15 most wanted games still coming in 2022

It might be getting a bit colder outside, but 2022 is far from over–and the stacked lineup of upcoming PS4 and PS5 titles attests to this. The next few months are set to some of the best for PlayStation gamers, offering top-class FPS action, critically acclaimed indie adventures, the return of fan-favorite JRPG classics, and beloved characters exploring new gaming frontiers. And, of course, there’s that little game called God of War Ragnarök coming too. With so many exciting new games launching in 2022, let’s check out some of the most noteworthy titles to round out the year.

Tunic

An itty-bitty fox in bright green garb goes on a great big adventure in one of the most talked-about indie hits of the year. Tunic is a labor of love from independent creator Andrew Shouldice, who–along with his talented team–has created a delightful isometric action-adventure game that pays homage to genre classics and forms a beautiful and unique world of its own. Find tools, treasures, and abilities, solve environmental puzzles, battle fierce monsters, and even decode a mysterious alphabet to uncover clues to aid you on your quest.

Post Void

Have you ever just had an eye-searing, brain-pounding headrush where blood seems to be pumping and pulsing through your head, and your heart is pounding… but, like, in a good way? Welcome to the world of Post Void, a mix of classic FPS gameplay and brightly-colored, high-contrast visuals designed to make you blissfully uncomfortable. The neon scenery and delightfully grotesque enemies will sear into your eyeballs as you race through retro-styled FPS levels as quickly as possible. Because if you don’t move fast and kill everything even faster, your brain will melt (literally in-game, figuratively IRL). Post Void is truly a discordant experience you won’t soon forget. Valkyrie Elysium

There will be plenty of Norse mythology to go around on PlayStation these next few months, starting with Square-Enix’s action-RPG revival Valkyrie Elysium. Aiding Maria are the Einherjar, souls of fallen warriors, each with their own stories and motivations. They grant boons to Maria as she engages in skillful, action-driven, combo-heavy combat. Use the companions and skills at your disposal to build up the Arts Gauge and unleash the glorious Divine Arts upon your foes! Be vigilant, however, because Maria isn’t the only Valkyrie in this world with a mission to fulfill. A Plague Tale: Requiem

In this highly anticipated follow-up to fan-favorite adventure game A Plague Tale: Innocence, child heroes Amicia and her younger brother Hugo have escaped the oppressors at home. The Provence region of France seems like a good place for the pair to settle down initially. But the black plague is still spreading, and Hugo’s supernatural powers are proving difficult for his young mind to control. Does the secret of Hugo’s strange abilities lie on a mysterious island? The duo will again need to go on a dangerous journey, aided only by a few trusted friends. New Tales from the Borderlands

Things are getting weird in the Borderlands universe–weirder than usual, anyway. New Tales from the Borderlands brings players back to one of gaming’s weirdest and wildest settings in an all-new narrative adventure set in Promethea. Rather than simply shooting your way out of problems, New Tales from the Borderlands will offer a branching storyline where your dialogue choices will determine where affable jackasses Anu, Fran, and Octavia wind up stumbling next during an extremely miserable day. Well, miserable for them, not for you–you’ll be enjoying the bizarre situations, snappy dialogue, and pervasive strange humor that’s made Borderlands such an enduring hit as our would-be heroes get themselves into (and out of) another fine mess.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

Call of Duty certainly needs no introduction among gamers–it’s the biggest and most influential first-person shooter series. In Modern Warfare II, players will experience some of the most sweeping and exciting revisions to classic COD gameplay that the series has ever seen. Improved AI, new movement options like swimming and sliding, better vehicle interactions (like being able to fire out of windows), realistic damage, and a huge overhaul to the Gunsmith that will allow players to fine-tune their weapon attachments to create their ideal firearms.

The long-awaited follow-up God of War Ragnarök follows the adventures of Kratos, his teenage son Atreus, and their advisor Mimir in their journey to stop the impending apocalypse and reveal the secrets of Atreus’s destiny. Faces familiar and new will appear on this epic journey through the Nine Realms, including the terrain of Vanaheim, Svartalfheim, and the legendary Asgard.

As tempting as it may be to take in the (stunning) scenery, these are lands of conflict and strife, and Kratos will have to engage in the visceral combat that God of War fans have come to love. New abilities and weaponry, such as the Dauntless and Stonewall shields and new summons for Atreus, add more flair and intensity to fighting than ever. God of War Ragnarök aims to captivate players come November, so be sure you’re there to witness the twilight of the gods.

Goat Simulator 3

Have you ever wondered what life would be like if you were a goat with an appetite for fashion and destruction that just happened to have a complex physics engine applied to their daily activities of causing mass chaos? Probably not, but you’re definitely curious now. Goat Simulator 3 (don’t ask about Goat Simulator 2) is perhaps the weirdest, wildest sandbox game yet. As the titular goat, it’s up to you to do something. Anything, really.

