First-ever Olympic Virtual Series Motor Sport Event airs June 23

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

After an intense 11 days, qualifying for the Olympic Virtual Series Motor Sport Event is now over and we can reveal the 16 Gran Turismo Sport players who will be racing for glory in the final that will be broadcast on Olympic Day, June 23.

With fractions of a second being squeezed out daily from the Tokyo Expressway South Inner Loop in the Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept Gr.3, the action went down to the wire to finalise the top 16 of the Global Online Qualification event. But at the top of that exclusive list, the fastest time was set with three days of the time trial still to go when Italy’s Valerio Gallo (Williams_BRacer) recorded a 1’55.046. His stunning lap held off challenges from second-placed Andrew Brooks (PX7-Deafsun) from Canada who set a 1’55.098 with one day of the event left and France’s Baptiste Beauvois (R8G_TSUTSU) whose 1’55.102 with 12 hours to spare secured him the third qualifying spot for the final.

They will enter the Olympic Virtual Series Motor Sport Event as favourites, but with less than four-tenths of a second separating the 16 qualifiers from all over the world, the stage is set for some ultra-close racing to decide our winner.

With Gallo Europe’s fastest and Brooks heading the North American table, Japan’s Takuma Miyazono (Kerokkuma_ej20) (1’55.109) was Asia’s fastest. Angel Inostroza (YASHEAT_Loyrot) (1’55.117) from Chile took the honours for Central & South America with Australia’s Adam Wilk (Adam_2167) (1’55.249) taking the only place in the final for the Oceania region. Check out the 16 best qualifying times at the end of this article.

Announced in April, the Olympic Virtual Series is a new initiative from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). They have partnered with five international sports federations and corresponding games publishers to create virtual events in Baseball, Cycling, Rowing, Sailing, and Motor Sport.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and Polyphony Digital Inc. were proud to be chosen to create the Olympic Virtual Series Motor Sport Event on Gran Turismo Sport.

Seven countries from the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region will be represented in the final along with the top four from Asia, one from Oceania, two from North America and two from Central & South America. See you on June 23 when the event streams live on PlayStation’s Twitch channel.

  • Allererste „Olympic Virtual Series“-Motorsportveranstaltung wird am 23. Juni zu übertragen

Allererste „Olympic Virtual Series“-Motorsportveranstaltung wird am 23. Juni zu übertragen

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

  • The FIA Certified Gran Turismo Championships returns for 2021 Season

The FIA Certified Gran Turismo Championships returns for 2021 Season

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

As we enter our fourth year of the FIA Certified Gran Turismo Championships I am no less excited than I was back in 2018. Last year was a fantastic season of racing and we eventually saw a dominant display from Japanese racer Takuma Miyazono that saw him become Nations Cup Champion as well as being part of Team Subaru, alongside Mikail Hizal (TUR) and Daniel Solis (USA), who won the Manufacturer Series.

Due to the effect of Covid-19, we are missing the atmosphere of our live World Tours and the opportunity to meet our wonderful competitors directly, but we’re lucky that we can still test new ideas and continue to grow the FIA Gran Turismo Championships even in this online only environment.

We’re excited by the new format for the series this year and, with new developments in our broadcast production integrating new technologies, we are certain that we can show everyone even more exciting racing action.

While we are looking forward to getting back to meeting up with competitors and audiences in person, we feel it is right to keep the Championships purely online in 2021. I wish the best of luck to all of the fantastic competitors who will participate within the competition.

The FIA Gran Turismo Championships will start on Wednesday, April 21 – so if you want to enter then make sure you sign up in Sports Mode on GT Sport  – you can find the full terms and conditions here.

Details of the different stages and all of our new broadcasts can be seen below. As a reminder, the Championship comprises a ‘Nations Cup’, where drivers compete for their country, and a ‘Manufacturer Series’, where they compete for one of the manufacturers featured in-game, each has a slightly different structure. For anyone interested, make sure you follow us on our social channels and check out gran-turismo.com to be sure not to miss any of the action and get full details on how to participate, and watch the 2021 Season. No doubt we will see some breath-taking, high-level racing again this year in both the Nations Cup and Manufacturer Series.

