Mosaic Tackles the Horrors of Modern Society Tomorrow on PS4

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hi, this is Krillbite Studio. We are very excited to launch our game Mosaic on PS4 tomorrow. Mosaic is an experimental, narrative-focused game experience with a unique visual style that we have been working on for four years.

With our previous game, Among the Sleep, we explored the horrors of childhood. In that game, you control a small toddler who explores a nightmarish fantasy world created by the child’s traumatic experiences of growing up with an alcoholic parent. The child uses its imagination to cope with a grim reality.

In Mosaic, we deal with a very different sort of horror — the everyday horror of our modern society and lifestyle. In this game you control a protagonist who works in front of a computer at a massive company called The Mosaic Corporation. Every day is the same grind — get up, go to work, work, go home, sleep, repeat. The chores you do feel meaningless. The city is cold. People are dismissive. Your in-game-phone keeps bothering you with messages from management.

In order to cope, our protagonist seeks escape and solace in whatever glimpses of warmth and humanity they can discover in the everyday grind, triggering surreal and comforting daydream sequences. But nightmares also lurk around every corner, and a beautiful dream can soon turn into another grim and despairing nightmare.

The concepts and themes of Mosaic came to us while finishing Among the Sleep. It was a pretty intense crunch period, and while trekking to and from our offices we started observing the commuters around us gathering in buses, trains, trams and subways every morning to be transported into the city, and then back out again in the afternoon. Everyone looking miserable. Everyone just obeying orders to get their paycheck to stay alive for another month.

From this initial concept we designed a game where you are a small and insignificant piece of a large machinery. You are trapped in a system you have no control over that forces you to work and obey to survive. It’s a game that tries to tackle a lot of themes: everyday mundanity, urban isolation, the flipside of technology, and the place of the individual in modern society.

If you like focused, artistic, surreal and experimental game experiences, we hope you will give Mosaic a shot. It’s an atmospheric 2-3 hour narrative experiment with a unique visual style, and we are very proud of it. See you at the office!

Modern Warfare Season Two Starts Tomorrow, Including New PS4-Exclusive Content

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

The exciting launch of Season Two for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is just around the corner! We are thrilled to share details on the return of the Rust Multiplayer map, the emergence of Ghost into the fray, as well as a preview of the rest of Modern Warfare Season Two.

Plus, PlayStation 4 players can experience the latest Special Ops Survival map — Azhir Cave — and take to the battlefield with an exclusive* Weapon Blueprint.

    Read on for more!

    Season Two Multiplayer Maps

Season Two will launch two maps on February 11 – Rust and Atlas Superstore. Veteran Call of Duty players may remember Rust, a desert oil yard battleground with fast-paced combat. Atlas Superstore is an all-new map that takes place in a warehouse store where players must battle through the aisles, over toppled boxes, and other wrecked merchandise.

    Atlas Superstore

A warehouse-style supermarket that gave Verdansk citizens everything from lumber and fresh fruit to oversized stuffed bears, Atlas Superstore is now the ransacked base for Al-Qatala forces. Among the remains of whatever goods this market sold are crates and canisters of highly dangerous materials for war, with natural light peering in from the roof of this exposed structure. The market itself isn’t the only playable area; be prepared to take action into the employee-only rooms and out into the side shipping and receiving entrances.

5 Tips for Mastering Atlas Superstore

    1. Atlas Superstore has a mix of long corridors – also known as the shopping aisles – and cramped rooms, making any loadout viable on this map. Whatever you decide to use, keep in mind its strengths and weaknesses as you weave through the massive market.
    2. Because the shelves are not fully stocked, it is possible to see your enemies browsing the aisles next to you. Be on guard while travelling through these spaces, lest your rival gets a free hit or two on you.
    3. These warehouse shelves are also enough to support an Operator or a few, which allows for some unique ways to travel across the map. Learn the shortcuts and high ground spots around Atlas Superstore, and you might just become a master of the market.
    4. Some employee areas, namely the ones accessible from either team spawn, have prime views over the market down below. Even if you have to check out of the main combat zone for a while, taking overwatch from one of these points could help your team push an objective or clean up the aisles in general.
    5. Atlas Superstore is an exposed structure, with multiple points in the roof opened up to allow natural light and air into the massive warehouse. In terms of how this applies to combat, it is possible to pilot Killstreaks through these gaps, and it is absolutely necessary to do so in order for them to be most effective.

    Rust

The classic map returns from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2! A small map for fast-paced combat, Rust brings the battle to an oil yard in the middle of the desert. The site of the Modern Warfare 2 Campaign mission, “Endgame”, may be just that for players who don’t learn the tricks to master this arid field of play. Utilize the environment for cover and grab the high ground and low ground to take advantage of your enemies. Rust will also be playable as a Gunfight map!

