5 Spiele, bei denen ihr euch durch eine Post-Pandemie-Welt kämpfen müsst

Die Hauptrolle in einer post-pandemischen Geschichte zu spielen, ist definitiv keine leichte Aufgabe. In den meisten Fällen werdet ihr von hungrigen und gefährlichen Zombies an allen Ecken der Welt verfolgt und könnt euch wegen begrenzter Ressourcen auch nicht ganz so leicht gegen die aufdringlichen Angreifer verteidigen. Und all das nur, weil sich irgendwie ein Virus verbreitet hat, der Menschen und manchmal auch Tiere in Untote verwandelt. Wir stellen heute fünf Spiele vor, bei denen ihr euch in einer Post-Pandemie-Welt wiederfindet.

1. The Last of Us Part I

Wenn ihr auf der Suche nach einem Spiel mit perfektem Post-Pandemie-Setting seid, dann führt kein Weg an The Last of Us Part I vorbei. In dem Ausnahme-Action-Adventures von Naughty Dog begleitet ihr Joel und Ellie bei ihrer Reise quer durch die USA. Verschiedene Arten von Infizierten erschweren jedoch euer Vorankommen. Für die mutierten Wesen ist der parasitäre Cordyceps-Pilz verantwortlich, der bereits einen Großteil aller Menschen auf der Erde zu Infizierten gemacht hat.

Eine Ansteckung ist über zwei Wege möglich. Entweder wurden die gefährlichen Sporen des Cordyceps eingeatmet oder es ist zu Kontakt mit Körperflüssigkeiten einer infizierten Person gekommen. Danach dauert es nur ein oder zwei Tage, bis sich der Parasit im Gehirn des Wirts ausgebreitet hat. Der Auftrag von Joel – Ellie sicher in ein Versteck der Fireflies zu bringen – ist demnach alles andere als ungefährlich. Das originalgetreue Remake von The Last of Us Part 1 für PS5 bietet im direkten Vergleich zum Original aus dem Jahr 2013 eine vollständige Überarbeitung mit modernisierten Gameplay-Mechaniken, DualSense Controller-Funktionen, verbesserter Steuerung, erweiterten Barrierefreiheitsoptionen und vieles mehr.

2. Resident Evil 2 & 3

In der Welt von Resident Evil ist das T-Virus (Tyrant-Virus) für eine unaufhaltsame Zombie-Apokalypse in Raccoon City verantwortlich. Hergestellt wurde die Biowaffe von der Umbrella Corporation – bis sie später in die Hände einiger Personen gekommen ist, die wohl besser nichts damit zu tun haben sollten. Während das Virus im ersten Teil lediglich in einer Villa zu Testzwecken instrumentalisiert wurde, breitet sich das T-Virus danach immer weiter aus und verwandelt zahlreiche Bewohner von Raccoon City in Infizierte. Ihren Höhepunkt erreicht die Epidemie dann schließlich in Resident Evil 2 und 3, deren Geschichten quasi zur selben Zeit spielen.

Wenn ihr zunächst die Story von Resident Evil 2 erleben wollt, habt ihr vor Beginn die Wahl, ob ihr lieber die Rolle von Leon S. Kennedy oder Claire Redfield übernehmen wollt. Beide müssen in eine geheime Untergrundeinrichtung von Umbrella gelangen, um eine Probe bzw. das Gegengift für das G-Virus, eine Weiterentwicklung des T-Virus, zu sichern. Parallel dazu versucht Jill Valentine in Resident Evil 3 aus Raccoon City zu entkommen, wird dabei jedoch von der Biowaffe Nemesis auf Schritt und Tritt verfolgt.

3. Days Gone

Deacon St. John ist nicht nur Protagonist von Days Gone, sondern auch einer der wenigen Überlebenden einer weltweiten Pandemie. Das sogenannte Freaker-Virus hat Millionen von Menschen in die gleichnamigen Freaker verwandelt, die sich in Horden sammeln und alles in ihrer Umgebung angreifen. Insgesamt fünf unterschiedliche Arten von Infizierten werden euch in der Farewell-Wildnis immer wieder in die Quere kommen.

Freaker und Zombies haben übrigens viel weniger gemeinsam als man denkt. So handelt es sich bei den Infizierten in Days Gone noch immer um lebendige Wesen, die teilweise sogar noch sehr menschlich agieren. So müssen Freaker auch weiterhin Nahrung zu sich nehmen, Wasser trinken und schlafen. Ganz so schnell wird man sie also nicht los. Deacon hat aber einige Mittel, wie er sich verteidigen kann. So stehen Dinge wie Baseballschläger, Waffen und Molotov-Cocktails bereit. Dank seines Motorrads seid ihr zudem in der Spielwelt schnell unterwegs. Days Gone ist für euch im Spiele-Katalog von PlayStation Plus Extra enthalten.

