Why Apple Could Leave Ports Behind, next MacBook with no USB?!

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

While rumors of a 12-inch MacBook Air have been merrily percolating these last few months, the most interesting aspect of Apple’s upcoming redesign turns out not to be the size after all. It’s the apparent abandonment of ports.

    du9cill4kdqywygoxtdi

As Cupertino Whisperer Mark Gurman showed today, the rumored redesign isn’t just a matter of size. Apple has also reportedly stripped the MacBook Air of most of its—already sparse—ports. Where there was once (on the 13-inch MBA) a home for a MagSafe connector, Thunderbolt, SDXC card slot, a headphone jack, and two USB 3.0 ports, the 12-inch MBA has a lone USB Type-C (a reversible version that can also be used for charging) port and an obligatory headphone jack. Instead of hardware connectivity, presumably, you’ll be expected to use a smorgasbord of cloud and wireless connectivity.

This seems dramatic, but should it actually come to pass it’s also perfectly fine and good and probably foreshadowed. Apple spent the last year introducing features specifically designed to let you circumvent wires altogether. Handoff, to let you move seamlessly between computer and phone. iCloud Drive, for cloud-based file storage. AirDrop, which has been around even longer, to let you share files among Apple devices with ease. It’s already entirely possible to go weeks without having to hook up your MBA to anything besides the wall, much less multiple things, much less to complete tasks that require Thunderbolt-level prowess.

Besides, the MacBook Air in particular isn’t designed for the daisy-chaining power users of the world. It’s an affordable everyone machine, and not everyone needs ports. So, sure, sounds good. Except! Except.

While on paper the transition to a nearly portless world seems perfectly fine, there’s nothing in Apple’s recent history that suggests it’s ready to put so much weight on its cloud and software offerings. Handoff is a great idea that barely worked for most people when it launched. iCloud had a ferociously rocky first few years; it’s gotten better recently but still isn’t nearly as seamless as advertised. And more generally, OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 were both rife with problems when they launched, some of which remain unresolved.

There’s A New, Problem With The iPhone 6 Selfie Camera!

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Hundreds of iPhone 6 customers are complaining that their phone’s front-facing „selfie“ camera is becoming misaligned.

The front-facing camera seems to be liable to moving within its housing, which results in a grey crescent shape appearing on the right side of the camera.

You can see the problem in the photo above. There’s a barely perceptible grey area showing through where the camera seems to have shifted slightly to the left.

People all over the internet are experiencing the same problem.

A Reddit thread titled „Is your iPhone 6 front-facing camera misaligned?“ has more than 150 comments. The replies are almost all variations on „Mine has the exact same issue“ and „Same.“ Currently, almost none of the users complaining about it say it actually impacts the photos being taken. In other words, if the thing still works there is no need to replace it — it’s just cosmetic.

Apple iOS 8 Gold Master now available to download!

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

iOS 8 GM (Build number: 12A365) is available for the following iOS devices:

    • iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S
    • iPad Air, Retina iPad mini, iPad 4, iPad mini, iPad 3, iPad 2
    • 5th generation iPod touch

As with all GM builds, you can’t do an OTA update from previous betas. You will need to download it from iOS Dev Center and install it on your device.

Here are the direct download links (please note you need to be a developer to access them)

    ios-8-2

    Update or Restore Your Device

Now that your device is registered as a developer device, and that you have the .ispw file on your computer and your device backed up, head back to iTunes. In the „Summary“ tab, option-click (or alt-click on Windows) on either „Check for Update“ or „Restore iPhone…“.

The update option will simply update your device, while the restore option will wipe it and install a fresh version of iOS. You can perform a „Restore Backup…“ later if you want to get your apps/data back.

If you select the „Restore iPhone…“ option, you will have to disable „Find My iPhone“ first on your device, if it’s enabled. Updating does not require this.

Find My iPhone must be disabled first if you select „Restore iPhone…“

Select the IPSW File for Your Device

After option-clicking, find the .ispw file you downloaded earlier (probably in your Downloads folder), select it, and click „Open“.

Then, click on „Update“ at the prompt“ and wait for iOS 8 beta to be installed on your device.

The phone will guide you through the rest of the install process.

