  • Introducing In-Extension purchases, now in limited preview

Introducing In-Extension purchases, now in limited preview

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Last month at Developer Day at TwitchCon, we announced our plans to help you, the developer community, build your business on Twitch. Just as we’ve brought powerful monetization tools to creators, we’re now doing the same for you.

Today, we’re excited to launch In-Extension purchases, available in limited preview.

In-Extension purchases create a marketplace within your Extensions, which streamers can install to enable viewers to see, buy, and use digital goods within them. For example, imagine creating an Extension for a virtual pet where viewers can buy pet food within the experience, or an Extension that lets viewers buy stickers that appear on stream to other viewers. This creates further opportunity to customize and enhance interactions between streamers and their viewers, all while fueling your creativity by allowing you to monetize.

To start, we’ve partnered with a few developers for this limited preview. You can see these in action on select channels here. When viewers buy an item within an Extension, they support both the developer and the streamer, who share the revenue.

These Extensions enable viewers to purchase digital items within them.
    • Death’s Door by Shiny Shoe: In this gothic horror RPG Extension, viewers can purchase “Spirit Bombs,” consumable items that can cause an on-screen explosion, grant an in-game boost, or move the community closer to unlocking the next goal.
    • Live Pet by Porcupine: In this pet game Extension, viewers can engage with a streamer’s pet and purchase items and powerups to boost its progression.

We’re excited to roll this out to the entire community of developers very soon. Please let us know if you’re interested in building an Extension with the ability to monetize, and share your feedback with us in the forums.

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Get hyped for this week’s Twitch Prime Legend in Madden Ultimate Team: linebacker LAWRENCE TAYLOR, with an 83 OVR!

Hailed as one of the GOAT’s, LT tore up the NFL from ’81-’93 with the New York Giants. He won 2 Super Bowls, was first-team All-Pro for nine straight seasons, racked up a ridiculous 132 sacks, and is one of only two defensive players in the history of the NFL to win the MVP award. He didn’t just change other team’s game plans, he changed the game itself.

“Lawrence Taylor, defensively, has had as big an impact as any player I’ve ever seen. He changed the way defense is played, the way pass-rushing is played, the way linebackers play and the way offenses block linebackers.”

    – John Madden

If that’s not a legend, we don’t know what is. So add LT to your squad and show these young bucks how the game is played.

    About Twitch Prime Legends

  • Introducing an AWS Credits Program for Extension Development

Introducing an AWS Credits Program for Extension Development

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Twitch is dedicated to cultivating creativity and innovation within its developer community. To this end we have collaborated with Amazon Web Services to launch the Twitch Extensions AWS Credits Program.

The aim of this program is to provide selected developers the opportunity to create proof-of-concepts for new and interesting Twitch Extensions. Those approved will receive the support of Twitch and AWS through the direct application of AWS Promotional Credits to the AWS accounts of selected developers.

If you have a great idea for a Twitch Extension — and the team to build it — you are encouraged to apply! We’re particularly interested in seeing you create Twitch Extensions that:

    • Unlock new modes of interactivity between streamers and their viewers
    • Allow streamers to gain new insights into the sentiment of their viewers
    • Do fun and cool things with visualizing stream metadata and API data

    Application Process

Applications will be received via this form.

Applicants must ensure their application is complete and correct prior to submission. No additional information will be considered during the selection process. Applications containing incorrect information or omissions will not be considered for approval.

You may submit one application per month, and developers with multiple compelling ideas may also be selected for more than one project. Applications will be reviewed once a month.

    Selection Criteria

As stated, the purpose of this program is to support the innovation of Twitch developers. We are excited to see what you come up with, and are particularly excited to see ideas that unlock new levels of interactivity and innovation for Twitch creators and their viewers. All completed submissions will be evaluated by Twitch and AWS on the criteria below.

    • Customer value: How will this Extension serve Twitch creators?
    • Business potential: Potential for Extension to build viable business over time
    • Creativity & innovation: Ability to amaze and delight viewers when engaging with a stream
    • Use of AWS services: How will you use AWS services to power your Extension?

    Program Details

Each approved developer will be onboarded with an introduction to members of the Twitch Developers team along with relevant support documentation and — of course — AWS Promotional Credits applied directly to their specified AWS account. Developers accepted into the program are also encouraged to communicate across teams to help build through shared learning and value. This will be facilitated through the use of the Twitch Desktop App.

    FAQ

What do I need to participate?

    When are applications due?

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and will be reviewed and selected in groups once a month. You can submit one application per month.

When and how will I be notified of the results of my application?

We’ll notify you via email within 60 days of your submission.

