VIVE Wallet: Digital Identity & Assets Management Solution

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

HTC is creating its own place within the Metaverse, with fluid access between its own and partners’ platforms. This is VIVERSE

VIVERSE seamlessly connects users across multiple platforms in a secure and open way. With VIVERSE you can create your own digital identity, build and share a space of your own, and exhibit your collection of digital assets and NFTs. VIVERSE is accessible on any digital platform, so you can get started from your phone, tablet, PC, or VR headset.

HTC recently announced the central platform for VIVERSE: VIVE Connect. Think of VIVE Connect as your home space in the Metaverse. Here, you can create and trade Pods, display your digital assets, and socialize across your friends’ worlds.

HTC is excited to introduce two more services that will make VIVERSE a reality: VIVE Wallet and VIVE Bytes

    VIVE Wallet

VIVE Wallet will let you manage your digital assets securely. You will be able to pay with any currency on any device, anywhere, anytime. This all-in-one digital wallet is also the first to support VR Mode. By harnessing Ethereum and Polygon Blockchain technology, all digital purchases can be seen in your VIVE Wallet.

    VIVE Bytes

VIVE Bytes is the VIVERSE’s digital marketplace for digital assets and NFTs. Here you can access your VIVE Wallet to exchange both original and partner-made digital assets, such as Shu Yamamoto’s Cat Art pieces.

VIVERSE brings all these platforms and services together seamlessly. After visiting the Cat Art exhibition in VR, you can take home your very own piece from the gallery by purchasing the asset on VIVE Bytes using currency from your VIVE Wallet.

Cat Art creator Shu Yamamoto embraced the future of VR technology, resulting in the incredible virtual exhibition we know and love today, saying: “About a year ago, when I heard the proposal to recreate my cat art in the world of virtual reality, I couldn’t quite predict what it would look like. And I watched it gradually complete, but the finished product was far beyond my imagination.”

With VIVERSE, HTC will elevate Yamamoto’s vision into the world of NFTs, and encourage creators to join VIVERSE and bring their astonishing creations to a whole new digital reality.

In late 2021, HTC VIVE released the ultra-portable VIVE Flow immersive VR glasses. VIVE Flow is the ideal anywhere device for the metaverse—an immersive, shared space that’s open and allows people to explore multiple experiential universes together. And since the announcement of VIVE Flow, many have wondered what HTC VIVE has planned for this new digital frontier.

The answer came when HTC co-founder and chairwoman Cher Wang unveiled VIVERSE, the company’s take on what the metaverse can be and should be recently at Mobile World Congress (MWC).

Just four years ago, Cher Wang attended MWC to introduce VIVE Reality, a vision that’s as simple as it is bold: “Merging technology with humanity to unleash imagination.” – Cher Wang

HTC referenced its technological advancements in 5G, blockchain, XR, and AI, all of which are aimed to bolster the power of imagination to create limitless practical benefits for people worldwide.

Plenty of innovations have received the “The Next Big Thing” label over the years, and the metaverse, without a doubt, has big-thing potential. Hundreds of companies within the immersive space are trying to stake their claim in the metaverse and are blazing paths in just as many directions.

So, what is VIVE’s direction, and how has VIVE Reality evolved into VIVERSE?

It became abundantly clear during the MWC announcement that the mission of VIVERSE is not to replace or disconnect from the physical world. Nor is the plan for people to become isolated and constantly fixated in their own fantasy land. The goal is to foster meaningful and impactful connections and forge shared memories together, without the barriers of space and time.

With its expertise in the smartphone business and spanning the eras of 2G, 3G, and 4G, HTC certainly has the credentials to make 5G and high-speed/low latency interconnectivity integral parts of its VIVERSE roadmap.

HTC also plans to throw its weight behind digital autonomy. The company was early to embrace blockchain with the launch of its Exodus smartphone a few years back.

Another fundamental piece of VIVERSE is AI. It’s projected to enable wide-ranging applications in everyday life from DeepQ in medicine and smart-tracking devices, to personalized entertainment and learning experiences, to name just a few.

