  • LAI Games Brings VR to the Arcade Masses

LAI Games Brings VR to the Arcade Masses

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Virtual Rabbids: The Big Ride takes guests through the wild and wacky world of Ubisoft’s signature creatures.

Allison Timberlake has been marketing LAI Games for the past 10 years. It’s her job to get LAI Games seen in all the right places and to ensure the company continues to have a reputation for quality and innovation. We had the pleasure of sitting down to discuss her company’s next big venture: Virtual Rabbids: The Big Ride, VR’s first coin or card operated, unattended ride.

    Virtual Rabbids: The Big Ride

Step into the wacky world of Virtual Rabbids with the industry’s first attendant-free VR attraction.

LAI Games has been in the out-of-home entertainment business for over 60 years and is one of the leading innovators in the development and manufacture of arcade games. The company’s newest offering is Virtual Rabbids: The Big Ride, which is revolutionary in that it is an unattended VR ride with a small footprint. Until now, if an operator of an arcade wanted to offer guests cutting-edge virtual reality, they would have to dedicate a large space for a VR installation and pay people to staff it. Virtual Rabbids is a coin or card-operated ride that requires no attendants and takes up the same amount of space as other mid-size arcade games. This makes VR accessible to arcades of all sizes, from small mom-and-pop operations to out-of-home entertainment industry leaders like Main Event and Dave and Busters, who have Virtual Rabbids in every location.

Virtual Rabbids: The Big Ride on HTC VIVE

Virtual Rabbids: The Big Ride — Made possible with the high-end visuals and battle-tested design of VIVE.

The game wouldn’t be possible without premium components, starting with the HTC Vive headsets that bring the game to life. Not only do guests get the best possible visuals, but the headsets are sturdy enough to withstand constant use. This doesn’t just apply to arcades, but also locations such as shopping centers and malls where there is no one keeping an eye on them. There is even a cruise-ship version that you can find on every ship in Carnival’s line.

Add to that AAA content provider Ubisoft’s Rabbids taking guests on three over-the-top thrilling adventures, D-Box motion-controlled seats that precisely follow the on-screen action, and top-quality wind and sound effects, and you’ve got the best experience available in arcades today. Virtual Rabbids: The Big Ride was awarded the prestigious Innovator Award from the Amusement and Music Operators Association, the people who make their living with arcade games, and is currently the #1 earning game throughout the US. Check out guests’ hilarious reactions while riding on the LAI Games YouTube channel.

Tabor Carlton, Marketing Director for LAI Games said “We are proud to have changed the landscape of what is possible in out-of-home entertainment and bring VR to a much wider audience. We believe it’s the best technology available today, and it’s so fun to watch people ride it and have a great time.”

Soak in some Arizona Sunshine with The Damned DLC this August

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

    Hi everyone,

We’re back with more news for Arizona Sunshine – The Damned DLC! We’re excited to let you know that The Damned DLC will launch for HTC Vive (Pro) on August 27th. In case you can’t wait, have a first look at the gameplay trailer here.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7GOFzNCK-8?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque&w=730&h=411]

Featuring the largest Arizona Sunshine mission to date, The Damned DLC is a new stand-alone story in the Arizona Sunshine universe that ties into the events of the previous Dead Man DLC, which had you scrambling to launch a nuclear missile to stop the advance of the undead.

In a story about the drastic measures taken and sacrifices made to try and contain the spread of the undead, you play as Liam, a survivor who not that long ago happened upon the military base at the refinery. As the pressure of the undead rises, drastic measures are being prepared and access to the base is now strictly monitored and only allowed for people that can make themselves useful. Liam strikes a deal with Emily, the base commander, to assist in a mission to restore the function of a nearby hydroelectric dam.

With Arizona Sunshine – The Damned DLC, our aim was to find inspiring location that you’ll want to explore. We wanted to create a level that let us play around with unprecedented scale and verticality, and a big dam gave us a lot of opportunities for that – both inside the massive structure and out. We hope you’re not afraid of heights…

See you in The Damned on August 27th!

  • Get a new vantage point on storytelling with Eleven Eleven

Get a new vantage point on storytelling with Eleven Eleven

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

Since the dawn of digital entertainment, developers have been striving to push the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of storytelling, utilizing new tools provided by innovative new technology such as VR. The recently released Viveport experience Eleven Eleven presents a bold new experiment in narrative – allowing players to experience a vibrant and layered story from different perspectives in order to piece together what exactly happened in the last minutes of a bustling planet before a terrible cataclysm. We sat down with the creative team to find out what went into crafting this compelling sci-fi yarn.