Before, you take to Rust we’ve compiled a list of tips to master the oil yard amid a contested firefight:

    5 Tips for Mastering Rust

    1. Using the high ground is one strategy for Rust but mind the path and work with your teammates to provide cover before taking the ladder. Consider equipping a pistol as a secondary, so even when you are climbing you still have an offensive weapon if you need it.
    2. Rust doesn’t just feature a high ground, but a low ground as well. Find the hidden pathways underneath parts of the tower and other areas of the map to pop-up and surprise enemies.
    3. Consider equipping Trophy System as your Field Upgrade to protect you and your teammates from the inevitable hail of lethal and tactical equipment that occurs on smaller maps.
    4. For perks, consider Quick Fix and Shrapnel. Quick Fix increases your health regen rate when you get kills or capture and hold objectives. The fast-paced nature of Rust will give you access to multiple enemies, and with the constant action have a little extra oomph in your health regeneration never hurts. Shrapnel will give you an extra lethal which can help you damage or eliminate opponents that are in tight clusters.
    5. Be wary of using Tactical Sprint, because when you do you won’t have access to your weapon. While the extra boost of speed can be advantageous, really consider if it’s worth the risk before taking the sprint.

    More Maps for Season Two

Alongside Rust and Atlas Superstore, Modern Warfare players will get additional maps for Ground War and Gunfight modes.

In Ground War, players can find Zhokov Boneyard — a large sprawling airplane junkyard with room to capture objectives, advance your team’s territory, and terrain for vehicle warfare. For Gunfight, experience Bazaar, a small section from the streets of Urzikstan-turned-battleground that’s a tense and tactical battle.

Additional Content in Season Two for All

Players will have more ranks to climb to advance their Season rank while past ribbons will be memorialized. New ways to earn XP include new Trials, ribbons, challenges, and missions for Multiplayer and Special Ops. Use XP tokens and events to maximize your progression on the path to tackling all the new challenges of Season Two.

Sony Exclusive* Modern Warfare Season Two Content

Outlast waves of enemies on a new Special Ops Survival map and master challenges to earn an exclusive* Weapon Blueprint.

    Azhir Cave (Survival)

Enter the desert wasteland of Azhir Cave to battle waves of opponents. The layout of Azhir Cave gives players different ways to experience the match and fight for Survival. Take to the cave to smoke out enemies, set traps, and block and control entry points. Or, players can find the high ground on the southwest of the map near the Coalition spawn in Multiplayer and try and funnel enemies to the valley below for easier eliminations. Discover the new ways to experience Azhir Cave while battling in Survival.

    Weapon Blueprint: Lucky Strike

A Legendary LMG Blueprint can be earned through an exclusive mission. Similar to Season One’s Jack Frosty Blueprint, navigate to the Missions tab in Barracks and activate the Lucky Strike mission. Complete each step of a multi-step challenges to earn XP along the way to adding the Lucky Strike to your arsenal.

There you have it! We hope you enjoy Season Two. Stay frosty. Season Two of Modern Warfare launches on February 11.

*Timed Exclusive content until Oct.1, 2020

Bloodroots is an Ultraviolent Ballet of Destruction, Out February 28 on PS4

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hey everyone, it’s Raph, your dedicated mullet-wearing developer. I come with great news! After three years of development, we can finally announce that Bloodroots will be releasing on… DRUMROLL… February 28!

One thing we haven’t talked much about is the game’s story. The plot is inspired by a classic western trope: the lonely hero fighting his way back for revenge. Think Kill Bill meets The Revenant, and spice it up with a lot of Jackie Chan.

We’ve had the great honor to work with Nick Suttner [Editor’s note: Hi Nick!] who helped write the wonderful Guacamelee 2 and the excellent Celeste. Through his dialogue, Nick gave life to our Weird West revenge tale and all its crazy characters.

Without further ado, let me take you through the game’s set up. The story begins with Mr. Wolf discovering Tarrytown completely engulfed in flames from a recent raid. In the village cemetery, the outlaws of the Blood Beasts gang ambush him. After a brief encounter, the leader of the gang, Mr. Black Wolf, takes down Mr. Wolf. Left for dead, Mr. Wolf mysteriously survives the attack and is consumed by rage which leads him to seek out revenge. He hunts down each member of the gang one by one. Bloodroots’ mysterious story then begins to unfold, one encounter at a time.

The Blood Beasts gang is at the center of the story. The pack is led by Mr. Black Wolf. Along his ranks there is Mr. Boar, a foul-mouthed dandy that will go to great lengths to protect his land and riches, even if it means sacrificing his own soldiers to do so. The youngest recruit is Ms. Bison. Fueled by her hyperactive nature, she is always thirsty for some bloody action. Finally Mrs. Crow is the one who has seen it all. Her wisdom and crafty nature makes her an indispensable ally to the Beasts. She is the most cunning of all the members which probably makes her the most dangerous of the gang.