The island of San Angora is your playground for goat-y and not very goat-like activities. Jetpacks! Vehicles! Explosions! Weird alien slime! Sports! Customizable Fashion! It’s all here for some reason. And what’s even better is that you can get together in a herd with your friends for multiplayer madness to lick, headbutt, and have a goat-tastic time.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me

Gaming’s premiere horror anthology series continues with a brand-new, standalone story. Holmes’s infamous “Murder Hotel”–a historical building laden with all manner of diabolical killing devices and traps. Inside the hotel, the film crew soon finds themselves as subjects in the palm of a sick mastermind determined to become the most notorious murderer of all time. Can your posse escape the “killing rooms” and survive a stay in the hell hotel? You can play through this story solo or share the terror with friends: enjoy simultaneous online co-operative play, or see which of you makes it out alive in controller-passing couch co-op. The survival horror genre returns to the cold, sprawling vastness of space in the Callisto Protocol. Protagonist Jacob Lee is serving time at the Black Iron prison colony when a swarm of monstrous creatures begins appearing within the heavily fortified prison walls.

Something truly terrible is going on within these anguish-filled halls, and Jacob needs to discover the prison’s hidden secrets–and somehow use the limited resources he can scavenge to escape with his life. But even if you find a means to break out, you still have to contend with an ever-increasing army of rapidly evolving bio-horrors. Remember: they might not be able to hear you scream in space, but your downstairs neighbor will definitely hear you losing it when you’re playing The Callisto Protocol at 3am in the dark.

The next few months are set to some of the best for PlayStation gamers, offering top-class FPS action, critically acclaimed indie adventures, the return of fan-favorite JRPG classics, and beloved characters exploring new gaming frontiers. And, of course, there’s that little game called God of War Ragnarök coming too. With so many exciting new games launching in 2022, let’s check out some of the most noteworthy titles to round out the year.

Tunic

An itty-bitty fox in bright green garb goes on a great big adventure in one of the most talked-about indie hits of the year. Tunic is a labor of love from independent creator Andrew Shouldice, who–along with his talented team–has created a delightful isometric action-adventure game that pays homage to genre classics and forms a beautiful and unique world of its own. Find tools, treasures, and abilities, solve environmental puzzles, battle fierce monsters, and even decode a mysterious alphabet to uncover clues to aid you on your quest.

Post Void

Have you ever just had an eye-searing, brain-pounding headrush where blood seems to be pumping and pulsing through your head, and your heart is pounding… but, like, in a good way? Welcome to the world of Post Void, a mix of classic FPS gameplay and brightly-colored, high-contrast visuals designed to make you blissfully uncomfortable. The neon scenery and delightfully grotesque enemies will sear into your eyeballs as you race through retro-styled FPS levels as quickly as possible. Because if you don’t move fast and kill everything even faster, your brain will melt (literally in-game, figuratively IRL). Post Void is truly a discordant experience you won’t soon forget. (Please note that this game is inappropriate for players with sensitivity to flashing lights.)

Valkyrie Elysium

There will be plenty of Norse mythology to go around on PlayStation these next few months, starting with Square-Enix’s action-RPG revival Valkyrie Elysium. Ragnarök draws near, and a desperate Odin summons a Valkyrie warrior, Maria, the last hope of a world filled with ruin and despair. Aiding Maria are the Einherjar, souls of fallen warriors, each with their own stories and motivations. They grant boons to Maria as she engages in skillful, action-driven, combo-heavy combat. Use the companions and skills at your disposal to build up the Arts Gauge and unleash the glorious Divine Arts upon your foes! Be vigilant, however, because Maria isn’t the only Valkyrie in this world with a mission to fulfill. (Don’t forget: The digital deluxe edition of Valkyrie Elysium also includes the original all-time PSP classic Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth.)

A Plague Tale: Requiem

In this highly anticipated follow-up to fan-favorite adventure game A Plague Tale: Innocence, child heroes Amicia and her younger brother Hugo have escaped the oppressors at home. The Provence region of France seems like a good place for the pair to settle down initially. But the black plague is still spreading, and Hugo’s supernatural powers are proving difficult for his young mind to control. Does the secret of Hugo’s strange abilities lie on a mysterious island? The duo will again need to go on a dangerous journey, aided only by a few trusted friends. There will be challenging environmental puzzles, new weapons and tools to combat threats, loads of emotional story moments, and rats. Oh, so many rats.

Gotham Knights

Batman is dead, and without its most prominent crime-stopper, Gotham City’s gone to hell in a handbasket. New Tales from the Borderlands

Things are getting weird in the Borderlands universe–weirder than usual, anyway. New Tales from the Borderlands brings players back to one of gaming’s weirdest and wildest settings in an all-new narrative adventure set in Promethea. Rather than simply shooting your way out of problems, New Tales from the Borderlands will offer a branching storyline where your dialogue choices will determine where affable jackasses Anu, Fran, and Octavia wind up stumbling next during an extremely miserable day. Well, miserable for them, not for you–you’ll be enjoying the bizarre situations, snappy dialogue, and pervasive strange humor that’s made Borderlands such an enduring hit as our would-be heroes get themselves into (and out of) another fine mess.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

Call of Duty certainly needs no introduction among gamers–it’s the biggest and most influential first-person shooter series. In Modern Warfare II, players will experience some of the most sweeping and exciting revisions to classic COD gameplay that the series has ever seen. Improved AI, new movement options like swimming and sliding, better vehicle interactions (like being able to fire out of windows), realistic damage, and a huge overhaul to the Gunsmith that will allow players to fine-tune their weapon attachments to create their ideal firearms.

CoD’s much-beloved multiplayer is getting a shot in the arm as well with all-new modes: Knockout, a 6v6 competition to be the last team standing holding a precious package, and Prisoner Rescue, where one team of players attempts to breach a compound to rescue hostages from a heavily fortified structure, while the opposing side defends their turf and works to put them down. Whether you’re in it for the campaign or eager to dive into the multiplayer competition–or both–Modern Warfare 2 offers plenty to get excited over.

