  • Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker: Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida Q&A

Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker: Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida Q&A

    Reading Time: 11 minutes

Every two years since 2013’s relaunch, Final Fantasy XIV fans have gathered in huge conventions spread out across the world, allowing players in North America, Europe and Japan the chance to get a first tantalising peek at what’s coming in the MMORPG’s next content-rich expansion, as well as participate in championships, challenges, and tons of other community activities.

This year, of course, things were a little different. The Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2021 was purely digital, allowing all players across the globe to partake in this special event simultaneously. There were live concerts, cosplay contests and other digitally friendly activities. As ever, the convention kicked off with the Keynote presentation, which revealed a wealth of new content coming to the game’s fourth expansion Endwalker. As is now tradition, the game’s director and producer Naoki Yoshida had an extra special treat for fans to reveal the second new job introduced in the expansion: the creator took to the stage dressed up as a Reaper.

    FFXIV

    FFXIVFFXIVFFXIV

With the Digital Fan Festival now finished and Yoshida back in civilian clothes, we took the opportunity to talk to the creator about the Reaper job, Endwalker’s music, the brand-new male Viera race, and more.

The second new playable job you have revealed, Reaper, is brand new to the Final Fantasy series. How did you decide to go for this job and where did you find inspiration from? Can you tell us a little bit about how Reaper will play, and what will differentiate it from the other melee DPS jobs?

Just to start things off, thank you for taking the time to conduct this interview! Now, onto the questions.

Whenever we brainstorm ideas for each new job in Final Fantasy XIV, our base concept and goal is to make sure that each job has a unique gameplay experience. In this case, before we even reached the stage of finding inspiration, we first looked at the overall job composition and distribution, and from there decided that we wanted to add a melee DPS. It is after that when we looked to come up with ideas as to what kind of job we wanted to make.

Many players around the world, especially those from the West, had been requesting the addition of a job that uses a large, two-handed scythe—we used the idea of a two-handed scythe weapon as a base, and started brainstorming ideas for new jobs from there. I asked several game designers who are involved in the creation of new jobs to take some liberties and submit their ideas—we discussed those ideas to make our decision.

    FFXIV

    FFXIVFFXIVFFXIV

One idea that came up was to utilize not only the player’s own aether, but to combine it with a different source of aether to fight in battle. It was from there that we came up with the idea of a grim reaper from the scythe aspect, and from there it was a fairly straightforward process to settle on the reaper’s current form. A scythe and the grim reaper. It’s unexpectedly straightforward. (laughs)

The major difference between Reaper and the other melee DPS jobs is its use of voidsent “avatars,” which came up during our brainstorm sessions as we discussed the grim reaper idea. The player will not just attack using the avatar, but in the end, you can serve as the host for the avatar, in order to unleash more attacks. For the rest… stay tuned!

    FFXIV

    FFXIVFFXIVFFXIV

Endwalker’s cinematic trailer music is now fully finished and sounds very distinct from past expansions – all the while featuring hints to all of their main themes! Can you tell us how the main theme’s direction and how the collaboration with Architects’ Sam Carter came to be?

The idea of a collaboration began when our team was considering the creation of a main theme that is appropriate for Endwalkerthe conclusion of the Hydaelyn & Zodiark saga. Sound Director Masayoshi Soken, Lead Story Designer Natsuko Ishikawa, and I defined the overall direction we wanted to take in terms of what kind of “voice” we were looking for.

To us, the main theme for the trailers of each FFXIV expansion pack is not merely a song we create for the trailer, but we rearrange the track in different ways so it can be used in game, and oftentimes we use these arrangements to effectively convey definitive moments in the story. Before we jumped into the actual creation of the song itself, Ishikawa brought up her perspective of what she was envisioning for the overall voice—both Soken and myself were quickly on board with her idea, and we were able to swiftly decide on the direction.

    FFXIV

    FFXIVFFXIVFFXIV

We were looking for someone who not only had great vocal range that could reach high notes loudly and clearly, but also someone who could achieve screaming vocals. We conveyed this vision to the FFXIV teams in the US and Europe and asked them if they could find a good fit—Sam was one of the candidates suggested by the overseas teams. We loved his sound and reached out to him shortly after, to which he responded very quickly to agree to take part in the project; from there we worked on recording the vocals, which was done remotely. That is the gist of things, but I believe there will come a time when Soken and Ishikawa would speak to further details on the creation of the theme song.

Regarding the direction of the song itself, I conveyed to Soken that we wanted to represent Hydaelyn and Zodiark as having their own voice, with male and female vocals intertwining with each other in the track. However, it was Soken’s idea to incorporate motifs of each expansions’ theme into the track. Overall, I feel we were able to make a song worthy of our first big story arc conclusion!

    FFXIV

    FFXIVFFXIVFFXIV

We were able to hear for the first time some of the music featuring in a few of the new areas you presented during the keynote. Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired the sounds of Old Sharlayan, Thavnair, and all the other areas we will get to explore in Endwalker? Which is your personal favourite track?

The songs featured in each of the areas within the trailers are still in a sort of mock-up state. Soken allocated the songs to these areas based on his own inspiration, while making sure not to deviate too far from the overall image being portrayed. These may still be changed before they’re finalized for the game, or they could potentially be used as they debuted.