When you eventually take down your enemies, their ghosts appear by your campfire and retell stories of the past, offering glimpses of their backstory. This is a feature meant for story-driven players. A lot of details for the story are there for you to experience if you want to delve into it. For the more hasty out there, you could also ignore it and go on with your killing spree.

All in all, we are really excited to get the game in your hands later this month!

  • Out Today: Firewall Zero Hour’s New Season – Operation: Black Dawn

Out Today: Firewall Zero Hour’s New Season – Operation: Black Dawn

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hey guys! Damoun Shabestari (aka Shabs) here, Game Director on Firewall Zero Hour*, the team-based multiplayer shooter exclusive to PS VR. We hope you’re all having a great start to the year!

Here at First Contact Entertainment, we’ve been excited to welcome so many new players to the game over the holidays. We’re continuing that momentum by kicking off the year in a big way–with Firewall Zero Hour included as a February PS Plus free game, and today’s launch of Firewall Zero Hour’s fourth season, Operation: Black Dawn!

We’re absolutely psyched to be bringing the game to a wider audience — and with a fresh content drop to boot. Here’s a full rundown on everything you’ll be seeing in Firewall Zero Hour’s Operation: Black Dawn, beginning today:

    New Map

Operation: Black Dawn launches with a brand new map, Oil Rig, available for free for all players. Set at nighttime, on an oil rig in the Caspian Sea, you’ll want to keep an eye out for enemies in the close quarter sections of this rig. Lots of unique cover points to take advantage of, as well as dangerous engagement zones. Players will also find themselves immediately in this scene when loading up the game, as the Oil Rig is the new Lobby environment during Operation: Black Dawn.

    New Contractor

This season brings a brand new Contractor to the roster: Saul. Saul and his Skill are available to Operation: Black Dawn Op Pass holders.** Saul hails from Spain, having grown up in the coastal city of Huelva. An expert on the open water, he enlisted in a Spanish military academy and was later handpicked to join the special forces. His Skill of “Tactician” allows players the ability to pick up planted equipment. Players who enjoy playing tactically are sure to be big fans of this Skill!

    New Cosmetic Rewards

There are 25 new cosmetic Rewards available this season. Upon completion of Missions, a variety of different trinkets, face paints, and camo skins can be equipped by players. In addition to Free Mission Rewards, Operation: Black Dawn Op Pass** holders have access to Premium and Bonus Mission Rewards. This season also marks the first time that graphic reticles for weapons will be available as Rewards for players in Free, Premium, and Bonus missions!

    New Weapon

Arriving in Operation: Black Dawn is a brand new weapon, the Custom X-MR, available to all players upon completion of the Free Mission starting February 4. The Custom X-MR is a fully-automatic SMG that packs a punch — perfect for the short-range engagements that you’ll come across on the Oil Rig!

    New Legendary Weapon Skin

The Legendary Weapon Skin of Operation: Black Dawn is Saul’s CQB — available to Operation: Black Dawn Op Pass holders** who complete all Free, Premium and Bonus Missions in Operation: Black Dawn (a total of 24 Missions) and redeemed for 250,000 Crypto.

New Operation: Black Dawn Op Pass and Hack Key Bundles

The Operation: Black Dawn Op Pass** allows players access to 16 additional Mission cosmetic Rewards, plus access to the new Contractor Saul, and the ability to unlock the Legendary Weapon Skin after completion of all 24 Missions this season. Hack Keys can be used to instantly complete any Operational Mission and receive its cosmetic Reward — a great option for players who don’t have as much time to play as they would like. If you have any Hack Keys left over from last season (Operation: Heartland), you can use them on Missions this season (Operation: Black Dawn).

Thanks to community feedback, we’re excited to offer new tiers of Operation: Black Dawn Op Pass** and Hack Key bundles in the PlayStation store this season:

    • Firewall Zero Hour – Operation: Black Dawn Op Pass + 25 Hack Keys ($24.99)
    • Firewall Zero Hour – Operation: Black Dawn Op Pass + 5 Hack Keys ($9.99)
    • Firewall Zero Hour – Operation: Black Dawn Op Pass + 1 Hack Key ($5.99)
    • Firewall Zero Hour – 5 Hack Keys Pack ($4.99)

Firewall Zero Hour Digital Deluxe Edition and Deluxe Pack

As a reminder, Firewall Zero Hour’s Deluxe Pack recently became available on PlayStation Store, released in conjunction with the Digital Deluxe Edition. Great as an add-on for those newer to the game, the Deluxe Pack features some of the most popular Contractors, skins, and face paints released for Firewall Zero Hour since launch.

