5-Year-Old Boy from China Becomes the World’s Youngest Pilot

He Yide, nicknamed „Duoduo,“ is an extreme 5-year-old, as he’s supposedly flown a plane, reportedly earning himself a world record for youngest pilot ever.

    youngest-pilot

Yide is reporeted to have completed a 35-minute flight at Beijing Wildlife Park in China on Saturday after hours and hours of private flying lessons. According to his father, He Liesheng, it was all Duoduo’s hard work and aircraft know-how: „His first flight was very successful and he wasn’t scared at all.“

Duoduo and his father are no strangers to controversial extreme feats: Eagle Dad has entered the youngster into a yacht-sailing competition; made him run around in the snow in his underwear; and joined with him and Duoduo’s sister to try to climb Mount Fuji in Japan (they had to be rescued because they didn’t take enough supplies).

What a surprise we have here! It seems that the Oculus Rift is not going only to have a 4K version but also a specially designed one for Android devices. The mobile version will be lighter, and will use the connected mobile device’s processor to function.

    icon_xl (3)
This Android compatible version of the headset is intended to be released simultaneously with the PC version, which is expected in 2014. As of now, there are no plans for an iOS version.

    According to Venturebeat:

Virtual reality meets today’s mobile reality.

Oculus VR announced that it’s bringing its virtual-reality headset, the Oculus Rift, to mobile gaming. Chief executive officer Brendan Iribe divulged the surprising move during his keynote chat Tuesday morning at the GamesBeat 2013 video game conference.

The goal is to have the mobile version launch simultaneously — or as close as possible to — when the PC headset launches.

The mobile Rift headset is for Android devices — iOS is problematic, and the company has not mentioned any plans for an iOS-compatible version.

This device will be a lighter, consumer version, and it will use the mobile device’s processor.

“We have some exciting plans on the mobile VR side as the PC VR side,” Iribe said. “We’re really looking at hitting the consumer market. We’re very excited about what we’re seeing. Skeptical about how good mobile VR could be on such a small platform. It’s pretty incredible what [John Carmack has] been able to do.”

ADS is First Amphibious Assault Rifle, Fires 800-Rounds Per Minute Underwater

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

First revealed today at an arms expedition in Moscow, the ADS by the Tula Instrument Design Bureau is the world’s first amphibious assault rifle.

    underwater-assault-rifle

When on land, it fires 5.45х39 mm bullets – the current standard round for Russian assault rifles, but underwater this gun utilizes a slightly shorter bullet, whose range is constrained by the depth of diver when firing.

The underwater rounds, known as the 5.45 x 39 PSP, do feature longer slugs designed to move through water rather than air, but are packed into the standardized casing.

This allows special forces to simply swap out magazines when moving from one environment to another and eliminates the need to carry a second rifle.

The ADS has an effective underwater range of 25 meters and is about as as the AK-74 it is meant to replace.

You read that right, a team of University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins University researchers successfully performed a series of experiments that showed they could send electrical signals directly to the brains of monkeys and that they were able to interpret the signals as touches on different parts of their hands. Plus, „another series of experiments showed rhesus macaques could interpret different direct-to-brain signals as touches of varying pressure.“

    bionic-hand-arm

What this means is that they were able to convert direct-to-brain electrical signals into the sense of touch.

There was one especially cool thing the Chicago-Johns Hopkins team demonstrated.

While it’s impossible to know exactly what the monkeys feel when they get electrical buzzes to their brains, one series of experiments showed the animals were quickly able to interpret electrical brain stimulation as analogues to physical touches.

  • Nvidia introduces G-SYNC technology to erradicate shuttering, tearing and input lag

Nvidia introduces G-SYNC technology to erradicate shuttering, tearing and input lag

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Attention to this news because it could set a milestone in the gaming world. It seems that Nvidia has developed a technology to get rid of shuttering, tearing and input lag phenomenons that mostly of gamers experience while playing. Such technology depends on special modules that synchronizes monitor refresh rates to GPU outputs, as opposed to syncing the GPU to the monitor’s refresh rate. These modules can be installed on a variety of monitors by the end users of come pre-installed when buying.

    icon_xl
    According to official Nvidia Blog:

Enter NVIDIA G-SYNC, which eliminates screen tearing, VSync input lag, and stutter. To achieve this feat, we build a G-SYNC module into monitors, allowing G-SYNC to synchronize the monitor to the output of the GPU, instead of the GPU to the monitor, resulting in a tear-free, faster, smoother experience that redefines gaming..

