise. The Concavenator appears in the background of Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom as a statue in Lockwood Manor, so we used this as one of our many references when designing the model. Finally, in these early stages we’ll also include some initial measurements in our concepts, this helps as a guide for the team to see how this particular dinosaur will stack up against other in-game items, dinosaurs, and environments.
Once we have the overall shape locked in, we’ll then start to add some additional details to the dinosaur. A notable feature on the Concavenator is the two narrow humps on its back, formed by extremely large vertebrae. Sometimes when we’re designing a dinosaur that has such a distinct shape, we’ll have an additional step in the design process to explore ways of approaching this. In this case we had two different designs for the back, design A features the humps being significantly taller and B has the same design but shorter.
Finally, we bring it all together! Real-world fossils of the Concavenator feature structures that resemble quill knobs, so you’ll see in this final step we’ve added some to the design. This agile predator is a great addition to the game, and I can’t wait to see how players introduce them to their parks.
Utahraptor
Our third fierce predator in this pack is the Utahraptor. This is one of the largest known dromaeosaurs, so we had a lot of references on how to approach this design. In this first and second stage of the concept you’ll see that we’ve included some early examples to show how it would look when moving. This gives the team an opportunity to explore how the tail, neck and overall body stance would change with movement. We also included detailed concepts of the Utahraptor’s face, looking at the scales on its nose and how the feathers form. These detailed designs are integral to the team so we can create highly detailed models later on.
Towards the end of the design process, we will have a final highly detailed drawing of the Utahraptor, bringing in all the key elements of the species into one concept. This will act as the base plate moving forward for the colour and pattern variations.
Lastly, we’ll bring it all together with a final pattern design that players can then enjoy in-game and customise in their parks. Our main inspiration for this species were birds of prey and how their feathers and colours influencer their look and fierceness.
Tarbosaurus
Our last addition with this pack is the Tarbosaurus. This design is heavily inspired by the Universal Pictures, Amblin Entertainment and DreamWorks Animation Netflix Show, Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous: Hidden Adventure. We worked closely with our fantastic partners at Universal to create an accurate model of this species so fans of both the game and the show can enjoy this dinosaur in their parks.
With the shape and approach to the model complete we spent some time looking at colour and pattern variations for the Tarbosaurus, focusing on a couple favourite designs with multiple variations and then a few distinctly different alternatives. This gargantuan hunter looks fantastic in-game and will be a great fit for any large tyrannosaurine sections of players parks.
The team have done a brilliant job at bringing these exciting species to life in-game and we’re thrilled that players can now get their hands on them! Jurassic World Evolution 2: Cretaceous Predator Pack is available today on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

Hi buddies! Welcome to Born of Bread, a home-cooked turn-based role-playing adventure full of fun characters and charming stories for children and adults alike. Beings from another age are causing havoc across the land and their mischief comes as a great threat for everyone. The unlikeliest hero, Loaf, a golem born of bread who possesses a never-ending childlike wonder, finds himself and his newfound friends in the middle of a drama that’s thousands of years in the making. Adventure awaits!
Today we’d like to give folks a gander at Born of Bread’s unique take on turn-based combat. You play as the doughy golem Loaf, a being made of flour by the culinary crackerjack Papa Baker. Just as bread is tasty on its own but requires other ingredients to make a sandwich, Loaf needs companions to really get cooking. It’s up to you to build up a party of allies in Loaf’s quest to stop the unruly invaders wreaking havoc about town.
His friends include Lint the racoon, a neurotic aspiring writer with a penchant for digging and the ability to attack with his tail and manuscripts; Yagi, a talented goat martial artist who can materialize ethereal platforms by mediating, and land flaming strikes on enemies; and Chloe, a young aspiring detective with a lantern that can burn obstacles, and who can use her deduction skills to inflict status ailments.
Battles are largely tactical, though you’ll need precise timing to really get the most out of your attacks. For basic moves, like walloping a foe with a ladle or tail, you’ll need to hit a button the moment a needle crosses the green part of a meter to deal extra damage. More powerful blows, like using the dreaded Druidic Sickle, require you to rock the joystick as quickly as possible to fill up a meter for maximum damage. These cost Will Points, however, so use them wisely. For rare emergencies you can deploy Special Attacks using rare Resolve Points. For example, Loaf’s Roast special will prevent him from taking any damage at all. Simply hold A to heat up – but be careful not to overheat. Nobody likes burnt toast after all!
Just as important as a good offense is a strong defense, and you can mitigate damage by pressing A the moment an enemy makes contact with you. Quick reflexes are also crucial to kicking off combat encounters, as a good smack to an enemy during the game’s exploration phase will ensure that you get to take the first turn in battle.
As important as timing is, it will take wits as well as reflexes to come out victorious. Every enemy has its own strengths and weaknesses. In the early parts of a battle you’ll want to use your Type Sight boon to display enemy weaknesses and resistances. Husky Hornets are weak to normal attack types, like your ladle or a pickaxe, while Spidusts will be weak to leaf attack types, like Lint’s tail ability, but they resist slashing attacks like Loaf’s druidic sickle. You’ll have to manage your maneuvers carefully to efficiently obliterate your opponents before they crush you into crumbs!
