Hands-on with four PlayStation VR2 titles

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

We kicked off 2022 revealing the design of the PlayStation VR2, complete with its sleek headset and innovative PS VR2 Sense controllers. Following that, we shared more details on the user experience of PS VR2, like the illuminating see-through view and the customizable play area.

A stylish design and new features are excellent, but playing is believing when it comes to VR, and our team at PlayStation was pumped to have the opportunity to go hands on with upcoming PS VR2 titles. Read on to discover our experiences playing games from Guerrilla, Capcom, Skydance Interactive, and ILMxLab.

    Horizon Call of the Mountain

There’s a feeling of awe I remember having in my first playthrough of Horizon Zero Dawn when Aloy first looks out atop a roaming Tallneck to reveal both a new portion of the map and a majestic, ever-reaching view. That sense of scale takes on a whole new meaning the first time I craned my neck up to watch a Tallneck tower and stomp through my path in Horizon Call of the Mountain. From the moment I slipped on the PlayStation VR2 headset and set off into lands that felt so familiar, I realized I had never really experienced the vast beauty and mounting dangers of Horizon’s environments quite like this.

My hands-on demo brought me into the first person perspective of Ryas, a captive and disgraced Shadow Carja soldier that soon gets thrust into the wilds to fend for himself. Encountering machines in full realistic scale through his eyes was a constant thrill. You simply don’t realize how big a Snapmaw really is until one is chomping away at your canoe! Haptic feedback in the PS VR2 Sense controllers made the weight of each moving machine feel so real, and had me gasping when a herd of Grazers moved past me.

Things really fell into place once I started scrambling up cliff sides and got my hands on a bow and arrow. Drawing my bow and letting arrows fly in combat with a Watcher made me feel the power I’ve come to love from the Horizon series. Hand motions and aim feel so accurate and real to life with the PS VR2 Sense controllers, from the precision placement of my hands scaling an encampment tower to the tension in my bow when I let an arrow loose. The world never feels interrupted, with my health bar appearing as decorative scales on my right hand glove rather than taking up space in a HUD. Horizon Call of the Mountain transported me in a way that made my heart race, and has me aching to hop back in.

    – Kristen Zitani

    Resident Evil Village

Capcom invited me back to Castle Dimitrescu for an even more immersive survival horror experience with a bespoke PlayStation VR2 hands-on demo. The gothic world of Resident Evil Village pops thanks to the OLED, 4K PS VR2 displays, accentuating the details of carved gargoyles and ornately painted vases. Before Village, I spent lots of time in RE7’s intense PS VR mode, and playing this sequel in PS VR2 feels like a natural evolution of that experience. The dev wizards at Capcom appear to have cracked the code thanks to PS VR2’s high refresh rate and vivid visuals, as I felt comfortably immersed within the eerie castle walls.

Village’s first-person gameplay was already a thrilling experience on PS5, and PS VR2 offers an even deeper experience. I was delighted to discover that the trusty knife – often a last resort option – can be flicked at enemies from afar. Dual wielding the pistol and knife also ups the feeling of becoming a heroic survivor, and I can’t wait to tinker with more akimbo options.

Later in the demo, the daughters of the notorious Lady Dimitrescu attack and kidnap you. The haptics within the PS VR2 headset subtly rumble, simulating the experience of being roughly dragged to their mother’s quarters. As Lady Dimitrescu stands, the immersive nature of PS VR2 makes her towering stature all the more imposing. If being chased by her was intimidating before, it’s going to get even more harrowing in PS VR2, and I can’t wait.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution

The characters of The Walking Dead universe get by thanks to their resourcefulness and quick reflexes. I was delighted to discover the same skills are rewarded when playing Skydance Interactive’s upcoming PS VR2 sequel. The survival FPS pulled me into its dangerous world by digitally strapping guns, melee weapons, and a backpack to different parts of my in-game body. Reaching over my left shoulder to pull off my pack and rummage for health supplies in real-time as walkers close in is a pulse-pounding experience.