ONLINE STAGE 1 – runs from April 21 and concludes on June 26. Competitors from around the world will race online over 10 rounds of the Manufacturer Series (taking place on Wednesdays) and 10 rounds of the Nations Cup (on Saturdays).

‘WORLD SERIES’ 1 & 2 – this period will also see the global top 16 Nations Cup and top 12 Manufacturer Series competitors (initially selected from the 2020 World Finals) taking part in two new ‘World Series’ events that will be broadcast on Sunday, June 6, and Sunday, July 11, respectively.

‘WORLD SERIES SHOWDOWN’ – The end of Online Stage 1 gives a chance to its best 16 Nations Cup competitors to challenge for a place in the World Series and World Finals against the 16 elite players who contested the first two World Series events. At the same time, team duties will return for the Manufacturer Series with 12 teams of three racers contesting their ‘Showdown’ with World Finals points at stake. The Manufacturer Series World Series Showdown will be broadcast on Saturday, August 21 and the Nations Cup on Sunday, August 22.

ONLINE STAGE 2 – Running from July 7 until September 25 a further 10 rounds each for the Nations Cup and Manufacturer Series provide a chance for competitors to win their place in December’s World Finals.

WORLD FINALS – Three days of World Finals will be broadcast on Friday 3, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 December. Friday features the support series, Toyota Gazoo Racing GT Cup. • Das Weltfinale der FIA Gran Turismo Championships 2020 bot drei Tage lange packende Rennen

Das Weltfinale der FIA Gran Turismo Championships 2020 bot drei Tage lange packende Rennen

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Wir alle wissen, was dann passierte.

  • FIA Gran Turismo Championships 2020 World Finals offer three days of thrilling racing

FIA Gran Turismo Championships 2020 World Finals offer three days of thrilling racing

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

The FIA certified Gran Turismo Championships began its third year with great anticipation as it continued to grow and attract new audiences and new players. World Tour 2020 – Sydney in February was a stunning way to start the new season in spectacular surroundings with some thrilling races. Japanese driver Takuma Miyazono took the honours in the Nations Cup and Nicolás Rubilar (CHI), Randall Haywood (USA) and Coque López (ESP) took the win for BMW in the Manufacturer Series.

We all know what happened next. The global pandemic locked down countries and restricted large gatherings and international travel. There would be no more physical World Tour events for the rest of the year.

But, of course, one of the great features of these emerging championships is that the majority of the racing takes place online. The 2020 Online Series saw competitors across five global regions racing each other over the 30 rounds.

Come November, three online Regional Finals were staged with all the action broadcast on YouTube and results available here.

More great racing action selected the fastest Gran Turismo drivers in the world to take part in the World Finals in December.

Not being together physically did not mean we could not create a great arena for racing. A new virtual home for the World Finals 2020 was created, and, with the help of new series partner Sony α (Alpha) cameras, we brought our competitors together via video from 14 different countries (and many different time zones).

The result was, once again, some epic racing.

Day 1 – GR Supra GT Cup

The scene was set by the support event – the one-make GR Supra GT Cup final in association with Toyota. 24 competitors took part in two semi-finals narrowing the field to a 12-player Final.

After trailing by more than 20 seconds at one point in the final race, a combination of superb tyre strategy and lightning-fast driving saw Takuma Miyazono of Japan cross the finish line first. The race win shot him to the top of the standings and handed him the 2020 GR Supra GT Cup title ahead of Brazil’s Lucas Bonelli and 18-year-old Spaniard Jose Serrano.

    Day 2 – Manufacturer Series

Day two of World Finals weekend was devoted to the Manufacturer Series. 36 competitors represented 12 manufacturers – including series Official Partners Toyota and Mazda – in teams of three. The three teammates would contest one race each with the cumulative points total deciding the winning manufacturer.

The Grand Final climax of the Manufacturer Series was a 30-lap contest around Autódromo de Interlagos, where two past Nations Cup World Final champions would go head to head: Brazil’s Igor Fraga, the 2017 winner (and real F3 race driver) representing Honda, and 2018 champ Mikail Hizal of Turkey driving for Subaru.

