ReadySet Heroes Adds ‘Survival’ Mode, New Multiplayer Options

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hi PlayStation Fans! The ReadySet Heroes team has been hard at work on an all-new “Survival” mode that I’m excited to finally tell you all about. “Survival” is a cooperative PvE mode with game-to-game progression and unlocks. And for the first time in ReadySet Heroes, four players can fight together on the same team! Best of all, the update is out now and to celebrate we’ve reduced the price by 30% to just $13.99 (CAN $20.99) for a limited time during the holidays!*

“Survival” takes place in new, larger dungeon rooms created specifically for this mode. Players fight waves of enemies in each room until reaching Treasure Time where they can equip new weapons and armor before moving deeper into the dungeon. The goal is to clear as many rooms as you can of enemies. The game ends when an entire team falls before Treasure Time. It only takes one teammate to survive and revive everyone in the next room. So be careful when timing your attacks and dodges. Go too slow though, and you’ll feel the pain. The more time you spend in a game of “Survival,” the more difficult the enemies become, scaling in both health and damage.

Gameplay required to unlock some characters and skins

To take on these stronger enemies, you’ll have to make use of the new perks and character levels. Perks are bonuses that you equip before each game. They can increase your chances of finding epic and legendary treasure, letting you deal more damage with certain types of weapons, reviving your teammates, or even dealing a critical hit. The number of perks you can equip depends on the level of your character. The more you play with certain characters and perks, the stronger they’ll become. Higher level characters begin with more shards, so higher stats. Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses in their shard distribution. And higher level perks increase the power of the bonus they apply. Level up your characters and perks to make it deeper and deeper into the dungeon. You also unlock new perks as you play, with over 50 in all.

Gameplay required to unlock some characters

There is one more thing standing between you and Treasure Time: legendary enemies. We’ve added new tough variations of enemies that are bigger and stronger than their common counterparts. The deeper you go, the more likely you are to run into some of these guys. And watch out when you do. They can’t be knocked back and their attacks can’t be interrupted. You’ll have to master your arsenal to take them down.

“Survival” can be played solo, split screen, and online.** And this mode has a new Friends Only feature, which allows you to launch a private online game with your friends without needing to launch matchmaking.

Gameplay required to unlock some characters

Finally, if you’re playing ReadySet Heroes in split screen, you can turn on the character levels and perks from “Survival” mode and use them in “Crawl n’ Brawl” mode!

We’ve got some more plans for ReadySet Heroes in December, including a weekend to play ReadySet Heroes for free from December 19 to December 23 (PlayStation Plus won’t be required to play online multiplayer as a part of the free trial) and a sale so your friends can join in the fun over the holiday period, taking the price down by 30% until December 23.

As always, see you in the dungeons!

*30% reduced from $19.99 (CAN $29.99), valid from December 12 to December 23.

  • How to Play ReadySet Heroes, Out Tomorrow

How to Play ReadySet Heroes, Out Tomorrow

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hello everyone. This is Lance Hoke, the Lead Producer for ReadySet Heroes. Here at Robot, we set out to make a game that was easy to pick up and play with your family and friends. With the game releasing tomorrow, we figured now would be a good time to give you an overview of the different ways you can play and other tidbits about the game.

Brawl with Friends or Crawl Solo?

For those looking for a bit of casual competition, we feature an eight-minute dungeon crawl and a boss fight, followed by an all-out two-minute Brawl to determine the winner. It’s a lot of fun packed in just 10 minutes!

This is a great way to play with your friends or family on the couch, and it’s accessible for all skill levels.

We also have a mode that is a fantastic single player or local co-op game that challenges you (or your friends) to run the gauntlet! You’ll work your way through 30 increasingly difficult levels until you defeat the final boss.

    Local and Online?

