Here’s a first look at the futuristic Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision GT supercar, which was designed as a virtual vehicle for Sony’s PS3 Gran Turismo 6 racing simulation at the request of the game’s creator, Kazunori Yamauchi. The 3053-pound supercar is powered by a twin-turbocharged 577hp V8 that generates 590 lb-ft of torque.

Here’s what Autoblog would like to add: „The motorized rear spoiler raises and lowers, the taillights work and the LED grille is fully functional (and reminds us a bit of the Pontiac Firebird’s flashing grille in Knight Rider). But the Gullwing doors weren’t opened, so we can’t comment on their functionality or the interior. We can comment on the „driver,“ however, a dummy sitting in the driver’s seat that resembles the character who drives Gran Turismo’s virtual cars.“

    DualShock 4 (DS4) PlayStation 4 / PS4 Controller Teardown, Details

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Following up on the PlayStation 4 / PS4 Teardown, today frank26080115 has made available a teardown in pictures of the DualShock 4 (DS4) PlayStation 4 / PS4 controller and details below.

    To quote: DualShock 4

    Hardware

    Teardown photo album: imgur.com/a/ytRW5

The USB port and LED are on one separate board, connected using a flat flexible cable, this cable is connected to a vertical FFC connector that does not have a locking mechanism.

The touchpad sensor is also detachable, connected using a flat flexible cable, this cable is connected to the main PCB using a connector that has a flip-up locking mechanism.

The speaker is not removable and it connects to the main PCB using some raised contacts.

    The battery is 3.65V 1000mAH Li-ion.

Main microcontroller is a Spansion MB9BF002, a ARM Cortex M3 core, BGA package. The reset and SWD signals might be exposed to test points, I am not sure.

The Bluetooth module shows „8LA18366“ and „GS-WCM-01“ (or maybe it’s „GS-WCN-01“) and „VR2.0“. There is also a QR code that I can’t decipher yet. There are a lot of test points near it.

There’s a chip marked with „BD9200“ (in QFN 32 pin footprint) that might be a PMIC because it has some thick traces around it, plus a big inductor. One of the pins near it read 6V, might be for the motor.

There’s a shiny small square chip left of the left analog stick, it is marked with „7710“ „325A1“, I have no idea what this is, but there’s some differential signals coming out of it, it might be USB, the activity stops when I disconnect the USB cable. I think this is connected to the USB port. I suspect this is a OTG chip.

There’s a rectangular (maybe LGA) chip on the bottom side on the left, marked with „134“ „A1322“ „333“, possibly a sensor. It’s got some sort of latch signal around it, or maybe it’s a weird clock. It’s slow and doesn’t seem like a bus. Or it could be a shift register and it’s reading blank because I’m not pressing buttons.

There’s a QFN 32 pin chip marked with „WM18016“ (the M could be a N, the 6 could be a G) „36A0LM6“ dead center on the bottom side of the PCB. It has a sine wave logo on it (possibly Wolfson Microelectronics). It is near the audio stuff but it is also near where all the buttons connect. There are 5 test points near it. It appears to be communicating with SPI with constant activity. There’s also two resistors that look like I2C pull-up resistors, and there appears to be constant I2C traffic.

Some buttons are active low, some are active high (maybe only the thumbstick push buttons). The sheet of flexible circuit for the buttons are active low.

Still have a morning ritual of drinking a few cups of Joe? Well, researchers at Mid Sweden University compared the effects of caffeine and blue light on the brain and found them both to have a positive effect. Here’s the kicker, people who were exposed to blue light performed better on tests of brain function that included a distraction.

    blue-light-humans

Here’s what one researcher has to say: „The same distraction, however, proved too much for caffeine users, who performed poorly. Blue light and caffeine demonstrated distinct effects on aspects of psychomotor function. The study builds on research that suggests blue light can improve cognitive abilities such as memory, alertness and reaction time. Although harmless to tissue, blue light is strong enough to trigger biological effects in the body, and it’s being used increasingly for a range of medical treatments.“

You read that right, researchers at the National University of Singapore have created a ‚digital lollipop‘ that utilizes electric currents to transmit virtual tastes straight to your tastebuds. The machine is similar to the fictional Everlasting Gobstopper in which it never runs out, and also the Chewing Gum Meal, which had several different flavors packed into one piece of gum.