    FFXIV

    FFXIVFFXIVFFXIV

My personal favorite is Mare Lamentorum—the surface of the moon—but whether or not this track will remain in that area for the official release is something only Soken knows. (laughs)

After Endwalker releases, it might be interesting for everyone to give the walkthrough videos another look to try and spot any differences.

To everyone’s surprise, Final Fantasy XIV will have a new playable race! You’ve mentioned the team worked on the race in secret. Can you give us more details as to how Male Viera (and in the future, Female Hrothgar) came to be?

When we released our previous expansion, Shadowbringers, I mentioned that it would be the last time we would add a new playable race to FFXIV. I don’t believe that was a lie, and I have told my development team that same thing. I say this because while adding a new playable race is very enjoyable for our players, it does pose the risk of creating unpleasant side effects, so to speak.

Adding a playable race does not end with just the initial resources needed to create the race (i.e. character modeling; preparations for variations in facial features, hairstyles and head shapes; animations that are unique to each race, etc.). Even following initial implementation, the tasks required with each patch update will multiply. For example, when we implemented the Viera, because their ears are very long, we needed to add a new review flow to check how Viera characters would appear on screen in all cutscenes. Of course, gear you can obtain as you play through the game will also need to be fitted to match the body shapes of the Viera and Hrothgar, and whenever we add emote animations, there will always be two additional sets to consider compared to what we had to do up until this point. This is something that we as a development team need to put effort into, but if these tasks multiply too much, it could cause critical damage to the interval between major updates.

Considering all of this, we ended up with the races I announced for the Shadowbringers expansion. There was a large amount of feedback asking to implement the Viera from Final Fantasy XII, and in addition, I wanted to implement a race that is more beast-like. If this was going to be the last time we added playable races, I decided to implement two races within the means of our bandwidth, despite only having one gender of each race. (One of the biggest reasons I moved forward with this decision is because there were no male Viera in Final Fantasy XII, either.)

However, there was a significant amount of people around the world asking for male Viera and female Hrothgar—which was expected of course—but I was going to follow through with my stance of not adding any more playable races. At the same time, our graphics staff on the development team wanted to explore all options to see what they could do to figure out a way to somehow realize this request from the players.

    FFXIV

    FFXIVFFXIVFFXIV

They spent over half a year using what free time they had in between their normal work on the patches to consider ways to add another playable race. From this they concluded that we could probably squeeze in just one more at this time. Of course, by adding male Viera now, we anticipated people may be vocal about the absence of female Hrothgar and want to know what the situation was. Rather than waiting until (hypothetically) 7.0 to add two playable races at the same time, we realized we could actually ease the impact on our resources if we implemented these one at a time. Ultimately, I decided we should then move forward with implementing one playable race at a time, and I will make sure to explain that to our players: that’s what we did for this upcoming expansion.

We have a desire to let our players enjoy our game even more at the very core. The development team loves our players, so when male Viera are actually implemented, we would love for you to have a smile on your faces when you play as one, and if you could say a quick “Thank you!” to the Graphics team, I’m sure they’ll be very happy. If you can do that, I think it would also serve as motivation for our developers to continue working hard.

The new 24-man raid content, Myths of the Realm, will be an all-original FFXIV story, and speculation has been wild since you’ve revealed the art and title of the next alliance raid series. After a few collaborations (Final Fantasy XII and NieR in the two most recent expansions), what led the decision to create an original FFXIV story? Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired this raid series?

Over the last four years, we have worked on producing two extremely large pieces of crossover content: Return to Ivalice and YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse. This time, since we are coming to the end of the Hydaelyn and Zodiark saga that continued for more than ten years, the development team voiced their desire to create content that will allow for players to come face to face with the different mysteries and lore of FFXIV. I thought, “Well, if that’s the case…” and that’s simply how the theme was decided.

Of course, we would love to consider other exhilarating crossovers with other titles down the line, but for now, we want to push the limits of our experiences and ideas to create this new alliance raid.

    FFXIV

    FFXIVFFXIVFFXIV

And last, but perhaps most importantly, do we have any chance at all of getting Soken’s “La Hee” Fan Fest version in game as an orchestrion roll?

I don’t know… One can only describe this sound as, well… unique, but I am not sure we’d want to implement that in-game… If a brand-new player who doesn’t have any context hears that, wouldn’t they freak out and delete their account? (laughs)

  • Introducing Sifu, an intense Kung-Fu experience coming in 2021

Introducing Sifu, an intense Kung-Fu experience coming in 2021

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Sloclap team has been working hard for the past two years and we are all very proud to announce Sifu, our new game coming to PS4 and PS5 this year.

Introducing Sifu, an intense Kung-Fu experience coming in 2021

After releasing Absolver, we chose to build on our experience creating exciting and innovative martial arts gameplay, and used everything we learned from our first game to create a 3rd person action game featuring intense Kung-Fu combat with unprecedented authenticity. Inspired by our passion for Kung Fu, and martial arts movies in general, we decided to focus on a single-player experience to build an immersive adventure featuring deep and challenging gameplay.

Sifu puts you in control of a young Kung-Fu student who has dedicated his very soul to his quest for vengeance. After his family was murdered by a squad of mysterious assassins, our hero has spent the next eight years of his life preparing his revenge.

