    Reading Time: 6 minutes

Fallen Tear: The Ascension by Winter Crew (Philippinen)

    InKonbini by Nagai Industries (Japan)

    Brocula by Destroyer Doggo (Indien)

Go-Go Town by Prideful Sloth (Australien)

    Nightscape by Mezan Studios (Katar)

Jump Ship by Keepsake Games (Schweden)

Botany Manor by Balloon Studios (UK)

  • How ID@Xbox is Enabling 8 Global Game Developers to Realize Their Vision

How ID@Xbox is Enabling 8 Global Game Developers to Realize Their Vision

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

One core mission here at Xbox is ensuring that games can be experienced by players all around the world, and supporting developers on their journey to create incredible experiences is a key part of this goal. This year, ID@Xbox is helping independent studios bring some amazing new titles to Xbox, PC and Game Pass. To celebrate here’s a look at eight exciting upcoming games from the EMEA and APAC regions, and how Xbox is supporting bringing them to life.

Fallen Tear: The Ascension by Winter Crew (Philippines)

Get stuck into a fresh take on Metroidvania in Fallen Tear: The Ascension, a 2D JRPG set in a magical, unique world. As Hira, you’ll uncover secrets from your past, battle dangerous beasts, and even defy a god or two along the way! More details on the title are expected soon.

“As a team debuting our first game, we needed more experience to promote and spread the word about it effectively. ID@Xbox helped us realize that reaching a wider audience is now possible,” says Stephen Manalastas, Founder of CMD Studio. “Our game was created as a love letter to the gaming community, offering a fresh and enjoyable take on the Metroidvania genre. We’re truly grateful for ID@Xbox’s support, as it allows us indie developers to share our passion with the world.”

    InKonbini by Nagai Industries (Japan)

Nagai Industries is crafting a wonderful slice-of-life narrative title that places you in the shoes of a small-town convenience worker in 1990s Japan. Stock goods, manage deliveries, and enjoy the tranquil, heart-warming stories you’ll uncover each day. InKonbini is set to release in early 2025.

“When you’re an independent developer, your marketing resources are extremely limited, and finding a platform that enables efficient communication with the world of gaming media can be crucial,” says Dima Shen, Founder of Nagai Industries. “We at Nagai Industries have been extremely fortunate to join the selected group of developers allowed to present their projects at ID@Xbox and to have a chance of reaching a wider audience than we have ever aspired to. Not only that, but the way this initiative is designed and handled makes you feel at home right away, and this friendly attitude of everyone involved is what makes it a unique, memorable and an overall positive experience.”

    Brocula by Destroyer Doggo (India)

In Brocula, you’ll take on the role of a vampire awoken from a 500 year snooze with a mild problem – the world has changed entirely. You’ll navigate the daunting maze of capitalism to earn your way, and reap the fund to restore your ancestral caste, which is now owned by the town’s major. You can also start a cult! More details on Brocula are coming soon.

“As a solo dev it is hard to manage different parts of the game dev cycle. The number of resources shared via ID@Xbox online sessions and webinars is just amazing,” says Prateek Jadhwani, Founder of Destroyer Doggo. “It gives you a new perspective on how much people are working (from the ID@Xbox team) in the background to make your game a success, whether it be in terms of helping you with marketing, development related queries or even helping new developers like me talk to studios who have launched successful titles. I am glad to be a partner at ID@Xbox. Thank you ID@Xbox team for all the help and support!”

Go-Go Town by Prideful Sloth (Australia)

Go-Go Town is a quirky, co-op city builder where you’ll take on the role as mayor of a rundown town. Team up with friends to build new shops and businesses, hire staff, but be prepared to take on a number of unpredictable catastrophes along the way.

“We’re grateful for the opportunities and support ID@Xbox provides to developers around the world,” says Joel Styles, Co-Founder and Director of Prideful Sloth.  “Their recent digital showcase and GDC showcase events both allowed us to demonstrate Go-Go Town! to the press and public, letting us share our game alongside other amazing indie titles from around the world. These experiences not only help in getting our game noticed but also allow us to connect more deeply with the Xbox community and media. Big thanks to ID@Xbox for their support and love of indies!”