Combat encounters with walkers are deliberate and tense. I was impressed by the accurate tracking of the PS VR2 Sense controllers as I handled a fire axe, trying to find the best hand position to execute a meaty swing at a walker’s head. Accuracy counts in combat, too. I encountered walkers wearing bits of armor, requiring some surgical precision with a katana to target vulnerable spots.

The ranged arsenal is just as fun to wield, including revolvers, SMGs, assault rifles, shotguns, bows, and more. Skydance’s attention to detail and player expression transforms routine game mechanics like reloading; I felt like an action-movie hero when I flicked my double-barrel closed with one quick motion. Juggling your arsenal in real-time while managing incoming walker swarms feels appropriately badass, and has me excited to dive into the full survival adventure.

    – Tim Turi

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge – Enhanced Edition

After nearly 40 years of gaming, it’s easy for me to feel overconfident in a virtual firefight. Decades of muscle memory make reaching for the right weapon a simple task in just about any adventure. But when I leapt into my first encounter with the Guavian Death Gang on Batuu, PS VR2 headset firmly attached, I found myself literally reaching for the right weapon, flustered and hectic as I glanced across all my pockets, pouches, straps, and holsters for the right weapons as immersive sound and haptics further pulled me into the experience.

Naturally, I mean this in an exhilarating, positive way! The sense of “oh crap I’m surrounded” is totally different when your actual body needs to coordinate movements and inventory management. This created a wonderful rush as I ducked for cover, scavenged leftover blasters from fallen enemies, and pushed past the gang in search of my lost cargo. Furthermore, moments like manually reloading blasters and using the accuracy of the PS VR2 Sense controllers to manipulate tiny buttons on my wrists were intuitive and satisfying. As with any new controller or experience, there’s a lot to take in initially. It all quickly felt like second nature, however, and left me excited to see where else these tales would take me.

This early Batuu mission is just one scenario among many, as the game spans different eras and disciplines. In this adventure I was a droid repair technician in search of cargo, while other stories cast the player as a Jedi or even IG-88. Some tales will involve encounters with iconic characters like R2D2, C-3PO and Yoda (voiced by Anthony Daniels and Frank Oz, respectively), while the central cantina and cast of characters help build upon the experience in the actual Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge park in Disneyland. Talk about virtual reality!

  • Rebuilding Alexandria and crafting the dream arsenal in The Walking Dead Onslaught

Rebuilding Alexandria and crafting the dream arsenal in The Walking Dead Onslaught

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hi everyone! Last month, we announced the release date and showcased official gameplay for our upcoming PS VR title, The Walking Dead Onslaught. Today we’re back to dive into the Alexandria safe zone and explore how the iconic setting plays a critical role in the story and gameplay of The Walking Dead Onslaught.

    Starting over after the war

Set in the time skip between Season 8 and 9 of AMC’s The Walking Dead, the game takes place during a period with a lot of uncertainty in the future of our survivors’ communities. The war against Negan and his deadly band of Saviors has finally come to an end, but the damage they inflicted lingers on in the hearts of those left behind. We decided to theme our game around the idea of rebuilding after losing everything, and that started with the place our leading cast calls home: the Alexandria Safe Zone.

We’ve worked with AMC’s Producers and The Walking Dead writers to craft an original story that sees Daryl Dixon and Rick Grimes butting heads over their visions for the future of the safe zone. Where Rick believes that some personal sacrifices must be made for the greater good of the community, Daryl believes this has put their freedom to do good at risk. Rick represents the collectivist spirit to push society forward through his focus on rebuilding the new world. On the other hand, Daryl represents the individual human struggle in the apocalypse and demonstrates how Rick’s altruistic goals might not always benefit everyone.

These two different viewpoints are embodied in the very way players will experience the game, swapping between perspectives as Rick tries to rebuild Alexandria and as Daryl reveals the details behind a mysterious disappearance.

The Walking Dead OnslaughtThe Walking Dead Onslaught

A place to call home: rebuilding Alexandria

We knew it was important to represent Alexandria in a way that was authentic to the show while adding a layer of interactivity that allows players to lead the efforts to rebuild the community. The player will be at the heart of Alexandria as their decisions and actions help evolve it into a place for new survivors to call home.