After some close, exciting racing – and a battle of strategy of how best to use the three different compounds of Michelin tyres required in the race – Hizal emerged with the race win and Championship for a Subaru team that also comprised American Daniel Solis and that man Takuma Miyazono.

Team BMW took second place ahead of Team Mercedes-Benz.

    Day 3 – Nations Cup

The FIA GT Championships 2020 reached its climax with the Nations Cup, pitting the top 16 competitors from all over the world against each other over three races. With the Grand Final worth double points, it came down to two drivers, Miyazono and Italy’s Valerio Gallo, who took their heated battle to the final corner of the last race, keeping everyone watching on the edge of their seats until the very end.

The battle between Miyazono and Gallo began early as the Japanese driver grabbed pole position for Race 1 at the Fuji International Speedway in the exciting new Toyota GR Yaris, with the Italian driver two spots behind him in P3. But Gallo ran a flawless race with a perfect pit stop strategy enabling him to cross the finish line first, while Miyazono came in a disappointing 9th place. But the winner of the Asia-Oceania Region came roaring back in Race 2 by grabbing pole position around the tricky Tokyo Expressway – East Outer Loop street circuit, run in tricky rain conditions on Michelin wet tyres in the Porsche 911 RSR. Miyazono put his car-control skills on full display, besting Jose Serrano of Spain on the final corner for the win. Gallo never found a rhythm in this race, crossing the finish line in 10th.

The Grand Final began with intrigue as the two points leaders, Miyazono and Serrano, had a disappointing qualifying session, managing only a 7th– and 8th-place starting position, respectively. Gallo, seeing a window of opportunity, laid down a blistering lap in the stylish Mazda RX-Vision GT3 Concept around the Sarthe Circuit, home of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, to take pole position for the 10-lap race.

With several different pit-stop strategies employed by the drivers, they put on a grand show as several notable drivers challenged for the lead, including Australia’s Cody Nikola Latkovski, Tomoaki Yamanaka and Ryota Kokubun of Japan and Canada’s Andrew Brooks. After 10 laps, however, it was Gallo who crossed the finish line first, but Miyazono’s 2nd-place finish was enough to hand him the 2020 Nations Cup title, giving him 45 total points to Gallo’s 42 and 3rd-place finisher Kokubun’s 29. He also made it a World Final clean sweep, winning all three events of the weekend to add to his ‘World Tour 2020 – Sydney’ victory and Asia-Oceania Regional Finals win.

While many of us may wish to forget 2020, Takuma Miyazono will remember it with pride for a long time to come.

All three events are available as separate streams on the Gran Turismo TV YouTube channel with results and full news available at gran-turismo.com.

Gran Turismo Sport Adds MAZDA RX-Vision GT3 Concept

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The May content update for Gran Turismo Sport Patch 1.59 will be available tonight, May 21 at 11:00pm. (Internet connection required)

    MAZDA RX-Vision GT3 Concept (Gr.3)

The MAZDA RX-Vision is a concept car announced at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. Based on Mazda’s “Kodo-Soul of Motion” design theme, this was a challenge to create the most beautiful FR sportscar that Mazda could come up with. This car is also powered by the next generation rotary engine “SKYACTIV-R,” a dream that Mazda wants to bring to life in the future.

Overcoming numerous technical difficulties, Mazda successfully introduced a commercial rotary engine through the Cosmo Sport back in 1967. Thereafter as the only manufacturer to mass produce rotary engines, they worked to improve output, fuel economy, and durability, and even took the overall victory in the 1991 Le Mans 24 Hour Endurance Race in their 787B.

The MAZDA RX-Vision GT3 Concept expresses the design beauty of the base car in the form of a more aggressive race car. To meet the performance requirements of the Gr. 3 class, the design draws from the 787B engine concept, with a 4-rotor engine brought back to life using SKYACTIV technology. This new rotary engine is mounted in a lightweight body to achieve unprecedented performance.

    Two Special Events

Mazda’s dream rotary engine racing machine, the RX-Vision GT3 Concept is finally coming to Gran Turismo Sport on Thursday, May 21 at 11:00pm PT. Mazda is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year since its establishment back in January 20, 1920.

