    Reading Time: 2 minutes

I know: you’ve seen a bajillion RetroPie implementations before, and a bajillion casemods to go with them. But this one’s so hopelessly, magnificently splendid that we felt we had to share. Magnetic levitation. It’s not just for trains and frogs.

This Zelda casemod, covered with engraved pine from the forests of Hyrule and shiny brass mouldings hammered by…dwarves or something, would be gorgeous as-is. The levitating, mirrored Triforce twizzling away on top is the icing on the cake; and a very lovely cake it is too. Here’s some video (in Spanish, with English subtitles) from Tuberviejuner in Spain, walking you through the build.

Raspberry pi Zelda mod: Magic Berry WindWaker The Legend of Zelda by Makomod & Tuberviejuner alucinad con el triforce levitador.

This magical piece of work is by MakoMod, a case modder who splits his time between Barcelona and Texas. There’s a Pi inside running RetroPie, and a separate electromagnetic device levitating the Triforce up top. If you’re interested in incorporating something like this into one of your own builds, there are two ways to go: make your own from scratch, as DrewPaul Designs has done here, or buy a pre-built kit.

If you get in there quickly, you’ve a chance to own this one-off case: MakoMod is auctioning it on eBay. You’ve got until July 14 2018 to bid – good luck!

  • Weekend Project: Take Flight With This 3D Printed V911 Micro Flying Wing

Weekend Project: Take Flight With This 3D Printed V911 Micro Flying Wing

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

How’s the local weather forecast looking this weekend? Why not 3D print your own micro flying wing to soar beyond the kites and frisbees at the park. Designed by Thingiverse user drcameron, this RC wing attachment will have you soaring through blue skies with style.

With projects like OpenRC taking the 3D printing community by storm, we’re seeing more and more examples of how this technology can be used to create and upgrade remote-controlled vehicles. And it’s no surprise why makers are fawning over these types of projects; they’re fun, functional and showcase the potential that even desktop 3D printing has for manufacturing useful things.

And so, for today’s Weekend Project, we’ll be taking a look at a 3D printed V911 Micro Flying Wing. Designed by Thingiverse user drcameron, his project was recently featured on the front page of the popular 3D model repository. Using a few various parts from an old RC plane, you can add these 3D printed wings and take flight. The ribbed wing design has already been tried and tested by the designer, and it proved to be a soaring success.

Let’s take a quick look at what you need to make your own high-flying RC plane.

3D Printed Micro Flying Wing: What You Need

The STL files for the wings are freely available on Thingiverse. You can download them here. Other than that, here are the components you need to put this project into the air.

Of course, if you have some RC plane parts laying around the garage, you might be able to source these components for this project. Otherwise, you can either find the individual parts above or buy an old plane and obtain what you need from there.

3D Printed Micro Flying Wing: Putting it Together

The 3D printing process is quite easy, as the wings come in two separate parts and snap directly together. It might take some angling on your slicer in order to fit the model on your 3D printer’s bed, but the project creator was able to print it on a Monoprice Maker Select V2, which has a build volume of 200 x 200 x 180 mm. The teacher and maker also scaled down this model of a control horn by 75 percent, making it the perfect fit for the micro wings.

The wings were printed with two walls and zero top and bottom layers. Using Cura, drcameron used the grid pattern to create the lightweight inner structure. He also notes that both wings should be oriented the same way to ensure that the grid pattern is uniform across both prints.

After the printing process is complete, you should wrap the wings in packing tape and add foam to the tips of the winglets. He then attached the receiver brick and motor using hot glue. Although the maker doesn’t go into the electronics assembly in his Thingiverse post, he does share a link to this forum for those unfamiliar with this process.

All in all, this is a great project to show everyone just why 3D printing is so useful, and for parents looking to introduce a bit of maker ingenuity to their children. You can play around and customize this project to fit your style, and become the most popular person at the park once you start flying this RC plane around.

  • Weekend Project: 3D Printed NeoPixel Butterfly Ring That Flutters with Light

Weekend Project: 3D Printed NeoPixel Butterfly Ring That Flutters with Light

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Want a 3D printing project that will hone your design and circuitry skills, all while giving you a butterfly ring that flutters with light? Then break out of that cocoon and build yourself this 3D printed NeoPixel butterfly ring.

When used as a standalone technology, 3D printing is capable of producing some amazing trinkets, jewelry and other wearable accessories. But when fused with electronics, the possibilities of what you can make grows exponentially. One common and easy-to-learn path you can take on your maker quest is with Arduino circuit boards and LED lights.

But for the novice, it might seem like a daunting task to learn soldering circuitry and 3D design. In reality, it’s less demanding than you might expect, and this recent Instructables project will help you learn all the nitty gritty details. By the time you finish this lesson, you’ll have yourself 3D printed NeoPixel butterfly ring that will brighten up your weekend!