The Deluxe Pack ($19.99) includes the following:

    • Contractors: Jag, Nash, Node, Ruby, Lynx, Kane, Proxy
    • Camo Skins: Banana, Bella, Dark Carbon, Fractal, Graffik, Lava, Snakeskin, Sunset
    • Face Paints: Aztec, Clownface, Eagle, Fierce, Janus, Kiwi, Rotten
    • Weapon Skins: Banana, Bella, Dark Carbon, Fractal, Graffik, Lava, Snakeskin, Sunset

Whew! Contractors, you’ve got your work cut out for you.

We’re amped to be welcoming even more of the PlayStation community to the game this year. We can’t wait to hear your feedback on Operation: Black Dawn, and watch all the hilarious and unpredictable streams with so many new players joining the fray. Our community has been amazing since Firewall Zero Hour’s launch in 2018. Thanks for your continued support and great feedback!

    We’ll see you online, Contractors!

    – Shabs

  • Zombie Army 4 Rises Today on PS4

Zombie Army 4 Rises Today on PS4

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hi everyone — my name’s Jason Kingsley and I’m the Creative Director and Co-founder of Rebellion. I’m delighted to be back at PlayStation.Blog the day Zombie Army 4: Dead War launches on PS4!

It’s almost five years ago to the day my first PS Blog post got published, and oddly enough that was all about Zombie Army Trilogy. It was so exciting to see PlayStation players fall in love with our crazy 1-4 player Sniper Elite spinoff. Loads of you teamed up to gun down Hitler’s hordes of the damned. Were you one of those who sent the demon Fuhrer to the pits of hell?

Zombie Army 4 Rises Today on PS4

    The Dead War Rages On

Zombie Army 4 is bigger, deadlier and dare I say even crazier than what came before. The Dead War continues in a diabolical story campaign, again for 1-4 players. Not only do the damned still roam the Earth, but they’ve developed strange new powers. You’ll face all manner of monstrosity, from fast-paced crawlers to zombie snipers, flamethrower-wielding elites to undead-summoning generals, and even zombie tanks. Oh, and zombie sharks for that matter!

A greater threat demands stronger resistance. In Zombie Army 4 we’ve introduced a range of special supercharged abilities. Deploy a long-range overkill to take out multiple zombies with just one bullet, go into slow-mo to tear through undead, or line up a rapid-fire chain of pistol headshots! Maybe you prefer things up close and personal — take out zombies with brutal executions and use special melee attacks to control the crowd. That’s on top of the lethal array of environmental traps and deployable items to hand, elemental attachments for your weapons and tons of other additions.

Progress through the massive levels of our challenging story campaign and you’ll rank up, unlocking even more new goodies to play around with. You can build the slayer you want with our brand new perks system, upgrade your arsenal into death-dealing super-weapons, and apply modifiers to items like grenades and trip mines.

Despite all these additions, we’ve held onto the 80s horror movie aesthetic, shambling but deadly zombies, and grindhouse arcade third-person shooting that you all fell in love with in Zombie Army Trilogy. Zombie Army 4, just like Zombie Army Trilogy, is an absolute romp of a video game!

    Beware the Hell Cult

I do have one juicy titbit to offer before I go, though. We’ve already announced some of our post-launch plans for Season 1 of Zombie Army 4 — check out trailer teasing the season’s three-part story campaign, “Hell Cult,” and the bucket-load of brand new content also coming in the first season.

I’m really excited about Hell Cult, though. The story offers a fascinating new turn for the Zombie Army series, and it takes you and your fellow dead-hunters to extraordinary new realms of chaos. I can’t say too much without spoiling things, but I think you’re all going to really enjoy it. I’ve probably said too much so I’ll stop there!

Until then, I hope you have an amazing time with Zombie Army 4. Our whole studio has put our souls (of the damned!) into the game. Now the Dead War is finally upon us — see you on the battlefield!

  • Dreams Coming to Early Access Players Ahead of Launch

Dreams Coming to Early Access Players Ahead of Launch

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

We’re excited to confirm that Early Access Dreamers will upgrade to the launch version of Dreams ahead of the February 14 launch date.

We’ll be releasing a Creator Patch update on February 11 that gives those players access to all the new content in Dreams from 12pm GMT (4am Pacific time). Following this Creator Patch, players will be able to play and enjoy all the new features coming with the official launch of Dreams!

The team here have been busy bees since Early Access launched and we’re excited to be able to confirm the major changes from February 11:

    Content

    We’re releasing Art’s Dream!

This feature film length adventure follows former jazz musician Art as he dreams about his life, past and present, and realizes he needs to make amends with his fellow bandmates.

