Balatro Wants You to Play Poker – and Then Break It Apart

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

I’ve built decks where a simple pair is more powerful than a straight flush. I’ve built decks that mean straights no longer work the way they should, and allow me to create wild combos more frequently. I’ve built decks where I’ve experimented and discovered that there are valid poker hands here that don’t even exist in the real-life game – five of a kind, anyone?

I’ve discovered a new way to play Balatro on every single run I’ve played, quite literally –and I’ve played a lot. This isn’t a game about working within the rules to succeed, it’s about changing the rules to help you redefine what success is. I’ve already hit point scores I didn’t necessarily think were possible when I started playing – and, looking in the unlocks menu, I’ve realised that there are point scores that still feel baffling this far into my time with the game.

Speaking of unlocks, this is where Balatro offers you a meaningful sense of progression. Every new run is a total reset – you can’t keep abilities or receive passive upgrades, but hitting (often very specific) targets will unlock new cards for you to use in future runs. I’m now looking through menus between each run, working out what bizarre goal I want to hit next – a run where I somehow have 30 club cards in my deck? Let’s give it a try.

Perhaps my biggest reservation going into Balatro is that there was no story to anchor this all to – I’ve loved roguelike deckbuilders’ many approaches to slowly but surely offering up a narrative through what amount to simple games of cards. But I’ve come to realise that part of the beauty here is that this game swaps story for atmosphere.

  • Fool Them Twice in My Hero Ultra Rumble: Villain Twice Joins The Roster

Fool Them Twice in My Hero Ultra Rumble: Villain Twice Joins The Roster

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

A New Villain will be joining My Hero Ultra Rumble from February 21, 2024.

A bit high-strung and not overly coherent in word and deed, but he’s a villain who loves his friends – Twice joins the rumble!

My Hero Ultra Rumble has many characters with visuals and Quirks that are faithful to the original manga. Twice is one of them, and players can experience the same skill as shown in the original, including the iconic skill that create alter egos with the Quirk “Twice”.

We’re thrilled to bring this popular character to this battle royale. Here to tell you more is our game producer, Aoba Miyazaki, who has put together some tips and insights on the Twice character development so you can maximize, and dare we say, duplicate your best efforts with his Quirk!

    Skill Introduction

Defeat your opponent, get their measurements, and create clones of yourself or your enemies with your Quirk when you choose Twice.

The charm of Twice in the original story has been incorporated into his techniques as a playable character,” says Miyazaki. “He has a tricky special action that lets him duplicate the enemy, and we hope you will use it to cause mischief and add a new element of excitement to your battles.”

“We put a lot of effort into keeping his voice and visuals to be authentic and just as appealing as the original, and we hope you will connect with him in game!”

    Quirk Skill – Dagger Shot

Feature: Long-range attack utilizing multiple thrown knives. Strike your opponent in a burst of blades.

Tips: As you will be throwing multiple knives, it is possible to limit the opponent’s movement by aiming for hit stops with multiple hits.

While the Quirk Skill is hitting, and the opponent’s movement is slowing down, work together with your allies to inflict massive damage.

    Quirk Skill – Self Duplicate

Feature: Create a clone of yourself. Clones disappear after approaching and attacking an opponent.

Tips: When fighting in an area with many objects, use them to hide yourself or get out of sight of your opponent, and aggressively use the Quirk Skill to confuse your opponent by attacking in such a way that they cannot tell whether you are the main body or an alter ego.

    Quirk Skill – Foot Boost

Feature: Move in the direction of your extended measuring tape and use knife to attack. It can be used as a means of transportation, as it can travel to the tip of the tape measure.

Tips: Since it can also be used to move vertically, this Quirk Skill can be used while looking up to move on top of buildings in the new U.A. Island stage, which has many buildings. The Quirk Skill can be used for both surprise attacks and evacuation, allowing the user to move freely around the stage.

    Special Action – Mud Imitation

Feature: Deals the final blow to a downed opponent and creates a clone of them. The clone will remain active until they are defeated or the opponent is revived.

Tips: The HP of the alter ego created by a Special Action is based on the character’s HP. Currently, there is no upper limit to the number of alter egos that can be created by a Special Action, so Twice players can actively aim to create alter egos of characters with high HP and overwhelm the battlefield.

PUR Costume for Twice – Paper Bag Disguise

This costume is from the original anime, and it is faithfully reproduced down to the handles of the paper bag.

The costume also comes in color variations original to the game. We hope players will have fun expressing themselves by unlocking color variations that suit their personal styles.

And there you have it! Confuse your opponents and overwhelm the battlefield with countless imitations of your fallen foes when Twice joins the fray on February 21.

    • Copychaser Games’ Creative Director shares how his past as a crime reporter shaped the game’s approach to journalism.
    • Times & Galaxy is coming to Xbox in mid-2024.

Ever wanted to experience the rush of breaking news? In Times & Galaxy, you’ll chase down scoops as the newest robo-intern of a trusted holopaper. Your assignments might initially seem less than glamorous, like intersolar cat shows and underground dirt fairs—you are an intern, after all. But what, and how, you report is up to you: by picking your way through branching conversations and exploring each level, you’ll discover hidden information, new sources and surprising quotes, allowing you to craft your story your way through the game’s unique Build-A-Story feature.

“Branching conversations are the bread and butter of a lot of larger Western RPGs, and they are, in many ways, what you do as a reporter doing an interview,” Copychaser Games Creative Director Ben Gelinas explains. “You have to decide what to ask, and how to ask it to get the information you need.”

Gelinas knows that from experience: before he began writing for games—with credits on Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mass Effect 3, and Control, among other titles—Gelinas was working as a crime reporter for a daily newspaper in Canada. Drawing on his past career offered new opportunities for well-established conversation systems.

10 Things to Get You Started in Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

    Summary

    • Purge the forces of chaos in brutal turn-based combat, available on Xbox February 20
    • Combat Nurgle’s sinister plot in an epic campaign penned by legendary Warhammer 40,000 and Black Library author Aaron Dembski-Bowden
    • Shape your own elite squad of Grey Knights; tailor their abilities, equipment and even their appearances as you clash with the daemonic

Chaos threatens humanity once again. Reports of a mysterious plague named ‘the Bloom’ emerge from the Tyrtaeus sector, and the arrival of an Imperial Inquisitor sets in motion a chain of events which will test your tactical prowess to its limits.

In Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters, you’ll take command of the Grey Knights, an elite chapter and secretive order of Space Marines, tasked with aiding the Inquisitor in the eradication of this foul corruption.

Force Commander, given the grave nature of this new threat, I have been authorised to distribute the following confidential military doctrine to assist your encounters with this plague. I hope that these Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters tips serve you well. For the Emperor!

    Turn-based tactics, Space Marines style

A single Grey Knight is an army unto itself, whether executing enemies at distance or purging them in melee combat. Your elite soldiers don’t miss their shots, offering you total precision when they open fire on the forces of Chaos. Repeatedly attacking foes will stun them, creating an opportunity to target specific body parts and reduce your foe’s effectiveness or even unleash a stunning execution to boost your entire squad with an extra action.

Take Down the Reapers of the Bloom

Force Commander, early reports indicate that the Grey Knights will take on towering, powerful boss enemies in the form of the Reapers of the Bloom, from Greater Daemons such as Aeger the Benevolent, to the hulking corroded Chaos Knight, Cruciatus the Generous. Each will require you to rethink your tactics in order to achieve victory. But an even graver threat awaits those who discover the Bloom: Mortarion, the Death Lord and Primarch of the Death Guard.

    Personalize the Grey Knights

As Force Commander, you can customise each battle-brother to your liking, tweaking crests, skin colour, hair colour, armour pieces and more. Grey Knights arrive trained as a particular class, starting with the Justicar, Interceptor, Apothecary and Purgator. An additional set of four advanced classes unlock throughout the campaign. As your Grey Knights gain experience, you will be able to further shape their training to suit your style on the battlefield, sharpening their skills until they become the ultimate weapon against the darkness.