4. Dying Light 2: Stay Human

Auch in der Geschichte von Dying Light 2: Stay Human bekommt ihr es mit den Folgen einer Pandemie zu tun. Nachdem das sogenannte Harran-Virus aus dem Vorgänger bestmöglich eingedämmt wurde, entwischte der Tollwut-ähnliche Erreger einige Jahre später aus einem Militärlabor in der Schweiz und löschte innerhalb weniger Monate beinahe die komplette Weltbevölkerung aus.

Lediglich eine Stadt hat die Pandemie mehr oder weniger überlebt. Villedor, Schauplatz von Dying Light 2: Stay Human. Täglich müssen sich die Bewohner allerdings gegen die Angriffe der Infizierten wehren. Virusträger und Beißer – nur zwei von vielen Stadien der Infektion – haben es auf gesunde Menschen abgesehen und wollen die Krankheit übertragen. Das ist durch das Injizieren von Körperflüssigkeiten in den Blutkreislauf möglich – meist durch einen Biss. Ein Heilmittel gibt es nicht. Dafür kann das Virus durch die Einnahme von Suppressiva unterdrückt werden.

5. World War Z

Solltet ihr eine post-pandemische Welt bevorzugt mit Freunden betreten wollen, dann könnte der Koop-Shooter World War Z etwas für euch sein. In verschiedenen Locations – darunter New York, Tokio, Rom oder Marseille – müsst ihr in der Rolle einer von sieben Klassen den Ansturm von Zombie-Horden überleben. Nutzt eure Fähigkeiten und arbeitet als Team, um die Wellen bezwingen zu können.

Die Ereignisse von World War Z basieren auf dem Roman von Max Brooks aus dem Jahr 2006 sowie der gleichnamigen Film-Adaption von 2013. Das Virus, das hinter der Pandemie steckt, ist als Solanum bekannt und verwandelt Infizierte in Zombies. Die Übertragung erfolgt auch hier mit Körperflüssigkeiten. Mehr als die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung wurden durch Solanum in der Spielwelt ausgelöscht.

Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2 und Resident Evil 3 erscheinen heute als PS5-Versionen

Hallo, hier ist Kanda Tsuyoshi von Capcom, Produzent von Resident Evil. Mit der Veröffentlichung des ersten Resident Evil Spiels für PlayStation wurde 1996 das Survival-Horror-Genre etabliert und seitdem sorgt die Reihe auf jeder Generation von Konsolen für Gänsehaut und Nervenkitzel.

Anfang des Jahres haben wir bekannt gegeben, dass Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017), Resident Evil 2 (2019) und Resident Evil 3 (2020) für die PlayStation 5 erscheinen werden und dass Besitzer der PlayStation 4-Versionen über die Upgrade-Option ohne zusätzliche Kosten auf die digitalen PS5-Versionen upgraden können. Ich freue mich, euch mitteilen zu können, dass die PS5-Versionen aller drei Titel ab heute im PlayStation Store erhältlich sind.

Diese Upgrades enthalten Features wie Raytracing-Grafik, 3D-Audio sowie Unterstützung für den DualSense Wireless-Controller und sorgen für ein ganz neues Spielerlebnis – wir können es kaum erwarten, dass ihr sie endlich ausprobieren könnt. In diesem Blog-Beitrag blicken wir auf einige der Dinge zurück, die diese Spiele so besonders gemacht haben.

Eine ganz neue Perspektive auf Angst

Bei seiner Veröffentlichung im Jahr 2017 hat Resident Evil 7: Biohazard einen Stein ins Rollen gebracht: Das rasante Gameplay und die Third-Person-Perspektive der modernen Resident Evil-Spiele verwandelte sich in ein langsameres, schauderhaftes First-Person-Erlebnis, bei dem ihr im Wesentlichen die dunklen Ecken und Winkel des Baker-Anwesens durch die Augen der Hauptfigur Ethan Winters erkundet habt.

Als wir das Gameplay von Resident Evil für diesen Titel neu entwickelten, war unser Ziel, uns auf die Angst vor dem Unbekannten zu konzentrieren – genau wie die Spieler vor all den Jahren das erste Spiel in den Händen hielten und keine Ahnung hatten, was sie erwarten würde, sollte diese neue Umgebung, der neue Charakter und die First-Person-Perspektive für eine völlig ungewohnte Situation und eine ganz neue Art von Horror sorgen. Wir haben aber auch dafür gesorgt, dass sich das Spiel in vielerlei Hinsicht wie ein echtes Resident Evil-Spiel anfühlt und dabei das elementare Survival-Horror-Element bewahrt, ob ihr nun aus dem Baker-Anwesen entkommen müsst oder die altbekannten Kräuter sammelt.

