Unlike other smartphones, the Plumage has a keypad unlike any that you’ve seen before…it’s a fold-down variety.

When not in use, the keypad folds back up and doubles as a smart cover for protecting the device’s screen. One caveat: it reduces the screen size.

Developer ports Cydia to iOS 7

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

As we eagerly wait for the evad3rs team to release a jailbreak for iOS 7, cjori, developer of Cydia tweaks such as Dashboard X, Applocker etc. has published some screenshots of what Cydia, the unofficial App Store look like on iOS 7.

RedmondPie reports that cjori has told them that he has managed to tether jailbreak his iPhone 4 running on iOS 7.0.2 usingOpenSn0w. He managed to successfully port Cydia to iOS 7, though unofficially.

Cydia was recompiled from source with the iOS 7 SDK and he manually debugged all of the issues encountered using various UNIX tools. When asked if he will be releasing this iOS 7 compatible Cydia along with instructions on how to tether-jailbreak iOS 7, he said that while Cydia itself seems to be stable, a lot of the things revolving around it and jailbreak in general are very unstable, therefore he does not plan on releasing it at this point, but he might do so in future once things are fixed.

Jay Freeman aka saurik, founder of Cydia, has also clarified to RedmondPie that the Cydia port by cjori is a third-party compilation of the modified code from a previous release of Cydia, and not indicative of what Cydia will look like on iOS 7.

As for the jailbreak status, the evad3rs team seem to be very busy working on the iOS 7 jailbreak, as we haven’t heard from them since the last update, where pod2g had mentioned that he was increasingly confident there will be an iOS 7 jailbreak.

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

And the rumor windmill spins again! New leaks have reported what it could be the rear shell of the new Apple iPad 5 and taking into account that the last rumors about Apple products are all eventually being a reality, this shouldn’t be different…

    DSC_0002 DSC_0018

An array of new photos featuring alleged rear shells of the next-generation iPad in „Space Gray“ and silver have been posted by Australian writer Sonny Dickson. The photos, which also depict some of the internals of the iPad, come two weeks after Apple debuted a new space gray color to replace the slate black used on both the iPhone 5 and iPod lines.

The new photos also emerge just under a week after a purported second-generation iPad mini shell was spotted in the same space gray color. A day before that, a somewhat sketchy report from C Technology claimed that both the full-sized iPad and iPad mini would be available in the same three colors seen on the iPhone 5s. While space gray and silver have been seen, a gold rear shell has yet to appear.

The images above might be our first look at redesigned stock apps in Google’s upcoming Android 4.4 “KitKat” update.

We’ve been reporting on a lot of Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 leaks since we first discovered an unannounced Nexus device in Google’s promotional video for the upcoming OS update.

While images of the Nexus 5 have leaked several times– we posted exclusive photos and video of the device earlier this week– we have yet to get a good look at Android 4.4 KitKat.

Today another reader reached out with the photos above claiming to show redesigns of the phone dialer and messaging apps on KitKat.

The images show new lighter color, grey icons on the status bar, which lines up with our leaked video of the Nexus 5 and a screenshot for a Google Keyboard update spotted by AndroidPolice yesterday.

The images also appear to show a colored status bar that changes depending on the color scheme of the app.

Sony exec would like PlayStation games to be ‚playable on all devices‘

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

We heard alot about the ‚Cloud Power‘ from Microsoft in regard to improving the performance of XB1, but Sony is taking a differ route with their ‚Cloud Power‘ and it is all about ’streaming PlayStation‘ games, and at first they are launching it in 2014 to handle streaming PS3 games to PS4, and also there is alot of talk about the new VitaTV doing streaming ’services‘, but now the Sony Worldwide Boss for its studios, thinks in the future streaming PlayStation games will be expanded to ‚all devices‘ including even SmartTV’s, SmartPhones, Tablets, and not just devices carrying the ‚Sony‘ label.

    icon_xl

Speaking to Dengeki Online (translated by DualShockers), SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida suggested this could be achieved by utilising the capabilities of cloud networks like Gaikai.

„Speaking of the ultimate goal,“ he said, „we would like to deliver PlayStation games to all devices. So we’re considering various things like PC, TVs, Blu-ray players, smartphones and tablets. We hope to continue to expand not only to Sony devices, but even to devices other than Sony’s. This is still being studied.

„We previously spoke about PlayStation going from hardware to something closer to a service, regardless of the device – of course PlayStation will still be the centre, but I think we would like to expand to different things.“

Yoshida said during Tokyo Game Show last week that a number of PS3 games will be available to play on other PlayStation devices beginning next year in North America.

„We are planning to start serving PS3 games on cloud servers in the States next year for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita – and that means PS Vita TV as well – and expand in regions and content.“

David Perry, the Sony employee who managed Gaikai when it was independent, has previously suggested that the ultimate goal is to allow all PS3, PS2 and PSone games to be accessible via the cloud.

iPhone 5 touch screen input is faster than any Android out there

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

This is interesting, it seems that the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4 have the fastest touch screens of any smartphone to date, according to Agawi, a new company with a lot of spare time to experiment with this kind of things.

    touchmarks

    According to MacRumors:

Using a 240fps high frame rate camera along with a custom-built device called a Touchscope, Agawi measured the App Response Time (ART) of several different smartphones. The ART is the latency experienced between the time a user touches the device display to the device’s on-screen response.

