Atomfall: Diving Deeper Into Its Unique Mechanics

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

With Atomfall coming to Xbox and Game Pass in just over a month (arriving on March 27), today we released the latest trailer for the game. Featuring brand new gameplay, the trailer highlights the main features that you will experience when you enter the quarantine zone.

I thought now would be a good time to give you more information on some of the game’s key features and what you can expect when you play Atomfall. For those who haven’t had chance to see the trailer yet, take a look:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-0oeZO3ymo?feature=oembed&w=500&h=281]

The trailer starts at the very beginning of the game. You wake up in a dark and eerie bunker and are met by a wounded man in a hazmat suit who immediately asks who you are and asks for your help. The problem is you don’t know who you are, or how you got there.

He tells you that you are inside a quarantine zone, built around the Windscale Atom plant following a nuclear disaster.

Set in the luscious British countryside in 1962, Atomfall is a fictionalised telling of what happened five years after true events in Northern England. It is a game about investigation and discovery – as you try to uncover the mystery behind what really happened at Windscale, but also who you are and what you’re doing there.

    Atomfall Screenshot

There is plenty to explore beyond the rolling hills of Cumberland, including a picturesque village, bandit camps, caves, tunnels, and mysterious buildings and facilities left abandoned by the British Atomic Research Division. All of these will hold their own secrets for you to discover.

You will find clues about what has happened and learn more about the colourful characters you meet along the way – but there is no clear single “truth”, and different people interpret what happened in different ways. This feeds into the game’s ‘Leads’ system, our new take on traditional gaming quests.

Some information that you uncover will open a Lead in the game. You can choose to track this down to uncover further secrets and hopefully get closer to some form of the truth. All the Leads in the game are completely optional, and all connect in one way or another to the larger mystery. As a result, the path you take through the game and the storyline is entirely up to you.

    Atomfall Screenshot

Another source of Leads is the cast of characters you will meet along the way. One of the first you may meet is Nat Buckshaw, who you find playing his guitar in the ruins of an old house. He is an extremely talkative chap and more than happy to give away everything he knows just to have someone to talk to.

However, with Nat and indeed everyone you meet along the way, you can never be sure who to trust and whether they are trying to use you for their own means.

Some characters also act as Traders, for example Molly the Tinker, who can be found in the Dale. In fact, one of the Leads that Nat provides, helps you to find Molly. Resources are scarce in Atomfall, and money is useless, so all trade is done by barter – striking a good deal with a trader can be vitally important. Each of them will prize different sorts of assets. One may want food and bandages, while another needs weapons. Careful observation and making a balanced trade will enable you to get the resources you need to survive.

One valuable tool you can trade for is the metal detector (you can either find one as you search the countryside or barter for one.) The metal detector is a vital asset as you scavenge for further resources. Atomfall is as much a game of survival as it is exploration – the resources, weapons and ammo you find will be vital if you are to find out what happened at the Windscale nuclear plant.

    Atomfall Screenshot

To aid you in the hunt for resources, you’ll be able to find metal detectors. Once you have one, you will hear it beep as you come within range of something to find. You then need to equip it and use it to find your treasure – whether that be some scrap metal, medical supplies or ammunition.

And you’ll need all the ammunition you can find – supplies are tight! Gangs of bandits litter the countryside, and they will think nothing of attacking on sight. Whether you choose to engage or run for cover is your choice but there are likely to be times when you will have no choice but to fight.

Raising a gun to someone who is only armed with a melee weapon may well be enough for them to be the one who retreats. Whether your gun is loaded or not, only you will know…

    Atomfall Screenshot

No matter what, you will need to be ready to adjust your strategy on the fly, using all the tools at your disposal to make it out alive. Melee combat, both armed and unarmed, will be vital. Sometimes, aiming a swift kick at an opponent in order to stagger them back is all the time you have to reload, and can be a life saver.

