How Capcom designed Kimberly and Juri for Street Fighter 6

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Fresh off the streets of Evo 2022, two more characters have been announced for Street Fighter 6, the next evolution of the Street Fighter franchise, launching in 2023. Juri returns with her playfully sadistic ways along with new ninja Kimberly! We sat down with Game Director Takayuki Nakayama to ask him how Kimberly and Juri were designed along with quick bios for the duo.

How Capcom designed Kimberly and Juri for Street Fighter 6

    A new era is here

Bust out some beats and shake up your spray cans to welcome the newest ninja to Street Fighter 6. Kimberly invited herself to become Guy’s student, who is the 39th Successor to Bushinryu after defeating his master Zeku, the 38th Successor. Kimberly had an ordinary upbringing, but she’s a prodigy who graduated college early and now wants to be a full-fledged ninja. She is infatuated with ’80s pop culture when the portable cassette player was at its peak popularity, hence why she always carries one with her.

Takayuki Nakayama: In terms of Kimberly’s design, we aimed to create an outfit suitable for her speedy and acrobatic movements since she excels in sports like track-and-field and cheerleading. Pair her brightly colored gi with sneakers suitable for moving around quickly, and you have Bushinryu-like ninja attire, don’t you think? We tried to make her hairstyle and outfit beautifully showcase her striking silhouette since she is an expert at running and airborne attacks. The spray can and portable cassette player on her waist are also used for special moves.

The music she listens to originates from a certain person, but you will have to wait for the story to find out who that is. Let’s see how Kimberly, the Ninja + Pop Star = Ninja Star, performs.

According to Nakayama, Kimberly’s arsenal of techniques make use of her high physical strength and allows her to open up opponents in various ways. Being a spunky new ninja, Kimberly incorporates an urban twist to reimagine what Bushinryu means to her. She uses Genius at Play to stock up on a spray can, which can then be thrown to the ground as a Shuriken Bomb. During Hidden Variable, Kimberly conceals herself in colorful smoke before instantly appearing in front of an opponent for a surprise attack. Finally, she has the trademark ninja Sprint, which can be followed up with kick options or Arc Step where Kimberly launches herself off from the opponent.

    Something wicked is coming

First appearing in Super Street Fighter IV, Juri remains a sadistic thrillseeker who enjoys the suffering of others, taking immense joy in obliterating her foes. Previously, her main motivator was revenge against M. Bison, but since his fall in Street Fighter V, she now whittles away her time in a gloomy haze. What lies in store for her now?

Takayuki Nakayama: For Juri, this costume retains the image from her Super Street Fighter IV one, but has been rearranged to fit the Street Fighter 6 aesthetic. There is also a change in the hairstyle, which I think gives it extra personality.

Underneath her jacket, black tape that imitates the appearance of a spider covers her body. The colors of her Feng Shui Engine are purple, black, and white, and accented with emerald green. Also, please pay attention to her helmet, as you may have seen in the trailer when she appears on her motorcycle, since it matches her design. Her smart phone also reflects her personality and style, don’t you think?

Fans of Juri will be wickedly pleased to know she retains many of her past moves with different properties now. Fuhajin returns where Juri performs an upwards kick and stores Fuha stocks upon completion. Saihasho, Ankensatsu, and Go Ohsatsu are newly named special moves, but may be visually familiar in the form of the low projectile or jumping axe kick. While these can now be performed without having to expend Fuha stocks, they can be chained together and powered up if a Fuha stock is available.

Finally, Juri’s Shiku-sen, a flying dive kick, returns from Super Street Fighter IV, which can be followed up with a series of flashy airborne kicks. This opens up more creative options for Juri’s playstyle and can catch an opponent off guard.

    Here come two new commentators

If you missed it, Street Fighter 6 has a new Real Time Commentary Feature where notable names in the fighting game community lend their voices to commentate your matches. Previously, Vicious and Aru were revealed to be the first two Play-by-Play Commentators back in June. Now, we can confirm two more legendary commentators.