The day of reckoning has finally come, and he will hunt down the murderers one by one without letting anyone get in his way. To overcome the odds stacked against him, he will rely on his Kung Fu skills, and on a magical pendant that revives him upon death. This magic has a cost though: our hero gets older every time he comes back to life. How long will you manage to survive before having to start his quest again? Is one life enough to have Kung Fu?

On the path of vengeance: The hunt for the assassins will take you through the hidden corners of the city, from the gang-ridden suburbs to the cold hallways of the corporate towers.  You have got one day, and countless enemies on your way. Time will be the price to pay.

Adaptation is the way: Careful positioning and clever use of the environment to your advantage are key to your survival. Use everything  at your disposal:  throwable objects, makeshift weapons, windows and ledges… The odds are stacked against you, and you will be offered no mercy.

Training never ends: Kung Fu is a path for the body and the mind. Learn from your errors, unlock unique skills, and find the strength within yourself to master the devastating techniques of Pak-Mei Kung-Fu.

We are excited to finally share our work with the PlayStation community. We are committed to making Sifu a unique experience of martial arts action, as well as an authentic and respectful homage to the Kung-Fu genre.

Stay tuned for more news and content in the coming weeks.

  • Welcome to Knockout City, the dodgebrawl capital of the world

Welcome to Knockout City, the dodgebrawl capital of the world

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hey everyone, I’m Josh Harrison, and I’m the Marketing Manager at Velan Studios. We’ve been working on a team-based action game called Knockout City, and we’re beyond excited to have finally revealed it to the world. Knockout City is a game where you’ll team up with friends to take down rival Crews in epic dodgeball battles.

Welcome to Knockout City, the dodgebrawl capital of the world

As a dodgebrawlin’ denizen of Knockout City, you’ll make a name for yourself through your skill and style. You’ve learned to flex your abilities, you’ve shown up looking your best, so now it’s time to chuck dodgeballs at your rivals’ faces. This is a multiplayer experience unlike anything you’ve ever played before, so I’m here to take you through what sets Knockout City apart.

The basics of a brawl come down to throwing and catching, but you’ll need to master positioning, timing, and teamwork if you want to take home a win. Catching a ball with perfect timing powers it up, making it faster when you throw it back at your opponents. Trick shots let you lob a ball over objects or curve them around corners. The dreaded Fake Throw can screw with your rival’s catch timing, giving you a window to knock them out for real.

Dodge out of the way of incoming balls, or tackle opponents to disorient them and make them drop any balls they might be carrying. Don’t let anyone tell you assists don’t matter, either, because a quick pass to your teammates will power up the ball and let you hit an enemy from a better angle. All of these skills combine to give you a recipe for success on streets and rooftops across the city.

Don’t worry about being caught empty-handed—everyone in Knockout City can drop to the ground, Ball Up, and become a weapon for their teammates to use against the other team. Use this ability to move quickly into the fray or get a quick knockout when your rival least expects it. Charge up a teammate in your hands to perform an Ultimate Throw: launch them high into the air so they crash back onto the battlefield in a huge, instant-KO explosion. There’s nothing more satisfying than wiping an entire team off the map in one move.

The only thing better than dominating in Knockout City is looking good while you’re dominating in Knockout City. You’ll have near-endless ways to modify your style, thanks to an included progression system that gives you hundreds of cosmetics and customization options to choose from. Pick your brawler’s appearance, with a range of looks from badass to hilarious. Beyond what you’re wearing, we want you to add attitude and personality to everything from your KO Effect to your Victory and Defeat Poses to your Glider. (Oh, did I mention you can pop out a hang-glider at any time? Because you can.)

Your team will have your back in a specific match, but your Crew has your back forever…  or at least as long as you want to rise to glory together. Up to 32 friends can Crew up, offering a whole new way to customize your looks. You’ll all sport your holographic Crew logo on the back of your jackets and arrive to your fights in your Crew’s stylish hovercar. Each Season, you’ll also have weekly challenges to complete as a Crew, unlocking more options to define your Crew’s unique identity.

Take a stroll through Knockout City, and you’ll find plenty of places worth defending with your Crew, each with unique mechanics to keep your scuffles interesting. High winds in Rooftop Rumble will boost your glider forward. A giant wrecking ball will fling even the toughest brawlers around in Concussion Yard. Knockout Roundabout is the home to endless traffic, perfect for a drive-by KO or rolling underneath for a fast getaway. Back Alley Brawl, our most recently announced map, has a series of tubes that’ll suck you up and spit you out across the map for a speedy escape or a new angle of attack on your opponents. Between these and more locations to be announced in the future, there are plenty of places you’ll be marking your territory.

Beyond the standard dodgeball, you’ll have plenty of Special Balls at your disposal to keep matches feeling fresh and dynamic. The Bomb Ball starts ticking when you pick it up, and after a short time, it (unsurprisingly) explodes. Trap your opponents within the Cage Ball for an opportunity to turn them on their teammates or toss them off the side of the map. If you want some serious air, grab the Moon Ball! You’ll jump higher, like you’re on the surface of the moon, and hitting an enemy with it will practically knock them into outer space! Just announced today, our Sniper Ball will lock on to an enemy far across the map and snap to the target at crazy-fast speeds when thrown. Stay tuned, because we have more to announce here, too.