You are going to have to find ways to adapt and make do with what you have as you track down leads in the search of the truth… or at least one version of it.

We have only scratched the surface of the challenges, mystery and intrigue you discover in the quarantine zone. We cannot wait for you to get your hands on Atomfall when it launches on Game Pass as well as on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC on March 27.

This Green and Unpleasant Land – a Breakdown of the Atomfall Trailer

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

By now you have hopefully seen the trailer for Rebellion’s brand-new game Atomfall, which featured in the Xbox Summer Showcase. If not, then take a look:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HG3si5zKv0?list=PL0il2l-B_WwZmx_oaCNzMaKsEjMo517W0&w=500&h=281]

Atomfall is a single player survival-action game set in post-war Britain that draws inspiration from real-world events, British science fiction (such as The Day of the Triffids, The Quatermass Experiment, and the classic Doctor Who of the era) and mixes in Cold War paranoia and folk horror weirdness to create an intriguing game world that you just have to explore.

For this blog, we thought that it would be fun to give you a little more insight into what you see in the announcement trailer and some extra information about the game, its setting, and the characters you will meet along the way. Here are five key take aways about Atomfall

    1. Where Are We?

The trailer reveals glorious, seemingly idyllic, British countryside – resplendent with a local pub, classic red phone boxes, and a quaint village sign telling you that you are in Wyndham in the Lake District. This cheery outlook quickly changes as you see abandoned cars, a fallen helicopter, and a rusty childless playground. All is not as “bright and beautiful” as it first appeared to be.

    2. What’s Happened?

The news report voiceover tells us about an “emergency at Windscale Atom Plant”. To provide some context, in 1957 there was a fire at a nuclear site in the north of England which was the first major nuclear accident anywhere in the world.

Atomfall is a story told in the speculative fiction style of 1950s/’60s Britain, exploring what has happened in the local area five years after the Atom Plant emergency. A lot has changed and it’s up to you as the player to unravel the mystery – meeting various factions, cults, and characters along the way.

The way you interact with the people and groups you meet will shape the story and ultimately affect the fate of the quarantine zone.

    3. What’s With the Soldiers?

In response to the disaster the army has been sent in to create and maintain a quarantine zone. This response force is known as ‘Protocol’. They are the ones tasked with keeping people safe -but after five years, their outlook has soured…

You will learn more about Protocol as you interact with them – and the people they seek to control – over the course of the game. Are they a force for good, keeping people safe? Are they a force of oppression, making life harder for those in the quarantine zone? Or is there more going on? What are they hiding?

    4. Why do I need a metal detector?

Supplies are scarce in Atomfall. You will need to hunt and scavenge for resources including food, crafting materials, weapons, and ammunition. Every bullet is important, and it is vital that you don’t waste them!

A metal detector will help you to scavenge as much as you can and unearth other secrets too – but firstly you will have to find one or barter for one. Either way, it’s not going to be easy!

    5. Did I See Robots? With Flamethrowers!?

Yes! Protocol are using all the resources at their disposal to maintain the quarantine. This includes scavenging equipment from B.A.R.D. (British Atomic Research Division) science bunkers. The robots are programmed to do everything necessary to maintain the quarantine. You need to make sure you know what you are doing before choosing to take one on. I hope you weren’t expecting a pleasant quiet walk in the country!

There is so much more in the trailer we could touch upon: taking out killer Morris dancers with cricket bats, defending yourself with a selection of ranged weapons (including pistols, SMGs, bows and arrows and more), the strange blue glow on the Windscale plant in the distance, creepy guys in hazmat suits, weird monsters hidden in underground bunkers…

However, that will all have to wait for a later time.

We have a lot more to share and reveal in the leadup to the release of Atomfall in 2025. We are delighted to say that the game will be coming to Game Pass on day one and will be playable across Xbox consoles and PC.

We cannot wait for you to explore the Atomfall mystery. See you in the countryside!

