Shapeways Raises $30 Million to Boost 3D Printing Creator Services And Tools

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The 3D printing creator community on Shapeways will benefit from tools to boost product creation, marketing, and brand development.

Shapeways, the platform for product creation using 3D printing technologies, has just raised $30 million in a Series E funding round. The round was led by Lux Capital with participation from previous investors Union Square Ventures, INKEF Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz.

The company will use the capital to boost its growth and launch other services that can accelerate its overall vision. In a telephone call with Shapeways CEO Greg Kress, he stated: “We want creators to become millionaires.” Shapeways plans to become an end-to-end platform for creators to design, make and sell their products: “Our mission is to bring ideas to life.”

The company currently has a community of more than one million creators and 10 million products available for 3D printing. By joining the platform, creators receive design tools and services as well as access to more advanced production technologies. Indeed, Shapeways now offers printing facilities across New York, the Netherlands and global partners.

As part of the expansion, it is launching Design With Shapeways, a programme that provides one-on-one support for creators throughout the 3D modeling process. Creators can seek out support for all the technical 3D modeling pain points, even if they have no experience in it.

“Millions of people have brought their product ideas to life with Shapeways thanks to the company’s unparalleled 3D printing expertise, scale, and capability,” explained Zack Schildhorn, partner at Lux Capital. “The plan is to put this product creation engine in the hands of millions more, though more approachable and expansive services. Life-changing businesses will be built on this platform.”

Customizable collections and end-to-end service coming soon

In addition, the company is planning to launch Spring & Wonder, a customized jewelry collection which users can modify and personalize. Specifically, the look, materials, and designs are all customizable.

This is a showcase on what can be done with the right tools: The collection is essentially a demonstration of the company’s 3D modeling and printing capabilities.

Throughout the year, the company expects to launch many more showcase brands.

Furthermore, the Shapeways team is looking to roll out an end-to-end service that lets creators scale into a small business. By taking advantage of the platform’s experience, users can develop their brand, website, marketing support, merchandise and customer service.

Right now, a few select clients are beta testing the management system for their outdoor recreational products.

The company will announce the full project details over the coming months.

“We’ve just hit our 10 millionth product printed but we are just getting started, there is so much more to do,” added Greg Kress, CEO of Shapeways. “We want to enable more creators to reach success and this will include supporting them through design services, manufacturing beyond just 3D printing and helping them create small businesses.”

  • Mything is a Marketplace for 3D Printing Launching in Austria

Mything is a Marketplace for 3D Printing Launching in Austria

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

This week, an Austrian start-up called Mything is being launched. The website is a 3D printing marketplace and aims to be the Amazon for this technology.

Someday, most things we own may be produced locally by 3D printers. Bringing this dream closer to reality is Austrian startup, Mything. The company is launching this week and provides a 3D printing marketplace.

Impressively, before launching, Mything managed to secure €2 million in investment. Florian Mott is CEO, co-founder, and former bwin marketing boss. Co-founders and investors include Gerhard Pail and Frank Kappe (KaPa Ventures).

Their hope is that Mything can become successful in Austria as a central platform for everything relating to 3D printing with local production. If this is the case, expansion into Germany is also possible this year.

CEO Florian Mott explains exactly what mything is and how it works: “In the near future, we will be the international marketplace for local 3D printing. It will be a central platform where product designers, local manufacturers, and customers can meet easily. mything’s revenue comes from commissions. Besides this triangular marketplace, local manufacture in 3D printing shops is at the heart of the platform. Several exist already and their number is rising fast. In the future, they’ll be as common as copy shops, sub-post offices, and other local suppliers.”

    Mything is Three-Sided Marketplace

To use the site, simply browse the available products, personalize your chosen item and choose your manufacturer. After the print is complete, you can collect the item or have it delivered. Ready for this week’s launch, the company recruited 50 designers and 20 local 3D printing shops.

Mott adds that the company’s disruptive factor may not be obvious at first. But, Mything hopes to link digital product designs with local 3D printing shops. Mott adds:

“The classic production and distribution process from a product designer’s draft to receipt of a product by a customer requires transport and warehousing and so involves very many steps lasting weeks or months. We reduce this process to only a few steps and days; in future, in fact, it will be only a matter of hours.”

