  • How Endless Dungeon And Artist Lera Lynn Created The Perfect Space Western Refuge

How Endless Dungeon And Artist Lera Lynn Created The Perfect Space Western Refuge

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

Endless Dungeon launches on Xbox and PC next week, the long-awaited successor to 2014’s Dungeon of the Endless. This tactical, squad-based roguelike takes you on a journey through an abandoned space station, where your team is tasked with protecting a Crystal_bot and escorting it to The Core.

This is no easy task; even the most potent teams require a spot to recharge and respec. Enter The Saloon, the hub where you can take a well-earned breather, change up your loadout, or enjoy a skill-enhancing drink at the bar. This area is drenched in futuristic western vibes, complete with its own live band serving as the soundtrack to your respite.

The music that you’ll hear at The Saloon is composed and performed in-game by Lera Lynn, a Nashville-based singer-songwriter, whose work you may recognize from HBO’s True Detective. Lynn has written music for film and TV, but this is her first foray into video game music. We were lucky enough to sit down with Lynn to learn more about her experience getting into games, and why her particular blend of Americana lends itself perfectly to Endless Dungeon’s intergalactic watering hole.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y08XTwC6giQ?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

Lynn tells us first and foremost that she loves a challenge, and composing for a video game sounded like a particularly fun, if not lengthy one. She shares that her work with Endless Dungeon is five years in the making, and the turnaround is much slower compared to her experience with film and TV. While this is Lynn’s very first experience with video game composition, she describes the partnership with developer Amplitude as “the most organic collaboration I can imagine.”

“The studio reached about to me because they liked my music,” Lynn explains. “They asked if I’d be interested in writing some songs for the game, and we went from there.”

Lynn has composed music that was featured in season two of HBO show True Detective, and she also starred in the show as a recurring live performer in a bar. There are some parallels between this and her role as a cartoon saloon singer in Endless Dungeon, and we were curious about the differences.

“The music plays a different role in the game than it does in film and TV, for example,” Lynn tells us. “I feel like in those, the music is meant to make a scene more emotionally compelling. I think in [Endless Dungeon] it’s more fun, and it’s more interactive, and that’s all new and very different to me.”

Lynn was also given some direction with what the songs should invoke. This ranged from upbeat tracks signifying a call-to-action, and a sentimental ballad about missing home.

“When I’m writing for myself, I could write about a million things,” she adds. “Having that direction actually makes it easier.”

Lynn doesn’t just provide the music for the Endless Dungeon saloon – the avatar that sings the tracks is modelled after her real face. The character went through a few interactions, including an ethereal floating octopus without a mouth – though Lynn felt that singing might be quite problematic with that concept. In the end, it felt right to have the character look like Lynn with a spacey outfit twist, but not without her signature on-stage beret.

“I asked initially whether I should be writing from my perspective, or I should put on a different character, and they wanted me to do my thing,” she says. “With that, I was able to bring a lot of myself to the game. We’ve created an interesting juxtaposition with my style combined with the sounds from the game, which is really interesting.”

However, you won’t see Lynn’s character straight away. The live band will appear more prominently as you progress through Endless Dungeon

“When you initially get to the saloon, there’s just the guitar player playing the guitar parts of a song,” she explains. “And as you reach higher levels, you can unlock other musicians that are playing the songs. Once you’ve made it to a higher level then I will appear, and you’ll hear the singing. Hopefully, that’s a payoff for the player.”

Lynn doesn’t consider herself to be a gamer just yet, but she’s on her way, and hopes that her work with Amplitude will serve as a gateway into what she describes as a “whole new universe.” She’s also incredibly thrilled to add a video game project to her portfolio, and hopes that it can serve as inspiration to those wanting to get involved in the space.

“It’s great to be enlisted as a female producer and composer in video games,” she says. “I think that’s a good thing for the world. There’s also no limit to the creativity here, there’s no limit to what people can imagine and then make, and I just want to be involved with more of it.”