  • Sniper Elite VR sets its sights on a July 8 release

Sniper Elite VR sets its sights on a July 8 release

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Your home, your family and everything you love lies in the path of a vast and brutal army. Will you pick up your rifle and stand against impossible odds to defend them?

Rebellion, in partnership with Just Add Water and Coatsink, brings you a brand new addition to our multi-million selling Sniper Elite series. You will experience a powerful World War II story through the eyes of an Italian Partisan, rising with your brothers and sisters to protect your homeland from the fascist forces that threaten to destroy your homeland.

Sniper Elite VR sets its sights on a July 8 release

We’ve designed Sniper Elite VR from the ground up as a VR exclusive game that retains the authenticity that the title is famous for and delivers a new perspective on our critically acclaimed sniping and stealth mechanics.

The first and most important of these is the scope. The PlayStation VR Aim Controller really opened our eyes to how far we could go with the realism of using a sniper rifle. When you lift the Aim and steady yourself to fire, you find yourself holding your breath and squeezing the trigger slowly. It’s not just about playing the role of a sniper, it actually helps you to land that first shot on target.

There were many technical challenges to overcome. It is, after all, adding a third camera to the rendering demands of the game. But, with some clever tricks assisted by the console’s horsepower, we’ve created the seamless, immersive and natural feeling of using a real, physical sniper scope.

With the PS Move controllers, you’ll manually feed a new clip of ammo and action the bolt of a Carcano rifle or slap a fresh magazine into a Sten — or, if John Woo is more your style, dual-wield a pair of Colt 1911s.

Sniper Elite’s defining signature moment is the iconic X-Ray cam. There was never any doubt that we would need to bring it to VR and that it would have to express all the punch and power of the original. It took a lot of fine tuning but I’m happy to report that we have succeeded. Like a lot of things in VR, you’ll have to see it for yourself before you believe it.

Free movement is the third pillar of the Sniper Elite series. The tactical options that open up when you can pick your own path through the enemy, sneak to an overlook position or sprint for cover when things go loud demanded that we step away from the ‘on rails’ gameplay of some VR shooters.

That has required that we support a suite of movement and comfort options. Sniper Elite VR allows you to customize many aspects of the movement system including free movement, single stick teleport and facing input and individual control over the position of inventory interact points and hand offsets.

The combined VR development experience of the three studios working on Sniper Elite VR has been brought to bear to create an experience for players at all comfort level preferences without compromising the thrilling sensations of the gameplay.

Rebellion is a strong believer in virtual reality as a platform for creating unique gaming experiences. We were part of the first group of studios to deliver a release title for PS VR with Battlezone Gold and the principles that informed the development of that game; that it should be a full AAA game that exploits the unique qualities of VR, remain true for Sniper Elite VR.

If you’re a fan of the Sniper Elite series or are coming to it for the first time, you are going to get an explosive and exhilarating experience that will challenge you and keep you coming back for more. We can’t wait for you to get your hands on it!

  • Sniper Elite VR erscheint am 8. Juli für PS VR

Sniper Elite VR erscheint am 8. Juli für PS VR

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Sniper Elite VR offers a fantastic, thrilling test of your long-range skills.

    3. Three control methods

On PlayStation VR you’ll be able to play Sniper Elite VR in three different ways. For those who want to feel the weight of a rifle in their hands and the scope up against their eye, the PSVR Aim controller offers highly intuitive controls.

Or you can go with PS Move controllers and immerse yourself in the WW2 shooter experience. Use Move gestures to bring rifles to eye level, replace rounds, grab and throw grenades and more.

Finally, if you prefer a more traditional gaming experience, Sniper Elite VR fully supports DualShock too. Playing it feels great, whichever control method you choose.

    4. Move the way you want to

We know different players prefer different ways to traverse landscapes in virtual reality. Sniper Elite VR offers both free movement and teleport movement options, and plenty of options to help ensure the game feels comfortable to play whether you’re seated or standing up.