Still Wakes The Deep by The Chinese Room (UK)

Horror meets the harsh tides of Scotland in Still Wakes the Deep, a first-person narrative adventure that sees you navigating a collapsing oil rig. Here, you’ll battle with reality and unforeseen carnage as you attempt to save your crew from the depths of the freezing, dark North Sea. The title is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PC and Game Pass on June 18.

“As creators, we want as many people as possible to play and complete our game,” says Rob McLachlan, Lead Designer at The Chinese Room. “ID@Xbox has already given us the platform and support to bring Still Wakes the Deep to new audiences, which has meant we could take our time and focus on delivering the exact game we set out to make without compromises.”

    Nightscape by Mezan Studios (Qatar)

What happens when the sky loses its light? This is a query that Nightscape protagonist Layla asks, as she embarks on an enchanting journey to restore the stars. Layla will encounter puzzles and mysterious creatures as she explores a damaged, but atmospheric setting as she explores an ancient Arabian world.

“Our vision is to establish ourselves as a leading force in the game development landscape of the MENA region,” says Hamad K, Creative Director at Mezan Studios. “This ambition wouldn’t have been attainable without the invaluable trust and support extended by the remarkable team at ID@Xbox.

“Their genuine understanding of our objectives and empathetic engagement has been pivotal. Working with the Global Expansion Team not only facilitated our selection at Tribeca but also unlocked funding, mentorship opportunities, enhanced our credibility, and significantly boosted visibility for our debut project, Nightscape, which is currently under development. We are immensely excited and thankful to be on this transformative journey. Special shoutout to Chloé Giusti and Temi Afolabi who have been instrumental in getting us this far!”

Jump Ship by Keepsake Games (Sweden)

Take to the cosmos in Jump Ship, a mission-based PvE FPS where you’re in charge of your own spaceship. Spend time on the ship and get stuck into space battles or find a planet to land on and explore for those much-needed upgrades.

ID@Xbox gave us the opportunity to fully reveal our debut game,” says Filip Coulianos, Game Director at Keepsake Games. “We’re grateful that Xbox allowed us to showcase Jump Ship alongside other great indie titles, and cannot wait to reveal more as we approach the release.”

Botany Manor by Balloon Studios (UK)

Botany Manor is a serene puzzle game that already bloomed into Xbox Series X|S earlier this week. Spend your days on the estate of retired botanist Arabella Greene and her vast collection of rare and interesting plants. To restore the grounds to their former glory, you’ll need to uncover notes and items scattered around the grounds for tips and clues that’ll help you bring these long-forgotten plants to life again. A perfect game for green thumbs.

“For me personally, ID@Xbox gave me a huge confidence boost as creative director on Botany Manor,” says Laure De Mey, Founder of Balloon Studios. “Being part of Game Pass, being included in showcases and having Xbox’s continuous support felt incredibly validating, and allowed me to really believe in the core vision of the game.”

  • 4 new IoT monitoring dashboard updates on Arduino Cloud

4 new IoT monitoring dashboard updates on Arduino Cloud

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Arduino Cloud recently received a major upgrade renewing the user interface and the Arduino Cloud editor. And as we promised it was just the beginning. This article dives into some of the new IoT monitoring dashboard features that may seem small, but pack a big punch for your connected projects.

    1. Duplicate IoT Dashboards

Dashboards are the heart of the Arduino Cloud, allowing you to effortlessly monitor and control your devices. That’s why improving their functionality is crucial.

Even though creating an IoT dashboard is an easy task with the intuitive drag-and-drop interface, it can become a bit tedious when you have to replicate many of them and apply minor adjustments.

Now it is possible to duplicate your IoT dashboards with just one click. Just click on the three dots (?) of the dashboard that you want to clone and select “Duplicate.” This creates a copy that you can customize to meet your specific needs.

    2. Customize your IoT Value Widget

Customizing widgets has been a common request from our user community, and we’ve recently addressed this with the introduction of decimal settings in the “Value” widget. This much-awaited feature allows users to configure the number of decimal digits displayed in the widget when dealing with floating-point variable types.

When selecting a floating-point variable type, users can specify the decimal precision shown in the widget and choose whether to truncate or round the value. Importantly, this setting only affects the visualization, not the actual variable value.