The journey takes him through a series of dream-like situations involving him and a whole cast of wonderful fantasy characters, such as D-Bug, a helpful little robot with an electric personality and Frances, a hammer wielding teddy bear. Will he get his shot at redemption, or will his dreams become nightmares?

    New Creator Kits

You’ll also get access to the Art’s Dream creation kits, allowing you to make your own dreams with our noir, sci-fi, and fantasy creations. There are also two new kits to use in DreamShaping and your Homespaces:

    • Welcome Home
    • Ancient Temple

    New Homespace Introduction

You’ll also find a new intro to the homespace area and quite a few new tutorials and how-to videos in the Workshop!

    Updated UI

The UI we implemented for DreamSurfing is also a significant update coming to DreamShaping which should make it easier to find content and collections to create with.

    Creation

Now, we know our voracious creators in Early Access are dying to know what’s changed in the tools.

    • We’ve added better thermometer tools (level analysis and heatmaps), camera bookmarks and a whole new control scheme that uses left and right sticks, not the motion sensor function, for players who prefer that option.
    • We’ve also done a lot under the hood – our best guess for how many changes have been made between the start of Early Access and now is… well… 18,000?!
    • We’ve deployed bug fixes (much of it based on your feedback, thank you!) and added polish across the game as well as a host of smaller changes.

Thank you for supporting us in Early Access — we can’t wait to welcome you to the new improved Dreamiverse, ahead of schedule, on February 11!

Moving Out Moves to PS4 on April 28

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hey Movers! SMG Art Team here — with Moving Out launching April 28, we thought we’d share the story behind the creation of some of the characters you’ll get to play in this couch co-op, moving game full of comedy, color, and chaos. We’ll break down the process so you can get a first-hand look at the design work we do, and how we take our wacky ideas and turn them into something you can actually move. Characters are how you experience the world of Moving Out, so sit tight as we jump right into the character design process!

In the beginning, we get to be super creative — any and all ideas are welcome, and it’s not limited to the art team. At SMG, we think everyone has great ideas, so we sit down together and brainstorm. The best part of this process is how we can really bounce off each other. Fish bowls turn into actual fish for heads. What eats fish? Birds. Eagles are birds, and chickens — what’s with the funny way that chicken’s heads don’t move when their bodies do? Hmm… chickens lay eggs.

    OH! Dragons!!! DRAGON EGGS!

Eggs… all this talk of eggs, now I’m hungry. Oooo oooooh!! SANDWICH HEADS!

This stream of consciousness and collaborative thinking really helps to define our scope. Practically, we took notes. We did have some considerations which helped us reduce the list later on — we wanted to have characters that had the potential for expressive elements, things like tails or particle effects. We also wanted to make sure we had a good cross-section of different character types.

With a short-list in hand, we drew up the ideas so we could get a rough visual of what each character could look like. We knew early on that we’d need the character’s hands to be clearly visible; it’s a big game play consideration, and it really shaped how we approached the character’s body design, so we locked that down pretty early. Character heads, on the other hand were still up for debate! So once the 2D drawings were circulated, in true democratic fashion, we held an internal vote.

After the vote, the 2D drawings were fleshed out with some more detailed 2D paintings. And voila! Character concepts for the team to build in 3D and iterate on!

Once we jump into 3D space, we start with a rough model. Here we get to play with the shapes and forms and can test for the first time if an idea will truly work. To know for sure, we drop the model into the game engine to test it in situ. With a clear idea about what’s working and what’s not, we iterate and refine the model.

To get a better idea of this, we can use Cam as a case study. After the first block in, we changed the orientation of the eyes, added patterns to their ridge and played around with different tongue lengths and positions. We also played with various colors because we had character customization in mind.

Now, after locking down a character design, we get to rig it up so any unique elements can come to life. Most of the faces used blend shapes or had a rig for the jaw. Sometimes a character called for both, and physics elements featured heavily too. It took some wrangling to make each character as you see it, but it’s the custom nature of each character that really makes them stand out!

Another really important element is the way the characters’ bodies move. So much of it is physics driven, but we also animated the rigs for cycles like running and slapping, with animations to support all of our wheelchair and non-wheelchair customizations. We tried out different idle animations too, and like everything, we iterated and culled as we developed more of the game.

Something the whole team was passionate about was representation for the human characters. It was really important to us that players could create characters they could self-identify with, so we were excited to include a wide range of customization options.

The non-human characters also had customizable options, such plant options for Herbie, and different breaded options for Rye-Yu. Waffles, anyone? Brainstorming for these variants was lots of fun too.

On top of the character variants, we also crafted a bunch of hats to work across all the characters — this required a custom bone system — but we wanted everyone to have the chance to participate in the overall character silliness.