Dieses Spiel war auch das Debüt der damals neuen intern entwickelten RE Engine, die die audiovisuelle Qualität des Spiels auf der PlayStation 4 durch Fotogrammetrie-Techniken auf ein ganz neues Niveau brachte. So konnten wir hochauflösende Scans von realen Modellen, Texturen und Oberflächen ins Spiel bringen. Mit der Leistung der PlayStation 5 könnt ihr die verbesserte Grafik und den Schrecken jetzt ganz neu erleben!

Eine Horror-Legende wird neu geboren

Mit der Entwicklung der RE Engine, die eine bessere grafische Darstellung ermöglichte, war das Entwicklungsteam der Ansicht, dass es an der Zeit war, endlich die klassischen RE-Titel zu überarbeiten. Wir hatten bereits zahlreiche Anfragen von Fans erhalten, die sich eine moderne Neuauflage der Spiele wünschten. Der erste Titel, den wir wählten, war Resident Evil 2.

Da wir selbst große Fans des legendären Originalspiels sind, wollten wir dieses Remake mit größter Sorgfalt und Respekt angehen – nicht nur um die Arbeit des ursprünglichen Entwicklungsteams zu ehren, sondern auch weil wir wissen, was das Spiel für viele Spieler bedeutet. Es war schwierig und manchmal beinahe widersprüchlich, frische, neue Ideen zu entwickeln, die das Spiel modernisieren und gleichzeitig dem Original treu bleiben. Aber dank der Leistung der RE Engine und PlayStation konnten Fans als Leon und Claire erneut das Raccoon Police Department betreten.

Während wirklich jeder Aspekt der Grafik des Spiels überarbeitet wurde, um eine Atmosphäre zu schaffen, die die Erinnerungen der Fans übertraf und die dunklen, verlassenen Gänge der Polizeiwache atmosphärischer machte als je zuvor, konzentrierten wir uns insbesondere auf die Zombies, die erschreckend realistisch werden sollten. Lasst es mich so auf den Punkt bringen: Die glitzernde, nasse Blutrünstigkeit eines Zombiebisses hat noch nie so überzeugend echt ausgesehen!

Nemesis kehrt zurück

Nach dem Remake von Resident Evil 2 machten wir uns an das nächste Kapitel der Serie, in dem Raccoon City erneut vor einer Katastrophe stand. In Resident Evil 3 (2020) erlebten die Spieler Jill Valentine bei der Flucht aus einer dem Untergang geweihten Stadt, die mit der RE Engine eindrucksvoll neu entworfen wurde – aber in diesem beängstigenden Spiel bleibt keine Zeit für eine Besichtigungstour!

Wenn es um Resident Evil 3 geht, müssen wir über den legendären Nemesis sprechen. Das Team konnte auf unserer Arbeit an Tyrant – “die ultimative B.O.W.” von Resident Evil 2 – aufbauen, um die Nemesis-Figur zum Leben zu erwecken. Mit all unserer kombinierten Erfahrungen mit Motion Capture und Fotogrammetrie aus der Entwicklung von Resident Evil 7: Biohazard und Resident Evil 2 wurde diese neue Version von Nemesis zu einem der furchterregendsten Feinde der Serie und vielleicht sogar in der Geschichte von Videospielen.

Fazit

Egal, ob ihr Besitzer der PlayStation 4-Version seid und ein Upgrade macht oder ob ihr diese Spiele zum allerersten Mal auf der PlayStation 5 erlebt, ich bin sicher, ihr werdet jede Minute dieser modernen Horror-Klassiker genießen! Zombies, Freaker, Infizierte: 7 PlayStation-Spiele zum gepflegten Gruseln

Seit vielen Jahren sind Zombies ein fester Bestandteil unserer Popkultur und auch in diversen PlayStation-Spielen ließen sie uns immer wieder das Blut in den Adern gefrieren. Falls ihr jetzt direkt wieder Lust bekommt, in schlecht ausgeleuchteten Gassen oder postapokalyptischen Städten um euer virtuelles Überleben zu kämpfen, möchten wir euch nachfolgend sieben Zombie-Games vorstellen, in denen ihr genau das bekommt.

Dabei haben wir uns Titel herausgesucht, die eine breite Horror-Palette repräsentieren. Von seriösen Horrorszenarien über emotional packende Grusel-Abenteuer bis hin zu etwas abgedrehten Zombie-Spaß wird alles geboten. Als verbindendes Element dienen dabei selbstverständlich untote Gegner in allen Größen und Formen, die euch ans Leder wollen!

