New CEO waves goodbye to Silent Hill and Consoles!

Konami to now focus on Free-To-Play mobile games!

The interview originally ran on Nikkei Trendy Net, so take the translation with a pinch of salt in case any particular themes were lost in translation. According to the interview, Konami will no pursue the mobile market with great gusto and what I presume to be chutzpah:

Following the pay-as-you-play model of games like Power Pro and Winning Eleven with additional content, our games must move from selling things like ‘items‘ to selling things like ‘features. We saw with these games that even people who buy physical games are motivated to buy extra content. The success of Power Pro especially has motivated us to actively push more of our popular series onto mobile than ever before.

Gaming has spread to a number of platforms, but at the end of the day, the platform that is always closest to us, is mobile. Mobile is where the future of gaming lies.

That also means that established franchises could also be getting the mobile treatment, with Hayakawa detailing plans to possibly shift Metal Gear Solid and Winning Eleven onto mobile

With multiplatform games, there’s really no point in dividing the market into categories anymore. Mobiles will take on the new role of linking the general public to the gaming world.

In other, other words then, expect games starring your favourite franchises that are just barely fun and reward you for nonsense actions while seeking to extract some coin out of you. Or as South Park so adequately explained the freemium cycle:

Introducing the Lily Camera , Self-Flying Camera Drone That Follows Moving Targets

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Think of Lily Camera as basically a self-flying camera for people who don’t want to pilot a quadcopter while attempting to record video footage. Measuring a svelte 3″ high and roughly 10″ square, this 2.8 pound gadget can easily be pulled from a backpack and then tossed in the air. Its motors will start working automatically as the drone takes flight. Thanks to a sealed body, rain or snow won’t be a problem for this drone. Since there’s no radio controller, users just wear a puck-shaped tracking device on their body. It uses a combination of GPS and visual subject tracking to let Lily know your position, distance and speed. Once locked, Lily can be set to maneuver to keep you in frame or be set to follow your every move via a mobile app.

The camera it uses is capable of shooting 12.0-megapixel still shots, 1080p HD video @ 60fps, and 720p @ 120fps (slow motion footage). Plus, there’s a built-in mic in the tracker synced with the camera, so you’ll be able to capture audio from the ground. When fully charged, you’ll be able to get approximately 20-minutes of flight time.

MONKEY KING ESCAPE ERSCHEINT AUF MOBILGERÄTEN!

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Januar 2014 in China erschien.

The Back to the Future trilogy didn’t predict smartphones, but right now, a DeLorean iPhone case is the hottest accessory online, and for the affordable price of $50.

As you can see from the images and video, it’s an amazingly detailed reproduction of the iconic movie vehicle, with the phone itself housed where the car’s chassis would go. There are built-in LED lights and even moveable parts that allow you to fully use your phone when it’s in the case. There are a few caveats, or at least for those who prefer function over form: the wheels are locked into hover mode and you need to slide the bonnet across to use the camera, and users also need to flip up one side to reach the volume buttons.

New smartphone battery recharges in less than two minutes

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Your next smartphone could charge in less than two minutes.

Since first showing off the lab-based prototype of its ultra-fast battery charger, the company behind the device has moved much closer to making it a reality.

StoreDot, the nanotech startup behind the charger, has a new prototype that is smaller and doesn’t add bulk to the actual smartphone. During Mashable’s demo, the Galaxy S5 battery went from almost empty to 100% in less than two minutes.

It almost sounds too good to be true but StoreDot CEO Doron Myersdorf says it’s because the company took a completely different approach when creating its battery. Rather than trying to improve the capacity of the battery itself, the company redesigned the internal structure of the battery so it can charge rapidly. The tradeoff for this speed is the overall battery life is shorter— the battery I saw will last about five hours.

But by cutting charging time down to a minute or two— Mysersdorf says the final product will have a recharge time of well under two minutes— recharging once or twice a day is a nonissue.

„This is not trivial, it took us a lot of research,“ Mysersdorf said. „This is a design that is trying to achieve something that was not the goal before. Nobody thought about giving you less energy ,everybody thought about giving you more energy.“

There are some caveats. The battery is more expensive than typical batteries and Myersdorf anticipates the battery will add about $50 to the total cost of a phone. And though StoreDot has made prototypes that work with handsets currently on the market, smartphone manufacturers will have to make „some modifications“ to their devices in order to accommodate the battery. This means it will be up to individual companies to take advantage of the technology.