    3. Enjoy the new data aggregation method in Advanced Chart widget

Advanced chart widgets are one of the most popular widgets for data analysis as they help you improve your data analysis. The widget now includes support for configuring the data aggregation method.

    But what does it mean?

The chart widgets come with a smart implicit feature known as data aggregation. To prevent the chart from becoming too messy with an excess of data points, there is a fixed limit of data points per chart:

    • If the number of data points to show is lower than the maximum number of data points, there is no aggregation.
    • If the number of data points to show is bigger than the maximum number of data points, data is aggregated.

Before this update, there was only an implicit aggregation method, which was the average.

With this new Advanced Chart widget feature, you can now choose the aggregation method that suits your needs. Options include average, max value, and min value:

    • Average: Calculates the average of the data for each aggregation period.
    • Max value: Uses the maximum value within the aggregation period.
    • Min value: Uses the minimum value within the aggregation period.

This enhancement is a direct result of the feedback from our community. It’s a feature that has long been requested by users, and we’re happy to finally deliver it.

Check out this article if you want to learn more about Advanced Chart widgets.

    4. Deploy ready-to-use dashboards and firmware for your ESP32 devices

Templates are one of the most popular features of the Arduino Cloud. You can select a ready-to-use solution and deploy it with one click. You get the software and an IoT monitoring dashboard. If you need to do modifications for your IoT project, you can just edit the code and dashboard and off you go! It’s a fun and easy way to get started.

The exciting thing is that two new dashboard templates for ESP32 boards are now available, complementing the offering for Arduino boards:

With the SparkFun Weather Station kit template, you can program the SparkFun Weather Station kit firmware and get a ready-to-use dashboard that shows information about wind, rain, and sunlight.

Check out the full list of templates to see the ones that fit you more.

    Bonus: IoT widget preview

As a bonus, we’re also introducing a handy new feature – now when you add a widget to a dashboard, you’ll see a preview and description of the widget. This makes it even easier to choose the right widget for your dashboard and streamline your project setup process.

Passive Cooling Open CNC case review

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

On the smooth opposite side of the two parts are thermal pads; for the top piece, there are three that stick to the SoC, power management IC, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module. The base section is almost totally covered by a single thermal pad that sticks to the underside of Raspberry Pi 5.

The case comprises two aluminium heatsink parts that sandwich Raspberry Pi 5 between thermal pads

    Unlimited access

The two case parts are secured in place with long bolts. With no side pieces, access to Raspberry Pi 5’s ports is unobstructed. Cutouts in the top part give access to the GPIO pins and PoE header. There are also slots for the two camera/display MIPI ports and the UART and RTC battery connectors, while the fan connector remains uncovered.

So, how much cooling does this case provide? A lot! When idle, Raspberry Pi 5 was 10–15°C cooler than without a case; running a stress test, the difference was around 40°C.

    Verdict

    9/10

Provides an impressive amount of cooling while giving full access to all Raspberry Pi 5’s ports.

Cooling: Two large heatsink panels (top and base) with thermal pads attached

Features: Cutouts/slots for all Raspberry Pi 5 top-side ports; open sides for the others

  • Everything You Need to Know About Rush Mode in Gigantic: Rampage Edition, Available Today

Everything You Need to Know About Rush Mode in Gigantic: Rampage Edition, Available Today

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

    Summary

    • Gigantic: Rampage Edition is the definitive release of the original 5v5 MOBA Hero Shooter, Gigantic — available now on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One with crossplay support.
    • Rush Mode is a brand-new game mode that’s action-packed and fast-paced… get ready for non-stop action!
    • Find out what it takes to be an elite Rush Mode player thanks to the tips below.

The unique MOBA hero shooter, Gigantic, is making an epic comeback in a new definitive release, Gigantic: Rampage Edition – launching on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One on April 9, 2024! Gigantic: Rampage Edition will bring everything from the original game and introduce a ton of new content, including a new game mode “Rush”, cross platform play, new heroes, new maps, and gameplay improvements that will give you an even bigger and more complete Gigantic experience than ever before.

To help you get ready for the new mode, Rush, we’re giving you a speed run-like overview of everything you should know about the mode before you jump into it! You ready? We’re ready, let’s do this!