Endless Dungeon launches October 19, and is available to purchase on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

    ENDLESS™ Dungeon

    Amplitude STUDIOS

ENDLESS™ Dungeon is a unique blend of roguelite, tactical action, and tower defense set in the award-winning ENDLESS™ Universe. Plunge into an abandoned space station alone or with friends in co-op, recruit a team of shipwrecked heroes, and protect your crystal against never-ending waves of monsters… or die trying, get reloaded, and try again. WE GOT TURRETS AND WE GOT GUNS You’re stranded on an abandoned space station chock-full of monsters and mysteries. To get out you’ll have to reach The Core, but you can’t do that without your crystal bot. That scuttling critter is your key to surviving the procedurally generated rooms of this space ruin. Sadly, it’s also a fragile soul, and every monster in the place wants a piece of it. You’re going to have to think quick, plan well, place your turrets, and then… fireworks! Bugs, bots and blobs will stop at nothing to turn you and that crystal into dust and debris. With a large choice of weapons and turrets, the right gear will be the difference between life and death. RIDE SOLO OR GIDDY UP WITH FRIENDS You can face the horrors of the Station riding solo, or squad up and run the gauntlet in 3 player co-op. Once you’ve got your posse, plan your moves. Pick their weapons from a wide choice ranging from flamethrowers to poison snipers. When you’re set, enter the Station to take on a character’s quest, take a stab at escaping, or just go loco on the locals. You’ll likely die trying, but hey, that’s the way it goes in this space dungeon! ASSEMBLE YOUR RECKLESS SQUAD Prepare to meet a cast of colorful heroes all gunning for the same goal: to get the hell out! Each brings their own cards to the table. There’s tanky Bunker who’ll soak up damage, fiery Blaze who loves to blow stuff up, or maybe Shroom who’ll heal her squadmates with her „unusual“ incense. Select your heroes to build the team that works for you. As you get to know them, you’ll learn that they all have their own particular motivations and secrets… MONSTERS, DANGERS, SECRETS AND TREASURES, OH MY! Escaping means overcoming all the dangers of the Station. Yup, all of them. Deadly robots, merciless monsters, loot, and giant beasts await you at every corner. The deeper you delve into this scrap heap, the more you’ll discover its tragic history. Why does the Station reel in any ship that flies too close? Why do you come back every time you kick the bucket? No matter how familiar you are with the ENDLESS™ Universe, the Station has more stories to tell. THE MORE DYIN‘, THE MORE GROWIN‘ Hate to break it to you, this won’t be easy and you might die… a lot. But that’s okay, because every time you do, you get reloaded back into the Saloon. Think of it as your center of operations (and beverages), where you can upgrade your heroes and weapons, unlock new paths to The Core, chat with the locals, listen to tunes, and drink boosting (and delicious) libations. Then, jump back into the Station and try to get out — again.

Colin Kaepernick Talks Wild Card Football – Launching Today

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hey everyone–Colin Kaepernick here, and I’m excited to share with you a bit about my involvement in the creation of Saber’s new Wild Card Football game. What I love most about this game is that it brings together the best of arcade-style gameplay and strategic football, making it a lot of fun  for seasoned fans like me, but also for people who’ve been introduced to the sport more recently. From the moment I got involved with the project I knew this was something special, and I think you’ll feel the same way!

    Why Wild Card Football?

The answer’s simple: I love the game of football, and I love being part of any effort to get more people interested in it. Wild Card Football brings a fresh twist to the sport we all know and love. From the style to  the game’s unique blend of strategy and its arcade feel–Wild Card is awesome.  It’s not just about replicating the traditional football experience; it’s about taking the game to new heights and making it accessible and fun for everyone.

    Wild Card Football Screenshot

    My Role in the Game

My journey with Wild Card Football has been an incredible experience. I’ve had the honor of consulting on gameplay mechanics and providing general game feedback to ensure that it captures the essence of football while adding that signature Playgrounds Sports flair. It’s been a collaborative effort to create a game that is not only exciting but also authentic to the spirit of football.