Let’s take a closer look at this informative and fun project.

3D Printed NeoPixel Butterfly Ring: What You Need?

If you want to create your own 3D printed butterfly ring, you’ll need to acquire some electronic components and tools. Here’s what you need:

The STL files for the butterfly and NeoPixel holder are available on the Instructables post.

3D Printed NeoPixel Butterfly Ring: Putting it Together

If you want to design your own butterfly, the circuits Instructables post shares comprehensive steps on how to design both the ring and LED holder on TinkerCAD. It also shows you how to create a circuit with an Arduino Uno and NeoPixel Ring, how to start coding with the NeoPixel library and programming your LED to go into rainbow mode. For time’s sake, we’ll jump straight into the 3D printing process, but if you’re interested in learning how to do everything from scratch, start from the top of the project’s Instructables page.

The NeoPixel Butterfly Ring only requires two 3D printed parts: the butterfly and the NeoPixel holder. Both are 3D printed with 100 percent infill, the holder with supports. If you want to maximize the light the shines through the butterfly, look into utilizing translucent or white PLA filament.

The next step is to put together the circuit and 3D printed holder, snuggly sandwiching the holder on top of the Arduino Uno. With the PWR and GND pins of the NeoPixel Ring facing downward, situate it around the 3D printed holder close to the “+” and “-” indicators.

If you look at the 3D printed holder, you’ll notice three holes for you to connect the NeoPixel ring to Arduino. Do the following:  “Insert one end of a red jumper wire into the + hole of the holder. Make sure it’s fully inserted so that it makes a connection with the Arduino Uno 5V pin. Insert one end of a black jumper wire into the – hole of the holder. Make sure it’s fully inserted so that it makes a connection with the GND (Ground) pin of the Arduino.”

After stripping the wire ends, it’s finally time to solder the connections, each step is laid out in detail on the Instructables page. Finally, program the Arduino with the rainbow code and attach the butterfly! There you have it, time to let your finger flutter!

This project is multi-faceted depending on your experience level and free time. You can use the tutorials to learn more about using TinkerCAD and Arduino, or, you can just 3D print and solder away until you have a custom piece of jewelry. Happy tinkering!

  • Aether Launches Artificial Intelligence 3D Organ Printing Software

Aether Launches Artificial Intelligence 3D Organ Printing Software

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The development could be a significant boost for on-site 3D organ printing at hospitals and research facilities.

3D organ printing has just been given a significant boost thanks an Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered medical imaging software developed by Aether.

The new software powers automatic segmentation of organs and tissues. It further assists in easy converting of single or multi-material printable 3D files.

To test the new software, the company announced a collaboration with Jang Laboratory at Harvard Medical School, US. Clinicians at the school will be able to help feedback and develop the software for public release.

“It’s great that we can say Aether 1 is the only all-in-one 3D bioprinter with the multi-tool capabilities and automation required for organ printing. the truth is a big piece was still missing from the puzzle,” explained Ryan Franks, CEO at Aether.

“Once we learned AI is the only way bioprinting can reach its full potential, we software that would bridge the gap between science-fiction and reality. Aether’s medical imaging AI will be a quantum leap forward. [We] can’t wait to get this software out there and experience the impact it has on the medical field.”

The Automatic Segmentation and Reconstruction (“ASAR”) process provides deep learning models. These can be combined with AI and image processing techniques. Meanwhile, ASAR lets users segment organs and tissues. Researchers can then reconstruct them as digital 3D models before using them for fabrication or other applications.

The full process is automated and does not require any human intervention at all.

Additionally, the advantage of ASAR is that it reduces the time it takes to go from medical image to printable organ.

Aether adds that it has now successfully segmented various organ types with high accuracy across various CT scan datasets. It will try to extend its capabilities toward all organ and tissue types across MRI, X-ray and angiogram technologies.

Printable organs provide an alternative for trainee surgeons and future transplants

3D printed organs offer significant advantages for trainee doctors and surgeons to test their skills on. The more realistic nature of the organs accurately reflects tissue, bone, fat, and blood. This should also help minimize surgical errors.

Aether hopes that hospitals will also be able to 3D print organs on demand for use in transplants. This will help to eliminate waiting lists.

Currently, available imaging software can be confusing and challenging to learn. Aether’s AI medical imaging software challenges this by providing a much simpler interface that is more intuitive to use.

By incorporating AI, the software provides faster speeds of medical image batch processing. In return, this can boost the efficiency of doctors and researchers.

The company adds that its AI 3D bioprinting platform is significantly cheaper to use and therefore provides a great alternative for many hospitals that have organ fabrication systems on-site.

For its collaboration with the Jang Laboratory, Aether will provide a bioprinter, AI, and bio-inks as part of an integrated system to deliver organ printing at site.

The partnership will help train Aether’s AI models and guide future software developments.