Our standard game mode is Team KO, a multi-round 3v3 match, but we’ll be introducing over 20 new playlists by the end of the year. Another you’ll be able to try is Face Off, where you and one opponent are pitted against each other in a slowly shrinking battlefield, armed with nothing but your wits and a bunch of dodgeballs. There are plenty more playlist reveals coming soon, including some surprises that can only exist with the unique mechanics of Knockout City.

You can catch Knockout City on PlayStation 4 for $19.99 / €19.00 when it comes out on May 21, with backwards compatibility and enhancements for PlayStation 5 players. We’ll be celebrating our launch by letting everyone on all platforms play free for a limited time. If you’re looking to check it out sooner, we’re hosting an upcoming cross-play beta, and we’d love for you to try it with your friends, no matter how you’re playing. Sign up for beta access* to get an early taste of what dodgebrawl glory feels like.

Knockout City has been in development for four years, and the whole team at Velan Studios is delighted to be sharing it with you soon in partnership with EA Originals. Keep tabs on all things Knockout City by following us on Twitter and Discord.

    See you soon, brawlers.

  • Journey inside the Ultravoid with new Solar Ash gameplay

Journey inside the Ultravoid with new Solar Ash gameplay

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hey everyone, I’m Alx Preston, the Creative Director of Heart Machine. You may know our previous game, Hyper Light Drifter.

Today I’m here to reveal more details than ever about our highly ambitious upcoming game, Solar Ash.

Journey inside the Ultravoid with new Solar Ash gameplay

The transition from 2d to 3d took some time for us – building the right pipeline, gathering the right folks. We feel we’ve successfully been able to make that jump, and we hope you feel that way too.

Solar Ash is a third-person action platformer with massive scale and a focus on fluidity in movement. We really wanted to push scale on multiple fronts. Our traversable world is huge, featuring sunken cities, vast water shelves, and dangerous lava zones for players to fight through and explore.

You’ll play as Rei, a Voidrunner looking to save her home world from the Ultravoid itself – a massive black hole that swallows entire worlds.

Fortunately, Rei is well equipped for this task with incredible speed, agility, and other tools to help on her mission. She covers vast distances surfing across the ashen clouds with ease. She seamlessly grapples across gaps and up huge vertical spaces. She gracefully grinds on rails littered throughout the world to reach greater heights and secret enclaves.

Combat is fluid, simple, and satisfying. We want to empower the player, showcasing just how skilled Rei is at what she does. As you progress, you’ll encounter larger and more twisted creatures, hinting at the more insidious nature of this maw of the cosmos. These encounters will only escalate in challenge and scale the deeper you explore, requiring greater timing and fine platforming skills to complete.

Eventually, Rei will fight the largest creatures in the Ultravoid: massive remnants hewn from bone and viscose, tendriled, sinewy sludge. These beasts hold the key to progressing her quest and saving her world. Rei is determined to overcome this (literally) huge challenge at any cost.

It’s an exciting, scary relief that we’re able to finally showcase what Heart Machine has been working on all this time. Solar Ash is an experience we are deeply proud of – everything from the world we’ve built, to the amazing team we’ve become and, eventually, the game we’ll be able to put in front of you later this year on PS5 and PS4.

Since its launch in 2014, Five Nights at Freddy’s has grown at an exponential rate, gaining a unique following as a “horrific” cult-classic. Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza is no longer limited to small pizzerias, as they have now opened the Mega Pizza Plex in Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach.

Security Breachis by far the most ambitious Five Nights at Freddy’s game yet!

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach has been a massive undertaking. The Mega Pizza Plex is enormous. What you are about to see barely scratches the surface of the horror you will experience when you step out of the security office and explore the darkened hallways, arcades and Fazbear attractions.

Don’t worry, this won’t be the last you’ll hear from us as we still have a few more tricks up our sleeves, but you’ll just have to wait and see what we have in store! In the meantime, sit back, relax, and grab a slice of pizza.

Oddworld: Soulstorm arrives on PS4 and PS5 April 6

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hi, I’m Lorne Lanning, co-founder of Oddworld Inhabitants, and today I’m excited to share big news about Oddworld: Soulstorm and debut new footage in today’s State of Play.

When I start the creative process, I sometimes find myself dreaming of the day when I can share my creation with you. That dream is nearly a reality because Oddworld: Soulstorm will launch on April 6th on PS4 and PS5. All of us at Oddworld are excited to share the second chapter in Abe’s quintology with you.

I’ve said this before, but it is worth repeating, your support helped us more than I can put into words. Not only has your support helped us, but the support we have received from PlayStation, Epic Games, Unity, and Microids has been vital.

To all of you, thank you!

The other big news I want to share with you is that Oddworld: Soulstorm is one of your PlayStation Plus games for April 2021. PlayStation Plus members will be able to download the PS5 version of the game at no extra cost during that time.*

Oddworld: Soulstorm arrives on PS4 and PS5 April 6

In Oddworld: Soulstorm, you reprise the role of Abe the Mudokon, accidental hero turned leader of a growing revolution. We first met Abe in the first game of the quintology, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty. Abe is a floor-waxer at Mullock the Glukkon’s RuptureFarms meat packing plant.  He accidentally learns about Molluck’s plan to turn Mudokons into tasty treats. He wants to save himself, but he’s compelled him to try to save everyone. His selfless act is the spark that sets the revolution ablaze.

Soulstorm is the second game in quintology. In it, you will explore massive cinematic scale and weird and wonderful 2.9D environments filled with breathtaking visuals. 2.9D lets you venture into the world. It creates greater scale and action. Adds depth and immersion.

