  • Gaming for Everyone: The Accessibility Features of Forza Horizon 5

Gaming for Everyone: The Accessibility Features of Forza Horizon 5

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

    Summary

    • We partnered closely with both the disability community and Xbox and used the Xbox Accessibility Guidelines to implement the accessibility features in Forza Horizon 5.
    • Forza Horizon 5 accessibility features include American Sign Language (ASL) and British Sign Language (BSL) support for cinematics; a game speed modification setting that allows gamers to play at a reduced rate; customizable subtitle options; High Contrast mode, Color Blindness mode and more.
    • In addition to these accessibility features, we have core Forza games features that make the game more accessible such as being able to adjust audio and difficulty settings, as well as controller re-mapping and more.

From the very beginning of development of Forza Horizon 5, we made it a priority to incorporate accessibility features. We want everyone in the world to be able to experience our game, and with more than an estimated 400 million gamers with disabilities across the globe, it is vital that all players be able to tailor their gameplay in a way that works best for them.

With just one day to go until fans can play Forza Horizon 5 via Early Access, and the worldwide launch on November 9, we’re excited to share the new accessible and customizable features. Many of the accessibility features found in the game were created in partnership with players from the Gaming & Disability community, many of whom shared their experiences and the barriers they faced in gaming with us.

The accessibility features in Forza Horizon 5, which will be available at launch and can be seen in the video above, include:

    • A Game Speed Modification setting that allows gamers to play Forza Horizon 5 at a reduced speed when playing offline; this feature is great for newcomers and those who would like more time to progress through the game.
    • High Contrast mode that changes colors to make things such as menus and text easier to distinguish for gamers.
    • Color Blindness mode that allows players with color blindness to better visualize game elements. Players can adjust color blind settings independently for the UI and the game visuals.
    • For Subtitles, we know the importance of customization. With these, you’ll be able to:
      • Turn subtitles on or off
      • Adjust the font size
      • Adjust the background opacity
      • Ability to highlight key words
    • Customize menu and gameplay font size.
    • Screen reader narrator that reads text, buttons, and other elements aloud.
    • Text-to-speech and speech-to-text options for players that want to participate in Voice Chat and either need to send synthesized voice or receive voice chat as synthesized text.
    • Ability to disable moving backgrounds.
    • Notification duration setting, which allows players to set how long notifications in the game appear.

These are just some of the accessibility features we’re building upon, and we’re constantly listening to the community to make Forza Horizon 5 an inclusive experience for everyone to enjoy.  With this in mind, the team is excited to share we are also working on American Sign Language (ASL) and British Sign Language (BSL) support for cinematics in Forza Horizon 5. Coming soon, this feature will include a picture-in picture display near the bottom of the screen of an ASL/BSL interpreter during the cinematics in the game.

Forza Horizon 5 is coming day one on Xbox Game Pass on November 9 and to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, Windows PC and Steam. With Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, download and play it directly on your Xbox console or Windows 10 PC, or play games on your Android mobile phone or tablet from the cloud (Beta) with the Xbox Game Pass mobile app (in regions where available).

Introducing Tandem: A Tale of Shadows, Out Now on Xbox One

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is an innovative puzzle-platformer mixing two different gameplay styles and points of view with a rather gloomy atmosphere. The game explores the 19th-century era through the mysterious disappearance of Thomas Kane, a famous magician. Emma, our main character, decides to investigate the case alone. While heading into Kane’s castle, she stumbles across Fenton, Thomas’ precious Teddy Bear.

They both decide to find Thomas, whatever the cost.

While the story is indeed intriguing, you will have to explore this mystery by going through every floor and level of the castle. You will encounter spiders, clowns, octopuses, and even ghosts! Find a different way to vanquish these enemies and get to know what happened to Thomas Kane.

    screenshot

Gameplay-wise, you are playing two characters helping each other with the help of shadows. Thanks to Emma’s lantern, she can cast a shadow that will be useful for Fenton to walk on. Tandem: A Tale of Shadows uses two different cameras. One camera is top-down, and the other is 2D (horizontal). The top-down camera is used when you are playing as Emma, and the horizontal camera is used when playing as Fenton. Your journey will consist of activating levers, avoiding enemies, pushing obstacles, and other activities depending on which floor you are on. What matters the most is to acquire a diamond at the end of each level.

    screenshot

Enter the different rooms of the Kane’s Manor and get to know about each area’s unique quirks : a garden full of spiders that you must sneak away from, a boiler room with a giant octopus,  a kitchen full of cute little blob, and much more! As you will switch from Emma to Fenton regularly, you will encounter many different puzzles with their own twist according to the area you are in.

