  • Xbox Launches “Project Amplify” to Support Black Youth Interested in Gaming Industry Careers

Xbox Launches “Project Amplify” to Support Black Youth Interested in Gaming Industry Careers

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

A recent survey from HBCU Connect, commissioned by Microsoft, determined that out of 200 respondents, approximately 95% of college students and alumni from HBCUs across the country shared that they have interest in a career in the gaming industry, with 34% of respondents stating that they were specifically interested in Program Management roles, 24% interested in Engineering roles and 18% interested in Gaming Development roles. This week marks National Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Week in the United States, which occurs annually in September, an initiative led by the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), to recognize these institutions’ contributions to the U.S and to commemorate HBCUs’ impact on American Culture.

Gaming is a leading form of entertainment, but to date – only 2% of professionals in the video game industry are Black compared with 13% of the U.S. population. In partnership with members of the Black Communities at Xbox, Xbox is looking to uplevel that statistic and close this gap by promoting pipelines for Black people and youth across the gaming industry. Introducing: Project Amplify – a video series that aims to magnify Black voices within Xbox to inspire, educate and motivate youth across the U.S. to aspire towards careers in the gaming industry through real-life storytelling from Black leaders and employees across the Xbox ecosystem.

Project Amplify features fourteen Black employees from across Xbox as they each share advice, insights into their current roles, and highlights from their time within the gaming industry. This video series is meant to educate youth on the diversity of roles within the gaming industry, while highlighting some of the Black people who are working in those roles, daily. On behalf of the Black Communities at Xbox, co-leads shared their personal stories in the video series, of their journey into the gaming industry inclusive of:

    • “Growing up I didn’t have much of a vision for what my career would be. I decided to go to college because I thought it was a way to ‘get a good job’ and escape poverty, but even as a freshman Computer Science major, I still had a very shallow knowledge of the opportunities that the tech industry presented me. Throughout my college experience and with internships, I learned more about how big the world is – how many companies, careers, and pathways exist for you to find or create a job that you love. I want more people to know that they have options, nothing is impossible or out of reach for them and encourage those to start chasing their passions early.” – Q Muhaimin, Product Manager
    • “In my early years I was more focused on what not to do versus what I could be.  It wasn’t until my adult years that I learned to leverage my passion for games into a career. I am now incredibly thankful to be celebrating 10+ years in my dream career and I hope Project Amplify inspires people to dream and take action toward their own goals. At Xbox, we’re always looking to make gaming available to more people in more ways. Since launching Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) two years ago, we’ve continued to expand device support: bringing Halo Infinite to entry-level PCs, Forza Horizon 5 to iOS phones and tablets, Microsoft Flight Simulator to Xbox One, and hundreds of games to even more devices like 2022 Samsung Smart TVs.

As we look ahead, we will continue to meet people on the devices they already own, breaking down barriers of entry to play.

So today, we’re announcing that Xbox Cloud Gaming will be available in more places with the Logitech G CLOUD Gaming Handheld when it launches in North America on October 17. Soon you’ll be able to play Grounded and Sea of Thieves, or discover your next favorite game, right in the palm of your hands using the power of the cloud on an all-new device.

Party chat noise suppression, now on Xbox One consoles and Windows 11/10 PCs

Last month we announced party chat noise suppression on Xbox Series X|S consoles. This month, we’re rolling it out to Xbox One consoles and Windows 11/10 PCs. If you use party chat, you may notice fewer unwanted noises and interruptions than before. Noise suppression helps remove noises like gamepad clicks, breathing, and background noise from your parties.

If you want to keep some types of background noise like music in your parties, you can also turn noise suppression off. On Xbox consoles, just open the guide, scroll to Parties & chats, and select Options. There you can enable or disable noise suppression. And on Windows 11/10 PCs, go to Start a party, open Settings > Party audio, and enable or disable noise suppression from there.

  • Saturnalia, a Survival Horror Adventure, Comes to Xbox

Saturnalia, a Survival Horror Adventure, Comes to Xbox

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

In the world of Saturnalia, nothing is as it seems. The Italian village of Gravoi may appear quaint and unassuming at first glance, but it holds many secrets. Similarly, there’s more to the four co-protagonists of Saturnalia than meets the eye. Although each of them are outsiders for different reasons, they all share a common cause: rooting out the darkness that haunts Gravoi, even if it means bringing their own demons into the light.

The first of these is Anita Giannini, geologist extraordinaire and the very picture of the late 80’s businesswoman. Unlike her fellow protagonists, she had no attachment to Gravoi prior to her arrival a year before the game’s events. In fact, her initial purpose in the village was to conduct reconnaissance in the area on behalf of corporate mining interests eager to exploit the surrounding natural resources. A woman of her assurance and confidence isn’t easily deterred, in matters both professional and personal—so perhaps it was inevitable that she’d find herself involved in an illicit affair with none other than Damiano, the married town sacristan. At the outset of Saturnalia, she’s discovered that she’s with child, and despite the controversy sure to arise if her affair was made public, she’s determined to keep the baby.