    What happens if I’m selected?

    • You will be notified via email.
    • Then you celebrate!
    • Then you get to work.

What happens if I’m not selected?

Keep working on that idea, re-work your proposal, and re-apply next month for consideration.

    How are submissions evaluated?

We’re particularly excited to see ideas that unlock new levels of interactivity and innovation for streamers and their viewers. All completed submissions will be evaluated by Twitch and AWS on the criteria below.

    • Customer value: How will this serve Twitch content creators?
    • Business potential: Prospects of building a viable business via the Extension over time
    • Creativity & innovation: Ability to amaze and delight viewers when engaging with a stream
    • Use of AWS services: How will you use AWS services to power your Extension?

Can I submit more than one idea / application?

Yes, you absolutely can! But please submit each idea separately, and only one per month.

Do I need to build an Extension before I submit an application?

No, you can submit an idea in any stage of development!

What can I use the AWS Promotional Credits for?

    • API Gateway is probably a good choice
    • Maybe you’d also like to use Lambda (because Twitch Scale™)
    • DynamoDB could be a thing you need as well
    • Any other AWS services necessary for development of your Twitch Extension

Can I use AWS Promotional Credits for costs unrelated to Extensions development?

    Nope.

I have another question. Who do I ask?

    Visit us in the forums!

    Terms & Conditions

AWS Promotional Credits will be awarded by AWS and Twitch based on the criteria above. By accepting the AWS Credits you agree to describe your experience developing your Extension for our use in promoting Extensions and AWS. AWS Credits received under this offer may only be used for testing and development of your Extension, not for production usage, and are subject to the AWS Promotional Credit Terms and Conditions, currently available at https://aws.amazon.com/awscredits.

You can choose one of seven new image options under the Profile Picture section of your profile settings.

Of course, you can still upload your own photo. We increased the maximum file size limit from 3MB to 10MB, so you can be 3.33x more creative.

As always, we’d love to hear your feedback. Let us know what you think @twitch!

  • JTV usernames are now yours for the taking

JTV usernames are now yours for the taking

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

We’re publicly releasing the nearly 30 million inactive usernames that were used on Twitch’s predecessor, Justin.tv.

These highly coveted names have been unavailable since we retired the Justin.tv brand a few years ago, but we’re excited to finally make them available again. You’re welcome, xXNewbLord07Xx.

To commemorate this, we’re resetting the 60-day rename cooldown on all accounts that have changed their names already. Simply go to your Profile Settings. Beside your username you’ll see text indicating that you’re eligible to make a name change.

Once you’ve changed your name, the abandoned username will be held by Twitch for a minimum of six months. We may decide to return it to the pool of available usernames for the community and new users. We will not recycle Partner usernames, except in special circumstances.

We often receive requests for taken but inactive usernames. Unfortunately, at this time, we still do not accept direct requests to take a name from another existing account. Inactive usernames are subject to our username recycle and reuse policy. Please see this blog for more information on how that works.

Please note, streamers, that you will lose access to your dashboard stats if you change your username. To preserve your streamer stats, you must export them prior to changing your username. It should also be noted that the URL for your channel page will change and the old one will not redirect to your new one, so be sure to update the link wherever you are using it externally.

There is a lot to consider when changing your username, but we hope you’ll get some good use out of this tool.

*Important clarification to Affiliates only: An earlier email stated that affiliate usernames will not be recycled. We want to clarify that if you change your username, your old username may be recycled after 6 months.

  • This Week’s Twitch Prime Legend for Madden — Earl Campbell

This Week’s Twitch Prime Legend for Madden — Earl Campbell

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Get your hit stick ready, because this week’s Twitch Prime Legend is Houston Oilers bruiser Earl Campbell, with an 83 OVR!

Normally running backs try to avoid defenders, but Earl Campbell just ran right through them. Drafted #1 by the Oilers in 1978, he had an immediate impact on defender’s bodies and the league as a whole. He was named NFL Rookie of the Year and the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year in each of his first three seasons. Which is what happens when you average nearly 1,700 rushing yards per season. He was basically the Kool Aid man, busting through defensive brick walls with ease. OHHHH YAAAA, he was filthy.

After retirement, he founded Earl Campbell Meat Products, Inc. which sells Earl Smoked Sausage and other food products. We recommend buying some of that protein so you can be strong like Earl.

    About Twitch Prime Legends

We’re teaming up with EA Sports Madden NFL 18 to give Twitch Prime Members at least an 83 rated Madden Ultimate Team Twitch Prime Legend and Collectible every week from 8/22–2/3. That’s up to 25 retired NFL ballers for you to add to your roster, plus collectibles to jack up their stats to a 90 OVR.