Starting on Friday, May 22 in Gran Turismo Sport, Mazda will be hosting two special events commemorating Mazda’s centennial anniversary and the release of the RX-Vision GT3 Concept; the “RX-Vision GT3 Concept Time Trial Challenge,” and the “RX-Vision GT3 Concept Livery Design Contest.”

The top winners from both events will receive special prizes from Mazda including a limited-edition sketch and miniature car. This is a unique opportunity to feel and share the spirit of Mazda’s motorsports and design celebrating its 100th year. We invite everyone to take on this challenge!

  • FIA Certified Gran Turismo Championships 2020 Start April 25

FIA Certified Gran Turismo Championships 2020 Start April 25

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The FIA Certified GT Championships 2020 series is gearing up again and drivers can enter two distinct series. The Nations Cup is an individual competition where players compete under their national flag. In the Manufacturer Series, competitors represent their favorite make against all other participating manufacturers.

The Gran Turismo Championship is certified by the (FIA) Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile. Beginning in 2018 the Championships has seen success in the last years working to shift gears and perceptions of online racing, encouraging supporters, manufacturers, real world racers, media and FIA experts to consider it as a turning point in the future of motorsport.

So, how does the new season look?

    • The FIA Gran Turismo Championships are split into three Stages each consisting of 10 Rounds.
    • The Championships are also split into five Regions across the globe: EMEA; Asia; North America; Central & South America; and Oceania.
    • During each Stage, the top ranked players will be invited to compete against each other in their own Top 16 Superstars races.

All of the Top 16 Superstars races will be broadcast on the official Gran Turismo YouTube channel with the first broadcast of each of the Regions set to take place as follows:

    • EMEA and Asia Regions Sunday: May 3
    • North America and Central & South America Regions: May 4

    How do I participate?

    • Eligible players who wish to join the competition must complete the GT Sport Mode registration form which is available via the ‘Sport Mode’ within the game.
    • After selecting to race in either the ‘Nations Cup’ or ‘Manufacturer Series’ Championship, or both, they will need to register for and compete in online races which take place on given dates and times.
    • Scores are tallied at the end of each Stage by totalling the points earned in their best races from all previous Rounds which will determine their position in the overall ranking.

Where can I see the action?

    • All of the Top 16 Superstars races will be broadcast on the official Gran Turismo YouTube channel with the first broadcast of the EMEA and Asia Regions set to take place on Sunday, May 3, and can be seen in North America; Central & South America; and Oceania on May 4.
    • Due to the current Covid-19 situation, there are currently no live showcases planned to bring together the top leaders of the online stages, but that doesn’t mean the tension on the tracks of these Top 16 Superstars races will be any less compelling.

The April content update for Gran Turismo (Patch 1.57) will be available tonight April, 22 at 11:00pm PDT.

Toyota GR Supra RZ ’20 (N300)

The Toyota Supra ended production in 2002 to the dismay of many fans worldwide, but the car made its comeback in the 2019 North American International Auto Show. This flagship Toyota model, which carries over the inline 6-cylinder engine and rear wheel drive, is headed by chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, who also brought the Toyota 86 to life. Under the slogan ‘Numbers are one thing, feeling is what matters,’ he proceeded to create a car that speaks to the senses of the driver. Optimally balanced with a 50:50 weight distribution and a low center of gravity, it provides powerful acceleration with a twin scroll turbo. The quick handling enabled by the wide body and short wheelbase is a result of a pursuit to achieve an ideal sports car, and its glamorous and elegant form and straight six engine sound combine to give it an aura that is unrivaled by others.

The GR Supra RZ was developed for not only real motorsports but also with competition in Gran Turismo Sport in mind. The further refined 2020 model will also come in highly anticipated new body colors.

    Featured Car: Aston Martin DBR9 GT1 ’10(Gr.3)

The Aston Martin DBR9 GT1 is a racing machine created by Aston Martin Racing to compete in GT1 category races. The base car is the DB9, and its name is taken from the DBR1, the first racing car of the Aston Martin DB series which won the 1959 Le Mans 24 Hour Race with a 1-2 finish, as well as many other sports car races.

