  • Deep Board Game Strategy in the World of Dune

Deep Board Game Strategy in the World of Dune

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

I saw the original “Dune” movie in 1984; I didn’t know anything about “Dune” at the time, and to be honest, afterwards I didn’t really understand what I’d just seen. But it piqued my interest enough that I read the book and fell in love with Frank Herbert’s tale of grand conflict, interwoven plots and prophecies, and – of course! – massive sand worms.

Forty years later, with a new “Dune” film in theaters from Denis Villeneuve and Legendary Entertainment, tabletop strategy gamers around the world have given Dire Wolf’s board game, Dune: Imperium, a tremendous reception since its release, with numerous awards and recognitions. And now we’re expanding the conflict on Arrakis to a whole new world of gamers in a crossplay digital adaptation on Xbox.

    Dune screensghoty

Dune: Imperium combines deck-building and worker placement to deliver a highly thematic board game experience, where leaders plot and scheme to maneuver their pieces into appropriate positions in a complex world of intrigue. Our game welcomes each player to portray a leader of a Great House of the Landsraad, fighting over control of Arrakis and the spice trade.

Each player is not only waging a land war for precious territory and resources, however. They must also court the key pillars of the Imperium – the Emperor, the Landsraad Council, the Spacing Guild, the Bene Gesserit, CHOAM, even the Fremen – all NPC factions offering strategic advantages to any House who earns their favor. In one game, you might play as Duke Leto Atreides and befriend the Fremen and make an alliance with the Spacing Guild. In another, you might be Baron Harkonnen, exploiting your opponent’s weaknesses with the Bene Gesserit’s secrets and schemes, while tying your destiny to the Emperor.

    Dune screenhot

We take a “what if?” approach to gameplay, staying true to what each faction should feel like within the context of the game, but allowing players to divert from the specific political alliances and events in the book allowing a new, yet authentic, “Dune”narrative to emerge in every playthrough.

This “what if” approach goes even further. In the book, one of the reasons that Duke Leto becomes a target is that the Atreides family has attracted some of the best allies in the Imperium. Thufir Hawat is a celebrated Mentat, Gurney Halleck is an inspirational military leader, while Duncan Idaho is an unrivaled swordsmaster. In Dune: Imperium, all of these powerful figures who loyally served House Atreides in the books are now available to any House to recruit. What if the Beast Rabban rose to power with Duncan at his side? Or if House Richese aligned with Lady Jessica? You get the idea.

    Dune screenshot

Finally, the story of “Dune” is not only about politics. Why would you be recruiting swordmasters and military geniuses if there weren’t wars to be waged? So, we obviously had to inject a healthy dose of military conflict into the game. Every round, there is a conflict that players can engage with, a skirmish or battle to be won. You’ll have to decide whether to use your cards to send your agents into battle or toward other endeavors. Keeping a watchful eye on your opponents is key; if a battle is heating up between two of your rivals, perhaps it’s better to sit it out and instead muster some troops for future conflicts. Much like the films, we’ve made a game where the fate of the Imperium is determined by the choices you make. What strings will you pull? Who will you trust or betray? How much will you claim, destroy, or sacrifice? With every card comes another choice and challenge that takes the story in a new direction, making each game an epic and memorable adventure.

