Hello everyone! The holidays are almost here, and I’m so excited to be back at PlayStation.Blog to reveal a very special surprise: Christmas is coming to No Straight Roads!

That’s right, to spread some Xmas cheer, later this week we will be releasing a brand new Christmas Edition title update for No Straight Roads that brings Christmas to the game. And best of all, it will be available totally free to everybody who owns No Straight Roads on PlayStation 4! Here’s a look at our new trailer to show you the festivities we have in store.

No Straight Roads gets festive with free Christmas Edition update

We’ve been working hard to bring Christmas to the world of No Straight Roads, remixing the game with awesome new Christmas music, decor, outfits, album art and visual effects to celebrate the holiday season. We’ve given a Christmas makeover to almost every NSR boss and their stages, and we hope you’ll love revisiting the game with this new Christmas themed content.

And because we can’t wait for you to hear the boss’s new Christmas themes, here’s 1010’s new Christmas remix that you’ll be able to hear while fighting them in-game.

No Straight Roads gets festive with free Christmas Edition update

Once the title update becomes available later this week, No Straight Roads players will be able to access the new Christmas Edition content by heading to the boss fight menu in Vinyl City and pressing Triangle to change the genre to ‘Xmas Remix’. You’ll then be transported into the Christmas version of that boss fight.

If you haven’t jumped into the world of No Straight Roads yet, the Christmas Edition title update will also be available to you for free whenever you do. Since launching on PlayStation 4 back in August, we’ve been blown away by the incredible fan art, original characters and comments from the community, and this is our way of saying an extra special thank you.

From all of us at Metronomik and our publisher Sold Out, we wish you a very happy holiday and a rockin’ 2021!

  • Lead the music revolution in No Straight Roads, out tomorrow

Lead the music revolution in No Straight Roads, out tomorrow

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hi everyone! Wan Hazmer here from Metronomik, and wow, what a day! I’m so excited that I’m finally able to say this — our musical action-adventure No Straight Roads launches on PS4 tomorrow! Here’s our rockin’ new launch trailer!

Lead the music revolution in No Straight Roads, out tomorrow

Myself and my cousin Daim Dziauddin (who is also Creative Director on the game) have been dreaming of making No Straight Roads for such a long time that it is truly humbling to know that you will all get to experience it tomorrow. We are so excited for you to lead the rock rebellion and start your adventure in Vinyl City. We hope you enjoy it!

But some of you may still be wondering, what is No Straight Roads? Well to set the record straight (literally!), it’s not a racing game! 😂 It’s a third-person character action-adventure game based around music, where you control an indie rock duo on an adventure to defeat a corrupt EDM empire. Here’s a quick video explaining what the game is all about!

Lead the music revolution in No Straight Roads, out tomorrow

At the beginning of the game, our two rock heroes Mayday & Zuke are unfairly rejected from an audition with the empire and witness their corruption shortly afterwards, leading them on a musical revolution to take back Vinyl City.

Music is at the heart of No Straight Roads, and while you can play the game like a traditional action game if you want to, listening to the beat and learning the music will give you the advantage in combat. Enemies attack to the beat, so recognising audio cues, listening to the music and learning when they are about to attack is key to performing well and earning higher ranks.

Throughout the game you’ll have to defeat NSR’s artists, hijacking their concerts with rock! Each artist specialises in their own genre of music, from a pop-tastic robot boy band and piano playing child prodigy to a virtual vocaloid mermaid and globe-spinning DJ. We even have a rap battle! Once they’ve been defeated you’ll rule their district and unlock new areas of Vinyl City, which you can explore, speak to new NPCs, find new power cells and gradually restore power to the city. Oh, and you can do this all in 2-player local co-op, too. We’ve loved rocking through the story with friends and family members and hope you do too!

No Straight Roads is all about music, then, but it definitely isn’t your typical rhythm game. In fact, we don’t usually like calling it a rhythm game at all. But we know there are hardcore rhythm players excited for the game, too, so we have included a special Parry Mode that unlocks after completing the story and allows you to go back and fight all the bosses again, but this time, you can only damage them by parrying their attacks to the beat! Here, learning enemy attack patterns and paying close attention to the music is absolutely critical, and we hope Parry Mode offers a different action-packed experience for hardcore players to traditional rhythm games.

We’re so proud of our soundtrack and thankful to the talented artists who have created music for the game. We have a short mini-OST available online for you to download and stream, and if you like that, there’s plenty more just like it in the full game!

From all of us at Metronomik, we hope you enjoy No Straight Roads and can’t wait for you to rock out with Mayday & Zuke tomorrow!