Rush Mode is a quick, fun and exciting mode for all players

If you’ve played the original Gigantic, you know how Gigantic can be… well… gigantic! With Rush Mode, we wanted to streamline the experience and did just that by condensing all the things that make Gigantic great to create a more accessible, fast-paced, and action-packed mode that all players can enjoy.  When we say “fast-paced” we mean it, as Rush matches take just about 10 minutes to finish.

Before You Jump In: Play the Rush Tutorial, Find a Hero That’s Right for You, and Customize Your Experience

Gigantic: Rampage Edition comes with a ton of gameplay improvements compared to the original, including new tutorials to teach you the ins and outs of the game’s different modes, including Rush. We highly recommend playing at least the Rush tutorial in Rampage Edition, which will give you an excellent overview of what you need to know about the mode.

Once you wrap up the tutorial, you should then find a hero that’s right for you. In Gigantic: Rampage Edition there are 25 unique heroes to choose from, including two new heroes, Roland and Kajir, that weren’t in the original game. Each hero fits under a specific archetype and has their own distinct set of offensive and defensive capabilities, including their own “ultimate” abilities (called “Focus Skills” in-game.) Choosing a hero that fits your play style, whether you like to get up close and personal to take down enemies or take them down from a distance, is vital to increasing your chances of being victorious in matches.

After you’ve found a perfect hero for you, it’s then time to build and customize your loadout to match your playstyle! You can go with one of two predetermined builds, or you’d like to take a deeper dive into loadout creation, feel free to build your own when you’re ready. Having a loadout that works for you is important, but we can’t forget to mention that the most important part of choosing a hero… customizing it! As you make progress, you’ll be able to unlock and choose from a variety of hero and weapon skins and other customization options – and the best part is that you don’t need to spend a single penny to get anything, all of the content can be unlocked just by playing the game!

What’s neat about Rush compared to the existing mode Clash, aside from of course matches being lightning fast, is that you can change your hero mid-match, allowing you and your team to change strategies during matches. So, for instance, if you’re noticing the enemy team is just not giving you and your team any breathing room as they all are using melee DPS heroes against you, you can fight back by changing to a melee DPS hero yourself to go toe-to-toe with them. Knowing how and when to change heroes is important in Rush, but not only that, it’s also just a great way to learn how to use different heroes!

Another difference with Rush is heroes start at level 10, the max Hero level in the game. So, what that means is that you have access to all of a hero’s abilities from the get-go, making it even easier to get a feel for which hero is right for you. We highly recommend trying all abilities a hero has and figuring out what each ability does. Knowing the abilities in your arsenal is yet another way to being victorious!

Now you’re ready to GO GIGANTIC!

Now that you know all there is to know about Rush, we hope you’re ready to GO GIGANTIC and fight for victory when Gigantic: Rampage Edition  is available now Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One for $19.99. Oh, and if you have friends on other platforms, don’t sweat it – Rampage Edition will have crossplay support when it launches – giving you the opportunity to enjoy Rush Mode with friends no matter what platform they like to play on. With all that said, we’re excited to see you on the airship in Gigantic: Rampage Edition!

  • Starter Tips for Botany Manor, Your New Xbox Game Pass Puzzle Adventure

Starter Tips for Botany Manor, Your New Xbox Game Pass Puzzle Adventure

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

You haven’t played anything quite like Botany Manor, a new narrative puzzle adventure now blooming on Xbox Game Pass for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PCs, and Cloud. Playing as 19th century English botanist Arabella Greene, you explore a scenic manor, finding seeds of some very unusual plants and discovering how to make them flower and grow, filling up the pages of your Herbarium along the way.

Much of the game’s enjoyment comes from figuring out these horticultural headscratchers without assistance. But if you’re worried you’re becoming a bit of a late bloomer, allow me to plant the seeds of inspiration with a few spoiler-free tips to help you decipher these daffodils a bit faster.

    Every Document Matters

These plants’ very particular preferences mean that most puzzles require a precise answer. The little notes, newspaper clippings, and advertisements you find around the mansion will all help guide you in setting up growing conditions to make a specific plant happy – so read them! While many hints will seemingly have nothing to do with botany, like a book on English history or wind speeds in the Alps, all play a part in unlocking various locks and mechanisms to either manipulate the local environment or grant you greater access to the manor. There’s also an interesting story embedded in these notes, revealed through various correspondences with Arabella.