We hope this overview offers a glimpse into the unique experience full of chills, interesting puzzles and lore in the mysterious world of Tandem: A Tale of Shadows

Get ready for an amazing experience and join Emma and Fenton’s duo! Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is available now on Xbox.

Atlas – Sea of Wonders Now Available on Xbox One

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

This season we have moved away from the stagnant waters that plagued our previous seasons to reach more treacherous uncharted seas, and introduced a host of new features and season long gameplay loops. As the world continues to change, we are expanding the lore behind our main factions of NPCs, the Army of the Damned, the Atlanteans, and the Pathfinders. This season, players will be building Army of the Damned structures in our new Monument system. The culmination of which will be the first Wonder of Atlas, The Great Pyramid. We have introduced a whole new region-based map, and players will utilize the new Atlantean Portals to navigate the new world.

(Work in progress, Great Pyramid Wonder Concept Art)

    On the Horizon

Over the course of this season, we are introducing several new mechanics, structures, and endgame content that bridge the gap between our PVE and PVP communities. We are focusing on introducing more of the content PVP players will enjoy, while ensuring that every new mechanic can be used in a PVE environment. Our ship-to-ship combat mechanics are changing, and we are working tirelessly to implement the best features from the old ship system into our new modular ship system.

    Up Next

At the end of this season we expect to have the waters churning with another massive update featuring the Atlantean and Pathfinder factions, more map updates, and several new ships. New armors, weapons, and structures for players to decorate their bases with are in the works. We are also doing some backend work to improve the quality of our network for our official servers.

    Dev Team Update

Over the last season, we brought on several enthusiastic new devs, and we have been listening and incorporating the feedback into our plans. We want to let our communities know that there is a long-term plan to fix all the outstanding issues. As always, reporting bugs to us is very important, especially the bugs that have existed for a long period of time.

Finally, we wanted to thank the community for their continued support and feedback by adding the much-requested Mech-Monkey!  You can find the unique skin in-game right now!

Vigor Chronicles: Vengeance is Here to Change Things Forever

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

    Hei, Outlanders!

It’s November already and the year is slowly coming to an end. But before we say goodbye to 2021 we’ve got one last big update for you! Vigor Chronicles is here, but before we dive into what you can expect with this update, let’s see what happened during Season 9 shall we?

We released Season 9: Stalkers in August and with it something that the community had long been asking for – grenades! Besides frag grenades, Season 9 saw some performance enhancements for Xbox Series X|S. With update 9.1, we introduced not one but two Legacy seasons! We started off with Legacy season 2: Hunters followed by Legacy season 4: Warlords (by popular demand from our community). Finally, we released a minor update for a special Halloween event from October 20 until November 2.

As we say goodbye to the Stalkers, it’s time to turn the page for a new chapter in Vigor

The Seasons Are Dead, Long Live the Chronicles!

A brand new chapter begins in Vigor and we’re proud to introduce the Vigor Chronicles. From now on, we’re adding lore into the game and we want it to be reflected in the name. With this update, you get to unfold the Chronicles and follow the path of Vengeance!

Throughout the Battle Pass you’ll be able to collect cassettes that tell the story of Adam, a former soldier who wants revenge and is out for blood. Hence, Vigor Chronicles: Vengeance! Adam’s tale is one of misery, hope and heartbreak and we can’t wait until you get to listen to it.

    Vigor Chronicles Screenshot

We know that you’ve been asking for lore in the game for quite some time but we’re finally here! We’ve taken the first step in explaining what happened to the world that was left in this post-apocalyptic state. With Vigor Chronicles: Vengeance, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to introduce some lore and tell the stories of different Outlanders as well as background information on what happened in Norway.

There are 10 cassettes overall waiting for you in the Battle Pass – 1 for every 5th level of progression. Once you reach level 50, you’ll get to listen to the final cassette and be able to piece the complete story together. All the cassettes are available in the free tier of the Battle Pass because we wanted them to be easily accessible for all our players.