Instant Messaging apps are absolutely everywhere, and despite a cluster of established, widely-used efforts, newer ones continue to crop up all of the time. WhatsApp Messenger, which works on essentially all of the major mobile platforms, has been around for a number of years and boasts a user base well into the hundreds of millions, but despite offering a decent array of features, it could still use some improvements. Not being able to send more than 10 photos at once on the iPhone app, for example, is of major annoyance to some, but luckily, a new tweak by the name of WhatsApp Unlimited Media allows jailbreakers to bypass this limitation.

  • Jailbreak for iOS 7 is out

Jailbreak for iOS 7 is out

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Happy Holidays from the ‚evad3rs‘ team.

    ios-7-jailbreak-evasion

They’ve released an untethered iOS 7.x Jailbreak, compatible with all iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and iPad mini models running iOS 7.0 through 7.0.4.

You’ve mostly been out of luck if you’ve wanted to jailbreak iOS 7 so far; what options have existed have been incomplete at best. Cracking the code just got a lot easier, though, as evasi0n 7 has just arrived. The untethered jailbreak lets Mac and Windows users freely modify iOS 7 on any device that can run the software in the first place, including newer gadgets like the iPad Air and iPhone 5s. Just be prepared for a rough experience, at least with early versions. In addition to the usual risks associated with unofficial OS tweaks, Saurik (Jay Freeman) warns that he hasn’t had a real chance to test Cydia’s app distribution platform with the new evasi0n release; you’re using it at your own risk.

This jailbreak includes something new for Chinese markets. Instead of Cydia, these users will have access to the all Chinese „TaiG“ store. However, people found out that this store has some pirated apps. Here’s the official word from the evasi0n team:

    Dear Jailbreak Community,

We are deeply troubled by the rumors and speculation surrounding our iOS 7 jailbreak. We would like to present the whole story to you.

Most of the concern surrounds the inclusion of the Chinese App Store Taig. In the course of developing the iOS 7 jailbreak, we were approached by the company with an offer of partnership in offering Taig bundled with the jailbreak in China. Taig is a Chinese App Store written in Chinese. tailored and, we believe, well suited to meet the needs of users for the Chinese market. Users are not locked into Taig. Cydia can also be installed and Taig removed afterwards. It would be deeply hypocritical to remove choice from the user in the course of jailbreaking.

Taig has never asked us to disclose our exploits to them, let alone sell them. We were simply asked to bundle their third-party app store in China in a similar way we bundle and distribute Cydia around the world as an additional App Store, and in a similar way to how previous jailbreaks like blackra1n have bundled non-Cydia stores.

Of course, the safety and security of our users is a paramount concern, and due to the amount of close scrutiny by security professionals around the world, we offer one of the lower risk programs available for download on the Internet. We are saddened by the accusations that we would ever do such a thing, or sell weaponized exploits. If anyone ever attempted to include malware in a jailbreak, we are confident that the many security experts combing through jailbreak software would find it. The binaries are obfuscated for a similar reason to why we have in the past compiled in Cydia rather than including it as a separate file. We wish to secure the integrity of the jailbreak and discourage its use by third parties who may in fact wish to weaponize it. The obfuscation is of course not intended to deflect serious analysis by security professionals (who have quickly already fully analyzed and discussed the contents of the jailbreak), it is simply intended to prevent easy repackaging by other parties.

Preventing piracy is also extremely important to us. We are deeply sorry and embarrassed about the piracy that was seen today. All of us have spoken out vehemently against piracy in the past. We don’t believe it’s right for developers to not get paid for their work. In our agreement with Taig, we contractually bind them to not have piracy in their store. This was an extremely important precondition of working with them. In entering the agreement with them, we had hoped and continue to hope that our cooperation with Taig will improve the piracy situation in China. Many App Stores within China, including those run by large corporations, have many issues with pirated software. Promoting an app store that is required not to have piracy with our jailbreak, we believe, will help developers.

We are very upset that despite our agreement and review by their team, piracy was found in the store. It was not acceptable and they have been strenuously working to resolve the problem in good faith, and have removed all instances of it that we have brought to their attention. We are happy that it was not overlooked by the community. We’ve been so heads down working on the code that we didn’t see this. We are sorry. We will continue to monitor this issue and work to resolve it completely. Taig will be pulled from the jailbreak if it cannot be resolved.