Leveraging 5G, AI, XR, and blockchain, VIVERSE is a natural successor to HTC’s VIVE Reality efforts over the past four years.

VIVERSE is our place in the Metaverse. Our brand VIVE means life, and VERSE represents the chapters of life,” said Cher Wang.

More than just a VR-based ecosystem

The beginning of the VIVERSE concept video depicts a sunglasses-type device with Augmented Reality (AR) capability. This signals that the VIVERSE will go beyond VR into Extended Reality (XR).

    VIVERSE Video

    VR, AR, or both?

For many people, the metaverse implies VR. While AR adds a digital dimension to real life, VR is considered a digital simulation of the physical world, acting almost as a parallel universe.

The divide between the two will soon blur as AR becomes increasingly immersive and VR achieves a level of real-world likeness. VIVERSE is heading towards an overlapping and interconnected combination of virtual reality, augmented reality, and actual reality.

    VIVE Connect Platform

VIVE Connect is a cross-reality, multi-device portal to the metaverse.

The VIVERSE concept video is simply a glimpse into the possibilities of the future. Still, it’s clear that a one-stop cross-reality portal is in the works, and will support a wide array of hardware devices.

VIVE Connect, which was also introduced at MWC, is one of those solutions.

Based on WebXR and WebAssembly, VIVE Connect is a web-based VR experience. It can be accessed via different hardware form factors and operating systems—such as VR headsets, desktops, notebooks, tablets and smartphones.

In the VIVERSE, users will be able to quickly teleport between games and movies and a host of apps on their preferred device.

    An open and secure metaverse

“VIVERSE is immersive, boundless, and full of new wonders. It’s also a quick portal to other universes created by our partners using our open tools. It’s created by the people, owned by the people, and shared by the people.” – Cher Wang

Joseph Lin, the head of VIVEPORT, previously commented, “An open ecosystem is an advantage in the future. For content developers, this greatly lowers transfer cost, which will attract more talents to embrace our tools, services, and platforms.”

HTC VIVE has always been an advocate for an open virtual ecosystem, and that’s why the VIVEPORT app library supports Oculus devices along with OpenXR.

Proponents believe the metaverse is not merely an immersive 3D Internet, but that it should also embody the Web 3.0 mantra: “read, write, own.” Regarding the metaverse, the mantra could be expanded to: “experience, create, and access assets in any digital world.”

How will different platforms recognize our avatars, NFTs, and cryptocurrencies? This is one of the big questions for metaverse interoperability.

Monetization of Web 2.0 revolves around acquiring and retaining users. Through a walled garden and network effect, the cost for a user to migrate to a competing platform can be very high.

If an influencer wants to move platforms and start over on another content-sharing service, how many fans will follow, and how much time and resources will it take to rebuild the same following?

Web 3.0 aims to help solve these types of issues.

    convert to VRM VTUBER

VIVE Connect currently supports WalletConnect as a sign-in method. In Web 3.0, a wallet is more than an asset holder; it’s a multi-platform user account. HTC VIVE also plans to release Avatar tools leveraging the VRM open standard, which is popular amongst Vtubers.

Adopting open-source protocols will be the key to achieving interoperability. Imagine your own VR avatar and a favorite Vtuber can all enter the VIVERSE together. That could open up many doors to explore, exchange ideas, and have fun within the metaverse. Soon, your NFTs and avatars will have richer utility and added value in this new environment.

    VIVERSE Cat Art

Perhaps in the not-too-distant future, the VIVERSE will help enrich our relationships with family, friends, and people we meet virtually, as well as make our online and real-life experiences more meaningful in unexpected ways.

  • What is VIVERSE? Its Purpose and What it Offers

What is VIVERSE? Its Purpose and What it Offers

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

When people think about a Metaverse, many would imagine just a virtual world where they could interact and explore. However, we believe that a Metaverse should not be just one place monopolized by one single entity. The Metaverse should be a number of digital spaces and experiences interconnected and interoperable, which can be accessed on any device, anytime, and anywhere.