The characters were all lots of fun to make and it was really satisfying to go through the whole creation process. There’s nothing quite like creating something out of nothing, and we’re all super proud of the variation and the scope of the characters we’ve brought to life.

We hope you have as much fun playing your characters as we had in making them!

    SMG Art Team, moving out!

EPISODE #3 – “Raising Atreus for Battle”

    • While we worked hard on developing his positioning, traversal, and progression, it was Atreus’ core combat system that became, perhaps, an even greater challenge. The design, tech, and animations of Atreus’ combat were meticulously planned for almost every imaginable gameplay situation, including how he interacted with Kratos in battle. In this episode of Worlds Collide, we bring together our Senior Staff Technical Combat Designer and Senior Animator to discuss how Atreus’ combat went from feeling mediocre to feeling empowering and eventful. • The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics Launches Tomorrow

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics Launches Tomorrow

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics arrives tomorrow, and as you might have already guessed, that means you’re going to come face turn-based strategy battles with some of the most vile villains in all of fantasy: the Skeksis.

If you’re not familiar with the series or the original movie, the Skeksis are the bad guys in Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal — twisted, almost maniacal creatures who rule the world of Thra with an iron fist. But, because they are slowly dying out, they know their reign is coming to an end, and they are determined to stay in power… even if that means performing horrific experiments on their loyal Gelfling subjects!

Once the truth comes out, the Gelfling clans find themselves mounting a resistance to their erstwhile Skeksis masters — which means that when you come up against them in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, you’re going to need to know what to expect!

    The Chamberlain

While the Chamberlain can deliver some pretty serious blows in combat, the real danger he poses is that he can use “Please, Please” (his signature catch phrase) to Confuse some of your best heroes. And worse, he can use “Skeksis, Friend…” to convert Confused heroes to his side! Your best ally could suddenly become your worst enemy — so don’t count on any one hero to get you through a fight with the Chamberlain on the battlefield!

    The Hunter

One of the most fearsome Skeksis around, the Hunter is fast and deadly. His “Leap Away” ability allows him to get out of reach… which he follows up with “Deadly Plunge,” leaping back to anywhere on the map and Stunning everybody in the nearby area. Between that combo and his “Cleave” ability, your best bet is to spread out to minimize damage… and even then, you might just have to sacrifice one of your heroes as a distraction.

    The General

As his name suggests, the General is a master of strategy and tactics, meaning that he can use his “Command!” ability to let his allies take their turns immediately, or his “Intimidate” ability to reduce his opponents’ Attack and Defense, as well as Silence them (preventing them from using their own abilities). The General also hits harder than nearly any other Skeksis, so make sure you have a healer on hand!

    The Scientist

Arguably the weakest of the Skeksis, the Scientist relies on his devices and alchemical concoctions — like “Explosive Cask” and “Salt the Earth” –to deal damage at long range or to Poison tiles, forcing heroes to choose between taking damage every turn, or going the long way around to reach their targets. Be sure you have someone on your team who can remove Negative Status Effects!

That’s obviously not all of the Skeksis you’ll face, but those are the ones whose capabilities will be most evident to you right from the start. Sooner or later, though, you’ll have to battle the Emperor himself… and you’ll be in for the toughest fight yet!

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics will be available at PlayStation Store starting tomorrow.

  • Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack Comes to PS4 April 23

Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack Comes to PS4 April 23

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

It gives me so much joy to announce that our Azure Striker Gunvolt series is making its long-awaited debut on PS4 this April!

After the release of Azure Striker Gunvolt in 2014 and Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 in 2016, I had always hoped that one day we would be able to bring the series over to the PlayStation. This way, all of the people who love the kind of 2D side-scrolling action games we’ve been making for over 20 years can finally experience a series that is bursting at the seams with everything we love in a video game.

While it’s true that the Gunvolt series features the 2D action gameplay that has become synonymous with Inti Creates over the years, it’s all of the other features that weave it all together that make the Gunvolt games our pride and joy.

Anime-style Characters and World Created in High-Quality Pixel Art

It’s not a part of the game I work on personally, so I don’t have to hold back when I say that I believe we have some of the best pixel artists in the entire industry working on our titles. The detailed characters, jaw-dropping backgrounds, and fluid animations that my comrades make never cease to blow my mind. Combined with series character artist Yoshiktaka Hatakeyama’s masterfully crafted character art, key art, and more, it’s no small wonder that Gunvolt and the gang became the faces of our company.

