Sega celebrates Puyo Day and Puyo Puyo’s 30th Anniversary with new content for Puyo Puyo Tetris 2

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hello, friends! We have a lot to celebrate today. Not only are we observing Puyo Day (because in Japanese, 2-4 sounds like “Pu-Yo!”), and a brand-new update to Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, which we’ll get to in just a moment, but we are also celebrating the 30th anniversary of the entire Puyo Puyo series!

That’s right, fellow old-timers like myself, Puyo Puyo was first released way back in the ancient era of 1991. Since then, the series has had a rich history of appearing on a wide variety of platforms, including every single PlayStation console. Fans may have spotted the series in our other titles, like Yakuza and Judgment, as one of the playable arcade machines.

Over the past couple of PlayStation generations, Sega has also brought full Puyo Puyo series games to Western audiences through Puyo Puyo Tetris and Puyo Puyo Champions.  Then just last month, we brought Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players!

It’s been a long journey to this point, and we’re not slowing down. As part of our Puyo Day celebrations, we’re proud to announce that the second in our series of free post-launch updates for Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is now available!

Today’s update ushers in a variety of fresh content for players, including four new playable characters – Serilly, Rafisol, Possessed Klug, and Yu & Rei; 3 new background music tracks for players to enjoy as they play, (revisiting some of Puyo Puyo’s past hits); 20 new avatars for players to customize their in-game profiles with; and Color vision accessibility settings that include adjustments for color saturation that can be toggled on or off at any time. Additionally, all six Challenge modes that were previously only available offline in single-player mode can now also be enjoyed online with up to three of your friends/foes!

As we did last month, we’d like to provide a short introduction to each of those new characters I mentioned, along with what they bring to the table for the game’s Skill Battle mode where you’ll use unique character skills and special Item Cards to defeat your opponents.

Serilly is a timid mermaid who is kind of a crybaby. She has highly effective buff and debuff skills in her arsenal. While she did appear as a playable character in Puyo Puyo Champions, this update marks her debut in the Puyo Puyo Tetris series!

Next is Rafisol, a mysterious being from an unknown world hiding a hideous power with the ability to, among others, change the shape of the Tetrimino in your possession. Those who may have been following along last year would know that Rafisol was added as a secret unlockable character in Puyo Puyo Champions just two days before we announced Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, so this feels particularly special.

Yu & Rei are ghostly twins with a chilling degree of pun and trivia knowledge who have a skill that removes up to 32 pieces of incoming Garbage Puyos, which can prove critical in a pinch. Although Yu appeared in Puyo Pop Fever as a playable character, her twin brother, Rei, makes his first appearance in the West.

Finally, we have Possessed Klug, an evil crimson spirit that has taken over Klug’s body, with a powerful skill that can set up a powerful T-Spin attack. In my opinion, this is an especially notable addition to the character roster because this marks the first time that Possessed Klug has been made playable in a Puyo Puyo game outside of Japan. Moreover, he hasn’t been playable since the Japan-only Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary game, so something tells me Puyo Puyo fans will be excited about this one!

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is available right now on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 both physically and at PlayStation Store. Be sure to download this latest free update to enjoy all the amazing content we’ve added to the game. In case you missed it, we also added Sonic the Hedgehog as a playable guest character and a new online Boss Raid mode, which you can read about in our previous blog post. Lastly, make sure to follow the official Puyo Puyo accounts on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for all the latest!

  • 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim — new release date and interview

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim — new release date and interview

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim now releases on September 22, and will arrive on PS4 with English Voiceover as part of Day 1 patch. This Vanillaware sci-fi adventure is a beloved title here at SEGA of America, and well worth the wait!

Today I’m joined by a member of our localization team, Allie Doyon, who handled the voice recording for 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. She’s been in the booth for a while and has all the behind-the-scenes info.

Ari Advincula: 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim has been winning a ton of awards in Japan. It’s even up for nomination for the Seiun Sci-fi awards, as the only video game nominated!

Can you give us a quick intro of what 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is about?

Allie Doyon: Sure! Honestly, this game is so unique that a straightforward explanation of the premise wouldn’t do it justice. I could sit here for hours pouring my heart out about it, but that’s part of what makes it so fun to experience for yourself. If I had to condense it down to a few themes, I guess I would say it’s a surprisingly heartfelt mystery across time, space, and human lives. You’ve got the love letter to sci-fi — giant robots, giant monsters (kaiju), suspicious men in black, the works — and then you’ve got the human elements of love, purpose, memories, and the self. Set against the gorgeous backdrop of Vanillaware’s signature audiovisual style, it’s all very compelling.