Skull and Bones

Sonic Frontiers

The most famous hedgehog on Earth needs little introduction. Sonic’s latest adventure takes him and his posse to the Starfall Islands in search of the Chaos Emeralds. Longtime nemesis Dr. Eggman, while trying to uncover the secrets of a lost civilization, tripped the island’s advanced security system, opening rifts between the island world and the digital realm of Cyber Space. Sonic Frontiers is the first Sonic game to embrace open-world exploration, allowing players to use various new movement and attack skills to dash, smash, and crash through gorgeous free-roaming environments. You’ll also tackle traditional linear 3D platforming challenges in the Cyber Space levels, which hearken back to classic Sonic stages. Can Sonic rescue his friends from Cyber Space, solve the secret of the Starfall Islands, and stop Dr. Eggman’s ambitions?

God of War Ragnarök

The long-awaited follow-up God of War Ragnarök follows the adventures of Kratos, his teenage son Atreus, and their advisor Mimir in their journey to stop the impending apocalypse and reveal the secrets of Atreus’s destiny. Faces familiar and new will appear on this epic journey through the Nine Realms, including the terrain of Vanaheim, Svartalfheim, and the legendary Asgard.

As tempting as it may be to take in the (stunning) scenery, these are lands of conflict and strife, and Kratos will have to engage in the visceral combat that God of War fans have come to love. New abilities and weaponry, such as the Dauntless and Stonewall shields and new summons for Atreus, add more flair and intensity to fighting than ever. God of War Ragnarök aims to captivate players come November, so be sure you’re there to witness the twilight of the gods.

Goat Simulator 3

Have you ever wondered what life would be like if you were a goat with an appetite for fashion and destruction that just happened to have a complex physics engine applied to their daily activities of causing mass chaos? Probably not, but you’re definitely curious now. Goat Simulator 3 (don’t ask about Goat Simulator 2) is perhaps the weirdest, wildest sandbox game yet. As the titular goat, it’s up to you to do something. Anything, really.

The island of San Angora is your playground for goat-y and not very goat-like activities. Jetpacks! Vehicles! Explosions! Weird alien slime! Sports! Customizable Fashion! It’s all here for some reason. And what’s even better is that you can get together in a herd with your friends for multiplayer madness to lick, headbutt, and have a goat-tastic time.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me

Gaming’s premiere horror anthology series continues with a brand-new, standalone story. A group of young, naive documentary filmmakers receives an invite to a modern-day recreation of notorious conman-slash-serial-killer H.H. Holmes’s infamous “Murder Hotel”–a historical building laden with all manner of diabolical killing devices and traps. Inside the hotel, the film crew soon finds themselves as subjects in the palm of a sick mastermind determined to become the most notorious murderer of all time. Can your posse escape the “killing rooms” and survive a stay in the hell hotel? You can play through this story solo or share the terror with friends: enjoy simultaneous online co-operative play, or see which of you makes it out alive in controller-passing couch co-op. The Callisto Protocol

The survival horror genre returns to the cold, sprawling vastness of space in the Callisto Protocol. Headed up by Striking Distance Studio’s Glen Schofield, co-creator of the original Dead Space, this game takes you far, far away to Callisto, a moon orbiting the planet Jupiter, in the year 2320. Protagonist Jacob Lee is serving time at the Black Iron prison colony when a swarm of monstrous creatures begins appearing within the heavily fortified prison walls.

Something truly terrible is going on within these anguish-filled halls, and Jacob needs to discover the prison’s hidden secrets–and somehow use the limited resources he can scavenge to escape with his life. But even if you find a means to break out, you still have to contend with an ever-increasing army of rapidly evolving bio-horrors. Remember: they might not be able to hear you scream in space, but your downstairs neighbor will definitely hear you losing it when you’re playing The Callisto Protocol at 3am in the dark.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns

When we think of comic-based games, we tend to think of epic superpowered action-adventures. Marvel’s Midnight Suns, however, is taking its titular heroes into a different dimension: turn-based strategy. Developed by Firaxis, the masterminds behind the legendary X-Com series of games, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a massive crossover spectacular that offers deep, strategic gameplay that’s every bit as challenging and intense as Marvel action games.

Step into the shoes of the Hunter, an otherworldly demon slayer you create and customize as you work to prevent the resurrection of the elder god Cththon. Interact and forge alliances with legendary heroes like Wolverine, Iron Man, Blade, Captain America, and Spider-Man, then command them in battles that test mind and mettle alike. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion

Zack is back. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is a remake of the PSP classic that follows Cloud’s buddy and up-and-coming Soldier through the turbulent series of events that directly lead into the main story of Final Fantasy VII. A top-ranked Soldier named Genesis has deserted the organization, and Zack needs to track them down and find out what they’re up to and uncover some unpleasant Shinra corporate secrets in the process. Old and new players alike will find plenty to love in this comprehensive update, including fully-voiced cutscenes, completely re-done graphics, and a revised combat system that brings elements of Final Fantasy VII Remake’s ferocious fights into the mix. And, best of all, you get to spend quality time with Zack, one of FFVII’s most beloved (yet often “forgotten”) characters.