When you join Twitch Prime, you can claim your 83 rated Earl Campbell + 1 Collectible in addition to an 85 OVR Reggie White + 5 Collectibles, allowing you to automatically start with a 90 OVR Legend immediately. So start a free 30-day trial, or link your current Prime account to Twitch here.

NOTE: Throughout the promotion, Twitch Prime Legends will be available to players who have claimed them for 30 days after the Twitch Prime Legend is release. Players must log into Madden at least once every 30 days to receive weekly content.

  • We’re hardcore! We’re hardcore! House of Hardcore 35 airs live only on Twitch

We’re hardcore! We’re hardcore! House of Hardcore 35 airs live only on Twitch

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

For over 25 years, professional wrestler Tommy Dreamer has pushed his body to the limit to entertain audiences worldwide. He helped change the face of wrestling as we know it during his years as the “Innovator of Violence.” Now he’s about to do it again as his promotion, House of Hardcore, airs live, exclusively on Twitch for the very first time this Saturday, November 18 at 5PM PT.

House of Hardcore was founded to be what Tommy Dreamer calls “an alternative viewing option for professional wrestling.” It’s one part legendary wrestlers, one part young stars, and a whole lot of blood, sweat and tears inside the squared circle. As Dreamer states more succinctly, House of Hardcore is “No politics. No BS. Just wrestling.”

It’s also no coincidence that the first House of Hardcore show on Twitch will emanate from The 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, PA. You may not be familiar with its present name, but long time wrestling fans definitely know the legend of the world’s most notorious bingo hall. “I brought my first Twitch show to the Arena purposely,” says Dreamer. “I got to witness so many wrestling moments live in ECW. Being able to now give those same type of moments to wrestling fans means everything to me. It’s been my home for a long time and will continue to be till the day I die.”

So, what’s in store for House of Hardcore’s first-ever live Twitch event? Tommy Dreamer vs. Joey Mercury in a first blood match, Nick Aldis vs. Billy Gunn, appearances by Austin Aries, MVP, Shane Douglas and much more. Watch and chat with other wrestling fans at 5 PM PT this Saturday, November 18, exclusively on Twitch.tv/HouseOfHardcore.

  • Twitch Prime members, get ready to drop the bass in Dub Wars!

Twitch Prime members, get ready to drop the bass in Dub Wars!

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Twitch prime offers up the game that PAX founders, Gabe & Tycho, deemed “a national treasure”. If you’re not a Twitch Prime member, you can sign up for a free trial at twitchprime.com.

DubWars is an action-packed arcade shooter that successfully combines music and gaming in a way never seen before. The game has been compared to the likes of Geometry Wars and Rez but the comparisons end once you realize that there is no ‘fire’ button.

Wait, a twin-stick shooter with no fire button? How can that be?

In DubWars, the music becomes your weapon as they fire in sync to the rhythm of the song. The developers teamed up with incredible EDM and Dubstep artists to create unique weapons and power ups that fire to the beat of the music. Bass, up beats, and, of course “The DROP” of each song all factor into each level’s excitement (and difficulty). You’ll need to analyze the risk and reward of taking on enemies, collecting ‘wubs’, or just frantically surviving the song.

    • 10 custom-built levels with amazing visuals and effects!
    • Discover and support both up-and-coming musicians and your favorite established artists!
    • Learn about the artists and where you can follow them, as well as download their other music
    • Progress through three difficulty modes by mastering the music and upgrading your ship
    • Complete objectives and Steam achievements, collect Trading Cards, and top the leaderboards!

“One game really stood out and quickly provided long hours of play, lots of cheers……and head-bobbing. That game was DubWars.”

    NerdFu

With music, we’ve all experienced the buildup and anticipation waiting for that beat to “DROP”. DubWars amps that feeling up to 11 and, if you can survive long enough to experience the payoff, destroying a powerful enemy with a massive wall of noise is one of the most satisfying twin-stick experiences out there today.

“If ever there was a game for EDM — it is DubWars”
     5 Stars —
    Without the Sarcasm

The game features ten (10) stages that span underwater levels to a “Giant Alien Brain DJ” headlining a concert. Each stage has multiple levels of difficulty which ramp and amp up the challenges to insane levels. The game also allows you to discover and support both up-and-coming musicians and your favorite established artists including:

    – Omni — Urban Metaphor

    – Dubsective — Synergy

    – Spock — Break It Up

    – Minecraft Universe — Eclipse

    – Celldweller — Tough Guy (Tim Ismag Remix)

    – Varien — Metalworks

    – Minesweepa — Leviathan

    – Totally Sick — Distorted

    – Summer School — Choose Your Weapon

    – NGHTMRE — MTRD

    – James Egbert — Menu Music

  • Give the gift of Twitch with Subscription Gifting!