AA: There are 13 characters and 13 intertwining narratives, that’s a lot of characters. How can the player keep up?

AD: That’s part of the fun! As you play, you gradually unlock more and more of each playable character’s route. They all weave together, and you’ll start piecing together truths for one character as reveals happen in another. For example, in Iori Fuyusaka’s prologue, one of the first things that happens is she bumps into a guy named Ei Sekigahara and drops her student ID. He picks it up, and the player will notice that the ID is a key clue for him during his own story.

If you ever find yourself lost among the various plotlines and mysteries at play, there’s a whole mode called Analysis that lets you dive into it all. Analysis mode contains two parts: the Event Archive, which lets you replay almost any story scene you’ve seen, and the Mystery Files, which function like an unlockable glossary collecting the facts as you know them thus far. Browsing through these is a great way to sit down and put all the puzzle pieces together as you play.

AA: What has it been like handling VO during quarantine?

AD: Oh man, it’s been quite an experience, haha. We started out recording as usual at the studio, but it wasn’t long before COVID-19 forced us out of that close-quarters environment. Everyone involved, especially the studio owners, engineers, and actors themselves had to come up with alternative solutions to get the job done. Actors’ safety is paramount — they need healthy lungs to do their jobs! — but nobody wanted to give up on this game’s incredible English voice track, either.

It took some time to work everything out, but ultimately, we ended up recording the rest over video conference call. It’s not as simple as just calling in and talking — we needed studio-quality audio recordings, a way for the audio engineers to work with said recordings on the spot and afterwards, and a way for each actor to view the director’s screenshared script at a readable size. To help achieve that studio quality, actors set up makeshift studios in their own homes, which sometimes meant getting cozy in a closet with a nice mic! Needless to say, there were a lot of technical complications, but everyone really went the extra mile to make it happen.

AA: Do you have any special stories you’d like to share about working with the voice actors?

AD: If you think the story of 13 Sentinels sounds complex, just imagine what our voice director had to say to explain it to each actor as they entered the booth! I lost count of the number of times “wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey” was said over the course of recording. Since there’s no single “main character” of this game, each actor only saw their own side of the story, leaving many of them excited to see how it all comes together in the end.

Without giving away any spoilers, I’d also like to say that certain aspects of this game presented an incredible acting challenge, and I’m so impressed with how well they all nailed it! There’s a real showcase of talent here, and I can’t wait for everyone to play it and find out what I mean.

AA: Any final message for the PlayStation Blog readers?

AD: Do you like food? I like food. Vanillaware likes food. Takatoshi Hijiyama from 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim likes food. If this game doesn’t make you want to urgently find someplace to buy yakisoba pan, I don’t know what will.

If you’re looking for something fresh and interesting, give 13 Sentinels a try! It’s one of my favorite games I’ve ever worked on in over nine years in the industry, and we all put our hearts into doing it justice. I genuinely love each and every character in the game, and I hope they’ll grow on you as much as they did on me.

    Thanks for your time, Allie!

You can pre-order 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim from physical retailers now to secure an artbook featuring Vanillaware’s painterly art. Digital pre-orders are coming soon!

Discover the Striking Art of Sakura Wars, Available Today

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Tite Kubo. You may know him as the creator behind one of the most popular manga series of all time, whose influential work has stretched to every corner of the anime industry, and whose name recently resurfaced. He is also the main character designer of Sakura Wars, now available on PS4.

It has been a decade since the steampunk world of Sakura Wars has seen light in the west, and even longer in Japan. And because of that, when it came time to reboot the series, Sega went to some of the biggest names in the anime, manga, and JRPG industries to help bring this incredible series back to the world. Fans of Tite Kubo know well his attention to detail and the way he diligently integrates each character’s personality into their visual appearance.

His concept sketches include insightful notes about each character. For example, he specifies that Sakura Amamiya smiles with a V-shaped mouth when she’s dressing up and feeling cute. The shrine maiden Hatsuho Shinonome’s look is a combination of “priestess + monk.” Azami, ninja of the Mochizuki clan, sports a bob haircut with a few stray hairs to give off the feeling that she doesn’t care much about her appearance. Additionally, Kubo-sensei noted that he decided not to draw crying faces for her or the worldly actress Anastasia Palma as “they don’t seem the type to cry in front of people.” For Claris’ clothing, Kubo-sensei called out such specific details as the fact that her Oxford ankle boots have 6 holes and her blazer is without pockets.