    Dr. Hae Lin Jang said:

“I am excited to participate in the development of an integrated organ printing system and am looking forward to seeing how a multi-tool bioprinter with AI can enhance our research. I believe this is a revolutionary platform, and hope my advisory role will help Aether empower the worldwide research community.”

  • Weekend Project: 3D Print Your Own Animated Physics Toy

Weekend Project: 3D Print Your Own Animated Physics Toy

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Looking for an awesomely interactive project to 3D print this weekend? The Ruiz Brothers and Phillip Burgess have shared Animated LED Sand, a DIY physics toy featured on Adafruit.

Although the laws of physics are an integral part to our understanding of the nature and universe that surrounds us, learning about Newton’s laws from a textbook can be a daunting and exasperating task. Instead, why not enjoy the science of matter and energy with an interactive toy you can 3D print yourself!

The Animated LED Sand device is an incredibly simple, yet awe-inspiring DIY toy that will entertain kids and adults alike. Using an LED matrix that displays little grains of sand, this 3D printable toy interacts with motion and acts as if it’s under the influence of gravity.

This Weekend Project, created by the Ruiz Brothers and Phillip Burgess, is currently featured on Adafruit. We’ll give you a quick recap of the project, and show you how to make the complexities of physics more fun.

Animated LED Sand Toy: What Do You Need?

If you’re interested in assembling your own 3D printed physics toy, most of the supplies can be purchased from Adafruit. Here’s what you’ll need:

Animated LED Sand: Putting it all Together

Once you have your supplies, it’s time to dig into the circuitry and coding for the Animated LED Sand. You’ll need to connect the slide switch to the Feather Board, and will need to be 70mm for the GND and 50mm for the EN pin.

The CharliePlex Featherwing also connects directly to the board, and requires the connections for the SDA and SCL wires to be 70 mm long. Meanwhile, the 3V and GND connections can be 80mm long.

Lastly, the LIS3DH connects to the top of the Feather (via the 3d printed mount), and will need to be 40mm long for all connections. If you’re more of a visual learner, Adafruit shares a circuit digram to help you connect the various electronic components together (pictured below).

In order to use the LED Sand sketch, you’ll need to download the latest version of Arduino IDE. If you’re unfamiliar with Arduino, the Ruiz Brothers suggests going over introductory tutorials. There are also a few libraries that will need to be installed onto Arduino IDE.

The code for this DIY physics toy, written by Burgess, can be found on the Adafruit project page.

The 3D printed enclosure comes in a handful of relatively easy to print files. You can download the STL files from Thingiverse. There is a dome version, which teeters back and forth on a surface, or a gimbal version, which keeps the toy in constant spin.

Lastly, you’ll need to solder the electronic components together and assemble the Animated LED Sand toy. This project showcases an interesting relationship between electronics and 3D printing, using 3D printed spacers and mounts to keep everything in check.

If you’re interested in building this DIY Physics Toy over the weekend, you can view the full assembly instructions here. Be sure to check out the video below for more information and maker inspiration.

Frantics, a New PlayLink Party Game, Launches Today on PS4

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

    Hi there!

I am super excited about introducing you all to Frantics, the new PlayLink party game that we at NapNok Games are releasing today. It is a multiplayer party game, but since this is a PlayLink game, instead of using DualShock 4 wireless controllers, you simply download the game’s companion app and you’ll be able to control the game with your smartphone or tablet device. This makes playing Frantics super simple and accessible, while still being massively competitive and fun!

    Frantics

Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to welcome you to Frantics – it is a simple game of bonding, brawling and backstabbery.

Frantics is a party game, in which you and up to three of your mates can bash, bite, race, push, squash and smack each other, but all with a little… social twist. Let me give you a few examples.

One of my favorite games in Frantics is called Kings of the Hill. The rules are quite simple, shoot yourself out of a cannon to reach a platform, use your handy baseball bat to whack other animals down from said platform and score a point. Now, the problem is that you can only score a point if there are two and only two animals standing on the platform, so you need to team up with someone else to win. Who do you team up with? Well that is up to you, some players try to build alliances, others constantly switch partners, while others again, stay behind and try to snipe in for a victory. It is wonderful to watch, since trust is so fragile when you’re holding a baseball bat in your hand.

    Frantics

    FranticsFrantics

    Frantics

Another favorite of mine is Hot Rod Heroes — a straightforward racing game where you try to reach the finish line first in a homemade Hot Rod. The kicker is that you are not building your own car, no no, that would be too easy. You take turns before the race starts distributing car parts to each other, and I must say, some of these parts are… quite interesting. Who would you hand the square wheels to? Or the rocket engine?

