Xbox Celebrates International Women’s Day

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s an exciting time in entertainment for women – today “Captain Marvel” releases after the success of “Wonder Woman” and later this year we’ll share more about Kait Diaz and her journey in Gears 5. One of my own personal entertainment heroines is Sailor Moon – and lets just talk about that for a second. A sleepy teenager realizes the power within her to transform into a Super Solider of Love and fight the forces of evil. All with a set of space buns, hell yeah! But it’s her message to girls and women, that they too have the power of transformation, that has always connected me to that character. I believe women can transform themselves: a culture, a mindset, an industry, and even the world.

I’ve personally transformed many times over in my own career – I didn’t have a linear path from school to kickass job in the video games industry and was challenged to find my authentic self over and over again. At Xbox, I get to inspire our fans to play and engage with the stories our talented teams are telling, as well as help lead a cultural transformation that is rooted in empathy and understanding that gaming is a place for everyone. Working to change is hard – it’s not always welcome, it comes with fear, a lot of hard work, and real talk. Like Sailor Moon, you lose some battles along the way and need the help of strong allies.

So how are we celebrating International Women’s Day here at Xbox, you might be asking? Well, for starters, we are launching a page on Xbox.com that will highlight some of the amazing women that have helped Xbox become what it is today. We’ll also be celebrating the awesome women who work at Xbox on our social channels. These women are leaders, creators, engineers and teammates who are transforming the future of gaming. We encourage you to join us by using the hashtags #IWD2019 #BalanceForBetter #MakeWhatsNext and #GamingForEveryone.

Over on Mixer, we will be running a Women’s History Month Partner Spotlight on weekends throughout March, as well as launching custom Women’s History Month & International Women’s Day themed stickers and emotes for use across the platform throughout the month. On March 11, we’ll be showcasing a series of LAN party streams on Mixer, each of which will be hosted by a different Xbox executive.

This International Women’s Day, #BalanceforBetter is a call to action for everyone to embrace change and have faith that this transformation will make us the best possible versions of ourselves. Happy International Women’s Day!