Experience the ultimate blend of strategy and intrigue as you navigate the treacherous landscapes of Arrakis in the award-winning board game Dune: Imperium! * Battle online, locally with AI, or against the formidable House Hagal.
    * Earn Achievements that showcase your prowess as a leader.
    * Embark on more than a dozen Challenges that will test your wit and cunning.
    * Compete for badges in the rotating Skirmish Mode where no two games are the same! Arrakis. Dune. Desert Planet. Raise your banner above the vast wasteland before you. As the Great Houses of the Landsraad marshal their forces and their spies, whom will you influence, and whom will you betray? A tyrannical Emperor. The secretive Bene Gesserit. The shrewd Spacing Guild. The ferocious Fremen of the Deep Desert. The power of the Imperium can be yours, but war is not the only way to claim it. Dune: Imperium blends deck-building and worker placement in a deeply thematic new strategy game where the fate of the Empire hangs on your decisions. Will you seek political allies or rely upon military might? Economic strength or subtle intrigues? A council seat… or a sharpened blade? The cards are dealt. The choice is yours. The Imperium awaits. In Dune: Imperium, you’ll step into the role of one of the leaders of the Great Houses of the Imperium in a struggle to control the planet Arrakis and the invaluable Spice it provides. The game plays out in a series of ten rounds, each of which is defined by a new Conflict on the surface of the planet; some award critical resources, and some provide Victory Points that will propel you to dominance. But choose your battles wisely: spread your forces too thin, and you’ll find your enemies growing too strong to oppose. Each round, you’ll draw a hand of five cards from your deck, which will get stronger over the course of the game as you acquire new cards. Each card can be played in one of two ways: To send an Agent out into the Imperium to gather resources, or to Reveal at the end of the round to purchase new powerful cards. You must maintain a careful balance to get the most of the resources available to you. How will you find your path? As your game progresses, you’ll vie for Influence with four factions of the Imperium: The Emperor, the economically powerful Spacing Guild, the mysterious Bene Gesserit, and the ferocious Fremen of the deep deserts. Earning Influence among the various groups helps you to earn the Victory Points you need…but will you compete with your rivals for their favor, or abandon alliances to pursue other opportunities? Many strategies are at your disposal, and many paths to victory. The cards are dealt. The choice is yours. The Imperium awaits.

  • Raspberry Pi powered e-paper display takes months to show a movie

Raspberry Pi powered e-paper display takes months to show a movie

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

We loved the filmic flair of Tom Whitwell‘s super slow e-paper display, which takes months to play a film in full.

    Living art

His creation plays films at about two minutes of screen time per 24 hours, taking a little under three months for a 110-minute film. Psycho played in a corner of his dining room for two months. The infamous shower scene lasted a day and a half.

Tom enjoys the opportunity for close study of iconic filmmaking, but you might like this project for the living artwork angle. How cool would this be playing your favourite film onto a plain wall somewhere you can see it throughout the day?

The Raspberry Pi wearing its e-Paper HAT

    Four simple steps

Luckily, this is a relatively simple project – no hardcore coding, no soldering required – with just four steps to follow if you’d like to recreate it:

    1. Get the Raspberry Pi working in headless mode without a monitor, so you can upload files and run code
    2. Connect to an e-paper display via an e-paper HAT (see above image; Tom is using this one) and install the driver code on the Raspberry Pi
    3. Use Tom’s code to extract frames from a movie file, resize and dither those frames, display them on the screen, and keep track of progress through the film
    4. Find some kind of frame to keep it all together (Tom went with a trusty IKEA number)
Living artwork: the Psycho shower scene playing alongside still artwork in Tom’s home

    Affordably arty

The entire build cost £120 in total. Tom chose a 2GB Raspberry Pi 4 and a NOOBS 64gb SD Card, which he bought from Pimoroni, one of our approved resellers. NOOBS included almost all the libraries he needed for this project, which made life a lot easier.

His original post is a dream of a comprehensive walkthrough, including all the aforementioned code.

2001: A Space Odyssey would take months to play on Tom’s creation

Head to the comments section with your vote for the creepiest film to watch in ultra slow motion. I came over all peculiar imaging Jaws playing on my living room wall for months. Big bloody mouth opening slooooowly (pales), big bloody teeth clamping down slooooowly (heart palpitations). Yeah, not going to try that. Sorry Tom.