NVIDIA G-SYNC is so smooth and so fast, that testers have found themselves overshooting and missing targets because of the input and display lag that they have subconsciously accounted for during their many years of gaming. In addition to pro-gaming testers, we demonstrated G-SYNC to industry luminaries like John Carmack, Johan Andersson, Tim Sweeney, and Mark Rein. Mark, co-founder of Epic Games, was so enthused he couldn’t resist a teaser, telling his followers that he “saw the most amazing thing made by @nvidia. No, it’s not a GPU, but gamers will love it.”

Tim Sweeney, creator of Epic’s industry-dominating Unreal Engine, called G-SYNC “the biggest leap forward in gaming monitors since we went from standard definition to high-def.” He added, “If you care about gaming, G-SYNC is going to make a huge difference in the experience.” The legendary John Carmack, architect of id Software’s engine, was similarly excited, saying “Once you play on a G-SYNC capable monitor, you’ll never go back.” Coming from a pioneer of the gaming industry, who’s also a bonafide rocket scientist, that’s high praise indeed.

Beginning later this year, NVIDIA G-SYNC will be available as monitor module you can install yourself, or buy pre-installed in one of the best monitors currently available. Next year, G-SYNC monitors will be available on the shelves of your favorite e-tailers and retailers, in a variety of screen sizes and resolutions, eventually scaling all the way up to 3840×2160 (“4K”).

    The Virtualizer

The Virtualizer is a locomotion device with integrated sensors for motion detection. With this device you can move, run, jump, crouch, strafe in your favourite games. This is the next step to virtual reality. Virtual Sports, Virtual Sight-seeing, Virtual meetings, Virtual Social Networks, Virtual Gaming, Virtual Education and Training,…. there are no limits.

    Virtualizer Proto2neu2 Virtualizer Proto2neu

The Virtualizer enables walking as well as running forwards, backwards and sidewards. This can be done in all directions, because there is no preferred direction at all. Furthermore the device enables you to turn around, to jump and to crouch. In combination with a usual controller of a game console (like Wiimote or Razor-Hydra) and an adequate device for video output (like the Oculus-Rift, which allows 3D output and headtracking) the Virtualizer makes you feel the game in a much more realistic way. Instead of controlling the character on a monitor by keyboard and mouse, you feel like you were in the game because of the natural motion of your body.

The Virtualizer uses the principle of low friction to enable motion. We have created a surface, through carefully selected materials, that allows your feet to effortlessly glide back without being too slippery.

The advantage of this principle is the easy and in relation to existing systems, which use complex systems of conveyor bands or very large hallow spheres, cheap production of the devices. This allows us to offer a well working virtual reality device for a price, which is affordable for as much computer users as possible. We don’t only want the Virtualizer to be seen in Institutes for Informatics, but in the living rooms of this world.

How to create Favorite Instagram Filters in Photoshop

    Reading Time: 10 minutes

With some time and an eye for washed out aesthetics, however, you can use Photoshop to recreate some Instagram filters. We analyzed six filters and took a stab at replicating them in Photoshop, and the results were surprisingly close to the originals.

If you’ve ever wanted to give your crisp DSLR photos a retro feel, take these steps to mimic some of Instagram’s popular filters. The advantage of doing so in Photoshop is that there is also room for creativity, so you can customize your own filters with just a few clicks.

    1. Amaro

    Amaro_composite

    1. First, increase the brightness and contrast of your picture. Do this by going to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast.

    Amaro1

    2. To add a soft yellow light, create a new fill layer over the photo. Go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color. Play around until you find a good shade, or you could just enter the shade I used in the hex color code field: #f4eabd.

    Amaro2

    3. Click OK. While you still have the layer selected, click on the dropdown menu right above it and select „Multiply“ instead of the default of „Normal.“ This will add a soft light over your photo as opposed to an opaque layer.