Many of you have also wondered why this jailbreak was released without Cydia and MobileSubstrate being updated for iOS 7. After we received the offer from Taig, we informed Saurik, our friend, of our decision to accept the offer. SaurikIT had been in talks with Chinese companies regarding potential partnerships, made a counteroffer. We believe they share our views on how a relationship with companies in China currently utilizing jailbreaking might benefit everyone in the community. Unfortunately, the negotiations did not work out. A few days later, we received information that SaurikIT was working with another group to release a jailbreak ahead of us. We decided to release, knowing that Cydia, MobileSubstrate, and jailbreak tweaks would be updated after a few days, just as it always has in the course of jailbreaking.

Yes, we have benefitted financially from our work, just as many others in the jailbreak community have, including tweak developers, repo owners, etc. Any jailbreak from us will always be free to the users but we believe we have a right to be compensated in an ethical way, just as any other developer. However, the interests of the community will always be the most important thing to us. When releasing the jailbreak, we pledged all our donations to foundations supporting the interests of the community. We are deeply upset at how we have inadvertently distressed the community and we are focused on fixing it.

We love the jailbreak community and you motivate us to do this work. Having a choice and freeing your device is important.

We hope you understand and we thank you for all of your support.

iOS Core Ported To Nokia N900, Opens Door To iOS Running On Non-Apple Hardware

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Well known developer Winocm has managed to achieve “one of the core milestones” pertaining to a project he has been working on for quite some time. Those who follow the activity of the developer on his Twitter feed will more than likely know about the project he has been working on for quite some time. With a little help from Steven Troughton-Smith, Winocm has managed to port the core elements of Apple’s iOS operating system onto non-Apple hardware.

The benefits of this port aren’t immediately known to the majority of iOS users, but it does represent a significant technical achievement. The “proof” of port images have been provided courtesy of Troughton-Smith and show the core port of iOS successfully booting and running on a Nokia N900 smartphone from 2009. That particular hardware was originally shipped by the Finnish company running the Maemo 5 operating system. In addition to the N900 success, the developer has also stated that his port will successfully boot on various other hardware pieces.

    BZpcW6gCIAApfjj

It is extremely exciting news to know that this port is possible and effectively opens the door for others to look at the open-source implementation and build on it where necessary. In its current form however, it does appear to be for the purists and those who are extremely technically biased. There is currently no GUI support for this implementation – nor is there any planned in the immediate future – with the focus being on getting the XNU Kernel to boot on hardware other than the official Apple supplied kit.

    xnu-n900

As previously mentioned, the port will also play nicely with hardware other than the Nokia N900. For those interested, Winocm has detailed a number of hardware setups that are capable of booting his work, including the Texas Instruments AM335x (BeagleBone/BeagleBone Black) (OMAP335X) and ARM RealView Platform Baseboard for Cortex-A8 (ARMPBA8). The XNU Kernel is essentially the “core” of iOS (and OS X for that matter) and was built by Apple over a decade ago to form the foundations of their two operating systems.

At the time of writing, there wasn’t any great details on the future of this particular project. All of the work has been open-sourced and added to a repository on GitHub, meaning that developers all over the world can contribute their own offerings to the project going forward.

  • New iPhone 6 “Air” Concept Image Copies Moto G Customizable Colours Feature

New iPhone 6 “Air” Concept Image Copies Moto G Customizable Colours Feature

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

A new iPhone 6 „Air“ concept emerged online and included Moto G’s new customizable feature.

The new concept image is created by brightknight08. The iPhone 6 „Air“ features an all-new design with aiPad Air-like body and has customizable colours. There are new buttons as well, including a backlit proximity sensor in place of the home button and a silent button featured at the top that also functions as the iPhone’s power button. Moreover, brightknight08 packs a 4.6 inch Full HD screen display with 450 ppi in the iPhone 6 „Air“.

The newly released Moto G also boasts customizable feature that allows users to change the colours of the handset. Moto G turned the heads of many consumers as the smartphone costs $179 for its 8GB variant.

According to the latest rumours, the upcoming iPhone 6 features may include a solar wireless charging feature. One of the most common complaints on iPhones is fast depleting battery capacity. This feature aims to provide solution to the said problem.