And I’d be remiss not to mention Icicle Pickle, another last-animal-standing game, but unique in that players can jump up and piggyback ride other animals for victory. Friendless Runner is… an endless runner but with other players running around you, and oh boy is that a mess! Dough Knights is a unicycle lancing game where you pierce doughnuts – and each other. One of the doughnuts is secretly explosive and you have to pass it to another player if you pick it up.

All this and much more is packed into Frantics, launching today at PlayStation Store!

  • Tips for Taking on Outbreak, Rainbow Six Siege’s New Co-op Event

Tips for Taking on Outbreak, Rainbow Six Siege’s New Co-op Event

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Outbreak is a special event coming soon to Rainbow Six Siege to challenge your Operators with adversaries unlike anything they’ve seen before. From March 6 to April 3, Siege owners with a PS Plus subscription will be able to play Outbreak for free and take on the deadly extraterrestrial parasite wreaking havoc on the populace of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. A sinister array of enemies will test you at every turn across the expansive new levels, so here are some tips straight from the Rainbow Six developers to help you take them on.

Rainbow Six Siege: OutbreakRainbow Six Siege: Outbreak

    Assemble Your Crew

Outbreak is a co-op event for up to three players, and at the start of each match, you’ll have to choose from a select group of Operators with the weapons and gadgets to give you an edge against your enemies. Having an Operator with the ability to revive down-but-not-out teammates is a big help, so consider running Doc for his Stim Pistol, or Finka, the new Operator from Operation Chimera, for her team-buffing Adrenal Surge. Note that shotguns, while generally relied on for their wall-destroying power in competitive play, are very effective against Outbreak foes. And for those of you looking for a good excuse to put Tachanka’s Mounted LMG into play, Outbreak suits this fan-favorite quite nicely.

    Don’t Summon the Swarm

There are plenty of times in which hordes of enemies will descend upon you in Outbreak, leaving you with no choice but to go loud, but don’t underestimate the value of keeping things quiet when you can. Equipping a suppressor can help you avoid alerting enemies to your presence, and even explosive Breacher foes can be dispatched quietly with a suppressed headshot. The stealthy approach is even more powerful on Pandemic, Outbreak’s harder difficulty setting, where the enemies are more numerous and friendly fire is enabled.

    Rainbow Six Siege: Outbreak

The Who’s Who of Mutated Abominations

There are five unique enemy types in Outbreak, and each will try to lay their own particular brand of hurt on you. Let’s get acquainted.

Grunt: The most numerous foe by far, Grunts swarm you relentlessly once they are alerted to your presence. Headshots are best, though if you wound them in close quarters, you may see a prompt to execute a quick melee takedown. I suggest you follow this prompt.

Breacher: Long spikes and bright yellow bubbles adorn the backs of these nimble enemies who love nothing more than to get near your or your barricades and explode. Shoot them near other enemies for collateral damage, and if they get close to you, melee them before shooting so you don’t become collateral damage yourself.

Rooter: They burrow underground and pop up all over the place, but they want to trap you in one spot with spiked roots? Talk about a dangerous double standard. Shoot them to release their hold on you before the Grunts close in.

Apex: These spooky floating enemies will hit you from afar with blasts of vision-obscuring goop, but the real threat they pose is the faster, tougher enemies they spawn into the battle. Take them out quickly.

Smasher: This hulking beast is all but invulnerable, and more than happy to clobber you through walls or smash through walls in order to clobber you. Create a crossfire with your team so that while one player runs from it, the others can shoot the weak spot on its back. If you’re feeling daring, shoot it in the face to taunt it into charging you, then step aside quickly, wait for it to run into an obstacle and fall to its knees, then melee it in the weak spot for, you guessed it, massive damage.

Rainbow Six Siege: OutbreakRainbow Six Siege: Outbreak

The Best Defense is a Good Defense

As you work your way toward uncovering the mysteries of Outbreak and quelling the carnage, you’ll be ordered to defend some objectives against the advancing throngs. Look around for reinforced walls and deploy them to close off your flanks and limit the amount of angles you have to cover. You’ll still need to keep an eye on them, because Breachers can destroy normal and reinforced walls, as well as barricades; look for the telltale yellow bubbles coming through a wall and try to destroy Breachers before they do their thing. Set up barricades at all doors and windows, but melee a hole in them at head height. This will allow you to headshot Grunts without letting them get too close. And if your objective gets swarmed, remember that smoke grenades will temporarily confuse your enemies and stop their attacks, giving you time to clear them out.

Outbreak is coming to Rainbow Six Siege from March 6 to April 3, and special rewards await PlayStation owners who persevere and conquer its toughest challenges. Take these tips, relay them to your squad, and get ready to take on this nefarious new challenge.

  • Paul George + PlayStation: Introducing the PG-2 PlayStation Colorway

Paul George + PlayStation: Introducing the PG-2 PlayStation Colorway

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

If you know me, you know my game never stops. Whether I’m at home or on the road, I’m always playing on my PS4, which is why I’m excited to announce my official collaboration between Nike Basketball and PlayStation with the PG-2 “PlayStation” colorway.