Our team is super excited about this feature and we hope you’ll enjoy listening to them as much as we enjoyed creating them!

Kjerstin Is Here As A New Shootout Map / New Shootout Map? Oh Dam!

In case you haven’t figured it out, the new dam map is called Kjerstin. It’s a Norwegian name that means Christian woman. Fun fact; it was modeled on a real life location close to Brno in the Czech Republic and we’re releasing it first as a brand new Shootout map. Of course, same as with Sawmill, only a part of the map will be available in Shootout but worry not because we plan to release the full map in coming updates. And if you’re wondering how it’s connected to the other maps, Kjerstin is located at the end of Grontheim valley.

In the meantime, the map will provide lots of close combat thrills. A new map is another thing that our community has been craving for a long time and we’re so happy to finally bring it to you so get ready for those intense fights atop a freaking dam!

Blind Your Enemies With The New Flash Grenades

That’s right folks! A new set of grenades are coming your way and this time, we’re introducing the M84 flash grenades. You’ll be able to blind your opponents for a brief moment, allowing you to take that lethal shot or give you the necessary time to make your escape out of a tight situation. In contrast to the M67 frag grenade, this one is military grade which means you can bring up to 3 of them into an Encounter. We’ve also done some rework into the aiming arc of the grenades. To put it simply, once you equip your grenade, the default aiming arc will be more like a straight line for a quick throw but you can chose a more curved arc for a longer throw by holding the aim button.

Let’s talk about the Battle Pass. First of all, we heard your pleas for more military outfits and this update contains some of the most menacing-looking outfits that we’ve produced. The Battle Pass of Vigor Chronicles: Vengeance also comes equipped with the Zealot outfits, Adam’s uniform from the cassettes, ballistic helmets, “night vision” goggles and some cool-looking weapon skins!

  • Behind the scenes of Ghostbusters: Afterlife game in Dreams

Behind the scenes of Ghostbusters: Afterlife game in Dreams

    Reading Time: 8 minutes

What do ghostbusting and game development have in common? More than you’d think, it turns out. But there’s one thing that comes to mind above all else: teamwork. Available to play in Dreams from today until February 28, 2022, Ghostbusters: Afterlife in Dreams is the result of an 18-week-long collaboration between Media Molecule, Sony Pictures, and the Dreams community.

After being contacted via social media, Impy-award winning community creators **Guillaume Chevrier** (aka [SlurmMacKenzie] and **Alfred Nilsson** (aka [byvsen]) soon found themselves in meetings with Mm’s Director of Operations and Strategic Initiatives, Gemma Abdeen, to discuss an opportunity.

Behind the scenes of Ghostbusters: Afterlife game in Dreams

“Like, what is this?” Nilsson found himself thinking. “This could be literally anything. Then when Gem told me what the project was and what I would be doing, I got really excited and hopped on.” Chevrier nods. “Same for me. I think it was the first call with Gem where she told me it was a Ghostbusters project, and I was really excited.”

The CRT-style menu screen for Ghostbusters Afterlife In Dreams, made by Martin Nebelong, Dan Goddard and Emei Burell.

Chevrier would be working on gameplay design, and Nilsson on animations. A short brief had already been put together by Mm and Sony Pictures. The game would have to last 60 seconds, as the cast of Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters: Afterlife would be setting their own scores that fans could try to beat.

Chevrier laid down the basics of the controls, including creating a version of the iconic Ghostbusters proton beam that the player could fire in first-person view, and set up much of the underlying Logic for the destructive environments. Media Molecule lead designer Richard Franke then came aboard to direct and help the team make some of the game-defining decisions (as well as do a bit of environment modelling, which Mm’s Dreams specialist Martin Nebelong would polish with lighting and effects).

“We asked ourselves, ‘What is the core experience of being a Ghostbusters team member?’” Franke says. “To me, that felt like the most important thing: we need to make the player feel like a member of the Ghostbusters team. Before you do anything else, you’ve got to get that catching of the ghosts to feel right.”