The sense of immersion is even greater thanks to game changing haptic feedback. You can feel Abe’s heartbeat during suspense filled action sequences, made possible by PlayStation’s revolutionary DualSense wireless controller.

Try to save the more than 1,000 Mudokons. There is power in many. They will help you solve puzzling puzzles. And, you can harness their collective energy.

As you traverse the 2.9D environments, you will scavenge for necessary resources by pickpocketing enemies, looting lockers, and sifting through trash cans. Exchange them at vending machines to get products that you can use or even, for the first time in Oddworld history, give to your followers. This gives you more agency in how you chose to conquer the game’s many challenges.

And there will be times when you need an armed army of Mudokons behind you. The oppressive Glukkons have other plans and will use every means at their well-funded disposal, from propaganda to brute force.

Abe’s most iconic ability, his mystic power of possession will allow you to take control of your foes and use their strength and weapons against them. Possession can be used to activate locks and switches to gain entrance to restricted or hidden areas in the game.

The Oddworld universe is diverse. Some areas will require hard core action and others will demand stealth and planning. From dark and dangerous caves to heavily fortified industrial sites or ancient lands and ruins, there are plenty of opportunities for you to decide if you need to employ force or take a more passive approach. The choice is yours.

Soulstorm won’t be easy. You and Abe will be hunted by a powerful army, backed by a shady and wealthy corporation. If that wasn’t bad enough, you will face even more dangers in the form of natural obstacles, ancient traps, and industrial hazards to dodge, cross and avoid if possible.

Abe’s journey is one of hope and freedom. The game has a rich and engaging narrative that is very dark with a twisted sense of humor that shines a light on the ironies that exist in the human condition.

Your actions in-game will decide the fate of Abe and all you manage to liberate along with way.

Save them Abe! Save them all!

  • Deathloop’s ‘Déjà Vu’ trailer: a stylish look at Colt’s journey through Blackreef

Deathloop’s ‘Déjà Vu’ trailer: a stylish look at Colt’s journey through Blackreef

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Everyone knows the feeling of déjà vu – that sensation that you’ve experienced something before. For Colt, this feeling is near-constant. Trapped in a time loop, Colt has been experiencing déjà vu for as long as he can remember, which actually isn’t very long because he has amnesia and only really remembers his recent past. That might explain all the déjà vu, honestly. Every time the day loops it’s a struggle to remember everything so he can use the knowledge he has to push himself forward and, hopefully, off the island of Blackreef. Colt sets his sights on a new target – the Visionary, “Ramblin’” Frank Spicer – in the latest Deathloop trailer.

Deathloop’s ‘Déjà Vu’ trailer: a stylish look at Colt’s journey through Blackreef

    The Sounds of Blackreef

The inhabitants of Blackreef are living out an endless party. Every looping day is a celebration of chaos, grandiosity, and debauchery. This spirit has infused itself into all elements of the game – from the drunken spectacles taking place in the streets, to the brightly colored and sometimes ominous graffiti covering the island, and even to the music you’ll hear in each of the four districts dividing Blackreef.

“Along with the different visual influences in each district, we wanted to ensure players would hear different things between the different regions of the island,” says Audio Director Michel Tremouiller. “The scores of each district are changed by the architecture and vibe of that particular location, as well as the Visionaries that call those areas home. Where Aleksis’ Updaam is all psyche-rock and vintage sci-fi tones, an area like Frank Spicer’s home of Fristad Rock will be more melancholic guitars swaying to the rhythm of the waves.”

With Deathloop, Audio Director Michel Tremouiller was tasked with creating a musical style as unique as Blackreef itself. But before he could even begin to define each district, he needed to determine the overarching style.

“First, we define the most important elements we want to be clear to the player and highlighted in the game,” says Michel Tremouiller, Audio Director. “Usually you have to focus on a few keywords that describe the game, and that’s a good starting point for our work on the audio team. With Deathloop – as with all previous Arkane productions – we have a host of interesting key words and layers that make up this universe. Deathloop has keywords like magical, military, scientific, mysterious, Northeim, carnival… the list goes on. But of course, all these concepts cannot be injected into just one style of music. We make complex and original universes, so it’s impossible to copy a pre-existing music style.”

“It’s psyche-rock music tinged with vintage sci-fi, jazz, and various exotic and traditional sounds,” Tremoiller does his best to sum up the sound of Deathloop. “It’s sometimes frenetic, sometimes stretched and mysterious… just like the island of Blackreef.”

    Sebastien Mitton’s Deathloop Watchlist

Want even more of a peek behind the scenes of Deathloop? Art Director Sebastien Mitton pulled together a list of movies and the themes that inspired much of the team’s vision for the island of Blackreef. Get ready for Deathloop’s launch with this watchlist.