  • Führt die Musikrevolution in No Straight Roads an – ab morgen erhältlich

Führt die Musikrevolution in No Straight Roads an – ab morgen erhältlich

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hallo zusammen!

Führt die Musikrevolution in No Straight Roads an – ab morgen erhältlich

Führt die Musikrevolution in No Straight Roads an – ab morgen erhältlich

  • No Straight Roads Rocks to PS4 June 30, Collector’s Edition Revealed

No Straight Roads Rocks to PS4 June 30, Collector’s Edition Revealed

    Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hey PlayStation fans! We are thrilled to be back at PS Blog with some awesome news: No Straight Roads is rocking onto PS4 on June 30!

Yessss! A release date! We really can’t wait for you to experience the world of Vinyl City and lead the musical revolution against EDM empire NSR this summer.

But that isn’t the only bit of news we have to share with you today… We’re thrilled to announce the No Straight Roads Collector’s Edition, an extra special physical edition coming to PS4 that packs in a range of exclusive collectible items, including a 10-track vinyl record featuring an awesome selection of tracks from the game’s OST, a 64-page The Art of NSR artbook featuring never-before-seen artwork, and a set of collectible No Straight Roads drumsticks, so you can jam out to NSR’s music at home.

The NSR Collector’s Edition is available to pre-order now, so be sure to check in with your favourite retailer for availability.

Since leaving Square Enix in 2017 (editor’s note: Wan Hazmer was lead game designer on Final Fantasy XV), I have learned so much about what it takes to launch a game as a new indie studio. As it is for any indie team, it’s been a journey full of challenges and success stories, and I’m so thankful to our partners at Sold Out for their support and making our dreams of launching a collector’s edition a reality. I am incredibly excited for everyone to get their hands on the game soon.

Of course, being indie means this may be the first time you’ve been introduced to No Straight Roads, so if you’re wondering what it’s all about, let me explain…!

No Straight Roads is an action-adventure game that mashes together rhythm-infused combat with a vibrant offbeat world and a killer soundtrack. In fact, music plays a central role in the game, and while No Straight Roads isn’t a rhythm-action game, listening to the music can be critical to mastering the combat. This means that while enemies attack to the beat, players can attack, parry, jump and move freely in action-packed third-person combat, while listening out for cues to dodge enemy attacks.

The game pits two passionate indie rock band members, Mayday and Zuke, against EDM empire NSR, whose tight grip on Vinyl City is smothering the expression of other music genres. Playing as Mayday and Zuke, it’s up to you to lead the musical revolution in Vinyl City and take the fight back against NSR’s musical megastars.

Because music is so important to No Straight Roads, we’ve been working with amazingly talented artists like James Landino, Andy Tunstall, Funk Fiction, Masahiro “Godspeed” Aoki, Az Samad and Clyde, along with our music director Falk Au Yeong, to deliver an incredible soundtrack that shifts between EDM and rock as you progress throughout each stage. We’re so excited by the soundtrack that we really wanted to share one track with you today, and give you a taste of what’s to come in the full game.

We’re also excited to bring you a new look at 1010, NSR’s superstar boy band and the coolest group in Vinyl City. Get ready for a high-speed skirmish against these stylish stars in a pop music encounter unlike anything you’ve seen before!

Thank you again for joining us on our journey. We can’t wait to share the world of No Straight Roads with you this summer.

  • Japanese Voice Acting Cast Revealed for No Straight Roads

Japanese Voice Acting Cast Revealed for No Straight Roads

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hi everyone! My name is Idir and I’m Associate Producer on No Straight Roads. We have some exciting news today revealing the amazing voice cast that will be appearing in the Japanese version of the game, as well as the composer.

If you haven’t heard of No Straight Roads before, it’s a music-based action-adventure set in the world of Vinyl City, where our two heroes Mayday & Zuke must lead a musical revolution to take back the city from a corrupt EDM empire. The game plays like a traditional third-person action game but is inspired heavily by music. You can move and attack freely, and switch between Mayday & Zuke at any time, but keep an ear out for the music as enemies will always attack to the beat!

First up, we have Ayane Sakura who will be co-starring as Mayday, one of the game’s main playable characters and guitarist of indie rock band Bunk Bed Junction. Sakura-san has lent her voice to many games and TV shows previously, but you might recognize her from Psycho-Pass and My Hero Academia.

We’re also excited to confirm Jun Fukuyama (Joker in Persona 5) will be co-starring as Zuke, Bunk Bed Junction’s drummer and the game’s second playable character. As well as playing Joker in Persona 5, Fukuyama-san has featured in many other games and TV shows, including Code Geass and Dissidia: Final Fantasy.