    Pick Up the Pace

Arabella’s leisurely gait may not be to your liking, especially as you’ll need to traipse back and forth throughout the manner to pick up certain items or to place a plant in just the right spot. To put some pep in her rather sluggish default step, hold down LB for a boost. Like… all the time. Even better, I recommend players activate Sprint Toggle in Accessibility settings to maintain that speedier pace. The game may be about plants, but there’s no need to remain rooted in place.

    Don’t Forget Your Map

It’s easy to get turned around in sprawling Greene Manor and its surrounding grounds, especially as you open up access to new parts of the property. If you remember passing by the Orchard, for instance, but forget exactly how to return, there’s a map for that! Press Y to bring up your Forgotten Flora book and tap LB to flip towards the front, where you’ll find handy, labeled maps of the manor’s interior and surrounding grounds, which handily auto update as you explore further into the game.

    Out of Order

While Botany Manor starts in a pretty straightforward manner, solving one floral mystery at a time and with materials and hints right in front of you, things don’t remain so easy. In later chapters, you will start to find clues for plants you may not yet have access to. If a hint or document seems unhelpful at the moment, don’t rack your brains trying to apply it to the plant at hand; it may make sense later. Keep moving, you can always come back as the game never locks you out once you’ve made it somewhere new.

    Sort Your Hints

Related: as the game progresses (chapter 3 and on), you’ll be collecting hints for multiple different flowers at once. It can be valuable at this point to pick up and read everything, then sort these hints in your book as you start to make sense of things. When all hints for a particular flower are found and correctly sorted, they’ll get satisfyingly inked into the page, and you’ll have a much better idea of what your next steps are and which hints can be ignored.  Even better, if you correctly place every hint in the Herbarium book, a succulent 100G achievement awaits!

Even with these hints, you’re sure to get stumped from time to time, but with a keen eye and some curiosity, you’ll complete Arabella’s Herbarium before you know it. Just keep planting! Botany Manor is available now with Game Pass on Cloud, Console, and PC – cue that download here.

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The 2024 State of Edge AI Report is out, and we’re proud to be in it — for the second year in a row!

“Edge AI is a crucial technology in this world of finite resources. It allows us to monitor and optimize consumption in real time: so the use of electricity or water, for example, can be optimized not just for today, but for the future. Manufacturing, agriculture and logistics can minimize their impact, with huge potential for cost savings as well as lowering our carbon footprint,” explains Fabio Violante, CEO of Arduino.

Edge AI has witnessed a remarkable surge in recent years, driven among other factors by the urgent need for efficient resource management and sustainability. Indeed, this technology leverages real-time data analytics and predictive modeling to enable proactive decision-making in a wide variety of sectors.

The 2024 “State of Edge AI” Report, curated by Wevolver, contains a plethora of examples and insights relevant to applications ranging from healthcare to automotive.

For example, edge AI solutions facilitate precision farming practices by analyzing soil moisture levels, weather patterns, and crop health data to optimize irrigation and fertilization, thereby maximizing yields while minimizing environmental impact.

In logistics and transportation networks, deploying AI-powered edge devices in vehicles and infrastructure makes real-time monitoring of traffic conditions and route optimization feasible. This not only improves operational efficiency but also enhances safety by mitigating the risks of accidents and breakdowns. Edge AI also facilitates the development of smart cities by enabling intelligent management of utilities, transportation systems, and public services through seamless integration with IoT devices and sensors deployed across urban environments. This empowers municipalities to optimize resource allocation, reduce congestion, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.

In addition to optimizing resource and energy use to reduce financial and environmental impacts, edge AI-powered systems can lead to significant cost savings by foreseeing equipment failures. Predictive maintenance was indeed the focus of our contribution to this year’s report, showcasing products like Opta, Nicla Sense ME and Portenta Machine Control and success stories (like AROL’s and Engapplic’s) that bring the benefits of edge AI into the realm of present, tangible opportunities for enterprises in any industry and at any stage of their development.

