Sports are all about moments. No one knows that better than Major League Baseball (MLB). The way we, the fans, absorb those moments are changing all the time. We’ve gone from peering over fences, relaying what we’ve seen to friends and family to huddling around the radio, to television, collectively sharing our amazement and disbelief. In the 21st century, though, digital mediums reign supreme as fans connect with the game through apps, streaming, and social media. And now, there’s another medium making its way to the baseball experience lexicon: virtual reality.

    MLB Home Run Derby 2018

A moonshot in MLB Home Run Derby VR.

Last year at MLB All-Star Week in Washington, D.C., VIVE Pro presented a unique VR video game experience in a whole new way as MLB held its first-ever Virtual Reality Home Run Derby Tournament championship competition. More than 300,000 people in attendance and millions through Facebook, YouTube, and Twitch livestreams watched fans of all ages step up to the plate and swing for the fences in MLB Home Run Derby VR.

Needless to say, and forgive the pun, it was a big hit.

But the 2018 Home Run Derby VR Competition was just the beginning. For the 2019 season, MLB worked with clubs to bring Home Run Derby VR on VIVE Pro to select ballparks across North America so fans can immerse themselves in this all-star VR experience while watching their favorite team.

VIVE Pro Eye Precision Eye Tracking

VIVE Pro Eye’s precision eye tracking make VR experiences more intuitive for fans.

Now, MLB continues to take its virtual reality game to new heights with VIVE’s latest product: VIVE Pro Eye. Rolling out later this year and beyond, this next-generation system will enable fans to immerse themselves further in Home Run Derby VR by enabling a more accessible and more intuitive simulation.

Whereas other virtual reality systems fall back on familiar game controls and mechanics, VIVE Pro Eye’s integrated eye tracking allows people to navigate Home Run Derby VR through sight alone. Eye tracking follows and analyzes where users are looking, enabling gaze-oriented menu navigation and hands-free pointing, zooming, and selection.

What does that mean for fans? No more complicated menus. No more ham-fisted VR controllers. Just a streamlined user interface and a more fluid user experience where fans can get right to swinging with less roadblocks and frustration—an incredible first access point for users intimidated by, uncomfortable with, or simply unsure of VR.

Play Home Run Derby VR on VIVE Pro as part of this year’s All-Star Week in Cleveland at PLAY BALL PARK or on any of your visits to the following ballparks across North America:

    Arizona Diamondbacks – Chase Field
    Atlanta Braves – SunTrust Park
Boston Red Sox – Fenway Park
Chicago White Sox – Guaranteed Rate Field
Cincinnati Reds – Great American Ball Park
    Cleveland Indians – Progressive Field
Houston Astros – Minute Maid Park
    Miami Marlins – Marlins Park
    Minnesota Twins – Target Field
    Pittsburgh Pirates – PNC Park
Philadelphia Phillies – Citizens Bank Park
San Diego Padres – Petco Park
San Francisco Giants – Oracle Park
St. Louis Cardinals – Busch Stadium
Toronto Blue Jays – Rogers Centre

  • VR workouts for the mind and body!

VR workouts for the mind and body!

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The New Year is always a time of renewal, and for many of us it’s a time to resolve to do better, whether that’s with our bodies or in our minds. Naturally, there are VR apps for that!

From today until Wednesday, January 24th we’re offering some fantastic VR apps at 50% off that will help you in mind, body and perhaps even soul. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s on offer:

    Virtual Sports

Take on tennis and play some ping-pong with Virtual Sports, which includes two ball-batting games to keep you on the move. With AI opponents who’ll show you no mercy and the ability to play multiplayer matches, this is one exercise routine that’s anything but.

    Racket Fury: Table Tennis VR

In the future, wars will be decided by robots. And table tennis. Yes, after a two-millennia war it’s only natural that the peace will be maintained by a table tennis competition called the Division of Steel! Eye-opening plot aside Racket Fury is a different take on table tennis, with hi-res visuals and extremely shiny robots to compete against. You’ll also be able to enhance your robotic avatar after every successful match, allowing you to compete at the upper echelons of artificial table tennis!

    Dash Dash Run!

Ever played an ‘endless runner’? Ever wanted to be in one? To some that might sound like a special form of torture, but one thing cannot be denied: if you’re running in Dash Dash Run, you’ll be working up a sweat. That’s because in this frenetic racing game you have to pump your arms (with your controllers in hand) to make your avatar run. The faster you pump, the faster you run… if you’re old-school enough to remember 80s arcade classics such as Track & Field, you probably get the idea already. At least in VR, you won’t need to mash buttons to get yourself moving (or insert quarters to continue). This time though you’ll need to dodge around articles, grab coins and run as fast as you can if you’re going to top the global leaderboard.