Auch wenn es draußen schon kühler wird, ist 2022 noch lange nicht vorbei, und die Fülle an bevorstehenden Titeln für PS4 und PS5 belegt das. Die nächsten Monate sollten mit die besten für PlayStation-Spieler werden; wir erwarten erstklassige Ego-Shooter-Action, von Kritikern hochgelobte Indie-Adventures, die Rückkehr beliebter JRPG-Klassiker und einige unserer Lieblingscharaktere, die neue Gaming-Grenzen erkunden. Und natürlich ist da noch dieses kleine Spiel namens God of War Ragnarök, das ebenfalls erscheinen wird. Das Jahr 2022 bringt uns noch eine Menge spannender neuer Spiele, also sehen wir uns mal die bemerkenswertesten Spiele an, die das Jahr abrunden werden.

Tunic

Ein klitzekleiner Fuchs in leuchtend grünem Gewand bricht in einem der meistdiskutierten Indie-Hits des Jahres zu einem großen Abenteuer auf. Tunic ist eine Herzensangelegenheit des Independent-Schöpfers Andrew Shouldice, der zusammen mit seinem talentierten Team ein liebenswertes isometrisches Action-Adventure erschaffen hat, das eine Hommage an die Klassiker des Genres darstellt und seine ganz eigene wunderschöne und einzigartige Welt bietet. Post Void

Hattet ihr schon mal einen augenschmerzenden, klopfenden Kopfschmerz, bei dem das Blut durch euren Kopf zu rauschen und pulsieren schien und euer Herz wie wild gepocht hat, aber … irgendwie war das super? Willkommen in der Welt von Post Void, einer Mischung aus klassischem Ego-Shooter und grellbunter, kontrastreicher Optik, die ein herrlich ungemütliches Ambiente erschafft. Die Neon-Szenerie und die traumhaft grotesken Gegner werden sich in eure Augäpfel einbrennen, während ihr so schnell wie möglich durch die Ego-Shooter-Levels im Retro-Stil saust. Denn wenn ihr nicht schnell genug auf den Beinen seid und alles noch schneller umlegt, dann schmilzt euer Gehirn (buchstäblich im Spiel, im übertragenen Sinne im echten Leben). Post Void ist ein wahrlich disharmonisches Erlebnis, das ihr so schnell nicht vergessen werdet. (Beachtet bitte, dass das Spiel nicht geeignet ist für Spieler, die Probleme mit blinkenden Lichtern haben.)

Valkyrie Elysium

In den nächsten Monaten wird es so einige Titel aus der nordischen Mythologie geben, angefangen mit dem Action-RPG-Revival Valkyrie Elysium von Square Enix. New Tales from the Borderlands

Etwas ist schräg im Borderlands-Universum … also noch schräger als sonst. New Tales from the Borderlands führt die Spieler zurück in eines der schrägsten und wildesten Settings der Gaming-Welt – in einem brandneuen Abenteuer auf Promethea. Anstatt dass Spieler Probleme einfach mit der Knarre lösen, bietet New Tales from the Borderlands eine verzweigte Handlung, bei der eure Dialogentscheidungen bestimmen, wohin die liebenswerten Trottel Anu, Fran und Octavia an einem extrem miesen Tag als Nächstes stolpern. Tja, mies für sie, aber nicht für euch – ihr werdet eure helle Freude haben an den bizarren Situationen, dem stets merkwürdigen Humor und den bissigen Dialogen, die Borderlands zu einem derart zeitlosen Hit gemacht haben, während sich unsere Möchtegernhelden in die nächste Zwickmühle manövrieren (und hoffentlich auch wieder heraus).

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

Call of Duty muss man Gamern definitiv nicht mehr vorstellen; die Reihe ist im Bereich Ego-Shooter die größte und einflussreichste überhaupt. In Modern Warfare II werden die Spieler einige der umfassendsten und spannendsten Überarbeitungen des klassischen COD-Gameplays erleben, die die Reihe je gesehen hat. Verbesserte KI, neue Bewegungsoptionen wie Schwimmen und Rutschen, bessere Fahrzeug-Interaktionen (jetzt kann man beispielsweise aus Fenstern schießen), realistischer Schaden und eine umfassende Waffenschmied-Überarbeitung, dank der Spieler ihre Waffenaufsätze anpassen und ihre perfekten Schusswaffen erstellen können.

CODs allseits beliebter Multiplayer-Modus wird ebenfalls aufgemotzt mit brandneuen Modi: Knockout, ein Wettbewerb, bei dem zwei Teams mit je 6 Spielern gegeneinander um ein wertvolles Paket kämpfen, und Gefangenenrettung, wo ein Team versucht, in eine schwer befestigte Anlage einzudringen und Geiseln zu befreien, während das andere ihr Revier verteidigt und versucht, das gegnerische Team zur Strecke zu bringen. Ob euch nun die Kampagne reizt oder ihr euch schleunigst in die Multiplayer-Wettkämpfe stürzen wollt, oder beides: Modern Warfare 2 bietet eine Menge spannender Inhalte.