    Interview by Nathan Allen Ortega

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASSnMKgQ_7U?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque&w=730&h=411]

Tell us a bit about yourself and the development team

The development team is comprised of three creators, including myself – Mehrad Noori, Director of Global Programming, NBCUniversal International Networks, creator and executive producer of Eleven Eleven; Michael Salmon – Head of Immersive Technologies, NBCUniversal International, creator and producer of Eleven Eleven, and multiple AWGIE award-winning writer Lucas Taylor. It was produced in association with Academy Award®-winning digital production studio, Digital Domain, with original music composed by Bleeding Fingers – the award-winning custom score production company co-founded by Han Zimmer.

How did the idea behind Eleven Eleven come about?

Our goal with Eleven Eleven was to create a new format for storytelling that was built from the ground up for VR and AR.

That meant taking a step back from traditional structures found in film and television and starting with a blank slate to make unbiased decisions that would make for the best experience in this medium. Rather than adapting familiar formats like episodic series, we focused on creating a new structure that takes full advantage of the sense of presence and perspective that is so unique to VR and AR.

It became clear early on that this tangible feeling of time and space lent itself to creating a real-time experience with multiple characters connected by a common timeline and environment, as we do in the real world. So we designed the format around this idea and created what we call a “multilinear narrative,” with several stories playing out simultaneously and culminating in a global event that ties them all together. In this case we focused on an extinction-level event that takes place at the end of our story. The urgency of the clock ticking down eleven minutes and eleven seconds to the end of the world inherently links the characters together as they face what could be their final moments.

What would you say are the major creative influences on the story and how you tell it in VR?

There are many parallels between immersive technology and immersive theater, so we drew inspiration from productions like Sleep No More and Secret Cinema, which feature multiple storylines running simultaneously for audiences to follow.  We wanted our experience to play out in the same way, with our audience and our characters sharing the same environment while the clock ticks down in real-time, without cuts or edits.

However, unlike immersive theatre, VR and AR gave us an additional tool not found in the real world – the ability to manipulate time and space.  In our virtual world we can rewind and fast-forward time to see things again from new vantage points. We can teleport long distances to follow the action instantaneously, and we can change the scale of our environment to gain perspectives never seen before.

Tell us a bit about your thoughts on the future of digital storytelling, and the role VR can play in that future

I often get asked “Is VR the future of storytelling?” My answer is always that VR is a future of storytelling. I don’t believe that it will ever replace film or television entirely because consumers still want the  choice of a passive viewing experience.  VR is a medium that inherently requires participation from the viewer. With Eleven Eleven, that participation revolves around the user’s perspective, i.e. how they choose to focus their attention. In the future we imagine you’ll be able to participate in the story itself and have agency in how it unfolds. With VR, since your field of view isn’t limited by a rectangular frame, there are opportunities to make this participation feel much more intuitive and “real” than film or TV, offering audiences a distinct alternative when they feel like taking a more active role in their experience.

Eleven Eleven weaves an interesting character ensemble story around the remaining minutes of a space station as it is blown to oblivion. How difficult was it to craft an intricate narrative where the player can experience each piece in whatever way they’d like?

The biggest challenge was timing. Because our experience takes place in real-time, without any cuts, we weren’t able to use traditional editing tricks to cheat time. The narrative braids multiple storylines together across a common timeline, so any change to one character’s story could have a knock-on effect on one, or all, of the others. It took many cycles of scriptwriting and pre-visualization, finessing the timings of both each time, until we had a set of tightly woven stories with no downtime for any of the characters.

Were there any ideas or moments that wound up on the cutting room floor that you wished could’ve made it into the final experience?

Tons! We had no shortage of ideas, from more storylines to additional features.  But we soon realized the more we put in, the more potential there was to distract the user from the story. As a new format, we had to be judicious not to overwhelm the user with too many characters or tools, and focus on making the tightest package that would offer the most enjoyable experience possible.

Eleven Eleven was exhibited at this year’s SXSW Virtual Cinema showcase. Tell us about what it was like getting players facetime with this experience in a film festival environment.

As the world premiere, SXSW was the first time we got to share Eleven Eleven with the public, and it was really amazing to see how well they received it.  We were particularly interested to see how users chose to spend their time in the environment. The experience features three viewing modes (Story Mode, Explore Mode and Goddess Mode), each offering different perspectives and varying levels of passive versus active viewing.  We were excited to see that each user managed these tools differently: some chose to stay in the default setting of “Story Mode,” and stick with one character for all of their allotted time. Others decided to branch off in “Explore Mode,” free-roaming the environment to see as many characters and locations as they could before their time ran out. While some used “Goddess Mode,” shrinking the scale of the environment, and watched everything play out in miniature below them.  The whole point of the format is to give the audience the choice in how they view the action, so we were thrilled to see each user craft their own unique experience.