How Capcom designed Kimberly and Juri for Street Fighter 6

First, we want to go into more detail on the Real Time Commentary Feature. In tournaments, there are usually two commentators working in tandem: the Play-by-Play Commentator, who specializes in describing the action with articulate and rapid delivery, and the Color Commentator, who gives further insight and analysis into the match. We mirror this concept in Street Fighter 6 where you can select both a Play-by-Play Commentator and a Color Commentator in the settings!

Joining Vicious and Aru as a Play-by-Play Commentator is Tasty Steve, who brings his trademark energy, charisma, and hype to his performance. Our first Color Commentator reveal is no other than the fighting game historian, James Chen. We’re honored to have these two legends be a part of Street Fighter 6 history and can’t wait for you to hear them in-game. We’ll reveal more voices in the future!

This completes our Evo 2022 announcements. We’re excited to have Kimberly and Juri bring their unique personalities to the character roster while James Chen and Tasty Steve lend their voices to Street Fighter 6. We’ll see you later in the year for our next reveals! Any guesses?

  • Relive Darkstalkers history in Capcom Fighting Collection, out June 24

Relive Darkstalkers history in Capcom Fighting Collection, out June 24

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Vampires, robots, fighters, oh my! Capcom Fighting Collection brings together 10 head-to-head arcade classics to PlayStation with extra features and online play for all games with rollback netcode!

With Capcom Fighting Collection, we aim to offer you new ways to experience some of our beloved fighting games. For some of you, it might be your first chance to play titles like Red Earth or Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness. Others will take pride in dominating online rankings of the classic Hyper Street Fighter II or even the more lighthearted Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo.

That’s five games out of 10 so far… so what are the other five? Darkstalkers! That’s right–this will be our most comprehensive Darkstalkers compilation yet, featuring two titles previously exclusive to Japan.

Ready to relive Darkstalkers history? If you’re a longtime fan, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane and remember what got this series its classic status. And if you’re new to Darkstalkers, let me give you a taste of what makes this magical fighting game series so special.

    The world of Darkstalkers

While Street Fighter is a bit closer to home, the Darkstalkers series invites you to explore much darker themes. Your adventures will be centered around impending doom, ranging from protecting Earth from a fiery alien to facing off a demon lord in a conjured dimension.

These outlandish scenarios come with a variety of eye-catching backdrops. One time, you’ll be fighting in a dark alley in England while the next battle might be in a vast Egyptian desert. And of course, the epic showdown against the aforementioned demon lord will take place in his very own demon realm.

    The characters of Darkstalkers

At this point, it should be no surprise the cast of Darkstalkers comes in all sorts of shapes, sizes and species. You may have even seen the succubus Morrigan Aensland and the vampire Demitri Maximoff making appearances in other Capcom games. Besides these two, you can expect to clash swords with the accursed samurai Bishamon, wrestle with the bigfoot Sasquatch, get tied up with the mummy Anakaris, and fight/play as a variety of esoteric characters inspired by classic monsters and folklore.

Naturally (or supernaturally), each character boasts unique powers and abilities. Without getting into gameplay specifics just yet, I recommend taking the time to play around with each warrior if only to marvel at the flashy animations that come with each special move. Whether it’s the subtle transformations of Donovan Baine’s sword, Rikuo dynamically stretching its skin or B. B. Hood using her explosive arsenal with reckless abandon, each animation was made with special care to look stylish and add to the frantic pace of the fights.

    The gameplay of Darkstalkers

Since we’re dialing everything up to 11 anyway, of course the gameplay has to be wild too! The fights in Darkstalkers also take things up a notch or two thanks to the combo systems and the characters’ fast-paced movement options. Some warriors can dash quickly around the stage, while others have multiple jumps or even the ability to run in the air. This added mobility combined with wild special moves makes each match as chaotic and frenetic as ever.

And that’s not all! In the later games, the Rounds in each match are handled in a way to make everything feel fast and high-stakes. Instead of both warriors’ position and health bar resetting to their original states, the match almost never stops. As soon as Round 1 is over, the downed fighter will get up on their feet, right where they fell, with a full health bar and ready to rock. The victor of the previous Round will not regenerate their health, though… which can add a lot of pressure to both fighters.