Skull and Bones

Habt ihr das gehört? Die hohe See ruft … Das Meer fleht förmlich darum, erobert und geplündert zu werden! Wir schreiben das Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts, das Goldene Zeitalter der Piraterie, und der Indische Ozean ist voll mit Händlern, die exotische Waren aus dem Nahen Osten transportieren – erstklassige Ziele für die Piraten dieser Ära. Sonic Frontiers

Der berühmteste Igel der Welt muss wohl kaum näher vorgestellt werden. Sonics neuestes Abenteuer führt ihn und seine Clique auf die Starfall Islands, wo sie nach den Chaos Emeralds suchen. Der ewige Erzfeind Dr. Eggman hat beim Versuch, hinter die Geheimnisse einer verlorenen Zivilisation zu kommen, das hochmoderne Sicherheitssystem der Insel aktiviert und einen Riss zwischen der Inselwelt und dem digitalen Cyberspace-Reich geöffnet. Sonic Frontiers ist das erste Sonic-Spiel mit einer erkundbaren offenen Welt, in der Spieler verschiedene neue Bewegungs- und Angriffsfähigkeiten verwenden können, um mit völliger Bewegungsfreiheit durch wunderschöne Umgebungen zu sprinten, zu prügeln und zu krachen. Außerdem erwarten euch in den Cyberspace-Levels traditionelle lineare 3D-Plattform-Herausforderungen, die an klassische Sonic-Erlebnisse erinnern. God of War Ragnarök

Neue Fähigkeiten und Waffen, wie der Furchtlose Schild und der Steinmauerschild, sowie neue Beschwörungen für Atreus verleihen den Gefechten mehr Flair und Intensität denn je. God of War Ragnarök wird Spieler ab November fesseln, also verpasst auf keinen Fall die Götterdämmerung.

Ihr spielt die namensgebende Ziege und müsst etwas tun. Irgendetwas. Also eigentlich ganz egal was.

Die Insel von San Angora ist euer Königreich. Tobt euch aus mit ziegigen und nicht so ziegigen Aktivitäten. Jetpacks! Fahrzeuge! Explosionen! Abgefahrener Alienschleim! Sport! Anpassbare Mode! Alles hat irgendeinen Grund. Und besser noch, ihr könnt sogar eine Herde mit euren Freunden gründen, um im Multiplayer-Wahnsinn herumzulecken, Kopfstöße zu verteilen und eine ziegenmäßige Zeit zu genießen.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me

Die beste Horroranthologie-Reihe im Spielebereich geht weiter mit einer brandneuen, eigenständigen Geschichte. Eine Gruppe junger, naiver Dokumentarfilmemacher erhält eine Einladung in einen modernen Nachbau des Mörder-Hotels des berüchtigten Schwindlers/Serienmörders H. H. Holmes – ein historisches Gebäude randvoll mit allerlei teuflischen Mordgeräten und Fallen. Im Hotel findet sich die Filmcrew schnell als Marionetten an den Fäden eines kranken Genies wieder, das unbedingt der berüchtigtste Mörder aller Zeiten werden möchte. Kann euer Team den „Tötungszimmern“ entkommen und einen Aufenthalt im Höllenhotel überleben? Ihr könnt diese Geschichte alleine spielen oder den Schrecken mit Freunden teilen: Erlebt simultanes Online-Koop-Spiel oder gebt euch auf der Couch den Controller weiter und versucht zu überleben. Ganz egal, wie ihr spielt, euch erwartet der Aufenthalt eures Lebens, aber werden eure Protagonisten auch überleben?

The Callisto Protocol

Das Genre des Survival-Horrors kehrt in The Callisto Protocol zurück in die kalte, gewaltige Weite des Weltalls. Dieses Spiel unter Leitung von Striking Distance Studio und Glen Schofield, dem Mitschöpfer des ursprünglichen Dead Space, bringt euch in die fernen Weiten des Jupitermonds Callisto, im Jahr 2320. Protagonist Jacob Lee sitzt in der Gefängniskolonie Black Iron ein, als ein Schwarm monströser Kreaturen innerhalb der Mauern des schwer befestigten Komplexes auftaucht.

In diesen schreckenserfüllten Korridoren geht etwas wahrlich Grauenhaftes vor sich, und Jacob muss hinter die verborgenen Geheimnisse des Gefängnisses kommen und irgendwie die begrenzten Ressourcen nutzen, an die er gelangen kann, um lebend zu entkommen. Aber auch wenn ihr eine Möglichkeit zur Flucht findet, müsst ihr noch immer mit der ständig wachsenden Armee sich rapide weiterentwickelnder Biophagen-Kreaturen fertigwerden. Denkt dran: Im Weltall hört man euch vielleicht nicht schreien, aber der Nachbar unter euch hört es definitiv, wenn ihr um 3 Uhr morgens im Dunklen The Callisto Protocol spielt und völlig durchdreht.

Marvel‘s Midnight Suns

Wenn wir an Spiele denken, die auf Comics basieren, fallen uns zuerst epische Superkräfte-Action-Adventures ein. Marvel‘s Midnight Suns versetzt seine Titelhelden jedoch in eine andere Dimension: die der rundenbasierten Strategie. Dieses von Firaxis, den Schöpfern der legendären X-Com-Reihe, entwickelte Spiel ist ein massives Crossover-Spektakel, dessen tiefgehendes strategisches Gameplay so herausfordern und intensiv ist wie jedes Marvel-Actionspiel.