Days Gone

2019 veröffentlichte das Team von Sonys Bend Studio das Open-World-Abenteuer Days Gone. In dieser Welt ist die Zivilisation, wie wir sie kennen, längst untergegangen und ihr bereist deren Überreste in der Rolle des abgeklärten Bikers Deacon St. John. Er und sein Freund Boozer nehmen gemeinsam diverse Aufträge an und reisen immer wieder umher. Erschwert werden ihre Trips jedoch durch die sogenannten Freakers, extrem aggressiven Infizierten, die alles angreifen, was sie erblicken. Selbst Tiere sind infiziert! Seinen großen Reiz zieht das Spiel jedoch aus der schieren Anzahl der Zombie-ähnlichen Monster, die euch das Fleisch von den Knochen reißen wollen.

Ihr begegnet nämlich nicht nur kleinen Gruppen, sondern manchmal sogar hunderten Freakers auf einmal! Dabei ist es stets euch überlassen, ob ihr die Gegner mit Waffengewalt niedermähen oder lieber mit clever platzierten Fallen dezimieren wollt. Notfalls ist sogar die Flucht keine Option, für die ihr euch schämen müsst. Eines ist sicher: Wer einmal den Zusammenstoß mit einer wahren Freakers-Armee mit letzten Kräften gerade so noch heile überstanden hat, wird dieses Adrenalin-treibende Erlebnis so schnell garantiert nicht vergessen.

Dead Rising 4: Franks Komplettpaket

Auch in Dead Rising 4 seht ihr euch einer wahren Zombie-Übermacht gegenüber. Bei diesen Gegnern handelt es sich jedoch, von einigen Ausnahmen mal abgesehen, um eher gewöhnliche Untote. Sie dürften euch somit in erster Linie aufgrund ihrer schieren Masse und nicht ihrer Klasse in Bedrängnis bringen. Zudem ermutigt euch das Spiel, nicht ängstlich in der Ecke zu kauern, sondern vielmehr den offenen Kampf zu suchen. Sollte der Titel bisher an euch vorbeigegangen sein, stellt ihn euch wie ein klassisches Beat ’em up mit allerlei Zombies vor.

Das Besondere an diesem Action-Horrorspiel ist zudem, dass es sich nicht ähnlich ernst nimmt wie die übrigen Titel auf unserer kleinen Liste. Vielmehr steht der Spaß im Vordergrund, in der Rolle des Fotojournalisten Frank West möglichst viele Zombies auf möglichst abgedrehte Art und Weise über den virtuellen Jordan zu schicken. Ihr wolltet schon immer einmal in einem Exo-Suit mit einer XXL-Zuckerstange Zombies zerlegen? Es war schon immer ein Traum von euch, mit einer Kettensäge durch untote Horden zu pflügen oder auf einem Segway die verfaulenden Feinde über den Haufen zu fahren? Hier können diese und natürlich noch viele weitere abgedrehte Wünsche in Erfüllung gehen!

Death Road to Canada

Der optisch speziellste Titel in unserem Artikel ist derweil zweifelsohne “Death Road to Canada“, der euch mit einem schicken Pixel-Look in seinen Bann ziehen möchte. Die Story des Spiels passt dabei zum Old School-Feeling, denn euer Spielcharakter erfährt, dass es im Land des Ahornsirups sicher sein soll. Ein altbekannter Plotpoint in diversen Zombie-Geschichten und einer, der sich bekanntlich bewährt hat. So beginnt ein verzweifelter Roadtrip quer durch die von Untoten verwüsteten USA.

Doch auch spielerisch gibt es einen besonderen Twist, denn viele Facetten des Games sind zufallsgeneriert. Hierzu zählen unter anderem eure Spielfigur, andere Charaktere, die ihr auf eurer Reise rekrutieren dürft, sowie diverse Ereignisse. In Kombination mit zahlreichen Zombies, knappen Ressourcen und kniffligen Entscheidungen entfaltet sich so eine einvernehmende Atmosphäre, die euch unmittelbar in den Überlebenskampf hineinzieht. Und so viel sei bereits verraten: Einige Entscheidungen werden an euch nagen wie Zombies an einem Stück Frischfleisch.

Dying Light 2

Der jüngste Titel auf unserer Liste hat es wirklich in sich. In Dying Light 2 schlüpft ihr in die Rolle von Aiden, der als Kurier durch die Überreste der einstigen Zivilisation läuft. Seine Suche nach einer wichtigen Person führt ihn in die Stadt Villedor, einer der letzten Bastionen gegen die zahllosen Zombies, die die Welt in den vergangenen Jahren überrannten. Der Clou an der Sache: Der Hauptcharakter ist selbst mit dem sogenannten Harran-Virus infiziert und könnte sich nachts in eines der untoten Monster verwandeln, wenn er es nicht rechtzeitig in eine der Sicherheitszonen schaffen sollte.

