“John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio.“

„John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. • iOS Core Ported To Nokia N900, Opens Door To iOS Running On Non-Apple Hardware

iOS Core Ported To Nokia N900, Opens Door To iOS Running On Non-Apple Hardware

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Well known developer Winocm has managed to achieve “one of the core milestones” pertaining to a project he has been working on for quite some time. Those who follow the activity of the developer on his Twitter feed will more than likely know about the project he has been working on for quite some time. With a little help from Steven Troughton-Smith, Winocm has managed to port the core elements of Apple’s iOS operating system onto non-Apple hardware.

The benefits of this port aren’t immediately known to the majority of iOS users, but it does represent a significant technical achievement. The “proof” of port images have been provided courtesy of Troughton-Smith and show the core port of iOS successfully booting and running on a Nokia N900 smartphone from 2009. That particular hardware was originally shipped by the Finnish company running the Maemo 5 operating system. In addition to the N900 success, the developer has also stated that his port will successfully boot on various other hardware pieces.

    BZpcW6gCIAApfjj

It is extremely exciting news to know that this port is possible and effectively opens the door for others to look at the open-source implementation and build on it where necessary. In its current form however, it does appear to be for the purists and those who are extremely technically biased. There is currently no GUI support for this implementation – nor is there any planned in the immediate future – with the focus being on getting the XNU Kernel to boot on hardware other than the official Apple supplied kit.

    xnu-n900

As previously mentioned, the port will also play nicely with hardware other than the Nokia N900. For those interested, Winocm has detailed a number of hardware setups that are capable of booting his work, including the Texas Instruments AM335x (BeagleBone/BeagleBone Black) (OMAP335X) and ARM RealView Platform Baseboard for Cortex-A8 (ARMPBA8). The XNU Kernel is essentially the “core” of iOS (and OS X for that matter) and was built by Apple over a decade ago to form the foundations of their two operating systems.

At the time of writing, there wasn’t any great details on the future of this particular project. All of the work has been open-sourced and added to a repository on GitHub, meaning that developers all over the world can contribute their own offerings to the project going forward.

Nintendo reportedly working on an educational Android tablet

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Nintendo seems to be working on an Android tablet meant to be used primarily for educational purposes.

Nando Monterazo, a Software Engineer at Nintendo of America, shared via Twitter that the company is testing out the device, but it won’t feature traditional Nintendo games and will instead be for educational games only. However, Monterazo did mention that the games would be featuring Nintendo characters.

Here are some of his tweets:

Experimenting with a tablet of Nintendo, the system is based on android, fully modified and unified as a database of the tablet. #Android

At the moment just testing communication environment of educational games that will be shared between the kids using the tablet! #Tablet

Nintendo is testing only the „Android“ but in fact she wants a system written in C/C++ in a Unix environment for the system single tablet!

Many people will be wondering if games „Nes“, „SNES“ or „Game Boy“ the tablet will not have these games, educational games only! #Tablet

It is, a tablet with educational games for children with Nintendo characters….

…now the tablet is primarily focused for schools!! 🙂

Monterazo’s tweets have been deleted since the news broke, but this morning, he tweeted,„Amazing how the internet is dangerous, in my excitement I released information that should not, Now I’m out of the project who liked!“. Oops.

Keep in mind that there’s nothing official yet. A company representative only said that „Nintendo does not comment on rumors or speculation“.

  • The never scratching Phone, LG’s Flex phone actually heals itself after a key and knife assault

The never scratching Phone, LG’s Flex phone actually heals itself after a key and knife assault

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

LG has spent plenty of time hyping up the curved screen of itsFlex Android smartphone, but it’s unique “self-healing” capabilities looks to be even more useful.

The Flex’s rear is coated with a special material which LG says can heal itself after being scratched. Putting that claim to the test, YouTube tech personality Marques Brownlee took a pair of keys and a very sharp knife to the Flex’s back. The results will surprise you.

    lg_g_flex_self_healing_demo__-_youtube

The Flex mostly cleared up the light scratches from Brownlee’s keys (it didn’t completely remove them, but there’s a definite improvement). It was less effective at surviving a sharp knife cut, he notes that it “half-heals,” but this is (hopefully) a far rarer scenario for phone damage.