What’s great about ReadySet Heroes is that we give players choice on how they want to play. If you want to play offline Tower Crawl or split-screen multiplayer with your friends, then you can play local, without ever having to login online. Connect a few controllers and you’re all set for some frantic local multiplayer gaming! ReadySet Heroes supports up to 2-4 friends, so grab your best buds, or your rival siblings and battle it out!

If your friends are all at home, jump online and play with the rest of the ReadySet community*. You can match into a team game where you’ll be partnered up with a random player or play in free-for-all where you can go lone wolf against others online. ReadySet Heroes is cross-play, so you’ll be playing with both PlayStation and PC players.

Slow and Steady or Fast and ”Fur”ious?

How you approach the Crawl is up to you. Whether you sprint to the finish to beat the opposing team, or if you take your time shard gathering (gotta get those skill points!) Here are some tips to get the most out of your playthrough:

With the Dungeon Crawl only being eight minutes long, you’ll need to decide how you’re going to use that time to prepare yourself for the Brawl against the players at the end.

One approach is to search every inch of the levels for mobs to defeat and barrels to open. Every shard you collect increases your skills (Armor, Attack, Speed, Defense, and Magic). You’ll also be more likely to find the Spell Vendor that can cast meteor storms, blizzards, and other spells against the other teams. Being thorough is also a good way to unlock challenges quicker and learn the levels for future runs.

Another approach is to rush through the levels as fast as possible. Fight when necessary and grab easily accessible shards, but don’t linger. Each level gives you a treasure chest (we call this Treasure Time). Inside the chest you’ll get two new items (armor, weapons, gear, or spells). The more of these chests you open, the more chances you have at getting better loot and loadout options.

Bosses — Fight Now? Or Later?

Bosses are the final level before the Brawl, but you can skip right to them starting about halfway through the Crawl. Defeating the boss gives you a boss chest and a huge loot drop of shards, plus each Boss chest gives you a better chance of scoring some Epic and Legendary loot. The tricky part is deciding the best time to go after the boss. If you challenge before you’re ready, you might spend too much time defeating them or get wiped and sent back to the Crawl. If you manage to defeat the boss, the Crawl will end early, reducing the timer to 20 seconds for everyone in the game. This can really put the pressure on the other teams. Our lead designer Kyle Snyder wrote a blog post detailing some of our Bosses and Brawls.

I hope you all enjoy ReadySet Heroes tomorrow when it launches. We are already hard at work to support the game and its community with additional content, including free maps, in the months to come. I look forward to seeing you on the crawl… let the battle commence!

  • The Brawls ‘n Bosses of ReadySet Heroes, Out October 1

The Brawls ‘n Bosses of ReadySet Heroes, Out October 1

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hey PlayStation fans. I’m Kyle, the lead designer on ReadySet Heroes from Robot Entertainment. With our October 1 launch quickly approaching, I got a chance to hang out with the PS Underground crew for a play session and an introduction to “Walrus Hockey.”

In our last blog post, Elyse introduced some of the enemies you’ll encounter while crawling through the dungeons. This time I’d like to show you some of what you’ll see at the end of the dungeon and after the crawl by detailing some of our brawls and bosses.

    The Brawls

After the dungeon crawl, a round of ReadySet Heroes concludes with an all-out brawl. The brawl brings together all players, decked-out with their gear from the crawl, to compete in one of five objectives. Here I want to go over a couple of my favorites.

    Snail Race

Snails usually aren’t the ideal creatures for a race, but these big guys have a need for speed. Each team has their own snail, and the snail that travels the furthest by the end of the brawl wins.

You’ll need to speed up your snail to win. Smack berry bushes scattered around the level with your weapon to grab berries. Throw the red berries into your team’s flower cannon to launch the berry to your snail. When your snail takes a bite, it’ll give him a boost.

You can also sabotage your opponents by throwing the poison berries into their flower cannons. These berries slow snails down by making them a little queasy.

Finally, keep an eye out for golden berries. These berries give your snail a huge speed boost. They’re great for catching up to the pack or securing the lead.