The universe of Eleven Eleven is rich and complex. How important was it to craft a vibrant sci-fi universe in which to tell your story?

One of our main goals with Eleven Eleven was to place users in an environment that they could discover on their own. We had to design the ability to explore this world, but we also had to make sure that it was worth exploring. So, for us, world-building meant literally building a world that was rich enough to entice users to want to poke around and see what they can find.  We laced the environment with ancillary characters, as well as objects and audio cues that give the user clues about the broader story. Enter a room and you might find a radio that’s playing a pirate broadcast from somewhere else on the planet. Or walk around our villain’s quarters to examine her collection of art and artifacts that reveal stories about the nations of Kairos Linea. These Easter eggs help paint a comprehensive picture of the world we created and how its inhabitants arrived at this pivotal point in their history.

Are there any more planned adventures in the Eleven Eleven world?

While we would love to continue the stories we started in Eleven Eleven and hope to see more of this universe in the future, we have nothing to announce at this time.

Talk a bit about your experience working with Syfy to bring this interactive story to life

As NBCUniversal’s global, multiplatform media brand that gives science fiction fans of all kinds a universe to call home, SYFY is the perfect fit to present Eleven Eleven to connect with their sci-fi fans who we know will love this product.

How long did Eleven Eleven take to develop, and how big was the team throughout?

Eleven Eleven took over two years to develop from the initial idea, and the hard work and collaboration of over 100 talented artists and engineers.

    What’s next for your team?

As you can imagine, our priority is the launch of Eleven Eleven. We’re really looking forward to seeing how audiences receive Eleven Eleven and what we can learn from their feedback. Beyond that, we are always exploring innovative opportunities for storytelling and delivering great content.

Sounds great! We can’t wait to see what you and the team come up with next. Thanks for chatting with us!

Eleven Eleven is now available on Viveport for Vive and Oculus Rift users. After you dive into this rich story experience, come chat about your theories and thoughts with other users in our Community Forums!

Innovative experiences made possible with Vive Pro Eye

At CES 2019, Major League Baseball (MLB) debuted eye tracking on Vive Pro Eye as a key component of its “MLB Home Run Derby VR” experience, allowing users full menu control without a traditional controller.

“We’ve invested in VR technology to connect our fans to our game and deliver a new level of engagement through VR game competitions and in-ballpark attractions,” said Jamie Leece, Senior Vice President, Games and VR, Major League Baseball. “By integrating eye tracking technology into Home Run Derby VR, we are able to transport this immersive baseball experience to any location without additional controllers needed. Our fans can simply operate menus by using their eyes.”

Developed by Zerolight, the BMW M Virtual Experience allows potential customers to configure, explore, and sit inside a simulated M5 in immersive virtual reality. Be it paint, wheels, or interior details, customers are free to customize the popular, high-performance sedan as they see fit. When the customization is complete, they can get behind the wheel, interact with features, and take it for a test drive. After the experience is complete, each customer receives a personalized microsite of their unique customizations, a 360 turntable to see it from all angles, and even beauty shots for good measure.

“The Vive Pro Eye has taken everything that was great about the Vive Pro and pushed it to the next level,” said Chris O’Connor, Technical Director at Zerolight. “Using this headset’s eye tracking technology, we can add significant extra value to our clients’ projects with foveated rendering and detailed user behavior insights.”

In business, public speaking skills are essential, but gaining experience can be difficult and intimidating. Ovation eliminates these and other obstacles by harnessing the power of virtual reality. The VR experience allows users to customize their training to replicate real-life situations from ballroom to courtroom, in addition to using eye tracking data to provide feedback designed to grow users’ skills and confidence.

“Arguably the most important element of communication is eye contact; with the Vive Pro Eye, Ovation can actively guide improvement by measuring and providing feedback on where exactly users are distributing their eye contact throughout a speech,” said Jeff Marshall, CEO, Ovation. “Our virtual venues come to life as individual audience members can react with various animations when a user makes direct eye contact with them. As a developer, there’s just no going back once you’ve seen all that eye tracking makes possible.”

  • Drag:on varies air resistance for VR feedback

Drag:on varies air resistance for VR feedback

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Drag:on varies air resistance for VR feedback

    Arduino TeamJune 3rd, 2019

As seen here, “Standard controllers for virtual reality (VR) lack sophisticated means to convey realistic, kinesthetic impression on size, resistance or inertia.” To overcome these limitations, André Zenner and Antonio Krüger at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) have come up with Drag:on—a haptic feedback device that changes air resistance and weight distribution using a pair of commercially-available hand fans.