    An Unpredictable Enemy

Across an expansive campaign, our prognosticars suggest you will face a wide variety of Nurgle’s threats such as Poxwalkers, Helbrutes, Plague Marines, and Myphitic Blight-haulers as you battle the Bloom. Enemies will mutate across combat missions depending on which strain of the Bloom is present, visually changing them and offering combat buffs such as additional armour.

    Psyker Power

Each Grey Knight has a reserve of Willpower, which is spent on psychic powers, and is primarily regained by slaying enemies on the battlefield. Psychic powers range from increasing the power of melee attacks to area of effect buffs for your Knights. Additionally, by supporting Inquisitor Vakir’s research into the Bloom, you’ll gain the ability to deploy powerful single-use psychic abilities called Stratagems which can turn the tide of an entire battle.

    Purging the Bloom

Between battles, you’ll preside over command of the Strike Cruiser, the Baleful Edict. From the helm, you’ll respond to the growing Bloom threat, monitoring its spread via the Star Map and deciding where to go next. But be warned, you will have to make tough choices in order to limit the Bloom’s spread. The longer you leave an outbreak unchecked, the more enemy resistance you can expect.

    The Changing Battlefield

Combat zones will change over time as the Bloom takes hold, offering new cover opportunities as well as new hazards. Players can also utilise the environment to their advantage, unleashing massive plasma battery explosions or collapsing pillars on foes. Players can set waypoints for their Grey Knights as they tactically move around each map, avoiding parts of the level where an enemy might be in overwatch stance, or where noxious corruption might otherwise damage them.

    Upgrades on the Baleful Edict

The Baleful Edict acts as your command centre, where you’ll find key areas in need of your attention. The Manufactorum lets players first repair and later upgrade their vessel, enhancing its response capabilities significantly. In the Armoury, Grand Master Vardan Kai offers equipment requisition to boost the war effort. Finally, in the Libris Malleus, Inquisitor Vakir will enhance the Grey Knights’ combat abilities and unlock tide-turning psychic abilities called Stratagems.

    Add to Your Arsenal

By showing its dedication to the chapter, your Strike Force is granted rewards over time such as additional Grey Knights, Master-crafted weapons, Armour and specialized Wargear. Completing optional combat mission challenges known as Glorious Deeds, which impose tougher limitations or objectives, will unlock additional requisition points to spend in the armoury.

    Beware the Warp

Warp Surges are unpredictable combat mission events that can call in new enemy reinforcements, activate powerful mutations, and introduce unpredictable effects and hazards onto the battlefield, upping the challenge. The more corrupt the map, the more likely a Warp Surge event will occur, but enemy actions and Grey Knight abilities can further influence Warp Surges as well.

I hope these insights provide a guide for your investigations Force Commander. You can start your battle against the Bloom right now on Xbox. Share your triumphs with your fellow Grey Knights on our social media channels and strike down this foul corruption!

  • Inside the Dazzling Design of 3D Platformer Penny’s Big Breakaway

Inside the Dazzling Design of 3D Platformer Penny’s Big Breakaway

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hello everybody! Hunter Bridges here. I am one of the co-founders of Evening Star, as well as both Game Director and Technical Director for Penny’s Big Breakaway.

Penny’s Big Breakaway is our team’s first 3D game, coming soon to Xbox Series X|S, and we built it using our in-house 3D engine, Star Engine. Building a 3D game engine from the ground up is hard work, but that’s okay with us. Evening Star’s philosophy is that, by blazing our own trails with technology, our creativity will be sparked in unique ways.

Today, I want to touch on our design motivations, how that informs the camera system as well as the control scheme, and the performance we were able to unlock with the Xbox Series X|S.

    Thro’ Yo’ Yo-Yo!

When we first started Evening Star, we were eager to create a fully 3D game. We wanted to come up with a game concept featuring our own characters and world, all powered by our proprietary Star Engine!

While investing time in our engine, we started generating concepts for 3D games. One person’s idea from one day would inspire someone else’s idea the next day. Our team kicked around a seed of an idea about using a yo-yo, which quickly took root.

With this concept, our game designer Esteban Fajardo drew up a series of sketches representing different “verbs” our character could perform.

We felt like we were onto something. Even in this basic form, the character and yo-yo were kinetic and exciting! Some of these actions even made it into the final game… “throw”, “sleep”, “ride” and “swing” were all present from this early stage.

The team also wanted to create a colorful cast of characters, and we wanted them to live in a fantastical environment. Combined with the Yo-Yo mechanics, this led to fluid action in a unique world.

Putting the Right “Spin” on it

Once we decided on our core concept, we attacked it from every angle. We asked ourselves: What do we like about our favorite 3D platformers? What are elements we struggle with? What are some fresh things we could bring to it?

Our team surfaced a common point of contention: the camera. In most 3D platformers, the player is often tasked with managing the camera. We’re adding new mechanics designed around yo-yo moves. We wanted the player to focus on controlling that, instead of constantly attending to the camera’s position and direction.

We decided to go with a “fixed” camera that the player doesn’t control. The player never has to think about the camera, but it will always show them what they need to see and where they need to go. This decision profoundly influenced our gameplay and level design.

    Bump if You Jump

Alongside the camera, we were exploring control schemes for movement and yo-yo actions. At this time, the character designs were taking shape too. We created Penny, and turned her regular yo-yo into her faithful companion… aptly named Yo-Yo!

A key design pillar was ‘expression’. We wanted to give the player maximum opportunity to move Penny and control Yo-Yo’s abilities, and reward their skill. The ideal is anyone can create their own “style” out of Penny’s strong core moveset.

Quick access to Penny’s Yo-Yo moves, in every direction, was essential to expressive movement. Assigning the right thumb stick was the clear answer.

Since the right stick became so crucial, we also wanted the player to play without ever needing to lift their thumb from it. This lent itself to a “bumper jumper” control scheme, where the jump action is mapped to the L or R bumpers.

We tried a control scheme with just analog sticks and bumpers. Immediately, we noticed the empty set of face buttons felt unnatural. We also felt that players might not adopt an unconventional control scheme. We met in the middle and assigned the face buttons more traditionally– A button to jump, X button to throw, and B button to ride.

The result is a control scheme that feels both familiar to newcomers but provides a level of movement control and flexibility that we believe is unique!

Penny Takes the Stage on Xbox

When talking about cameras and controls, responsiveness is the name of the game. It’s crucial that the player’s moves feel snappy and satisfying.

Xbox Series X|S can blast 120 frames per second! But that means our game has to run fast enough to keep up.

Thanks to the power of this Xbox Series X|S, Penny’s Big Breakaway can run at full resolution 120 Hz! On Series X, we support 4K (3840×2160), and on Series S we support 1440p (2560×1440). Plus, by using the new GameInput API, receiving input from the gamepad happens in tight sync with the high frame rate, minimizing player input lag.

    Take a bow, Penny!

When you take a new 3D platformer, give it an expressive control scheme, and run it at a buttery smooth 120 Hz, the result is a visceral action game experience like no other!

But don’t just take it from me– you’ll have to try Penny’s Big Breakaway for yourself. Penny and Yo-Yo make their debut on Xbox early this year!

  • No Man’s Sky Welcomes All Xbox Players for the Omega Expedition

No Man’s Sky Welcomes All Xbox Players for the Omega Expedition

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Over the years, we’ve seen many Xbox players on console, PC and Game Pass venture into No Man’s Sky’s universe and lose themselves in all there is to do, in some cases for hundreds of hours.

Today we’re announcing our latest No Man’s Sky expedition, Omega, and this time we’re inviting the entire Xbox community, whether they own the game or not, to try it out for themselves. The expedition runs for 2 weeks from today (Thursday, February 15) and is free to play for the first weekend until Monday, February 19.