In the current digital reality, every platform and experience is siloed and centralized; the more you try to connect, the more privacy and security you give up. As our digital identity grows more socially and economically valuable, the awareness of protecting it also rises. We at HTC VIVE are working to realize a Metaverse that is open, universal, and transparent. An ecosystem where experiences are integrated, and your digital identity is protected. That is how we envision VIVERSE.

    VIVERSE Definition

VIVERSE is how different experiences and content ecosystems interconnect to offer a more holistic and seamless user experience in a decentralized and open way. Users can connect with one another while having a secure and private digital life. With this complete and persistent virtual identity across services and applications, you can connect with a vast network of content. Content not limited to entertainment, but also education, creation, and anything your imagination can reveal.

You have your very own space in VIVERSE. You can use it as your own corner office to focus on work or a cozy getaway to relax. We have a collection of private VR spaces for you to choose from based on your needs.

    • Arts and Exhibitions

In VIVERSE, the Louvre and other notable exhibits are only a moment away. You can attend exhibitions and appreciate art with your family and friends or you can take yourself on a date and lose yourself in immersive worlds of art. Witness the masterpieces of great artists brought to life in front of your eyes. HTC VIVE is committed to integrating art with technology. We aim to explore the limitless possibilities of art in all its forms.

    • Virtual Concerts

No more painful experience of getting blocked or pushed around in a crowded concert. You can now join concerts where you always have a premium view. Beatday offers holographic imaging and 360 degree viewing angle while ensuring a highly interactive experience.

    • Social Gatherings

Ever tried wine tasting to build community with your team? Take it to the next level in VIVERSE. Same process, same wine, but now you can see the wine’s details displayed before your very eyes.  Relax and enjoy wine with your friends as if they are right beside you.

Meet and collaborate with your team regardless of where you are in the world. Virtual reality enables remote work to be more immersive and empathetic with your team. We can all agree that business and work is not only about productivity, but also about unity and connection. VIVERSE helps you collaborate and connect with your team, even when you’re halfway around the world.

    • Expos and Conferences

Orchestrate or participate in trade shows and expos all from the comfort of your device. With the help of VR, you can present your product in a more nuanced way or immerse your clients in your service. VIVERSE helps you showcase your product or service in the most interesting way possible.

  • HTC VIVE unveils new VIVERSE and 5G innovation

HTC VIVE unveils new VIVERSE and 5G innovation

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

HTC VIVE unveiled a number of innovations at Mobile World Congress 2022, including advances in 5G technology, in-car VR-based entertainment, Location Based Entertainment, and showing the latest updates to the Viverse.

We are at the start of the next era of social interaction and content consumption, and VIVERSE is very much a part of that. Viverse, is our version of the metaverse; an immersive, boundless universe of fantastic new experiences, and a seamless gateway to other universes in collaboration with our partners from the time you wake up in the morning until the time you go to sleep at night.

We’re announcing a number of innovations and products which make life seamless for people exploring Viverse, ranging from VIVE Browser – a new VR-based web browser, and VIVE Connect – a portal to experiencing the Viverse and traversing it, as well as VIVE Guardian – a new tool for VIVE Flow which makes life for parents, guardians and teachers easier by giving them new controls over what young people can see and experience in VIVE flow.

We even introduced a new VIVE Avatar tool, build on VRM standards to make it easy for you to build a single avatar and take it with you into other services. We highlighted that by showing live demonstrations of people moving from VIVE Connect to VIVE Sync to Engage.

We also showed off advanced 5G demos. Working with G Reigns and Supermicro, we built our own low-latency 5G network and powered several demonstrations. The Reign Core 5G solution is compact and highly portable, and played a starring role as live video from radio-controlled cars was delivered to drivers who were sat facing monitors away from the race track, with them making real-time steering adjustments over 5G.

And speaking of cars, we put on a live demonstration of the latest work from holoride. Changing how in-car entertainment for passengers will work in the future – matching VR games and immersive videos to the motion of the vehicle, letting passengers enjoy content in lightweight immersive glasses, VIVE Flow.

But that’s not everything when it comes to entertainment. VIVE also showed the latest from Yullbe Go / Europa Park for Location Based Entertainment, allowing five players wearing VIVE Focus 3 to roam the same map, interact and game together.