Tretet in die Fußstapfen des Jägers, eines Dämonenjägers aus einer anderen Dimension, den ihr erstellt und anpasst, während ihr gegen die Wiederauferstehung des alten Gottes Chthon ankämpft. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion

Zack ist wieder da. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion ist ein Remake des PSP-Klassikers, das Clouds Soldatenanwärter-Kumpel durch die turbulenten Ereignisse folgt, die direkt zur Hauptstory von Final Fantasy VII führen. Ein ranghoher Soldat namens Genesis hat der Organisation den Rücken gekehrt, und Zack muss ihn aufspüren und herausfinden, was er im Schilde führt; dabei enthüllt er einige unangenehme Unternehmensgeheimnisse von Shinra. Alte wie neue Spieler werden an diesem umfassenden Update jede Menge Spaß haben, denn es bietet vollständig eingesprochene Filmsequenzen, eine komplett überarbeitete Grafik und ein aktualisiertes Kampfsystem mit Elementen der erbitterten Kämpfe von Final Fantasy VII Remake. Und das Beste: Ihr dürft Zeit mit Zack verbringen, einem der beliebtesten (und doch häufig „vergessenen“) Charaktere von FFVII.

Valkyrie Elysium: your primer to the RPG series ahead of this week’s launch

In many respects, the Valkyrie series is synonymous with PlayStation. The acclaimed first two games – Valkyrie Profile and Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria – appeared on the PS1 and PS2 respectively. Now, after a 16 year absence from consoles, the series is back with Valkyrie Elysium.

The new action RPG features an evocative world inspired by Norse mythology, thrillingly fast-paced combat, stunning audio-visual presentation, and a dark, thought-provoking narrative. It’s a fantastic RPG that has its own very distinct vibe, and we can’t wait for you to play it.

While long-term Valkyrie fans are probably already exploring the mysteries of the game’s beautiful world via the recent demo, some of you may be wondering: what’s all the fuss about? Why’s this series so beloved?

With that in mind, and to celebrate the series’ return to its ancestral home on PlayStation, we thought it would be interesting to take you through the history of this revered franchise.

It all started way back in the year 1999…

1999: Valkyrie Profile – a classic is born

Just before the turn of the millennium, a new bold, new RPG was released in Japan: Valkyrie Profile.

By this point in the PlayStation’s life, the console had made a name for itself as a haven for RPGs, with multiple series, including Final Fantasy, having achieved new heights of popularity on this burgeoning platform.

Valkyrie Profile immediately stood out from the crowd. Developed by tri-Ace (the Star Ocean series), this was a game that dared to be different. It offered a distinctly original take on the genre, combining a stylish setting inspired by Norse mythology, innovative battle system and a narrative structure that rewarded players for their initiative and curiosity.

You took control of Lenneth – a recently awakened Valkyrie, who serves Odin and the pantheon of gods known as the ‘Aesir’. Lenneth is sent out to collect the souls of fallen warriors – known as Einherjar – to aid the gods in their war against the Vanir.

Over the course of her mission, she encounters many warriors – some worthy of joining the gods, others who fight by her side, and starts to piece together the mystery of the force that threatens the gods, and her life before rising as a Valkyrie.

Although it was just the first game, many of the elements that would come to define the Valkyrie series started right here including fast-paced, combo-based combat systems, the recruitable Einherjar, themes of life, death and identity and a richly melancholy tone.

Audiences responded positively to these elements, both in Japan and in North America where the game was released in 2000, and the game sold well. It’s often cited as one of the greats of the RPG genre – something that even more people would discover in 2006…

2006: Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth – the original returns

Fans had to wait a few years for more Valkyrie adventures, but in 2006 the original game made a return for the PSP as Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth.

The original PlayStation version had only been released in Japan and North America, but this perfectly portable port came out in Europe and Australasia too, making it the first time players in these regions could experience the game.

And fun fact: it’s back again! A PSP port of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth will release later this year for PS4 and PS5, available as either a bonus for owners of the Digital Deluxe Edition of Valkyrie Elysium or a standalone purchase.

2006: Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria – a worthy sequel

Also in 2006, the much-anticipated follow-up to Valkyrie Profile released for PlayStation 2: Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria.

Despite that prominent number in the name, the game’s actually set hundreds of years before the original game, and in an alternate timeline. It features many new characters and a new protagonist to control… or should that be two new protagonists?

The story focuses on the Valkyrie Silmeria and the Princess of Dipan, Alicia – two women trapped in the same body. Pursued by the Valkyrie Hrist, the two must work together to prevent a catastrophic war between their two realms.

The game built on many of the elements introduced in Valkyrie Profile, including new Einherjar, updated side-scrolling exploration, and strategic battles that combined the combo-based battle system with new movement options.

The game was a critical success, with reviewers praising its richly detailed world, super-fun combat system and stellar soundtrack by Motoi Sakuraba.

2008 / 2016: Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume and Valkyrie Anatomia – on the go gaming

The series returned to handheld devices for its next two entries: Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume (released in Japan in 2008, North America and Europe in 2009) and Valkyrie Anatomia, released on mobile in 2016. The former featured a dark, mature story of a young man named Wylfred, and his quest to destroy the Valkyrie Lenneth, who he blames for the loss of his father and his family’s subsequent misfortune. The latter is set in an alternate world to the original game. It follows a similar setup, with Lenneth charged with recruiting einherjar to fight for the gods.

2022: Valkyrie Elysium- the series comes home to PlayStation

…all of which brings us to now – and the long-awaited return of the Valkyrie Series to PS5 and PS4.