    Favorite Plays and Power-Ups

One of the things I love most about the game is that players are able  to pull off some ridiculous jaw-dropping plays that you won’t see on any regular football field. We’ve taken the concept of power-ups to a whole new level here, allowing you to call down UFOs, become a human rocket, grow to a colossal stature or even freeze the defense. There are hundreds of wild cards in the deck you can use to change the game’s momentum in a heartbeat. You’ll need to think strategically about when to deploy your power-ups since they cost energy. Do you use your game-changing ability early or do you save it for a critical moment? The choice is yours.

    Wild Card Football Screenshot

    A Blend of Styles

Wild Card Football is a celebration of both the arcade-style football games we grew up loving and the innovation that Playgrounds Sports brings to the table. The game captures the essence of the sport while adding a playful twist that sets it apart from the rest. Whether you’re a fan of traditional football uniforms or you prefer the outlandish outfits inspired by different eras, there’s something for everyone.

  • Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Blasts Onto Xbox Today, With Some Major Improvements

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Blasts Onto Xbox Today, With Some Major Improvements

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

The biggest change heading to Darktide is the brand-new class system. Each of the four archetypes – Veteran, Zealot, Psyker and Ogryn – will now come with their own talent tree brimming with new skills and abilities. This affords much more versatility in how to build and play each starting character.

“A really big thing that we’ve been trying to do since launch is give more agency to the player,” explains Victor Magnuson, Design Director on Darktide. “We felt that the system we had before was a little too rigid, and didn’t really allow players to come up with their own playstyle. Now, players can pick and mix what they want to do, and we’re really looking forward to seeing all of the different combinations.”

When creating a character, players can choose unique traits, such as their starting planet, their upbringing, and some defining moments of their lives. The new class system provides more opportunities to lean into those backstory choices and almost roleplay your character in this vast universe.

“An Inquisitorial Warband is made up of very different characters,” explains Darktide Chief Creative Officer Anders De Geer. “We want people to be able to create their own version of that fantasy. Anything you read in a book or play in the tabletop game, you’ll be able to come closer to creating in Darktide.”

  • High On Life’s DLC Is Out Today – Let’s Talk About Horror!

High On Life’s DLC Is Out Today – Let’s Talk About Horror!

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

Hi, I’m Alec Robbins, head writer on Squanch Games’ High On Life and its High On Knife DLC (out today!) It’s kind of like a mini-sequel that bridges between the base game and whatever else we do next. It’s not entirely an epilogue, but we like to think of it as a bonus episode. It’s not entirely a horror experience, but it definitely leans into the genre in ways that we didn’t fully explore with High On Life. So let’s talk about horror!

I have some aversions to horror movies and I almost never seek them out – but my partner loves them so I do watch them all the time. My background is in comedy, and I always talk about how comedy and horror are exactly the same to me, just with different context. If you’re building comedy, or you’re building horror, you’re doing the exact same labor. The whole concept of trying to create a setup that flows into a punchline that surprises people and makes them laugh – that’s identical to the structure and horror; you’re trying to set up some tension that you then release, but instead of a punchline, it’s a scare.

    High on Knife Screenshot

The first half of the High On Knife DLC is goofy, where you’re exploring this bright place called Peroxis. You’re there because Knifey (one of High On Life’s talking weapons) got a missed-package slip, and he convinces you to travel there to pick it up yourself. You visit this place called Salt Lick City, which is populated by a bunch of slug-like aliens. It’s packed with side missions and funny moments and weird things to explore. And then that kind of leads into the stark change halfway through the DLC where you’re suddenly in what we describe internally as a haunted shipping warehouse, Muxxalon, which was absolutely not inspired by any real-life companies. We made things darker and added a flashlight, which are obviously slam-dunk horror tropes.