In addition to reinforcing the road car chassis, the body panels were all changed to carbon fibre excluding the roof. The gorgeous interior characteristic to Aston Martin road cars has been stripped, with even the dashboard replaced with carbon fibre for less weight. The car was made over 600 kg lighter this way, weighing in at only 1,100 kg.

In addition to a wider fender, there is an additional front underspoiler, side skirts, rear diffuser and wing, plus the bottom of the car is made fully flat for improved aerodynamics.

The 5.9 litre V12 engine has undergone engine ECU tuning, raising its power from the 449 BHP/58.1 kgfm of the road car up to 599 BHP/71.4 kgfm. This is combined with an Xtrac 6 speed sequential transmission.

The DBR9 GT1 won its debut race at the 2005 Sebring 12 hour race, and until the GT1 category disappeared at the end of 2011, it had a spectacular career in racing. In 2006 it won the team and drivers’ titles in ACO Le Mans Series, and in the FIA-GT it won the manufacturers’ title. In 2007 and 2008, it won the GT1 class of the Le Mans 24 hour race 2 years in a row.

The Legendary WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Returns to Gran Turismo Sport

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is a race circuit situated 100 kilometers south of San Jose in the heart of Silicon Valley in Northern California, United States. A technical circuit made up of mid-low speed corners, it is encircled by desert so grip can be an issue as the surrounding sand often blows onto the track. Therefore, drivers need to be able to maintain precise control over their speed at all times as any errors in estimation will result in them going off track or crashing. Its dynamic elevation changes are shaped by the landscape and are a signature of the circuit, with the famed 15-meter downhill-plunging “Corkscrew” its highlight. Laguna Seca is a circuit that offers thrilling racing not seen elsewhere.

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The time has come! 56 of the best Gran Turismo drivers from 19 countries will put everything on the line this week in Monaco to become the Nations Cup and Manufacturer Series Final World Champions.

The Gran Turismo Championship World Finals Events will start this Friday, where the six-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Gran Turismo series creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, will be making a special announcement for an upcoming PlayStation Store DLC for Gran Turismo Sport. Following the announcement, Lewis Hamilton will also be participating in the Pro Am race where he will be teamed-up with a GT Competitor racing against a team of special guests and media drivers.

The battle for first place will continue throughout Saturday and Sunday (November 23 and 24) as the world’s fastest Gran Turismo drivers compete in the Manufacturer Series and Nations Cup Finals through a series of highly competitive races where valuable points are earned.

For the Manufacturer Series, the top 12 manufacturers chosen based on results of the 2019 Manufacturer Series will compete in teams of three. There will be three races – Race 1, Race 2, and a Grand Final with the final result determined based on the total number of points from all three races.

In Nations Cup, 24 competitors each of whom qualified based on results from each of the 2019 Series World Championships will compete in a three-day tournament, including Qualifying, Semi-Final, Repechage, and Grand Final.

Adding to the competitive tension at the Monaco 2019 Series World Finals this weekend is the introduction of the legendary Laguna Seca Raceway. Tucked away in one of the most picturesque regions of America’s west coast, Laguna Seca Raceway is located about 190 km south of San Francisco in the state of California. The historic track was founded officially in 1957, but its roots are firmly embedded in the Pebble Beach Road Races that began in 1950. It has hosted everything from IndyCar races to the World Superbike Championships, and features the most famous S-curve in the world: the Corkscrew.

While this circuit is nothing new to Gran Turismo drivers, this would be the first time Laguna Seca Raceway is appearing in GT Sport, so get ready to witness some epic racing this weekend as they world’s best Gran Turismo drivers will be battling each other on this legendary track for the first time.

In addition to an exciting weekend of intense racing and announcements, two new Gran Turismo partnership vehicles will be unveiled through the live stream:

Gran Turismo fans! We’re excited to finally announce you that the October update Patch 1.47 will be available for everyone starting tonight, October 30, at 10:00 PT (Internet connection required for update) adding the legendary race track, Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, and four new cars including the Porsche Taycan Turbo S ‘19.