Along with Tite Kubo, any JRPG or anime fan is sure to recognize the names of some of the guest artists and their work. As captain of the Flower Division, you will be challenged by other Combat Revues from around the globe, most directly in the Combat Revue World Games. Each of these teams was handled by one of our guest artists, bringing their particular style and flair to their designs, as you’ll see below.

    Shanghai Combat Revue: Yukiko Horiguchi

    London Combat Revue: BUNBUN

    Berlin Combat Revue: Fumikane Shimada

Back home in Tokyo, the Imperial Combat Revue is surrounded by a cast of vibrant and memorable characters, from a huge fan of their theatrical productions and shop people in Ginza to old sword instructors and theater mascots… Every designer brings their matchless style to the work, and yet they all blend seamlessly together into Sakura Wars’ 1940s steampunk world of theater, mecha, and intrigue.

Itsuki Saijo and Hiromi Hongo: Noizi Ito

    Hakushu Murasame: Shigenori Soejima

    Grand Imperial Peanut: Ken Sugimori

As a reminder, the physical Launch Edition for Sakura Wars features reversible cover art, a sticker set featuring the main cast, and the Theater Add-On Bundle.

We also have more details to share regarding our Digital Standard ($59.99) and Digital Deluxe ($79.99) Editions that are available starting today. Just to reiterate, both options grant you an Imperial Combat Revue PS4 Dynamic Theme along with the Neko Ears Add-on Bundle. By upgrading to the Digital Deluxe Edition, you will also receive the following:

    • Legacy of Love Add-on Bundle
    • Charming Accessories Add-on Bundle
    • Swimsuit Add-on Bundle

But we’re taking things one step further. Early adopters of either digital edition will now also receive three Combat Revue dynamic themes featuring the main character designs of Tite Kubo. Digital Deluxe buyers receive two static themes, containing the character designs of the above-profiled artists, on top of that! That’s five different themes for the Digital Deluxe Edition you can use to switch up the look of your PS4 home screen, all at no extra charge.

Persona 5 Royal: Tips from the Heart, New Wallpapers

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Persona 5 Royal is almost here! Are you ready? To help you ace an all-new semester at Shujin Academy, I’m here to provide our top five tips and tricks:

    1. Get to know your confidants.

A main staple in the Persona series, you can socialize with key relationships to gain bonuses in battle or access to cool stuff!
In Persona 5 Royal only, you can hang out with student counselor Maruki or new transfer student Kasumi. On top of that, you can even spend extra quality time with my favorite detective prince, Akechi!

    2. Look out for Jose’s Shop in Mementos.

Not only is Jose adorable, his shop is full of useful items for phantom thievery. He’ll appear on the map and by trading stamps with him, you can alter effects within the procedurally-generated dungeon.

    3. Take your time in the Thieves Den.

Want to play some card games with Ann, Yusuke, and Morgana? You can, here in the Thieves Den. This is the Phantom Thieves’ space where you can change into different outfits (and different characters), freely listen to new song “Colors Flying High,” view previous in-game cutscenes, and more.

    4. Don’t forget, you’ve got all the DLC from the original Persona 5.

All DLC from the original Persona 5 is available for free for anyone with a copy of Persona 5 Royal. But the treasures don’t stop there, pre-order from PlayStation Store to receive a special Persona 5 Royal theme!

    5. Don’t go to sleep early!

Despite what anyone or any cat may tell you, you should stay up a little bit later this time around. There’s even more awaiting in Persona 5 Royal that I didn’t get a chance to touch on.

To celebrate the game’s impending launch, we have exclusive Persona 5 Royal wallpapers to keep your phone or desktop looking cool like Joker. Click here to download the full-res versions!

  • Persona 5 Royal: A Look at the Phantom Thieves

Persona 5 Royal: A Look at the Phantom Thieves

    Reading Time: 10 minutes

Not long to go before the release of Persona 5 Royal! This new release builds on the worldwide success of Persona 5 with the addition of new plots and characters. Fans can expect a whole new depth to the experience with new takes on the storylines of this beloved RPG. New to the world of Persona? We’re spotlighting the cast of characters and the storylines they’ll be finding themselves in.