    Nike PG-2 PlayStation colorway

Nike PG-2 PlayStation colorwayNike PG-2 PlayStation colorway

Just like basketball, I’ve had a knack for video games since I was a kid. When I was 8 or 9, I used to amaze my uncle and all his friends by consistently beating them in all the sports games we’d play. And if I saw something cool while I was playing, I’d go outside and try it out on the court or the field. So in a way, sports and video games were always feeding off one another to me.

This collaboration has been a long time coming. Ask me what my favorite PlayStation memory is and I’ll tell you it’s when my dad got me a PS2 for Christmas. I’d been dropping hints left and right because I knew that was it. That was the next big thing. You could say the same with Nike. As a kid, I’d make sketches of what I wanted my Nike shoes to look like because it’s something I’ve always wanted to be a part of. Now I have the opportunity to make something very special and personal to me with the help of two of my favorite brands.

    Nike PG-2 PlayStation colorway

Working with designers from both Nike and PlayStation, we took inspiration from the console’s DualShock 4 controller and the iconic symbols that have been a part of every PlayStation product to create a colorway that honored my game both on and off the court.

A few interesting things that you should know about the colorway:

    • The tongues of the shoe sport the PG and PlayStation logos, which illuminate and pulsate blue just like when turning on the console
    • The back heel of the left shoe has a unique barcode that contains a PSN voucher code, which can be redeemed at PlayStation Store for a Paul George Dynamic Theme for your PS4
    • The colors of the sneaker pay homage to the buttons on the DualShock 4 controller
    • The iconic PlayStation symbols are embossed in patent leather on each shoe
    • The look of the PG Dynamic Theme is reflected in the sock liner on each shoe

I consider myself one of the biggest gamers in the NBA. Ever since getting my PS2 for Christmas as a kid, my game has gone with me wherever I go, so working with PlayStation was something that felt inevitable.

The PG2 “PlayStation” colorway drops globally on February 10, 2018. For more information on the release, download the Nike SNKRS app.

  • The Getaway Turns 15: A Look Back With the Team Behind the PS2 Hit

The Getaway Turns 15: A Look Back With the Team Behind the PS2 Hit

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

“Morning, sunshine. Good to see ya again. We’re going to play a little game…”

When is a movie more than a movie? That was the question posed back in 2002 when an intense, memorable live-action promo helped pioneering open-world crime saga The Getaway jostle its way onto PlayStation 2. Sure, the popularity of the British gangster movie had been reinvigorated by Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels but that kind of widescreen Cockney swagger was very new to the world of video games.

Whereas Hollywood-grade production values are taken for granted in AAA video game development today, that gruff two minute promo was a revelation, promising an all-action, open-world London, recreated on your TV screen thanks to the power of PS2.

So, it only seems fitting that we celebrate The Getaway’s 15th anniversary with a few of the original developers from what was Team Soho (now Sony London Studio) to get beneath the gritty fingernails of a PlayStation classic…

    London calling

“I’m not sure any of us actually knew what we were getting ourselves into,” remembers Gavin Moore, The Getaway’s Director of Animation (now Creative Director at Sony Japan Studio). It’s easy to see why – before it became a massive, photorealistic game map taking in 10 square miles of London, The Getaway started off as a spiritual successor to PS one hit Porsche Challenge.

Merging that game’s open-world driving concept with The Italian Job-inspired gameplay (nicknamed “Minis in a Field”), the core idea took shape.

“It was a mission-based game where you were a getaway driver for hire on different robberies around the world,” explains Gavin. “Brendan McNamara, head of the studio, saw the potential of a massive, narrative-driven open world on PlayStation 2 and suddenly a small heist/getaway driver game became a giant gangster action movie where the real star was the city it was set in, London.”

    The Getaway

    The Getaway

“Hang on lads, I’ve got a great idea…”

As the team expanded to over 60 people, so did the technology required to fulfil their ideas.

“We didn’t want to break the recreation of London into areas and impose loading times,” says Gavin. “We wanted the player to remain immersed in the game. But there was no hard drive on the PS2 and no way to load the whole city into memory.

“So the engine was completely rewritten to stream geometry and textures of areas that the player was close to, which was ground-breaking at the time. To load and stream the data that fast put a lot of pressure on the PS2 disc drive, so the data for the city was burnt onto the disc in sequential order to reduce the strain.”

    The Getaway

Similarly, the game was also one of the few titles at the time to favor a minimalist on-screen user interface. There was no visible health bar, ammo counter or map, meaning you had to pay careful attention to subtle cues like the blinking indicators on the back of the car to guide you to your destination.