Of course you’ll want to prepare for a rumble even during peaceful times, so make sure you’re managing your Hit Points, Will Points, and Resolve Points during your breaks between fisticuffs. Feed your party with apples, chocolate cakes or croissants (don’t think too hard about the fact that Loaf is eating baked pastries) to replenish your points, and defeat foes to level up for permanent upgrades.
That should be enough to get you started on your journey. You won’t have to wait long to see what further adventures Loaf and his buddies have in store, as Born of Bread emerges from the oven onto Xbox platforms on December 5. Bon appetit!

Their journey will take them across treacherous mountainous terrain, through deadly deserts, and of course, to the front lines of the battle to reclaim the city of Dawn.
In the trenches of Dawn, Nor is ready for battle.
With combat being at the core of Flintlock, we have been hard at work refining the feel, skills, and various builds that will be at your disposal. Nor is a versatile and deadly Sapper, equally as adept with an axe as she is with flintlock weapons. Seamlessly weave axe and pistol shots as you go up against hordes of undead coming from the Great Below.
As a versatile Sapper, Nor is handy with an axe.
Tap into the magic of the Gods with Enki and become the ultimate God Killer. Utilise Enki Curses to amplify your damage and unleash satisfyingly brutal glory kills. You’ll also gain access to Witherings, powerful ultimate attacks that can change the tide of combat. Deal massive damage, heal yourself from the brink of death, and even gain access to other Gods attacks, Witherings can be found throughout the land and will allow you to customise your playstyle even further.
Emerging from magical triangle rifts, Enki can be used as a disruptor in battle to help with crowd control.
Speaking of playstyles, Flintlock has plenty to offer for all. Use the skill tree to master the way of Powder, Magic, or Steel. Powder increases proficiency in flintlock weapons, allowing you to become a ranged arsenal. Restrain enemies and gain access to new Enki abilities through the Magic tree. Become a master of close quarters combat through the Steel tree, where you can use momentum to attack faster and faster.
All of this comes together with Flintlock’s mobility. Powder Mobility gives an unparalleled level of freedom throughout the world, whether it be finding long lost secrets, or gaining the advantage against your foes. Open rifts throughout the world and combine with Enki to take flight, jump ever higher, or throw yourself forwards to reach previously unavailable ledges.
Nor’s powder jump grants her with unrivalled mobility.
We’re excited to show you more of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, coming in Summer of 2024. Keep an eye out, there’ll be a lot more to show in the coming months.
Ahh, the great outdoors! Take a deep breath of that fresh air, feel the sun’s warmth on your skin, and hear those ominous noises calling from the jungle…uh oh.
Better get that survival pack ready. Our team here at publisher Gameforge, alongside the phenomenally talented indie development studio Nordic Trolls, are preparing to take you on an expedition filled with action, adventure – and maybe an impossibly large crab or two – in Under a Rock, a brand new open world survival title.
Picture it: in the early 19th Century, you embark on a daring journey at the behest of the Society of Explorers to investigate the disappearance of a previous expedition when, suddenly, forces beyond your control send your hot air balloon careening on a crash course to disaster.
You survive, but find yourself stranded in a world lost to history, a hidden land that few can travel to… or from. Host to all manner of primitive, hostile flora and fauna, you’ll need to keep your wits about you as you set about getting your bearings, crafting your base, and doing whatever it takes to survive.
Your world won’t be the same as anyone else’s – every new game will procedurally generate a new land and, using the power of Unreal Engine 5, we’re building a vibrant, gorgeous game that gives you a sense of true exploration and discovery every time. You’ll want to build a character to match, and our diverse character creator will help you piece together the perfect adventurer.
You don’t have to go it alone, though! If multiplayer survival crafting is more your style, Under a Rock will support up to 10 players per server – meaning nine of your closest friends get to be stranded with you! As the saying goes: “the more the merrier”!
And, of course, what’s a mysterious land lost to time without a terrifying evil plaguing it? Part of your escape will hinge on uncovering the secrets behind the supernatural forces at play, piecing together the curse that hangs over the world, and researching how to break it. If you happen to discover treasure, artifacts, and native wildlife to bring back along the way, well…you’ve earned it.
Excited yet? This doesn’t even scratch the surface of what Under a Rock has in store! Along with gathering supplies and crafting a base, survivors will learn the joys of farming, fishing, and animal husbandry. Will you construct a serene fishing hut along the sandy shoreline? Or is harvesting crops from bountiful plants collected from the varied environment more your speed? Or maybe your passion lies in taming, breeding, and befriending a wide range of cute but (potentially) lethal critters? No matter what tickles your fancy, Under a Rock will spark your sense of adventure.
So, would-be intrepid explorers, be sure to keep an eye out for Under a Rock when it lands on Windows PC and Xbox consoles in future.