Tagsüber stellen die Zombies dafür keine Bedrohung da und auch ihr müsst euch über Aidens Krankheit eher weniger Gedanken machen. Das ändert sich jedoch, wenn die Nacht hereinbricht. Wenn ihr dann noch draußen unterwegs seid, entbrennt ein unerbittlicher Kampf ums Überleben. Die Untoten sind aggressiver, schneller und stärker. Resident Evil zählt zu den Gründungsvätern des modernen Survival-Horror-Genres und darf somit auf einer Liste über Zombie-Games natürlich nicht fehlen. Stellvertretend für die Reihe möchten wir euch hier die aufwendig produzierten Remakes von Resident Evil 2 & 3 ans Herz legen, deren Storys wie schon in den beiden Originalen miteinander verbunden sind und parallel zueinander ablaufen. In den Neuauflagen hat Capcom nicht nur die Technik ordentlich überarbeitet, sondern ebenfalls das Gameplay.

Wir steuern Claire und Leon (RE2) sowie Jill und Carlos (RE3) nun aus einer Über-die-Schulter-Perspektive. Am Spielprinzip rüttelten die Verantwortlichen dafür weniger, denn noch immer müsst ihr euch allerlei gefräßiger Zombies und weiterer abartiger Schöpfungen des Umbrella-Konzerns erwehren. Natürlich wäre unsere Liste nicht komplett ohne die mitreißenden wie gleichermaßen herzzerreißenden Abenteuer von Joel und Ellie. Beide Spiele zeichnen das Bild einer Postapokalypse, in der die Menschheit von Zombie-ähnlichen Infizierten beinahe ausgelöscht wurde. Das Virus breitet sich noch immer aus und je länger ein Mensch dessen Einfluss ausgesetzt ist, desto stärker verändert er sich. Zunächst psychisch und dann physisch. Es gibt jedoch einen Hoffnungsschimmer, denn Ellie, ein junges Mädchen, könnte der Schlüssel für eine Heilung für diese schreckliche Krankheit sein.

In der Rolle von Joel und später auch Ellie müsst ihr euch dabei mit allerlei Infizierten herumschlagen, die euren beiden Spielfiguren körperlich weit überlegen sind. Gerade Part II hält einige sehr starke Monster bereit, denen ihr möglichst aus dem Weg gehen solltet, wenn ihr die Chance dazu habt. In den verfallenen Ruinen oder auch nachts kommt dabei eine wohlige Horror-Stimmung auf, die noch dadurch verstärkt wird, dass beide Figuren nur wenig aushalten und Ressourcen knapp sind. Des Weiteren erzählen beide Games emotional packende Geschichten über Liebe, Hass, Familie und Rache. Es sind zwei besondere PlayStation-Erfahrungen, die ihr euch keinesfalls entgehen lassen solltet.

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series

Wesentlich ruhiger geht es derweil in The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series zu. Hier liegt der Fokus weniger auf der Action oder dem Survival-Gameplay, sondern in erster Linie auf der Story und den Charakteren. Es geht gewissermaßen darum, die Menschlichkeit nach einer Zombie-Pandemie zu ergründen. Wie schon in anderen Spielen des Entwicklerstudios beschränkt sich das Gameplay vor allem auf Quick-Time-Events, deren Ausgänge hingegen teils massive Konsequenzen haben können.

Selbiges gilt für die übrigen Entscheidungen, die ihr in den Spielen treffen müsst, denn diese beeinflussen ebenfalls den Handlungsverlauf. Ihr schlüpft in der Story in die Haut von Lee Everett, der einst wegen Mordes verurteilt wurde. Nachdem die Zivilisation zusammenbrach, fand er sich jedoch als Beschützer eines kleinen Mädchens namens Clementine wieder. An ihrer Seite erlebt ihr fortan gemeinsam eine spannende Reise, auf der ihr andere Überlebende trefft und harte Entscheidungen fällen müsst. Egal ob Konfrontationen mit Zombies oder Menschen, ihr müsst mit den Konsequenzen eurer Taten leben.

Denn ihr übernehmt nicht die Rolle eines edlen Vampirjägers mit Holzpflock und Kruzifix, sondern schleicht als Kreatur der Nacht durch die düstere Kulisse. Kurz zur Story: Der Protagonist Dr, Jonathan Reid ist im Jahr 1918 von den verstörenden Schlachtfeldern des 1. Weltkriegs nach London zurückgekehrt und damit vom Regen in die Traufe geraten. In der Großstadt wütet wie überall in Europa die tödliche Spanische Grippe und Geschichten von Serienmördern, die im Dunkeln lauern, machen die Runde. Die allerdings hält Jonathan für unnötige Panikmache, bis er eines Tages mit Erinnerungslücken in einem Massengrab aufwacht und unstillbaren Durst nach Blut verspürt.