Players will venture out to collect resources for Alexandria, bringing back food and fuel that will support scouting parties and new survivors. As the community grows, players will receive letters and requisition requests from their survivors that send them out to find specific items and provide big bonuses for Alexandria. Players have full agency over how they want to progress the community — crafting materials they’ve earned can be used to upgrade weapons in the Armory or build entirely new structures in Alexandria that can enhance your gameplay experience.

The Walking Dead OnslaughtThe Walking Dead Onslaught

    Crafting the dream arsenal

One of our favorite spots in Alexandria is the Armory, which houses all of the weapons players will discover outside Alexandria. Here, players can explore and experiment with The Walking Dead Onslaught’s robust weapon upgrade system. From Rick’s revolver to the Kingdom’s powerful battle axes, each weapon has multiple unique upgrades to mix and match — of course, players will need to save up enough materials to craft the upgrades first.

The Walking Dead OnslaughtThe Walking Dead Onslaught

Melee combat upgrades tend to be more fantastical. For example, crafting the Adrenaline upgrade grants players a burst of momentary slo-mo action against a walker herd. When it comes to firearms, upgrades are designed to be a little more tactical. Ranged weapon upgrades affect the weapon’s performance in combat and include visual attachments like vertical grips, holosights and muzzle breaks.

In the end, we want players to have a fun time killing walkers on their own terms, and we accomplished that by providing a toolset of weapons that are constantly evolving and changing the way players take on the walker threat that surrounds them.

The Walking Dead OnslaughtThe Walking Dead Onslaught

The Walking Dead Onslaught will be available in Standard and Deluxe editions, starting with a digital first release on September 29 followed by a physical disc release in October. Pre-purchases are available today on PS4 and at participating retailers; players who pre-order will get exclusive content, which you can see above. For more information, visit Playstation Store or other participating retailers.

We hope you’re as excited to play The Walking Dead Onslaught when it launches later this month!. • In The Walking Dead Onslaught Alexandria wieder aufbauen und Traumarsenal aufbauen

In The Walking Dead Onslaught Alexandria wieder aufbauen und Traumarsenal aufbauen

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hallo zusammen!

The Walking Dead OnslaughtThe Walking Dead Onslaught

The Walking Dead OnslaughtThe Walking Dead Onslaught

The Walking Dead OnslaughtThe Walking Dead Onslaught

• The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series Out Today

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series Out Today

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

I joined Telltale Games way back in 2011, before The Walking Dead’s first season came out. It was my first ever “real” job in the industry, and while I was naive and terrified, the passion and kindness of the scrappy team made it a great place to learn. At the time, they were toiling away in the widely considered dead genre of “adventure games” and there was little reason to believe we’d ever be catering to more than a small but dedicated fanbase. Until, ironically, we made a game about zombies.

The Walking Dead’s first season seemed special, even during production. It was a time of experimentation and risks. A time of strong creatives fighting for a vision they believed in and telling a story that was to become one of the all time greats. It taught me lessons I still use to this day. Its success was staggering, garnering more “Game of the Year” awards than anyone knew they even gave out. It broke hearts, expanded minds, and changed how storytelling in games was viewed and crafted.

Telltale expanded in size, moved to a new bigger office on a hill, and started making way more games in the style of The Walking Dead. Telltale became widely known as a bastion of quality storytelling, and breathed life into many different worlds and characters. More Walking Dead games were created, and fans followed Clementine as she fought and struggled and learned and grew across the years.

In the darkest moment of the series’ history, Telltale shut down without warning. In addition to the human cost of this tragedy, The Final Season was only half-done, and there was a very real chance Clementine’s journey would never see a conclusion.

Luckily, the original creators of The Walking Dead comics, Skybound, stepped in and through sheer force of love brought the season back from the grave, finished by an all ex-Telltale staff with the creative vision that we had originally intended. Miracles like this are not common in the games industry. Dead games don’t come back to life, and they don’t put the original team back to work, yet here we are today.