New characters. New Personas. New Palaces. It’s not going to be your regular school year. Check out more below!

Stealing bad intentions from the hearts of corrupted adults

Play in modern-day Tokyo, where the main character has just moved to attend high school under close watch as he serves probation for a crime he was falsely accused of. During the school year, he and other students awaken to their powers to summon Personas. It’s up to this group of young adults to leverage their Personas to break into the hearts and minds of adults, reversing their negative and corrupt thoughts before they cause harm to others.

So, how does this ragtag group of “problem children” go about removing the evil from the hearts of corrupted adults?

The Phantom Thieves, as they are called, explore what is known as the Metaverse — a supernatural realm born from humanity’s subconscious desires. In the Metaverse lies Palaces — physical manifestations of peoples’ motivations. Some of them are good, and some of them, not so much. The Phantom Thieves must leverage the power of their Personas and break into the Palaces to get ahold of Treasures which symbolize the corrupt thoughts of their targets. Once they take these Treasures, corrupt thoughts disappear from their target’s psyche and they are redeemed for the better. The Phantom Thieves pick out their targets one by one and steal the Treasures from their Palaces to cleanse their consciousness, turning once malevolent people into virtuous citizens.

A teacher who asserts his authority with his fists. An artist who takes credit for other peoples’ work. These are the types of targets that the characters pick out to reform. Starting with people from their schools, the characters move on to other targets and eventually go on to reform the entire city as the story unfolds to new heights. The Phantom Thieves go about their missions by night — by day, they’re but a bunch of unassuming high school kids making their way through their lives with the rest of the lot.

The game opens with scenes that raise all sorts of questions — How did the characters come to start summoning Personas? What happened that led to all of this? What’s going to happen to our character, who starts off by getting caught? It’s an RPG that plays out almost like an interactive movie, creating more mystery and intrigue as players go through. Once you start, Persona 5 Royal is going to be a hard one to put down.

Players are sure to relish the excitement of living a double life. By day, forge relationships with classmates and live what appears to be a typical Japanese high schooler’s life. By night, however, make your way through the Metaverse and break into peoples’ subconscious, redeeming people of their evil thoughts. It’s going through such contrasting experiences that make the Persona series so fun to play.

    The Phantom Thieves

Outcasts. Misfits. Problem Children. Teenagers with rebellious spirits. Heroes. Whatever they may be called, these are the guys set to transform Tokyo for the better. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the characters and Personas to look out for:

    Main Character
    Code Name: Joker

Persona 5 Royal’s chief protagonist, Joker is a 2nd-year student transferring to Tokyo in the spring to attend the Shujin Academy. After realizing his powers to summon Personas, he leads the group of Phantom Thieves to rid the city of corruption.

    Initial Persona: Arsene

Characterized by his large silk hat and jet-black hair, Arsene’s Persona takes inspiration from one of French novelist Morris LeBlanc’s characters, who is known for his extraordinary thievery.

    Ryuji Sakamoto
    Code Name: Skull

A 2nd-year student at Shujin Academy and one of Joker’s classmates. An odd one out, Ryuji is known as a problematic kid in the school running a foul mouth. However, he is among the kindest and warmest of people to those in his circle of friends.

    Initial Persona: Captain Kidd
    New Persona Awakening: William

Nicknamed “Captain Kidd,” William is an aristocrat-turned-pirate who wreaked havoc in medieval Europe. He is rumored to have been funded generously by his peers for his nautical quests.

    Morgana
    Code Name: Mona

Just about everything about him tells you that he’s a cat, but Morgana will never admit to it. In fact, you’ll often hear him throughout the game protesting, “I’m not a cat. I’m Morgana!” He provides transport for the group in the Metaverse with his powers to turn into a bus.

    Initial Persona: Zorro
    New Persona Awakening: Diego

A master swordsman in Mexico during the time of Spanish colonial rule, Diego is a Robin Hood-like figure, a masked outlaw who defends commoners against tyrannical officials and other villains.

    Ann Takamaki
    Code Name: Panther

Joker’s classmate at school. Many think she’s beautiful and unique because of her American heritage, but it’s a blessing and a curse because it keeps her from integrating smoothly into the student population.