    • Skyfall (2012 | dir. Sam Mendes) – Grandiose décor and the Scottish highlands
    • Point Blank (1967 | dir. John Boorman) – An empty and arid world theater of revenge
    • The Wicker Man (1973 | dir. Robin Hardy) – A murder puzzle on a Scottish island
    • Under the Volcano (1984 | dir. John Huston) – A tortured soul during the Day of the Dead in Mexico

    • The Warriors (1979 | dir. Walter Hill) – Hunter and hunted

The Last of Us Day 2020 Preview: Celebrate with New Posters, Collectibles, and More

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

Hey everyone! It’s been a few months since we launched The Last of Us Part II in June, but we’ve been keeping busy. In August, we launched our free Grounded Update*, which added new features like Permadeath Mode, Grounded Difficulty, and other bonuses to the game. We’ve also been hard at work on preparations for The Last of Us Day, our annual community celebration, which kicks off tomorrow September 26. We have a lot of exciting content lined up, which you’ll be able to find on TheLastofUs.com/TLOUDay tomorrow starting at 9:00am PT / 6:00pm CET, but we wanted to give you a little preview in the meantime. Let’s get right to it!

The Last of Us Part II Original Soundtrack 2XLP Vinyl + Limited Edition Posters

We love our good friends at Mondo and the incredible artists they collaborate with. We’ve created some special things together for The Last of Us Day in the past, and this year, we wanted to go even bigger. Tomorrow, Mondo will be debuting a special vinyl release of The Last of Us Part II Original Soundtrack by Gustavo Santaolalla and Mac Quayle and debuting not one, but two new screenprinted posters.

Renowned illustrator Tula Lotay designed the stunning album art for this special 2XLP release, as well as two beautiful new The Last of Us Part II-inspired posters. All will be revealed and available for pre-order tomorrow starting at 9:00am PT/12:00pm ET/6:00pm CET.

The vinyl will be available while supplies last, but the posters will be timed editions with pre-orders that end on 9:59pm PT on Wednesday, September 30 (1:59am ET / 9:00am CET Thursday, October 1). In other words, after pre-orders close, they’re gone and won’t be printed again. Keep your eyes on MondoShop.com for more information and don’t miss out!

Announcing The Last of Us Board Game

Tabletop gamers, rejoice! The Last of Us Board Game is coming. We’re excited to announce our new partnership with the talented team at CMON, makers of Bloodborne: The Board Game and God of War: The Card Game, to develop a brand new board game for The Last of Us. Our love of games–digital, card, board, or otherwise–knows no bounds, and we couldn’t be more excited to be bringing the characters and world of The Last of Us to a tabletop format. Development is already underway, and we can’t wait to share more info with you when the time is right. For more info, be sure to check out the full announcement over on CMON.com.

The Last of Us Part II Abby Cosplay Guide

Each week on our social media channels, we spotlight the meticulously crafted costumes, props, and makeup created by The Last of Us cosplay community. We’re continually in awe of the level of thought and care that goes into representing our characters, which is why, last year, we wanted to share our support by releasing an official cosplay guide for Ellie. The response was incredible, and we’re proud to follow it up with an official cosplay guide for Abby.

This downloadable PDF features high-resolution renders of every facet of Abby’s design, including detailed shots of her clothing, weapons, equipment, and hair style. You can also find information about materials, color reference, and more.

We’ve already received some incredible Abby cosplay submissions in the months since launch, so we can’t wait to see what you can do with this additional reference. Be sure to share your cosplay and other creations with us via naughtydog.com/ugc.

New The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II Premium Statues

For all of the collectors out there, we have new The Last of Us statues to add to your display cases!

First up, we’ve collaborated once again with Gaming Heads — makers of the Clicker statue we revealed for The Last of Us Day 2015 — to produce a new 16” Ellie statue from The Last of Us Part II that is available in three unique editions. In the base version, Ellie stands at the ready with her machete, while the Stealth Edition adds interchangeable arms and a head piece that allow you to alter Ellie’s expression and swap out her machete for a bow. A special Hunter Version offers everything in the Stealth Edition, but features a special paint finish. All three can be pre-ordered starting today and more info can be found via GamingHeads.com.

Next, for the fans that have been with us from the beginning, we have a brand new modular statue from Mamegyorai Collectibles. Sculpted and painted by Masato Ohata, these two individual statues of Ellie and Joel stand at 1/9th scale and can be displayed individually or adjoined to form a unified scene. The set is available for pre-order via Mamegyorai’s website and will ship in March of next year.

Free New The Last of Us Part II PS4 System Theme

As we thought about introducing players to the experience of The Last of Us Part II, we wanted the main menu to symbolize the journey you were about to take and, once finished, the one you’ve taken. For The Last of Us Day, we wanted to take that final parting image of the boat washed ashore with the waves gently rolling onto the beach and make it into a dynamic system theme, so that you can enjoy it anytime you load up your PS4 system — and we’re making it available to everyone for free. Get it now at PlayStation Store.

To top it off, we’re also making all of our existing The Last of Us Part II themes and avatars free on PlayStation Store from now until Monday, September 28 at 11:59pm PT. Don’t miss out.

Save on The Last of Us Remastered, Left Behind, and on The Last of Us merch

Oh, we’re not done! Rounding out our celebrations for The Last of Us Day, PlayStation Gear Store is introducing new items to their The Last of Us collection, including the Joel Funko Pop! (while supplies last) and a brand new t-shirt and mug available tomorrow. There will also be a limited number of the special edition The Last of Us Part II Taylor 314ce and GS Mini guitars back on the store for The Last of Us Day — for one day only — so if you missed an opportunity to grab one in July, you’ve got another shot.

Existing The Last of Us merch not added for The Last of Us Day will be discounted up to 40% on PlayStation Gear Store and PlayStation Store will be hosting a The Last of Us Day Sale with a 50% discount on The Last of Us Remastered, The Last of Us: Left Behind, and select The Last of Us Remastered Factions Bundles all weekend.