Brownlee also tried to “flex” the Flex by putting pressure on the phone’s screen to flatten it. The result? It simply snapped back into place.

It looks like the LG Flex can withstand the typical wear and tear of dropping your phone, having it in your pocket with a pair of keys, and other clumsy scenarios. Eventually, I expect to see similar material make its way to other phones (and hopefully, to your phone’s glass screen).

  • myPES – das ultimative Tool für PES 2014, Zweites Data Pack und neuer Videotrailer verfügbar

myPES – das ultimative Tool für PES 2014, Zweites Data Pack und neuer Videotrailer verfügbar

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

  • New iPhone 6 “Air” Concept Image Copies Moto G Customizable Colours Feature

New iPhone 6 “Air” Concept Image Copies Moto G Customizable Colours Feature

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

A new iPhone 6 „Air“ concept emerged online and included Moto G’s new customizable feature.

The new concept image is created by brightknight08. The iPhone 6 „Air“ features an all-new design with aiPad Air-like body and has customizable colours. There are new buttons as well, including a backlit proximity sensor in place of the home button and a silent button featured at the top that also functions as the iPhone’s power button. Moreover, brightknight08 packs a 4.6 inch Full HD screen display with 450 ppi in the iPhone 6 „Air“.

The newly released Moto G also boasts customizable feature that allows users to change the colours of the handset. Moto G turned the heads of many consumers as the smartphone costs $179 for its 8GB variant.

According to the latest rumours, the upcoming iPhone 6 features may include a solar wireless charging feature. One of the most common complaints on iPhones is fast depleting battery capacity. This feature aims to provide solution to the said problem.

This feature is supported by a patent filed by Apple back in February. Apple secured a patent for the use of solar panels in portable devices. This integrated touch sensor and solar assembly would involve integrating social cells into a touch screen by using electrodes that can pull double duty as a solar cell and a touch sensor.

Another rumoured feature that is making the rounds is the use of an extremely strong Sapphire glass for the smartphone’s screen display. Apple already used the technology on the cover of iPhone 5S and Touch ID home button. Sapphire glass is roughly 2.5 times stronger than the glass currently used in smartphones, many of which use Gorilla Glass from Corning.

Rumours claimed iPhone 6 will come with larger screen display with a range of 4.8 to 6 inches. Many analysts predicted that Apple will finally pack a bigger screen on the iPhone 6. Also, the next Apple flagship smartphone may keep the iPhone 5S‘ 64-bit A7 processor, M7 graphics chip and the fingerprint sensor. The next generation of iPhone may also include features Near Field Communication and larger internal storage that were skipped in the current handset.

iPhone 6 release date is still unconfirmed. There were speculations that the unveiling will happen early next year. However, reports claimed that Apple is adding more suppliers to increase the availability of iPhone 5S due to its strong demand.

  • Coin Is One Credit Card to Rule Them All

Coin Is One Credit Card to Rule Them All

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

There are lots of companies, including Google and Apple, that would like to replace your wallet with a digital version, but a startup has a somewhat less ambitious goal — replace your handful of credit cards with one super card.

Coin, a credit-card-like device, is set for a summer 2014 launch. As the video below explains, Coin swipes like an ordinary card. The difference is, the card holds up to eight credit cards, debit cards or gift cards. Coin provides a dongle device to users that connects to their phone and anapp that lets you download the card info.

    Coin

The device will cost $100, but the company is charging $50 for early adopters that preorder now. Founded by former PayPal developer Kanishk Parashar, Coin uses a patent-pending magnetic strip. The reader device employs Bluetooth Low Energy and Coin’s battery lasts two years, according to the company.

With so much energy spent towards turning smartphones into digital wallets, Coin’s idea seems a bit like a throwback, or at least a stopgap solution until those initiatives go mainstream. (Coin’s debut coincided with the U.S. launch of Isis, a mobile wallet initiative backed by AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.) Assuming the traditional wallet sticks around for a while, though, Coin might carve its own niche, especially if it can somehow incorporate drivers‘ licenses, tickets and library cards, among other stubbornly analog forms of ID.