    Initial Persona: Carmen
    New Persona Awakening: Celestine

Celestine was a French mezzo-soprano who was most famous for her role of Carmen in the opera of the same name. She was strong-willed to the point that she would even write and edit her own songs for her shows.

    Yusuke Kitagawa
    Code Name: Fox

A devoted painter, Yusuke is a 2nd-year student at Kosei High on a full art scholarship. A disciple of esteemed Japanese painter Madarame, Yusuke has a unique sensibility at a level far beyond the norm.

    Initial Persona: Goemon
    New Persona Awakening: Gorokichi

One theory suggests that this new Persona takes on the childhood name of the legendary Japanese outlaw, Goemon Ishikawa. The legend goes that he took on the name ‘Gorokichi’ during his time studying the ways of the Iga-ryu ninja before eventually going rogue.

    Makoto Niijima
    Code Name: Queen

Queen is a senior at the Shujin Academy and president of the student council. She boasts a sharp mind with a tight set of values and a strong sense of responsibility. At times, Makoto can also be too straightforward and uncompromising. She is known as the brains behind the Phantom Thieves.

    Initial Persona: Johanna
    New Persona Awakening: Agnes

Agnes was a pope in the middle ages who ascended to the throne on the back of her unrivaled intellect. This, while pretending to be a man the entire time.

    Futaba Sakura
    Code Name: Oracle

One year younger than Joker, Futaba rarely goes to school and mostly stays at home. She’s not a big fan of mingling with people but makes up for it with superhuman programming and mathematical skills. She serves as strong behind-the-scenes support for the Phantom Thieves.

    Initial Persona: Necronomicon
    New Persona Awakening: Al Azif
Al Azif is the original Arabic name for Necronomicon, the most important textbook of magic in Cthulhu mythology.

    Haru Okumura
    Code Name: Noir

A 3rd year student at the Shujin Academy, Shun is daughter to the president of a prominent food business. She sports a gentle appearance and sophisticated demeanor. Possibly owing to her upbringing, she tends to shy away from social interaction as she doesn’t see much of a point in it.

    Initial Persona: Milady
    New Persona Awakening: Lucy
A new persona with the same name as the vindictive heroine featured in the Three Musketeers. Lucy is a beautiful woman who, despite being a married woman, was said to be an influential lover to various noblemen.

Kasumi Yoshizawa, bringing the story to new heights

Kasumi Yoshizawa is a mysterious new character with lots more to her than meets the eye.

    Kasumi Yoshizawa
    Code Name: Unknown

Kasumi is a transfer student who enrolls at Shujin Academy at the same time as the protagonist. Because she’s been an award-winning gymnast since middle school, Shujin Academy has high hopes for her future. Her stream of achievements and amicable personality give us the impression of her being spotless. Yet, she seems to harbor the same sets of doubts and fears that plague the rest of the Phantom Thieves.

Kasumi awakens to her powers to summon Personas, but the why and how behind this is shrouded in mystery. Despite all the rumors circulating about Joker’s past, baseless or otherwise, Kasumi harbors a healthy admiration for Joker. But whether her admiration for him is enough to get her to join the Phantom Thieves is another question. It’s not going to be as simple as that.

    Persona: Cendrillon

French for ‘Cinderella,’ Kasumi’s Persona is embedded with hidden symbols, from her shiny dress to the watch she sports on her chest.

Fans are going to want to see how her character and Persona end up affecting the rest of the Phantom Thieves! Find out when Persona 5 Royal comes exclusively to PS4 on March 31.

  • Meet the Cast of Sakura Wars in New Trailer

Meet the Cast of Sakura Wars in New Trailer

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Last month, we announced the official release date for Sakura Wars – April 28. We are back to raise the curtain on even more exciting news!

First, we have a new trailer giving you a close up look at the members of the Imperial Combat Revue’s Flower Division and Sakura Wars’ trademark LIPS feature, presented as a time- or context-sensitive interaction system. Through LIPS, what you say and how you say it will allow you to build strong relationships with your team… or it could get you in seriously hot water.

But let’s take a step back for a moment and discuss how LIPS, or the Live & Interactive Picture System, actually works in the game. This core gameplay system in Sakura Wars influences how you interact with characters and even the environment around you!