    Nature Treks VR

While getting out into nature is always a good thing, there are times when you just can’t make it happen – and of course, many times when you can, but nature doesn’t cooperate. Experience some breathtaking scenes, interact with animals and best of all, literally create the world around you. Nature Treks VR is a lot more than just a walkabout; it’ll activate your creativity while also relieving your stress.

    Nirvana

If you’re looking to meditate, putting on a Vive headset might not be a bad start – no visuals to distract, no noises to get in. To enhance that experience you might want to try Nirvana, which places you in a virtual meditation temple where, surrounded by symbols of the divine, you can try to focus and block out the rest of the world.

    Guided Meditation VR

While Nirvana looks to harmony in simplicity, Guided Meditation VR (as the title suggests) will steer you towards enlightenment with a strong helping hand. Designed to help anyone begin their meditation practice or improve a current one, Guided Meditation includes 19 environments, over 300 meditation spots and over 15 hours of helpful meditation material. If you’re looking for a vacation from the everyday, you’ll find one here.

Whatever VR apps you choose to try, we wish you a happy, healthy and fulfilled year ahead!

  • VIVE Tracker Bundles Up In Time For The Holidays

VIVE Tracker Bundles Up In Time For The Holidays

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

It’s been a great year for Vive Tracker and we’re consistently impressed by the way the developer community has integrated Tracker into their experiences, prototypes and arcades. From MarioKart VR, to full body tracking, to the first VR keyboard, Vive Tracker enables new types of VR projects quickly and affordably.

But that’s just for developers and businesses. Starting today, we’ve got our first line of Tracker peripherals and accessories for Vive users at home.

The first Vive Tracker accessory bundles are available for pre-order today with expected arrival dates of mid-December (just in time for the holidays).

    • Hyper Blaster with Duck Season
    • Racket Sports Set with Virtual Sports

A third partner bundle featuring straps to enable full body tracking, is available for purchase today.

    • Rebuff Reality’s TrackStrap with Redfoot Bluefoot Dancing

Note, the Rebuff bundle does not ship with a Vive Tracker so you’ll need to order directly from Vive.com

    Hyper Blaster

The Hyper Blaster brings a retro light gun to VR for the first time. When paired with Vive Tracker, the Hyper Blaster serves as both a gun and motion controller in integrated games such as Duck Season, Arizona Sunshine, The American Dream VR, Operation Warcade, TacticalAR, and Practisim VR. The Hyper Blaster will be sold exclusively through Amazon and includes Duck Season as a pack-in title, and one Vive Tracker, all for $149.99. Duck Season, by Stress Level Zero, is a throwback to the golden age of 1980’s gaming and movies with a hint of horror in a Spielburgian universe. Unique to Duck Season, the Blaster is virtually represented within the game world.

In addition to the six titles integrated at launch, Vive is working with 10 additional developers to integrate the Blaster by Q1.

    Racket Sports Set

Custom-molded and weighted to feel like real paddles and rackets, the Racket Sports Set is packaged for both Ping Pong and Tennis games.  Connected via a simple screw, the handles are integrated with five titles. The set will sell for $149.99 and includes both Ping Pong and Tennis handles, a Vive Tracker and a pack-in redemption code for Virtual Sports.  Pre-orders are available today via Amazon, Abt Electronics, BH Photo, Fry’s, Gamestop, Micro Center and NewEgg with additional retailers expected.

In addition to Virtual Sports, the Racket Sports Set is integrated with four titles today and expect an additional six by end of year.

    TrackStrap

The Vive Tracker takes SteamVR tracking to another level of accuracy, easily adding feet, wrist, hip or leg tracking movement to VR experiences.

Rebuff Reality is selling TrackStrap, which easily attaches Vive Trackers to your feet and other body parts to enable full body tracking. A pair of TrackStraps is available now for $24.99 via rebuffreality.com and includes a pack-in redemption code for Redfoot Bluefoot Dancing on Steam, inspired by Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) and Audioshield.

Dozens of developers have integrated body tracking into their experiences, including CloudGate Studios’ Island 359, which today launched a “Virtual Self” update that uses Vive Trackers for full body tracking and movement.

Additional compatible titles include Climbey, Holodance, High Fidelity and more.