The conservative values of Gravoi are at odds with Anita’s unflappable character, but there are other, darker forces at work that even she can’t dismiss.

    screenshot

In contrast, Paul Izem is a child of Gravoi, even if he didn’t know it for most of his life. After his birth parents died under mysterious circumstances while he was still an infant, Paul was soon adopted by a family in Iglesias, a city in southern Sardinia. Only after discovering a letter urging his adoptive parents to never let him return to Gravoi does he defy that very request and embark on a personal mission to find out the truth about what happened to his mother and father. To avoid raising the suspicions of a town already distrustful of outsiders, Paul uses his profession as a photojournalist to shield his true motive, claiming he’s working on a feature for a tourist magazine even as he quietly seeks out clues about his past. Little does he know that his camera will be of critical importance in documenting the horror lurking in Gravoi…

Quick to put on a brave face, Paul hides his insecurity just as he hides his real motivation in coming to the village. But the other protagonists of Saturnalia don’t exactly share his self-consciousness.

Sergio Aulas was born and raised in Gravoi, but left for Manchester when he was only sixteen. At the time, his departure seemed like something to be celebrated: a chance to study abroad paid for by the generosity of Bruno Bissani, the lord and owner of the castle in Gravoi. But in truth, this wasn’t an opportunity, but an exile: discovered in bed with Bisssani by the lord’s own wife, Sergio was sent to England as a means of covering up the scandal, at the urging of his father. Thirty years later, he’s become a successful computer programmer, returning to Gravoi only to care for his iron lung-bound father. Aloof and analytical, Sergio is inherently antagonized by the traditionalist norms of his hometown, particularly as a gay man no longer compelled to hide his sexuality. But motivated by his obligation to his sick father, as well as his lingering curiosity about the fate of his former lover—who’s since disappeared—Sergio has no choice but to reinsert himself back into the community and mystery of Gravoi.

But Sergio is also secretly battling a morphine addiction, which he treats by pilfering his father’s medicine. If he wants to find the answers he seeks, he’ll need the one thing he’s most discomfited by: the help of others.

Claudia Mirai would rather suffer in silence than ask for help. More than anyone else in Saturnalia, she despises Gravoi: as a sixteen-year-old punk, she knows she was made for more than just tending her father’s bar, and the antiquated culture of her remote hometown stifles her to the point of exasperation. But it’s not just youthful rebellion shaping her worldview. As a child, she stumbled onto a horrific scene: her aunt, clad in her wedding dress and hanging from the centenary olive tree in the ancient nuragic area right outside the village. The sight left Claudia with painful trauma she can never be freed from, as did the omerta (the Southern Italian code of silence) that followed, when her father and the other townsfolk refused to acknowledge the death as a suicide. Since then, she’s stood in stark opposition to every institution in her community, be it patriarchal values or religious instruction. She’s defiant and only aligns herself with those she views as in opposition to the system—but in truth, her cynicism is a coping mechanism for her painful memories and her bitter relationship with her father. Her wish is to leave Gravoi and begin a new life somewhere far away from everything she’s ever known.

In order for that wish to come true, however, she has to make it through the night of the winter solstice.

Alone, each of these characters can only do so much. Together, they stand a chance to uncover the mystery of Gravoi and escape Saturnalia.

The team here at Santa Ragione is putting the finishing touches to the game, and we can’t wait for you to play it. Saturnalia launches for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S on October 27th, 2022.

    Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

    Assassin-s-Creed-4-Black-Flag-assassins-creed-33818306-1440-1047

    Plot

In the present day, the unnamed player character is hired by Abstergo Entertainment to gather footage from the Animus to make an immersive film experience. Samples taken from Desmond Miles in the moments after his death have allowed Abstergo to continue to access his genetic memories. The player starts by delving into the memories of Edward Kenway, an eighteenth-century pirate.

Kenway’s story starts in England where he lives an unhappy life as a pesant. He dreams of a life as a privateer, which causes friction with his wife, Caroline. Caroline leaves him, predicting that Kenway’s ambitions will eventually drive his loved ones away. With nothing keeping him in England, Kenway sets off for the Caribbean.

His adventure as a privateer is short-lived and he quickly turns to piracy. His ship attacks a passing vessel, but his crew are killed, and he is shipwrecked a hundred leagues from Havana. The only other survivor is Duncan Walpole, a rogue Assassin who claims to be on an errand of vital importance and asks Kenway to escort him. When Kenway questions Walpole’s ability to pay, Walpole accuses him of piracy, and Kenway is forced to kill him. Kenway assumes Walpole’s identity and completes his errand to Havana. There he meets Laureano Torres, the Governor of Havana; Woodes Rogers, an emissary of the British Empire; and Julien de Casse, a French aristocrat and privateer. The three are high-ranking Templars seeking the Observatory, a Precursor construct that can be used for mass surveillance and mind control. To do this, they have located the Sage, the only person capable of locating the Observatory. Unaware of the dangers posed by this conspiracy, Kenway sees this as an opportunity for profit. He attempts to question the Sage, but is caught by Torres and sent to a prison convoy. Kenway escapes custody with the help of Adéwalé, a Barbadian plantation worker. They commandeer a frigate that Kenway christens the Jackdaw and escape to Nassau.