Usually presented in a time- or context-sensitive fashion, LIPS appears in four different scenarios:

    • Standard LIPS – The most common, in which you are presented with a series of dialog options to choose from. Or, you can choose none of them, which itself is an answer!
    • Click LIPS – These are typically seen during special events involving face-to-face conversations with context sensitive actions. For example, clicking on someone’s mouth starts or continues a chat.
    • Analog LIPS – Encountered in moments where you’re asked to provide a response, and it’s up to you to decide how much emotion you’ll put into that response based on how much you fill up a gauge on screen.
    • Environment LIPS – Similar to classic point-and-click adventure games, you are presented with a puzzle that you must solve by searching your surroundings for clues.

Many of these conversations will have a direct impact on your trust and affection levels with your other squad mates. Not only does this carry over to the later segments of the game along with the combat (as you unite your forces against a host of demons ready to feast on the capital, no less), but it will also put you on a path towards one of the many character-specific endings (which can be considered the more important priority).

Sakura Wars puts a big emphasis on character relationships and romantic storytelling. We mentioned before how the game is structured like an anime, with entire chapters primarily devoted to each of the girls, so you’ll spend a lot of time really getting to know them and the conflicts you’ll help them overcome. Let’s discuss a couple of examples.

Let’s take Claris. On the surface, she is a very kind and gentle person. She also presents a sophisticated persona that has carried her through life. She is a huge bookworm, who will become fully engrossed in a book and lose complete awareness of her surroundings. Say the wrong thing to her, though, and there’s a good chance she’ll tear you down with her more… scornful side.

Moving on, we also have a big update regarding the physical Launch Edition.

Previously, we announced this version would include a reversible cover, along with a sticker set featuring the main cast.

Now, we’re thrilled to announce a new perk for those who pre-order (or already pre-ordered) the Launch Edition: you will also receive the Theater Costume Add-on Bundle! This set includes new costumes for Kamiyama, Sakura, Hatsuho, Azami, Anastasia, and Claris inspired by costumes from the Flower Division’s various stage productions.

First details about the Digital Deluxe and Standard Editions

But that’s not all, as we’re revealing the details of our digital releases! Those who go with the digital version of Sakura Wars will have a couple options available – the Standard Edition, or the Digital Deluxe Edition. Regardless of which one you choose you will receive an Imperial Combat Revue PS4 Dynamic Theme along with the Neko Ears Add-on Bundle.

By upgrading to the Digital Deluxe Edition, you will also receive:

    • Legacy of Love Add-on Bundle
    • Charming Accessories Add-on Bundle
    • Swimsuit Add-on Bundle

There’s a lot to celebrate with this title. Not only is it the first mainline entry of the series in over a decade, but it also serves as a soft reboot to the entire franchise.

Whether you’re a fan of adventure games, character-driven stories that weave together action and romance, or maybe have a deep-seated love for anime like I do, there’s a whole lot we think you’ll find mighty appealing. Be sure to check out Sakura Wars when it launches April 28 on PS4!

With its unrelenting pace and slick presentation, there’s nothing quite like rocket-sliding around a stage, performing incredible feats of gymnastics in slow-motion while blasting a ton of giant robots into a tangled mess of wires.

Just as a reminder from our previous blog post, those who pick up the bundle digitally at PlayStation Store will unlock two exclusive static themes, which include:

    • Bayonetta & Vanquish Theme: Show some love for the original Bayonetta and Vanquish cover art with this theme – available for all digital purchases.
    • Bayonetta & Vanquish 10th Anniversary Theme: Celebrate the 10th anniversary with a theme featuring the brand-new cover art shown above. Available for a limited time for all pre-orders and purchases up to March 3, 2020, two weeks after launch.

Collectors, take note! Those who opt for the physical release of our first-run Launch Edition will get both games packed inside an embossed SteelBook case featuring brand-new cover art produced by Weapons Van and supervised by Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya and Sega. Whichever you decide to go with, you’re sure to be in for a treat!

Whether you’re eager to step into the gun-strapped heels of the Umbra Witch herself in Bayonetta, or want to discover for yourself why it’s so satisfying when you slide your way to victory in Vanquish — or both! — this is one brain-melting collection you won’t want to miss. As Sam Gideon says, “Time to hit hard and make ‘em regret it!”

‘SONIC – THE HEDGEHOG’ Der Film

  • Sakura Wars Takes Center Stage on PS4 April 28

Sakura Wars Takes Center Stage on PS4 April 28

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

Hello there, everyone! Last year, we announced the Sakura Wars franchise would be making its grand return to the West after so many years. It is with great pleasure that we can now reveal the official release date for Sakura Wars – April 28, 2020!