    No Man's Sky Omega Screenshot

Whether it’s crafting, building, trading, fighting, exploring or a host of other activities to indulge in, there is so much to do in No Man’s Sky. That’s why we’ve custom-designed Omega to show new players in particular all that there is to see. It’s like a fast-track sight-seeing tour of the universe.

No Man’s Sky expeditions are a chance for the entire community to convene in one area of the universe and work together to complete challenges and unlock exclusive rewards, so space and planets always feel full and bustling with activity. Moreover, there are always experienced veteran Travellers around to offer friendly advice and support.

    No Man's Sky Omega Screenshot

Omega is our 12th Expedition and the rewards on offer are probably the biggest yet. The headline act is the Starborn Runner, an exclusive starship, destined to become as sought-after as the Golden Vector. A suite of unique customisations – a stylish Atlas helmet/jetpack/multi-tool staff combo – can be unlocked as souvenirs and taken back into your main save as future proof that you were there for Omega.

For new players who have yet to buy No Man’s Sky, any progress you make in the Expedition will be preserved in case you ever decide to take the plunge.

    No Man's Sky Omega Screenshot

We have also overhauled how Expeditions work, and now existing players can choose which of their favourite starships from their fleet they’re going to take with them on their adventure. Expeditions can now be accessed directly in the Anomaly in addition to the main menu screen.

As most Travellers know, a No Man’s Sky Expedition normally comes with a host of new additions and features and Omega is no exception. Ever since we challenged players to take on and defeat the ominous Pirate Dreadnought last year, we have noticed a real desire to add this huge vessel to their freighter fleet. Now, when you take down the Dreadnought, it’s yours to keep.

    No Man's Sky Omega Screenshot

Additionally, as you explore the universe, you will encounter alien races who will give you contextual missions specifically related to the planet where they live. Completing these tasks will earn you rewards and reputation with the locals.

We’re very excited to welcome a whole new cohort of players to the game and I know our vibrant and positive community will welcome them with open arms. Hang out in the Anomaly for long enough and you’re sure to encounter some generous Traveller who just wants to help you out.

    No Man's Sky Omega Screenshot

No Man’s Sky launched on Xbox in 2018 and came to Game Pass in 2020. Our Xbox community has grown immeasurably and our tiny team at Hello continue to enjoy serving up content like Omega. 2024 is looking to be our biggest year yet.

  • Skull and Bones is a Refreshing RPG Adventure with a Surprising Survival Twist

Skull and Bones is a Refreshing RPG Adventure with a Surprising Survival Twist

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Five minutes into the Skull and Bones open beta, I found myself deserted and alone on a small island with nothing but a rickety dhow and some rags to preserve my dignity. After a brisk chat with an unfriendly pirate, I was back out on the treacherous waters of the Indian Ocean, hunting for scraps and clues to locate a nearby town.

After landing on the secret shores of Pirate Den Sainte-Anne and introducing myself to its leader, John Scurlock, it was time to prove myself as a fearsome, scallywag of the seas. Fortunately, Skull and Bones set up a surprising myriad of avenues to do so; once you’re through its carefully crafted tutorial stages and introduced to the services that Sainte-Anne offers, Skull and Bones opens up and allows you to traverse the seas at your leisure, and peril.

Progression is based on Infamy, your Infamy will grow as you complete missions. How you do this is up to you – from missions in the main quests, side-quests from random encounters, or scooping up a task from the jobs board, be it taking down a specific target or quietly smuggling some commodities into a marked port.

The heart of Skull and Bones is its ship-on-ship combat – you’ll spend the majority of your time sailing the seas and they are not particularly friendly. Combat feels extremely satisfying, cannonballs and explosives land with conclusive thuds, and their rate of fire feels realistic without being sluggish. Skull and Bones‘ customization system allows you to kit out your ship to suit your playstyle, whether you want to be up close and dealing damage with the Bedar, or supporting your fleet with a hardy Hulk that can stand strong against incoming fire.

However, there’s a lot more to consider than indiscriminately sinking every boat you stumble upon. Nearby ships can be identified, you’ll be able to see how powerful they are, what faction they align with, perhaps most importantly, what cargo they’re carrying, allowing you to weigh up whether it’s really worth the trouble. In those moments, I am roleplaying a pirate, choosing who to respect and who to blast to smithereens based on what I need in that moment.

The variation of vessels goes one step further, which adds another welcome element of role-playing to your adventure. As your Infamy rises, you’ll gain access to bigger, better ships, each with different strengths. It’s not as simple as just buying a ship, though, you’ll need the silver to purchase it and the materials to build it. However, you’ll still need specific classes of ships to complete certain missions – for example, a dhow is required for hunting, which means it doesn’t become immediately irrelevant as soon as you get a more impressive vessel. Switching back to my little boat to spear some alligators felt like a realistic break from launching fire into the sides of massive Barges, making for a truly fluid pirate experience.

This is where Skull and Bones really intrigued me – there’s a visceral joy in getting onto your boat, sailing out and learning where to buy (or steal) materials needed for upgrades. As you explore, you’ll learn about trade routes and the materials they supply. If you want for example, a big pile of Cobalt or some Fine Linen, your best bet is to loiter around that route and attack ships that are carrying it. If you want to sell any excess goods, Skull and Bones has a trading system, where goods will be worth more to certain traders at different times.

It’s more than just looting whatever you can grab and then rushing to the nearest port – its crafted to make you think about the goods you’re taking and how you’re going to offload them. It’s worth noting that if your ship is destroyed, your loot will be left floating in the ocean for anyone to take, so making quick decisions is paramount.

There are other quality of life inclusions that takes the edge off some of the more laborious parts – you can quick travel from bigger ports and settlements, but it’ll cost a small amount of silver and time. Your crew will tire from speedy sailing and slow the boat down, but you can craft meals and buffs to keep them working longer.

Skull and Bones‘ early game feels promising – there’s plenty to do, and a motivating progression system that encourages exploration and upgrades. You can also have a pet cat with a peg leg, which is obviously the best thing in the world.

Skull and Bones sets sail on February 16, available on Xbox Series X|S.

Issues will introduce new questlines, rewards, events, weapons, gear, and treasures to hunt, all while driving the story to weird and wonderful new places.

In Issue #1: Renegades, the adventurers guild GRAIL sets its sights on an uncharted world called X-Isle. This verdant paradise was once home to a lost civilization whose temples, ruins, and treasures still cover it. GRAIL is particularly interested in the treasure part… but there’s a snag. A monstrous faction called the Disciples have also made their way to X-Isle in pursuit of this treasure, and they’re proving to be a bit of a thorn in GRAIL’s side. That’s where you come in!

Together with a vibrant cast of rogues and rapscallions, embark on quests as you battle Disciples and rival Renegades, undertake daring heists to reclaim ancient treasures, and safely extract your hard-earned loot. Your Renegade legend is about to be written, and it’ll only get wilder from here on out!

Explore the Mysterious World of X-Isle

    Hawked Screenshot

X-Isle is the kind of place you see on postcards. Gorgeous views. Tropical jungles. Beautiful beaches. Reptilian monsters. Well, maybe it’s not quite picture-perfect.

This newly discovered world is indeed beautiful, but it’s crawling with hostile enemies and dangerous locations. The good news is you’re equipped with exploration gear, standard issue courtesy of GRAIL. Your trusty Traverser is a multitool you can use to whack Disciples, ascend and descend cliffs, cross ravines, ride ziplines, or get out of a tough spot. If you want to make use of X-Isle’s plentiful waterways (and look cool in the process), your Hoverboard is the right tool for the job.

Discoveries await you on every adventure. As the story develops in limited-time events and Issues, the island will continue to grow and evolve, as will your relationship with GRAIL. Visit X-Isle often to see what’s new!

    Extract Artifacts

    Hawked Screenshot

You’ll find many treasures across your excursions, but you’re looking for the real deal: Artifacts. Complete encounters across X-Isle — such as puzzles, freeing helpful beasties from their prisons, and fighting off waves of Disciples — to obtain Glyphs. Once acquired, these mysterious symbols will grant you a temporary power-up for the duration of the match. Collecting five Glyphs will lead you to your prize.