The first version that Chevrier had been working on featured fast and furious ghostbusting. “You could really quickly catch the ghosts,” he says. “It was more like they were jumping and you had to catch them when they appeared. But you could not feel the beam – so there was a lot of iteration where we tried to make the ghost move in a way that feels like you’ve got them in your proton stream, and you try to fight against them.”

The dark, intimidating, ramshackle barn in which Ghostbusters Afterlife In Dreams takes place.

The team spent time watching and referencing the original Ghostbusters movie, breaking down the behaviours of the ghosts and how the heroes interacted with them. “There’s the iconic scene with Slimer in the hotel ballroom,” Franke says, “and I was like, okay, this is the scene we want to emulate.”

They’d need to have ghosts flying around unawares, then in a behaviour phase where they’re aware and are avoiding being caught – before a ‘catch phase’, where they’re locked in a struggle with the Proton Beam. “The idea was that the ghost would have a bar that would go down when you’re pulling in the opposite direction. So it almost became like a fishing game, in a way.” Reduce the energy enough, and you could more easily pull them into a trap.

At first, players would have to manually throw out traps – but the team quickly realised they could create a more fluid time-attack experience by having it happen automatically.  The team based their work on the upcoming film Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

“We had a super-short clip of the new movie, where we could see unfinished effects and the new ghosts,” Chevrier says. Nilsson nods: “It was probably my favourite part of the whole thing, because you don’t normally get to see that stuff while it’s still in development.”

Working on such a huge franchise, the collaboration was carried out with the utmost secrecy. Nilsson had viewed a clip of the new enemies in action just once during a video call before he started his first attempt at ghost animations. “So I had to memorise how the ghosts moved, like the Muncher with its six arms.” How did he manage it? “There was a lot of improvisation in the animation, trying to figure out how the ghost moved, but the clip helped – and it definitely helped watching it a second time later on! The ghosts all move really chaotically, floaty, all over the place – it was really fun to try and nail that in the animation.”

A screenshot of a player using their blue and yellow proton beam to destroy the environment in Ghostbusters Afterlife In Dreams.

Interactions with the ghosts would be a key part of helping the player feel like part of the Ghostbusters team; another was letting the player leave their mark on the world. “We really wanted to get across the extraordinary damage that the proton pack creates,” Franke says. He recalls the comedy of the aftermath of that hotel ballroom scene: “They’ve probably caused more damage than it costs to actually catch the ghost! So we wanted to get a destructible environment in there.”

Wreak too much damage in Ghostbusters: Afterlife In Dreams, and the bill for the damage is taken out of your final reward. This led to the idea for the in-game function of the Mini-Pufts that appear in the new film, Franke says: “The scenes that we had seen of them, they were in a shop and they were destroying the shelves – so it felt logical that they would somehow increase your damage count, running in and kicking at fragile parts of the environment with their stubby little legs – animated with relish by Nilsson. “I had some footage of them looping on my computer while animating,” he says. “It was really fun to see how bouncy they were. And like, immediately, the puppet in Dreams started moving in the same way.”

With the ghost-catching and the waves of Mini-Pufts, Ghostbusters: Afterlife in Dreams truly started to take shape as a fast, frantic and tactical time-attack challenge – and started to reflect yet more aspects of Ghostbusters history.

“We wanted it to be a little bit like pinball, in a way,” Franke says, “where you’ve got your main thing, which is trying to keep the ball on the table, and that’s the catching of the ghosts. But then you’ve got to hit against the targets, which is your stretch goal – and then you’ve got another stretch goal, which is even harder to get. We actually stacked them up so you don’t see any Mini-Pufts until you’ve caught one ghost. So you’ve got a sort of ratcheting up of gameplay over the course of one minute – and then once you’ve shot a certain number of Mini-Pufts, the Terror Dog will start to appear.”

To say too much about the Terror Dog’s appearance might spoil the fun (although Nilsson is incredibly proud of his work on it: “It was probably the most challenging to animate, because I’d never animated a four-legged character before!”). But its inclusion in the game feels like a fitting homage to the secrets and surprises of pinball machines back in the day. “It’s very meta, but there’s something great about people talking about that stuff,” Franke says. “That’s why pinball was exciting. ‘Have you seen the thing that’s really hard to get?’ – a little bit like old-school video games. It’s nice to give the player things to look forward to, and to come back for – each time they’ll get a little bit better, their score will go up, and they’ll see more exciting things happen.”