Even though horror and comedy are similar, writing those specific horror moments was tricky for me at first because I come from comedy. I have faith in which jokes are gonna land, but I was initially worried about the horror. In both cases, you really can’t tell for sure until it’s built up enough that you can actually play through it when the voice acting is in and see if it’s timed correctly. That’s when you can really tell if it’s gonna get a laugh. But there was horror stuff where the lighting wasn’t in yet and the sound design wasn’t quite there so sometimes we couldn’t tell if it was going to be scary until much later in the process. So I feel like horror was actually the harder thing for us to get right this time around. But that’s pretty natural because we’ve clearly perfected the art of comedy.

    High on Knife Screenshot

In High On Life, we have characters that are constantly making quips and that can kind of ruin the vibe of horror. We actually have this entire section where the player is first introduced to the Muxxalon warehouse, full of dialogue and jokes. But after playing through it, we ended up taking out all the dialogue there just to make it feel a little scarier. With the dialogue it just didn’t feel scary. It wasn’t working. If the characters are talking and making jokes then they’re not scared so why should I be scared as a player? That first intro area in the second half of the DLC was the biggest test for us because we had to make the really tough call to pull back. Even one out-of-place line would ruin that moment.

I like it when comedy turns into horror and vice versa, where it’s hard to separate them. My premise for Muxxalon and how it operates is essentially “What if your boss was always over your shoulder? What if they were literally attached to your shoulder?” What if instead of like, just having a boss in an office who comes by and walks the floor… they’re a parasite attached to your shoulder telling you to get back to work. It’s absurd and funny but also? Maybe a little horrifying in practice? Maybe?

    High on Knife Screenshot

A lot of the natural scares came out of those basic ideas, and they were really brought to life by Gabourey Sidibe, who plays the boss of this operation, Mux. She was really funny, but she could get REALLY menacing. So it’s the reality of like, what if your boss was this evil glob that has taken over every square inch of this facility and could appear at any moment from any wall? It’s the ultimate surveillance.

But High On Knife is super funny, even with those horrific elements. I’m a huge fan of Ken Marino, and he plays your parasite. And we did so much with him. There’s a whole branching path, almost dating-sim part of the game, where most players are gonna go through it one way, but there’s like, probably five or six completely different routes you can take through this. And the recording session for that alone was like a full session. There’s so much more to talk about, but I only have so much space. It’s funny and spooky, and I’m really proud of our team at Squanch and what we were able to accomplish with the DLC.

High On Life’s High On Knife DLC is now available for $14.99 on PC and Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The base game is available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers, and we also have an exclusive Xbox Game Pass Bundle, which includes both High On Life and High On Knife for $19.99.

  • What’s New from Capcom on Xbox? Tokyo Game Show 2023 Roundup Report

What’s New from Capcom on Xbox? Tokyo Game Show 2023 Roundup Report

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

Exciting looks at eagerly anticipated Xbox games from Capcom took center stage at Tokyo Game Show 2023. Check out a rundown of the highlights below!

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Swoops in with New Gameplay Details

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Director Hideaki Itsuno shared new gameplay details for the highly anticipated action-RPG, with an emphasis on combat and the dense new world players will immerse themselves in.

The vocations you choose determine the playstyle of you and your AI-controlled Pawns. Director Itsuno shared a look at the four starting vocations that you can choose from at the start of the game, as well as two additional vocations.

Cut down enemies and protect your party as a Fighter. This vocation focuses on melee combat, utilizing a one-handed sword and shield for an equal balance of offense and defense. It’s a great all-around vocation and fits well with most party compositions.

Rain down arrows from a distance using a bow and arrow as the Archer. This vocation is best suited to take down enemies above you, such as the many harpies that roam the skies. Take advantage of different arrows in your arsenal like exploding or blighting arrows to best your foes.