Give the gift of Twitch with Subscription Gifting!

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

If you watched the TwitchCon Keynote, you might remember which announcement got the loudest cheer from the crowd: Subscription Gifting. We said it would be here in time for holiday shopping, and now we’re here to deliver! Starting today, you can gift 1-month subs to anyone on Twitch!

Since TwitchCon, we’ve been on a mission to launch new features that make it easier for you to show love to your favorite streamers. With the launch of Sub Gifting, we’re 66.7% of the way there! Next up: Purchasing Bits with PayPal. So stay tuned.

    How does Subscription Gifting work?

We all know someone that deserves a gift sub. Maybe they are especially kind or encouraging to others. Maybe they have the best memes. But for whatever reason they haven’t been able join the party and sub. Now you can open the door and invite them in with a 1-month gift sub at the $4.99, $9.99, or $24.99 level.

Just click their name in chat and when their user card pops up you’ll see a Gift a Sub button. Or you can click the Subscribe button at the top of the channel page, select Gift a Sub and then type their username into the search field to select your recipient.

After you’ve completed your purchase, you can choose to show a message in chat that you’ve just gifted a sub to someone. We’ll let your recipient know they’ve received a gift via Notifications in the upper right corner of twitch.tv. You’ll see any subscriptions you’ve been gifted on your subscriptions management page.

Now you can support the streamers you love, and make someone’s day who deserves a sub with Subscription Gifting. Give the gift of Twitch for the holidays, birthdays, or just because.

Partners and Affiliates: Create a Sub Gift Wishlist with Heroes, by GameWisp

As a perfect compliment to Subscription Gifting, we have a brand new Extension for Partners and Affiliates called Heroes, by GameWisp.

Heroes lets streamers shine a spotlight on the people who make Twitch incredible every day. Through Heroes’ Sub Gift Wishlist, Partners and Affiliates who install the Extension can call out viewers they feel are most deserving of sub gifts. Fans can then gift those lucky viewers a subscription right from the extension. Install it here.

    FAQ

    Can I gift someone a $9.99 or $24.99 sub?

    A. Yes, you can gift a subscription at all three price points: $4.99, $9.99 or $24.99.

Does a gifted sub count towards sub tenure? In other words, would a gifted sub extend my sub tenure if I canceled my sub but were still within the grace period for sub tenure?

    A. Yes, a gifted sub will preserve/continue your sub tenure.

If I receive a gift sub to a channel I’ve never subbed to before, and after the gifted month I decide to continue the sub, does my tenure start at month one or month two?

    A. Your tenure would start at month two, because gifted subs count toward sub tenure.

Can I buy a subscription to a channel for which I was gifted a sub?

    A. Yes, you can! When you have an active gift subscription to a channel, you can purchase a subscription either using the subscription button in the upper right of the video player, or on your subscription management page. You will not be charged until after your gift subscription ends.

I tried to give someone a sub, and the Gift a Sub button is greyed out. Why?

    A. If someone is already Subscribed or Banned in the channel, they cannot receive Gifts Subs in that channel. Banned users cannot send Gifts in channels where they are banned.

Can I buy someone an upgraded sub as a gift? My friend has a $4.99 sub and I want to gift him an upgrade to a $24.99 sub for a month.

    A. Upgrades are not currently available through Subscription Gifting.

Can I buy someone a recurring sub?

    A. Not at the moment. Gift subscriptions last one month.

Can I decline to receive a gifted subscription?

    A. When someone gifts you a sub, you will automatically receive the subscription, and the Partner or Affiliate subscribed to will receive the support from that subscription. You may choose to disable the subscription benefits if that channel does not suit you, but we want to make sure the support still goes to that streamer, as the gifter intended. You can disable Gift Subscription benefits from your Subscriptions management page.

    Are gifted subscriptions refundable?

    A. No. All purchases are final.

    How about team subscriptions?

    A. Subscription Gifting is not available for team subscriptions at this time.

Can I gift a sub from the mobile apps or from subs.twitch.tv?

    A. Gifting is not currently available from our mobile apps nor from subs.twitch.tv.

Can I gift a subscription through my Twitch Prime free subscription

    A. No, Twitch Prime subscription can not be used to gift a subscription to another user.

  • Twitch creators, get ready for Achievements and Stream Summary

Twitch creators, get ready for Achievements and Stream Summary

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

“Creators first” isn’t just one of Twitch’s values; it’s at the center of everything we do. And this year at TwitchCon we announced three new features for creators like you.