    Two Darkstalkers debut outside Japan

One bit of Darkstalkers history that had been previously exclusive to Japan now finally makes its way to the rest of the world with Capcom Fighting Collection. The original three Darkstalkers games are now joined by two arcade variations making their western debut (in their original Japanese versions). Here’s what the collection looks like now:

    • Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors
    • Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge
    • Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire
    • Vampire Hunter 2: Darkstalkers’ Revenge
    • Vampire Savior 2: The Lord of Vampire

The latter two games, Vampire Hunter 2 and Vampire Savior 2, are both derived from Vampire Savior. They all share the same frantic Round system explained above, but with slightly different rosters. Give them a try if you want to mix things up!

We’re excited to bring these arcade classics to western players. All 10 games will have online play powered by a robust rollback netcode. In addition, we’ve also added a training mode to nearly all games –except for Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo–, and a massive collection of art and music to explore!

Capcom Fighting Collection will be available on PS4 for $39.99 on June 24. A digital bundle including Capcom Fighting Collection and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection will also be available at launch for $59.99.

  • Brawlhalla x Street Fighter collaboration adds Ryu, Chun-Li, and Akuma

Brawlhalla x Street Fighter collaboration adds Ryu, Chun-Li, and Akuma

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

Brawlhalla and Street Fighter collide today in one of the free-to-play platform-fighter’s biggest crossovers yet. Ryu, Chun-Li, and Akuma are joining Brawlhalla’s cast as Epic Crossovers during a special event, and they’re bringing their best moves – including Ryu’s Hadoken and Chun-Li’s Spinning Bird Kick – to the battle. The event also adds a new game mode: Street Brawl, which adds health bars for one-on-one Street Fighter-style fights. Players can fight in a new map based on Suzaku Castle (Ryu’s classic stage), or get their hands on a Podium patterned after Kapukon Yu (E. Honda’s stage), as well as snagging a new Street Fighter-style K.O. Effect, an Emote based on Akuma’s Satsui no Hado victory pose, and avatars featuring Zangief, the Shadaloo emblem, a Hadoken, and an animated quarter-circle punch.

Brawlhalla x Street Fighter collaboration adds Ryu, Chun-Li, and Akuma

Of course, crossovers like this don’t just happen – they’re the result of careful planning and collaboration between companies, as well as deep affection and respect for a franchise that Brawlhalla’s developers grew up with. To find out more about how it all came together, we spoke with Josh Kenneth, international product manager at Brawlhalla developer Blue Mammoth Games.

How did this crossover begin? Was it something fans were clamoring for?

Josh Kenneth: Like every Crossover we do, it started because we love the property and its characters. For this one, we thought, “we grew up with Street Fighter, and it’s awesome. Can we do a Crossover with them?” Fans also have a lot of Crossovers that they want in Brawlhalla. It’s usually that person’s favorite IP x Brawlhalla, and we started seeing a lot of Street Fighter suggestions. Brawlhalla’s a fighting game, so it makes sense that fans would want us to crossover with another fighting game. It’s a great fit.

While Brawlhalla and Street Fighter are both fighting games, they have very different gameplay styles – Brawlhalla lets you take on multiple opponents at once and is more focused on free-form combat, whereas Street Fighter focuses on 1v1 matches and features set combos. Why does it make sense to bring them together?

Kenneth: This Brawlhalla x Street Fighter Crossover is our first Crossover with another fighting game. We’ve made leaps to crossovers with TV franchises, like Adventure Time, TMNT, and WWE, and to other video game genres, like Rayman, Shovel Knight, and Tomb Raider. So, while it makes fighting-game sense to bring them together, all the differences in the styles are also what makes it so fun. We were able to bridge a gap between traditional 2D fighters and platform fighters with this Crossover, and it’s awesome.

    Epic Crossover for Petra
Ryu is always trying to find the next strongest opponent to better himself. Many of his iconic techniques have been brought over to Brawlhalla, like the Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, Shoryuken, and Hadoken.