Artifacts are locked safe and sound behind a Treasury Vault somewhere on X-Isle. Deadly traps and Disciple legions defend them, and the journey is treacherous, but it’s worth it. Solve the puzzle on the Treasury’s door to unlock it. Grab the Artifact and treasures within. Then get the hell out of there via Extraction Point — just stay frosty, as rival Renegades are itching to get their hands on your score.

Adapt Your Loadout for the Heist at Hand

    Hawked Screenshot

A fully loaded arsenal of weapons and superpowered abilities is at your disposal. Scavenge shotguns, assault rifles, pistols, SMGs, sniper rifles, grenades, and more from chests to stand a fighting chance as your heists heat up.

Turn the tide by adding Exo and Ward Gear to your Loadout, along with their super-powered attacks and abilities. Take the Infernat Lantern, for example — it can unleash a fiery swarm to hunt down and inflict burns on enemies. Backed against the wall? Deploy Gelatinum to put a jelly wall between you and your opponents to slow them and their projectiles right down. Add new Gear to your Loadout via the menu before every treasure hunt to experiment with new tricks.

Your looted Artifacts can also be incorporated into your Loadout to get game-changing new powers, be it a speed boost, reduced cooldowns, health regeneration, or other useful effects.

    Customize your Renegade

    Hawked Screenshot

Unlock a massive suite of customization options. Switch up your Renegade’s look with full-body Avatars, Outfits, new Color Schemes for your clothes, striking Weapon Skins, new wraps for your Gear, and lovely sets of decorations for your Quarters. You can also express yourself mid-hunt with Emotes!

One of the best ways to unlock new cosmetics is via the Renegade Pass. Its Free and Premium tracks are themed to each Issue, with the Renegade Pass #1 available to start at launch. Tackle quests to progress your Pass and unlock more than 60 exclusive rewards. Complete the blazing Aztec Spirit Avatar and its full collection of variants, earn the Reptile Slayer and Sky Captain Outfits, wield the Veteran’s Blade Exo Gear, and brandish the Jungle Gods Weapon Skin in Issue #1: Renegades! There’s even more to unlock, so level up and see how much loot you can score.

Ready to rock X-Isle to its core? Hawked will be available to play for free tomorrow, February 15 on Xbox Series X|S.

    HeroMasteryGauntlet.png

Bringing a Whole New Balance to Gameplay

Season 9: Champions also introduces global balance changes that affect every hero in the game. We’re adjusting how the damage dealt is more consistent by increasing the projectile size while also increasing the health pools of all heroes, thereby keeping the time it takes to eliminate targets relatively the same. We also added a new passive for all heroes to regenerate their health when they step out of combat.

If you haven’t already, read up on the full details of these changes in our previous blog or check out our patch notes.

    Justice Rains From Above

Season 9 also presents significant updates to Pharah, made with some strong goals in mind:

    • Empower Pharah to make more individual plays and lessen her reliance on heroes like Mercy.
    • Shift Pharah’s movement capabilities from feathering up in the sky toward more horizontal movement that can cover distance quickly.
    • Introduce brief moments of downtime for Pharah’s flight.

These goals are aimed at enabling Pharah to be more effective at higher ranked thresholds and as a solo hero, while also addressing rougher experiences players have going against Pharah – such as her presence limiting the effective hero pool of the opposing team.

    PharahUpdate.png

Pharah’s Hover Jets passive has been reworked to limit her time in the air, with fuel being recharged only while she is touching the ground. To compensate for this large change,  Pharah has more speed and acceleration while in the air, allowing her to traverse between areas quicker. Jump Jets also now provide bonus fuel (50% of the total tank) and that overflows if you hit 100% fuel. So, while there are moments of downtime introduced, Pharah players will have much more control of where they want to be on the battlefield during that time in air.

Pharah also has a new ability called Jet Dash. When Pharah uses Secondary Fire she will dash in the direction she’s moving. When combined with Concussive Blast and the enhanced mobility from Hover Jets, Pharah can quickly navigate herself into positions where she’s highly lethal.

This more active Pharah means a healthier game and offers new levels of skill expression. We’re looking forward to your feedback on these Pharah changes.

    Rolling into Junkertown

And finally, a big update for the wild and rowdy Junkertown map is coming this season. The first section of the map (the area by the first checkpoint) is quite open. It can be tough for the offensive team to push the cart through here if the defending team has a Widow or Pharah. So, we’ve replaced the small cover with a trusty, burned-out building. We’ve also replaced the outhouse that was close to the gate with a tall water tower to block the line of sight from the openings above the choke point. Additionally, a few more cars have been added to this area, and the cliffside path has been reduced.

    Junkertown.png

The small health pack on the balcony overlooking the hairpin turn on the second area has been removed to lessen the defender advantage from that choke. In the third area, we added a vertical support beam on the left side of the hallway to block the sightline from the upper ledge to give more cover for attackers to enter the area. We also widened and added cover to a hallway on the outer mid-section of area 3 to open up team fights that happen there. Finally, the updated map features a new night-time lighting theme to try out.

Overwatch 2 – Season 9: Champions begins tomorrow, so answer the call and challenge yourself on the Competitive ranks today.

  • Celebrating 10 Years of World of Tanks on Xbox

Celebrating 10 Years of World of Tanks on Xbox

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

World of Tanks is hitting the big ten! Since 2014, the game’s been part of the Xbox free-to-play scene, bringing you only the best tank battles on console. It’s safe to say that the game wouldn’t be where it is today if it wasn’t for its first release back in the Xbox 360 days.

Wargaming CEO, Victor Kislyi himself reflects on his time at the Microsoft E3 2013 Press Conference. “As I look back, it was incredible to be on stage 10 years ago during the 2013 Microsoft press conference announcing World of Tanks for Xbox.  Wargaming was thrilled to bring World of Tanks, the game that has been my life, to a platform with millions of players. We were the vanguard of F2P on console, providing a new way to both play and discover games. This was only possible with the support and belief of our trusted partner, Microsoft, with whom we have continuously achieved significant results. It has been an amazing decade for World of Tanks on Xbox and here is to many more!”

Since then, it was full speed ahead to keep Victor’s vision alive. And Director of Live Operations Valerie MacCracken will vouch that it was quite the ride. “At the time, there weren’t many free-to-play games on Xbox 360… It felt like unchartered territory.” The hard work would eventually pay off. “The game has evolved tremendously since its release, from having only three tank nations to now having a full tech tree across two game modes, a ton of new features, with more coming up this year!”

From the World War II theaters to the high-paced Cold War battlefields, we’ve traveled across history with a roster of tough-as-nails vehicles of all shapes, sizes, and nations.

As a thank-you for ten incredible years of tanking, get ready for a yearlong celebration unlike any other with monthly gifts, special events and sales, and the opportunity to earn two end-of-the-year tanks with the year-long Celebrations event.

American Tier X MBT-B Heavy Tank Image
The American Tier X MBT-B Heavy Tank.

Firstly, enjoy your first gift by logging in on February 13 and unlocking the American Tier X MBT-B Heavy Tank (plus its exclusive Raider Skin) for free, or in discounted bundles. Your discount is based on the number of years you’ve been playing the game.

Leading into our tenth anniversary festivities, our January 30 update brought important updates to the game, particularly to Cold War mode. We’re calibrating the Silver and XP research costs for your Cold War vehicles, so you grind less, collect faster, and enjoy your time on the battlefield even more.

The latest update also brought the new Azure Coast community map, a fresh batch of War Chests, and limited-time Chinese New Year-themed bundles to the game. It also marked the end of the Resolutions event. Commanders who participated in it (by completing seasons throughout 2023) and finished at least five seasons will find the one-of-a-kind T34 Calliope waiting for them in their garage. This unique vehicle is the only World War II tank with rockets, making it a real collector’s item exclusive to console. And if you’ve completed six seasons, you’re getting the tank plus a side of bonus rewards!