Strike swiftly with dual daggers as a Thief. Taking advantage of this vocation’s agility and choosing your openings is key. Stay aware of the enemy’s attack and use the Thief’s Swift Step ability to quickly dash away from enemies after an attack.

Cast powerful attack, healing, and support magick as a Mage. Summon powerful spells from above or cast an enchantment to strengthen your allies to get the edge in battle. More advanced magick will have longer incantations, so you’ll need to stay safe when casting powerful magick.

The Mystic Spearhand vocation wields the double-edged Duospear combined with unique magick attacks. Twirl your spear to hit multiple foes and use your magick to throw items or block an enemy’s movement. This new vocation is a great all-rounder that can adapt to any situation.

The fan favorite Magick Archer, delivers magick arrows that can devastate opponents and heal and support allies. One powerful and risky skill allows you to sacrifice your health to unleash a powerful attack over a wide area. No risk, no reward!

Choose the vocations of your party to best suit your needs and triumph over the many foes that await. You’ll be able to change your vocation at a Vocation Guild, so feel free to experiment! The full game will feature more unique vocations, so we hope you look forward to seeing them.

Director Itsuno also introduced some of the details that will be part of your journey in this world. Two nations reside in this world: Vermund, the kingdom of humanity, and Battahl, the land of the beastren. Vermund is a land ruled by the Arisen for generations, full of lush green meadows and rolling hills. Batthal is an area full of rugged canyons and the new beastren race calls home.

Why not ride an oxcart instead of hoofing it on foot? Hop onboard and take a quick rest to make it to your destination quickly. You can be attacked during your travels though, so stay ready!

Pitch black nights are another key series element returning in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Some highly dangerous monsters only appear during nighttime. Being cautious and prepared when traveling at night is key to survival, but waiting until morning is a sound strategy. Head to a campsite and use a camping kit to rest until the next morning and recover your health.

Environments can also play a key role in combat. For instance, breaking a dam to unleash a rush of water onto your enemies can completely change an encounter. Facing enemies like the Cyclops in canyon areas with the right combination of vocations in your party could topple over to create a makeshift bridge. Plenty of emergent gameplay situations like this await in your adventures ahead.

All of this is just a small slice of what you can expect in Dragon’s Dogma 2, and we can’t wait to share more in the future!

The Wargames Evolve in Exoprimal’s Next Update

Thanks to every Exofighter who joined the wargames on Xbox and Windows! Exoprimal’s dinosaur action continues to evolve with Title Update 2, coming to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows on October 18!

Ocean Platform is a new map coming to the wargames! Full of narrow scaffolding and with an emphasis on verticality, this offshore oil plant will challenge you to use your exosuit’s skills and rigs efficiently to navigate across the map while holding off dinosaur swarms.

Also included in Title Update 2 is Escape, a new final mission where you’ll team up with the opposing squad in an intense ten-player cooperative mission. Work together to secure and defend points on the map as quickly as possible to improve your odds of survival, then make a final rush to escape while fighting off overwhelming hordes of dinosaurs and neosaurs – dinos that have been altered in strange ways on their trip through time – to either escape as a team, or to be flagged for mortal sunset.

Title Update 2 will add two new rigs – suit attachments that can be swapped out at any time during gameplay – to the mix: the Drone rig and the Edge Strike rig. • Hotel Barcelona Interview: Swery and Suda’s Collaboration Is a Horror Action Game with a Time Looping Twist

Hotel Barcelona Interview: Swery and Suda’s Collaboration Is a Horror Action Game with a Time Looping Twist

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

During the Xbox Digital Broadcast at Tokyo Game Show 2023, White Owls’ iconic Swery (Deadly Premonition, D4: Dark Dreams Dont Die), and Goichi Suda of Grasshopper Manufacture (Lollipop Chainsaw, Shadows of the Damned), announced details of the upcoming Hotel Barcelona, a brainchild of the two creators.