OK, I’ll stop gushing about our artists now 🙂

Classic-Style Action Game Elements Woven Into a Deep Storyline

I feel like this was especially true back in the day and even when the Gunvolt games originally released, but 2D action games weren’t necessarily known for having very deep storylines. That was something we wanted to change with the Gunvolt series, and with a motley cast that includes more than 30 developed, fully-voiced characters spread over the two games, the stage was set for Gunvolt’s sci-fi narrative to unfold. There are lots of character interactions in the game, and I’m not just talking about the dialogue that happens between stages or during encounters with boss characters. A lot of dialogue happens live during stage playthroughs (called Story Mode+), which gives the characters a lot more time to interact with each other and share details about who they are that you would otherwise never have a chance to learn.

Songs Performed By the Games’ Heroines Ramp up the Action

The heroines of the game have a special ability known as “The Muse,” and the power of song is an integral part of their characters. When players reach a certain score, referred to in-game as “Kudos” points, the heroines Lumen and Lola will appear and the soundtrack turns into an electric, vocal-filled J-pop performance for as long as the player can maintain the necessary Kudos. With over 20 vocal tracks in total, including a new one made exclusively for the PlayStation release of the Striker Pack, I challenge you to do your best so you can hear these wonderful ladies sing their hearts out!

Gameplay That’s Welcoming for New Players and Veterans

We want everyone to be able to enjoy the story of the Gunvolt games, so we put systems in place that allow players of all skill levels to customize their experience to increase the challenge or give Gunvolt and Copen an extra edge against those particularly tough bosses.

With the other improvements we put in place like overhauling the graphics and UI, increasing the frame rate to 60fps from its original 30fps and more, the PlayStation version is the ultimate way to experience the original Azure Striker Gunvolt games, and I hope you all have an absolute blast with them on April 23!

Hit the polls below to help decide January’s best new game, and make a case for your vote in the comments. We’ll keep the polls open through Sunday night, then reveal the winners next week.

How does it work? At the end of every month, PlayStation.Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. Soon thereafter, we’ll close the polls, tally your votes, and announce the winner at PlayStation.Blog. PlayStation Store will also showcase some top Players’ Choice winners throughout the year.

What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? In keeping with our long tradition in the Game of the Year Awards, remastered or re-released games won’t qualify. Ambitious, larger-scale rebuilds and remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will.

How are nominees decided? The PlayStation.Blog and PlayStation Store editorial teams will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll. Write-in votes will be accepted.

  • Apex Legends Season 4 Starts Tuesday: New Character, Weapon, More Detailed

Apex Legends Season 4 Starts Tuesday: New Character, Weapon, More Detailed

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Death is coming in Apex Legends Season 4 — Assimilation. Face your fears or become them with Revenant, light up the Arena with a fresh Battle Pass, strike fear into your enemies with a new sniper, explore an updated map, and more.

Become a Walking Nightmare with Revenant

Revenant used to be human. He was the greatest hitman the Mercenary Syndicate ever had. He used to look in the mirror and see his human face looking back. But time changes everything, and when his programming finally failed, he saw what he had become at the hands of the Mercenary Syndicate and Hammond Robotics: a walking nightmare of steel and vestigial flesh. His masters resurrected him as a simulacrum, snatching him from death’s embrace again and again and programming him to forget. Centuries later, all he wants is revenge. Of course, he doesn’t mind eviscerating a few of the Legends along the way. He used to need a reason to kill… but he’s not that man anymore.

    PlayStation’s Most-Wanted Games of Early 2020

    Reading Time: 6 minutes

The new decade kicks off with a trove of high-profile releases. Tracking all the gaming goodness releasing in early 2020 can be overwhelming, but we’ve got your back. The first part of the year has you covered whether you’re into surviving zombie outbreaks, fighting Hell through Heaven and Earth, or fending off vicious Infected. Below are the big games to watch for releasing through April 2020.

    February 14

The minds behind Little Big Planet and Tearaway expand the creative possibilities for PS4 users. Media Molecule’s new release lets players craft games and experiences big and small, of any genre. Want to create an FPS starring a peanut-blasting elephant, or an RPG from the perspective of a sentient vacuum? Dreams lets you make it happen. If playing is more your thing, Dream Surfing lets you cruise through thousands of unique user-created experiences.

    Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection
    February 25

Visit a time long after the events of the Mega Man and Mega Man X series, where the storied Zero battles evil robots (his true vocation). Capcom’s handheld side-scrolling series makes its way to PS4 for the first time ever, bundling six intense games into one package. Mega Man Zero 1 – 4 let players simultaneously wield both Zero’s deadly Z-sabre and a long-range buster for the first time in the series. The result is cathartic and empowering. ZX and ZX Advent reward players who defeat bosses with new attacks that enhance their mobility and allow access to new locations. This collection is a must for anyone who loves jumpin’, shootin’, and lootin’ boss weapons.