“I loved the opening and how you transitioned straight from intro to gameplay,” says Will Burdon, Technical Director (now at Sony London Studio). “This wasn’t a typical game with loads of cluttered graphics on the screen. It just felt very cinematic from start to finish – it was hard work, but ultimately very rewarding.”

When black suits meet blue uniforms

There were long nights involved to make the action adventure look and feel the part, but there were also plenty of memorable moments during its development. It was the first time any game studio had done full face, body and voice motion capture of seven actors at once and Gavin remembers some of the more comedic elements of being part of such a new set up.

The GetawayActor Ricky Hards in full prosthetic mask, as gangster Charlie Jolson

The GetawayActor and model Anna Edwards, as female assassin for hire Yasmin

“All of the actors who played the gangsters in the game were big men,” he recounts. “But I used to have a good laugh – in secret, of course – watching them in the motion capture studio acting out intense, often violent scenes, with a lot of colorful language… dressed in these skin tight, black suits.”

And then there were the jokes that came with the live action commercial, which was given a VIP movie-style premiere at Leicester Square’s Odeon cinema.

“I was dressed as a police woman and riding around in one of the stunt cars in-between takes on London Bridge,” recalls animator Tara Saunders, now Head of Studio Operations at London Studio.

“We pulled alongside a van driver who was drinking from a soft drink bottle and shouted ‘you shouldn’t drink and drive’. The van driver looked at me in uniform and gushed ‘I’m really sorry ma’am, I won’t do it again’. Then we sped off with blue lights to do the chase sequence!”

A London landmark played across the world

The Getaway went on to become one of PlayStation 2’s biggest and most popular games, its slick cinematic style influencing the third-person action adventure genre in the following years, although very few titles attempted to ape its London-based flavour.

    The Getaway

In fact, it was the same team that ended up carrying the torch for the gaming-based Cockney capers that came after, creating the commercially successful PS2 sequel, The Getaway: Black Monday in 2004, and its PSP spin-off Gangs of London in 2006.

15 years on from its launch, The Getaway and its team still casts ripples throughout the games industry, with key members of its staff delivering acclaimed games such as Puppeteer (Gavin Moore) and L.A. Noire (Brendan McNamara), while Designer Dominic Robilliard is now Creative Director on highly anticipated PS4 exclusive Concrete Genie, recently unveiled during Paris Games Week.

Not only that, but both Will and Tara are working on the action-packed PlayStation VR exclusive, Blood & Truth, which looks to recapture the same London crime thriller feel of its PS2 forbearer.

    It’s been emotional

Given its legacy, it’s easy to see why The Getaway still has a faithful following, especially amongst those that spent years of their lives working on it.

    The Getaway

“The Getaway was my first project and also still one of the largest and most successful franchises I’ve worked on so it will always hold a special place in my heart,” says Tara.

“For me personally, still being part of the studio after 15 years and seeing us return to some of our London crime scene roots with Blood & Truth is very exciting! It’s incredible watching the action narrative genre be re-invented for virtual reality.”

    The Getaway

“It was my first big project,” recollects Will. “It seems strange today with how far games have come along in 15 years, but for its time The Getaway was very cutting edge.

“As the development process for Blood & Truth shapes up, everything that comes with the experience of making a game of this scale – the anticipation, the energy – reminds me of my Getaway days. Its spirit definitely lives on in PSVR.”

“I’m very proud of the Getaway and what we achieved at the time,” says Gavin. “Even though the process of creating the game was long and hard, I look back on those times with great fondness.

    The Getaway

“In London Studio, if your game sells a million copies you get a plaque with a platinum disc. I brought mine to Japan and it’s hanging in my house in Tokyo. It’s a good reminder of my roots and that however impossible the task looks, you can make it happen. Happy 15th anniversary to everyone who worked on The Getaway!”

6 things you didn’t know about The Getaway

    1. The team took over 500,000 reference images to capture London streets and locations used in the game. The large scale led to one of the team’s artists being banned from local planning offices, as he spent too much time looking at reference material.
    2. The grooves on the back of The Getaway disc are a digital map of London.
    3. Some of the art team were chased by club bouncers whilst on a reference photoshoot around Soho.
    4. There’s a secret first-person drive mode in the game involving Free Roam mode, a pink shop front, Charing Cross Road and a very tight time limit – can you figure it out?
    5. The character Eyebrows was played by Paul ‘Fish’ Burfoot, who has a successful hair product company based in London’s Soho neighbourhood. Other actors in the game went on to star in both Hollywood and Bollywood movies.
    6. The Getaway was the 100,000,000th disc to go through Sony’s DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation) supply chain – a big milestone for the company.

  • Sneak Peek: PlayStation Experience 2017

    Sneak Peek: PlayStation Experience 2017

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

PlayStation Experience 2017 is just a few days away and you’re in store for something truly special. To back up that claim, we wanted to give you a quick look at some of the incredible experiences and displays that we are furiously building for you right this very minute!