Valkyrie Elysium presents a completely original story, set in a world that teeters on the brink of destruction. Ragnarok – the end of all things – looms on the horizon. With the last of his strength, the All-Father Odin creates a Valkyrie to become an emissary of redemption. Her task: save this doomed world. Descending to the land below, this brave warrior encounters many challenges as she starts to discover the truth behind its impending demise. What will she think of this world… and what end will she choose for it?

The game presents a fresh take on the series that combines many of the series’ defining elements with exciting new ideas. For example, the combat system fuses series stables like finishing moves and combos, with brand new real-time action combat. Recruitable Einherjar are also present and correct and it’s all scored with a remarkable soundtrack by long-time series composer Motoi Sakuraba.

And that ends this very quick run through of the Valkyrie series. Of course, you don’t need to have played any of the other games to enjoy Valkyrie Elysium – it’s a completely standalone title that draws on the rich legacy of the series to create a new adventure that anyone can enjoy.

Valkyrie Elysium: Wir präsentieren euch die RPG-Reihe noch vor Release diese Woche

Die Valkyrie-Reihe ist in vielerlei Hinsicht eng mit dem Begriff „PlayStation“ verbunden. Die ersten beiden hochgelobten Spiele, Valkyrie Profile und Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, erschienen für PS1 bzw. PS2. Jetzt, nach 16-jähriger Konsolen-Abstinenz, kehrt die Reihe mit Valkyrie Elysium zurück.

Das neue Action-RPG birgt eine bewegende, an die nordische Mythologie angelehnte Welt, rasante, mitreißende Kämpfe, eine wunderschöne audiovisuelle Darstellung sowie eine düstere Geschichte, die zum Nachdenken anregt. Es ist ein fantastisches RPG mit ganz eigenem Vibe und wir können eure Reaktion kaum erwarten.

Während langjährige Valkyrie-Fans die Mysterien der schönen Welt bestimmt längst mithilfe der kürzlich erschienenen Demo erkundet haben, fragen sich einige von euch sicher, was der ganze Hype eigentlich soll. Warum ist die Reihe so beliebt?

Um diese Fragen zu beantworten – und um die Rückkehr der Reihe auf ihr ursprüngliches Zuhause, PlayStation, zu feiern – dachten wir uns, wir geben euch einen kleinen Überblick über die Historie des beliebten Franchise.

Alles begann im Jahr 1999 …

1999: Valkyrie Profile – die Entstehung eines Klassikers

Kurz vor der Jahrtausendwende erschien in Japan ein neues gewagtes RPG: Valkyrie Profile.

Schon damals hatte sich PlayStation als solide Plattform für RPGs einen Namen gemacht. Mehrere Spielreihen, darunter z. B. Final Fantasy, hatten neue Sphären der Popularität erreicht.

Trotzdem stach Valkyrie Profile aus der Masse heraus. Entwickelt von tri-Ace (die „Star Ocean“-Reihe), wagte es dieses Spiel, anders zu sein. Es bot eine überaus originelle Sichtweise auf das Genre, indem es ein stilvolles, von der nordischen Mythologie inspiriertes Setting, ein innovatives Kampfsystem und eine Erzählstruktur bot, die Spielereigenschaften wie Einsatz und Neugier belohnte.

Das Spiel handelte von Lenneth, einer kurz zuvor erwachten Walküre im Dienste Odins und anderer Götter, gemeinhin als Asen bekannt. Lenneth wird ausgesandt, die Seelen gefallener Krieger, genannt Einherjar, einzusammeln, um die Götter im Krieg gegen die Vanir zu unterstützen.

Im Verlauf der Mission trifft sie auf zahlreiche Krieger – manche von ihnen würdig, sich den Göttern anzuschließen, und andere, die an ihrer Seite kämpfen – und enthüllt dabei Stück für Stück das Geheimnis um die mysteriöse Macht, die die Götter und ihr eigenes Leben schon bedrohte, noch bevor sie zur Walküre wurde.

Schon der erste Teil wies viele der Elemente auf, welche die Valkyrie-Reihe später definiere sollten – zum Beispiel das rasante, kombobasierte Kampfsystem, die rekrutierbaren Einherjar, eine wunderbar melancholische Atmosphäre sowie ein ernster Blick auf wichtige Themen wie Leben, Tod und Identität.

Sowohl in Japan als auch Nordamerika, wo das Spiel im Jahr 2000 erschien, gefielen dem Publikum diese Elemente offenbar, denn die Verkaufszahlen waren gut. Der Titel wird oft als einer der großartigsten des RPG-Genres insgesamt bezeichnet – eine Tatsache, die im Jahr 2006 noch mehr Gamer für sich entdecken sollten …

2006: Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth – Das Original kehrt zurück

Die Fans mussten mehrere Jahre auf neue Valkyrie-Abenteuer warten, aber 2006 kehrte das Original als Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth auf PSP zurück.

Die erste PlayStation-Version war nur in Japan und Nordamerika erschienen, aber diese tragbare Variante kam auch in Europa und Australasien heraus und war damit die Erste, die Gamer dieser Regionen spielen konnten.

Und, Überraschung! Es ist wieder da! Eine portierte Version von Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth für PSP wird noch dieses Jahr für PS4 und PS5 erscheinen, entweder als Bonus für Besitzer der Digital Deluxe Edition von Valkyrie Elysium oder durch separaten Kauf.