Team Ninja’s prequel invites players to test their samurai skills in an era of warfare and evil spirits. Nioh 2 expands combat options with the Yokai Shift ability, letting players embody a club-wielding brute, nimble dagger user, and more. These potent abilities are counter-balanced by tough enemies that will test players’ skills and discipline. One such enemy is the fearsome Mezuki – a large, horse-headed beats brandishing a serrated weapon with brutal efficiency. The feeling of satisfying, hard-won victories is just around the corner.

    MLB The Show 20
    PlayStation’s Most-Wanted Games of Early 2020

San Diego Studio returns to the mound this year for its latest in baseball goodness. MLB The Show 20 packs gameplay improvements, the thrilling Road To The Show mode, March To October 2.0, and an all new Showdown game mode. While we don’t have many specific details about the new mode or gameplay updates, San Diego Studio’s continued dedication to the diamond should be enough to keep it on fans’ radars.

    Doom Eternal

Rip, tear, and burn. The Doom Slayer returns in id Software’s high-impact sequel brandishing new weapons and abilities. Take the fearsome Flame Belch, for instance. The new shoulder-mounted flamethrower lets players immolate enemies and reap the armor shards that drop in the process. These new tricks will come in handy when battling new demons like the aerial Gargoyle and support-class Carcass. The frenzied fight extends beyond the red terrain of Doom (2016)’s Mars to a Hell-ravaged Earth filled with shattered skyscrapers and decimated shopping malls. The action extends beyond Earth to the solar system and even the heavens above. Suit up, reload — it’s gonna be Hell.

    Persona 5 Royal

The Phantom Thieves strike again in this expanded version of their unforgettable adventure. Joker packs a new grappling hook he can use to explore specific areas, new content has been added to palaces, and the gang can hang out the bustling Kichijoji, filled with shops and restaurants. New transfer student, Kasumi, is the star of the expanded story. The talented ballerina and gymnast lights up the dance floor and battles in the Metaverse. You can get to know Kasumi and the rest of the big additions coming with Persona 5 Royal soon. Better get some rest first!

    Resident Evil 3

Pack your bags — not to visit Raccoon City, but to escape it. Just a year after Capcom’s stellar Resident Evil 2 remake, the devs are giving a similar treatment to 1999’s Resident Evil 3. The terrifying bio-weapon, Nemesis, stalks Spencer Mansion survivor Jill Valentine across the chaotic city. He’s intelligent, determined, and packs brutal weapons like a rocket launcher and massive flamethrower. Early looks at the game showcase Capcom’s photorealistic character models, which bring new life to Jill and the Umbrella soldiers she tenuously allies with to scrape by. The game also comes with the online, asymmetrical action of Resident Evil Resistance (formerly known as Project Resistance). One player is the Mastermind, unleashing Lickers, Hunters, zombies, and other monsters against a team of four survivor players. This double dose of RE is just around the corner…

    Final Fantasy VII Remake

Step into the boots of Cloud Strife, a former soldier of the evil Shinra Company. Once part of the organization sapping the planet’s Mako life force for profit, Cloud now partners with scrappy resistance fighters to take the company down. His partners in crime include the hard-hitting Tifa, hot-headed Barret, and a mysterious flower girl named Aerith. Though Cloud’s motives are his own, he still fights with everything he’s got. Final Fantasy VII Remake’s battle system combines thoughtful RPG combat with intense, eye-popping action. Battles shift to slow motion as players plan their next move, causing sparks and bullets to move dramatically across the screen. Like a ticking bomb attached to Midgar’s Mako Reactor — Final Fantasy VII Remake is primed to blow RPG fans away.

    Predator: Hunting Grounds

Prepare to enter the jungle for a battle between the iconic Predator and an expertly trained Fireteam. Illfonic’s asymmetrical online multiplayer game lets players choose their preferred Predator class and stalk the competition with ruthless efficiency. The versatile Hunter brings a balanced ability set to battle. The intimidating Berserker devastates enemies with boosted power and health. The swift Scout benefits from increased speed and stamina. The Fireteam also has an arsenal of weapons to combat their extraterrestrial foe, including assault rifles, shotguns, and more. It’s nearly time to collect your battle trophies.

The Last of Us Part II

Ellie’s story continues in an unforgiving, post-pandemic world. She’s scraped together a life alongside the community of Jackson County, Wyoming. Naughty Dog has revealed some captivating story details, including Ellie’s fledgling romance with the endearing Dina, and the fact that her journey leads towards the overgrown remains of Seattle. The Last of Us Part II’s gameplay also evolves what it means to survive amidst violent survivors and menacing Infected. Ellie’s new skills and abilities let her perform a dodge, stealth through more areas, craft improvised pistol silencers, and much more. Words can’t effectively convey how excited we are to play the sequel to PlayStation fans’ Game of the Decade.