The title and genre of this game were already out in public, unexpectedly announced at an event four years ago – but the fact that two popular game creators with a huge following were planning to work together attracted the most attention. My personal fantasy was of a dual-personality agent protagonist wielding a beam katana, and my expectations for the game only grew.

In the last four years, we’ve heard very little more, and as those years passed by without any announcement, I almost gave up and wondered if the game really was in development.

The fact that we got not only got confirmation of Hotel Barcelona’s development through this year’s Xbox Digital Broadcast, but a gameplay reveal and an appearance from the two creators has brought back the feeling of anticipation and hype; we had to hear more about it. Xbox Wire immediately contacted Swery to hear more about the long awaited game.

To lay out the groundwork, can you tell us how the project for Hotel Barcelona launched?

Swery: It all started when I was a guest at a talk event hosted by Suda-san called “Travis Monday Nitro 2”, which was held in Shibuya, Tokyo in October 2019. At the event, we talked about creating a game like this together. At that time, we also announced the title: Hotel Barcelona. It initially was merely a vocal agreement between the two of us, where we just said “Let’s collaborate!” without much thought put into it. We weren’t sure if we were really going to commit or not.

But shortly after that, I got together with Suda-san again, now at an event in Canada at the end of October 2019. There, Suda-san gave me his firm commitment, mentioning he’d like to “pursue that opportunity seriously”. We worked out the plan and details in one fell swoop over dinner, together in Canada.

Was the framework of the game created then?

Swery: We had already announced back at the event that we wanted to make a horror themed, side-scrolling action game with the title Hotel Barcelona, so we started discussing ideas while keeping that in mind. We came up with the idea of taking in concepts and creating the atmosphere you would find in horror movies, while the protagonist would delightfully defeat serial killers from across the United States. And all of that would happen in a place called Hotel Barcelona. The general framework was decided on right during that time, and I worked with Suda-san to put it all together into a proposal.

As far as I can tell from the trailer, there seems to be an abundance of weapons.

Swery: The melee items, such as an enlarged surgical knife, are your main weapon, and the long-range items, such as a shotgun or Molotov cocktail, are your subweapon. You will go on missions equipped with each of these weapon types. Weapons are basically obtained from treasure chests that drop during missions. There are, of course, differences in appearance and performance.

Hotel Barcelona, the place where all the action takes place, is an integrated leisure complex, featuring facilities such as a casino and camping ground around the hotel to create a single, living world with seven smaller worlds inside.

Due to the fact that Suda-san and I are making the game, the worlds each have some twisted tricks, and each of them has a serial killer boss. The objective of the game is to somehow defeat the boss, and clear the seven worlds.

You mentioned that the boss characters are inspired by movie characters, but do you have a character in mind for each boss?

Swery: The bosses are not a tribute to any single character. They’re more like an embodiment of a subgenre of horror films. For example, there are many subgenres of horror, such as slasher movies, zombie horror, summer camps, babysitters, and so on. We came up with the idea of our bosses through the tropes that each subgenre has built up over their time.

Tell us more about the Slasher Phantom, which seems to be one of the game’s main pillars.

Swery: The Slasher Phantom was of my personal ideas to incorporate into future action games. This was brought into Hotel Barcelona because I thought it would be a great match.

Simply put, the player’s past character will move as it did in the last run automatically, while still retaining all hitboxes. Something close to this would be the ghost feature in racing games, but with hit detection; it will feel like you are fighting with your past self. You can hold up to three Slasher Phantoms, which will help your adventure in each level.

You might then think, “If I have three Slasher Phantoms with me all the time, all the levels will be a piece of cake”. I assure you it is not that easy.

Each of the seven worlds consists of several areas to be cleared, and the boss appears in the last area. When you clear an area, you can choose a power-up, which may restore your health or increase your attack power. However, if you get hit and are sent back to the beginning of the area, you may find it appealing to chose a different route than the previous one, say to increase your attack power. When you do so and choose a different route, the Slasher Phantoms will reset completely.