    Walrus Hockey

Walrus hockey is all about trying to feed sushi to giant walruses. Each team has their own walrus rotating around the ice rink. Players use their weapons to send sushi flying across the ice and into the mouths of their walruses. The team that consumes the most sushi wins.

Much like in snail race, you can sabotage your opponents. This time, you’ll need to hit the stinky fish heads into their walrus. This subtracts a point and causes their walrus to duck under the water for a few seconds. This leaves your opponents unable to score.

Walrus hockey also has a golden sushi. The golden sushi is worth five points. It’s often a game changer.

In snail race and walrus hockey, you still have to manage fighting the opponent players while trying to complete the objective. Finding the right balance between combat and feeding the snails and walruses is the key to victory.

    The Bosses

The dungeon crawl in ReadySet Heroes is on a timer. You have less than ten minutes to defeat enemies, navigate through traps, and find loot. But if you’re quick enough, you’ll have a chance to take on a boss. The bosses are difficult battles, but defeating them gives you the best chance of finding epic and legendary items. Here are two of the bosses you’ll encounter.

The Mischievous Warden of the Dead – The Nekomancer

The Nekomancer is the boss you’ll find haunting the graveyards. To halt your loot-gathering, she wields a giant scythe, creates ghostly firewalls, and summons skeleton minions.

When the Nekomancer first spawns, she shuffles her coffins and you’ll want to find which one she’s hiding in. Guess the wrong coffin and you lose precious time.

After the coffin sequence, the Nekomancer goes into her ghost form and can’t be damaged. You’ll need to use the flaming skulls from defeating her skeleton minions to light the level’s pyres. When the colors of the pyres match the color of the Nekomancer’s eyes, she will exit her ghost form, giving you a chance to deal damage.

Here’s a little Easter egg: the sounds you’ll hear the Nekomancer making are actually the voice of my cat, Karma. I used a handheld recorder to capture her performance and then our audio director, Rodney, modulated and implemented it.

The Stone Guardian of the Forest – Olek

You’ll find Olek watching over the woodlands and quickly discover that he was not created to politely greet intruders.

Olek has two attacks. He begins by spinning around the level, pulverizing anything that gets in his path. During his spin, you won’t want to try to hit him with melee attacks. Try attacking from range, or wait until he gets dizzy and falls. When Olek recovers, he’ll activate his arm cannons and blasts energy shots.

When Olek reaches half health, he removes his head, which becomes another obstacle to overcome. The head continuously spins around the room shooting energy shots while Olek performs his other attacks.

Defeat these bosses for your best chance at a legendary drop. And remember, the Nekomancer and Olek are just two of the bosses you’ll be up against.

I’m excited for you to experience these and the rest of our bosses and brawls when ReadySet Heroes launches on October 1 on PS4 and PC.

  • Meet the Colorful Characters of ReadySet Heroes, Out October 1

Meet the Colorful Characters of ReadySet Heroes, Out October 1

    Reading Time: 7 minutes

Hi PlayStation fans! I’m Elyse and I’m the Art Lead for at Robot Entertainment. I’m happy to announce that ReadySet Heroes will launching October 1st on both the PlayStation 4 system and PC. You can pre-order the game now and score some fun content, which we’ll detail later in this post.

I can’t wait for you all to play and I’m excited to share more about the world of ReadySet Heroes and the characters that inhabit it. We created a rich fantasy realm in which you will encounter harrowing enemies, and challenging puzzles all designed to test your skills to prove yourself as a true champion.

Every game needs heroes, and we wanted to create a diverse lineup of charming characters for players to choose from. There are ten playable heroes*, each with a unique personality. Each have journeyed from their home to compete in the trials in hopes of becoming a champion.

Players will start with 5 heroes to choose from. Players must complete certain challenges to unlock the remaining 5 heroes.

I’d like to introduce you to a few of my personal favorites and talk about how we approached their designs.

