Boston Dynamics‘ Humanoid Atlas Robot Gets Tested Outside!!

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Boston Dynamics‘ Atlas is basically a bipedal humanoid robot constructed of aircraft-grade aluminum and titanium. It stands approximately 6 feet (1.8 m) tall, weighs 330 pounds (150 kg), and is illuminated with blue LEDs. Atlas is equipped with two vision systems – a laser rangefinder and stereo cameras, both controlled by an onboard computer – and has hands with fine motor skill capabilities. Its limbs possess a total of 28 degrees of freedom. Atlas can navigate rough terrain and climb independently using its arms and legs.

Atlas is intended to aid emergency services in search and rescue operations, performing tasks such as shutting off valves, opening doors and operating powered equipment in environments where humans could not survive. The Department of Defense stated in 2013 that it had no interest in using the robot for offensive or defensive warfare.

The HMS Boudicca, by Singapore toy maker Michael Sng, isn’t just a static sculpture, it’s a fully-functional, 3D-printed robot tank. That’s right, it was painted and assembled entirely by hand, boasting a hexapodal walking motion, powered toy guns, along with a host of other electronics. Believe it or not, you can actually buy this robot for a cool $5,000.

Crazy Video Shows World’s First 18-Rotor Electric Helicopter Taking Flight

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Here’s a first look at the E-volo Volocopter VC200, the world’s first 18-rotor electric helicopter. The two-seater boasts 18 zero-emission motors powered by six battery packs, and a frame that’s made from carbon fiber to keep the aircraft lightweight. That’s not all, it maneuvers by using its multiple propellers and changing the thrust of its motors, similar to that of a quadcopter. (In case you’re looking around for the top quadcopters under 100 dollars – there’s more details here.)

According to Dvice, a prototype of the VC200 recently „took to the skies for its first series of test flights. Not only was the team impressed with the smooth flight experience of the aircraft, but they were also surprised by how quiet the Volocopter ran. The VC200 took a total of nine flights, including one that lasted nearly 22 meters.“

Advancements in robotics are continually taking place in the fields of space exploration, health care, public safety, entertainment, defense, and more. These machines — some fully autonomous, some requiring human input — extend our grasp, enhance our capabilities, and travel as our surrogates to places too dangerous or difficult for us to go. Gathered here are recent images of robotic technology at the beginning of the 21st century, including robotic insurgents, NASA’s Juno spacecraft on its way to Jupiter, and a machine inside an archaeological dig in Mexico.

Frank boasts a functioning circulatory system fitted with a beating heart.

The heart and other organs in the circulatory system were built by Alex Seifalian, a professor of Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine at University College London, using a specially-designed polymer that builds implantable organs of any shape.

The skin of the robot features over one million sensors that can detect touch and changes in temperature.

Boston Dynamics Unveils Speedy WildCat, a Robotic Mule That Can Run at 16MPH

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Boston Dynamics unveils its latest creation, and it’s definitely no slouch. Called the WildCat, this robotic mule WildCat can probably be considered the cheetah of its pack, and it’s capable of untethered speeds of up to 16 MPH thus far. Previously, the company’s Cheetah robot hit a record 29.3 MPH while tethered.

    boston-dynamics-wildcat

Remember that WildCat is doing all this without any tethers or supports. WildCat might not actually top out at 16 MPH either: that’s just the fastest it’s gotten up to thus far.

It’s hard not to think of the WildCat as a living thing once it gets going. When galloping, it really does resemble some sort of horse.

Erina Mano Stars in Live-Action Patlabor Project

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

The name of the new live-action Patlabor project is finally revealed! Called „The Next Generation -Patlabor-“ is set in the year 2013 in Tokyo and it represents the 3rd generation of Patlabor.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police has disbanded its Section 2 Division 1 of police robots, and Section 2 Division 2 barely survived the budget cuts due to the long recession.

Erina Mano (Kamen Rider Fourze) stars as pilot Akira Izumino, Seiji Fukushi as Yūma Shiobara, Rina Oota as Ekaterina Krachevna Kankaeva („Kasha“) from Russia, Shigeru Chiba reprising his anime role as maintenance squad chief Shigeo Shiba, and Toshio Kakei as Captain Keiji Gotōda (the successor to the anime’s Captain Kiichi Gotō).

The project will begin with a seven-part miniseries, which will run in special theatrical engagements in Japan, starting next April. The seven parts are composed of an episode 0 (about 10 minutes long) and 12 full episodes (about 48 minutes long) helmed by the project’s chief director Mamoru Oshii and other directors. Then, Oshii is directing and writing a feature-length film (about 100 minutes long) that will open in 2015. The title of the feature will be announced later.

The production is budgeted at 2 billion yen (US$20 million), and principal photography is running from June to the end of December. The two life-size Ingram robots were built at the cost of several tens of millions of yen (several hundred thousand US dollars).

Oshii commented that the seven-part series will have a „slapstick“ ambience, while the feature film will be serious. Oshii and Kei Yamamura are writing the scripts for the series, and Kenji Kawai is returning to the franchise to compose the music for both the series and the feature film.