Street Fighter characters have a familiar feel and fighting rhythms; what was it like adapting these characters to Brawlhalla? What made Petra, Wu Shang, and Val the right characters for these Epic Crossovers?

Kenneth: We knew we wanted to have the most iconic attacks for each character. For Ryu, for example, that meant the Hadoken, Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, and the Shoryuken. Petra, Wu Shang, and Val had all the right weapons and attack styles to fit these Street Fighter characters and their iconic attacks. Once we had those attacks in the game, everything just fell into place. It felt so right so quickly! Chun-Li has her Spinning Bird Kick, Akuma has his Zanku Hadoken – it’s all there.

In Brawlhalla, each character has two weapon types. What are the Street Fighter characters armed with?

Kenneth: Each of the two Weapons the character uses changes their fighting style, so we used this opportunity to split the iconic attacks up between the weapons. Ryu uses Gauntlets and Orb, with the Orb based on the fighter’s willpower (like a Hadoken). Chun-Li uses Spear and Gauntlets, so she uses her spear to balance while she kicks. Akuma uses Sword and Gauntlets, with the sword being based on his exclamations about obliteration and annihilation. Basically, he’s going to use this thing to annihilate everything, as he likes to do.

    Epic Crossover for Wu Shang
The Strongest Woman in the World is sure to teach her opponents a thing or two about how to take a kick. She brings techniques of her own into Brawlhalla, like the Spinning Bird Kick and Kikosho.

What was the process like of working with Capcom for this crossover? Were they involved in tuning the characters, for example?

Kenneth: Capcom was awesome to work with. Their team had creative input and final decision-making on how the Street Fighter characters looked in Brawlhalla. We would bring our ideas and expertise on how Brawlhalla looks and works, and they would give ideas on what to fit in, and how it all looked. The whole lot of them were really nice and fun to collaborate with!

What can you tell us about the new Street Brawl mode?

Kenneth: Imagine taking the Legends, movement, and weapon system of Brawlhalla, then putting the rules of Street Fighter around it all. Health bars, best of three, small 1v1 – it is so much fun. There are also walls and a ceiling on the map to really bring the combat in close. I “tested” it a whole lot during development just to play it as much as I could; also to give feedback, of course, but any chance I could get to play it, I was taking that chance!

Ryu, Chun-Li, and Akuma are arguably the three most iconic characters in the Street Fighter franchise. Were any others on the table at one point?

Kenneth: Oh, of course. Street Fighter has dozens of iconic characters, like Zangief, Dhalsim, M. Bison, Sakura; the list goes on. We’d be hard-pressed not to fit Zangief somewhere in this crossover, so we got him in as an Avatar; he’s easily one of my favorite Street Fighter characters, and we know how much of a fan favorite he is. We really did our best to fit as much fan-favorite (and our favorite) Street Fighter stuff in this crossover as we could.

    Epic Crossover for Val
Focused on defeating the gods, the Master of the Fist is ready to make them truly tremble to pieces. He’ll achieve ultimate power with his Tatsumaki Zankukyaku and Zanku Hadoken techniques, among a few others..

How does the art team translate characters into the Brawlhalla art style and still maintain their identity?

Kenneth: I can’t sing the praises of the Brawlhalla art team enough. Every single one of them is incredible. Since they are well-versed in the signature Brawlhalla art style and are always huge fans of the crossover characters we bring into the game, they have a great foundation to start from. That means they can identify the most important aspects of the characters’ designs and bring that into the Brawlhalla style. They also work closely with our partners, like Capcom, to make sure that everything translates over nicely, and that each character feels just right. Honestly, I’m certain the art team could fit any character to ever exist into Brawlhalla somehow.

What is it about Suzaku Castle that made it the clear choice for the map? Did you consider any other classic Street Fighter locations?