    Tuck

Tuck the badger is courageous, confident and adventurous, and was the first hero we created for the game. We explored many ideas of how to translate a badger’s characteristics into his design, which set the tone for the rest of the heroes. To achieve a more stylized aesthetic we choose to simplify the texture and pattern of his fur into similar shapes that would read well from the in game camera distance.

    Dixie

Dixie the rabbit is brave, funny, and a bit of a tomboy. A rabbit felt like a perfect fit for her energetic personality, and her giant ears and wide feet add a fun element to her silhouette.

    Ollie

Ollie the lizard is a novice warrior, often clumsy and always good humored. Concepting a lizard was a good opportunity to add a splash of bright color to the hero lineup. It was a lot of fun to come up with the patterning of his spots and stripes!

    Willow

Willow the woodpecker is a sharp witted, serious competitor, with a mysterious nature. Adding a bird hero created an opportunity for the animators to have some fun in creating her animations. Check out how she glides into the scene and shows off that distinctly bird-like twitch in her movements.

When deciding how to approach the character designs, animal heroes felt like a great fit for the world we wanted. It created an opportunity to explore which animals would make for great heroes, but also created some additional technical challenges for the team to consider. The biggest of these was how to achieve visual variation in size and proportion while working on a shared skeleton for the animations. We explored various styles for the characters as shown below to work out which look would work with shared sets of animations, while still allowing for some variation between animal types.

On the design side, the heroes also have very limited differences to their starting stats like speed, and attack, so we wanted to be careful to not imply those differences were greater by changing the size and proportions of the animals too drastically.

What would a trial be without enemies, and ReadySet features a lot! During the dungeon crawl portion of the game, players journey through a variety of different worlds which each feature a unique set of adversaries. The artists and designers worked closely together to come up with enemies which are both visually amusing and challenging to encounter.

When concepting these enemies our process was very organic to facilitate more creativity. The design team would meet with the concept artists to discuss their initial thoughts on what type of creatures fit well with each world. From there the artists came up with a number of sketches for enemies that could fit with the gameplay mechanics the designers had envisioned. Let’s take a look at a few of these enemies that you’ll encounter.

    The Woodland Sprout

These little fellas may be small, but they’re just as spunky and determined. We tried out a number of various color schemes for them before landing on the pink and green combo marking them as denizens of the forest them reside in. You will rarely find one alone, and while they are not among the stronger foes their spear attacks can be a true challenge when they group up.

    The Skelly

The Skelly is exactly who you don’t want to discover walking around a graveyard at night. They were one of the first enemies to be concepted and help to set the style of the rest of the enemies with the exaggerated proportions of their heads and bodies. These foes will wander until they spot you then unleash a slashing attack with their broadsword.

    The Lava Turtle

Lava Turtles are not the swiftest of beasts but be careful to not get in their way or you will find yourself set ablaze. They can be found roaming the paths of the cave world and will attack if you get too close. Their hard shell means they are tougher to defeat than they would otherwise appear.

    The Slime Knight

The Slime Knight is a great example of how we approached enemy design. The designers requested a larger character who was slow but extremely powerful. An armor suited enemy fitted well with the type of beast you’d find roaming the castle halls. To add an extra twist the concept artist came up with the idea of the purple slimes we had already created for the Castle to “possess” the armor, leading to the Slime Knight you see today. Do not make the mistake of underestimating them as one swing from their mace inflicts a large amount of damage.

Hopefully you’ve enjoyed learning more about the characters of ReadySet Heroes, and will be thinking about which hero you want to main – I’m calling Ollie now! There are many more characters to discover including some epic bosses to battle, so be ready for more to come.

Starting today, if you pre-order you can score a lot of exclusive goodies we created only for PlayStation players, including our digital soundtrack, and a special skin and crown that your champion can wear online and offline.

You’ll notice the classic PlayStation symbols on the crown and the signature PlayStation blue outfit.

On top of that, you will instantly get 10 PSN Avatars of our heroes and a theme to decorate your PlayStation 4 system.