Of course, this leads to lower costs for on-demand production, short delivery times and less pollution due to no need for long transport routes or warehouses. Mott is convinced that, because of these reasons, it’s only a matter of time before 3D printing overtakes the mass market.

Currently, Mything is offering 800 products in the home, office and jewelry categories. Designs are available in 40 different materials and colors. You can also choose either 3D printing or laser cutting. But, more products will be added over time.

Visit the new website to find out more about future products and expansion into other countries.

  • i.Materialise Adds New Untreated Brass to Finishing Options

i.Materialise Adds New Untreated Brass to Finishing Options

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

i.materialise is adding untreated brass to its range of finishing options – print your designs in basic brass without polish, coating or plating to give them a vintage look.

If you’re 3D printing jewelry or miniatures and want to create a vintage appearance, you’ll be interested to hear about i.materialise’s most recent addition to their range of finishing options – untreated brass.

With this new finishing option, you can print your creations in basic brass. This means you can choose no polishing, coating or plating. However, this can lead to more patina and even damage than if you choose to add a different finish.

The material, which is an alloy of copper and zinc, has a very old school appearance which will oxidize over time. i.Materialise also point out that this option is more affordable than other options when it comes to 3D printing in brass. This is due to the lack of plating or coating.

New Material and Reduced Lead Times from i.Materialise

If you choose untreated brass, it’s worth remembering that it will not receive a PU coating. This means it is not protected against oxidation or scratches. You will also be able to see the printing lines.

i.Materialise add that brass is very versatile and they offer it in a variety of other colors and plating. Reasons for choosing brass may be to form-fit before ordering in gold or silver due to the significant price difference.

However, it is also regularly used to print detailed miniatures, sculptures, and jewelry. But, if you’re now worried about scratches, there are over 20 different material options available to peruse instead.

Another important change happening at i.Materialise is their reduction of lead times for aluminum – they’re now shipping in 12 business days. They’ve also reduced titanium lead times which are now down to 11 business days.

Keep in mind that although untreated brass is an affordable option, the price is affected by the volume of your print. Visit the company’s website to find out more about the options available to you.

  • Amazon Secures Patent for Custom 3D Printing Service

Amazon Secures Patent for Custom 3D Printing Service

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The E-commerce retailer has finally secured a patent for an idea it started back in 2014. Amazon wants to 3D print products as a service, shipping or holding them for local  pickup.

Amazon now officially holds a patent to launch a custom 3D printing service. That means consumers will be able to order custom-designed items through the e-commerce website and get them shipped right to their door or pick-up point.

The idea has been in development for quite some time now. Indeed, Amazon launched a store for 3D printed items in 2014. Back then, customers were able to order goods such as jewelry, toys or home décor. The creations were then manufactured by 3D printing partners Mixee, Sculpteo and 3DLT.

Customers were able to pick their own designs, color and finishes as well as materials. Before placing an order, they were able to view the design as a 360-degree preview.

For the retailer, the move is next in line to conquer the specialized inventory market.

According to the patent specifications, users would place a custom order with a 3D printing service provider. The item description may also include 3D manufacturing instruction. Alternatively, it appears that service providers can seek approval from customers for the manufacturing instructions. Upon verification, the custom-designed order is then 3D manufactured and shipped for door delivery or pick-up.

Similarly, suppliers can put in an order for 3D items.

Amazon’s 3D Printing  Service for Speedier Parts Replacement

The advantage of such a system for Amazon is that the company could significantly reduce its warehouse space. If orders are custom-made and immediately shipped, they won’t be taking up any space in a warehouse.

Custom 3D printed objects are not just for the extrovert seeking a uniquely stylish home or a somewhat different gift idea. Instead, anyone could benefit from fast-turnaround 3D printed parts.

Imagine doing a clothes wash and breaking a functional part of the washing machine. Using your smartphone or laptop, Amazon would allow you to order a replacement part that could be custom 3D printed according to the original manufacturer instructions.

The only hurdle for Amazon here would entail establishing a wide network of collaborations with white goods manufacturers.

In addition, the retail group recently obtained a patent for its virtual reality mirror. This lets consumers see their reflection within a virtual reality setting or superimposing clothes. By incorporating sensors, cameras and sophisticated software, the magic mirror is able to show a realistic image at various angles. Bring on the future of trying on clothes without actually having to change!