Once in Nassau, Kenway meets Ed Thatch, Benjamin Hornigold, Charles Vane, Jack Rackham and James Kidd; pirates who dream of turning Nassau into a free state. Kenway assists them, killing de Casse and stealing a large warship with which to defend Nassau. He is approached by Kidd, who directs him to a settlement on the Yucatan Peninsula that is inhabited by the Assassins. The Assassins are not welcoming, and have Kenway confirm the identity of the Sage before sending him away. However, Kenway’s recklessness has revealed the location of the settlement to the Templars, and the Assassins are overwhelmed in the ensuing attack.

Kenway decides to seek out the Sage himself. Learning that Torres has been redirecting supply colonies to a sea fort in eastern Cuba, Kenway leads an assault on the fortress, capturing it before the convoy arrives and taking Torres hostage. Torres admits that the Sage has been abducted and that he has laundered money from the Spanish Empire to pay the ransom. Kenway follows the trail to Kingston, where he infiltrates a manor owned a Laurens Prins, a notorious slave trader. He discovers that Kidd and the Assassins are also targeting Prins, and the two form a temporary alliance that ends in disaster when the Sage overpowers Kidd and takes him hostage, revealing that he is working with the Templars. Kidd and Kenway narrowly escape and regroup. Kidd reveals that he is actually Mary Read, and disguises himself as a man to pass unnoticed.

Meanwhile, the free state of Nassau is dangerously close to collapse, with disease and squalor running rampant, morale at an all-time low and no economy to speak of. The founders are deeply divided on every issue, with Benjamin Hornigold in favour of accepting a pardon and unconditional surrender from the British, Charles Vane insisting that Nassau is simply experiencing a downturn and that it can survive in the long term, Ed Thatch resorting to taking supplies from the British by force, and Jack Rackham spending most of his time drunk. Kenway attempts to solve the problems in a way that satisfies everyone, but the divide is too deep. Hornigold accepts the pardon and joins the Templars, then betrays Kenway and Thatch by leading them into an ambush that sees Thatch killed. Rackham seizes the opportunity to stage a mutiny, taking the Jackdaw and marooning Kenway and Vane on an isolated island. Kenway is forced to kill Vane when Vane is driven mad before he is rescued by a passing ship. He recovers the Jackdaw after Rackham proves to be an incompetent captain.

Kenway continues his pursuit of the Sage, following him to the island of Principe off the coast of Africa. Freeing him from the Templars, the Sage accepts Kenway’s help and introduces himself as Bartholomew Roberts. The two work together to locate the Observatory, on the north coast of Jamaica. Roberts reveals that it is a machine capable of showing the user the world through the eyes of a subject. He overpowers Kenway, admitting that he owes no alleigence to the Templars or to the Assassins, and instead aligns himself with whoever he thinks will help him achieve his ends. Kenway escapes, but is weakened an recaptured by Roberts, who hands him over to Torres and Rogers to collect the bounty on Kenway’s head.

Torres and Rogers offer Kenway his freedom in exchange for his help locating the Observatory. Kenway refuses, and the Templars use their position to sentence him to suffer without dying. Four months later, Kenway is rescued by Ah Tabei, the leader of the Assassins, to carry out a prison break and rescue Mary Read. Mary is found to be sick, and dies before they can escape. Edward’s obsession with the Observatory prompts Adéwalé to leave and join the Assassins. In an alcohol-induced stupor, he realises that Caroline’s prediction has come true and that his relentless pursuit of riches has driven everyone away.

Kenway returns to the Assassins, where his new-found self-awareness convinces Ah Tabei that he is ready to become an Assassin. Together, they plan to stop the Templar conspiracy before they can take control of the Observatory. Disguising himself as the Italian ambassador to Jamaica, he kills Woodes Rogers at a party in Kingston. He follows Roberts back to Principe and storms his ship, The Royal Fortune. Finally, he returns to Havana to kill Torres, only to discover that Torres already knows the location of the Observatory. Kenway races to stop Torres before he can activate the machine, overcoming the Observatory’s defence systems and finally kill him. The Assassins take control of the Observatory, whilst Kenway receives a letter informing him that Caroline has died, and that she was pregnant when she left him. The story ends with Kenway meeting his daughter Jennifer for the first time.

In the present day, the player’s research task is interrupted by his employers, who keep directing him to concentrate on locating the Observatory. The player is contacted by someone inside Abstergo Entertainment’s information technology department, who forces they player to run errands for him. The IT manager arranges for the player to access the Animus‘ cloud drive system, where Juno materialises before the player. She reveals that although it was necessary to open her temple to avert disaster, she was not and is not ready to join the world, and refuses to possess the player. The IT manager, revealed to be a reincarnated form of Bartholomew Roberts, attempts to murder the player to cover up the failed attempt to revive Juno, but is killed by Abstrego’s security forces. The company apologises to the player before they are remotely contacted by Shaun and Rebecca, who request the player uses their new-found security clearance to aid them by continuing to hack Abstergo Entertainment’s computers.