‘SONIC – THE HEDGEHOG’ Der Film

  • Build Demolition Man’s verbal morality ticketing machine

Build Demolition Man’s verbal morality ticketing machine

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

In the 1993 action movie Demolition Man, Sylvester Stallone stars as a 1990s cop transported to the near-future. Technology plays a central role in the film, often bemusing the lead character. In a memorable scene, he is repeatedly punished by a ticketing machine for using bad language (a violation of the verbal morality statute).

In the future of Demolition Man, an always-listening government machine detects every banned word and issues a fine in the form of a receipt from a wall-mounted printer. This tutorial shows you how to build your own version using Raspberry Pi, the Google Voice API, and a thermal printer. Not only can it replicate detecting banned words, but it also doubles as a handy voice-to-paper stenographer (if you want a more serious use).

    Prepare the hardware

We built a full ‘boxed’ project, but you can keep it simple if you wish. Your Raspberry Pi needs a method for listening, speaking, and printing. The easiest solution is to use USB for all three.

After prototyping using Raspberry Pi 4 and various USB devices, we settled on Raspberry Pi Zero W with a small USB mic and Pimoroni Speaker pHAT to save space. A Pico HAT Hacker allowed the connection of both the printer and Speaker pHAT, as they don’t share GPIO pins. This bit of space-saving means we could install the full assembly inside the 3D-printed case along with the printer.

    Connect the printer

To issue our receipts we used a thermal printer, the kind found in supermarket tills. This particular model is surprisingly versatile, handling text and graphics.

It takes standard 2.25-inch (57mm) receipt paper, available in rolls of 15 metres. When printing, it does draw a lot of current, so we advise using a separate power supply. Do not attempt to power it from your Raspberry Pi. You may need to fit a barrel connector and source a 5V/1.5A power supply. The printer uses a UART/TTL serial connection, which neatly fits on to the GPIO. Although the printer’s connection is listed as being 5V, it is in fact 3.3V, so it can be directly connected to the ground, TX, and RX pins (physical pins 6, 8, 10) on the GPIO.

    Install and configure Raspbian

Get yourself a copy of Raspbian Buster Lite and burn it to a microSD card using a tool like Etcher. You can use the full version of Buster if you wish. Perform the usual steps of getting a wireless connection and then updating to the latest version using sudo apt update && sudo apt -y upgrade. From a command prompt, run sudo raspi-config and go to ‘Interfacing options’, then ‘Enable serial’. When asked if you would like the login shell to be accessible, respond ‘No’. To the next question, ‘Would you like the serial port hardware to be enabled?’, reply ‘Yes’. Now reboot your Raspberry Pi.

    Test the printer

Make sure the printer is up and running. Double-check you’ve connected the header to the GPIO correctly and power up the printer. The LED on the printer should flash every few seconds. Load in the paper and make sure it’s feeding correctly. We can talk to the printer directly, but the Python ‘thermalprinter‘ library makes coding for it so much easier. To install the library:

    sudo apt install python3-pip
    pip3 install thermalprinter

Create a file called printer.py and enter in the code in the relevant listing. Run the code using:

    python3 printer.py

If you got a nice welcoming message, your printer is all set to go.

    Test the microphone

Once your microphone is connected to Raspberry Pi, check the settings by running:

    alsamixer

This utility configures your various sound devices. Press F4 to enter ‘capture’ mode (microphones), then press F6 and select your device from the list. Make sure the microphone is not muted (M key) and the levels are high, but not in the red zone.

Back at the command line, run this command:

    arecord -l

This shows a list of available recording devices, one of which will be your microphone. Make a note of the card number and subdevice number.

To make a test recording, enter:

    arecord --device=hw:1,0 --format S16_LE --rate 44100 -c1 test.wav

If your card and subdevice numbers were not ‘0,1’, you’ll need to change the device parameter in the above command.