Kenneth: There were so many options, like Battle Harbor and the Casino, but Suzaku Castle just screams “Welcome to Street Fighter!” whenever you see it. It’s Ryu’s stage in the Street Fighter games, so it just felt right. We did also like the bathhouse stage, Kapukon Yu, from Street Fighter II, so we made that into a Podium – which is another example of fitting awesome Street Fighter stuff in where we could! Like Zangief, we just couldn’t have a Street Fighter Crossover without it. Which also means E. Honda is here in spirit. We hope everyone enjoys the Brawlhalla x Street Fighter Crossover as much as we enjoyed making it!

Street Brawl mode is available to play now in Brawlhalla on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 (via backwards compatibility), and Ryu, Chun-Li, and Akuma are available for purchase as Epic Crossovers. All Street Fighter content will be purchasable and playable after the event ends.

Street Fighter V Sommer-Update 2021: Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Street Fighter V Summer UpdateStreet Fighter V Summer Update

August auszuprobieren! Seht euch Oro in Aktion an:

Akiras V-Trigger I ist “Otoko No Senaka”.

Street Fighter V Summer UpdateStreet Fighter V Summer Update

August dazu kommt! Seht euch Akira in Aktion in dieser exklusiven Aufnahme an:

Street Fighter V Summer Update 2021: Past, present, and future

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

It’s hard to believe that just a year ago, we held our first online digital event with the SFV Summer Update in 2020. One year and several seasonal updates later, we’re back with today’s SFV Summer Update 2021! Check out the full video here:

Street Fighter V Summer Update 2021: Past, present, and future

Let’s dive into what was covered, including info on returning SFIII series character Oro, SF newcomer Akira, the reveal of the final character for Season 5 of SFV, and more!

Oro returns from the SFIII Series

Street Fighter III’s wandering hermit is back in SFV and is ready to teach these youngins a lesson in fighting. Oro’s playstyle has always given him a variety of options and his SFV iteration is no different.

    V-System

Oro’s V-Skill I is called “Onibi,”which summons a bouncing orb projectile that can bounce at three different trajectories.

Oro’s V-Skill II is “Minomushi,” that has Oro executing a short hop that has two different follow-up attacks: “Kaki Otoshi,” an overhead attack or “Eda Uchi,” a safer on block kick.

Street Fighter V Summer UpdateStreet Fighter V Summer Update

Oro’s V-Trigger I is called “Manrikitan,” which gives Oro access to his command grabs called “Kishinriki” and “Kishin Kuchu Jigoku Guruma” and can be performed on the ground and in the air, respectively.

Oro’s “Tengu Stone” returns as his V-Trigger II where Oro summons three objects that can be used to make combos possible that weren’t before.

If you hold Down while activating V-Trigger II, “Tengu Midare Stone” will activate instead and produce five objects. This makes combos even more powerful but will drain the V-Gauge faster.

With his turtle buddy in tow, Oro is back in SFV with classic moves as well as some new tricks up his robe. We hope you’re all excited to try out Oro when he releases on August 16!

Let’s check out Oro in action!

Street Fighter V Summer Update 2021: Past, present, and future

Akira Kazama makes her debut in Street Fighter V

Hailing back from the fighting game series Rival Schools, Akira Kazama makes her Street Fighter debut in SFV! Her playstyle excels best up close and personal.

    Special Moves

“Kiko Kai” is a short ranged blast of energy that comes from Akira’s hands. The EX version has a longer range and comes out much faster.

“Urarimon” is a fast, forward-moving elbow strike. This move allows Akira to close in space and deal good damage and is best used as a combo ender.

Her “Senshubu” kick has low, medium, and high variations to hit at all angles and has a follow up kick after.

    Akira’s V-System

Akira’s V-Skill I “Kiko Rensei,” enhances her “Kiko Kai” by adding more hits and damage to the attack.

Her V-Skill II is called “Tsutenda,” where Akira will launch her opponents into the air allowing for follow up attacks. These airborne combos are called “Air Bursts.”

Akira’s V-Trigger I is “Otoko No Senaka.” Akira’s brother Daigo drops down from the sky and strikes the opponent, then explodes with a burst of energy!