Drag:on uses a pair of MG996R servos to actuate the fan, shifting its weight and air resistance as needed to simulate a virtual environment. The assembly is attached to an HTC Vive tracker, and an Arduino Nano provides control and computer interface via a USB serial link.

Drag:on leverages the airflow occurring at the controller during interaction. By dynamically adjusting its surface area, the controller changes the drag and rotational inertia felt by the user. In a user study, we found that Drag:on can provide distinguishable levels of haptic feedback. Our prototype increases the haptic realism in VR compared to standard controllers and when rotated or swung improves the perception of virtual resistance. By this, Drag:on provides haptic feedback suitable for rendering different virtual mechanical resistances, virtual gas streams, and virtual objects differing in scale, material and fill state

More details on the project can be found in the researchers’ paper here.

VR boxing robot actually punches back

    Arduino TeamMay 15th, 2019

VR environments are meant to be immersive, but if you’ve ever thought what was missing is being actually pummeled by robotic fists, then James Bruton’s newest project could be just the thing.

Bruton recently teamed up with students from Portsmouth University to build a robot that works in the real world, and coordinates its movements with a virtual setting displayed on the human’s headset.

The robot itself is controlled by an Arduino Mega, and features a differential (tank) drive with encoders for feedback. Shoulders can tilt from left to right, and the actual punching motion is handled by pneumatic actuators built from modified bicycle pumps. Robo-fists are covered by boxing gloves to keep humans relatively safe, and flesh-based competitors are given a small shield and sword-bat with which to fight back!

I worked on this project with final year degree students in Computer Games Technology at Portsmouth University CCI faculty. The robot hardware is controlled over a serial interface, the team built an VR game which controls the robot, so when you get hit in VR you get hit in real life! The robot is tracked back into VR with Vive trackers so it stays in sync.

  • Infinity Weekend Playlist: Band Practice

    Infinity Weekend Playlist: Band Practice

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

This weekend’s playlist was curated by Angela Song, host of VIVE Live

I like to spend my time in VR doing the things that I love to do in real life: dance, travel and of course, play music. Whether I’m practicing the piano or playing console games like Rock Band or Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun!, I always have fun jamming out, and it’s no different in VR.

For this weekend playlist, I thought I’d share my favorite VR rhythm and musical experiences available in Viveport Infinity. These four experiences are easy to grasp but hard to master which keeps me coming back for more:

    Happy Drummer VR

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJU92L4aozQ]

A pre-historic themed rhythm game, players must keep the beat by banging their clubs against various drums in time with the cosmic stars dictating their tempo. With 3 levels of increasing difficulty, eight pieces of original music and two fun environments, Infinity members will find themselves lost in time when playing Happy Drummer VR.

    RIFF VR

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O07UbKzLL9w]

RIFF VR is a one of a kind music role-playing experience as you become the guitarist, drummer or singer of your very own VR band. Get high scores to move from the rehearsal area and your garage to a TV studio where your dreams of fame might be coming true. If you’re good enough, you can even make it big and perform in a stadium full of screaming fans!

RIFF VR has a library of 20 tracks from bands such as Poison, Europe, KISS, Joe Walsh, 3 Doors Down, Fall Out Boy, X Ambassadors and more!

    Jam Studios

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Gkn7YhaPcw?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque&w=730&h=411]

Jam Studio VR is a freestyle interactive music creation application that allows anyone, at any age, to create and perform great music or play like a DJ, regardless of their musical experience or abilities. Jam Studio VR features songs by Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Flo Rida, Craig Chaquico, David Ellefson, and Euge Groove.

    Drummer Talent VR

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CChtULUnfqs]

A realistic drumming simulation game, players use their VR controllers to play on a full virtual drum kit. Whether you’ve never hit a drum before or are a seasoned professional,  Drummer Talent VR will hone your skills and challenge you to become a better percussionist.

For the month of June, new and existing Infinity members with these new headsets can redeem two free months by signing into the service. New content is added frequently and with 64% of all titles in the subscription service launching in Viveport Infinity on day one of their Viveport launch, members have optimal choice when it comes to playing the newest VR content.

    Developer Benefits

As Viveport continues to welcome new audiences and devices onto its platform, Viveport Infinity developers experience greater reach and potential profits. To further support Viveport Infinity developers, Viveport increased the developer’s share of revenue earned to 80/20 up from 70/30. Running from April 1st through the end of 2019, this increase in profits applies to all titles in Viveport Infinity. In addition, with a consumer’s unlimited access to content, more developers can monetize a single member with Viveport Infinity, increasing potential revenue for a developer.