Wer sagt eigentlich, dass Zombies sich immer nur schlurfend im Schneckentempo zu bewegen haben? Das beste Beispiel für beängstigend agile Untote liefert definitiv der Multiplayer-Kracher World War Z. Basierend auf dem gleichnamigen Film, schlagt ihr euch an Schauplätzen, wie New York, Moskau, Tokio oder Jerusalem mit Horden an blitzschnellen Zombies herum. Der Grusel in dem Koop-Shooter für vier Mitspieler stellt sich dabei nicht durch dunkle Schatten oder fiese Jump-Scares ein, sondern durch die unglaubliche Masse an halbverwesten Gestalten, die scheinbar unaufhaltsam auf euch losstürmt. Zum Glück habt ihr aber ein reichhaltiges Waffenarsenal aus Schusswaffen, Kettensägen und Granaten zur Verfügung, mit dem ihr die wimmelnden Gegnerwellen effektvoll und blutig ausdünnt.

Resident Evil 7 biohazard

Eine Liste der besten Horror-Games ohne Resident Evil 7 ist schlichtweg undenkbar. Der Schauplatz ist diesmal aber nicht Racoon City und die spannende Geschichte rund um den abscheulichen Baker-Clan wartet nicht mit Tyrants und T-Virus auf, sondern bedient den Backwoods-Survival-Horror aus Filmen wie „Texas Chainsaw Massacre“ oder „Wrong Turn“. Aus der Ego-Perspektive steuert ihr den unglücklichen Ethan, der in den zivilisationsfernen Sumpfgebieten der amerikanischen Südstaaten nach seiner spurlos verschwundenen Freundin sucht und dabei die Bekanntschaft mit den zutiefst gestörten Bakers macht. Vater Jack, Mutter Marguerite oder Sprössling Lucas, keines der Hillbilly-Familienmitglieder ist auch nur ansatzweise normal und macht euch das Leben im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes zur Hölle. Wenn ihr die nächsten Wochen auf einen erholsamen Schlaf verzichten könnt, spielt den Horror-Trip mit eurer PlayStation VR-Brille, die Atmosphäre und die zahlreichen Jump-Scares sind einfach krass.

Resident Evil 2 Turns 1: Capcom Celebrates the Remake’s First Anniversary

One year ago, Capcom resurrected its survival horror opus, Resident Evil 2, to terrify a whole new generation. A complete rebuild of the PSone classic, Remake managed to hit the iconic highs of the original, introduce fresh surprises and give us one of the most memorable bogeymen of the PS4 era in the form of Mr. X.

While remakes are no longer a rarity, fan furor behind this particular project — before the first trailer debuted and even before it was even officially announced by the studio — underscored how highly regarded the 1998 release was, and still is. Any trepidation to the gameplay changes being wrought by the developer dissipated as soon as players took their first few steps into a remodelled yet eerily familiar RPD Police Station.

To mark the game’s one year anniversary, we asked key members of its development staff — Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, Director Kazunori Kadoi, Art Director Satoshi Takamatsu and Composer Shusaku Uchiyama — to recollect key moments from its development. Below are their personal accounts and memories, starting with the original pitch and finishing with the game’s launch in 2019. Enjoy.

The story behind the original pitch

Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi: “We’ve spoken about this a lot since the game was announced, but we’ve always had many fans telling us they want us to remake Resident Evil 2. We considered it several times over the years, but it’s a tough proposition to make a great remake out of this classic game, and we never got it off the ground.

Finally, after some years, the timing was right and we talked about remaking RE2 again, and this time we were able to get the go-ahead to proceed with development. Some fans may remember that as soon as we did this, we did our “We Do It” announcement on social media in August 2015, because we were so excited to be able to confirm the game was in the works. To the team, which was still relatively small back then, this felt like the real start of the hard work!”

The moment when the team realized the new design would work

Director Kazunori Kadoi: For me, I think it was when we first got the visuals and gameplay functions of the zombies all working in tandem and were able to playtest shooting them, taking off limbs with well-placed shots and so on. It felt great and it didn’t get boring no matter how much you did it, and that made me feel like this game really had something special.

The team’s biggest challenge

Director Kazunori Kadoi: Well, since it’s a remake and the original is a game which already has many, many fans around the world, the biggest challenge was really in not betraying the expectations of those fans while also keeping the remake fresh. Balancing these aspects was a tough juggling act during development and required many tough decisions.

Leon

It was important to retain the look Leon had in the original, emphasizing the fact that, as this is his first appearance in the series chronologically, he’s very much a “greenhorn” rookie. I also wanted to bring a more realistic touch to his police officer’s outfit and accessories — no more shoulder pads! We actually worked with a military gear manufacturer to this end.

Claire

As with Leon, I felt that we had to bring a balance of respecting her original design while bringing the realism that is expected of a modern title. Claire likes motorbikes and is very active, so I wanted to redesign her in a way that reflected her personality and showed that she is an attractive, strong person. She has her iconic red biker jacket which of course had to stay, but we had the design on the back redone from scratch by our other art director, a British guy called Gez Fry.