A screenshot of a marauding Terror Dog in Ghostbusters Afterlife In Dreams.

The final result is a collaboration that pays homage to the Ghostbusters series’ past, as well as its present in Ghostbusters: Afterlife – as well as the power of Dreams, with the game itself developed in just 12 weeks. For its developers, the tonal similarities between the Ghostbusters franchise and Dreams itself – slapstick, a bit weird, but ultimately fun for all – made the collaboration feel like a (super)natural one.

“I grew up with the Ghostbusters movies,” Chevrier says. “For me, it’s something that evokes good memories. It’s creepy but fun, so you can watch it as a kid and you’ll be scared, but you won’t have too many nightmares – because it’s the funny side of creepy.” Nilsson agrees, pointing to the exaggerated movements of the films and how well it fits with both Dreams’ puppeteering tools and his own cartoony animation style.  Franke, too, sees the similarities in points of view between the Ghostbusters franchise and Dreams. “We both have a similar silliness – like, our Halloween event has this sort of kooky spooky Ghostbusters vibe,” he says. “So it’s definitely easy for us to fit that within our content.” But there’s another reason why he thinks this was a neat match for a collaboration. “The right answer for me to say as the director,” he grins, “is that we can make any brand fit! Because it’s just all about scope, and being sympathetic to the brand. Dreams allows us to create bespoke gameplay suited to any kind of brand.”

A screenshot of a player using a blue and yellow proton beam to catch a ghost in Ghostbusters Afterlife In Dreams.

Beyond the versatility and power of the tools, however, the real shared strength at the heart of the Ghostbusters franchise and Dreams – and this project – is undoubtedly community and collaboration, from the team at Sony Pictures, to Media Molecule, and the talented pool of creators using Dreams. “You know, we’re only a small studio, in the grand scheme of the game industry,” Franke says. “So the community is very valuable to us as a resource. Working with the community is lovely because they’re very respectful, they’re not full of cynicism – they’re very happy to be helping out, they’re happy to be being paid for their time to make these games. I think it’s probably very scary on their part, so it’s good to be there to encourage them and to reassure them that they’re doing a great job.”

And be sure to catch the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe exclusively in movie theatres starting this November! In Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, the film is written by Gil Kenan & Jason Reitman.

    Rally Point Resources

Early in the game you’ll be concentrating heavily on resource gathering, like Wood, Food, Stone, and Gold. To help you quickly put Villagers to work on collecting these resources, you can pre-determine their assignment before they come running out of your Town Center by utilizing Rally Points on these resources to quickly put them to work.

To do this, select your Town Center and then Right-Click click on a particular resource location (a forest for Wood, animals/Farms for Food, a gold vein for Gold, etc.). Any Villagers produced during this time, with that Rally Point selected, will automatically proceed to gather that resource. Just make sure to update them to another resource location as needed.

    When to Age Up

You can pair this one with the “Rally Point Resources” tip above, but a crucial component of playing Age of Empires IV is knowing how and when to Age Up. Each Age comes with new units and buildings that allow you more strategic options – such as trading Gold and resources with your allies or neutral trading posts via the Market (unlocked in the Feudal Age) or producing Siege Engines and units that will strike fear into the hearts of your enemies from the Siege Workshop (unlocked in the Castle Age).

    Age of Empires IV Screenshot

To Age Up, you’ll need to fulfill a set of resource requirements paired with the construction of Landmark, or in the case of the Abbasid Dynasty, a wing of the House of Wisdom. It’s vitally important to know what’s required to advance your empire, and you can check at any time from the Tech Tree or by selecting a Villager and the “Age icon” from the unit card. Hint: For most civilizations, Food and Gold is vital for getting out of the Dark Age.

    Scout!

Information is knowledge. Knowledge is power. Power is everything. Do not underestimate the power of your Scout. Especially in Skirmish and multiplayer modes where you’re given one for free (free!). It’s incredibly important to utilize this unit in the early phase of the game to get a general lay of the land to find resource locations and determine strategic bottlenecks. Most importantly, while you’ve been building your empire, your opponent’s done the same – utilize your Scout to get a sense of where your opponent is located on the map and what enemy production structures (and armies!) they’re amassing.