  • VIVE takes LBE to the next level

VIVE takes LBE to the next level

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Location Based Entertainment (LBE) is a fast-growing attraction at arcades all over the world, using the power and versatility of VR to create unique immersive experiences for consumers.

It makes perfect sense – instead of a large space being dedicated to more traditional games like Laser Tag which have a fixed physical layout and style, LBEs can constantly evolve and adapt and host multiple players and multiple games in the same space. In fact, the physical space can be reset in a matter of minutes so players can go from a jungle to a spaceship with very little downtime.

HTC VIVE’s advanced work in hardware and software means blending the real and virtual world is effortless. VIVE’s new Wrist Tracker for VIVE Focus 3 adds a new dimension for either hand-tracking or being placed onto props so they can be used in games, whether that’s a tennis racquet, a shield, a weapon, and so much more.

And with arUco codes it’s easy to integrate physical objects like obstacles and walls into the game as well – the camera on the headset sees the code on the object and imports the graphical textures. So players can physically lean up against something which looks like a blank wall in real life, but in VR is part of a spaceship’s bulkhead.

VIVE Focus 3 is perfect for LBEs, delivering an incredible experience which just keeps getting better as we continue to roll out software updates and develop new features. VIVE Focus 3 supports Wi-Fi 6E, perfect for fast-paced action where low latency is essential. A dedicated LBE mode provides flexibility at the touch of a button, supporting multiple players in a game space of up to 1,000m2 – that’s the size of four tennis courts. And the playable area doesn’t even have to be a perfect square or rectangle, our software allows for complicated room shapes like polygons and even L-shaped spaces.

Map sharing between headsets, Visual Optometry mode, and LBE hybrid mode mean businesses can create a unique experience effortlessly and have minimal turnaround time between games. Even the battery on VIVE Focus 3 is designed to be swapped in seconds so LBE arcades can keep headsets in near-constant use, and with a 5K display and 90 Hz refresh rate, people can enjoy stunning visuals even in the middle of non-stop action.

At Mobile World Congress, we had a lot of fun with our friends at Europa Park with their Yullbe Go / MackNext products, showing off three different experiences.

Alpha Mods: In the futuristic city of Ultraville, on a planet far from Earth, guests become part of a special police unit. Equipped with state-of-the-art cars, chase criminals on a wild chase with the “Alpha Mods” on Ultraville’s central highway. Buckle up, it’s going to be a rapid ride!

Ed & Edda: Put on your VR headset and embark on a magical adventure in a completely enchanted Europa-Park: Ed and Edda need your help!  The Night Crab has stolen a precious magical sceptre and is upsetting everything with his magic. Through magical portals and with flying umbrellas you take up the chase. But be careful: you might wake up the dragon who is slumbering in a hidden cave deep under the park… Will you manage to stop the night crab and save Europa-Park?

Moon to Mars: At the beginning, you are on a space station and can enjoy a breathtaking view of our Earth – thanks to the latest VR technology, this is no longer reserved for real astronauts! From here your experience “Moon to Mars” starts and suddenly you find yourself on the red planet. Explore the secrets and beauty of the planet Mars! Are you ready for your first journey into space?

  • HTC VIVE Debuts New Viverse Experience at Mobile World Congress

HTC VIVE Debuts New Viverse Experience at Mobile World Congress

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

From the beginning, at HTC, our VIVE Reality vision has been to merge technology with humanity to unleash the imagination. We recognized, even then, that VIVE Reality would herald new ways of working and living.

Our vision is a world where technology fades to the background and experiences come to the forefront. Where we can push the boundaries of our creativity, collaborate, play, learn and dream. We call this VIVERSE, which is our world within the metaverse; an immersive, boundless universe of fantastic new experiences, and a seamless gateway to other universes in collaboration with our partners from the time you wake up in the morning until the time you go to sleep at night.

Viverse is about how we empower creativity, collaboration, connection, share experiences and more.  VIVE is our brand, which means ‘life’, and Verse represents the chapters of life. So, VIVERSE enables us to create many great memories, and encourages us to truly cherish our lives.