  • Apple’s iWatch To Ship In Two Different Sizes For Men And Women

Apple’s iWatch To Ship In Two Different Sizes For Men And Women

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

It has been reckoned for a while now that Apple is in the process of developing a so-called “iWatch” product to be worn on the wrist. The rumor itself is certainly believable, particularly with the release of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear back in September, but the reports surrounding the product itself have ranged from the plausible to the far-fetched. Today arrives perhaps the most outrageous claim that Apple will be creating two different specifications of the iWatch – a smaller model for women, and a larger version for the predominantly larger wrists of the male population.

    20131113000871_0

Of course, as watch aficionados will be more than aware, real timepieces made for women do tend to be smaller, but for a smartwatch to follow suit would seem a bit of a step too far. But that’s the assessment of one industry analyst, who believes the iWatch will feature an OLED display in both 1.7-inch and 1.3-inch specifications – the latter tailored to women.

We do expect, what with Apple being Apple, that the iWatch will make something of a fashion statement, but for the company to go the whole hog and release the iWatch in differing sizes would make very little sense. It would also cause quite a bit of controversy. I mean, what would a smaller-wristed man or larger-wristed lady do when out shopping for the iWatch? Would the smaller-displaying model be inferior in any other way? How would Apple market such a product.

    iWatch-2

With the iPad mini having released last year, it would seem that the Tim Cook era of Apple is much more open to reason, but an OLED watch in two different sizes, for the two sexes? Personally, I cannot see this happening.

The analyst with the scoop on this one is David Hsieh, who’s the head of the the greater China market for DisplaySearch. Hsieh has a solid track record for making accurate predictions where the Cupertino outfit is concerned, and if he’s right on this one, it will also be the first time Apple has introduced OLED technology into its displays.

Many of its competitors in the smartphone and tablet industry use OLED displays, while the company has stuck religiously with LCD panels.

Ming-Chi Kuo, another well-connected analyst for CGI, believes the iWatch will launch in the second half of next year.

  • Social media helps aid efforts after typhoon Haiyan

Social media helps aid efforts after typhoon Haiyan

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Ten million people affected. Half a million displaced. Ten thousand feared dead. As the numbers roll in it is becoming clear that typhoon Haiyan, which left a trail of destruction across the central Philippines on 8 November, is living up to its status as one of the fiercest storms ever recorded to hit land.

    tweetclicker_ph2

Now it is being followed by another flood – of information. Disaster relief teams are pouring into the Philippines from all over the world, trying to get aid to victims amid a jungle of severed roads, shattered buildings and downed power and telecommunications lines. But they have a new ally. For the first time, social media is being mined by an army of volunteers to provide aid workers with real-time maps of who needs help, and where.

The Philippines is no stranger to heavy weather. According to the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters in Brussels, Belgium, it is the third most disaster-hit country of the past decade – exceeded only by China and the US. Most of its disasters are storms or floods.

And it’s getting worse. „We have had an unusually large number of tropical cyclones this year,“ says Jun Yumul of the University of the Philippines in Quezon City. „The average is 19 or 20. This year 25 made landfall.“ What’s more, weather patterns are changing and sea levels are rising (see „Climate change worsened disaster„, below).

    dn24565-1_300

    Hazard maps

The Philippines has a huge national programme to cope with the risk of typhoons and flooding – with natural hazard maps distributed and explained. Despite this, people are facing conditions they never experienced before: designated shelters that were expected to withstand the storm collapsed as Haiyan hit. The projected death toll far surpasses the country’s previous deadliest storm – Thelma in 1991 – and previous strongest typhoon, Bopha, just last December.

Delivering aid in such circumstances is always hard. „We’re operating in a relative black hole of information,“ says Natasha Reyes, emergency coordinator for Médecins Sans Frontières in the Philippines. „No one knows what the situation is in more rural and remote places, and it’s going to be some time before we have a full picture.“

That might be changing. These days, a problem facing relief workers is too much information, in too many places and too many formats. The need for triage becomes enormous, says John Crowley of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. „A decade ago, disaster relief workers got a few emails a day over sporadic satellite phones,“ he says. „Now the flood of messages reaches one per second, 24/7.“ That’s thanks to emergency telecoms infrastructure, such as the inflatable broadband antennas being deployed in the Philippines by Luxembourg firm, Emergency.lu. Relief workers cannot possibly sift through it all.