    Age of Empires IV Screenshot

Scouts aren’t very powerful and should rarely (if ever) be used to battle enemies in the early phase of the game, but they are fantastic at a herding sheep (an excellent source of Food) to bring back to your Village to help with early Food gathering. And it’s not just the sheep that are nearby. If you can manage to sneak into enemy territory and pluck those herds from your opponent, it’s just one less advantage you’re allowing them in terms of resource gathering in the early going.

    The Power of Counters

Once you’ve spent some time scouting, you may have a better understanding of how your opponent intends to attack you. Whenever possible, aim to create military production buildings that produce units that reliably counter your enemy’s. When you start building out siege and special units and embarking on Naval warfare, you’ll find a range of creative strategies to employ, but when it comes to land units, there are some basic tenets of the rock/paper/scissors mechanic to keep in mind:

    • Archer counters Spearman
    • Spearman counters Cavalry
    • Cavalry counters Archer

There’s loads to learn from there, but this helps visualize the principle Age IV battles are built upon.

    Queue Multiple Buildings

Knowing your counters is one thing and assembling an army that will leave your opponent quaking in their boots is another. Once you’ve built out your economy, you might consider queuing multiple military buildings at once. This will ensure you’re producing units faster, as you build out your forces. We’ve found it’s helpful to grab a single Villager who can plot out multiple Archery Range, Barracks, or Stable placements so you can get started queuing up unit production more rapidly.

    Age of Empires IV Screenshot

Once constructed, Double Left-Click on the same building type (e.g. Barracks, Archery Range, etc.) to select each one of that type, then begin producing units. Also, while both buildings are selected, you can update their Rally Point as needed to either reinforce a chokepoint or head to a staging ground as you prepare for an upcoming battle.

    Group Assignments

By default, many of the Function keys (F1, F2, etc.) on your keyboard can be used to quickly navigate to your building locations in your Village, like Barracks, Archery Ranges, etc. But something we’ve found to be useful is to assign these buildings to a Group so that your camera doesn’t zoom back to your Village. This is especially helpful as you’re multitasking many elements, usually mid-battle, and it’s time to start replenishing your army in real-time.

To do this, Left-Click on the unit-producing structure (also Double Left-Click to select all of that building type), and then press Ctrl+1-9 to assign that structure a group along the number row of your keyboard. Cycling through these grouped structures, you’ll find that you can manage their building queues at any time in your navigation bar without the camera centering back to your Village, away from whatever you were just managing on-screen (troops, scouts, etc).

We hope you enjoyed a few of these tips to help get your army up to speed in Age of Empires IV. #WeAreAllGaming Staffel 1: ArtemizPlayz zeigt, was die Age-Community so besonders macht

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

#WeAreAllGaming Staffel 1: ArtemizPlayz zeigt, was die Age-Community so besonders macht

Was macht Age of Empires so besonders für Dich?

Zusätzlich helfen Hot Keys – also individuelle Tastenkombinationen und Steuerungsbefehle.

Unabhängig davon: Auf welches Feature in Age of Empires 4 freust Du Dich am meisten?

Oh Gott, ganz schwere Frage!

Was war Dein bisher schönster Age-Moment?

A Beautiful World Will Be Yours to Call Home in Slime Rancher 2 in 2022

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

In Slime Rancher 2, Beatrix LeBeau embarks to the mysterious Rainbow Island for an all-new adventure, and Monomi Park took this as an opportunity to find all the ways we could improve the world of Slime Rancher while still retaining the core of what made the original so unique and fun to play.

    Slime Rancher 2 Screenshot

Replacing Beatrix’s dusty ranch is a dazzling, glass conservatory that gives her a panoramic view of Rainbow Island. The Conservatory contains everything you’ll need to get ranching in this new world, including the new comm station where you can talk directly with other characters like Viktor, Ogden, and Mochi, as well as offering a fully kitted-out slime science lab right from the start. And you’ll need it, because in Slime Rancher 2, even vacpack upgrades need to be crafted, including the highly prized extra vac tanks!

    Slime Rancher 2 Screenshot

Speaking of slime science, Slime Rancher 2 introduces a host of new resources to collect, including new materials like prismatic radiant ore. But you won’t need to use extractors on this adventure, because jelly stone, deep brine, strange diamonds, wild honey and more can all be found in the world itself, waiting for you to vac it up. This change really makes exploring the world so much more rewarding.