Apple’s iPhone demonstrated a minimum app response time (MART) of 55 milliseconds, a much better performance than the Galaxy S4, which had a MART of 114ms. The Lumia 928 had a similar high MART time of 117ms, and the iPhone 5’s closest competitor was the iPhone 4, with a MART of 85. The HTC One and the Moto X had the highest MART times, coming in at 121 and 123ms, respectively.

App responsiveness is judged by how quickly the app can respond to your inputs,“ said Rohan Relan, cofounder and CEO of Agawi. „Smartphones with touchscreens that have lower MART scores feel snappier. This is probably why, to many users, the iPhone keyboard feels more responsive than an Android phone keyboard.

  • Hackers bypass Apple’s new Touch ID system

Hackers bypass Apple’s new Touch ID system

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

European hacker association Chaos Computer Club claims to have successfully bypassedApple’s Touch ID system included in the just released iPhone 5S „using easy everyday means.“

Well, they claim it’s easy, but the method actually requires a 2400 DPI photograph of someone’s fingerprint from a glass surface, which is then laser printed at 1200 DPI and used to create a thin latex sheet that serves as the fake…

    sfingerprinthack1

While the hackers claim the method is easy, it’s complicated enough that most iPhone 5S users aren’t as likely to have their security compromised by an everyday thief who would have to be willing to obtain a high-resolution photograph of a fingerprint and produce a physical fake. (It’s also not nearly as easy to bypass Touch ID with this method as, say, fooling Android’s Face Unlock feature with a simple photo of a person). But the method’s relative simplicity, which involves photographing a fingerprint left behind on a surface and then creating a glue model of it, calls the sophistication of Touch ID’s technology into question. Before Touch ID was officially announced, Wired’s Bruce Schneier noted that fingerprint readers have long faced vulnerabilities, and that the simplest readers can be fooled with a good photocopy.

  • How to get full access to photo gallery bypassing the passcode on any iDevice with iOS7 final.

How to get full access to photo gallery bypassing the passcode on any iDevice with iOS7 final.

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

The lock screen bypass method involves sliding up Control Center, tapping on the timer button and holding down the power button until the cancel option comes up. You then tap on the cancel button then double-tap the home button. This gives you access to the multitasking UI. While most apps are locked out, the Camera option is accessible.

This allows you to access the camera interface, but with the ability to scroll through all of the owner’s photos, not just the ones shot in the time since the phone was last locked — in the manner that the camera has worked for some time now.

Not only can you scroll through the photos, but you can also tap on the share button to send photos out via email or social channels like Twitter or Facebook. So once you’re in you can post photos to Flickr or send them via email. Though Greenberg characterizes this as ‘hijacking’ those accounts, that seems a bit dramatic. Still, there is potential for embarrassment or harm if sensitive (ahem) photos get stolen or shared out through your social accounts.

The bypass method has been verified by us to work properly and to not be overly difficult to execute. It took me about three tries to get it right on an iPhone 5 running iOS 7. As Greenberg notes, it’s hard to tell whether this works on an iPhone 5c or iPhone 5s as of yet. Of note: once you’re on the share sheet, you can choose a contact to send the item to, technically gaining access to the contact list (but not their details) of the device’s owner.

Note that this vulnerability is incredibly easy to prevent for now. Just visit Settings>Control Centerand toggle off ‘Access on Lock Screen’ to patch it up.

The discovery was made by Jose Rodriguez, a soldier in Spain’s Canary Islands, who has a history of discovering these tricky bypass methods. His secret? Plenty of time waiting in cars in his former job as a driver for government officials.

With past vulnerabilities, a software fix has come in a ‘point’ release of iOS 7. iOS 7.0.1 is already floating out there and contains a fix for Apple’s TouchID fingerprint scanner. So any fix for this would likely come in iOS 7.0.2 or later.

Apple has added a variety of security features to iOS 7, including Activation Lock, which renders stolen phones unusable, even if they’re wiped. But it looks like it needs another lock screen audit just to be sure.

The visual and usability changes to iOS 7 represent the biggest overhaul to the OS in the last six years. Apple has described iOS 7 as „the mobile OS from a whole new perspective„, and in all honesty, it is extremely difficult to argue with that description of what they have brought to the table. The firmware carries an all-new design, multiple new features and a plethora of new tools and frameworks for developers to dig into to create their apps. iOS is the foundation of the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and it’s available to download now for users everywhere around the globe.

iOS 7 final download iPhone iPad iPod touch

Apple’s iOS 6 has undoubtedly served us well over the last 12 months. After a relatively rocky start amid the Maps controversy, it has managed to claw its way into our affections thanks to a number of bug fixing updates and has managed to prove extremely stable ever since. Still, everything has a shelf life, and when Scott Forstall parted from Apple, it signaled the end of his reign over the design and implementation of iOS. Jony Ive’s vision of iOS is definitely polarizing, but it represents a new beginning for Apple’s mobile OS.

    iOS 7 iPhone 5

The firmware update will be available to all users with a compatible iOS device. iPhone owners using an iPhone 4, 4s or 5 will be able to grab hold of the new firmware for their devices, although some restrictions do apply to the iPhone 4 and 4s in terms of features. Owners of the second-generation iPad and above can also go through an OTA or iTunes download route with the same restrictions on older, less powerful tablets. The only iPod touch that is currently supported is the fifth-generation model.