World of Tanks Year of the Dragon image

And now, let’s dive into the Year of the Dragon season details. As in previous seasons, you have 100 levels where themed rewards are ready to be earned. In this season, inspired by the Chinese zodiac for 2024, there are three reward paths to choose from. All tank commanders automatically start on the Free path, where you can earn rewards every few levels ranging from the reliable Type 59-II Premium tank, the season Medal, a 2D Dragon Commander, Gold, War Chests, and more! Then you have the Season Pass, where you receive rewards at every level (in addition to the Free rewards), more tanks, and the new WZ-1224 premium tank once you complete level 100.

And for your third option, the Ultimate Season Pass will immediately give you everything in the Season and Free pass, plus the new Highlander 116-F3 Premium tank for World War II mode, a themed 3D Hero Commander, and 25 completed levels.

It’s World of Tanks Modern Armor’s anniversary, but it’s you who’s getting the gifts. New affiliations for Cold War mode, a new World War II Tech Tree line, and specials for D-Day’s 80th anniversary, Tankfest, and Halloween are among some of the highlights for 2024.

    WZ-1224 tank image
The WZ-1224, unlocked by completing level 100 in the Year of the Dragon Season Pass.

Also, going back to Cold War and researching just for a bit, this February, you’ll be able to start a new Tech Tree line of German light tanks, from the Post-War Era (Era 1) all the way to the Détente Era (Era 3), and tank destroyers, from the Post-War Era (Era 1) to the Escalation Era (Era 2). If you’re new to the game, Cold War mode’s light tanks may look “light” at first, but they pack some serious firepower and are crucial for suppressing and ambushing the enemy thanks to their maneuverability. As for the tank destroyers, their name says it all.

There’s so much to look forward to with the release of Year of the Dragon and World of Tanks Modern Armor’s tenth anniversary’s yearlong celebrations.

Here’s to ten more epic years to come. Keep on tanking!

  • Whip it Good! Breaking Down Weapons Included in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Complete Edition

Whip it Good! Breaking Down Weapons Included in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Complete Edition

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

    Summary

    • Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Complete Edition is available on February 6 at 5pm PT
    • Complete Edition features all content from the three DLC packs and collaboration DLCs
    • Three game-changing weapons are available: Cestus, Whip, Long Sword

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty Complete Edition is available for download on February 6, transporting gamers into a dark Three Kingdoms world infested with demons. The Complete Edition comes packed with all of the new weapon types, divine beasts, bosses, story chapters, and end game content included in the three DLC packs plus the collaboration DLCs.

However, it’s the three new weapon types – cestus, long sword, and whip – that really flex the game’s muscles, offering distinct new ways to play the game as you fight for every last breath.

Here’s a breakdown of how to use each new weapon type…

    Cestus

Time to beat down demons with your bare hands! Aggressive attacks enable you to quickly combo punches and kicks while also preparing to deflect at any moment due to the speed of animations. Watch out, though, the lack of range can be a problem against certain enemies, so team cestus with Wizardry Spells like fireballs in order to have the best of both worlds.

While cestus is equipped, you can actually increase your Spirit by up to three levels, with each level granting certain positive effects:

    • Level 1: Increases attack damage dealt to enemies
    • Level 2: Reduces Martial Arts and Wizardry Spell Spirit consumption
    • Level 3: Decreases the damage taken from enemy attacks

To top it off, when you are fighting in High Spirits, using Martial Arts, Spirit attacks, or Fatal Strikes will actually grant you a positive effect that increases the amount of Spirit you obtain. When you perform a Spirit attack, the surplus Spirit from your current level will be consumed. You will also lose any Spirit gained from Level 3 if you switch to a weapon other than cestuses.

Master’s Tip: Learn to take advantage of the different levels of Spirit when fighting with cestus. Depending on the enemy, use the different positive effects during battle appropriately.

    Long Sword

The long sword is a great weapon thanks to its ability to charge before strikes. That’s right, using this extended blade enables you to actually charge and accumulate energy as you hold down either X or Y to perform normal attacks or Spirit Attacks. The longer you hold the button, the more powerful the charged attack will become, with each button unleashing two phases of strikes. With a longer accumulation period enabling a more powerful attack with different animations and sound cues to help clue you in to whether you’re using a phase 1 or phase 2 attack.

Building up power directly after Spirit attacks, Martial Arts, or successful deflects will shorten the time it takes to accumulate power. In fact, moving while accumulating energy will also allow you to quickly dodge in that direction. It is even possible to deflect enemy attacks at the beginning of the dodge sequence and doing so successfully will instantly boost your energy level to the maximum level. This enables you to launch a powerful counter attack while breaking the enemy’s stance.

Master’s Tip: Learn when to charge your sword with your Spirit attack (Y button) – even during a mid-combo string – so that you can either land a strong blow or move away mid charge to deflect and instantly charge your final attack.

    Whip

When first trying out the whip, just know, this weapon has the biggest risk/reward factor of any item in Wo Long. You’ll want to first build up your Spirit Meter as much as you can before taking on the deadlier demons, but once you’re ready to rumble, activate Frenzy mode by pressing Y while guarding. Here’s the reward, as your whip attacks in Frenzy mode, combine the whip with Martial Arts and Wizardry Spells to overwhelm opponents with a series of strikes. This combination of attacks makes the whip one of the best (and most fun) long-range weapons in the game to take out hordes of monsters.  You will even deal damage to surrounding enemies upon successfully deflecting an attack.

But here comes the risk. In Frenzy mode, your attacks will be more powerful, but you will not be able to recover Spirit, and each of your attacks will also consume Spirit. Additionally, Frenzy mode will be automatically deactivated when you are staggered, such as when you are inflicted with a status effect or Spirit Disruption, leaving you open to taking on huge damage, or possibly even leading to your demise.

Master’s Tip: When using Frenzy mode, as Spirit gets low, switch over to a different weapon using deflect counterattack (RB + B). This will smoothly transition you to your secondary weapon while also deflecting. And while this will take you out of Frenzy mode, since you are now using another weapon, it will also give you the opportunity to build up Spirit quickly again before switching back to the whip to once again find yourself in a Frenzy.

Think you have what it takes to defeat the demons of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Complete Edition? Download the game when it launches on February 6.

  •  Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden – Meet Lost Ghosts and Determine Their Fate in Haunting Cases

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden – Meet Lost Ghosts and Determine Their Fate in Haunting Cases

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hi everyone, we are Elise Galmard, Lead Narrative Designer, and Simon Svoboda, Lead Level Designer at Don’t Nod. We’re a part of the team bringing you Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, a supernatural tale of two lovers and ancient secrets.

In this supernatural Action-RPG, play as two ghost hunters and lovers who face impossible choices that harbor dramatic consequences for the living… and the dead.

From February 13, you’ll get the chance to sift through the shadows of the past in New Eden, but before then we’d love to give you a glimpse into the world. Today we’re talking all about haunting cases, a common form of quest you’ll encounter in Banishers.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUsU0HtsBRg?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

    Behind The Veil

Our game universe is set in the world of the 17th century as we know it, with one major difference: the world is plagued with curses and ghost hauntings.

During a Haunting Case, you will find ghosts that are still attached to the world of the living, which you as a Banisher, will be asked to investigate and solve. Haunting Cases serve as side quests in our game.

A ghost is the lingering spirit of a dead person, holding onto some of their memories and feelings. Bound to the Incarnate world (the world of the living) by unresolved emotion that takes the form of an item called the Soul-tie, a ghost is also attached to one or more living beings, forever linked and wandering until you set them free. You must discover the truth behind each lingering ghost and why they’re here.

With time, all ghosts will decay and turn into specters: entities reduced to their base primal emotion, and with no memory or personality. This dilution of their humanity – also called paling – can be resisted if they feed from the surrounding life force. Indeed, the only way for a ghost to sustain themselves in the Incarnate is to feed on the essence of the living to keep their hold and grow stronger. That is the main reason as to why Banishers dispatch the dead: to protect the life force of the living, and to keep ghosts from paling into terrible, forever hungry spirits.