    New Vehicles

The following four vehicles will be available:

    • Porsche Taycan Turbo S ’19
    • Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce ’15
    • Mazda Demio XD Touring ’15
    • Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 AMG ’71

Featured Vehicle: Porsche Taycan Turbo S ’19(Gr.X)

The Taycan is Porsche’s answer to the question of sustainable mobility, their first fully-electric vehicle. A sports sedan that combines sports performance with everyday usability, its electric all-wheel-drive system uses two electric motors mounted on the front and rear axles, with the rear-motor encompassing a revolutionary 2-speed transmission allowing unparalleled acceleration and efficiency at high speeds.

Both the Turbo and the Turbo S models normally output 460 kW (616 BHP), but with the overboost feature engaged the output of the Turbo model is boosted to 500 kW (670 BHP), and the Turbo S cranks out a staggering 560 kW (750 BHP). This incredible power output is enabled by the first 800-volt power unit to be seen in a production car, which successfully achieves greater efficiency while drastically reducing charging time.

And of course no effort has been spared in producing dynamic handling. It features Porsche’s superior active suspension management and torque vectoring technology, controlling these systems in sync to provide the best possible driving experience under all driving conditions.

Taycan’s technical advances also extend to its user interface, enabling media and air-conditioning to be operated directly through its intuitive voice control system. The Taycan carries forward Porsche’s historical lineage while signaling a new era of automobiles. Truly a model in which heritage meets the future.

    New Track: Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps

Spa-Francorchamps is located 40km Southeast of Liège, Eastern Belgium’s industrial city. This is a high speed technical circuit that has hosted everything from F1 to endurance races over the years, and the 7+km long track utilizes the mountainous environment of its location for its many ups and downs. For this reason the track is the very definition of dynamic, including many famous turns such as the high speed uphill corner ‘Eau Rouge’, the ultra-high speed left hand ‘Blanchimont’, and the ‘Bus Stop’ chicane has been the scene of many famous battles. The track is praised by many racing drivers for being one of the most challenging in the world. Spa-

    New Vehicles

In total, four new vehicles will be available:

    • Chevrolet Corvette StingRay Racer Concept ’59
    • Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE Package ’18
    • Ferrari 365 GTB4 ʼ71
    • Dodge Super Bee ’70

Featured Vehicle: Chevrolet Corvette StingRay Racer Concept ’59 (Gr.X)

Debuting in 1953, the first generation Chevrolet Corvette would go on to win numerous trophies in the world of racing. The next step was the development of the Corvette SS race car which debuted in 1957, a project led by Zora Duntov — the man often dubbed ‘the father of the Corvette.’

While aesthetically similar to the base Corvette, the underpinnings of the SS were completely different. Designed for use in racing, it featured a shortened tubular frame upon which was mounted a 302 BHP fuel-injected 283 engine, and the car achieved a top speed of 181.4 mph in testing.

However in the same year those plans were scrapped after the American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AMA) agreed to ban the direct participation of manufacturers in racing, following a number of accidents in NASCAR and other motor sporting events. There was a successor to the SS though, in the form of the StingRay Racer.

The car inherited the frame and body covering the engine, almost as is, from the Corvette SS. The final car, created by the newly appointed GM Styling department Chief, Bill Mitchell, and designer Larry Shinoda, also borrowed styling elements from a blackballed next-generation Corvette prototype.

This StingRay Racer entered a variety of races as a private personal race car of Bill Mitchell, and won two consecutive SCCA Class C modified titles for 1959 and 1960. Its styling also had great influence on the design of the 2nd generation Corvette which appeared in 1963.

GT Sport Patch 1.41 Adds 5 New Cars and New Rounds to the GT League

This month’s update includes a selection of new cars including the iconic Honda Civic Type R (EK) loved for its lightweight and compact chassis paired with a lively high revving VTEC engine. In addition, Porsche fans will be able to enjoy driving the first Porsche production car which featured a turbo charged engine in the form of the 911 Turbo (930).

The update will be available for everyone to enjoy tomorrow, July 31, at 12AM PT. (Internet connection required for update)

    New Vehicles

In total, five new vehicles will be available:

    • Porsche 911 Turbo (930) ‘81

    Featured Vehicle: Porsche 911 Turbo (930) ‘81

The first time that the word ʻTurboʼ appeared in the history of Porsche production models was in 1975. This was when they first started commercial sales of the ʻ911 Turboʼ, which implemented all of the turbocharging technologies they had developed and accumulated through their racing activities.