The first feature, Raids, launched shortly after TwitchCon. And today we’re so excited to tell you more about Achievements and Stream Summary, and how they’ll help you grow.

Our goal is to set up creators for success, so we listened to you about your biggest roadblocks and requests: more transparency when striving toward Affiliate or Partner status, and faster and better stream analytics. The following tools tackle these issues head on. Big or small, new or veteran, from gaming to baking, all creators can enjoy these new benefits.

These are the two exciting new features ready for you today:

Achievements: For many creators, becoming an Affiliate or a Partner is the dream. But the requirements to get there, and your progress along those steps, haven’t always been clear. Built with that in mind, Achievements are milestones that encourage creators to learn streaming best practices and interact with their communities. Following these milestones will give creators a clear roadmap to grow toward and apply for Affiliate or Partnership status.

Some of the achievements available to streamers starting today.

Stream Summary: Stream Summary shows you the information you’ll want to know about your past streams, all on one page. The page includes per-stream performance stats, top clips, top traffic sources, achievement progress, streaming tips and more.

Stream summary highlights top information about your last stream.

Want to learn more? Visit our help portals for all the information you need on Achievements, Stream Summary, and in case you missed it the first time around, Raids.

This is just the start of what’s to come. As always, your feedback is essential in showing us how best to move forward. Let us know how we’re doing on achievements, stream summary and raids.

  • A Look at the First TwitchCon Hackathon

A Look at the First TwitchCon Hackathon

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

TwitchCon was home to many competitions, but beyond the H1Z1 arena teeming with screaming fans and streaming celebrities, past the expo floor with mobile gaming showdowns and esports exhibition matches, one fierce fight was tucked away from the rest. At the end of a hallway, only dull chatter and the click-clack of keyboards could be heard.

These were the sounds of the TwitchCon Hackathon.

We invited university students from all over the country to come to TwitchCon and compete in teams of up to four for 24 hours straight as they raced against the clock to build software projects using Twitch’s suite of developer products. For some of them, it was their first exposure to Twitch’s API. For others, it was their first hackathon entirely — drawn forth by their love for our platform and a desire to improve the experience.

All in all, we saw 101 student developers flock to Long Beach last weekend representing a host of schools in Southern California as well as a few visitors from out-of-state, including representatives from Brown University, Arizona State University, and the University of Florida. The hackathon venue was the only room in the convention center open overnight, and most students took it as the free lodging it was: a stroll at 3am showed most of the participants asleep at their tables, on the couches outside the room, or on air mattresses.

Despite sleep deprivation and the ever-alluring draw of ditching the Hackathon to attend a Meet and Greet with DrDisRespectLIVE, our participants submitted an impressive 24 projects. Here are a few of the favorites:

Twitch Audio Split Stream: An extension that encodes certain audio sources from a stream with special “optional” markers, allowing users the ability to either receive or deny them. The demonstration showed how a viewer could mute the streamer’s background music while still preserving their commentary.

Kappa Cloud: A data visualization that showed the popularity of all emotes used on a particular stream. Similar to a word cloud, more frequently used emotes would get larger the more they were used.

Surprise Me!: A chrome extension that suggests a random streamer for the user to view, specifically focusing on streamers that are on the border of “making it big” with around 500 active viewers.

We were amazed by the ingenuity and tenacity shown by the hackers, and we can’t wait to see where they will take their projects in the future. We also want to give a huge shout-out to Major League Hacking, the official student hackathon league, for supporting our event and providing us with invaluable resources and expertise along the way. Thanks so much for joining us all in Long Beach, and we can’t wait to see what you build next year!

This ceremony is designed to honor not only those in the limelight, but the behind-the-scenes folks that bring the entire world of esports together.

    How winners are selected (you!)
Each of the 22 awards is open to the public to nominate their #1 pick, then once the list of finalists is released, the vote goes back out to the community to be the deciding voice if our panel come to a stalemate. If you haven’t voted yet, there may still be time by casting your ballot here.

Among the awards this year we have 6 new categories including Esports Videographer of the Year, Play of the Year, and Unsung Hero.

Finalists in the Play of the Year category are selected each month by the community from our Play of the Month shortlist. Working with the King of the POTM, TommyT999, we’ve pulled together the finest plays from global competitions to showcase just how amazing esports can be.

The Unsung Hero Award not only gives us a chance to raise the profile of those who really deserve it but also lets teams, fans, and event organizers get behind those individuals without whom they couldn’t do what they do, those people who are first through the door and last home at night but always have a smile on their face.