In the game you’ll encounter characters with deep secrets and concealed truth. For instance, you’ll uncover the story of an anxious wife awaiting her husband’s return, only to later realize that she had taken his life to escape an abusive marriage. As Banishers, a crucial choice awaits. Wil you blame her, seeking retribution for murder? Or will you banish the soul of her departed, abusive and revengeful husband?

Reveal The Unsaid and Bring Closure

To bring Closure, a Banisher needs to investigate and gather Hints on all people and ghosts involved in the case to understand everyone’s Intent.

In the case’s final moments, the Banishers will be presented with a choice to solve the situation. Three different solutions are available: releasing, banishing, or blaming the people and spirit involved. Ascending the departed souls allow them to find peace, whereas banishing lead them to infinite torment in a realm where souls wander without finding any solace. Blaming on the other hand, is a darker path where that involves a sacrifice: taking the life of the living to feed Antea with their soul.

Each decision that you take during the game will have a consequence on the remaining settlers. Each choice will have an impact and lead to different outcomes, especially for Red and Antea.

In Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, you’ll fall into a powerful and intimate narrative. We have put a lot of ourselves in each of the stories and narrative branches. We can’t wait for you to discover the game on Xbox Series X|S on February 13!

  • Lightyear Frontier Is a Beautiful, Skewed Spin on the Mech and Farming Genres – and it Arrives on Game Pass in March

Lightyear Frontier Is a Beautiful, Skewed Spin on the Mech and Farming Genres – and it Arrives on Game Pass in March

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

    Summary

    • Lightyear Frontier is available in early access on March 19
    • Lightyear Frontier is being released for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and via Game Pass, with a demo available today
    • Find out how Frame Break twisted the farming and mech genres to build something brand new

Get ready to be the exofarmer you’ve always wanted to be, as Lightyear Frontier offers a wholesome adventure, either solo or with up to 3 friends online, when it touches down in Xbox Game Preview on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and with Game Pass on March 19!

Lightyear Frontier infuses an agricultural twist on mech-based gameplay – offering a new take on the farming sim genre –  allowing you to take on your wildest pastoral fantasies on a whole new world. Board your mech and embark away from your interstellar homestead, as you gather new materials, create a sustainable environment, and discover this new world’s ancient secrets. Here’s how we took two very different genres and combined them to create something unique.

Explore A Brave New World, In A Whole New Way

After landing on an alien planet, you’ll be left with nothing but your trusty mech and a gorgeous unknown world to explore. Starting from nothing, it won’t be long until you’re sawing down trees for wood, piercing boulders for rocks, and ploughing through your harvest to earn an abundance of resources to build your very own homestead and make the place your own.

With a whole new twist on the farming genre, Lightyear Frontier puts you in the pilot seat of your very own mech. Use combat-focused tools in a violence-free way, such as a chainsaw and machine gun loaded with seeds, as instead of fighting the wildlife, you’ll use your arsenal to gather resources, shoot seeds into the ground, water crops, and clean up the environment, making it habitable for you and your friends.

Harvest new plants and turn them into materials for buildings or upgrades for your very own mech, bolstering its base capabilities and giving you new tools in the process. You can even personalise your mech’s visual style in any way you see fit, without sacrificing any of your enhancements, ensuring the world and mech you create remain your own.

Be The Pilot You’ve Always Wanted To Be

The idea of Lightyear Frontier is to take the formula established in games such as Stardew Valley and offer players something entirely new. In the early days of development, it was clear a departure from the genre was needed, whilst still maintaining the cosy farming feeling that similar games embody. Our team at Frame Break tinkered around with the idea of using robotic characters in a previous project, and it soon became apparent that this was the hook needed.

Taking inspiration from classic sci-fi movies such as Aliens, and games such as Starcraft 1 & 2, a running theme of mech suits became apparent, spawning the idea of becoming an exofarmer on an unknown world. Watching and experiencing these classic sci-fi stories showcased the satisfying nature of mechs performing everyday activities, which translated perfectly into what we wanted Lightyear Frontier to be.

Whether you are cutting down trees or knocking down rocks to secure more resources, the feeling of piloting one of those mechs means players get the excitement previously seen in genre-defining works such as Aliens, without the stress of tackling deadly monsters, and instead embracing the fulfilling cosy farming duties that the game invites players to try.

    Become One With Your Mech

A big emphasis in Lightyear Frontier is the encouragement to take your hulking mech suit into new pastures. You won’t just be harvesting and maintaining your farmstead, as there’s a wide, open frontier to explore from the comfort of your pilot seat. With your trusty mech, venture out into the great unknown, uncovering new mysteries and secrets around every corner.

As you delve deeper into the wild, you’ll find the mech becomes an extension of yourself, with a romanticism seen in the movement, as it makes players feel both powerful and bulky with every hill climbed and valley conquered. The controls have been expertly designed to ensure the weight of the suit is felt but with the ability to still be able to scour the land with ease, living up to our ambition of creating a farming power fantasy.

It took extensive trial and error to ensure newcomers and mech gameplay veterans, from titles such as Titanfall and Armored Core, felt at ease when it came to piloting the mech suit. Over the years, lessons were learnt in crafting an experience that married players from all genres and skill levels, meaning the controls feel natural both on-foot and in your mech. The end result is an adventure that delivers an approach to the farming genre never seen before and brings that child-like fantasy of piloting your very own mech suit to life.

Get A Glimpse Of What Lightyear Frontier Has To Offer Today!

As much as everyone loves reading about the mech suit and what it offers in Lightyear Frontier, we understand the community is eager to get their hands on with the game. With this in mind, we are also excited to announce that a free single-player demo for Lightyear Frontier is available today, alongside the option to pre-order the game!

Begin your adventure in the stars and pilot the mech of your dreams across a beautiful new planet, filled with wondrous sights, sounds, and secrets to uncover. We hope you enjoy this small slice of Lightyear Frontier and join us for the Early Access launch when it lands on March 19!

2024’s Games Lineup Is Going to Be Incredible for Xbox Players – Here’s Why

    Reading Time: 11 minutes

2024 is going to be a great year for Xbox players. Across Xbox consoles, PC, Cloud, and Game Pass, you’ll find a truly special line-up on the way. With new ideas, long-awaited sequels, incredible exclusives, and more all on the way, no matter what kind of game you’re looking for, you’ll find it on Xbox.

To try and cram it all into a single article would be impossible, but we’ve arranged a choice selection of just some of the upcoming games into categories, to give you a sense of what’s coming this year to Xbox and PC.

As with all of Obsidian’s games, it’s going to be a journey to remember – this fantasy action RPG is built around the studio’s mantra of playing “your worlds, your way,” including opportunities to approach story and combat in multiple ways, as you ultimately uncover a mystery that affects not only you and your party, but the fate of the Living Lands themselves. Explore Enormous Open Worlds

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTcvtSfDkCM?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

There’s a reason open worlds are among gaming’s most popular places – the scope they offer for freedom, discovery, and self-expression are unmatched by most. Thankfully, there are some very big hitters coming in 2024. Star Wars Outlaws is the first-ever open world Star Wars game, set between the events of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Fight, steal, and outwit crime syndicates as you join the galaxy’s most wanted. Final Fantasy XIV Online arrives on Xbox for the first time this year, welcoming you into its huge, beautiful MMO world, and inviting you to explore every inch with your friends.

2024 also sees the long-awaited return of two cult classic franchises with wide open worlds. Dragon’s Dogma 2 brings us another eldritch blast of Capcom’s unique action-RPG, mixing high fantasy with some truly outlandish combat – once you’ve taken down a cyclops with a meteor, you’ll know why people loved the first game quite so much. STALKER 2 (coming on day one to Game Pass) will reintroduce us to The Zone after many years away, asking you to explore a mutating world by way of intense, painstaking survival action.