Joey Bizinger, aka YouTube’s The Anime Man, will also be playing the role of the ‘Music Elitist’, a supporting character that players will encounter while exploring the world of Vinyl City.

For the music, we’re collaborating with Masahiro “Godspeed” Aoki. He’s known to have been the composer of Final Fantasy XV: Comrades and the Sengoku Basara series, and the last part of the new No Straight Roads trailer features one of his pieces for the game.

As a small team making our first game, we’re so grateful to have such incredible voice talent appearing in the game and are really excited to show you our new trailer giving you a first glimpse at their performances.

Thanks for checking out our trailer and we can’t wait to show you more ahead of the game’s release in early 2020.

  • No Straight Roads Pits Rock Against EDM Later This Year

No Straight Roads Pits Rock Against EDM Later This Year

    Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hello everyone! Let me say that it’s a huge delight to be able to say “Hi!” from PlayStation.Blog. I’m really happy to be able to directly talk to all you wonderful PlayStation gamers, being one myself!

I’m Wan Hazmer, former Lead Game Designer of Final Fantasy XV and together with my cousin Daim Dziauddin, former Concept Artist of Street Fighter V, we co-founded Metronomik, a Malaysian video game studio back in December 2017.

We’re happy to present to you our first PS4 music-based action-adventure game: No Straight Roads! Here, you fight a massive Electronic Dance Music empire as an indie rock band! Yup, you can already tell that we’re huge fans of music and epic battles!

    No Straight Roads

The game is set in Vinyl City, which mega corporation NSR (No Straight Roads) has taken control of all the city’s clubs. NSR, which doubles as an EDM label, will only allow their music to be performed. You play as Mayday and Zuke, two members of the indie rock band Bunk Bed Junction, who clash against NSR’s artists in giant boss fights to reclaim control of the city.

    No Straight RoadsNo Straight Roads

So maybe this is the first time you’re hearing about this project, but we presented the game at the Tokyo Game Show, Paris Games Week and recently at the Taipei Game Show — and we are extremely proud to mention that we won the prestigious ‘Best Audio’ Indie Award at Taipei Game Show!

No Straight Roads was created to reinforce the role of audio in a video game without turning it into a rhythm game, and to tell a story about different musical cultures through powerful visual elements.

    No Straight Roads

“So,” I hear you ask. “It’s a rhythm game?”

It’s actually an action game with a unique twist! It plays similarly to, say, Kingdom Hearts or Devil May Cry. While everything that happens on screen is deeply tied with the music, you can attack, jump and move freely; You are not required to follow the beat, but if you understand the relationship between the enemy attacks and the music, you will gain an advantage in combat!

    No Straight Roads

Because in No Straight Roads, music is power. The core experience that we want to nail is “your music can change the world.” So the power of music, you can transform certain objects into weapons. Your performance in the game will also bring about changes in the game’s music: a seamless and dynamic transition between rock and Electronic Dance Music.

What we’ve been able to accomplish is a result of the amazing music by Falk — who has worked on the music of previous Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games, James Landino of Sonic Mania fame, Funk Fiction and Andy Tunstall; and the fantastic sound design of Gwen, Sharon and Jeremy!

We also want to represent music in its entirety: its culture, its creativity and its many stories. It’s also about the clash of ideals and different mindsets of why people play music. We tell these stories in a way that can be only told in video games. Less reliance on cutscenes and more on visual storytelling.

We’ve been told during the game shows that our art is very unique. It’s all thanks to our amazing art team. Our concept artist is Ellie Yong, who had zero experience in game art before coming in our team, but brought an extensive experience creating sprawling wall murals and illustrations to our game. Our 3D team then aligns to her concept art (instead of the other way around), providing a unique, visually-striking art direction to our game. Jarold, who has worked as an art director for projects like Gears of War, is now tasked with bringing Ellie’s beautiful art into an immersive 3D world.

We recently released brand new key art, created by Ellie, that showcases one of the main protagonists, Mayday, as she looks towards the tower of No Straight Roads, the EDM empire in the game. Surely this art looks very familiar to all you RPG fans? That’s right, it’s a tribute to the 22nd anniversary of Final Fantasy VII, one of my favorite RPGs of all time!

This key art is my little way to say thank you. It was a great privilege to work alongside some of the original members who worked on this masterpiece back when I was in Square Enix. It is also a testament to our ambition to make No Straight Roads a truly memorable experience for gamers worldwide when it releases this spring on PS4.