From firefights across the streets of picturesque Italian villages to chaotic bunker raids, we’ve got a very generous campaign on offer here. And Sniper Elite VR isn’t designed to be played just once. We offer additional challenges, mission rankings and more. So there’s that extra incentive if you want to take the Nazis down all over again.

    6. Feature-full Sniper Elite gameplay

Sniper Elite fans will instantly recognize the core gameplay that they know and love from the series. You’ll be able to use sound masking, set traps, create distractions, and perform stealth and melee kills. You’ll set your sights on a variety of targets including front-line soldiers, officers, snipers, Jäger troopers, tanks and patrol boats. And as you progress through the campaign you’ll be able to master your weapons and fine-tune a diverse arsenal of WW2 armaments.

    7. The Kill Cam returns, adapted for VR

One thing you won’t have seen in the gameplay trailer but you may be excited to learn: Sniper Elite VR delivers the iconic X-Ray Kill Cam, now adapted for virtual reality! We’re really proud of the work we’ve done to ensure it delivers that bone-shattering, organ-piercing drama in VR while remaining a completely comfortable experience – and, as ever, it’s a completely optional thing if it’s just not for you!

We know loads of you have been waiting very patiently for Sniper Elite VR. • Zombie Army 4 Rises Today on PS4

Zombie Army 4 Rises Today on PS4

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hi everyone — my name’s Jason Kingsley and I’m the Creative Director and Co-founder of Rebellion. I’m delighted to be back at PlayStation.Blog the day Zombie Army 4: Dead War launches on PS4!

It’s almost five years ago to the day my first PS Blog post got published, and oddly enough that was all about Zombie Army Trilogy. It was so exciting to see PlayStation players fall in love with our crazy 1-4 player Sniper Elite spinoff. Loads of you teamed up to gun down Hitler’s hordes of the damned. Were you one of those who sent the demon Fuhrer to the pits of hell?

Zombie Army 4 Rises Today on PS4

    The Dead War Rages On

Zombie Army 4 is bigger, deadlier and dare I say even crazier than what came before. The Dead War continues in a diabolical story campaign, again for 1-4 players. Not only do the damned still roam the Earth, but they’ve developed strange new powers. You’ll face all manner of monstrosity, from fast-paced crawlers to zombie snipers, flamethrower-wielding elites to undead-summoning generals, and even zombie tanks. Oh, and zombie sharks for that matter!

A greater threat demands stronger resistance. In Zombie Army 4 we’ve introduced a range of special supercharged abilities. Deploy a long-range overkill to take out multiple zombies with just one bullet, go into slow-mo to tear through undead, or line up a rapid-fire chain of pistol headshots! Maybe you prefer things up close and personal — take out zombies with brutal executions and use special melee attacks to control the crowd. That’s on top of the lethal array of environmental traps and deployable items to hand, elemental attachments for your weapons and tons of other additions.

Progress through the massive levels of our challenging story campaign and you’ll rank up, unlocking even more new goodies to play around with. You can build the slayer you want with our brand new perks system, upgrade your arsenal into death-dealing super-weapons, and apply modifiers to items like grenades and trip mines.

Despite all these additions, we’ve held onto the 80s horror movie aesthetic, shambling but deadly zombies, and grindhouse arcade third-person shooting that you all fell in love with in Zombie Army Trilogy. Zombie Army 4, just like Zombie Army Trilogy, is an absolute romp of a video game!

    Beware the Hell Cult

I do have one juicy titbit to offer before I go, though. We’ve already announced some of our post-launch plans for Season 1 of Zombie Army 4 — check out trailer teasing the season’s three-part story campaign, “Hell Cult,” and the bucket-load of brand new content also coming in the first season.

I’m really excited about Hell Cult, though. The story offers a fascinating new turn for the Zombie Army series, and it takes you and your fellow dead-hunters to extraordinary new realms of chaos. I can’t say too much without spoiling things, but I think you’re all going to really enjoy it. I’ve probably said too much so I’ll stop there!