Enter MicroMappers’s global network of volunteers. „I had an email last night [Monday] from a relief worker in the Philippines saying they didn’t know what was going on outside the cities,“ says Andrej Verity of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA). Verity sent a real-time map of where people were asking for help and where destruction was greatest, created using data from MicroMappers. „They were ecstatic,“ he says.

    Tweet mining

MicroMappers harnesses volunteers who sift through social media coming out of disaster zones. „Anyone can join,“ says Verity. A volunteer is given a few tweets, for instance, tags them according to whether they are requesting or offering help, notes whether the tweets have imagery, and rates the scale of destruction pictured.

Volunteers are also helping to keep maps up to date using OpenStreetMap, which allows expatriates and people in the vicinity to work in a Wikipedia-style collaboration. „As of Monday, we had 770,000 edits of maps of the affected area,“ says Verity. The volunteers fill in roads and details not available on published maps.

The next step will be to create open software that lets relief agencies exchange information and data. „A lot of data is generated about an affected area during a disaster, which just disappears afterwards,“ says Crowley. That includes where and how the destruction happened. Relief agencies cannot share this information as they use incompatible systems.

So UNOCHA is leading an effort to develop a Humanitarian Exchange Language, which will allow data to be shared. This would let groups coordinate their response, see the big picture, and later analyse what happened. Ultimately this trove of data could help efforts to prepare for the next storm, by showing which locations and buildings were most vulnerable. If we can share the data we get from responding to disasters now, it may help prevent disasters in the future, says CJ Hendrix of UNOCHA.

„Collecting and analysing information learned from this event can help build resilient communities,“ agrees Yumul. „But climate uncertainty is a reality, so what we learn from Haiyan may only serve as a guide.“

This is a digital collectible trading card game and the mobile versions will be released sometime in the second half of next year:

    icon_xl (2)

Chief creative officer Rob Pardo said the touch-controlled version of the game for tablets is a great way to play the game, but „not everyone actually has tablets.“ On stage, Pardo showed a shot of the game running on an iPhone 5s.

The game was already announced for iPad, Mac and Windows PC. That version of the game is expected to go into an open beta next month, Pardo said, „but in Blizzard language, that might mean January.“

BlizzCon attendees will be treated to an exclusive Hearthstone card, Pardo announced, a gold card variant of the Elite Tauren Chieftan. When played, the ETC appears to boost the attacks of other cards already played with „power chords“ giving other players „the power to ROCK!“ Playing the card causes concert stage lighting and pyrotechnic effects on the playfield.

Blizzard revealed Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft at a PAX East 2013 panel. The free-to-play collectible card game entered a closed beta for Mac and PC in August.

  • Kim Dotcom’s MEGA Exits Out Of Beta With Improved UI, New Features

Kim Dotcom’s MEGA Exits Out Of Beta With Improved UI, New Features

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Earlier this year, Kim Dotcom launched MEGA into beta as the file-hosting service offers some nice perks such as giving users 50GB of storage for free among other things. It’s been ten months since the debut of MEGA, and today, the service has been taken out of beta.

With its exit from beta, MEGA is rolling out a number of tweaks and improvements over the previously beta version of the website. One of the first things MEGA improved was its web UI, which looks to offer a more streamlined look and feel over the previous version of the UI.

Some tweaks have also been made that focus on making the MEGA experience faster and more efficient, one of which includes local caching which only syncs changes from the last time you connected to the website. Sharing content with friends is also an easier experience as you’ll be able to upload profile avatars to help distinguish yourself on the service as well as the ability to see how many files a person is sharing with you and when they last updated their files. Now that MEGA is out of beta, the service is looking towards mobile as an Android app is currently available, while an iOS app has been submitted for review.