The Last of Us Day PlayStation Gear Store and PlayStation Store sales start today and end on Monday, September 28 at 11:59pm PT!

The Last of Us Part II Photo Mode Contest

With every Photo Mode post we receive on social media, we get to see our own game through a new lens — yours. The way you’ve been able to capture the characters, landscapes, and emotions of The Last of Us Part II in Photo Mode is so inspiring and for The Last of Us Day, we wanted to share our appreciation. That’s why, we’ll be kicking off a brand new The Last of Us Part II Photo Mode Contest for the month of October. Each week, we’ll select winners that will receive a coveted Ellie Edition and runners up that will earn a The Last of Us Part II Limited Edition DualShock 4.

To enter, all you have to do is capture your masterpiece in The Last of Us Part II’s Photo Mode and share it with us via NaughtyDog.com/ugc and include your name, address, and date of birth between Thursday, October 1 12:01am PT and Thursday, October 29 11:59pm PT. Top Five Tips for Nailing a Legendary Combo

Every skater has to start from somewhere. Million-point combos are rarely done by accident, and not knowing your Nollie from your Fakie could lead to a few unplanned and unfortunate bails.

Don’t sweat not being the G.O.A.T. – you’ll get there in time, especially with these five tips for creating some epic combos:

    5. New Tricks Up Your Sleeve

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 includes tricks that existed after the original two games, including the Revert, which allows a skater to pivot their board off a vert surface to keep a combo going, and Spine Transfers, which allows a skater to gap between two vertical surfaces that are back-to-back.

These, as well as a few others, add a new school spin to the classic THPS 1 and 2 formula, and could be crucial to landing that lengthy and ludicrous combo.

In short, do your best to learn, experiment, and eventually add these new moves to your bag of tricks as soon as possible.

    4. Amp Up the Difficulty

The more difficult the trick, the more points it awards when it is landed.

Special Tricks obviously award the most points and are the most difficult tricks to land, but there’s plenty of hard Air, Grind, Flip, Lip, and Manual tricks that award more score than simpler ones. These usually involve flicking the controls in a diagonal direction or by pressing a button multiple times.

Remember that there is a smaller margin for error when trying to land difficult air tricks, or keeping balance on harder Grinds, Lip and Flatland tricks, so practice them often before incorporating them into combos.

Trick Transitions and Flatland Tricks also fall under more difficult maneuvers, as throwing in a few button presses during a grind, lip, or manual trick can boost a combo multiplier or score significantly. Again, land these a few times in practice first before sprinkling them into your lines, or you might wind up bailing at the end of a potential legendary line.

    3. Take a Tour of the Parks

Tours, the new Single Player experience that follows the original two games’ Career modes, offers the opportunity to skate around every non-custom park in the game as you complete objectives and participate in competitions.

Outside of offering a fun and engaging challenge, Tours is essentially a crash course in mastering each park, with some goal-based objectives lined up in a way so that you can learn where Gaps and other combo starting areas are.

Plus, Tours are full of Stat Points which, when grabbed, can be used to boost your favorite skater’s attributes. Which leads to our next tip…

    2. Customization is Key

Both real and created skaters have fully customizable Stats, which are crucial to starting, maintaining, and finishing combos.

Each skater already has statistics that lean towards a specific combo style, but this preference can be furthered by fine-tuning and adding to their existing Stats.

When customizing a skater’s Stats, it’s best to max out specific attributes that are to your preferred combo style. For example, those who love grind-heavy lines should shoot for upping the Rail Balance attribute, while those looking to one-up the Birdman and pull off a 1080-degree spin should max out the Spin attribute.

Move sets can also be customized, allowing you to map difficult tricks to whatever button combinations are most comfortable to you, or give a skater more Special Moves to really ramp up their point-scoring potential.

    1. Learn from the Pros Online*

The Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 and 2 community rosters has plenty of innovative virtual skaters, and some of them can be seen skating around the public Multiplayer playlists.

With a variety of maps and modes on offer in these lobbies that hold up to eight players, you could gain some inspiration from those who string together incredible lines in order to win games.

Don’t get discouraged by those awesome skaters if they wind up taking over the lobby; learn from their lines so that one day, you may be landing that Legendary Combo and getting your own statue for your epic skills.

Introducing PlayStation Indies and a day of captivating new games

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hi everyone! As some of you may have noticed, I have long been a big fan of indie games, and ever since I was appointed as Head of Indies Initiative for PlayStation in November the last year, I have been working closely with all departments at Sony Interactive Entertainment to elevate our efforts to help make indie developers’ lives easier and their titles shine in this super competitive videogame market.

I’m pleased to formally announce the PlayStation Indies initiative. With PlayStation Indies, we hope to spotlight and support the best of the best indie games being published on PlayStation and the entire indie community as a whole. Our goal is to make PlayStation the best place to develop, find, and play great indie games.

Introducing PlayStation Indies and a day of captivating new games

The indie community is increasingly important for the future of the video game industry, as AAA game development has grown so financially demanding that big companies are finding it harder to take risks to invest in new concepts that may or may not work. We trust indie developers with strong vision will continue to bring ideas that have never been tried before, creating whole new genres of games and advancing the art and meaning of video games. PlayStation has always embraced games with completely new concepts, like PaRappa the Rapper, Katamari Damacy, LittleBigPlanet, and Journey, and we look forward to seeing what surprising new ideas will come next!