“Simplicity is the key to success. In the tech world, a solution is only as successful as it is widely accepted, adopted and applied — and not everyone can be an expert. You don’t have to know how electricity works to turn on the lights, how an engine is built to drive a car, or how large language models were developed to write a ChatGPT prompt: that plays a huge part in the popularity of these tools,” Violante adds. “That’s why, at Arduino, we make it our mission to democratize technologies like edge AI — providing simple interfaces, off-the-shelf hardware, readily available software libraries, free tools, shared knowledge, and everything else we can think of. We believe edge AI today can become an accessible, even easy-to-use option, and that more and more people across all industries, in companies of all sizes, will be able to leverage this innovation to solve problems, create value, and grow.”

  • Localising AI education: Adapting Experience AI for global impact

Localising AI education: Adapting Experience AI for global impact

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

It’s been almost a year since we launched our first set of Experience AI resources in the UK, and we’re now working with partner organisations to bring AI literacy to teachers and students all over the world.

Developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Google DeepMind, Experience AI provides everything that teachers need to confidently deliver engaging lessons that will inspire and educate young people about AI and the role that it could play in their lives.

Over the past six months we have been working with partners in Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, and Romania to create bespoke localised versions of the Experience AI resources. Here is what we’ve learned in the process.

    Creating culturally relevant resources

The Experience AI Lessons address a variety of real-world contexts to support the concepts being taught. Including real-world contexts in teaching is a pedagogical strategy we at the Raspberry Pi Foundation call “making concrete”. This strategy significantly enhances the learning experience for learners because it bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Three learners and an educator do a physical computing activity.

The initial aim of Experience AI was for the resources to be used in UK schools. While we put particular emphasis on using culturally relevant pedagogy to make the resources relatable to learners from backgrounds that are underrepresented in the tech industry, the contexts we included in them were for UK learners. As many of the resource writers and contributors were also based in the UK, we also unavoidably brought our own lived experiences and unintentional biases to our design thinking.

Therefore, when we began thinking about how to adapt the resources for schools in other countries, we knew we needed to make sure that we didn’t just convert what we had created into different languages. Instead we focused on localisation.

Educators doing an activity about networks using a piece of string.

Localisation goes beyond translating resources into a different language. For example in educational resources, the real-world contexts used to make concrete the concepts being taught need to be culturally relevant, accessible, and engaging for students in a specific place. In properly localised resources, these contexts have been adapted to provide educators with a more relatable and effective learning experience that resonates with the students’ everyday lives and cultural background.

    Working with partners on localisation

Recognising our UK-focused design process, we made sure that we made no assumptions during localisation. We worked with partner organisations in the four countries — Digital Moment, Tech Kidz Africa, Penang Science Cluster, and Asociația Techsoup — drawing on their expertise regarding their educational context and the real-world examples that would resonate with young people in their countries.

A video call with educators in Kenya.

We asked our partners to look through each of the Experience AI resources and point out the things that they thought needed to change. We then worked with them to find alternative contexts that would resonate with their students, whilst ensuring the resources’ intended learning objectives would still be met.

    Spotlight on localisation for Kenya

Tech Kidz Africa, our partner in Kenya, challenged some of the assumptions we had made when writing the original resources.

    Relevant applications of AI technology

Tech Kidz Africa wanted the contexts in the lessons to not just be relatable to their students, but also to demonstrate real-world uses of AI applications that could make a difference in learners’ communities. They highlighted that as agriculture is the largest contributor to the Kenyan economy, there was an opportunity to use this as a key theme for making the Experience AI lessons more culturally relevant.

This conversation with Tech Kidz Africa led us to identify a real-world use case where farmers in Kenya were using an AI application that identifies disease in crops and provides advice on which pesticides to use. This helped the farmers to increase their crop yields.

We included this example when we adapted an activity where students explore the use of AI for “computer vision”. A Google DeepMind research engineer, who is one of the General Chairs of the Deep Learning Indaba, recommended a data set of images of healthy and diseased cassava crops (1). We were therefore able to include an activity where students build their own machine learning models to solve this real-world problem for themselves.