Last year, the PlayStation stage and programming took up over half of one of the halls. This year, the exhibit hall completely fills both Hall A and B of the Anaheim Convention Center. All programming has now moved over to the 4500-seat Arena attached to Hall A. That means we have over 50% more exhibit space filled with your favorite PlayStation games and experiences.

Not only did we fill it with more games, but we are building massive interactive environments for some of the hottest upcoming PlayStation games such as God of War, Detroit, and Days Gone. We’ve pulled out all the stops and collaborated with top creative geniuses to create authentic worlds that will completely immerse you in the games you will be playing in 2018.

    God of War

You will be able to trek the frozen Nordic tundras of God of War, learn about the back history of his son, Atreus, and take your own photo recreating the box art scene complete with frigid lake. Plus, if you’re really daring, and a true God of War fan, we will have a special makeover station that will ensure you bring out your inner Kratos by shaving your head, painting your face and dressing you up as Kratos himself!

    Shadow of the Colossus

Shadow of the Colossus was an incredible game when it first launched on PS2, and it looked even better when enhanced for PS3. In February, you will get to experience the game for the first time again with the rebuilt PS4 version. But at PSX, be prepared to live a moment that was once limited to your dreams as you face our full-scale Gaius Colossus bust. Climb up his back, grasp the sword atop his head and plunge it into his skull. Perfect Instagram material!

    Days Gone

Another fun area to explore will be the Pacific Northwest where you’ll step into the world of Days Gone. You’ll encounter massive, 12-foot tall infected bears and hordes of Freakers, so this area won’t be for the faint of heart – you’ve been warned!

    The Inpatient

We’ve gone to great lengths to recreate our game worlds at PSX, and that extends to some of PlayStation’s top new VR titles. One of the creepiest will be the sanitarium that we have created for The Inpatient. Step right up as our orderlies come out to greet you, seat you in a wheelchair, and then wheel you back indoors into an individual psych ward room for your play experience. You may not come out the same after this experience!

This is just a tiny peek at the massive new PlayStation Experience 2017. If you’ve been to PSX before, you will be astounded by how much it has grown and all that is has to offer. If this is your first visit, then you couldn’t have picked a better time to embark on your personal PlayStation journey.

We’ll have hundreds of playable game units covering dozens of games from Worldwide Studios and publishing partners including Activision, EA, Ubisoft and Capcom. And more than 80 independent developers will be on hand to show you the latest in PS fun.

We’ll also have an expanded PlayStation Gear retail store with over 175 products including the debut of 40 limited-edition items you won’t find online. For the first time, we’ll also feature an exterior store with extended hours in the courtyard between the Marriott and Hilton hotels outside the Anaheim Convention Center.

In the Arena, we’ll have a big lineup of panels and other special programming all Saturday. Then Sunday, all eyes shift to the Capcom Cup as the best of the best in the world compete for over $370K in prizes seeking the title of Street Fighter V 2017 champion!

Take a break from holiday shopping, or just buy yourself the ultimate holiday gift – a ticket to PlayStation Experience 2017. We wish we could tell you more, but we are holding it back so we can see that look of surprise and awe when you enter the halls. We are looking forward to it!

    See you soon in Anaheim!

  • Discover the Creators: Adam Badowski’s Favorite PS4 Games

Discover the Creators: Adam Badowski’s Favorite PS4 Games

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Discover The Creators is a new PlayStation Store curation program in which we’ve asked some of the biggest names in the biz to pick their favorite PS4 games in order to help your find your next game to play.

Hey! My name is Adam and I became a dad not that long ago, so this one is dedicated to those of you who love to play games, but suddenly have a lot less time to do so. Here’s my ‘quick fix’ playlist for everyone who’s in the mood for some instant action. Additionally, since good storytelling has always been at the heart of what we do at CD Projekt Red, the list below also contains a selection of games appreciated by many of the devs here at the studio.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

I really enjoy how The Phantom Pain allows players to approach missions the way you like — from being super stealthy, to run and gun, it’s all up to you how you choose to complete the objective. It’s a giant sandbox with some pretty cool toys at your disposal, which makes things really flexible in terms of managing time.

    Until Dawn

    Until Dawn

If you like intense experiences and fear is your thing, I think you should give Until Dawn a shot. The way the game plays with familiar tropes from your typical ‘cabin in the woods’ genre of horror, and makes them interactive, is worthy of high praise.

    War Thunder

    War Thunder

Since the game’s release on PlayStation 4, I’ve been very fond of aerial combat in War Thunder. The game’s arcade flight modes are ideal for some instant fun, while simulation modes allow you to feel full control (if you have the time and patience to master them!).

    Darkest Dungeon

    Darkest Dungeon

Darkest Dungeon is intense from the get go. It doesn’t take long before things become serious and you find yourself really invested in both the sanity of the characters you control, and their fate. Plus, it’s just a great RPG.