Google Glass no longer requires tethering plan for smartphone data sharing

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

An Explorer Edition of Glass is already a pricey piece of tech, and smartphone tethering plans required to give it a mobile Internet connection have only made ownership that much more expensive. However, there’s good news for Google’s guinea pigs: the latest update to the headgear quietly implemented a way around the additional monthly fees.

With XE9 loaded onto headsets, the companion Android app pipes data to and from the hardware, bypassing both the smartphone’s Bluetooth tethering settings and extra plan previously needed from some carriers.

To match the change, the application’s notification icon sports two arrows to signify the flow of info.

We doubt telcos will be fazed by this development for now, but we don’t know if that’ll hold once Glass arrives on shelves and hits the streets en masse. We’ve contacted Google to find out if the feature will make it to retail units.

Microsoft mocks Apple’s iPhone 5c & 5s in a series of video ads

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

They called the video series ‚A fly on the wall in Cupertino‘, and poked fun at Apple’s design process for the iPhone 5s and 5c, showing satirical Apple product review meetings where two „employees“ attempt to pitch various features of the new phones to actors intended to resemble Apple CEO Tim Cook and Senior Vice President of Design Jony Ive…

Their list of pretentious colours, including ‚vermillion‘, ‚chartreuse‘, and ‚robins egg‘, is a dig at the new range of multi-coloured iPhones – and Apple’s notoriously ‚trendy‘ image.

Colours aside, they took aim at every element of the controversial new design, including the fingerprint reader and megapixel camera.

At one point, the actress hands a piece of A4 paper to ‚T‘ (Tim Cook): ‚Feel how light that is. You know how we did that? Megapixels – got them down to eight.‘

Picking apart Mr Cook’s speech at the launch on Wednesday, the actors make fun of phrases such as ‚the gold standard‘ and ‚unapologetically plastic‘.

    […]

One video went viral before Microsoft managed to delete it.

It opens with one of the colour-coordinated ‚ideas people‘ poking fun at the iWatch, which is still yet to hit the market after numerous mentions.

The actor says: ‚Sorry we’re late. My iWatch had to go back to R&D [research and development].‘

He proceeds to suggest random colours, with a flourish of his wrist, for the CEO to think about – while his colleague ‚translates‘ them into layman’s terms:

‚Vermillion, do you feel me?‘ ‚Pink.‘

    ‚Chartreuse‘ ‚Green.‘

    ‚Robin’s egg blue‘ ‚Blue.‘

The actress also translates ‚yeah bro‘ to ‚yes‘, and ’nah brah‘ to ’no‘.

He continues to mock how the model falls short of its description: ‚You asked us to make the gold standard of iPhone. It turns out that is super hard.

‚We made you an iPhone which is the colour gold‘.

The videos end showing a ‚#timetoswtich‘ hashtag.

So yes, Microsoft has since pulled off the videos from YouTube, releasing the following statement:

„The video was intended to be a light-hearted poke at our friends from Cupertino. But it was off the mark, and we’ve decided to pull it down.“

  • Apple Increases iPhone 5C and 5S Battery Sizes relative to iPhone 5

Apple Increases iPhone 5C and 5S Battery Sizes relative to iPhone 5

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

While poking through the FCC documents and piecing together a story on the network band situation for the iPhone 5S and 5C, I remembered that part of a normal disclosure is in fact battery size. Apple noted the battery on the iPhone 5C increased, and I’ve been curious about the 5S battery size as well given the different PCB photos with slightly changed aspect ratio that floated around as potential candidates for the 5S. Apple also doesn’t disclose the battery size in Whr or mAh on their tech spec pages, making this the only real place to find out outside of opening them up and looking once they’re available.

    iPhone Battery Sizes
    Device iPhone 5 iPhone 5S iPhone 5C
    Battery Size (Whr) 5.45 5.96 5.73
    Battery Voltage (Nominal) 3.8 3.8 3.8
Battery Size (mAh) 1440 mAh ~1570 mAh ~1507 mAh

It turns out that there are in fact some battery size increases for both the 5S and 5C if the FCC disclosure is to be believed. While I’m somewhat skeptical sometimes of the accuracy of battery capacities as reported in FCC disclosures (which I noted about the battery size for the Nexus 5), these numbers seem credible given what I’ve heard, the statement Apple made during the keynote about the 5C battery size going up, and what I’d expect with some board re-layout for the 5S. The iPhone 5S ends up getting an almost 10 percent increase in size versus the iPhone 5, the iPhone 5C goes up around 5 percent versus the iPhone 5.