All of the four major taste groups – sweet, salty, bitter and sour – can be recreated through a silver electrode which makes contact with the tongue.

Nimesha Ranasinghe, who was the lead researcher on the project, told New Scientist magazine: „We have found noninvasive electrical and thermal stimulation of the tip of the tongue successfully generates the primary taste sensations.“ The Daily Mail would like to add that „the invention is relatively crude at the moment, but there are hopes to make it small enough that users can almost wholly close their mouth while using it.“

For those who don’t already know, Frozen is Disney’s latest computer animated musical fantasy-comedy film that’s loosely inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Snow Queen, it is the 53rd animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. The film’s animators visited an Ice Hotel in Quebec, Canada to study how light reflects and refracts on snow and ice. For the film’s setting, the animators used the landscape of Norway and the feel of the winter season of Wyoming for inspiration.

    f2hKMNo

Peter Del Vecho explained that „the title Frozen came up independently of the title Tangled. It’s because, to us, it represents the movie. Frozen plays on the level of ice and snow but also the frozen relationship, the frozen heart that has to be thawed. We don’t think of comparisons between Tangled and Frozen, though.“ He also mentioned that the film will still retain its original title, The Snow Queen, in some foreign countries: „because that just resonated stronger in some countries than Frozen. Maybe there’s a richness to The Snow Queen in the country’s heritage and they just wanted to emphasize that.

5 Amazing Inventions Created by Geeky Kids and Teens

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Most teens are worrying about prom and making new friends, these five spent all of their free time inventing things, such as a super fast gadget charger, self-driving care, and lots more. We’ve rounded up five amazing inventions created by geeky kids and teens from around the world.

    5. Banana Bioplastic

Sixteen-year-old Turkish student-scientist Elif Bilgin, from Istanbul, spent the last two years experimenting with ways to produce a bioplastic out of used banana peels. Thankfully, all her hard work paid off. She is the winner of the 2013 $50,000 Science in Action award from the Google Science Fair. Elif says that the banana bioplastic could be used for the electrical insulation of cables.

    4. Self-Driving Car

Ionut Budisteanu may look like your normal 19-year-old teen from Istanbul, but unlike the others, he developed a low-cost self-driving car. His autonomous system utilizes webcams to identify objects in its path, paired with a low-resolution 3D radar to find larger items. Best of all, this camera setup only costs $4,000, rather than Google’s $75,000 system.

    3. Super Fast Gadget Charger

A miniature device that can recharge your phone in just 30-seconds won 18-year-old Eesha Khare a major science award that will help fund her college education at Harvard University. She traveled from her California home to Phoenix earlier this year for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, where her invention was honored as one of two winners of Young Scientist Awards.

    2. Thermoelectric Flashlight

Fifteen-year-old Ann Makosinski from Canada designed and built a thermoelectric flashlight that transforms the heat from your hand into a source of energy. In order for the flashlight to be powered by body energy, Ann used Peltier tiles — a device that produces energy when one side is heated and another side is cooled. Apparently, the light can last for about 20 minutes.

    1. R5800 Solar Death Ray

Geeky student Eric Jacqmain created this solar death ray using a normal satellite dish and 5,800 small mirrors. It took only 24-hours to built from start to finish, and purportedly has the intensity of 5,000 suns. Jacqmain says: „I drilled a small hole in the dish and glued a piece of PVC pipe on the back. Light shines through the hole and hits the translucent plastic on the end of the pipe. All I had to do was aim the dish once and mark the spot.“

At first glance, this may look like something straight from a science fiction film or anime, but it’s actually just the Kawasaki J Concept, which was unveiled yesterday at the Tokyo Motor Show 2013. Featuring a snazzy 3-wheel design, it’s capable of shape shifting between a low riding position (Sport Mode) and a higher stance (Comfort Mode). Another oddity is that it doesn’t feature neither a wheel or handlebars, it instead has the rider use two levers for steering.