2006: Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria – ein würdiger Nachfolger

Darüber hinaus erschien 2006 der heiß ersehnte Nachfolger mit dem Titel Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria für PlayStation 2.

Trotz der vielen Zweien spielt dieser Titel hunderte Jahre vor dem Original und außerdem in einer alternativen Zeit. Er beinhaltet viele neue Figuren und eine neue Protagonistin … oder besser gesagt zwei.

Die Story dreht sich nämlich sowohl um die Walküre Silmeria als auch um Alicia, Prinzessin von Dipan – zwei Frauen im selben Körper. Verfolgt von der Walküre Hrist, müssen sie zusammenarbeiten, um einen verheerenden Krieg zwischen ihren beiden Reichen zu verhindern.

Das Spiel enthält viele Elemente aus Valkyrie Profile, wie die Einherjar, verbessertes Sidescrolling und strategische Schlachten mit erweiterten Bewegungsoptionen für das kombobasierte Kampfsystem.

Es wurde von der Kritik für seine reich mit Details ausgestattete Welt, das einnehmende Kampfsystem und den großartigen Soundtrack von Motoi Sakuraba sehr gelobt.

2008/2016: Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume und Valkyrie Anatomia – Gaming on the Go

Die nächsten beiden Titel erschienen für Handheld-Geräte: Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume (Japan: 2008, Nordamerika und Europa: 2009) und Valkyrie Anatomia, 2016 für Mobilgeräte veröffentlicht. Der erste Titel erzählt die finstere, reife Story eines jungen Mannes namens Wylfred, der sich an der Walküre Lenneth rächen will, die er für den Tod seines Vaters und das daraus folgende Pech seiner Sippe verantwortlich macht. Der zweite spielt in einer alternativen Realität des allerersten Spiels der Valkyrie-Reihe mit ähnlichem Setup: Lenneth soll für die Götter Einherjar rekrutieren.

2022: Valkyrie Elysium – die Reihe kehrt zurück nach Hause auf PlayStation

Und schon sind wir in der heutigen Zeit und damit bei der heißersehnten Rückkehr der Valkyrie-Reihe auf PS5 und PS4.

Valkyrie Elysium bietet eine ganz neue Geschichte, angesiedelt in einer Welt, die kurz vor der Zerstörung steht. Ragnarok – das Ende aller Tage – steht unmittelbar bevor. Mit letzter Kraft erschafft Allvater Odin eine Walküre, die er zur Abgesandten der Erlösung erklärt. Ihre Aufgabe: Die vermeintlich verlorene Welt zu retten. Die mutige Kriegerin steigt auf das Land hinab und muss sich zahlreichen Herausforderungen stellen, während sie gleichzeitig versucht, die Wahrheit hinter dem bevorstehenden Untergang zu ergründen. Was denkt sie über die Welt … und welches Ende wird sie ihr bescheren?

Das Spiel wirft ein neues Licht auf die Reihe, die viele markante Elemente der bisherigen Titel mit aufregenden neuen Ideen kombiniert. Zum Beispiel vereint das Kampfsystem reihentypische Faktoren wie Finisher-Moves und Kombos mit brandneuen Actiongefechten in Echtzeit. Auch die allseits bekannten rekrutierbaren Einherjar kommen wieder vor, und über allem erklingt ein bemerkenswerter Soundtrack von Komponist Motoi Sakuraba, der schon die Musik für die anderen Titel lieferte.

Im neuesten State of Play von PlayStation konnten wir Valkyrie Elysium präsentieren, den Neuzugang in der hochgelobten Valkyrie-Reihe.

Die Valkyrie-Reihe zeigt das Ende der Menschheit und ihr Treffen mit den Göttern in einer einzigartigen Welt, die von der nordischen Mythologie inspiriert wurde.

Dieses spannende neue Action-RPG bringt die Reihe mit einem brandneuen, eigenständigen Abenteuer auf PS5 und PS4.

Was ist Valkyrie Elysium?

Valkyrie Elysium ist ein Action-RPG mit einer epischen Story, wunderschönen Umgebungen und einem neuen, schnellen Kampfsystem, das Strategie, Action und ein einzigartiges Kombo-System kombiniert, das euer Denk- und Reaktionsvermögen auf die Probe stellt.

Das Gameplay von Valkyrie Elysium

Valkyrie Elysium baut auch Elemente des klassischen Gameplays der Valkyrie-Reihe ein, wie die Einherjar, rekrutierbare Krieger, die sich der Heldin anschließen und an ihrer Seite kämpfen, wenn sie gerufen werden. Außerdem ist es ein wunderschönes Spiel, mit unglaublichem Design, das den Geist der Reihe auf aufregende, moderne Art einfängt. Auf PS5 läuft es in 4K und 60 FPS und erschafft so ein Abenteuer, das wahnsinnig gut aussieht und sich auch so anfühlt.

Und wir müssen natürlich die Musik erwähnen. Motoi Sakuraba, der Komponist der Reihe, ist wieder mit dabei und am atemberaubenden Soundtrack des Spiels beteiligt. Rollenspiele sind immer besser mit einem starken Soundtrack, und dieser wird … na ja, Musik in euren Ohren sein.

Erscheint später in diesem Jahr

Valkyrie Elysium wird 2022 für PS5 und PS4 veröffentlicht. Wir haben bald weitere Informationen zur triumphalen Rückkehr von Valkyrie in diesem Jahr, also haltet die Augen offen!