I was so excited to see the strong reactions to the amazing indie titles featured in the PS5 Future of Gaming event a few weeks ago. Do they not look charming and interesting? I, for one, could not get the Bugsnax song out of my head for a few days since the show went live.

While details are still forthcoming, we are also happy to confirm a new indie title will join the PlayStation Now service every month, starting with Hello Neighbor in July. Please look out for our monthly PS Now posts for more information!

Today, alongside news of the PlayStation Indies initiative, we’re happy to debut nine imaginative and exciting titles coming to both PS4 and PS5. Stay tuned throughout the morning for these reveals, which we’ll gather up here once they’ve all concluded. Can’t wait to hear what you think!

  • How the Raspberry Pi Foundation is responding to the novel coronavirus

How the Raspberry Pi Foundation is responding to the novel coronavirus

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

In this blog post, I want to share an update on how the Raspberry Pi Foundation is responding to the novel coronavirus and what it means for our work to support people all over the planet to change their world through technology.

The situation is changing rapidly, and we’ll update this blog as our response develops.

    Follow local public health advice

The main guidance to our teams, partners, and community members is that they should follow the local public health advice in the country or region where they are based.

The spread of the virus is at different stages in different parts of the world. That’s one reason why the public health advice differs so much depending on where you are. This is a new threat and there are competing theories about the best course of action. We see that in the different approaches that are being taken by different governments around the world.

To state what I am sure is obvious, we aren’t epidemiologists or public health experts. That’s why our approach is to follow the local public health advice.

Changes to our schedule of events

We’ve been working closely with venues, partners, sponsors, and community members to keep our programme of events under review. There aren’t currently any restrictions on events that affect the specific dates and places where our events are being held. The problem really is one of uncertainty.

Until now, we’ve taken a ‘wait and see’ approach for events, following the local public health guidance closely and working on the assumption that we will go ahead as planned, unless the local advice is to cancel. However, over the past couple of days, we have become increasingly concerned that we are asking people to book travel and make practical arrangements when we think that there is a high likelihood that we will have to cancel events at the last minute.

We have therefore taken a number of very difficult decisions about our events programme.

Cambridge Computing Education Research Symposium, 1 April 2020

We have decided to hold the Research Symposium as an online-only event. Plans for this are well developed, and we are looking forward to bringing together an amazing community of researchers, academics, and practitioners to discuss cutting-edge research on how young people learn computing and computer science. Registration remains open and we will provide updates on the event via the symposium web page.

Coolest Projects UK, 4 April 2020 in Manchester, and Coolest Projects International, 6 June 2020 in Dublin

We have decided to cancel both upcoming Coolest Projects events. This was a really tough decision. In both cases, there is just too much uncertainty for us to continue to ask young people, parents, mentors, and volunteers to make travel and other arrangements. We are exploring options for providing an online experience that will enable the young creators to still showcase their amazing projects, so please don’t stop work on your project. We will provide further updates on the Coolest Projects website.

    Clubs and community-led events

We have issued guidance to the tens of thousands of brilliant human beings that organise Code Clubs, CoderDojos, Raspberry Jams, and other community-led events all over the world. Our message is that they should follow the local public health advice in their country or region and take decisions on whether to cancel their club or event in consultation with the venues that host them. If you are a club leader or an event organiser and you have a concern, please contact us in the usual way, or email us at [email protected]

We are working with community members and partners to increase our support for online learning, and we’ll say more about this soon. For now, clubs (and everyone else) can access all of our free learning resources online as usual.

    Raspberry Pi computers

As a organisation with a global supply chain that makes and sells products all over the world, we have been working with our partners to minimise the impact of the pandemic on the availability of our products, and on the wellbeing of those involved in our supply chain and distribution network. At this stage, I am delighted to report that Raspberry Pi products are still available in all of the usual places and we’re working very hard to make sure that this continues.

    Supporting colleagues

We have implemented a range of actions to support our colleagues wherever they work. This has included restricting non-essential international travel, encouraging and supporting flexible and home working, improving the cleaning and hygiene facilities at our offices, and putting in place extra support for colleagues who have increased caring responsibilities because of government or other institutions taking actions to control the spread of the virus, like school closures.

We are following local public health guidance on self-isolation and, for anyone who is unwell, we will provide sick pay as normal. We have committed that none of our employees will be out of pocket because of actions we take to prevent the spread of the virus.

We have encouraged colleagues to consider moving face to face meetings online, including job interviews. So if you’re due to meet anyone at the Foundation, they’ll check in with you about your preferences and agree the best approach with you.

    Look out for each other

One of the best things about Raspberry Pi is the amazing community that we have the privilege to work with everyday. That includes our teams, partners and funders, educators, volunteers, businesses, and millions of incredible young digital makers.

Whatever happens over the coming days, weeks, and months, it feels increasingly likely that everyone in this community will be affected in some way. Hopefully, for most people that will be nothing more than being inconvenienced.

Personally, I am finding the uncertainty one of the hardest things to deal with. I’ve really appreciated all of the messages of support and offers of help that I’ve received over the past few days. This has always been an organisation and a community where people genuinely care about and support each other. Let’s all double down on that now.