Nintendo seems to be working on an Android tablet meant to be used primarily for educational purposes.

Nando Monterazo, a Software Engineer at Nintendo of America, shared via Twitter that the company is testing out the device, but it won’t feature traditional Nintendo games and will instead be for educational games only. However, Monterazo did mention that the games would be featuring Nintendo characters.

Here are some of his tweets:

Experimenting with a tablet of Nintendo, the system is based on android, fully modified and unified as a database of the tablet. #Android

At the moment just testing communication environment of educational games that will be shared between the kids using the tablet! #Tablet

Nintendo is testing only the „Android“ but in fact she wants a system written in C/C++ in a Unix environment for the system single tablet!

Many people will be wondering if games „Nes“, „SNES“ or „Game Boy“ the tablet will not have these games, educational games only! #Tablet

It is, a tablet with educational games for children with Nintendo characters….

…now the tablet is primarily focused for schools!! 🙂

Monterazo’s tweets have been deleted since the news broke, but this morning, he tweeted,„Amazing how the internet is dangerous, in my excitement I released information that should not, Now I’m out of the project who liked!“. Oops.

Keep in mind that there’s nothing official yet. A company representative only said that „Nintendo does not comment on rumors or speculation“.

The never scratching Phone, LG’s Flex phone actually heals itself after a key and knife assault

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

LG has spent plenty of time hyping up the curved screen of itsFlex Android smartphone, but it’s unique “self-healing” capabilities looks to be even more useful.

The Flex’s rear is coated with a special material which LG says can heal itself after being scratched. Putting that claim to the test, YouTube tech personality Marques Brownlee took a pair of keys and a very sharp knife to the Flex’s back. The results will surprise you.

    lg_g_flex_self_healing_demo__-_youtube

The Flex mostly cleared up the light scratches from Brownlee’s keys (it didn’t completely remove them, but there’s a definite improvement). It was less effective at surviving a sharp knife cut, he notes that it “half-heals,” but this is (hopefully) a far rarer scenario for phone damage.

Brownlee also tried to “flex” the Flex by putting pressure on the phone’s screen to flatten it. The result? It simply snapped back into place.

It looks like the LG Flex can withstand the typical wear and tear of dropping your phone, having it in your pocket with a pair of keys, and other clumsy scenarios. Eventually, I expect to see similar material make its way to other phones (and hopefully, to your phone’s glass screen).

  • Sigbritt, 75, has world’s fastest broadband

Sigbritt, 75, has world’s fastest broadband

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

A 75 year old woman from Karlstad in central Sweden has been thrust into the IT history books – with the world’s fastest internet connection.

Sigbritt Löthberg’s home has been supplied with a blistering 40 Gigabits per second connection, many thousands of times faster than the average residential link and the first time ever that a home user has experienced such a high speed.

But Sigbritt, who had never had a computer until now, is no ordinary 75 year old. She is the mother of Swedish internet legend Peter Löthberg who, along withKarlstad Stadsnät, the local council’s network arm, has arranged the connection.

„This is more than just a demonstration,“ said network boss Hafsteinn Jonsson.

„As a network owner we’re trying to persuade internet operators to invest in faster connections. And Peter Löthberg wanted to show how you can build a low price, high capacity line over long distances,“ he told The Local.

Sigbritt will now be able to enjoy 1,500 high definition HDTV channels simultaneously. Or, if there is nothing worth watching there, she will be able to download a full high definition DVD in just two seconds.

The secret behind Sigbritt’s ultra-fast connection is a new modulation technique which allows data to be transferred directly between two routers up to 2,000 kilometres apart, with no intermediary transponders.

According to Karlstad Stadsnät the distance is, in theory, unlimited – there is no data loss as long as the fibre is in place.

„I want to show that there are other methods than the old fashioned ways such as copper wires and radio, which lack the possibilities that fibre has,“ said Peter Löthberg, who now works at Cisco.

Cisco contributed to the project but the point, said Hafsteinn Jonsson, is that fibre technology makes such high speed connections technically and commercially viable.

„The most difficult part of the whole project was installing Windows on Sigbritt’s PC,“ said Jonsson.