Windows, OS X and Linux apps are also expected to be relesaed in the next month

  • ‚Wizarm‘: A synergic computer box for a smart DVR, PVR and media player experience

‚Wizarm‘: A synergic computer box for a smart DVR, PVR and media player experience

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

‚WizArm‘ project creators have informed us about this device, which is basically a powerful HD-PVR packed with tons of features to make it easy capturing or recording a 2D or 3D movie clip. It can copy any HDMI source to digital, passing all security, etc.

Wizarm – DVR/HD-PVR/mediaplayer from Julien DUPAYS on Sketchfab.

The interesting thing is that this „All-in-One“ device also allows you to run Android apps and games on your TV. It’s Open Source and already Rooted. It can also run Linux!

The project is now on Indiegogo, and they need $200,000 to reach their goal.

    20130901092815-wizrec580

    Here’s the info:

Devices that let you run Android apps and games on your TV are a dime a dozen (or as cheap as $30 anyway). But the Wizarm might be the most powerful, feature-packed model to date.

It’s a set-top box with a dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 processor, 16GB of storage, 2GB of RAM, a large number of input and output options, and the ability to act as a digital video recorder.

A startup called Wizarm has launched an Indiegogo campaign for a hackable media player with DVR recording, HDMI pass-through, scaling and video overlay capabilities.

The Wizarm incorporates the same Samsung 5250 SoC that appeared in Google’s Nexus 10 tablet. This “Big.Little” hybrid SoC combines dual ARM Cortex-A15 cores clocked to 1.7GHz with four lower-power Cortex-A7 cores. It also offers a quad-core Mali-T604 graphics processing unit (GPU).

The Wizarm can multi-boot Android or Ubuntu, and considering the device is rooted and fully open source“, it can also load any other ARM-ready Linux distribution. The system ships with 2GB of DDR3 RAM and 16GB of eMMC 4.5 flash memory.

Additional storage capabilities are provided by a micro-SDXC slot and a SATA 3 storage bay. If that’s not enough, there are three USB 3.0 ports and three more USB 2.0 ports.

Both dual-band WiFi and a gigabit Ethernet port are provided for data sharing and Internet access, while Bluetooth 4.0 and IR interfaces connect various input devices. On the A/V side, HDMI is supported with separate in and out ports, and a DisplayPort connection is provided as well. In addition, the box provides S/PDIF audio out and analog line-in and line-out.

The device is designed to receive input form a USB keyboard and mouse, a PS3 or Xbox 360 joypad, an Android device, or even a Mac or PC, including Linux computers

While the specs alone are enough to help set this box apart from the crowd, the ability to act as a high-definition digital video recorder is probably its most unusual characteristic. You can use the HDMI input to record videos at 1080p60 resolutions.

Yet Wizarm worth a look by A/V enthusiasts and hackers, who might be interested in exploring the new digital video possibilities enabled by the device’s open source, rooted design. Wizarm dubs its device a “synergic mediabox for smart handling of digital streams,” and indeed it’s far more than just an overpriced Android media player. Yes, it can plug into your TV and play Internet video and display browser screens or run Apps, but it can also process and store recorded video from any HDMI/DVI-D source, as well as capture and enhance the video signal with features like scaling and overlay processing. Starting at $259, the box is touted for offering some features found only on PC video capture cards that cost hundreds of dollars more.

The campaign is up and running now over at Indiegogo with the goal to reach $200,000. The funds will be used to initiate tooling and manufacturing so that the device will become available in the market.

A pledge of $259 makes you an early backer to the campaign and snags you a fully functional Wizarm device which is expected to ship out by April 2014.

This is already a discounted price since once the early bird special is gone the regular price of $299 will kick in.

Geek Surgically Implants Computer Underneath Arm, Becomes Cyborg

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Geek and self-proclaimed „biohacker“ Tim Cannon is the first human being to have a non-medical computer implanted inside his body. It’s called the Circadia 1.0, and this smartphone-sized computer was implanted in Tim’s forearm without the aid of anesthetic or even a licensed doctor.

    diy-cyborg

In the future, Cannon can envision his flesh-mounted computer serving as a biometric hub, communicating with his smart devices and connected home.

If he can pull that off, what has begun as a Frankenstein-esque marriage of flesh and sensors just might end up as the first integration of a human being into the internet of things.