Say a few words, then use CTRL+C to stop recording. Check the playback with:

    aplay test.wav

    Choose your STT provider

STT means speech to text and refers to the code that can take an audio recording and return recognised speech as plain text. Many solutions are available and can be used in this project. For the greatest accuracy, we’re going to use Google Voice API. Rather than doing the complex processing locally, a compressed version of the sound file is uploaded to Google Cloud and the text returned. However, this does mean Google gets a copy of everything ‘heard’ by the project. If this isn’t for you, take a look at Jasper, an open-source alternative that supports local processing.

    Create your Google project

To use the Google Cloud API, you’ll need a Google account. Log in to the API Console at console.developers.google.com. We need to create a project here. Next to ‘Google APIs’, click the drop-down menu, then ‘New Project’. Give it a name. You’ll be prompted to enable APIs for the project. Click the link, then search for ‘speech’. Click on ‘Cloud Speech-to-Text API’, then ‘Enable’. At this point you may be prompted for billing information. Don’t worry, you can have up to 60 minutes of audio transcribed for free each month.

    Get your credentials

Once the Speech API is enabled, the screen will refresh and you’ll be prompted to create credentials. This is the info our code needs to be granted access to the speech-to-text API. Click on ‘Create Credentials’ and on the next screen select ‘Cloud Speech-to-text API’. You’re asked if you’re planning to use the Compute Engine; select ‘no’. Now create a ‘service account’. Give it a different name from the one used earlier, change the role to ‘Project Owner’, leave the type of file as ‘JSON’, and click ‘Continue’. A file will be downloaded to your computer; transfer this to your Raspberry Pi.

    Test Google recognition

When you’re happy with the recording levels, record a short piece of speech and save it as test.wav. We’ll send this to Google and check our access to the API is working. Install the Google Speech-To-Text Python library:

    sudo apt install python3-pyaudio
    pip3 install google-cloud-speech

Now set an environment variable that the libraries will use to locate your credentials JSON:

    export GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS="/home/pi/[FILE_NAME].json"

(Don’t forget to replace [FILE_NAME] with the actual name of the JSON file).

Using a text editor, create a file called speech_to_text.py and enter the code from the relevant listing. Then run it:

    python3 speech_to_text.py

If everything is working correctly, you’ll get a text transcript back within a few seconds.

    Live transcription

Amazingly, Google’s speech-to-text service can also support streaming recognition, so rather than capture-then-process, the audio can be sent as a stream, and a HTTP stream of the recognised text comes back. When there is a pause in the speech, the results are finalised, so then we can send the results to the printer. If all the code you’ve entered so far is running correctly, all you need to do is download the stenographer.py script and start it using:

    python3 stenographer.py

You are limited on how long you can record for, but this could be coupled with a ‘push to talk’ button so you can make notes using only your voice!

    Banned word game

Back to Demolition Man. We need to make an alarm sound, so install a speaker (a passive one that connects to the 3.5mm jack is ideal; we used a Pimoroni Speaker pHAT). Download the banned.py code and edit it in your favourite text editor. At the top is a list of words. You can change this to anything you like (but don’t offend anyone!). In our list, the system is listening for a few mild naughty words. In the event anyone mentions one, a buzzer will sound and a fine will be printed.

Make up your list and start the game by running:

    python3 banned.py

Now try one of your banned words.

    Package it up

Whatever you decide to use this project for, why not finish it up with a 3D-printed case so you package up the printer and Raspberry Pi with the recording and playback devices and create a portable unit? Ideal for pranking friends or taking notes on the move!

See if you can invent any other games using voice recognition, or investigate the graphics capability of the printer. Add a Raspberry Pi Camera Module for retro black and white photos. Combine it with facial recognition to print out an ID badge just using someone’s face. Over to you.

Next month, comic book fans around the world will congregate at their local cinema to catch the highly-anticipated Marvel Studios’ movie Black Panther. The story follows the superhero T’Challa, also known as Black Panther, who is the king and protector of the fictional African nation Wakanda.

Based on the comic book character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the movie portrays a time where the Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman, returns home and faces a major threat to his kingdom. T’Challa and his fellow Dora Milaje operatives face-off against those conspiring against him.