HTC VIVE debuted a live demo of its latest additions to VIVERSE, that connects people from all walks of life to new worlds and experiences, at Mobile World Congress 2022.

Attendees entered Viverse via a browser using multitude of devices such as tablets, PCs, smartphones, and using the VIVE Flow, HTC VIVE’s new immersive glasses. We showed just how easy it is to dive into new worlds and experiences as part of everyday life, across a wide range of devices. We also showed how people can seamlessly move between different venues in VIVE Sync and Engage. The latest Viverse demos illustrated how easy it is to travel between different worlds while maintaining identity, security, and privacy.

“VIVERSE is the next chapter of our VIVE Reality vision. VIVE is our brand and means ‘life’, and Verse refers to the chapters of life. Viverse provides seamless experiences, reachable on any device, anywhere, and is enabled by the virtual and augmented reality, high-speed connectivity, AI, and blockchain technologies that HTC has invested in for several years. We invite partners to join us on his fantastic journey to the internet of presence.” said Cher Wang, Co-Founder and Chairwoman at HTC.

Viverse is an open ecosystem to create new memories, and enjoy new experiences. HTC works with hundreds of partners and developers to make it an open ecosystem, including:

    • Beatday, the world’s first interactive holographic music platform across PC, VR and mobile devices
    • Engage, a virtual communication platform that provides immersive, collaborative environments for live events, meetings, and trainings
    • VRChat, a collection of social VR experiences to interact with friends, create lasting relationships and build community
    • VIVE Sync, the all-in-one meeting and collaboration solution for VR
    • Museum of Other Realities, a growing collection of interactive art and experimentation to connect, share, and experience virtual reality art with others.

Viverse also has features that make it easier to personalize and manage your experience.

Enter Viverse through VIVE Connect, the cross-platform space that allows you to enter other worlds, apps, games, content and more in Viverse. We believe the metaverse should be open and that people should be able to move freely between worlds. We’ve built Viverse around open standards like WebXR to ensure there’s interoperability. And you can surf the web in XR using VIVE Browser, the first XR browser to support Web3 login, WebXR and WebAssembly, and it’s compatible with many XR devices.

VIVE Flow is the first VR device to support a cryptowallet, and you can store and manage NFT and digital assets securely using WalletConnect. Open the Viverse companion app on your smartphone and use your walletconnect login to access all of your assets to customize your avatar and digital spaces in Viverse.

    VIVE Guardian

As the metaverse continues to expand, it’s important that the XR industry looks at ways to keep people safe. To secure the young people’s privacy and security in the metaverse, we introduced Vive Guardian, parental controls to help protect children from inappropriate behaviors and contents in the virtual world.

There are two modes – Free Mode, and Broadcast. In Free Mode, parents can grant access to specific apps or pieces of content and then the user is free to explore within those apps. In Broadcast mode, a single experience – app or piece of content – is launched from the parent’s companion app and broadcast to the headset, so it’s easy for the kids to be watching a TV show or film on VIVE Flow, streamed directly from an Android tablet or smartphone.*

And adults can remotely see what content is being used on the child’s VR device, through the parent’s companion app on their  Android smartphone – built using similar technology to our VIVE Business Training app. Children also must request permission to make purchases, download new content and more so there is greater transparency for kids and parents.

No matter what age your children are, they shouldn’t be using VR without parental guidance. VIVE Guardian is designed to keep parents and children safe. It is important for parents and children to discuss the privacy and security risks that come with using any VR device.

To enable VIVE Guardian on VIVE Focus, Focus Plus or VIVE FLOW, simply go to the Google Play store and Viveport to download the VIVE Guardian companion app for your Android device and headset, follow the prompts and VIVE Guardian will be automatically connected.

HTC also plans to launch VIVE Create, a browser-based, code-free VR content creation platform that makes it easy to create customized VR content for families, as well as educational and training purposes.

Access Viverse today worldwide on Android tablets and smartphones, and select VIVE headsets. Simply go to viverse.com to get started.

Every organisation across every sector can feel real-world benefits from low-latency highly-reliable private 5G networks.