The front and rear overfenders of the car stuck out like a racing car, and a large rear wing occupied its rear end. The 3L aircooled flat 6 was equipped with a single KKK Turbocharger and produced 256 BHP. This allowed the car to reach a cruising speed of 155.3 mph, an incredible level of speed for a production car of its day.

From 1977, the displacement was increased to 3.3 litres, and an air cooled intercooler was added to raise the power to 295 BHP. Until 1985, models with these engines provided the highest specs in the standard lineup.

This version of the Porsche 911 Turbo was produced up to 1989, and is often referred to as the ʻ930 Turboʼ. The name comes from the type number within Porsche development being 930, and because the pre-production model displayed at the Paris motor show a year before its release was displayed as the ʻ930 Turboʼ.

    GT League

Five new rounds have been added to the league including new rounds of the World Hatchback Championship, Nostalgia 1979 and X2019 Competition Endurance Series.

    • Chevrolet Camaro Z28 ’69
    • Toyota Tundra TRD Pro ‘19
    • Toyota Sports 800 ‘65
    • Renault Sport Clio V6 24V ‘00
    • Gran Turismo Red Bull X2019 Competition

Featured Vehicle: Gran Turismo Red Bull X2019 Competition

‘The fastest racing car on earth, free from any and all regulation’: The fan car project of Red Bull Racing and Gran Turismo, has already produced two ultimate racing machines, the X2010 and X2014. But with the opening of the FIA Gran Turismo Championships, a need arose for a competition vehicle that both the driver and spectators could enjoy. This led to the birth of the X2019 Competition.

The X2019 Competition is based on the X2014 Standard. On the exterior, the front wing and the rear end of the body was altered to reduce downforce, in order to suppress the drastic change in aerodynamics that would occur in close battles with another car. The front and rear wheel covers have also been changed to allow fast tire changes. In addition, the 2-liter turbo is replaced by a 3-litre naturally aspirated engine, and a more conventional throttle system has been introduced in order to give it a more attractive racing sound.

New Track: Sardegna – Road Track

A new road course has been added featuring the island of Sardegna, one of a number of Italian resorts surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. Using closed off sections of public roads, this is a high-speed technical street course that features both long full-throttle straights and tight corners. In particular, the ups and downs of the latter half of the course and the diminishing road width allow for some real high stakes, up to the guard rail racing.

    GT League

To support the release of the Red Bull X2019, an endurance series has been added in addition to seven new rounds across the other leagues.

GT Sport 1.38 Update Adds Five New Cars

April’s content update for GT Sport, Patch 1.38, is now available for all drivers, featuring classic European race cars and stylish all-wheel-drive roadsters from the annals of motorsport history.

    New Vehicles

    • Audi TT Coupé 3.2 quattro ‘03
    • Honda Fit Hybrid ’14
    • Toyota Sprinter Trueno 3-door 1600GT APEX (AE86) ’83

    Featured Vehicle: Porsche 962 C ’88 (Gr.1)

The Porsche 962 C is a prototype racing car Porsche that debuted in 1985 in order to compete in the WEC (World Endurance Championships). Porsche developed the 956 starting in 1982 for the WEC, fought under the FIA Group C category. The 956 showed spectacular performance from its debut year, winning races in the WEC as well as dominating the Le Mans 24-hour race. Thereafter, the 956 was improved for the IMSA-GTP of North America which had similar regulations as the WEC, and debuted in 1984 as the 962. Then in the following year of 1985 when the Group C safety regulations were changed to be in line with the IMSA-GTP, Porsche gave birth to the 962 C. It was powered by the flat six twin turbo engine that the Porsche 956 had refined in European races.

The Porsche 962 C brought many victories and championship titles home to Porsche, beginning with winning 7 out of 10 races in the WEC during its debut year. In 1986 it won four races out of nine in the WSPC (World Sports Prototype Championship), which took the place of the WEC. In 1987 it dominated Le Mans, and then placed second here in 1988.