    4. Next, open up the Levels menu. You can do this with Command / Ctrl + L, or you can go toImage > Adjustments > Levels. In the dropdown menu for „Channel,“ select „Blue.“ Increase the Output Levels at the bottom of the menu from 0 to 117 by dragging the left slider towards the center of the spectrum. This will add a blue tint to the photo.

    Amaro3

    5. From here, I had to make some more minor adjustments by decreasing the Contrast a bit more to give it a faded look.

    Amaro4

    6. Next, open up Color Balance with Command / Ctrl + B, or Image > Adjustments > Color Balance. Make sure the radio dial below is set to „Midtones.“ Play around until you have a good blend of colors, but I chose to increase my Red, Green and Yellow levels.

    Amaro5

    7. Finally, save the image as is and reopen it up in Camera Raw to add a vignette frame. You can do this by exiting out of the current window, then going to File > Open. Select the correct file, then select „Camera Raw“ in the „Format“ dropdown menu.

    8. Once you have the file open in Camera Raw, select the Effects menu on the right-hand side of the editor. Make sure that „Highlight Priority“ is selected in the „Style“ dropdown menu. Move the „Amount“ slider left to make a black vignette around the edges of the photo. Once you’re satisfied with the vignette, move the „Highlights“ slider to the right so that the vignette will not affect the highlights as much. Click „Save Image“ once you’re done.

    Amaro6

    2. Nashville

    Nashville_composite

    1. To mimic the soft purple tint of the Nashville filter, open up the Levels menu with Command / Ctrl + L or Image > Adjustments > Levels. Select „Blue“ in the dropdown menu for „Channel.“ Increase the Output Levels at the bottom of the menu from 0 to 58 by dragging the left slider toward the center of the spectrum.

    Nashville1

    2. To soften the blue tint a bit, add a new layer of light yellow by going to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color. The hex color #f6ddad adds a peachy tone to contrast the blue.

    Nashville2

    3. Next, increase by Brightness and decrease the Contrast by going to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast.

    Nashville3

    4. Change the Color Balance with Command / Ctrl + B, or Image > Adjustments > Color Balance. Increase the Cyan, Green and Blue levels.

    Nashville4

    5. If the color is still not quite right, change the hue with Command / Ctrl + U, or Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. I moved the Hue slider just a bit to the right to emphasize the blue a bit more.

    Nashville5

    6. From here, I went back and adjusted the Color Balance a bit more by moving all sliders just a bit to the right for the final result.

    Nashville6

    3. Sierra

    Sierra_composite

    1. To replicate the faded look of Sierra, adjust the Curves of the photo with Command / Ctrl + M, or Image > Adjustments > Curves. Move the left point of the curve directly up the y-axis.

    Sierra1

    2. Adjust the levels with Command / Ctrl + L, or Image > Adjustments > Levels. Select „Red“ in the „Channel“ dropdown menu and increase the Output Levels to 21 by moving the left slider toward the center.

    Sierra2

    3. Increase the Contrast by going to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast.

    Sierra3

    4. Adjust the channels by going to Image > Adjustments > Channel Mixer. Select „Green“ in the „Output Channel“ dropdown menu and move the Green slider to the right, giving the photo less of a green tint.

    Sierra4

    5. Save the image as is and reopen it in Camera Raw to add a vignette frame. You can do this by exiting out of the current window, then going to File > Open. Select the correct file, then select „Camera Raw“ in the „Format“ dropdown menu.

    5. Finally, adjust the overall Levels of your photo with Command / Ctrl + L or by going to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Keep the „Channel“ dropdown menu selected at „RGB“ and move the middle slider slightly to the right. This will emphasize the shadows of your photo even more.

    5. Brannan

    Brannan_composite

    1. Brannan adds a gritty, dramatic look to your photo, and to replicate this, you need to increase the Contrast of your photo. Do this by going to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. I pushed my Contrast slider all the way to 100, but adjust your photo as you see fit.

    Brannan1

    2. To add to the dramatic effect, adjust your levels with Command / Ctrl + L or by going to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Move the middle slider slightly to the right. This will darken the shadows of your photo.