Ada

Ada’s a character who means a lot to both the fans and the development team, and she was really tough to design for this remake. We had so many iterations of her costume, and it took over six months of auditions before we settled on her face model. After all that work, I was glad to see that the fans seemed to like her new look! Getting positive feedback makes the effort worth it.

Sherry

I approached the redesign of Sherry by thinking that she should not just be a stock “cute little girl” character, but have some depth to her and make her a character that you could get attached to, and who you want to protect. For Sherry, Claire and Ada, the art director from Resident Evil 7, Tomonori Takano, joined the team and helped us.

Tyrant

In the original Resident Evil 2, the Tyrant is dropped in from a helicopter, but in the new game we approached his design based on his original concept: an infiltrator who will relentlessly pursue his target until he can exterminate them. This is why he hides his face with a hat, although I guess he hasn’t been totally successful in doing so… (laughs) It’s been great to see how scary players found him and how much they love him as a character.

The game’s new score and its sound design

Composer Shusaku Uchiyama: The issue of how to create sound design and music that would both be modern and fitting for a new game in 2019, and also bring to mind the sound of a game released 20 years ago, was a tough one, but it was also a fun and rewarding experience to tackle that challenge together as a team.

Watching fan reaction to the game’s reveal

Director Kazunori Kadoi: The whole development team got together in our office to watch the E3 announcement in real time. We didn’t think that a game which is “just” a remake would garner such a massive reaction, so we were surprised and delighted to see the response. Not only that but once reactions to the gameplay on the E3 booth started to hit, we saw that people loved it, and we even got some show awards! This was both the highest praise for me as a director, and also somehow a kind of additional pressure for the remaining months of the project (laughs).

Celebrating the game going gold

Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi: Once the game went gold, we had a big party together. I could see from everyone’s expressions that each and every team member had a huge sense of achievement at finally getting to this point, and we chatted about the various difficulties we’d had during the project, the fans’ impressions of the gameplay and so on.

Any trepidation to the gameplay changes being wrought by the developer dissipated as soon as players took their first few steps into a remodelled yet eerily familiar RPD Police Station.

To mark the game’s one year anniversary, we asked key members of its development staff — Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, Director Kazunori Kadoi, Art Director Satoshi Takamatsu and Composer Shusaku Uchiyama — to recollect key moments from its development. Below are their personal accounts and memories, starting with the original pitch and finishing with the game’s launch in 2019. Enjoy.

The story behind the original pitch

Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi: “We’ve spoken about this a lot since the game was announced, but we’ve always had many fans telling us they want us to remake Resident Evil 2. We considered it several times over the years, but it’s a tough proposition to make a great remake out of this classic game, and we never got it off the ground.

Finally, after some years, the timing was right and we talked about remaking RE2 again, and this time we were able to get the go-ahead to proceed with development. Some fans may remember that as soon as we did this, we did our “We Do It” announcement on social media in August 2015, because we were so excited to be able to confirm the game was in the works. To the team, which was still relatively small back then, this felt like the real start of the hard work!”

The moment when the team realized the new design would work

Director Kazunori Kadoi: For me, I think it was when we first got the visuals and gameplay functions of the zombies all working in tandem and were able to playtest shooting them, taking off limbs with well-placed shots and so on. It felt great and it didn’t get boring no matter how much you did it, and that made me feel like this game really had something special.

The team’s biggest challenge

Director Kazunori Kadoi: Well, since it’s a remake and the original is a game which already has many, many fans around the world, the biggest challenge was really in not betraying the expectations of those fans while also keeping the remake fresh. Balancing these aspects was a tough juggling act during development and required many tough decisions.

Leon

It was important to retain the look Leon had in the original, emphasizing the fact that, as this is his first appearance in the series chronologically, he’s very much a “greenhorn” rookie. I also wanted to bring a more realistic touch to his police officer’s outfit and accessories — no more shoulder pads! We actually worked with a military gear manufacturer to this end.

Claire

As with Leon, I felt that we had to bring a balance of respecting her original design while bringing the realism that is expected of a modern title. Claire likes motorbikes and is very active, so I wanted to redesign her in a way that reflected her personality and showed that she is an attractive, strong person. She has her iconic red biker jacket which of course had to stay, but we had the design on the back redone from scratch by our other art director, a British guy called Gez Fry.

Ada

Ada’s a character who means a lot to both the fans and the development team, and she was really tough to design for this remake. We had so many iterations of her costume, and it took over six months of auditions before we settled on her face model. After all that work, I was glad to see that the fans seemed to like her new look! Getting positive feedback makes the effort worth it.

Sherry

I approached the redesign of Sherry by thinking that she should not just be a stock “cute little girl” character, but have some depth to her and make her a character that you could get attached to, and who you want to protect. For Sherry, Claire and Ada, the art director from Resident Evil 7, Tomonori Takano, joined the team and helped us.