    Strategize on an Epic Scale

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1I815PCKeE?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

If turn-based role playing fans thought they were eating good last year, with celebrated entries such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Sea of Stars, it’s time to loosen that belt another notch; a feast of massive adventures is on the menu in 2024. Following November’s more action-focused Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, RGG Studio shifts focus back to turn-based battle in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, out now. This one’s as epic as it is wacky, with a full island-building game embedded as an optional diversion from Ichiban’s adventures in Hawaii – the first game in the series set outside of Japan.  This week, Atlus revisits one of the most beloved RPGs of all time with Persona 3 Reload (coming on day one to Game Pass), complete with overhauled visuals, new music and voice performances, and modernized gameplay features.

Vaunted developer Vanillaware is known for its visually distinct RPGs, and it’s bringing its first-ever title to Xbox in March, the stunning tactical RPG Unicorn Overlord. The much-anticipated Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes (coming on day one to Game Pass) promises an immersive JRPG experience with a focus on rich storytelling. Players can look forward to intricate town-upgrading mechanics and engaging combat, exploring a world brimming with diverse characters and compelling narratives. Finally, one of the most striking titles at last year’s Xbox Games Showcase, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a new fantasy RPG from some of the creative minds behind the Persona series.

    Prepare for More Fearful Encounters

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLWQDX5pbDM?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Horror is one of the most captivating genres in gaming. Designed to thrill while pulling you into a world of terror, these types of games have a way of staying with you even after the lights have come back on. 2024 might be upping this a notch with one of the masters of modern gaming horror, The Chinese Room, bringing us into their newest universe with Still Wakes the Deep (coming on day one to Game Pass). You’ll be stranded on a warping North Sea oil rig being seemingly consumed by a supernatural entity. Sounds fun; sign us up.

Some of these fearful encounters in 2024 will be returns to the familiar. Supermassive Games is taking the reins from Tarsier Studios with Little Nightmares III, bringing their horror pedigree to this beloved puzzle-platform horror adventure series. We’ll also be taking a return trip into Red Barrels’ excellent survival horror series with The Outlast Trials. One of the newest features there will be the opportunity to play with friends within the walls of a corporate-controlled sanitorium.

Speaking of returns, we’ll also be treated to a long-awaited arrival of a new Alone in the Dark, now with a reimagined take on a horror gaming classic starring David Harbour and Jodie Comer as playable protagonists.

    Traverse New Worlds

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7-3NsH82HA?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of gaming is finding a brand new series, and a brand new world, to explore, shape, and fall in love with. 2024 is going to offer many, many opportunities to do that, with multiple games marking the start of brand new journeys for players. From Xbox, Towerborne and Ara: History Untold are the beginning of brand-new series, but our partners are also bringing a bevy of new ideas to the table.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn weaves together brutal melee, gunplay, and magic for a fantasy narrative that looks strikingly original. Meanwhile, Dungeons of Hinterberg (coming to Game Pass on day one) will take us to a fantastical version of the Alps, The Plucky Squire will jump between 2D and 3D in its storybook world, and 33 Immortals (coming to Game Pass on day one) turns the action-roguelike template into a never-before-seen 33-player co-op experience.

    Dive Into a Simulation

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx8pehx8xvc?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Sometimes, the only thing better than getting lost in a new world is sculpting that world yourself – “simulator” can mean many things in gaming these days, and 2024 brings ample opportunity to sculpt an empire, or create peaceful hangouts along with friends.

In Manor Lords (coming on day one to PC Game Pass), dynamic, medieval settings meet real history in a fresh take on city-building and real time strategy. For a quieter adventure, take your mech for a stroll through the cozy cosmic hills of Lightyear Frontier (coming day one to Xbox Game Pass), an open-world farming adventure that can be explored alone or with friends.

And of course, as we mentioned above, Flight Simulator 2024 takes flight this year, so be sure to keep your eyes to the virtual skies (and Xbox Wire) for updates.

    Relive The Adventure

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGrYKr2MTMs?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Returning to a story you know and love can be the ultimate joy, and 2024 is packed with shiny new spins on some classic titles. Explore the depths in Tomb Raider I – III Remastered, which includes the first three games in the classic series complete with upgraded graphics. Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster also promises a triumphant return to a classic tale of good vs. evil, complete with stunning new visuals that’ll entice old and new Star Wars fans alike. Plus, you can relive an Xbox indie gem with Braid: Anniversary Edition, a lovingly updated version of the time-bending platformer, complete with charming new graphics, improved sound, and developer commentary.

    Jump Into Long-Awaited Returns

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWLNS0xq1yE?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Many of the stories and worlds that we already love are making big comebacks this year. Tekken 8 – out now – is on top form, with cutting edge combat, stunning visuals and a bombastic new story – it’s the perfect instalment for new and returning fighting fans to jump into.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 by The Chinese Room takes players to the dark underbelly of Seattle, where vampires struggle for survival and supremacy. As an Elder vampire, players meet compelling characters, navigate complex political relationships, stalk the streets for prey, and engage in intense combat to uncover the city’s secrets. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 launches later this year, ending our 13-year wait to step back into the boots of Captain Titus as he hacks, slashes and boltguns through hordes of vicious Tyranids in a glorious sequel.

A fresh entry into the enchanting Mana series – and its first appearance on Xbox consoles – is also on the way. As we discovered during Developer_Direct, Visions of Mana promises a beautiful reimagining of the series’ vibrant worlds, breathtaking environments and heartwarming characters, all within an epic RPG.

Immerse Yourself in Unexpected Art Styles

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAx5NN0u5b4?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

First impressions are everything, and this year is bringing some games that will open your eyes as much as they expand your mind. In a true, ‘I never thought I’d see that in a game’ moment, Harold Halibut (coming to Game Pass on day one) is a handmade adventure built with traditional stop-motion techniques – imagine a playable Wes Anderson movie set on a submerged spaceship and you’re on the right track.

Rise of the Golden Idol is a sequel to the beloved (and truly bizarre) detective game Case of the Golden Idol, and brings with it a style that somehow fuses the painterly and the grotesque while evoking classic ’90s point ’n’ clicks. Open Roads (coming to Game Pass on day one) on the other hand blends a 3D world with beautiful, graphic novel-style characters to striking effect, helping to tell the story of a mother and daughter embarking on a road trip and uncovering long-lost family secrets.

Enjoy More From the Worlds You Love

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yn6LlZSphpA?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Of course, a game doesn’t stop growing when it’s released, and many of your favorites will continue to get new content throughout 2024. From the Xbox family, you can expect Starfield’s DLC expansion, Shattered Space, later this year – not to mention new seasons and updates for the likes of Sea of Thieves, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Call of Duty: Warzone, Diablo IV, Halo Infinite, Overwatch 2, The Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 76, Grounded, Minecraft, and more. That’s not to mention our games on other platforms, such as World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Call of Duty: Mobile.

From our partners, you can of course expect Fortnite to continue to grow in truly unexpected ways, Destiny 2 will receive its epochal The Final Shape expansion, and Apex Legends will celebrate its fifth anniversary. That’s not to mention the likes of Grand Theft Auto Online, the EA Sports catalogue, Rainbow Six Siege, and many, many more.

    Keep Discovering With Game Pass

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rUEWRG8hp8?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

With all of these new games on the way, don’t forget that Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass already contain hundreds of titles for you to try out – your new favorite game might already be waiting for you. Encompassing console, PC, and cloud (with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate), Game Pass offers new games, new genres, and new ideas, wherever you want to play.

2023 saw some incredible games join the service, and 2024 will be no different. We’ve already started strong with the likes of Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Resident Evil 2, and many more joining Game Pass in January, and the year ahead is looking very good – Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Persona 3 Reload, Manor Lords are just a few of the titles on their way. Make sure to check back with Xbox Wire to find out what’s coming, and when.