For those who may be unfamiliar, the original Sakura Wars made its debut way back on the Sega Saturn almost 25 years ago. It quickly became a beloved cultural phenomenon in Japan, thanks to its memorable characters, masterful writing, story-driven combat, and sublime music. From there, it grew into a franchise, spawning numerous sequels, spin-offs, and other multimedia adaptations, including prominent stage shows. Hands up if you watched the movie or anime series!

We’re excited to reintroduce everyone to Sakura Wars, presenting a new beginning for one of Sega’s greatest franchises. Whether you’re completely new to the series, or a longtime fan anticipating its historic return, Sakura Wars is an all-new narrative designed to be enjoyed by both parties.

Sakura Wars producer Tetsu Katano (whose official title is Deputy Department Manager/Producer of 2nd Development Division Department #1, 2nd Development Divisional HQ/Entertainment Content HQ – phew!) dives further into why newcomers should be interested in the game. “We’d like users to experience the detailed movements and expressions of the characters through cutscenes, and of course would like them to enjoy the story where users sometimes have intimate communications with the girls to build the stronger bond together. A number of famous creators also joined the team, such as Kohei Tanaka, who has composed a number of music scores for decades including the Sakura Wars theme song, and Tite Kubo, who designed the main characters.”

The Imperial Combat Revue takes the stage as Tokyo’s defense force against an imminent demon threat in this extravagant adventure. Soldiers in wartime, but theater performers in peacetime, the Revue’s Flower Division is not living up to their legacy and is at risk of being shut down. As newly appointed captain Seijuro Kamiyama, it’s up to you to turn the team around.

Sega of America’s associate localization producer, Andrew Davis, provides additional insight. “With the setting being what it is, there are many cultural references that may be less familiar to Western players, like the traditional Japanese candies or the “koi-koi” hanafuda card game. At the same time, Japan in the Taisho era was voraciously importing culture from around the world. It’s that charming mix of the traditional (Shrine maidens! Kimonos!) and the modern (Musical revues! Omelets!) that makes Sakura Wars so compelling. That’s why we were committed to presenting all these concepts authentically.”

During your adventure, you’ll interact with a colorful cast of characters via the dynamic LIPS dialogue system (a trademark of the series), where what you say and how you say it makes an impact both on and off the battlefield. This flows into the high-energy combat system, featuring giant steam-powered mechs called “spiricle striker” that can only be piloted by those with strong spiritual power. All of this is presented in the style of an exciting anime production, complete with gorgeous animated sequences and dramatic character arcs that will leave you eager for what happens next!

Tetsu Katano expands on what makes this title so distinct. “The previous Sakura Wars used 2D Anime-style graphics and a tactical combat system for the battles, which everyone was using back then. However, for this title, 3D has been incorporated to enhance its visual expression, and battles have been changed to action so that users could feel a higher sense of immersion than ever before.

“The game engine used for Sakura Wars is called “Hedgehog Engine 2.” The background graphics, GI and local reflections are similar to our Sonic entries, but the facial expressions and body animation have been blended in for the characters to show the subtle expression. The teary-eyes and the twinkle of the glasses are also expressed in an animation style. We focused on the small details, like the fabric on clothing.”

Now let’s meet the incredible cast of Sakura Wars. First off, we have our protagonist – the main character of our story, Seijuro Kamiyama. Formerly a captain of an auxiliary ship in the navy, he was reassigned to the Imperial Combat Revue to oversee the reformation of the Flower Division.

There, he meets his childhood friend Sakura Amamiya (voiced by Ayane Sakura), a novice stage performer who joined the Flower Division to follow in the footsteps of her idol, onetime mega-star Sakura Shinguji (star of the original trilogy). She believes strongly in defending Tokyo and lifting the spirits of the populace, and fervently prays the theater will eventually be restored to its former glory.

Sakura introduces Kamiyama to Hatsuho Shinonome (voiced by Maaya Uchida), a shrine maiden whose beauty draws visitors to her family’s historic Shinonome Shrine. Born in the working-class neighborhoods of central Tokyo, she’s a true child of the city who loves her people, her festivals, and everyone in the capital. Despite her brash exterior, she’s a dependable comrade.