Until then, I hope you have an amazing time with Zombie Army 4. Our whole studio has put our souls (of the damned!) into the game. Now the Dead War is finally upon us — see you on the battlefield!

Delainey: My name is Delainey Ackerman and I worked as a Technical Artist at DRI on Arca’s Path VR. Essentially that means bridging the gap between artist’s creativity and programmer’s problem solving to bring a cohesive and visually stunning experience to players.

Chris: I’m Chris Murray, the sound designer on Arca’s Path VR. I was responsible for creating all the sound effects and implementing Raffertie’s score into the game.

Talk a bit about your previous experience developing content for VR and how it informed your vision for Arca’s Path

Delainey: Previously I was the Technical Artist for Hold the World – a Factory 42 production for Sky – a VR experience with David Attenborough set in London’s Natural History Museum. As a photorealistic experience, Hold the World provided integral experience in lighting, graphics, and designing VR spaces that fully immerse a player within a generated experience.

Chris: I also worked on Hold The World – a Factory 42 production for Sky – as Quality Assurance Lead and Technical Sound Designer, testing the entire experience as well as implementing many of the sfx.

What were some of the biggest inspirations to the creative direction of Arca’s Path?

Delainey: Arca’s Path was influenced by science fiction and classical fairy-tale narratives including Wizard of Oz and Hansel and Gretel. The art direction was heavily inspired by the vaporwave movement, incorporating bold colour palettes with glitching of VHS degradation. These inspirations helped us to create two worlds; a lowlife, high tech scrapheap where the protagonist finds a futuristic headset and the wondrous, lush simulation to which she is transported.

What are the greater themes of Arca’s Path and how do these themes factor into the gameplay?

Delainey: Arca’s Path revolves around the contrast of reality and simulation, becoming infatuated with utopia and trapped within its inviting clutches.

Arca’s Path is a hands-free experience, allowing players to explore dreamlike environments and interact with things merely by looking.

Was this mode of play – and accessibility in general – always the focus or did this approach evolve over the course of development?

Delainey: The original brief was to design a game that could run on any VR headset. Platforms vary widely in technical capabilities and performance (controller buttons, motion tracking, CPU/GPU power etc.) yet the common thread across all VR headsets is the ability to look anywhere in 3 dimensional space. This inspired the core mechanic of moving through a world through a player’s gaze.

This pillar wove in nicely with the narrative of Arca’s Path VR where the protagonist girl enters a simulation and the player feels as though they’re guiding her through the enchanting environments with nothing but the power of their mind.

Were there any concepts, sequences or ideas that you wanted to work into Arca’s Path but just couldn’t find a way to make it fit?

Delainey: With any creative project you start with myriad ideas and possibilities. As the realities of production become apparent this focuses the creative process into bringing the best of these ideas to fruition.

What have been some of the biggest challenges in developing Arca’s Path?

Delainey: To convey narrative without any written or spoken dialogue we relied heavily on the amazing soundtrack from Raffertie. Throughout the game the music guides the player through a journey of technical challenges and emotions.

Chris: The sound effects were created with the aim of emphasising the language of the score at every turn while also referencing the girl’s real world outside the simulation, much like nearby sounds enter our dreams while we sleep.

How many people were on the team throughout the development process? How long did it take to make?

Delainey: The development team averaged 8-10 people working over 10 months. The dev team at DRI was also supported by Rebellion helping to achieve quality and maintain performance across multiple VR platforms.

What do you ultimately want players to take away from their time with Arca’s Path?

Delainey: Arca’s Path offers an escape from reality, both for the player and the protagonist. Hopefully the audio and visuals of the girl’s scrapheap and simulated world provide the player with the same emotional journey the protagonist experiences as she fights first to escape her bleak reality and then to regain her freedom.