This feature is supported by a patent filed by Apple back in February. Apple secured a patent for the use of solar panels in portable devices. This integrated touch sensor and solar assembly would involve integrating social cells into a touch screen by using electrodes that can pull double duty as a solar cell and a touch sensor.

Another rumoured feature that is making the rounds is the use of an extremely strong Sapphire glass for the smartphone’s screen display. Apple already used the technology on the cover of iPhone 5S and Touch ID home button. Sapphire glass is roughly 2.5 times stronger than the glass currently used in smartphones, many of which use Gorilla Glass from Corning.

Rumours claimed iPhone 6 will come with larger screen display with a range of 4.8 to 6 inches. Many analysts predicted that Apple will finally pack a bigger screen on the iPhone 6. Also, the next Apple flagship smartphone may keep the iPhone 5S‘ 64-bit A7 processor, M7 graphics chip and the fingerprint sensor. The next generation of iPhone may also include features Near Field Communication and larger internal storage that were skipped in the current handset.

iPhone 6 release date is still unconfirmed. There were speculations that the unveiling will happen early next year. However, reports claimed that Apple is adding more suppliers to increase the availability of iPhone 5S due to its strong demand.

Coin Is One Credit Card to Rule Them All

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

There are lots of companies, including Google and Apple, that would like to replace your wallet with a digital version, but a startup has a somewhat less ambitious goal — replace your handful of credit cards with one super card.

Coin, a credit-card-like device, is set for a summer 2014 launch. As the video below explains, Coin swipes like an ordinary card. The difference is, the card holds up to eight credit cards, debit cards or gift cards. Coin provides a dongle device to users that connects to their phone and anapp that lets you download the card info.

    Coin

The device will cost $100, but the company is charging $50 for early adopters that preorder now. Founded by former PayPal developer Kanishk Parashar, Coin uses a patent-pending magnetic strip. The reader device employs Bluetooth Low Energy and Coin’s battery lasts two years, according to the company.

With so much energy spent towards turning smartphones into digital wallets, Coin’s idea seems a bit like a throwback, or at least a stopgap solution until those initiatives go mainstream. (Coin’s debut coincided with the U.S. launch of Isis, a mobile wallet initiative backed by AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.) Assuming the traditional wallet sticks around for a while, though, Coin might carve its own niche, especially if it can somehow incorporate drivers‘ licenses, tickets and library cards, among other stubbornly analog forms of ID.

  • Apple’s iWatch To Ship In Two Different Sizes For Men And Women

Apple’s iWatch To Ship In Two Different Sizes For Men And Women

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

It has been reckoned for a while now that Apple is in the process of developing a so-called “iWatch” product to be worn on the wrist. The rumor itself is certainly believable, particularly with the release of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear back in September, but the reports surrounding the product itself have ranged from the plausible to the far-fetched. Today arrives perhaps the most outrageous claim that Apple will be creating two different specifications of the iWatch – a smaller model for women, and a larger version for the predominantly larger wrists of the male population.

    20131113000871_0

Of course, as watch aficionados will be more than aware, real timepieces made for women do tend to be smaller, but for a smartwatch to follow suit would seem a bit of a step too far. But that’s the assessment of one industry analyst, who believes the iWatch will feature an OLED display in both 1.7-inch and 1.3-inch specifications – the latter tailored to women.

We do expect, what with Apple being Apple, that the iWatch will make something of a fashion statement, but for the company to go the whole hog and release the iWatch in differing sizes would make very little sense. It would also cause quite a bit of controversy. I mean, what would a smaller-wristed man or larger-wristed lady do when out shopping for the iWatch? Would the smaller-displaying model be inferior in any other way? How would Apple market such a product.

    iWatch-2

With the iPad mini having released last year, it would seem that the Tim Cook era of Apple is much more open to reason, but an OLED watch in two different sizes, for the two sexes? Personally, I cannot see this happening.

The analyst with the scoop on this one is David Hsieh, who’s the head of the the greater China market for DisplaySearch. Hsieh has a solid track record for making accurate predictions where the Cupertino outfit is concerned, and if he’s right on this one, it will also be the first time Apple has introduced OLED technology into its displays.

Many of its competitors in the smartphone and tablet industry use OLED displays, while the company has stuck religiously with LCD panels.

Ming-Chi Kuo, another well-connected analyst for CGI, believes the iWatch will launch in the second half of next year.