Building on the success of technical demos shown at CES, HTC unveiled its latest portable private 5G solution – the Reign Core – working closely with new HTC subsidiary, G Reigns, and in collaboration with Supermicro.

Supermicro provided hardware as part of this collaboration, demonstrating the versatility of the new Reign Core 5G product. G Reigns has unique experience in the industry, across both mobile and XR, bringing that knowledge together to develop advanced software for private 5G networks.

Reign Core is designed to work seamlessly with Open RAN, essentially allowing organisations to buy ‘off-the-shelf’ hardware components, such as Supermicro and Lumen Technologies, and then run tailored software to create their own private 5G solution, scalable to any size.

Reign Core has a compact all-in-one footprint making it highly portable. And it can be set-up in just 30 minutes, making it perfect for location-based services, and even demonstrating a proof of concept. Powerful and flexible, Reign Core is complaint with 3GPP and O-RAN structure using an x86 base server to compose a 5G network system including 5GC, BBU, RRU and L3 switch.

Reign Core powered several experiences at Mobile World Congress, including a scaled-down example of driving cars remotely. Using scale-model radio controlled cars, drivers were sat facing away from the track, watching two high-res video feeds of a first-person view and a top-down view – beamed over 5G – so they could steer the cars through the course. At the same time, the feed was also viewable on VIVE Flow headsets for spectators.

The top-down view was filmed and broadcast via a new 5G AI Smart Camera , which is perfect for scenarios like sports stadiums where safety of large crowds is a priority. The 5G smart camera system works on Edge AI and is fully OSSA compliant.

Simultaneously on the same private 5G network, we hosted a 5G Cloud VR demonstration, streaming PCVR quality to multiple VIVE Focus 3 all-in-one headsets.

HTC VIVE is also expanding its strategic efforts with Lumen Technologies, continuing the success the two companies have enjoyed together.

  • Emissive and HTC VIVE support recreation of Notre Dame in VR

Emissive and HTC VIVE support recreation of Notre Dame in VR

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Construction of Notre-Dame de Paris began in 1163 and took over a century to be completed – with the exterior becoming globally recognised and admired. Over time its purpose changed back and forth, and it bore witness and host to key moments in history such as Napoleon Bonaparte crowning himself Emperor, was the setting of Victor Hugo’s classic – the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The centuries of history and exquisite design made an impression across the world, and in 2019 when a fire destroyed significant parts of the interior and exterior, the loss was felt far beyond the borders of France.

Globally, there was an outpouring of shock that such a cultural landmark was lost. France immediately began campaigns to fund rebuilding the structure, and it was natural that people would look at how to preserve the memories and experience of Notre Dame, beyond just photos and videos.

Through Emissive’s strong background at creating incredible interactive experiences, including ‘Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass’ which was the Louvre’s first-ever VR exhibition, the company was selected to help bring Notre Dame back to life digitally. It took months of painstaking work to rebuild Notre Dame in VR, using high-res scans of the interior, and now the experience is ready to show to the world.

Emissive’s work means that visitors can experience the beauty of Notre Dame, using the power and clarity of VIVE Focus 3 to explore the interior of the illustrious Cathedral. In partnership with Orange, the exhibition opens to the public on 15 Jan in la Défense, Paris.

Cher Wang, Co-founder and Chairwoman, HTC Corp, said, “Allowing people to experience in fantastic detail the awe-inspiring beauty and history of Notre Dame cathedral is an outstanding example of how virtual reality can ensure that history lives on. Our compact, all in one VIVE Focus 3 headset enables people to absorb the atmosphere and admire the marvellous architecture and precious relics as if they were there.”

She continued, “We’re particularly proud of this work by our content partner Emissive, which has led the world in creating extraordinary and unique VR-based cultural experiences.”

Fabien Barati, CEO of Emissive said, “We are delighted to show the great potential of immersive expeditions to the general public. Our teams are proud to contribute, through their expertise, to the reconstruction, preservation and enhancement of this unique monument, so rich in symbols that is Notre-Dame de Paris.

In the coming weeks, Emissive and HTC VIVE will share more details about how this incredible work came to life.