And, judging from the trailer and movie stills, the costumes of the characters look as breathtaking as the film’s action.

According to the Academy Award-nominated costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who is responsible for creating the fierce garb featured in the Black Panther, 3D printing technology played a major role in film’s attire. In a recent interview with Afropunk, Carter explained how her team utilized the technology to bring the unique style of the Wakanda to the big screen.

3D Printing Technology Adds Unique Flair to Black Panther Costumes

In order to add a completely distinctive look to the costume design, Carter and her team used 3D printing in a variety of ways.

Many of the costumes featured in the film utilize African lace, but the 3D printed components adds a new layer of detail to the fabric. In the interview with Afropunk, Carter explains how they used 3D printing to add textures and patterns to clothing of the characters:

“Part of our process was, you know, we used different techniques to create textures and prints and patterns and one of the ways superheroes are created, we 3D print on fabric which allows you to have a surface that could look beaded but it’s actually molded or screens on fabric. It has a hype to it so that you can make it look like anything.”

For instance, Ramonda, the Queen of Wakanda, wears a Zulu-inspired crown and curved mantle that rests on her shoulders. The costume designer states that this extravagant piece was 3D printed with a special flexible material designed by a UCLA professor. They used a professional-grade 3D printer in Belgium to print the prop, which Carter likens to a design by Gareth Pugh, with this material.

In fact, Carter wanted to keep the look of 3D printing intact, deciding not to paint the piece and instead showcasing it in all its additively manufactured glory.  The technology also enabled her to focus in on the African lace style while also highlighting the advanced technology that is used by the Wakanda people in the film.

You can catch Black Panther in theaters starting February 16. We’ll be sure to look out for more 3D printed props throughout the film.

Earlier today Oculus announced Story Studio, its in-house production team dedicated to producing virtual reality movies. We’ve been seeing VR narrative experiences for years at this point, and while they’ve been getting more and more impressive they’ve still been iterative steps forward. Despite how much we’ve all wanted to it to happen, nothing has stood up, raised its hands, and shouted „I’m the project that proves this crazy thing could actually work.“

Is a new Super Mario Movie coming?!

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Emails leaked during the recent Sony Pictures hack suggest that the paperwork is all but signed. On October 23rd this year, producer Avi Arad (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, Ghost Rider, X-Men) emailed Sony studio chief Amy Pascal with the news „I am the proud father of mario the animated film.“ Pascal forwarded the same email to TriStar’s (a Sony Pictures subsidiary) Tom Rothman, stating that „Avi closed Mario brothers.“

The next day, Arad – who is also developing films based on inFAMOUS, Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid and Uncharted – would email Sony Pictures Animation president of production Michelle Raimo Kouyate, thanking her for a congratulatory basket she had to him sent packed with Mario merchandise. „Let’s build a Mario empire!“ Kouyate replied. The leaks show that Kouyate also forwarded the photo of the basket to Amy Pascal, claiming that she „can think of 3-4 movies right out of the gate on this. So huge!“

The negotiations – which, since the leak, Arad has claimed are still ongoing and haven’t yet been signed – have been going on for most of 2014, and possibly even earlier. Back in February of this year, Kouyate emailed Pascal to tell her that Arad was travelling to Japan „to meet with his Nintendo guy (who he has been courting for a couple years).“ In July, Arad emailed Pascal to inform her that he was „heading to Tokyo … I am going to try and bring back a little plumber. I guess we can all use our pipes cleaned.“

    large

Despite Sony Pictures‘ obvious connection with Sony Computer Entertainment, it would appear that the conflict of interest isn’t a stumbling block for either party; if these emails are to be believed, Nintendo has gotten over that traumatic 1993 movie and is keen to leverage its most famous brand by creating animated movies. It already has a successful and long-running line of Pokémon films, and films based on Mario would surely prove to be even bigger.