As you get used to the game, you will gradually be able to beat the bosses without the assistance of Slasher Phantoms. We are making adjustments with the goal that you will find yourself getting better at the game itself, as the player gains experience.

    Concept art for Hotel Barcelona

─Where did the idea for the Slasher Phantom come from?

Swery: While there are many death loop games that make you start over from the beginning when you are hit and downed, I have always wanted to make an action game that would embed the looping into its “action” aspect well. My thinking was to focus on carrying the action itself into the next loop, not the items and EXP. The result was an idea of looping the actions of your past play alongside the current player character.

From what I’ve seen during tests, the less good you are at action games, the more the player will value the Slasher Phantom. I had the impression that these players were really struggling in situations where they had to decide between recovering health and keeping their Slasher Phantoms.

Hotel Barcelona is being developed by the team that worked on The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories, and at the start of development, I told them that Hotel Barcelona was a side-scrolling, battle action game, and didn’t discuss anything about the Slasher Phantom system. Since the team had experience developing side-scrolling games but not combat-focused action games, my first goal was to make sure we had a good feel for the game. When it began taking shape, I then asked the team to add the Slasher Phantom system in.

I found the visuals to be very intriguing. What were some particular points you took great care with?

Swery: We started with the difficult task of incorporating the best of both worlds, which would mean figuring out what makes both our games iconic from a visual perspective. First of all, as a common characteristic, we identified that we both like to create games with animated expressions. So, at first, we tried to use the art style of D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die with the inclusion of shaders that created abstraction. However, the characters were too small to be expressed well through this art style, so we decided to use ray tracing and added glistening effects, but this time, the frame rates became unstable. In the end, we mixed the colors and atmosphere of Japanese animation along with the expression of shadows in a typical ’80s Hollywood horror movie to create what we have now. We make an effort to keep the frame rate at a steady 60FPS, especially because it was an action game, and also at the same time, had to develop an art style that people had never seen before.

Speaking of animations, that transition when entering the boss fight looked very interesting.

Swery: We asked animation artist Saho Nanjo (who has recently created music videos for popular anime and artists) to create them. Cool hand-drawn animations will be played when each boss appears, so please look forward to them as well.

You’ve mentioned that Hotel Barcelona’s launch is in 2024, but when do you envision it becoming available?

Swery: The framework of the game is ready and the amount of content is also comfortably ready. 2024 is definitely the year, but the true game-making process begins here… Speaking of action games, it all comes down the balance of the gameplay. It really depends on how long it takes to get that right.

Lastly, please give a few words to the users who are looking forward to Hotel Barcelona.

Swery: First of all, thank you all for your interest in Hotel Barcelona. This game is a collaboration between two creators, myself and Goichi Suda. Although it may look like something out of the ordinary, we have created a challenging and rewarding action game together. The game is being developed by White Owls with the team who created The Missing, and we are proud to present it to you. Please look forward to playing it.

Get ready for one of the most exciting and stylish action RPGs of the year: Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest Adventure of Dai arrives on Xbox Series X|S and PC next week!

This new game presents a fresh take on the legendary Dragon Quest series, with exciting action-based gameplay and anime-infused visuals that capture the kinetic style of the beloved manga and TV series it’s based on. Take a look at the trailer and you’ll see what we mean.

Ahead of the game’s launch, we thought we’d tell you a little about the game to give you a preview of what to expect and share some information direct from the game’s Producer Takumi Kasai!

But first, we should probably address a question some of you have.

What is Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai?

Many of you may already be familiar with Dai and his friends from the acclaimed anime TV series and long-running manga. However, for some of you, this may be your first introduction to Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai. I have to imagine many have never had the pleasure.

The good news is that no prior knowledge is needed to enjoy the game. It follows the story of the anime series, so you’ll be introduced to the world and its characters naturally over the course of the adventure. You’ll learn to love Dai, Popp, Maam and the gang just as fans did through the series.