    Access to technology

While designing the original set of Experience AI resources, we made the assumption that the vast majority of students in UK classrooms have access to computers connected to the internet. This is not the case in Kenya; neither is it the case in many other countries across the world. Therefore, while we localised the Experience AI resources with our Kenyan partner, we made sure that the resources allow students to achieve the same learning outcomes whether or not they have access to internet-connected computers.

    An AI classroom discussion activity.
An Experience AI activity related to farming.

Assuming teachers in Kenya are able to download files in advance of lessons, we added “unplugged” options to activities where needed, as well as videos that can be played offline instead of being streamed on an internet-connected device.

    What we’ve learned

The work with our first four Experience AI partners has given us with lots of localisation learnings, which we will use as we continue to expand the programme with more partners across the globe:

    • Cultural specificity: We gained insight into which contexts are not appropriate for non-UK schools, and which contexts all our partners found relevant.
    • Importance of local experts: We know we need to make sure we involve not just people who live in a country, but people who have a wealth of experience of working with learners and understand what is relevant to them.
    • Adaptation vs standardisation: We have learned about the balance between adapting resources and maintaining the same progression of learning across the Experience AI resources.

Throughout this process we have also reflected on the design principles for our resources and the choices we can make while we create more Experience AI materials in order to make them more amenable to localisation.

Join us as an Experience AI partner

We are very grateful to our partners for collaborating with us to localise the Experience AI resources. Thank you to Digital Moment, Tech Kidz Africa, Penang Science Cluster, and Asociația Techsoup.

We now have the tools to create resources that support a truly global community to access Experience AI in a way that resonates with them. If you’re interested in joining us as a partner, you can register your interest here.

Brands Hatch arrives alongside the Retro Racers Tour in Forza Motorsport Update 7. Download today!

Forza Motorsport Update 7 rolls out for download starting Monday, April 8 at 10:00 AM PT / 5:00 PM UTC on Xbox Series X|S and PC via the Microsoft Store and Steam.

Spotlight cars and new Career, Featured Multiplayer and Rivals events start on Wednesday, April 10 from 5:00 PM PT (12:00 AM UTC on Thursday, April 11). Update 7 will be live in the game for 5 weeks before Update 8 is released in mid-May. Update 8 will not include a track – our next track release is scheduled for Update 9, expected to be available in June.

    Game Improvements and Release Notes

Update 7 reduces the installation footprint of Forza Motorsport by around 15-20%, decreasing its file size by 25GB on Xbox Series X|S and 29GB on PC. To accommodate this optimization, today’s update will be slightly larger than usual at 15GB.

Update 7 also introduces new experience improvements to the game, including changes to Forza Race Regulations and Proximity Arrows, as well as fixes to Multiplayer and the Livery Editor, and Le Mans track.

Below is a snapshot of the fixes contained in Update 7. Head on over to Forza Support to find the full release notes for this version:

    • Fixed a PC stability issue where the player would encounter an infinite loading screen when selecting Design & Paint for a car that hasn’t been purchased. [1665348]

    • We’ve added new PC audio settings for sample rate and buffer size which can be adjusted to reduce CPU usage. [1652110]

    • Proximity arrows are now enabled for all players by default in Multiplayer.

    • Proximity arrows now angle themselves based on car world position relative to the player car and camera rather than screen-space projection, providing more accurate arrow directions especially in non-chase camera views. [1637283]

    • Added new uniform “Scale” and non-uniform “Stretch” tools to replace “Size.” These can be applied to individual decals or layer groups.

    • Fixed an issue where Shared Tunes were not appearing after the 8th tune in Search Results. [1663755]

    • Updates to numerous textures have been made on the Le Mans Full Circuit and Old Mulsanne Circuit to address various misplaced and low-resolution textures visible in multiple zones, including track signage and overpass inscriptions. [1723655]

This update introduces the Brands Hatch track to Career, Multiplayer, Free Play and Rivals.

Located a short drive from London, Brands Hatch is widely considered one of the most iconic sporting venues in Europe and has a rich history of hosting a variety of motorsport events, including the British Grand Prix.

Brands Hatch is also renowned for its challenging layout, with a combination of fast straights, tight corners, and elevation changes that make it a favorite among drivers and fans alike. Its first turn, the Paddock Hill Bend, sees cars diving downhill at high speed and then climbing back up into the tight hairpin turn called Druids.