Tyrant

In the original Resident Evil 2, the Tyrant is dropped in from a helicopter, but in the new game we approached his design based on his original concept: an infiltrator who will relentlessly pursue his target until he can exterminate them. This is why he hides his face with a hat, although I guess he hasn’t been totally successful in doing so… (laughs) It’s been great to see how scary players found him and how much they love him as a character.

The game’s new score and its sound design

Composer Shusaku Uchiyama: The issue of how to create sound design and music that would both be modern and fitting for a new game in 2019, and also bring to mind the sound of a game released 20 years ago, was a tough one, but it was also a fun and rewarding experience to tackle that challenge together as a team.

Watching fan reaction to the game’s reveal

Director Kazunori Kadoi: The whole development team got together in our office to watch the E3 announcement in real time. We didn’t think that a game which is “just” a remake would garner such a massive reaction, so we were surprised and delighted to see the response. Not only that but once reactions to the gameplay on the E3 booth started to hit, we saw that people loved it, and we even got some show awards! This was both the highest praise for me as a director, and also somehow a kind of additional pressure for the remaining months of the project (laughs).

Celebrating the game going gold

Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi: Once the game went gold, we had a big party together. I could see from everyone’s expressions that each and every team member had a huge sense of achievement at finally getting to this point, and we chatted about the various difficulties we’d had during the project, the fans’ impressions of the gameplay and so on.

Actually, the project leaders including myself wanted to have this kind of “behind the curtain” discussion be available for fans to see what we really talk about, so we had another dev team roundtable session separately, which was filmed and put online. Editors’ Choice: Resident Evil 2 is Survival Horror Mastered

Dreams of a Resident Evil 2 remake have been swirling in my head since 2005. My imagination ignited the moment I unlocked Leon’s Raccoon Police Department outfit in Resident Evil 4. Seeing the outbreak survivor in his updated, detailed RPD uniform battling parasitic threats with RE4’s revolutionary over-the-shoulder gunplay set my mind wild imagining what a remake of RE2 could look and play like. Fast forward to 2019, and Capcom has delivered on fervent fan expectations that have been marinating for over two decades.

Capcom’s stunning 2002 remake of the original Resident Evil is perhaps the finest horror game ever made, so quality expectations were high heading into the RE2 remake. The modern third-person gunplay merges seamlessly with the traditional, atmospheric survival horror trappings. Don’t let the empowering aiming system fool you into thinking this is a guns-blazing action game – zombies can shrug off more bullets than ever. Enemies’ toughness and agility places the priority on subduing and evading rather than destroying everything, which ratchets up the tension of every encounter. Ammo and health are still your precious, limited lifeblood.

Beyond the intuitive gunplay changes, this remake adds meaningful new gameplay options. Knives can be used both offensively and as get-out-of-jail-free-card defensive weapons, introducing new strategic options. A crafting system similar to RE7’s lets players make the ammo they prefer. Multiple stylish ’90s fanny packs can be found to expand your inventory. Capcom nails the details and expertly embellishes existing survival horror systems.

The fearsome Tyrant (aka Mr. X) crashes the party in the main RE2 campaign, unlike the 1998 original where he patiently waited to terrorize you until the second playthrough. Tyrant is a hulking, unstoppable, trenchcoated menace — and I adore him. The bio-weapon is an unrelenting slasher movie tribute injected into an already intense zombie apocalypse. His heavy, oppressive footsteps thud throughout the police department and constantly remind players they’re in danger. His ability to endlessly stalk you throughout most of the building makes ducking into a safe room more relieving than ever. Tyrant is an encapsulation of what Capcom gets right about this remake, capitalizing on his full gameplay potential from the original game while staying true to the somewhat grounded universe of RE.

Resident Evil 2 was an ambitious sequel back in 1998, packing two PlayStation discs — one for Leon S. Kennedy and another for Claire Redfield. After players finished the game with one character, they could play through the horrific events from the other’s perspective. The remake preserves this ingenious formula, offering brave players four distinct playthroughs. Replaying RE2 is where the game (and series) truly sings, enabling players who once felt like they were barely scraping by to become zombie-dodging masters. Memorizing the RPD layout, expertly navigating the labyrinthine sewers, and unlocking bonus weapons (unlimited ammo!) for subsequent playthroughs is part of the full RE2 experience.

Over 20 years after the celebrated original, the Resident Evil 2 remake earns’ PlayStation’s Editors’ Choice as a defining horror experience. This remake shows that the Capcom team — who invented the genre in 1996 — still deserves the mantle of masters of survival horror. RE2 is manages to be consistently nerve-wracking, smooth, and entertaining. The fun’s not over, either — the recent announcement of the Resident Evil 3 remake has me thrilled to survive Raccoon City once again.