    Slime Rancher 2 Screenshot

In fact, the whole of Rainbow Island is bursting with little nooks and crannies for you to find new slimes, new resources, treasure pods, and other secrets. We really invested in enriching the experience of exploring the world, and diversifying the environments. In Slime Rancher 2, a single biome may have multiple themes, including the fan-favorite ancient ruins from the original Slime Rancher sprinkled all over the world, offering a wonderful texture of antiquity to this mysterious, prismatic paradise.

There’s a new dawn coming for the world of Slime Rancher and we can’t wait for you and the millions of other ranchers out there to join us in exploring this beautiful new corner of the Far, Far Range that we’ve created, and the avalanche of new slimes that call it home!

Slime Rancher 2 is coming to Xbox Series X|S, Windows 10 PC, and day one with Xbox Game Pass in 2022.

  • GTA III turns 20: Memories from PlayStation Studios and other top developers

GTA III turns 20: Memories from PlayStation Studios and other top developers

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

Where were you when Grand Theft Auto III launched in October 2001? I was standing in a GameStop, perusing the new PS2 releases, when it caught my eye. Following a hearty recommendation from the store manager, I bought the game and took it home. The rest is history.

Twenty years later, it’s virtually impossible to overstate the impact of Rockstar Games’ open-world crime saga on the gaming medium. And it all began with GTA III, a bold shift from top-down action to a fully 3D open world epic, interwoven with unprecedented interactivity. I remember being blown away by Liberty City itself: a sprawling cityscape packed with cars, colorful characters, challenging side-missions, and ever-present cops. I’d never seen anything like it.

GTA III’s launch sent ripple effects across the entire gaming industry, captivating players and inspiring game developers to take a different approach to game design. To mark the groundbreaking game’s big 20-year milestone, we reached out to creators from PlayStation Studios and top third-party developers to reflect on GTA III’s megaton launch.

All screenshots in this article from Grand Theft Auto III — Definitive Edition, out November 11.

“GTA III changed my perspective of what makes games fun. Games had always been about making the jumps, killing the enemies, solving the puzzles – doing the tasks the designer laid out for you. GTA III was the first game where you really made your own fun. That led me to reimagine how exploration and open-ended gadget and weapon usage in Ratchet & Clank could allow players to find their own fun and approach the gameplay in their own creative ways.”

    – Brian Hastings, Head of Creative Strategy, Insomniac Games

“GTAIII was a game with an astonishing degree of freedom, released at a time when we were struggling to make a single-path game within the capabilities of the PS2. I was impressed by the way the game was made. It embraced the realities that come with an open-world concept instead of restricting gameplay to avoid every potential glitch that might come up. The Japanese version of the game was released by Capcom, and I remember thinking, ‘I’m glad I’m on their side’.”

    – Hideaki Itsuno, Director, Capcom

“I grew up playing 2D side scrolling platformers that had a clear path from A to B and could be worked out with a bit of trial and error. The thing that really stood out for me in GTA III was the freedom it gave you to play the way you wanted in a game world that felt believable. Gone were the automatic loading, level-end, and mission-over transitions. You don’t get out of the car… you don’t progress. You seamlessly went from driving, running around the city, and entering buildings to get your next mission objective at the pace that you wanted. In some ways the freedom was overwhelming but the ability to play your way, and in doing so change the tone of the game, was not lost on me. This was likely one of the first major shifts in self-directed play in game design.”

    – Tara Saunders, Studio Head, PlayStation London Studio

“I remember entering the Remedy offices early November, 2001. I was excited, a bit anxious. It was my first day of work. The first thing I saw was a group of people around a TV. Some were laughing, others staring, speechless. They were playing GTA III. It was provocative, unexpected, endlessly fun and impossible to let go of. A tectonic shift in gaming that set the stage for my career – influencing my work to this day.”

    – Mikael Kasurinen, Control Game Director, Remedy

“GTA III showed me the incredible sense of immersion that comes from being able to act freely and see the world react to your actions—that this unique experience is something only games can deliver. And as the expressive power of games has grown over the years, immersion-focused game design has become the standard for AAA titles. GTA III set that standard, and I’m sure it will continue to influence creators for years to come.”