For those yet to become a Pal Tamer themselves, Palworld is an online open world game that sees players dropped into a mysterious land and given the ability to capture over 100 Pals, monsters with a range of abilities – both in battle, and in surviving in a hostile world. Battling, crafting, building are all a part of the experience, and it’s proven a huge draw for players across the world.

Palworld is available in the Xbox Game Preview program, meaning there’s much more to come as Pocketpair refine the experience ahead of a full 1.0 release. Developers are listening to player feedback, and have started applying their learnings to the game already – and they know cross-play is one of the largest requests from fans, and are working quickly to address it.

On Xbox’s part, we’re working with Pocketpair to help provide support for Xbox versions of the game. We’re providing support to enable dedicated servers, offering engineering resources to help with GPU and memory optimization, speeding up the process to make Palworld updates available for players, and working with the team to optimize the title for our platform.

Palworld is available now for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC through the Game Preview program. It’s available for Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass members, and can be played through Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership.

  • Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake – How We Remade a Masterpiece

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake – How We Remade a Masterpiece

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Released in 2013, and directed by the singular Josef Fares, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons was a truly unique game. After their father falls ill, the game follows two, well, brothers as they set out into a strange and often dangerous world – with the twist being that a single player controls both characters simultaneously. They must cross dangerous lands, face deadly foes and rely on each other more than they ever have before to find a cure, leading players through a beautiful world by way of action-packed puzzles and obstacles.

Almost a decade after the original game’s release, nothing has quite replicated this game’s mixture of unique controls and emotive storytelling. So, with our remake, we’ve concentrated on not just how to bring a modern classic back to life, but to preserve and enhance this incredible, one-off experience.

    Remaking a Masterpiece

Our philosophy throughout the Remake process was to enhance the original, not distort. As we began to study the game, we realized that everything in Brothers, each environment, the puzzle, and interaction, is there for a specific reason and has its own goal to help support the overall story. Our job then became to modernize the experience while keeping everything that made the original special and memorable.

Gameplay in Brothers is designed primarily for a unique, single-player experience (though local co-op is also included). As you explore, one controller controls both brothers and their ability to interact with the world. Each brother has their own unique abilities that will be required to solve the various puzzles and enemies they encounter.

For the remake, we put in a lot of effort on perfecting the character controls for a seamless, elevated experience. Controller inputs are more responsive than the original, and animations have been remade from scratch for precise movement and transition between actions. For example, when the older brother helps the younger brother climb a ledge, it’s seamless and smooth with each brother affecting the other. And that’s just one of hundreds of interactions we’ve worked to perfect.

We’ve also remade the puzzle and enemy AI to ensure a fun and challenging experience that goes beyond what was possible in 2013. Being chased by dogs or avoiding a charging Troll is a more dynamic thrill now. We thought about making the puzzles more difficult, but felt that would defeat the narrative goals of each section. Because of this, we wanted to improve the look and feel and performance of each puzzle without needlessly making it more difficult just for the sake of making it more difficult.

    An Enchanting World Remade

From icy rivers and soaring heights, to a giant’s castle and dangerous caves, there is just as much beauty as danger.

Along with the controls and animations, we’ve paid particular attention to the amazing environments that the brothers must traverse. As the brothers begin their quest, you’ll roam though their enchanting home village full of thatched roofs and beautiful flower beds, sheep pens and flowing streams. Quickly, you’ll leave the safety of the village and begin to climb treacherous mountains and scale along cliff faces that drop off into nowhere. As the story and adventure moves further from their idyllic village, the tone and themes of the game grow darker.

Throughout the game we worked to maintain proper balance between foreground and background elements as well as enhancing the overall look, especially in cutscenes. To accomplish this balance, we used extensive dynamic lighting, something the Unreal 5 engine is excellent at, along with foreground and background depth of field, and camera positioning to make all of the remade characters, structures and graphic elements as beautiful and impactful as possible.

    A Journey To Remember

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is a classic, remarkable game, one that we are not only honored to work on, but a game that we feel a responsibility to remake with the utmost care and attention to detail.

If you’ve played the game before, we think you’ll discover new things to love about the Remake. If you’ve not played it before, this is your chance to experience a game unlike anything you’ve played before, and now it’s improved with the latest graphics improvements, music and more.

It’s an experience you’ll always remember.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake launches on Xbox Series X|S February 28.

  • A Little to the Left: Learn About the Beloved Puzzler Coming to Game Pass in February

A Little to the Left: Learn About the Beloved Puzzler Coming to Game Pass in February

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

    Summary

    • A Little to the Left comes to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and via Game Pass on February 15.
    • Play on mobile devices for the first time via Xbox Cloud Gaming.
    • Learn more about this peaceful puzzle game with our five reasons to check it out.

Hey there, I’m Annie, co-founder of Max Inferno, a studio I started with my partner Lukas Steinman. Lukas and I have always loved making things together – Halloween costumes, scavenger hunts, dance moves, pun-induced groans, and poorly rhyming cooking songs. When the opportunity arose to make our first game, A Little to the Left, we never imagined it would sell over a million copies in its first year, and win the hearts of such a wide audience.

This experience has allowed us to continue to do what we love, and our game’s journey is about to take another big leap, as it’s coming to Xbox on February 15 with Xbox Game Pass. Here’s why we think you’ll love our tidy little puzzler.

    Peaceful Puzzling

A Little to the Left is all about tidying messes into pleasing arrangements, without worrying about timers or fail-states. It’s peaceful and accessible, with simple controls that anyone can quickly understand. We took a lot of inspiration from our own lives to make this game, which is why many of the objects you’ll be sorting are based on things in our home… like the clock my dad gave me that I mustn’t forget to wind every Wednesday, or a funny bird lamp from Lukas’s grandmother. Please be careful when handling the glassware, that was a gift as well…

Cleanliness is in the Eye of the Beholder

Some puzzles in A Little to the Left have multiple solutions, which offer players different ways of seeing. It’s fun to have to switch one’s method of observation, as everyone seems to have a different take at first glance. If you need any help, we implemented a fun hint system that lets you erase just as much of the hint that you want to see. You can also use the option to “Let It Be” and skip a puzzle entirely. Don’t worry, you won’t miss anything by choosing to move on from a level – you can skip every single puzzle in the game if you just want to see what comes next.

    Cat’s on the Table

We know cats play by their own rules, and it’s precisely this irreverence to our imposed will that makes us love them even more. Throughout A Little to the Left, you’ll sometimes see your carefully cleaned puzzles ruined by a playful cat, who swipes away your hard work just when you think you’re finished. The cat is based on our own cat, Rookie – who continues to surprise us daily with new tactics, and who reminds us to not take ourselves too seriously.

    From the Sofa to Space

The start of the game presents rather mundane items to sort. These are relatable situations, like that junk drawer a lot of people have, or the act of fixing a slightly crooked picture frame. As the game progresses, there is a sense of absurdity that grows, as to what things are to be tidied, and how. Later, you’re asked to fix the reflections in a mirror or fast-forward time to perfectly line up a shadow. These later levels may make you wonder about the nature of control… They’re also some of our favorite puzzles in the game – we hope you like them too!

    Touch to Tidy

We’re very excited to be a part of Xbox Game Pass and to share our game with the massive audience of gaming fans on Xbox. Being part of Xbox Game Pass also allows us to bring A Little to the Left to mobile devices for the first time, thanks to Xbox Cloud Gaming’s Native Touch controls. You can grab and move objects with your hands, or use a compatible controller on the go if you prefer. From the beginning, we wanted every control scheme to feel great to use, so we hope you try them both out and see which you prefer.

A Little to the Left comes to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One with Xbox Game Pass on February 15. The main game will also launch alongside our DLC, Cupboards & Drawers (available separately for $5.99), which includes over 25 new levels and adds extra layers of complexity with tons of objects to tidy into tight spaces and secret compartments. We hope you have a great time discovering our game and experiencing the funny little moments throughout it – we had a lot of fun making it together and are so grateful to have had the opportunity.