    Ratchet & Clank

    Ratchet & Clank (2016)

I like to reminisce and R&C is something that brings very fond memories of classic systems like PlayStation 2. It’s a treat for the eyes, and something you can enjoy with younger gamers in your family.

    Rayman Legends

    Rayman Legends

Rayman Legends is hands down one of my favourite platformers on PS4. Despite it’s not the easiest of games, it never frustrates, and always offers a great sense of satisfaction when you complete a level. Plus, I just love to lose myself in this kaleidoscope of color and sound — the way everything’s combined with gameplay is a real work of art.

    Bloodborne

    Bloodborne

Since we’re talking about challenges, Bloodborne, despite being an entirely different game than Rayman, also comes to mind. If skill-honing in games is something that you’re looking for, you’ll get a lot of bang for the buck. Plus, I totally fell for the Lovecraftian themes.

The Last of Us RemasteredUncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection

The Last of Us & Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection

Definite favourites here at the studio, TLoU and Uncharted’s story, pacing and superbly fleshed out characters make these games real must haves. I personally believe that the way these games run, look and feel will remain a reference for many future story-driven titles in the industry.

    Grand Theft Auto V

    Grand Theft Auto V

Another studio favourite, GTA V manages to blend really good storytelling with a world you can freely roam for hours on end. I mean, there’s not that many games that allow you to parachute down to the course for a quick game of golf.

    Celebrating 10 Years of Uncharted

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

This Sunday, November 19, marks the 10th anniversary of the Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune launch in North America. At the time, we knew it was the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the studio’s history, but never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined that it would be the first step in an adventure that would span five games across two console generations during the last decade. We’re truly fortunate to have had the opportunity to build the world of Uncharted and tell unbelievable stories with Nate, Elena, Sully, Sam, Chloe, Nadine, and the rest of the cast; all while you, our biggest fans, were along for the ride.

We’re commemorating the Uncharted 10th Anniversary with a month long celebration, beginning Sunday and culminating at PlayStation Experience 2017.

Join us as we take a look back with a new video above that revisits some of the most beloved moments from Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune through Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

We’ve also teamed up with PlayStation to create and release a new Uncharted 10th Anniversary PS4 system theme and profile avatar, which will be available for free for 48 hours — from Sunday, November 19 at 8:00 AM Pacific until 8:00 AM Pacific, Tuesday, November 21. During this period, other select Uncharted PS4 system themes and avatars will also be free. Visit the PlayStation Store and look for an “Uncharted 10th Anniversary Bundle.” Don’t miss it.

For our multiplayer fans, from today until December 19, we’re giving away an Uncharted 10th Anniversary character skin bundle in Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy multiplayer, which includes some classic skins for Nate, Elena, and Sully. We’re also hosting a 50% off sale on all Uncharted Point and Relic items until December 19.

We’ll wrap up the Uncharted 10th Anniversary celebrations at PlayStation Experience with event activities, including a special retrospective panel featuring members of the cast of Uncharted and a show floor puzzle room experience set in a life-sized recreation of Nate’s Attic.

We’ll also have new Uncharted 10th Anniversary merchandise available at the PlayStation Gear Store booth. Be sure to tune-in for the panel on Saturday, December 9 at 5:00 PM Pacific on live.playstation.com and follow Naughty Dog and PlayStation social channels all weekend long to see updates from the event.

On behalf of everyone at the studio, thank you for 10 incredible years of Uncharted.

  • PlayStation Collectible Cards Return to PlayStation Experience 2017

PlayStation Collectible Cards Return to PlayStation Experience 2017

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

That’s right — we’re back at it again with another set of PlayStation Collectible Cards! This is our third year dealing out these limited-edition, foil-embossed beauties, and the only way you can get your hands on them is to shuffle on over to PlayStation Experience 2017 in Anaheim, California on December 9 and 10.

We wrapped up Series Two with card #75 at the Road to Greatness tour and #76 at E3 Experience . Series Three will start with #77 and contains around three dozen new cards, all of which will be released at PlayStation Experience 2017 in Anaheim, California this December.

Attendees will also get the chance to earn PlayStation Trophy Cards by completing certain quests at the event — find out how via the Experience PlayStation app once the show starts.

Your Bronze Trophy card is already “in the bag” (meaning you’ll get one just for attending — it’ll literally be in your gift bag). You may be asking, “How can I get the rest of the cards?” The answer is simple (sorta). They’ll be located at certain locations and booths on the show floor, and you might even need to play a demo to earn some of them. Which locations/booths/demos? Well, you’ll need to figure that out on your own. Don’t worry, I believe in you (and reddit).

Cards are free for any PlayStation Experience attendee, while supplies last.

Don’t forget: PlayStation Experience 2017 tickets are available now. See you at the show!