    – Yuya Tokuda, Monster Hunter World Director, Capcom

“I remember finding out about GTA III during our press tour for Syphon Filter 3. There was so much hype surrounding the game that it was impossible for it to live up to, right!? So wrong. I couldn’t believe everything that you could do in that game. Really opened our eyes to what was possible. It is rare when a game comes along that changes your view on an industry. GTA III was that game.”

    – Ron Allen, Game Director, Bend Studio

“GTA III blew my mind as it was such a quantum leap in video game design. It set the bar for living open worlds full of procedural systems that worked together to create an emergent playground of endless possibilities.”

    – Richard Franke, Lead Designer, Media Molecule

“GTA III really blew open my understanding of what a large team can achieve with a strong technical vision. The highly detailed living open world was a huge leap forwards, lots of hand-crafted content all framed by tech constraints needed to stream invisibly to the player. We also saw how physics tech can drive varied brilliant non-linear missions. Layering on the music, the humour and pure freedom put GTA III among the greatest games of all time.”

    – Steve Walker, Technical Director, Firesprite Games

“It wasn’t the sheer scale or the freedom that blew my mind, already had a taste of that with The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Instead, I had a group of three friends and we would spend a lot of time together playing games. And when GTA III came out, we would play that all the time. Thing is: we weren’t doing any story missions or side missions. It was days and weeks and months of messing around in the city, telling ourselves stories, reacting to the living world in chaotic ways, and setting challenges to each other. And the most magical part was that every time there was a visitor beyond that core group, they would get involved naturally, not necessarily playing but commenting, asking the player to try things….This experience opened my eyes to the power of emergent gameplay and stories, seeing games maybe for the first time as a really expressive medium beyond one’s character choice in a fighting game or combo lines in a skating game, and that the stories it created were something that could be enjoyed not just by players, but viewers. [It’s] something that became intertwined with the medium with the rise of gameplay streaming, and more specifically the amazing GTA Online scene, with its role-playing streams this time involving more than one simultaneous player.”

    – Dinga Bakaba, Game Director, Arkane Lyon

“At the time, I had not yet joined Capcom and was pitching a project to an American publisher.

I wanted to make a game that expanded on the Tenchu sandbox, but GTA III went way beyond that.

I remember thinking ‘how did they make this kind of game on PS2?’ Not only from a gameplay point of view, but also from a technical point of view. In response to the subsequent development of open-world games, I decided to do the exact opposite and make a small, narrow, dense horror game, and Resident Evil 7 was born. In a way, Resident Evil 7 may have been born because of GTA III. Thank you and congratulations on the 20th anniversary of GTA III.”

    – Koshi Nakanishi, Director, Capcom

“When I was still young and the concept of an open world was yet to be created, senior developers would often say, ‘If you aim for a game that lets you do anything, you’ll end up with a game that lets you do nothing.’ This was a warning to remind ourselves of the distance between ideal and reality. But when GTA III came out, I remember being shocked by the fact that a game where ‘anything is possible and fun’ had been realized. I don’t need to tell you that it set a new standard for the gaming experience. Another shock I got from GTA was that ‘grand theft auto’ meant ‘car theft’. I’m Japanese, so I thought the name had a more grandiose meaning…”

    – Kazuhiro Tsuchiya, Producer, Capcom

  • Players’ Choice: Vote for October 2021’s best new game

Players’ Choice: Vote for October 2021’s best new game

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Welcome back! We’re live with another Players’ Choice poll as we inch ever-closer to the end of 2021… but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

We’ve got quite the selection this time — I’m torn between a few picks myself, but I dare not skew the results so you’ll just have to guess which ones I’m deliberating over.

Hit the poll below to cast your vote, then head down to the comments to make an argument for your title of choice. Maybe you’ll help me make my final decision! We’ll keep the polls live until Sunday night at 11:59pm Pacific, so make sure you decide before then. See you next week with the winner!

How does it work? At the end of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Soon thereafter, we’ll close the polls, tally your votes, and announce the winner at PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners throughout the year.

What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. Ambitious, larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Demon’s Souls and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will.

How are nominees decided? The PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store editorial teams will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll. Write-in votes will be accepted.