That said, we’re sure many of you are curious about the franchise, so allow us to provide a brief introduction.

In 1989, writer Riku Sanjo and illustrator Koji Inada launched a new manga in Japan: Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. Inspired by the popular videogame series, it told the ongoing tale of a young man – the titular Dai – who dreams of growing up to become a hero.

The story ran until 1996 over 37 volumes, and among the best-selling and most highly regarded manga series of all time. It also inspired the acclaimed anime series of the same name in the 1990s, and a remake which started in 2020.

Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai adapts the first 41 episodes of this new series for the game, charting his rise from humble beginnings to a true hero.

Ask the Producer: Why make Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai into a game?

Takumi Kasai: The project was originally started to go along with the start of the new animated series.

While a new anime series for ‘The Adventure of Dai’ was to be adapted, this story had never been made into a console game before. Since it bears the name Dragon Quest, Square Enix felt that a game adaptation was in order, so we initiated the game project at the same time as the anime.

We’re very pleased to have been able to adapt this fascinating work into a game and present it to the world!

So, what do you do in the game?

Your first port of call will be Story Mode. As the name implies, this is where you’ll experience the narrative, an adventure that takes you through multiple, varied stages. You’ll explore areas full of classic Dragon Quest monsters, take bosses on in epic one-on-one battles and more.

Every playable character has their own playstyle, able to deal out unique combos and special skills. Some like Dai, for example, are all about getting in close and taking enemies apart with powerful sword techniques.

Others, like Popp, specialize in magic, and are able to take on enemies at a distance with flashy ice and fire attacks. Meanwhile Maam can provide both melee and long distance attacks as well as healing support.

The variety of characters and abilities means there’s an incredible depth to combat, especially when you factor in more advanced skills like parries and perfect dodges. It looks great too, with incredible effects and animations that directly reference the anime. It all makes for combat that feel incredibly exciting to engage in.

As you play, you’ll also collect accessories known as Bond Memories. Not only do these augment the stats of the character you equip them to, they also unlock scenes from the original manga for you to enjoy!

    The Temple of Recollection

If you want to take a break from the story, experiment with different characters or just make your heroes stronger, you should head to the Temple of Recollection.

This ever-evolving, repeatable dungeon changes every time you play it. As you take on each dangerous floor, you’ll earn valuable rewards, including some enticingly powerful Bond Memories that can make your heroes even tougher.

The deeper you delve into the dungeon, the more dangerous it becomes… but the greater the rewards become too. Of course, you can only keep your prizes if you exit the dungeon, which you can do every five floors. You’ll have to decide whether to leave when given the chance, or gamble it all on what may lie ahead.

It’s classic risk/reward, and it makes for one heck of a compelling loop!

Ask the Producer: How did you approach production of this new game?

Takumi Kasai: Since there was an existing anime and manga for Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai, I felt that the most important thing was to create a game that has the utmost respect for the source material.

To that end, I was not only responsible for supervising the production, but also thinking about what would really make the fans happy. I thought it was very important to create a game that would please those existing fans.

But we also wanted to attract new fans too. We have prepared plenty of exhilarating action and challenging dungeons, so we hope that people who are not familiar with the anime will play this game and get to know the world of ‘The Adventure of Dai’!

Ask the Producer: How does the game differ to the anime and manga series?

Takumi Kasai: Since the original Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai has a very well-thought-out narrative, it wasn’t very challenging to make the game story follow the original narrative.

However, because the story is so seamless, there were parts of the game where the storytelling became overly long. So, with the approval of the original author, we altered the story in these parts to keep a good pacing for the game.

We also adjusted the way we present the story to make the experience unique to the game – such as using voice dialogue during battle to progress the narrative and incorporating a storyline before we switch to the battle phase.

It was challenging, but we’re hopeful that this part of the game will be accepted by fans. If you’re new to the series and want to know more about the world of Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai, we hope it inspires you to see the new anime!