The Grand Prix layout features three high speed corners called Hawthorns, Westfield and Sheene Curve which challenge drivers to be millimeter-accurate when choosing their turn in points on this relatively narrow circuit. Meanwhile, the Indy layout is a short 1.2-mile thrill ride which pairs perfectly with slower cars and grassroots events.

Get ready to race with three new deliveries coming to Car Pass holders in Update 7. These include the 2019 Ginetta G55 GT4, 1970 Matra-Simca #146 Equipe Matra-Simca MS650 Tour de France and 2016 Ligier #11 Euro international JS P3.

Insights into students’ attitudes to using AI tools in programming education

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Educators around the world are grappling with the problem of whether to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the classroom. As more and more teachers start exploring the ways to use these tools for teaching and learning computing, there is an urgent need to understand the impact of their use to make sure they do not exacerbate the digital divide and leave some students behind.

Sri Yash Tadimalla from the University of North Carolina and Dr Mary Lou Maher, Director of Research Community Initiatives at the Computing Research Association, are exploring how student identities affect their interaction with AI tools and their perceptions of the use of AI tools. They presented findings from two of their research projects in our March seminar.

How students interact with AI tools

A common approach in research is to begin with a preliminary study involving a small group of participants in order to test a hypothesis, ways of collecting data from participants, and an intervention. Yash explained that this was the approach they took with a group of 25 undergraduate students on an introductory Java programming course. The research observed the students as they performed a set of programming tasks using an AI chatbot tool (ChatGPT) or an AI code generator tool (GitHub Copilot).

The data analysis uncovered five emergent attitudes of students using AI tools to complete programming tasks:

    • Highly confident students rely heavily on AI tools and are confident about the quality of the code generated by the tool without verifying it
    • Cautious students are careful in their use of AI tools and verify the accuracy of the code produced
    • Curious students are interested in exploring the capabilities of the AI tool and are likely to experiment with different prompts
    • Frustrated students struggle with using the AI tool to complete the task and are likely to give up
    • Innovative students use the AI tool in creative ways, for example to generate code for other programming tasks

Whether these attitudes are common for other and larger groups of students requires more research. However, these preliminary groupings may be useful for educators who want to understand their students and how to support them with targeted instructional techniques. For example, highly confident students may need encouragement to check the accuracy of AI-generated code, while frustrated students may need assistance to use the AI tools to complete programming tasks.

An intersectional approach to investigating student attitudes

Yash and Mary Lou explained that their next research study took an intersectional approach to student identity. Intersectionality is a way of exploring identity using more than one defining characteristic, such as ethnicity and gender, or education and class. Intersectional approaches acknowledge that a person’s experiences are shaped by the combination of their identity characteristics, which can sometimes confer multiple privileges or lead to multiple disadvantages.

In the second research study, 50 undergraduate students participated in programming tasks and their approaches and attitudes were observed. The gathered data was analysed using intersectional groupings, such as:

    • Students who were from the first generation in their family to attend university and female
    • Students who were from an underrepresented ethnic group and female

Although the researchers observed differences amongst the groups of students, there was not enough data to determine whether these differences were statistically significant.

Who thinks using AI tools should be considered cheating?

Participating students were also asked about their views on using AI tools, such as “Did having AI help you in the process of programming?” and “Does your experience with using this AI tool motivate you to continue learning more about programming?”

The same intersectional approach was taken towards analysing students’ answers. One surprising finding stood out: when asked whether using AI tools to help with programming tasks should be considered cheating, students from more privileged backgrounds agreed that this was true, whilst students with less privilege disagreed and said it was not cheating.

This finding is only with a very small group of students at a single university, but Yash and Mary Lou called for other researchers to replicate this study with other groups of students to investigate further.

Acknowledging differences to prevent deepening divides

As researchers and educators, we often hear that we should educate students about the importance of making AI ethical, fair, and accessible to everyone. However, simply hearing this message isn’t the same as truly believing it. If students’ identities influence how they view the use of AI tools, it could affect how they engage with these tools for learning. Without recognising these differences, we risk continuing to create wider and deeper digital divides.