Because of this legacy, of how much The Walking Dead meant to so many, it was an honor to help Skybound Games put together The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series. It’s a loving tribute to the series crafted by a team wholly ex-Telltale. A few of us have been here since season one! We wanted to celebrate the blood, sweat, and tears of the hundreds of developers that made these games. We were driven by not letting them down, and by giving the fans something we’re truly proud of.

Honestly, this entire thing never would have happened had the fanbase not been so passionate about the series. The outcry of sorrow and support when Telltale shut down had no small part in bringing The Final Season back to life. It did the same for The Telltale Definitive Series, a package made with the super fan in mind. We did this for you. So thank you for loving Clementine so much. Your love gave a whole team of developers jobs, let a story find its ending, and let us give you the tribute to the series it’s always deserved. As Clementine herself said… thank you, for everything.

  • (SPOILERS) The Walking Dead Q&A — Andrew Lincoln (Rick)

(SPOILERS) The Walking Dead Q&A — Andrew Lincoln (Rick)

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes on AMC’s The Walking Dead, talks about his character’s mentality at the start of the new season, what the future looks like for Rick and taking out the Big Bad Wolf of the show.

Q: The first scene of the Season 8 Premiere features Rick rallying his people and insisting the world belongs to them. How far has Rick come from this time last year?

A: It’s a complete turnaround from a man who’s bowing before Negan at all costs for the sake of the community to a man who is free and liberated… It’s the total opposite of the man you saw at the beginning of Season 7. Certainly, you see the sentiment of his speech – which is that they’ve already won no matter what happens next.

Q: The attack on the Sanctuary was so intricate and strategic. Does the group getting caught out in the woods serve as a permanent reminder of what Negan is capable of if you’re not armed and ready?

A: That’s a great question. I think they are absolutely aware of the organization and skill of the foes they face. They know they need as decisive and overwhelming of a plan as possible because they are outnumbered and outgunned. They find the biggest army available to them, which is thousands of walkers. It’s an intricate plan based on the fact that they need to hit them big and early in order to get the upper hand. If they open fire and take out everybody, then the war is irrevocably on and it’s always going to be on. Of course, Rick tries to take a shot at Negan because he’s pledged to kill the man, but the rest of it is much more a show of force and then a retreat in order to blow open the gates and let the army in. As it goes on, you realize the plan is even more intricate.

Q: Is it gratifying for you to be back in one place with so many of your fellow cast members?

A: Yeah! That’s been the biggest thrill of this season – the fact that I get to work with people I love and who my character loves being around. They are some of the best friends I’ve made in my life. For a couple of seasons, we’ve been separate and divided in separate story arcs, but this season is very much The Magnificent Seven and everyone coming together to vanquish the Big Bad Wolf.

Q: The Season 8 Premiere is the 100th episode! What did that mean to you, personally?

A: I came to this country to work with actors like Norman ReedusMelissa McBrideMichael RookerScott WilsonLauren Cohan… these are amazing actors and we built this show together. There’s something incredibly satisfying about walking into a scene with somebody you’ve spent the last eight years with. It’s been an extraordinary roller-coaster of a journey together both on the screen and off. That’s been one of the biggest positives for me.

Q: There’s a theme of reshaping the world and building for future generations. Is that what Rick’s dream sequence of future Alexandria represents to him?

A: This future Alexandria is one of peace. You see in the episode, he says [to Maggie], “When this is done, I’m following you.” He realizes he’s not a politician. He’s not a governor. He’s a general at the moment. He wants a future for his children and he’s ultimately a father. He’s fighting as a father for future generations. What this season represents for him is: “What are we ultimately fighting for and what is the cost?” The vision that Deanna put forward in Seasons 5 and 6 is something I think he believes is a reality, but they do have a huge obstacle in the way that needs to be taken care of. That’s the nuts and bolts of this season.

Q: How do you think the giant white beard compared to some of your other looks on The Walking Dead?

A: I mean, that’s actually what I look like before makeup. It was nice because I didn’t need any dye put in my beard. [Laughs] It’s certainly a look. I hope it reprises its role on the show!