Street Fighter V Summer UpdateStreet Fighter V Summer Update

Her V-Trigger II is “Haten no Kamae,” which puts Akira in a special stance where she can execute three different follow-up attacks.

Each follow up attack has unique attributes and you can cancel the stance and go for a throw instead! Use this V-Trigger to extend your combos or open up opponents with frame traps and mixups.

Akira has studied up and is set to make waves in SFV when she releases on August 16! Let’s check out Akira in action with this exclusive match footage:

  • Diese 10 Multiplayer-Charaktere sollte jeder kennen

Diese 10 Multiplayer-Charaktere sollte jeder kennen

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

    Sackboy: Little Big Planet

    Crash Bandicoot: Crash Bandicoot Racing

  • Gamified boxing with Pi Fighter

    Gamified boxing with Pi Fighter

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Gamifying boxing with a special punchbag that allows you to fight Luke Skywalker? Rob Zwetsloot starts a training montage to check it out.

    Not Rob

    Street Fighter

Did you know that the original version of Street Fighter had a variant where you could punch the buttons to get Ryu to attack? The harder you smacked the kick button, the more damage it would do. These apparently wore out very quickly, which is why watching Street Fighter tournaments these days is akin to watching someone playing the piano. Albeit with six buttons and a joystick.

What if you could bring this back? And combine it with other arcade classics and staples? Meet Richard Kirby’s Pi Fighter.

    A new challenger!

“Pi Fighter is essentially a real-world old-school fighting video game,” Richard tells us. “The player chooses an opponent and challenges them to a sparring match. Each player has a certain number of health points that decrement each time the other player lands an attack. Instead of clicking a joystick or mouse button, the player hits a heavy bag. The strength of the hit is measured by an accelerometer. [A Raspberry] Pi translates the acceleration of the heavy bag (measured in G) into the number of health points to decrement from the opponent. [Raspberry] Pi runs your opponent, which attacks you — you don’t actually get hit, but your health points decrement each time they attack.”

Use a heavy bag to get a good workout and a good idea of your punch strength, Rocky IV style

It’s a remarkably simple idea, and it started off as just an app that used a smartphone’s accelerometer. Translating that to a Raspberry Pi is just a case of adding an accelerometer of its own.

    3… 2… 1… Fight!

“I realised it could be used to measure the overall strength of a punch, but it was hard to know how that would translate into an actual punch, hence the idea to use a heavy bag,” Richard explains. “This appealed to me as I studied karate and always enjoyed hitting a heavy bag. It is always difficult to gauge your own strength, so I thought it would be useful to actually measure the force. The project ended up consuming a good amount of time, as you would expect when you are learning.”

    Finish them?

While Pi Fighter is already used at events, Richard says “[i]t needs a bit of tuning and coding to get everything right […]. It could be a never-ending project for me. You can always fix things and make the software more robust, the user interface more usable, etc. It isn’t mass-rollout ready, but I have never had it fail at a key moment such as presenting at a Raspberry Jam or Raspberry Pint. It (mostly) gets better every time I put some effort into it.”

If you find yourself at Raspberry Pint in London, make sure to do a bit of a warm-up first — you might find yourself head-to-head in a boxing match with a Jedi. Here’s hoping they don’t know Teräs Käsi.

The initial Street Fighter V purchase will be the only one that consumers need to make to ensure they always have the most up to date version of the title. A cinematic story expansion will be released in June 2016 as a free update and over the course of 2016 (and beyond) further gameplay content, costumes, new challenges and balance system updates will continually be made available to all players. For the first time in Street Fighter history, all of the post launch gameplay content can be earnable completely free of charge through completing various in-game challenges and receiving earned in-game currency, called Fight Money. For those who just can’t wait to unlock each piece of new content, content can also be obtained instantly using purchased in-game currency, called Zenny.

The first of the 2016 content updates will come in March, when the in-game store opens and adds a new World Warrior to the roster – Alex. Players who have played through the majority of the single player content at launch will have earned enough in-game Fight Money to be able to add Alex to their Street Fighter V rosters for no additional cost.