    Brannan2

    3. To add a warm yellow tint, add a new fill layer. Do this by going to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color. Choose a light, warm beige color, or just use the hex color code I used: #eddd9e. Click OK.

    Brannan3

    4. While you still have the fill color layer selected, select „Multiply“ in the dropdown menu right above it and decrease the Opacity from 100% to 59%.

    Brannan4

    5. Adjust the Curves of your photo to add a faded effect. Do this with Command / Ctrl + M or by going to Image > Adjustments > Curves. Move the left point along the y-axis so the output is close to 45.

    Brannan5

    6. Save the image as is and reopen it in Camera Raw to add a vignette frame. You can do this by exiting out of the current window, then going to File > Open. Select the correct file, then select „Camera Raw“ in the „Format“ dropdown menu.

    7. Once you have the file open in Camera Raw, select the Effects menu on the right-hand side of the editor. Make sure that „Highlight Priority“ is selected in the „Style“ dropdown menu. Move the „Amount“ slider left to make a black vignette around the edges of the photo. Click „Save Image“ to save the final result.

    Brannan6

    8. If you still need to adjust your photo, reopen it up as a JPEG in Photoshop. To further emphasize the faded look of Brannan, go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation to decrease the Saturation slightly by moving the Saturation slider to the left.

    Brannan7

    9. Finally, you can increase the Brightness and Contrast of the photo by going to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast for a final touch.

    Brannan8

    6. Hudson

    Hudson_composite

    1. To replicate Hudson’s blue-toned filter, adjust the Levels of your photo by increasing the Blue Output Levels. Do this with Command / Ctrl + L or by going to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Select „Blue“ in the „Channel“ dropdown menu. Increase the Output Levels by moving the bottom left slider toward the center of the spectrum. Move the left slider of the Input Levels slightly toward the center as well.

    Hudson1

    2. Increase the Brightness and Contrast of the photo by going to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast.

    Hudson2

    3. Adjust the colors with Command / Ctrl + B or by going to Image > Adjustments > Color Balance. Move the sliders to increase the Green and Blue outputs.

    Hudson3

    4. Save the image as is and reopen it in Camera Raw to add a vignette frame. You can do this by exiting out of the current window, then going to File > Open. Select the correct file, then select „Camera Raw“ in the „Format“ dropdown menu.

  • Bound By Flame three new screenshots and Trailer revealed

Bound By Flame three new screenshots and Trailer revealed

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

The bestiary in Bound by Flame has some amazing, impressive and unique creatures that have been created and brought to life by the talented Spiders teams, and the images released today provide a glimpse of what’s in store: here we see the game hero and his companions confronting formidable enemies like the Bone Golem, the general of the armies of the Living Dead and the terrifying Lich.

Bound by Flame uses the combat system designed for Mars War Logs, the previous Spiders RPG where the highly dynamic and tactical approach to the combat proved a real hit with players, but goes further and offers players even greater variety and tactical depth in battles. This has been made possible by the richness and originality of the game bestiary, where every creature has attacks, special skills and, in particular, behavior that is unique to them, forcing the player to adapt his tactics and combat style depending on the composition of the groups of enemies he encounters.

This, combined with the wide range of attacks available to the player, the use of magic and some impressive combat animations (seen recently in the first video teaser), make the battles in Bound by Flame both tactically complex and spectacular.

Video Shows the Aeromobil Flying Car Successfully Take to the Skies

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

Stefan Klein, an automobile designer / engineer from the Slovak Republic, has successfully completed the first flight of his Aeromobil Version 2.5.

    aeromobil-flying-car

About 20-years in the making, this flying car prototype boasts a unique design with folding wings and a propeller in the tail.

The aviation aspects seem to be prominent in the design, with a streamlined cockpit, super light weight, and sleek tail fins in the back.

Propulsion is provided by a 100 hp Rotax 912 water cooled engine mounted behind the seats, with drive shafts leading both aft to the propeller and forward to the two front wheels for driving.

The Aeromobil fits into a standard parking space and can be refueled at the same gas station as all the other cars. The structure is a steel tube frame with a carbon fiber composite shell, a configuration familiar to fans of racing cars.