We then get to meet the booksmart Claris (voiced by Saori Hayami) – full name “Clarissa Snowflake”, a sweet, intellectual girl from Luxembourg who always has her nose in a book. Her ferocious curiosity about the world drives her to read every day and learn about all kinds of topics.

Azami Mochizuki (voiced by Hibiku Yamamura) then appears from the shadows. A descendant of the Mochizuki clan of ninja, she displayed a tremendous aptitude for martial arts, battle tactics, and weapon-handling from a very young age. Thanks to the strict training she has undergone her entire life, she believes unquestioningly in the 108 Village Rules passed down by her clan, striving to obey them at all times.

Finally, there’s the dazzling Anastasia Palma (voiced by Ayaka Fukuhara), star of the European stage who hails from Greece. She recently transferred to the Tokyo revue after spending time in various revues around the globe. A world-class singer and actor, she has the charisma and confidence to play everything from the male lead to the bewitching temptress.

Throughout your adventure, you’ll meet other Combat Revues from around the world, all competing in a biennial tournament called the World Combat Revue designed to sharpen their skills and honor those who came before. Each of these revues and a few other characters were designed by a number of guest artists:

    • Shanghai Combat Revue: Yukiko Horiguchi
    • London Combat Revue: BUNBUN
    • Berlin Combat Revue: Fumikane Shimada
    • Itsuki Saijou and Hiromi Hongou: Noizi Ito
    • Hakushu Murasame: Shigenori Soejima
    • Great Imperial Gekizou: Ken Sugimori

As Tetsu Katano explains: “We selected the artists based on whether our image of the characters match their style. In order to fit all this together, Masashi Kudo has been assisting us greatly, though I believe it was a difficult challenge. Each artist made their designs based on the settings the development team provided. However, the details were all up to them, so their characteristics are shown in their design. Mister Tite Kubo also provided us with suggestions on the names for the core game settings and even designed the items.”

“Localization for the Western release of Sakura Wars was similar to another one of our popular titles, Yakuza 0,” Andrew Davis shares. “The game was first translated by our long-standing friends at Inbound Games (who’ve been working with us for many years) and passed to our internal team for a second pass. We focused on ensuring the dialogue flowed naturally while capturing the quirks of each character’s personality, just as we do with any project. For instance, Hatsuho’s speech is brash and confident, while Azami’s is terse and steely.

“After we were done, we reached out to another outside partner (Keywords Studios) to handle the localization into French, German, and Spanish. Just like with our English translation, these teams were committed to crafting faithfully entertaining scripts in their respective languages.”

As you can see, a lot of work and care has gone into this project. As avid fans ourselves of this series, we can’t wait for everyone to experience this amazing game and hope it’s only the start of something greater for the series in the West. Stay tuned as we draw ever closer to the launch of Sakura Wars this April!

The Yakuza Remastered Collection is Available Today

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Essence of Game Release! The entire Yakuza Remastered Collection is now available on PlayStation 4 in both physical and digital formats!

To celebrate the launch, and the momentous occasion of Yakuza 0-6 now all available on PlayStation 4 (Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, Yakuza Kiwami 2, Yakuza 3 Remastered, Yakuza 4 Remastered, Yakuza 5 Remastered, and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life), we’ve released a dynamic PS4 Theme featuring series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu’s iconic dragon tattoo, available for free to all owners of The Yakuza Remastered Collection. Bring the spirit of the dragon home to your PS4 today!

Also, Yakuza 5 director Masayoshi Yokoyama, Takaya Kuroda (voice actor for Kiryu), and Hidenari Ugaki (voice actor for Majima) have a special message for all of our Western Yakuza fans.

The Yakuza Remastered Collection is Available Today

I’d also like to take a moment to introduce the physical bundle for The Yakuza Remastered Collection, which includes Yakuza 3, 4, and 5 Remastered.

This bundle comes in a striking red digipack featuring series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu’s signature dragon tattoo, but it also comes with one non-traditional item for longtime series fans.

That’s right — for those who may not know, Yakuza 5 was a digital-only title when it released in the West on PlayStation 3, which means series collectors had a hole in their physical library where their Yakuza 5 case may have gone. With The Yakuza Remastered Collection, we saw an opportunity to fix that, so every Day One edition of the bundle comes with a PS3 case featuring the Western cover art and English logo for Yakuza 5!

We’re so happy to continue to expand this series for our Western fans – look forward to more from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios in the near future, including Yakuza: Like a Dragon when it releases later this year!
